Rolls-Royce, Volve CE and Air Burners partner to create BioCharger Air Burners has partnered with Rolls-Royce and Volvo Construction Equipment to develop and test the new BioCharger — a portable machine that turns biomass waste into energy. The BioCharger combines three innovative steps to generate off-grid power from vegetative waste. First, it eliminates vegetative waste using air curtain technology, which minimizes harmful particulate matter entering the atmosphere. Then, it converts the residual heat energy into electric energy and stores it in a connected battery storage module. Finally, with the accompanying charging mechanism, the BioCharger allows for off-grid electric vehicle and machinery charging. “While electric machinery becomes increasingly popular

in the fight against climate change, when it comes to forest management, we must have practical solutions for charging electric machinery away from traditional power sources,” said Air Burners President Brian O’Connor. “The Air Burners’ BioCharger provides that solution and manages wood waste, all done in an economical and environmentally conscious way.” Air Burners consulted with Rolls-Royce in developing the battery storage module within the BioCharger, a 450-kWh charging station that can recharge multiple battery-electric machines and tools, from chainsaws to excavators. The BioCharger creates and stores enough energy daily to recharge three to six battery-powered machines. In addition, the BioCharger re-

tains enough energy to start itself and continue the cycle the next day. “The BioCharger is a unique application for our mtu EnergyPack battery energy storage system that I think shows just how versatile energy storage can be,” said Kevin McKinney, Sales Director at Rolls-Royce Solutions America. “The BioCharger’s ability to reduce emissions and generate energy through responsible handling of vegetative waste perfectly aligns with our targets to support our customers with innovative solutions for the transition to clean power generation.” To prove the effectiveness of the BioCharger, Air Burners partnered with Volvo CE to test its charging ability on the 23-ton EC230 Electric excavator, which is currently in its pilot testing phase.

Epiroc AB to acquire Stanley Infrastructure for US$760 million Epiroc AB has agreed to acquire Stanley Infrastructure, a global manufacturer of excavator attachments and handheld hydraulic tools, from Stanley Black & Decker. The strategic acquisition will strengthen Epiroc’s presence in the attachments business in infrastructure and construction. Epiroc will purchase Stanley Infrastructure for US$760 million via an all-cash transaction with secured financing through a bridge facility. “We are very excited about this strategic acquisition, which is a major step to strengthen our long-term presence in the infrastructure and construction industries,” said Helena Hedblom, Epiroc’s President and CEO. “Stanley Infrastructure has industry-leading products, services and solutions with renowned brands, solid customer relationships, and a

strong people culture, which all makes this a perfect fit for Epiroc. Our product portfolios complement each other very well, and this fills some important gaps in our current offering. In addition, we gain access to a broad indirect sales network, which will further diversify and strengthen our footprint. Infrastructure and construction have attractive drivers that include urbanization and scrap recycling for steel production, which will support long-term growth.” Stanley Infrastructure, a business within Stanley Black & Decker’s Industrial business segment, is headquartered in Milwaukie, Oregon. It designs, manufactures, and sells attachments, typically used on excavators, and handheld hydraulic and battery-powered tools for applications in infrastructure, construction, scrap recyc-

ling, demolition and railroad infrastructure. Its brands include LaBounty, Paladin, Pengo and Dubuis. Stanley Infrastructure generated about US$450 million in 2023 and employs about 1,380 employees, mainly in the United States. The business has 10 key production facilities in the United States, Canada, France and China. Most revenue is generated in North America. “Customers will benefit from having access to a more complete product portfolio, which we together will continue to develop to meet customers’ increasing need for versatility and productivity,” said Goran Popovski, President of Epiroc’s Tools & Attachments division. “We look forward to welcoming the great team at Stanley Infrastructure to the Epiroc Group, and to grow successfully together.”

“This collaboration with Air Burners for the BioCharger allows us to demonstrate one of the more non-conventional sources to fast-charge our equipment in off-grid locations,” said Dr. Ray Gallant, Vice President of sustainability and productivity services at Volvo Construction Equipment. Unlike biomass power plants, the BioCharger is a portable machine that can be relocated to a new site and be

operational in about 6 hours. The machine accepts whole logs, root balls, pallets, crates and any other clean wood or vegetative waste without sorting, crushing or grinding. As well, air curtain burners do not require secondary fuel sources like natural gas, reducing costs and easing installation. Vegetative waste is a significant and growing problem. In the United States, 70 million tons of wood waste are collected annually, but only

48 per cent of that waste is recycled, leaving the rest to open burns or decomposition, which releases particulate matter and greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. The BioCharger permanently eliminates up to 20 tons of vegetative waste per hour without emitting harmful greenhouse emissions like methane or black carbon — the second biggest contributor to climate change after carbon dioxide.

Ditch Witch offers a sneak peek of its second Warlock hydrovac Ditch Witch is expanding its new Warlock series of vacuum trucks with the smaller W8 hydrovac, the second truck introduced in the new lineup. Earlier this year, Ditch Witch debuted the W12 Warlock vacuum truck. With a 2,800-psi water system, 4,500 litres of fresh water, a 9,175-litre debris tank and a 5,000 cfm, 27-inch Hg vac system, the W12 is the most powerful vac truck created by Ditch Witch to date. Excavator Product Manager at Ditch Witch, explained the W8 is designed for smaller tasks in urban areas. “If you're going to be out on pipeline jobs, you're going to be way out, you want something with the big capacity of the W12,” Thompson said. “If you're going to be working in the city, sometimes it's better to have something a little more mobile. Something you can dump easier and you can refill easier. So, this is our answer for that.” Ditch Witch offered a preview of the W8, equipped with a 9-litre engine on a Peterbilt chassis, at The Utility Expo in September. The prototype on display featured 3,500 cfm, 21inch Hg of vacuum power, a 6,116-litre debris tank

and a fresh water capacity of 6,056 litres. “Everything is the same concept and all the good things people liked from the 12, but we brought it down to a smaller package,” Thompson said. At 7.9 metres in length, Thompson explained the W12 is an ideal option for potholing or microtrenching on smaller job sites. “Or if you're going to go out and just open up a hole to repair something, this is a great truck to have,” he said. The price point is also smaller, with Thompson estimated the W8 will cost about 25 per cent less than the larger Warlock. “That lets you get your toes into the big trucks without having to go to that larger price tag,” he said.

Arro Crushing expands its fleet with a Keestrack R6 mobile impact crusher In 2019, the founders of Arro Crushing recognized the need to fill a gap in their region’s construction and demolition market. Based in Millbank, Ontario, the new company purchased a crusher at an auction and got to work on smaller cleanup jobs. However, they soon discovered the opportunity to provide aggregate and recycling

across southern Ontario. “We were doing small stuff like cleaning up barns, and kind of recognized an opportunity to get into bigger crushing projects that were coming our way,” said Arro Crushing Owner Jared Kuepfer. With a background in dimensional stone, Kuepfer understood the concept of crushing, but didn’t have any

practical experience. “It's been a total learning experience, from how to crush, to how to run a business, to how to grow it and maintain the customer base and keep the equipment moving,” he said. “I knew that I needed support because of my inexperience. I knew that I needed somebody who's going to back me up if I was in a pinch.”

Keestrack R5 To determine how to tackle the larger crushing jobs, Kuepfer began working with Frontline Machinery, who introduced him to the Keestrack line of crushers. To accommodate larger contracts, Arro purchased a 350 tonne-per-hour Keestrack R5 impact crusher. The Keestrack R5 combines low fuel consumption with productivity. Designed with a load sensing hydraulic system to reduce emissions, the R5 delivers an average fuel savings of 4 to 6 litres per hour. Equipped with a large independent 2-deck pre-screen and reversible prescreen conveyor, the R5 impact crusher minimizes wear and tear on the crushing chamber by removing fines from the material before entering the crusher, ultimately extending the lifespan of the machine. “They understood what we needed to get to the next step,”

Yanmar’s new V7 fills gap in its compact wheel loader line Yanmar Compact Equipment has introduced the all-new V7 compact wheel loader to the North American market. The 4,250-kg machine fills a gap in the Yanmar wheel loader line between the V4-7 and the V8 and features a low operating weight, comfortable cab and high bucket capacity. Its intuitive controls and high travel speeds are designed to maximize performance and efficiency for operators in landscaping, rental, municipalities, snow removal and other applications. “The V7 is perfect for operators looking for a piece of equipment with leading performance while being easy to transport,” said Frank Gangi, Product Manager for compact wheel loaders and attachments for Yanmar Compact Equipment. “An ergonomic cab, low centre of gravity, excellent visibility and high travel speeds all lead to a wheel loader that improves jobsite performance while keeping the operator comfortable and productive.” Yanmar’s V7 features a 703litre bucket. An optional light material bucket brings that bucket capacity to more than a full cubic yard with each scoop, further improving productivity. The compact wheel loader also includes a 47.6-hp Tier 4 Final Yanmar engine. The V7 features ±40 degrees of articulation and ±10 degrees of oscillation. The

machine includes a newly designed articulation oscillation joint allowing oscillation in the centre of the wheel loader instead of the rear. This maximizes ground contact with all four wheels for optimal tractive force. For operator comfort, the machine features a comfortable cab and excellent all-around visibility, making long workdays easier. The enclosed cab configuration features two steel frame doors and a standard front sun blind to reduce glare. The steel frame doors help to improve visibility while adding convenience and ventilation from having doors on both sides of the cab. The V7’s high-backed seat is heated and includes ergonomic armrests and mechanical suspension. Bluetooth-enabled audio provides operators with individualized entertainment. As well, the wheel loader improves safety and convenience with a highly visible, fully integrated and removable rotating beacon. Ergonomic joystick controls simplify machine operation. Creep mode allows for precise attachment control while automatic ride control with limited slip differential improves convenience and efficiency. Operators can easily access relevant machine information and options via a colour display. Yanmar offers the V7 in

canopy and enclosed cab with heat and air conditioning configurations.

V7 efficiency The V7 includes several efficiency-enhancing features. LED lights improve work area visibility while optimizing power consumption. Operators can move around the jobsite faster using the machine’s 30 km per hour travel speed. Hydraulic quick couplers allow fast attachment change-out. Contractors can lift loads without the need for constant readjustment of the load angle thanks to the V7’s parallel kinematics. The feature — also called P-Kinematics — is especially ideal for use with pallet forks as it keeps material level. Yanmar’s V7 is manoeuvrable and easy to transport. The machine’s centre articulation and oscillation joint make it possible for the wheel loader to achieve a 2.5 metre height and a lower centre of gravity, meaning less risk of clearance issues, the ability to fit into shipping containers and better manoeuvrability on tight jobsites. Additionally, the machine’s low operating weight and low centre of gravity improve ease of trailering. The V7 features ease of maintenance for service items and daily check points, including convenient grease point access.

(L to R) Ben Van Manen, project manager for R.V.M. Trucking Inc, and Calvin Vandenbrink, sales specialist for Bobcat of Brantford, outsite R.V.M. Trucking’s shop in Norwich, ON. Ron Van Manen sold his aluminum business in 2001 and decided to open up R.V.M. Trucking Inc., making him the first owner of a stone slinger in the Norwich, Ontario area, along with a couple of dump trucks. As the company had grown and to keep up with the customer’s demands, they now own three stone slingers. Ron’s son Ben, after graduating high school, started working for his father’s business operating a stone slinger. Ben is now a licensed septic designer and installer. R.V.M. specializes in custom homes, waterproofing, excavating, septic design and installation, site services, roads, sewer/ watermains, demolition, small commercial jobs, and a full range of trucking. They are quite diverse and adapt easily to what their customers require. When asked why Bobcat®? Ben replied, “Aside from having a great relationship with Calvin Vandenbrink, sales specialist for Bobcat of Brantford, as I have known him since high school, it was the 0% financing, and they were offering incredible cash incentives too. That’s why we just bought the Bobcat E26 and E88 compact excavator, and the T770 compact track loader. Also, the amount of attachments Bobcat has in their lineup. Even if I don’t purchase them all, I know I can easily rent them from Bobcat of Brantford. Attachments are huge to our business, just plug and play! They also are a dealer for

Rototilt. It saves so much time to get whatever we need for our Rototilt attachment through them. On the service side, Bobcat of Brantford always has our parts in stock. John in service is good to deal with. If for any reason one of our machines is down, they just give us another one in their yard until ours is fixed. That way we are never sweating when the machines aren’t working and losing money and more importantly, our customer jobs won’t be delayed. No other company follows up with us, aside from Calvin Vandenbrink at Bobcat. Bobcat of Brantford is always on top of it for us. Customer service is key,” replied Ben. They use the Bobcat E88 compact excavator (9 tons) for ease of loading triaxle dump trucks, grading, retaining walls, installing septic systems, and small additions, all while using the tilt bucket. “This one is the most versatile excavator for us. It’s a smooth machine with no comparable in visibility to this machine with other brands,” stated Ben. They have three excavating crews and did 75 septic systems last year. Although they only install within an hour from their shop (Kitchener/ Waterloo, Hamilton to Lake Erie), Ben does many septic designs for cottage and country areas across Ontario. “The Bobcat T770 is a perfect tool for us. We use it at every job, for ease of cleaning the road, loading

triaxle dump trucks, moving material, etc. Both these machines’ weight sizes are not a problem to load on their dually trucks with gooseneck trailers. The Bobcat E26 compact excavator is used with our final-grade crew. It can do a lot of work, more than you think. We just did a job laying 1000’ of 4” drainpipes with it and quickly. It also works nicely in inside building plants,” stated Ben. When asked how has it been working with Calvin Vandenbrink, Bobcat of Brantford? Ben replied, “well, it’s different than most as we have known each other for a long time. Calvin started at Bobcat seven years ago and I bought my first Bobcat machines through Calvin so you can say we have grown together. I have even texted him on weekends and he replied. We scrap pretty well during pricing as I have to make the numbers work. I have to be honest, it’s not my favourite part but Bobcat can have aggressive incentives making it an easier decision for me. Therefore, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Calvin Vandenbrink and Bobcat of Brantford. We are a repeat customer. Oh, and by the way, the best part, I called them on December 15th and wanted the Bobcat E88 and T770 machines by our Christmas party on December 20th. They delivered!” Thank you Ben.

Fecon has acquired Stumper Industries, a manufacturer of stump grinder attachments for excavators, skid steers and compact track loaders. The acquisition expands the landscaping solutions Fecon offers in the forestry mulching and vegetation management industries. Stumper’s attachments provide a solution for tree service businesses, landscape companies and farm operations to remove debris with equipment they already own. “We are excited to welcome Stumper into the Fecon family,” said Jeff Stanley, Vice President of product development at Fecon. “After listening to our customers, dealers and the market, we recognized a need for a stump grinder that fits key Fecon attributes such as performance and durability with visibility, simplicity and versatility.” Each Stumper stump grinder offers a unique, lower-speed, high-torque cutting wheel. The attachments’ drive-up and grind design minimizes setup time by primarily cutting on the face of the wheel, increasing productivity with a fast-cutting speed.

The Stumper series features five quick-attach models compatible with compact to heavy-duty machinery. The attachments range from 56-cm to 90-cm cutting diameters with up to 30-cm cut depths. As well, the Stumper grapple attaches to mini skid steers to remove logs and debris from a jobsite. “These stump grinder attachments are a great product extension to Fecon’s existing lineup of forestry attachments that provide our customers with a comprehensive solution for land maintenance needs,” Stanley said. “They add value to our customers’ existing machines by helping them do more with what they already have.” For more than 30 years, Fecon has produced more than 25,000 mulcher heads with a presence on every continent. The acquisition of Stumper’s stump grinders complements Fecon’s current line of mulching attachments and extends Fecon’s reputation in the f o re s t r y mu l c h i ng a n d vegetation management industry.

Once sufficient batter y charge is reached through sunlight or the generator, the controller turns the generator off. "The EHR Solar Battery Generator is a game-changer for companies that want to go to the next level of sustainability with higher energy efficiency to reduce jobsite emissions and fuel use," said Larry Worthington, Vice President, PHVAC Region, United Rentals. SafeAI turns a Cat 725 haul truck into an autonomous, electric machine SafeAI and construction company Obayashi Corporation have unveiled a first-of-its-kind zero-emission, autonomous haul truck. The Caterpillar 725 is the first haul truck retrofitted with autonomous and electrification technology. The truck retrofit helps pave the way for companies to reuse their existing assets while improving operations and reaching sustainability goals. While autonomy and electrification have been implemented independently, this is the first time a haul truck has been successfully retrofitted with both technologies. This enables companies to reuse and upgrade their existing assets while streamlining site operations and improving environmental performance. “Just as our autonomous solution is designed to be open and interoperable to be applied to any make or model vehicle,

we want our solution also to be powered by any energy source. This project is a step in that direction as it showcases how our autonomous ground vehicle stack is EV-compatible,” said Bibhrajit Halder, Founder and CEO of SafeAI. “I am proud of our latest endeavour of retrofitting a Caterpillar 725, marking the world's first haul truck retrofitted with autonomous and electrification technology.” According to SafeAI, marrying automation and electrification creates compounded advantages that are otherwise hard to achieve as independent technologies. For example, the combined technologies enable a more advanced and safer charging infrastructure and workplace while removing employees from dangerous environments as they are not required to operate or refuel vehicles. As well, autonomy’s ability to enable 24/7 operations combined with the lower

operating costs of electric vehicles improve overall productivity and cost-effectiveness, allowing companies to make the most of their assets. Autonomy alone can boost environmental performance on worksites by up to 13 per cent, and by swapping out diesel for electricity, operators can cut net life cycle emissions by more than 60 per cent. While new electric or autonomous vehicles may have steep upfront costs that are a barrier, retrofit technology allows companies to upgrade existing fleets in a more affordable and environmentally friendly way. SafeAI and Obayashi have worked together since October 2020 to address common pain points across construction with autonomous solutions. “When we started working with SafeAI, our partnership focused on safety and

productivity. Now, we’re setting our collective sights on our next goal: to usher in a sustainable future for construction,” said Sugiura Shinya, Business Innovation Division General Manager of Obayashi. SafeAI retrofitted the vehicle with its OEM-agnostic autonomous technology for the project. AVIA Engineering retrofitted the vehicle with a fully electric drive system. “We are proud to be a part of this project at the cutting edge of innovation,” said David Sánchez, owner and CEO of AVIA Engineering. “By retrofitting these vehicles using a 100 per cent electric drivetrain, it allows companies to recycle their existing assets and use them in a better, more sustainable way. Our team, in collaboration with SafeAI and Obayashi, is proud to have successfully integrated a fully electric powertrain and is looking forward to seeing where this first step can take us.”

UBC team deploys AI-powered construction robots Construction sites are evolving into smarter, safer job sites thanks to Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology, according to Dr. Tony Yang, a Structural Engineering Professor at the University of British Columbia (UBC). Yang and his team at the UBC Smart Structures Lab have developed smart construction robots that can perform basic tasks, such as lifting and moving objects around a job site, autonomously transporting materials and monitoring sites for safety issues. The UBC team recently demonstrated the concept at a construction site on Mitchell Island in Richmond, British Columbia. The demonstration in-

cluded the use of aerial drones fitted with cameras to captured details of the construction site. The data was then used to create a digital twin— a simulation of the site. Then, AI-equipped cranes and forklifts used the information to move construction materials, such as beams and columns, around the actual site, navigating around obstacles without a human operator. “Our smart construction robots are able to recognize objects, performing detailed scans of structural components for quality assurance. They can precisely place objects on site and check against a computer model to ensure they’re building

according to plan,” Yang said. "They can make autonomous decisions such as navigating around obstacles or instantly stopping work to protect a worker who is in danger.” Yang is working with several B.C. construction companies to find oppor-

tunities to use smart robots in commercial building projects. He believes smart robots will have a larger role to play in improving construction timelines, increasing worker safety and easing labour shortages in the industry.

“Our made-in-Canada technology is ready to deploy now and can be quickly scaled up, helping to elevate Canadian construction and making us more competitive on the global stage.” Yang explained he expects this technology will

fully mature within the next decade, adding the next era of construction will be fully digitized and allow real-time monitoring of construction activity and knowing where machines, labour and materials are located within a site.

Unicontrol debuts new grade control for dozers Unicontrol has launched its latest development: Automatic Grading Control for dozers. Automatic Grading Control from Unicontrol is designed to make grading simpler for existing and new Unicontrol users. Developed in response to worldwide demand, the solution has received positive feedback from machine operators throughout its extensive testing phase. “At Unicontrol, our dedication to simplifying machine control for operators worldwide is evident in our commitment to innovation,” said Kasper Hartvig, Co-Founder and Chief Product Officer at Unicontrol. “Automatic Grading Control stands as a testament to this dedication, simplifying dozer operation. Our development efforts are closely aligned with real-world challenges on con-

struction sites, where Automatic Grading Control directly addresses the global demand for a solution that make it simpler to obtain precise dozer operation.” Automatic Grading Control is a semi-automatic function that reduces manual grading efforts. Operators simply steer the dozer while the blade automatically adjusts for grading, following terrain and design contours. Using the Unicontrol solution, the operator simply sets the desired slope and grade, and Automatic Grading Control completes the task. The system can achieve accuracy within 1 cm, while reducing re-work, saving fuel and ensuring manpower is more efficient. “It simplifies the levelling operation, enabling the blade to get to fine grade easier on the final pass,”

said Christopher Brown, owner of Elation-Tech, the Canadian distributor of Unicontrol. With the new update for dozers, machine operators experience the ease of grading with Joystick Integration to the Unicontrol machine control system. The system can be toggled on or off directly from a single click of a button using the joystick in the dozer. This creates a seamless experience where the dozer operator does not have to lift a finger from the machine controls. The integration between the joystick and Unicontrol3D offers a quick way to adjust the offset according to the original design file, using the joystick button of any given dozer. This is useful for surfaces that require pavement, asphalt or gravel in the final design.

The offset line can now be adjusted directly from the joystick in the machine, making it easy for dozer operators to tailor the specific needs of a project, without com-

promising the original design file. Creating this offset automatically adjusts the blade of the dozer, and take the offset into account, constantly documenting the process.

Trimble tests autonomous soil compactor in BC Trimble has completed its first test of a fully autonomous soil compactor on a live jobsite. Trimble equipped a Dynapac CA 5000 soil compactor with the Earthworks Grade Control Platform for Autonomous Compactors. The machine was tested on the Site C Clean Energy Project on the Peace River in northeast British Columbia. This is one of the industry’s first public tests of a fully autonomous compactor on a live construction site. “The Site C project was the perfect place to begin live testing of the fully autonomous soil compactor because of the cost and safety benefits autonomy will bring to large infrastructure projects like this in the future, and be-

cause of the willingness of the project owner and contractor to use new technology on their jobsite,” said Cameron Clark, Earthmoving Industry Director for Trimble’s civil infrastructure solutions. “We are pleased that this initial testing reinforces our philosophy that autonomous technology will play an important role in delivering a cheaper, faster, safer and greener future for the construction industry.” On site, the autonomous machine completed 37 hours of compaction work, operating seamlessly alongside a mixed fleet of compactors. The manned machines were running the Trimble CCS900 Compaction Control System. Data from all machines — both with and without an

operator — was delivered using Trimble WorksOS Software, which is being used as the system of record for all compaction data on the jobsite. The Site C Clean Energy Project is a BC Hydro hydroelectric dam being built in northeastern British Columbia. When complete, it will provide 1,100 megawatts of electricity each year, enough to power 450,000 homes or 1.7 million electric vehicles. Prime contractors include ACCIONA Infrastructure Canada and Samsung C&T Canada. The role of ACCIONA and Samsung includes construction of an earthfill dam, two diversion tunnels and a roller-compacted concrete foundation for the generating station and spillways.

“Autonomy plays an important part in Samsung’s vision of a more sustainable future, so it was thrilling to have a fully autonomous compactor being put to the test alongside our fleet of equipment with an operator on this project,” said Yunki Kim, Group Leader of the Construction Automation Team at Samsung C&T.

Current stock for wheel loaders

Trimble will continue with extensive assisted testing through into 2024 before making Trimble Earthworks for Autonomous Compaction available to select customers for beta testing. “This is just the first step in what will be a diligent and careful testing process, but it’s an important step and we are highly encouraged

by the results,” said Aaron Thompson, Vice President of autonomous solutions at Trimble. “We look forward to fine tuning this technology as we move through testing, and to helping propel the industry forward as we work toward a more autonomous, and therefore more sustainable, future.”

ator for an Autonomous Purpose) is a customized Menzi Muck M545 developed for autonomous use cases as well as advanced teleoperation. Menzi Muck spider, or walking excavators, move on four wheels connected to the undercarriage by legs. The legs allow the adjustment of track width and the height of the excavator. This ability to ‘walk’ allows the machine to travel over rough terrain or steep slopes. The machine has novel force-controllable hydraulic cylinders in the chassis that allow it to adapt to any terrain. As well, HEAP is equipped with sensors necessary for autonomous operation, such as LIDARs, IMU, GNSS and joint sensing. Using sensors, the excavator can autonomously draw a 3D map of the construction site and localize existing building blocks and stones for the wall’s construction. Specifically designed tools and machine vision approaches enable the ex-

cavator to scan and grab large stones in its immediate environment. It can also register their approximate weight as well as their centre of gravity. An algorithm determines the best position for each stone, and the excavator then conducts the task itself by placing the stones in the desired location. The autonomous machine can place 20 to 30 stones in a single consignment — about as many as one delivery could supply. The team of researchers behind HE AP included Gramazio Kohler Research, the Robotics Systems Lab, Vision for Robotics Lab, and the Chair of Landscape Architecture. They developed the autonomous excavator as part of the National Centre of Competence in Research for Digital Fabrication (NCCR dfab). The centre aims to revolutionize architecture through the seamless combination of digital technologies and physical building process.

MINING

A NEW ERA IN MINING

Surface mining can improve efficiency with the right setup By Seth Matthesen, Trencor Product Manager New technology and operating methods can be difficult to embrace, especially for mining companies that have operated the same way for decades. A growing number of mining and cement companies, however, are embracing surface mining technology in their operations to extract minerals and ore. Not only can surface miners create safer jobsites, but they also offer efficiency and environmental benefits that conventional mining methods cannot. As more companies roll surface miners out to jobsites around the world, it’s important that best practices for configuring, operating and maintaining the machines are put into play. Doing so can help keep the machines running at peak efficiency — and help crews create the most tonnage possible every day on a jobsite — as well as protect machine uptime. Here are three activities that are key to the success of every job:

Select the best machine for the job Maximizing the productivity of surface miners begins long before the machines start pulverizing rock. One of the most critical things to do before any job is to scout the site. This can help operators better understand the ground conditions of the mining area, aiding in machine selection. By taking core samples from multiple locations on the jobsite, crews can evaluate the rock to determine what machine and configuration is needed for the job, as well as the optimum cutting direction to optimize production. Sampling the jobsite will help mining companies understand if they’ll need a larger, heavier and higher-horsepower surface miner or if a smaller, lighter and less-horsepower option that’s easier to transport can get the job done. But beyond size and power, companies should also consider the mechanics of their surface miner. For instance, some surface miners are hydraulically-powered or belt driven, and some are mechanically-powered and chain driven. Hydraulics provide a reliable way to transmit power, but they’re less efficient because they involve compression of fluids and often experience pressure drops. A surface miner that builds up torque with a mechanical powertrain can deliver the higher torque that operators

need to power through challenging ground conditions. Finally, when considering which machine will be best for the job, companies should seek to understand what level of OEM support they’ll receive. These are all important considerations for selecting the best surface miner for the job, especially for machines that will be operated in remote mines where swapping out their machine may not be an option.

Learn how to efficiently operate the machine Once a crew understands the demands of the job, setting up the machine for efficient operation is key to getting started. Surface miners have a wide range of drum and tooth configuration options depending on the ground conditions. Using the right configuration will ensure the machine works as efficiently as possible. A solid, heavy-duty mining drum is ideal for dense, harder rock, while a raiser type drum used for increased fragmentation is better suited for softer and layered ore. Drums with raisers allow the teeth to stand off from the drum and can give the cut ore more room to pass through and be cleared out. Several technologies like a fire-suppression system, raised engine air inlet system, wireless maintenance remote, fast-fill fuel kit and camera systems can be configured to the surface miner to help manage risks and maximize productivity. When it comes to turning the machine on and operating, surface miners are all about managing speeds and feeds. The key is for operators to find the right balance between the speed at which they advance the machine’s ground drive and the speed at which they rotate the drum and crush rock to achieve optimal productivity. Go too slow, and the machine won’t be as productive as it could be. Go too fast, and the operator risks driving into rock too quickly and stalling the machine. Increasingly intelligent machines and new technology can also help operators maximize productivity. A surface miner can use a load-control system, for instance, to always keep the engine under full load. The system monitors engine rpm and controls the track speed to keep the engine loaded at the optimal point of the power curve for maximum power output and performance.

Perform routine maintenance Performing recommended maintenance routinely can help keep surface miners functioning at peak performance and reduce the risk of unplanned downtime. The first place to start is by reading the machine’s operator manual, so crews understand crucial information like general maintenance schedules for machine parts. Crews can then plan maintenance of those parts accordingly, whether it’s cleaning the radiator and oil cooler after every 50 hours of machine use or replacing the engine and transmission oil filters after every 500 hours of use. Additionally, daily maintenance checks will help keep the machine in optimal working condition. For example, crews should inspect a surface miner’s teeth regularly throughout the shift to help maintain machine efficiency and protect the integrity of the digging assembly. If the carbide tip on a tooth is cracked, fractured or missing, crews should immediately replace it with a new tooth.

Finally, mining companies should know how technology on their surface miners can ease and reduce maintenance. An automated greasing system, for instance, automatically brings grease to all machine points that require daily greasing. This can free up operators by eliminating the need for them to manually do this daily. Telematics can also improve how companies maintain their surface miners. By accessing machine information through a web portal, companies can remotely monitor their machines, facilitate troubleshooting data processing and improve the management and productivity of machines across jobs.

Embrace the new While new technology and methods can be a bit daunting to embrace, they can pay dividends in efficiency, safety and more. By following best practices for machine selection, set-up, use and maintenance, operators can make a smooth transition to using a surface miner in the new year.

Epiroc introduces two electric-driven Pit Vipers Epiroc has announced two additions to the Pit Viper blasthole drill rig family, the Pit Viper 231 E and Pit Viper 235 E. The new electric-driven blasthole drills offer operators safer, cleaner and more sustainable operations while maintaining productivity and reliability. Equipped with Epiroc’s Rig Control System (RCS), both drills offer advanced on-board and off-board automation that significantly enhances safety, accuracy, and productivity.

Epiroc's electric-driven blasthole drills are zero-emission machines, making operations cleaner and more sustainable. With electric power at the core, the blasthole drills eliminate the need for traditional fuel, leading to savings in operational costs. "The Pit Viper 231 E and Pit Viper 235 E are part of our vocation to create greener drills that enable our customers to produce metals and minerals in the most sustainable way possible,"

said Yara Hussein, Epiroc’s Global Product Manager Midrange Blasthole. The Pit Viper 231 E can drill 152 mm to 250 mm holes with up to a 16.1 metre capability. The Pit Viper 235 E can drill holes up to 171 mm to 270 mm diameter. Both machines provide a full range of options to meet current and future needs, without compromising safety or operational cost-effectiveness. The Pit Viper 231 E and Pit Viper 235 E drill rigs

HYDRAULIC MOBILE BUILDING

support Epiroc's core mission of driving innovation in the mining industry for the benefit of customers and the environment, as Epiroc aims to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by half from its operations, transportation and the use of products by 2030.

HVO100 compatible Epiroc has also announced its surface drill rigs are now verified to be compatible with HVO100 fuel. HVO100 leads to a substantial reduction of particulates, reducing the impact on the environment. The possibility to use HVO100 fuel is applicable to Epiroc’s SmartROC, FlexiROC,

PowerROC, Christensen, Explorac and Boyles product families. “Epiroc has ambitious sustainability targets for 2030, and we continuously strive to improve our offering by finding more sustainable solutions. The ability to use HVO100 in our surface drill rigs is an important step towards meeting these targets,” said Martin Johansson, Global Product Portfolio Manager, Epiroc Surface division. HVO100 is a hydrotreated vegetable oil that reduces greenhouse gas emissions from diesel engines. It can be used both as an alternative fuel to diesel or mixed with diesel. A diesel engine run-

ning on HVO100 produces up to 90 per cent less harmful emissions, when compared with one running on fossil-based diesel fuel. HVO100 should be treated as diesel fuel, and it works the same way when it comes to service and installation. The current infrastructure for distribution is also like diesel, which makes the move to HVO100 a smoother process compared to alternative technical solutions. Customers can start to use HVO100 in their rigs straight away. Technical data varies between models and engines. Epiroc will update all the manuals accordingly to clarify the exact impact.

Mineral exploration faces labour crunch A disconnect between post-secondary education and careers in mining is expected to generate labour shortages, according to a new report. Th e Mi n i ng In d u st r y Human Resources Council (MiHR) and the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) partnered to produce the 2023 Canadian Mineral Exploration HR Outlook, which enhances labour market information available to mineral exploration stakeholders and serves as the basis for developing an industry strategy and action plan to address key human resources issues. As well, the report evaluates labour supply and demand factors in mineral exploration and identifies short- and long-term workforce challenges and opportunities facing various groups in the mineral exploration sector. “Our nation requires an inclusive, skilled workforce for a competitive mineral exploration sector,” said Ryan Montpellier, Executive Director of MiHR. “Canada’s minerals and metals play an essential role in the energy transition, yet a lack of youth

awareness and interest in mining, coupled with decreasing enrolment trends for undergraduate degrees like geosciences — decreasing by approximately 42 per cent from 2014 to 2020, or 4,800 to only 2,800 enrolments, are likely to lead to tight labour markets and labour shortages due to the dwindling number of students entering this profession." To address the labour gap, MiHR and PDAC examined the latest, most relevant statistics describing the exploration sector. Additionally, they developed and deployed the 2023 Canadian Mineral Exploration Survey, highlighting stakeholders’ perspectives on mineral exploration careers. The study reveals several main themes related to mineral exploration, such as labour demand trends being disconnected from post-secondary education in many key occupations for mineral exploration. Dwindling or stagnating enrolment trends can also create difficult labour market conditions and skills shortages. This is concerning as mining and mineral exploration are poised to expand in the coming decades.

The Outlook also shares that among career seekers in mineral exploration, a majority (62 per cent) do not have any exposure to the sector until post-secondar y studies or after graduating. This limits the reach of recruiters and educators within the industry, underscoring the need for an outreach strategy to students throughout grade school. Notably, there is also generally a higher representation of women and immigrants in exploration-related occupations than in the broader mining industry. “Attracting the next generation of educated and highly skilled workers is crucial for Canada to uphold its position as a world leader in mineral exploration and development," said Lisa McDonald, Executive Director of PDAC. "The Outlook offers precise, comprehensive information that is vital for industry stakeholders to understand the labour challenges at hand. These insights will inform PDAC's work supporting the industry to develop an inclusive, diverse and skilled workforce."

SMS Equipment delivers a massive electric excavator to BC mine A new 800-tonne Komatsu PC8000-11 is joining Hudbay Minerals’ fleet of electric equipment as part of a carbon-cutting initiative. Recently, officials from SMS Equipment, Komatsu Germany and Hudbay Minerals gathered at the Copper Mountain mine in Princeton, British Columbia, to celebrate the arrival of the sizable new machine that joins the operation’s growing electric fleet. At 9.7 metres tall and 10

metres wide, the PC8000-11 is the largest surface mining excavator on the market. With an impressive list of technical specifications, the mining excavator delivers more than a hefty payload as it will operate solely on electricity, contributing to the operation’s emissions-reduction strategy. “Embracing a sustainable future through electrification is an important step in our collective journey to decarbonization,” said Dennis

Chmielewski, Executive Vice President, Mining at SMS Equipment. “We are a proud equipment, service and technology solutions partner to Hudbay and a long-time supporter of the Copper Mountain mine trolley-assist project. The addition of a large-capacity excavator to the mine’s electric infrastructure marks exciting progress on its path to net-zero.” The Copper Mountain mine is one of the only open

pit mines in North America to operate an electric trolley-assist haulage system. The 1 km haul ramp and seven pantograph-equipped electric haul trucks that comprise the project were commissioned in the spring of 2022, in partnership with SMS Equipment, Komatsu, ABB, Clean BC and B.C. Hydro. The latest PC8000 joins two other electric excavators operating at the site that complement the mine’s overall electric fleet. “Electric equipment and

infrastructure significantly reduce our reliance on diesel, the largest source of GHG emissions at the mine,” said Walt Halipchuk, Director of Sustainability and Assets at Hudbay Minerals. “With the help of this technology, we are on track to reduce our emissions in 2024 by 6,000 tonnes of CO2e.” The nearly 800-metric-ton Komatsu shovel was made in Germany and assembled at Copper Mountain mine in 2023. Komatsu officials,

including the president and managing director of Komatsu Germany, were on-site for a handover ceremony for Hudbay employees and SMS representatives. “The journey to net-zero is not one we can navigate alone,” Halipchuk said. “With the help of value-added partners like SMS Equipment and Komatsu, we can explore our challenges and find sustainable solutions without sacrificing productivity, efficiency or profitability.”

site coordinators, enabling more consistent operations for both staffed and autonomous machines. “We are building on our

foundation of industry-leading autonomous solutions for surface operations, along with our deep experience in underground technology, to

provide significant improvement in both productivity and safety for underground mining customers,” Johnson said.

Caterpillar demonstrates its first battery electric underground mining truck Caterpillar has successfully demonstrated its first battery electric prototype underground mining truck, growing its portfolio of battery electric and semi-autonomous technology for underground mining. Cat hosted the electric mining truck demonstration for Newmont Corporation and other mining industry leaders, at its proving ground in Tasmania, Australia. The successful demo comes on the heels of the 793 battery electric prototype surface mining truck, which was unveiled in November of 2022. Caterpillar developed its first battery electric prototype underground mining truck with customer input and support from Newmont Corporation. The companies are collaborating to achieve Newmont’s vision of a fully connected, automated, zero carbon emitting, end-to-end mining system. “This milestone is a reflection of the partnership between our teams at Newmont and Caterpillar, showcasing the impact of strong collaboration in the mining industry,” said Rob Atkinson, Executive Vice President at Newmont.

“Achieving this milestone together, combining capabilities and shared values, is a testament to the strength of our strategic alliance.” The battery electric truck will complete Caterpillar’s first fully electric underg ro u n d l o a d a n d h a u l solution when paired with the commercially available R1700 XE battery electric loader. “This is a milestone for the entire Caterpillar team as we work closer than ever with Newmont to provide more sustainable choices for the underground mining industry,” said Denise John-

son, Caterpillar’s Resource Industries Group President. Caterpillar also demonstrated its growing autonomy and automation capabilities. This technology addresses some of the key safety challenges faced by underground mining customers, like the risk of collision when moving heavy machinery through dark, cramped spaces. Autonomous trucks can help to enhance mine site safety by removing operators from potentially hazardous or remote sites. As well, these features can improve productivity by creating increased visibility for mine

given at Bomag, and said he owes much of his success to the contributions of the many Bomag team members, dealers and customers. “Bomag is an incredible company who treats employees well. From sales to service, we have an incredible team of dedicated individuals, and they are a primary reason I stayed with the company,” Church said. “I want to thank the many Dan Church friends I have at SMS Equipment and especially the ada I’ve worked with over the relationships, ones that I will customers throughout Can- years.
