Espace 251 Nord: 35 Years of Exhibition Images (Or Itinerary of an
This is not (only) a book of images.
This is not (only) an anthology or compendium.
The publication of this retrospective work relating the many years of activity of a contemporary Arts’ Centre is no mean feat.
It aims to present the archives of Espace 251 Nord which, during its 35 years of existence, has not only welcomed a large number of artists, but has also helped to introduce them to the world by participating, even initiating artistic events in Belgium and internationally.
Unable to quote them all, they are revealed in the course of the pages and chapters.
Some launched their careers at Espace 251 Nord, in the 80s, and are now world famous. Others, as young emerging talent, are in the process of earning such a reputation.
Espace 251 Nord, inseparable from its director and founder, has been by their side during international events and has also encouraged a positive welcome and assisted the artists’ mobility with exchanges and exhibitions in coproduction.
Wallonie-Bruxelles International supports the publication of this reference work, which provides an overview of contemporary creation in the Wallonia-Brussels Federation.
Allowing readers, whether they be professionally involved in artistic creation or simply curious amateurs, to (re)discover artists and their work promoted in this book, but above all inside Espace 251 Nord and beyond, in both personal and collective exhibitions.

An art school cannot be an enclosed space. It must be very open to the world and more specifically open to the world of art. The Academy of Liège has always ensured it remains in touch with societal developments and with the state of creation in its most lively form, if only by the profile of teachers who work there and by their professional activities outside of their of teaching responsibilities.
In the same vein, the Academy has always maintained connections with cultural operators: museums, art centres, galleries, theatres, publishing houses and so on. The objective is notably to involve personalities outside of the school environment in the training processes of our students and make the latter aware of the realities of artistic work. But not only that. It is also a way to support them after their studies by setting up co-productions, whether it is publications, exhibitions or plays.
The list of artists trained at the Academy who, have worked with Laurent Jacob since the mid1980s is long. The selection of their works in exhibitions like Place Saint-Lambert Investigations in 1985, Portraits de scène à l’île aux phoques on the sidelines of the Venice Biennale the following year or Le Jardin de la Vierge at the former Old England Establishments in Brussels in 1993, testifies to the relevance of their studies. Several generations have succeeded each other on the picture rails of Espace 251 Nord, from Jacques Lizène, Michel Boulanger and Jean-Pierre Ransonnet to Charles-Henri Sommelette as well as Marc Angeli, Babis Kandilaptis and many others. The present work provides a complete history and, at the same time, demonstrates the vitality and influence of the visual arts in Liège.

A foundation dedicated to arts and culture in the Liège province
birth of a foundation
In 2017 the Liège Province Foundation for Art and Culture, chaired by Paul-Émile Mottard, came into being. This foundation, mainly dedicated to the visual arts, is now a vector of cultural dynamism and development in the Liège Province.
Initiated by Guy Vandeloise and Juliette Rousseff, a pair of Liège artists wishing to bequeath their heritage to the Liège Province, this officially recognised non-profit foundation concludes an alliance between the Provincial Institution, the two artists and the visual arts.
several funds tailored to different philosophies
Both the origins and functioning of the Foundation are quite unique.
In addition to the Vandeloise / Rousseff fund, still subject to growth, the Foundation has created other segregated funds that showcase different philosophies and aesthetics of art through their collection.
its missions
Safeguard the artistic heritage of the Liège Province and fight against dismantling the collections; prospecting for patrons; acquire works, conserve them and carry out a scientific study on them; make a collection of works and objects available to museums or communities that provide a different perspective on donor artists; create a comprehensive annotated catalogue of the acquired works available for any researcher or institution via the Internet, etc.
In order to bring visibility to artists throughout their lives and beyond, the Foundation offers various activities such as the organisation of exhibitions and meetings and offers a framework for reflection, analysis and actions on the issue of artists and art. It works to promote other initiatives with similar goals and to create a collection of catalogues and works of reflection highlighting its missions and the artists it promotes.
Attentive to cultural diversity, the Foundation is open to all artists, both young and old alike. However, a selection committee endeavours to analyse the relevance and coherence of applications so as to respect the general philosophy that led to its creation.
The Liège Province Foundation for Art and Culture: a place of conservation, study, meetings, debates and research relating to the arts.

Liège Province Foundation – Art and Culture
The non-profit organisation Espace 251 Nord (E2N) was created in Liège in 1984. Laurent Jacob invited a few close associates to join his executive board, including the visual artist Johan Muyle. The association immediately began its activities in the Quartier Nord area, at 251, rue Vivegnis, in a classified industrial building: the former headquarters of the Bonne-Espérance, Batterie, Bonne-Fin and Violette coalmines, built at the end of the 19th century. Still marked by the spirit of revolution of the 1960s and 1970s, the ‘Fervent city’ continued to be a multicultural melting pot. However, it was falling apart, lodged in economic and institutional failure indicating that the old ways of doing things were over. A void was created, which would be filled by the dynamism of the local association network.
From the mid-1980s, Laurent Jacob expressed a desire to remove Belgian community barriers and to work on extending the visibility of the French-language scene on an international level. In 1984, he organised Peintres de Flandre following the idea that you must be able to host before you export. A year later, the first major proposal took place in Liège: Place Saint-Lambert Investigations which defined the positioning of Espace 251 Nord as a centre of production for exhibitions understood as artistic practices. Co-organised with Johan Muyle, the project brought together Belgian artists from the south and the north of the country in the basements of the city centre; but above all, it opened other horizons thanks to the presence of foreign artists and through the support of both institutional and private European operators.
The operations in Italy began at the same time, with a first exhibition in 1986 at the Sala Uno, in Rome, and participation in the fringe at the Venice Biennale. Portraits de scène à l’Île aux Phoques at Casa Frollo presented an international selection as a reaction to the territorial nature of the pavilions in the Giardini; many observers recognised an expatriation strategy when Jan Hoet, seeking a leadership position, organised Chambres d’amis in Ghent. Through relations with Luk Darras, the then attaché at the Belgian Embassy, it was possible to set up Arte in Situazione – Belgica – Situazione dell’Arte in Rome the following year: the selection included 40 artists in 21 locations, involving 13 galleries, five collectors’ houses, the Belgian Academy and the French Academy at Villa Medici, where a historical event was staged, L’Inimmaginario belga, curated by Achille Bonito Oliva. The following events reveal links that shed light on the stakes and positioning of E2N in the geography of contemporary art. In 1988, Belgicisme – Objet dard was displayed at Casa Frollo. And further proposals followed for ensuing editions of the Biennale. The most notable ones took place in 1999 with the Horror Vacui (Ann Veronica Janssens and Michel François) in the Belgian Pavilion, attributed to the French Community, and En attendant l’année dernière in a fringe event involving 15 interventions. In 2001, E2N participated again with La trahison des images at Palazzo Franchetti in the museum district, together with Johan Muyle’s solo exhibition at the Serra dei Giardini in Castello. As a way of commenting on the event, the exhibition Le colloque des chiens was presented in Liège and Paris; Laurent Jacob conceived it in an effort to understand the relationships between the official event and the fringe event which, for him, is a breeding ground for both experimentation and visibility: “Espace 251 Nord’s proposals for Venice have always been conceptualised with maximum creativity in mind. This can be seen in the fringe ‘actions’, such as the distribution of the facsimile of La nuit transfigurée by Éric Duyckaerts in 2007 or the 100 images dans la ville collage in 2009. For the 2012 edition, I proposed a project called Résurgences de l’enfoui to the Wallonia-Brussels Federation, which was to be presented as a side-event at the Accademia; following its selection, the Ministry of Culture didn’t see fit to grant this operation the necessary budget, even though it didn’t exceed the usual sum allocated to such an event. The possibility of too great a success was fatal to this awkward exhibition!”
The story of Espace 251 Nord reveals a multitude of stakes. The events organised in Brussels at the former Old England department store (the current Musée des Instruments de Musique) raised questions concerning the possibility of setting up a permanent French-speaking structure in the Belgian capital, specifically dedicated to contemporary art. Le jardin de la Vierge (1993), Toscani Al Muro (1994) and Les fragments du désir (1995) developed as collections on show according to a specific approach to each event: the first one was treated as a private collection; the second one was associated with pieces produced for advertising campaigns; and the third was based on the institutional segment. These projects opened up opportunities for reflection on theoretical and practical subjects, in particular the exhibition of artworks in non-museum contexts. In Brussels once again, E2N used the former Entrepôt Royal Tour & Taxis: the first time within the framework of Brussels 2000 (Métamorphoses) but, above all, with Ici & maintenant / Hier & nu – Belgian System (2001), which involved a hundred or so artists and welcomed over 50,000 visitors in just two months. Following this success, the promoters of Lille 2004 entrusted Laurent Jacob with a prospecting mission and then with the position of curator of Afriques at Tri Postal; the exhibition was presented in the fringe at the Venice Bienniale professional days in 2005, in the form of a book (Black Box. Les Afriques) whose impact helped to establish an African pavilion at the Arsenale in 2007.
Alongside these operations, Espace 251 Nord conducted smaller but equally significant projects. For instance, there is the network of relations in the Euregio and especially in Flanders; exchanges were organised in collaboration with NICC, Air Antwerpen and Extra-City. There was also support for artists in the medium and long term. With Liège as the foundation stone, fundamental work was carried out on the production, exhibition and distribution of works by very different personalities from the French-speaking scene. “It’s difficult to establish an order”, explains Laurent Jacob. “There are ‘older artists’ like Alain D’Hooghe, who participated in the 9th Paris Biennale in 1975, Jacques Charlier, Michel Boulanger, Michel Antaki and especially Jacques Lizène. Boulanger plays a special role because of the visibility offered him through his participation in Natures de l’espace in the Belgian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 1978. Then there is my generation. For instance, Éric Duyckaerts, Babis Kandilaptis, Marc Angeli, Jean-Marie Gheerardijn and Johan Muyle. Then come the younger artists like Michaël Dans, Messieurs Delmotte, Benoît Platéus, Charlotte Beaudry and Pierre-Étienne Fourré. I became attached to this ‘Liège School’. For me, it is defined by an inclination to disrupt the limits of art and life. Most of these artists are into everything: painting, drawing, sculpture, performance, video, writing. There is a climate of emulation, a lot of joy, enthusiasm. There are also those from Brussels, some of whom I already frequented during my studies at La Cambre in the late 1970s. For instance, Ann Veronica Janssens, Daniel Deltour, Patrick Regout. There’s also Jean Glibert, Angel Vergara, Marcel Berlanger and Michel François whom I met in 1985.”
Besides the interest of exhibitions like Jardin d’hiver (2011), Batterie (2013), Les mains libres (2015) and Résurgences (2018), the past years have revealed a desire to organise a centre for contemporary visual arts in Liège, in the Quartier Nord area. Using a large-scale operation (Images publiques, 2006) as his basis, Laurent Jacob studied how to associate spaces for exhibitions, mediation, creation, residency, support and theoretical research. The result was the integration of the historical installations of Espace 251 Nord, Résidences-Ateliers Vivegnis International, SPACE Collection, the former Haecht Brewery and La Comète; in the past ten years, works by Marcel Berlanger (2010), Ann Veronica Janssens (2012), Lionel Estève (2017), Damien De Lepeleire (2018), Aurélie Gravas (2018), Michel François (2018), Gabriel Kuri (2018) and Harold Ancart (2018) have been presented in this repurposed cinema.

“All I can say is that drawing is the best way – and the most readily-available means – to project and express an experience. In a somewhat undefined landscape, pastel and charcoal are applied to the support in powder form. The first one by rubbing, the second one with a brush. And although they extend right to the edge, nothing or almost nothing fills the surface of the drawing, albeit a horizon line and a few very light strokes. Just like a painting, the drawings have preserved the frame and the border. For other drawings, a branch of charred willow allows me to build up and saturate the space with various black strokes, to then remove a few pieces of ash and perhaps evoke a starry sky. The drawings in the series entitled Éther paysage are based on views by NASA artists such as the revised landing target for Mars Rover Curiosity, used for the invitation card.” (excerpt from the text by Sofia Boubolis, in the visitor’s guide, 2018)

“En Piste!” 2018– Jef Geys
07.09 → 09.09.2018
As part of “En Piste !” 2018 in La Boverie, Liège For the fourth consecutive year, the galleries and art centers in Liège joined forces to exhibit their artists. In 2018, La Boverie hosted 33 of them.
“By exhuming an inconceivable number of paintings from the reserves of the Wallon Art Museum to cover an entire wall of the exhibition space, Jef Geys uses his customary irony to direct the viewer towards his own perception of the works and their meaning. Poor quality paintings, historical residues, old-fashioned paintings, little-known masterpieces? How can we tell? Are these paintings worth less than the others on permanent display? Are they worth less than the series of paintings that Geys himself has had made by a manufacturer, upon which are the same repeated motifs of a house next to where a gigantic spade has been planted? What do we judge: the work or its product?”

– Art Brussels
Art Brussels is one of the most established art fairs in Europe. With a stellar line-up of participants for its 37th edition, it maintains an international profile bringing together 148 selected galleries from 32 countries across three sections; 99 in ‘Prime’, 38 in ‘Discovery’ and 13 in ‘Rediscovery’ and one sub-section with 23 solo presentations. On top of the selected galleries, Art Brussels has launched a new ‘Invited’ section comprised of 9 emerging galleries or art spaces that transcend the typical gallery format.
– Book Launch
On the occasion of Art Brussels 2019, a book launch was organized on the premises of the fair itself to show the first presentation sheets fresh from the printers to the Belgian and international public, and to communicate the next scheduled book presentations to be held in Belgium and France at the start of the 2019 academic year.

To reach out to cultural and artistic participators from all over the world, Espace 251 Nord was present at the Venice Biennale during the first three professional opening days from the 8th to the 10th of May 2019. Based at Latteria Moderna, on Via Garibaldi, between the Giardini and the Arsenale, the Espace 251 Nord team (increased in number for this occasion) offered nearly 450 copies of a preview edition of the 392-page book
‘E2N Active Archives’. Each copy of the book was handed over in exchange for an international professional contact detail. With the aim of making professionals aware of the work of Espace 251 Nord (and, thus, in turn, the work of numerous artists from the Wallonia-Brussels Federation as well), this successful promotional action was highly supported by Wallonia-Brussels International.

“En Piste !” 2019 “En attendant l’année dernière E2N Archives Actives”
“Troc/Exchange Sessions”
24.10 → 28.10.2019 La Boverie, Liège
The monograph presented at En Piste is based on the idea of “Active Archives” as established by Espace 251 Nord since its inception. Laurent Jacob was intent upon preserving as much information and documentation as possible to form a concise inventory; each project leaving a trace as an available creative tool for future use.
The archive comes together as an ‘image album’. It follows the history of Espace 251 Nord's activities over the years, and documents exhibitions selected for their representations. The book takes us back through to 36 specific projects from the approximate 190 projects in E2N’s history. Its ‘folded’ layout design allows us to alternate between two timelines: one chronological and the other a-chronological, so that the oldest exhibition can be associated with the most recent and so on and so forth. Breaking the fixed structure of a common linear narrative, this ‘laced’ configuration reveals relationships
and associations over a long period of time. Any alternative presentation structure used would not allow for the same clever cross-referencing. And above all, this specific and unique book design corresponds to the retrospective dynamic that underlies the evolution of Espace 251 Nord. Placed in chronological order, the history constitutes an exhaustive catalogue of the events organized from 1983 to the present day. For each entry, it includes the original colophon down to the details of the team and supporters; and where appropriate, an anthology of images and texts is included. This information can be read as a raw material open to hermeneutics.
Particular attention has been paid to the illustration of the book. The album reproduces images from a conception of exhibition photography in which the focus is on the works rather than on the context surrounding them; they allow (re) discovery of the 36 selected events. On the other hand, the history gives pride of place to ‘collateral’ iconography : invitation cards, posters, views of the sites, prospecting activities, artist portraits, moments of assembly and dismantling, views of places frequented during visiting hours, exhibition openings, etc. Captions are deliberately reduced to basic information.
An index at the end of the book completes the work; in addition to its value as a tool, it reveals the lasting relations between Espace 251 Nord and a considerable number of artists.

Focus on Benoit Platéus”

“Benoît Platéus's photographs are full of visual effects that can evoke elements of science-fiction, possessing a programmatic aspect and revealing issues inherent in his work. The effects of light are omnipresent: overexposures, light spots, reflections, projections, concentric shapes... A photograph plays with the sun on a geographical map with visible folds; a woman appears from behind an ordinary chair who seems to merge with the object itself; elsewhere a window acts as a screen or reflecting mirror... The shots are sometimes grainy and what is often off-camera takes a central place. Each photograph evokes the reverse side, the possibility of another image, another reality, another discourse.” (Virginie Devillez, 2001)

(…) Painting is a means of research (both human and historical), a means of expression ... a dramatic art.
Its culmination is the meeting point between emotion, sensitivity, concrete reflection and plastic.
The images are tinged with a sense of melancholy, and the desire for idealization. Perhaps a need to embellish and cover the past, to depict scenes that depict the human condition. My work is an anthropological study, which allows me to represent what I am living, that is to say, to paint the viewpoint of the now.”
