Construction of Highway 413 is a win-win for everyone
Ontario is turning promises into pavement.
The province recently awarded the rst contracts to begin construction of Highway 413.
When complete, the 52-km-long highway will connect Vaughan to Oakville via York, Peel and Halton regions. For commuters in the GTA, the 413 will save up to 30 minutes per trip and deliver relief to the 401 — one of the busiest transportation corridors in North America.
Congestion costs Ontario an estimated $56 billion every year. That’s billions lost in wasted fuel and lost productivity.
“Highway 413 is at the centre of our plan to get drivers in the GTA and across Ontario out of gridlock, and we’re getting it done,” said Premier Doug Ford. “In the face of U.S. tariffs and economic uncertainty, we’re
awarding critical construction contracts faster so we can get shovels in the ground on major infrastructure projects.”
While shaving up to an hour o the daily commute to work is an obvious bene t, building Highway 413 is also great news for roadbuilders and aggregate producers.
Construction of the new highway is expected to create more than 6,000 jobs annually and contribute more than $1 billion to Ontario’s GDP each year.
" e start of Highway 413 construction shows that Ontario is serious about building for the future. For our members, any project that drives new demand for stone, sand and gravel is a lifeline and it’s encouraging to have a premier and government focused each day on turning economic growth plans into real results," said
Michael McSweeney, Executive Director of the Ontario Stone, Sand and Gravel Association.
Critics argue Ontario doesn’t need another highway and the 413 comes with environmental consequences. But the reality is clear: our population is growing, communities are expanding and our existing highways are already beyond their limits.
There are also environmental benefits when the project is complete. e new highway creates a shortcut for people and goods moving through southern Ontario with a destination outside of Toronto. is means cars and trucks will consume less fuel. Considering the 401 corridor in the GTA can move as many as 500,000 cars daily, reducing idling in bumper-to-bumper tra c has the potential to seriously
reduce GHG emissions. As well, 413 includes a public transit corridor to help reduce the number of cars on the road. For a region that is projected to grow by millions of people in the coming decades, Highway 413 is not a luxury — it’s a necessity. And the Ford government deserves credit for moving quickly to get shovels in the ground.
Cat to launch 140 LVR grader in early 2026
Caterpillar is upgrading its 140 LVR motor grader to its next generation platform.
e new model, designed to deliver next gen e ciency, productivity and operator comfort, will launch in early 2026.
Weighing 19-tonnes, the next gen 140 LVR motor grader is equipped with a Cat C7.1 248-hp Tier 4 Final engine and a 4.2 metre blade.
“Versatility in operation has always been Caterpillar’s strength, and the 140 motor grader has been a classic demonstration of that virtue,” said Pablo dos Santos, Global
Product Application Specialist for Caterpillar. “Over the years, customers have shown that the 140’s usefulness and exibility have few limits.”
e grader’s frame lends itself to easy transportation, and the machine has been used in everything from snow clearance to grading operations, as well as its everyday use in roadbuilding and ditching.
Dos Santos explained the machine’s versatility, which has made it popular with rental eets, as well as government and municipal contracts, will be enhanced
by moving to the next generation platform.
“It’s exciting to see Caterpillar’s most popular motor grader model joining the Cat 120 Motor Grader receiving next generation treatment. We expect it will only add to the machine’s popularity,” dos Santos said.
A better view
Safety and e ciency rely on good visibility, so the Cat 140 Motor Grader features the successful cab design from the 120 next gen models.
Larger windows provide improved visibility out of the
cab, ensuring better all-round views, including moldboard and tires, while a standard rearview camera augments direct lines of sight.
The camera feed is integrated into the 25-cm touchscreen, which also provides operator access to other next generation functions, such as Cat Grade.
A new seat takes advantage of the next gen cab’s foot space and hip room, o ering a variety of adjustments to improve operator comfort and help reduce fatigue. e cab also features new seatbelt and safety harness options.
Lower operating costs
The new Cat 140 lowers operating costs and improves fuel e ciency. e 140 features banked and centralized access checkpoints that can help make daily maintenance a breeze rather than a bind.
The grader provides a sweet spot power-to-weight ratio with excellent fuel consumption rates.
“ ere is a lot of good information collected so far from the multiple machines being tested around the world, with more than 40,000 hours accumulated so far,” dos Santos said.
The new Cat 140 also offers expanded technology capabilities, from simple features to improve operator’s comfort, like the stable blade, to fully calibrated 3D systems to help reduce the total cost of ownership.
Caterpillar currently manufactures 13 motor grader models in facilities across the globe. Cat began manufacturing motor graders in 1931 with the No. 9 Cat Auto Patrol.
The first motor graders boasted lever and steering wheel controls and a 2.7metre moldboard.
Marcel Equipment opens new state-of-the-art
Marcel Equipment has moved into its new headquarters, which was purpose-built to boost productivity and capacity, as well as create a comfortable working environment for employees.
Founded in 1976, Marcel Equipment has grown from a local dealer to a global heavy equipment provider.
The new location in Southwold, Ontario, just outside of St. omas, enhances the company’s land ll compactor rebuilding and construction equipment reconditioning process.
Previously, Marcel Equipment worked out of six buildings. Now, all operations have been consolidated into a single facility.
As well, the new 39,000 squarefoot headquarters is located on 15
acres of land, a signi cant boost in space compared to the previous 3.5-acre site.
“Our shops were bottlenecked. We just didn't have space to add more tradespeople,” said Mark Frederick, Marcel Equipment’s General Manager. “ is space will allow for needed future growth.”
Designing the new facility required about two years of planning, followed by 18 months of construction. Marcel Equipment focused on creating a modern, state-of-the-art facility to boost productivity as well as employee comfort.
“You will be hard pressed to nd another heavy equipment facility like this anywhere in Ontario,” Frederick said. “A lot of thought and planning went into the design, process ow and out tting of the
work areas, as well as research to ensure we were equipping it with all the latest and greatest tooling.”
e new facility includes a parts warehouse, four welding bays, a drive-through 60 ft. x 25 ft. paint booth that’s large enough to accommodate a Cat 777 haul truck and a 992 wheel loader, a separate building for washing and sandblasting equipment, a dedicated enclosed bay to rebuild components and 11 heavy equipment bays.
“ e drive through bays are 120 feet deep. So, we can fit a lot of machines in each way,” Frederick said. “And we doubled the size of our welding shop to increase our productivity.”
The company’s crane capacity has also doubled and now includes two 10-ton cranes in the repair
shop, a 5-ton crane in the weld shop and a 2-ton crane in the component rebuild shop.
e facility is also equipped with hose reel systems to deliver uids, air and high-pressure water required by the mechanics.
To ensure employee comfort, the shops are also all air-conditioned and equipped with radiant floor heating for the colder months.
“I don't like working in 40-degree weather, and if I was a mechanic, I wouldn't want to work in 40 degrees either. It seems that the summers get hotter and more humid each year. We believed that it was important to make the investment now to go with full climate control for all shops,” Frederick said.
Alongside an advanced welding shop air ltration system, all shops
are also equipped with multiple Nox and Co2 sensors connected to an automatic air evacuation system.
“From a health and safety point of view, we've done a lot of improvements as well,” Frederick said.
Marcel Equipment also increased and modernized its o ce space.
e building includes a large lunchroom, high-tech boardroom and space to accommodate future growth.
“ is is a big investment for the company. We wanted to make sure that it was done right,” Frederick said.
“ at way we're set for the foreseeable future. It is our hope that our technicians and future recruits will appreciate these working conditions for what they are — the best in the business.”

Don’t store it yet! Must-do maintenance before the season ends
By Jonathan Gardner, Construction Equipment
Product Manager at Kubota Canada
As temperatures begin to drop and the days shorten, it's a clear signal the equipment storage season is near. is transitional period is an ideal opportunity to carry out thorough end-of-season maintenance on your equipment ensuring your fleet is primed and ready to perform when spring arrives.
Cleaning
Construction equipment faces constant exposure to harsh elements like dust, mud and debris – conditions that, if left unchecked, can accelerate wear and invite corrosion. Establishing a
seasonal cleaning routine that includes full debris removal and a comprehensive wash of both exterior surfaces and undercarriages is a key preventative step. ese maintenance practices not only preserve equipment integrity and enhance performance but also ensure your machines stay in top shape, whether stored away or operating through the winter months.
Maintenance
Effective fleet management means scheduling proactive maintenance in the slower seasons when possible. Proactive care in the off-season helps avoid unexpected downtime and costly repairs, keeping your machines operating at peak e ciency. ese measures
extend equipment lifecycle and directly in uence total cost of ownership, which are critical considerations for decision-makers tasked with managing budgets and optimizing utilization.
Consider completing the following tasks:
· A full mechanical inspection: Check critical components like belts, hydraulic hoses, bearings and brakes, paying special attention to worn items often overlooked during peak operations on aging equipment.
· Tires and tracks checks: Maintain correct inflation, prevent flat spots or track damage during storage by inspecting for cuts, punctures, wear and proper in ation.
• RENTALS • PARTS • SERVICE
· Scheduled service: It's important to follow the manufacturer's recommended maintenance schedule. Be sure to change engine and hydraulic oils, replace lters, inspect the air intake system and keep all grease points properly lubricated.
Storage
Proper storage techniques safeguard your equipment’s longevity through winter downtime. Ensure your equipment is ready for use as soon as the spring arrives by:
· Topping o the engine oil, hydraulic fluid, coolant and transmission fluid to appropriate levels and adding fresh fuel and stabilizer to the fuel tanks. Run the engine for at least
ve minutes to allow the stabilizer to enter the rest of the fuel system. If you’re planning on storing your equipment for a while, most stabilizers claim to keep fuel good for up to 24 months.
· Another option is to syphon the fuel out of the tank and run the machine until it’s dry. While this process takes time, it provides the comfort of adding fresh fuel come spring. However, if you plan on moving your machine at all, this wouldn’t be the best move.
Whenever possible, storing equipment indoors is preferable as this o ers protection from the elements and reduces the likelihood of animal interference.
However, if indoor space is limited, it's important to take proactive steps when storing your machinery outdoors. Use breathable covers to shield your equipment and conduct regular inspections for signs of animal activity or uid leaks. Placing drip trays or cardboard beneath equipment can help identify issues early and keep your eet in good condition throughout the o -season.
By completing these endof-season maintenance steps, equipment owners and managers effectively safeguard their investments. is strategic approach reduces lifecycle costs, boosts reliability and positions eets to perform e ciently and competitively when the next season begins.
DOWNTIME? NOT ON OUR WATCH.
Keep everything running exactly as it should with the right parts, consumables and preventative maintenance programs backed by our team of skilled technicians and equipment experts.

Mattracks launches new track systems for compact equipment
Mattracks has rolled out two new rubber track conversion systems for compact articulated machines.
The newly released RT60 and RT80 track systems are designed to provide tight-
er control, smoother ride quality and full functionality in places where standard tires can’t perform.
The two new models join the existing RT125 and RT250, giving Mattracks
four RT track systems. The new track systems fit most popular compact articulated models from Bobcat, Kubota, Avant and ASV.
“The RT60 and RT80 were specifically developed to fit
tighter wheel wells while maintaining full articulation and control,” said Richard Voeller, Engineer at Mattracks. “They’re built for machines that need to move in small spaces without giving up strength or stability.”
The RT60 and RT80 feature a shorter design and improved shape, giving articulated loaders and pivot-steer equipment better steering control and stronger traction.
This allows operators to make tighter turns, move smoothly over uneven terrain and perform tasks more easily, even indoors, on soft surfaces or in areas where ground protection is necessary.
“The tracks are closer together, which improves steering without sacrificing strength,” Voeller said. “These systems were made to handle pivot-steer and articulated vehicles with confidence.”
The RT60 and RT80 are equipped with a swivel-mounted lower frame and rubber isolation mounts, which help absorb shock and reduce vibration during operation. This setup improves comfort for the operator, improves stability and reduces wear on the machine. Both models use a smooth tread to minimize impact on finished surfaces and improve balance across changing terrain.
All RT models include Mattracks’ exclusive rubber torsion system, allowing the tracks to move naturally with the ground. This increases traction, protects the machine and cuts down on bounce, especially when navigating uneven or unpredictable surfaces.
“It’s all about better con -
tact with the surface and reduced impact on both machine and operator,” Voeller said. “Whether in a building or on muddy terrain, these systems provide reliable traction and a smoother ride.”
The RT60 and RT80 are ideal for compact equipment like screeds, trenchers and small loaders. Each system can be installed easily, helping crews adapt quickly without downtime. All models are tested in extreme environments.
“These weren’t just created to match,” Voeller said. “They were built to meet very real customer needs. We listened to dealers and operators who wanted less vehicle modification, better steering and strong performance in tight spaces and we delivered.”

That hands-on experience sparked my passion for interlocking, design and build. I’ve always had a creative mindset and a love for building, and I’ve never looked back. When it came time to invest in equipment, I started by renting another brand, but once I tried a Bobcat® machine, I knew nothing else compared to it. The Bobcat MT100 mini track loader was a total game-changer. The power, versatility, and reliability were instantly noticeable. We bought one, and then quickly added a second. Now we can run two job sites at once, increasing our efficiency and capacity.
Our machines are essential, compact enough to fit through backyard gates, powerful enough to rip out 2,000 lb stumps, and easy to haul. With the right attachments, auger, forks, and bucket, they handle everything from excavation to material transport. We’re even looking at Bobcat snowblower/blade attachments to expand into winter work.
