Holiday season is upon us. Help keep your packages safe! Here are tips from law enforcement, the U.S. Postal Service and delivery firms: 1) Retrieve a package as soon as it arrives. Or avoid delivery by using ship-to-store or curbside pickup. 2) Use a tracking feature to check online when a package is scheduled to arrive. UPS, for example, has UPS My Choice to help track and reroute package deliveries. 3) Request that your package is sent with the “signature required” feature so it can’t be delivered without one. 4) If you’re not going to be home, set up a specific delivery time when you will be. Or have the package sent to a trusted person who will be home. 5) Choose an alternative pickup location. FedEx has more than 14,000 sites in the U.S. including FedEx Offices, FedEx Ship Centers and retailers including Walgreens, Albertsons, Kroger and Dollar General. UPS Access Point locations for pickups include the UPS Store, Michaels, CVS, Advance Auto Parts and self-service lockers. Amazon uses Amazon Lockers. For a fee, USPS offers a “Package Intercept” feature, although not all parcels are eligible. 6. If you are leaving town, ask for your shipments to be held. USPS’ free “hold mail” requests must be for at least three days and for a maximum of 30 days. FedEx accepts vacation holds for up to 14 days; it also will store your delivery for free fo up to five days at many locations. 7. Consider a security camera. Some signal your phone, tablet or personal computer if your doorbell is rung. 8. Instruct delivery firms where to leave your package so it isn’t visible from the street. It could be the side of your house. Or a hiding place. 9. Get an app. The FedEx mobile app lets package recipients electronically sign for a package, request a vacation hold or choose a hold at one of its locations. Some security cameras let you use an app to watch over your home from your smartphone. UPS lets you track your shipment on its app.

2021 Singles Tennis Tournament Results Players in our Pembroke Falls Championships lucked out with our first breath of cooler air for their Saturday early round matches. Twenty-seven players comprised of men, women and juniors competed in two Divisions that saw many matches come down to close tiebreakers that decided who advanced. The event was organized and officiated by Coaches Pat and Anita Mason, with all finalists receiving gift cards to the Fresh Market. The two Sunday evening finals were both well-played, entertaining matches. In the 3.5 Division, top-seeded Jumel Pluvoise out-steadied second seed Roberto Rodriguez in a grueling match with lots of long rallies that covered the whole court. In the 4.0 Division, new resident David Paz and former Champion Julio Zambrano had an exciting, heavy hitting battle with big serves and spectacular groundstroke rallies. Spectators were impressed with Davids explosive and accurate hitting, countered by Julio’s excellent movement on the court. David’s pace and shot placement eventually was the difference, making this singles finale arguably the best Championship we have experienced. Congratulations to our winners and all who competed!

Finalists Roberto Rodriguez and Jumel Pluviose

Mens’ 4.0+ Finalist Julio Zambrano and 2021 Club Singles Champion David Paz

PM What village do you live in and how long have you been here in Pembroke Falls? DB My wife and I moved into Pembroke Falls in 2002. We love the community so much that in 2015 we sold our first home in Heritage and purchased one in Heron Cay.

PM How did you become interested in meteorology? DB I became interested in meteorology at a very young age. My father was a daily watcher of the weather and kept weather records at his home in Jacksonville, Florida. His fascination with weather rubbed off on me. By the time I was in high school, I knew I wanted to pursue a meteorology degree and become a weather forecaster. I have worked for the National Hurricane Center for 28 years. PM What is your job like as a storm approaches? DB It becomes extremely hectic. I am working long hours and must prepare my home and ensure my family is ready. The key is having all my supplies on hand at the beginning of hurricane season. When Hurricane Irma threatened South Florida in 2017, a few of the forecasters were sent to our backup facility near Washington, D.C. to ensure that forecasts and life-saving information would continue to flow, even if South Florida took a direct hit. That required traveling several days ahead of the storm. In addition to work and home preparedness activities, lots of friends and family in South Florida call and text me with storm and preparedness-related questions! Trust me, it is a busy time! PM What is the overall situation for southeast Florida this winter? DB The NOAA Climate Prediction Center is forecasting above normal temperatures, but generally drier than average conditions for South Florida during the next few months due the emergence of La Nina conditions in the eastern Pacific. PM You are also an avid road cyclist. How did you get into cycling? DB At the beginning of 2011, I made a New Year’s

resolution to exercise more and set a goal of riding 1000 miles that year. After riding a mountain bike and reaching that goal, a friend suggested I try road biking. I was reluctant but eventually purchased a road bike and joined the Weston Warrior cycling group. I’ve been hooked ever since. The group has organized rides on both Saturday and Sunday out of Weston with routes to Pembroke Pines on Saturdays and to Davie on Sundays. PM How many days a week do you ride? DB I typically ride 4-5 times a week. During the weekend group rides, we will ride 30-40 miles, sometimes longer. On weekdays it depends on the shift I’m working and how much free time I have. I often ride a “quick” 10 miles within Pembroke Falls. PM Any favorite local routes you recommend? DB On the weekends, I typically ride with my cycling group but during the week, I have a few routes within or just outside of Pembroke Falls. Some days you may see me on a trail bike going in and out of different villages within Pembroke Falls, and on other days I ride my road bike to Sunshine Ranches/Davie or to C.B. Smith Park to ride laps. My favorite local route is through Sunshine Ranches where there is significantly less traffic. It feels like you are riding in a rural area as I often see horseback riders and peacocks; I am always amazed it is such a short distance from Pembroke Falls. If you have never ventured into that area, you definitely should!

ACTIVATION OF THE LAWN LANTERNS Recently the MBOD approved revisions to the ARB Stipulations that will have an impact on front lawns, beds and the overall ambiance of the community. Item 21. Light Fixtures indicates that “the front lamp post is optional, however, if installed must be operational (gas or electric) and that the lantern can remain white or must match the garage door light fixtures in color”. The ARB stipulation only requires that the Lantern be FUNCTIONAL. The stipulation DOES NOT require homeowners to have the lamp on at any time. Those few homeowners with active gas lanterns need not change. Conversion and activation of light posts will improve security, safety and ambiance, add value to the property and improve the nighttime appearance of the community. For those who are not aware of the Lanterns history, the original gas lanterns fell dormant overtimedue to hurricane safety concerns, the fragility of the gas wicks, the cost of gas and the TECO Gas company fees to come out to turn the gas back on after a weather event. Costs of conversion of the lamp will vary based on the condition of the post, the proximity of the post to an outdoor electric outlet, etc. Consult your electrician, plumber contractor for estimates. Just imagine being able to take secure night walks with your families within your illuminated villages. It would be stunning! Let’s light up the community! For those who want to visualize what the project may entail see : You Tube Video: Charm-Lite, DYI How to Video 12/26/2007 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=woh1j-QKQI

Nuisance Corner One or more of our neighbors are actively and systematically defacing the streets and intersections in our community. This behavior is illegal, and the perpetrators can be prosecuted for defacing private property. Those involved are urged to cease and desist with this behavior or risk legal action. Thank you for your cooperation. We want to keep our community beautiful. Photo is of four way stop on 136 & Taft.
