RESIDENT SPOTLIGHT Resident Spotlight Good People Doing Good Things This edition we shine a light on Linna Chacon and Ricardo Mundarain, a Cascades couple working with a Cycling Club “Team Galiz”, a large group of athletes with a dedicated mission to help people in the community.
Linna is a Middle and High School teacher and Captain of the Galiz Triathlon team and Special support team. Ricardo is a Tech Sales Engineer of a Security Systems company and is a Board Director of Team Galiz, plus captain of the Galiz MTB (mountain bike) race team.
In addition to participating in many sports, Team Galiz takes on charitable work projects, outfitting transport vans and home remodeling for people with mobility limitations, and partnering people with disabilities to be 2-person teams in sporting events.
PM How did you and Linna get started? RM Thankfully I met Linna through the club. She was an athlete riding with Team Galiz since 2012. I’d been Mountain biking since 1991. We decided to join the Road team to try and take our fitness to the next level. With the help of experienced club members, some former pros, our road riding improved.
PM What are your weekly group trainings like? RM On the road we ride from the corner of Griffin and Flamingo every Saturday and Sunday, 7:00am summers and 7:30am after the time change. Mountain biking is usually a 6:30pm Tuesday and Thursday ride on the Levee out of Markham Park in Weston. Swim workouts are at LA Fitness Wednesdays and Fridays at 5:45am For the triathletes group, the runs vary on what events are coming up.
The interview was conducted by contributing editor and tennis coach Pat Mason (PM).
PM Is Team Galiz primarily a road and mountain bike oriented race team? RM Team Galiz is a cycling Club. We are also 501C non-profit foundation to promote both cycling and health in our community. PM How many members do you have now? RM We have130 Members between our 4 divisions: Road, Mountain Bike, Triathlon, and Gravel.
PM How did the Team Galiz group come about? RM In 2008 a group of family members and friends decided to participate in the Multiple Sclerosis charity ride (MS150) from Miami to Key Largo. The experience was very positive. Shortly after the ride the group grew and grew to include more friends, and parents. We gained sponsorship from Galiz Research, a Miami company specializing in clinical trials.
PM There are many teams in South Florida. The amount of charity work that Team Galiz does for the community and its members, particularly support for people with disabilities, is impressive. RM Team Galiz’s involvement with community charities is an important mission of the Club. We help people with disabilities enjoy events. We partner with Thumbs Up International, pairing Athletes with people with disabilities to participate on sporting events.
PM Do you have contact information for people that want to get involved? RM Sure, the information is:
