Interview of Damaris Bosch, Pembroke Falls Zumba Instructor

By Patrick Mason, a contributing magazine editor

Call the clubhouse for more information on the classes she offers at the Clubhouse. 954-430-8700 PM: DB:

How long have you been teaching Zumba classes at Pembroke Falls? I’ve been teaching Zumba in Pembroke Falls for 13 years.

PM: At what age did you get interested in dancing and what teachers or schools did study and learn from? DB: I was born and raised in Puerto Rico, which led me to have a passion for Caribbean dance. As a child I took jazz classes in a dance academy in my hometown. I was involved in my school’s dance team. In addition to this, I participated in my high school’s cheerleading squad. Dancing has played a huge role in my life culturally, physically, and emotionally.

PM: What do you enjoy most about the classes? DB: My favorite part about my class is seeing everyone leave with a smile on their face. One of the greatest aspects of Zumba dancing is that you don’t realize how much you are actually exercising. Zumba’s motto is actually “ditch the workout, join the party”. You are able to dance, enjoy the music, and watch your body change throughout the classes. My clients are able to lose weight, get toned, make new friends, and feel more conident about themselves. PM: Are there other styles of dances you teach or enjoy? DB: I love every style of dance. In my classes I teach a variety of dance styles including: salsa, merengue, reggaeton, samba, and soca.

PM: You must be very busy teaching 3 classes per week, plus you have a children, correct? DB: I love to keep myself busy. Along with teaching Zumba classes I’m a full-time realtor. My family consists of two wonderful children, my husband, and my dog Rocco. My eldest child is in college and my youngest child is a senior in High School. My family is my greatest motivation to work hard and to be a better person every day. PM: Do you have any other hobbies or interest? DB: Beyond Zumba, I enjoy home décor, lipping properties, playing volleyball, and spending time with my family and friends.

There has been a lot of discussions lately about garbage, recycling and bulk pick up. Some correct Information has been shared but, unfortunately, there has also been a lot of incorrect information spread to residents. First I want to provide a little bit of history of this process: The old contract for garbage pickup and disposal was at a cost of $23.35/month and on October, 2021 a CPI increase of $0.28/month was added ($23.63 total). The garbage contract was due to expire in May, 2021 so the City needed to go out to bid for those services. The residential garbage rate at that time was $23.63/month and was for twice weekly green bin and once weekly blue bin pick up. On May 4, 2021 the City opened 3 proposals and 1 ''No Bid" from the following vendors: WastePro of Florida, Republic Services of Florida, Eastern Waste Systems, Inc. and the "No Bid'' was from Coastal Waste & Recycling, Inc. The RFP required each of the vendors to respond to the various garbage components individually (residential regular solid waste, residential recycling, household hazardous waste, commercial and bulk waste. Here is the pricing submitted: WastePro was $53.61, Republic Services was $49.62 and EWS was $10.75 (bulk only). Direction was given to city manager to negotiate a contract for lower pricing of solid waste and to also negotiate directly with the vendors for bulk pick up and disposal. The City Manager was able to do that. The newly negotiated contract that started January 1, 2022 saw an increase of only $2.70/month. The new total monthly amount for garbage pickup was then $26.33 not anywhere near the originally proposed monthly Increase of $48-$50. There were changes to the recycling portion of this new contract. Unfortunately, there currently Is no market for recyclables. Actually there was a very low percentage of recycling being done correctly. One wet piece of cardboard or a dirty milk container or a pizza box could possibly contaminate the entire truck! We now commingle our solid waste. Hopefully, sooner rather than later, we will be able to stop comingling and return to separating recyclables. On August 4, 2021 "A motion was made to adopt Proposed Resolution 2021·R-32 approving and authorizing the execution of the original agreement and first amendment to the inter-local agreement with Broward County for solid waste disposal and support services for the purpose of utilizing Waste-To-Energy services provided by Wheelabrator Environmental Systems, Inc." The motion was unanimously approved with a 5-0 vote. Whlle not perfect, this is much better than having garbage taken to a landfill in Central Florida to rot, decay and leech "nastiness" into the underground water system that flows to us here in South Florida and to possibly contaminate our water supply. No one contemplated that by ending the use of the blue

bins it would create such an issue for residents with the "VOLUME" of garbage they produce. My agenda item on the February 2nd City Commission agenda provided for several things to happen: Residents who do not want or need a blue bin can request the city to take them away and store for future use; residents that need a blue bin to handle their "overflow" volume would register with the City and get a sticker for their blue bin so the driver will know to pick It up. I suggested that these blue garbage bins be scheduled for pick up at the same time as one of the regularly scheduled green bin pick ups. By using the same truck for this double pick up it means one less truck on your street. The item (#21) on the February 2nd agenda provided for a $2/month charge for the once weekly (4x/month) blue bin pick up service bringing monthly bills to $28.33 still lower than the proposed rates of $48-$50 and onl\! for those residents requesting this service. That item passed with a 4-1 vote. I have spoken with city manager and staff is working out all the details for residents to request their blue bin be removed or request a sticker and continue use of the blue bin. It is also important to point out that the new contract provides for penalties/fines (liquidated damages) for certain compliance Issues such as missed collections, failure to clean spillage and failure to repair damage done to public or private property. These fines range from $100 - $250 per day, per household or commercial property. It would not make sense to have approved the assessing of fines if there was no method to monitor or validate any failures. For bulk and yard waste pick up there currently is staff going out the day prior to the scheduled pick-ups to ensure that the "piles" meet the requirements of size (maximum of 10 cubic yds) and are acceptable Items. Some definitions: Bulk Waste/Trash shall mean large discarded items including, but not limited to discarded white goods, toilets, pool heaters, sheet metal, bedding, furniture, yard waste and other similar items. Bulk Yard Waste shall mean large accumulations of shrubbery, cuttings, palm fronds or tree limbs, vegetative matter resulting from landscaping maintenance and other items of a similar nature. Grass cuttings and leaves should be bagged and put in green cans. There was also an item (#12) on the February 2nd commission agenda providing information on the disposal of Household Hazardous Waste. Administration recommended participation with the Southeast Florida Governmental Cooperative Purchasing Group RFP with Clean Harbors Environmental Services, Inc. That was approved and beginning April 2nd residents will be able to take their household waste for disposal at 13976 Pembroke Road.

In response to requests from residents, the City Commission recently amended the Waste Pro agreement to allow residents to use their blue recycling carts for co-mingled solid waste and recyclable debris. Beginning May 1, 2022, for an extra fee of $2.00 per month, which will be billed on the resident’s monthly water or sanitation invoice, residents may elect to participate and place their blue cart out for service on a once weekly basis, on the day previously assigned as their recycling day. To request this “blue cart service” please contact the city’s hauler Waste Pro at 954-967-4200. Residents will

need to provide Waste Pro with City of Pembroke Pines account # located on resident’s monthly water or sanitation bill; Resident name, address and phone #. After Waste Pro receives this request they will affix a decal to the resident’s blue cart which can now be placed out for service on the next previously assigned recycling day. Residents cannot place the blue cart out for service until the decal has been affixed to the cart. Residents who DO NOT need the use of their blue cart and no longer wish to keep it at their home should contact the City’s Public Services Department at 954-518-9060 to request removal of the recycling cart.

The City of Pembroke Pines is proud to announce our new partnership with Clean Harbors Environmental Services, who will provide household hazardous waste drop off events for our residents. The property manager shared the following suggestion to reduce the bulk when recycling water bottles. The technique is simple and reduces the bulk significantly.

1

Loosen the bottle cap to allow air to come out

2

Compress bottle between the palms of both hands

3

When the bottle is maximally compressed, tighten the bottle cap.

4

You should now have a fully compressed bottle taking up less than a third of the bulk space of a non compressed bottle.

Nuisance Corner Do We Have A Dog Feces Problem? We have found that municipalities in New York State and the city of Tel Aviv in Israel have implemented a Dog DNA testing program that will require all dog owners to register their dogs DNA on a Genetic Database that the cities have contracted with. The cities will: 1. Require dog owners to present their pets for cheek-swab DNA testing so the cities can track pooper scooper scofflaws. 2. Feces found on the premises will be checked against the database to collar the guilty party. 3. The guilty party will be administered a fine. The cities have implemented this policy in response to homeowner and pedestrian complaints about an increase in dog waste around the landscape.

What Do You Think? Do We Have A Problem? Please submit your comments to Ruth Euler the Life Style & Activities Director @ lifestyle@pembrokefalls.org. We will share the comments in the next edition of the magazine.

The streets and intersections of the community are continually being defaced by one or more of our neighbors. If you witness this illegal behavior, please report your observation to management.
