SO CAL MINI HORSE SANCTUARY, LITTLE HORSES & BIG DREAMS

So Cal Mini Horse Sanctuary is a place for dreamers, a place for those who believe in helping, a place for new life. Each day at the Sanctuary is different and exciting, but there is also a predictability to our routine. The morning sounds of nickering horses as we begin feeding, the echoes of tiny hoof beats as our happy, healthy, rescued miniature horses run around their pastures, excited for breakfast. The calling from the horses as they are walked for training, grooming and exercise by volunteers. During these lively and happy times, it is remarkable to remember that these mini horses have made tremendous progress in our care. Our minis were once skinny and starved, abused, or worse – on their way to a merciless end; now they are loved.

So Cal Mini Horse Sanctuary began as a private family venture a decade ago by Jeanne Oliver and her three boys! Jeanne was in a riding accident and although she no longer rides, her love for horses remained. She was introduced to minis and the sanctuary followed shortly after when she realized the extent of neglect and abuse these little horses endure. Miniature horses, although smaller than ponies and full-sized horses, require the same amount of care. Jeanne saw that minis are often given as presents to children, like Easter bunnies, minis are cute at first, then neglected, abused, or taken to auction and dumped for money.

In the span of ten years, we have gone from a tiny hobby rescue, funded solely by our founder, to the largest mini horse rescue in California, if not the world. We attended local auctions and when malnourished and abandoned minis were brought into the auction ring, we happily rescued them from questionable fates. Local auctions are often the first stop for many horses on their way to

darker and crueler places. Saving minis from these places is our biggest goal.

As a non-profit, we believe in the importance of the Sanctuary’s transparency and in having strong ethical and operational principles. We updated our polices, planned for the future, and in June of 2016 we became verified and later accredited by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries, the only Globally Recognized organization providing standards for identifying legitimate animal sanctuaries. Daryl Tropea, the GFAS Director of Accreditation – Equine, explained that “The So Cal Mini Horse Sanctuary clearly strives to adhere to best practices and has shown impressive accomplishments rescuing over 90 miniature horses during their first year of operations.” We are proud to be part of something bigger, something that encompasses the entire idea behind animal rescue and promotes animal welfare.

Through the ceaseless efforts of our founder, our rescue has blossomed into a beautiful sanctuary. The nickers and hoof beats are never ending at So Cal Mini Horse Sanctuary. You can expect to find minis munching on hay or napping in the sunshine. In the summertime we play in the water, splashing around with the hose, keeping the minis and volunteers cool and comfortable.

Through our efforts we have rescued upwards of 400 mini horses and have found safe and loving homes for more than 300 of them. These horses were

thrown away by the people that were supposed to care about them, they came to us afraid and unable to trust but overtime and with patience they learned to love again.

Our minis receive only the best; that means regular veterinary care, hoof trims and attention. As part of our rehabilitation and training efforts, we believe in taking our minis on adventures into the community. We know how important it is for the minis we rehome be well prepared for the world and all of its excitement. We regularly attend community functions in our area as well as pet adoption days and local equestrian events. Many of our minis have been in local holiday parades, and the 2017 and 2018 Rose Parades and have done their very best to bring attention to our cause.

Our passion for horses has gotten us this far, and will continue to carry us down a road of rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming. We can only hope that others who have an equine addiction as strong as ours will consider adopting one of our loving horses, sponsoring or donating to our efforts. Follow our amazing journey on Facebook and Instagram @ socalminihorsesanctuary, you may find a mini that is irresistibly photogenic and tugs at your heart!

A note from our founder: My name is Jeanne Oliver, I am the Founder/ President of So Cal Mini Horse Sanctuary. We are currently looking for a new location in the Southern or Central California area. GET BETTER SHOW RESULTS BY IMPROVING ENERGETIC CONNECTION

One thing I have learned as a competing horse person and musician, is that there are many parallels between them. The only major difference is that my violin is made of wood and a horse is a living being with similar issues to us humans. They have emotions, good and bad days, physical issues, anxiety and stress, and trusting their rider. As a result, the best way to get you both on the same page is to first break down the individual issues that need to be addressed before putting you both together as a unified, in sync, team. Then your performance can flow so much better and be more effective!

Horses Feel Your Energy — Even What You May Not Be Noticing About Yourself

As I have discussed before, we are all energetic beings— made of energy, responding to energy, and the habit of holding onto energy that is not ours. Horses are very sensitive to energies of all types. I am sure you have noticed this with your horse on any given day. They pick up and respond to those energies before we are even aware of them. This makes them super sensitive to everything you are feeling, repressing or not aware of, and experiencing in your body and life. They know when you are upset, not feeling well, anxious, and even what you are thinking about. It is amazing how much information they pick up.

As a result, for you both to be in sync in a competition, you have to be clear and be in the moment, focused yet relaxed, and able to feel what your horse is feeling all at the same time.

How does one get to that place so you can be the best team possible?

Let Go of Unfocused Energy

If you are competing, you already have a team helping you both— trainer, vet, chiropractor, and others in your support team. To make the most of all that support, and to have it align, consider energetic support as well. One of the best ways to help your horse do its best is to clean up your energy and residual energetic baggage so your horse does not have to carry it: you’ll avoid confusing them with all that unfocused energy. They have their own energetic issues to deal with, but they are wired to help you in whatever way they can. Your horse, and all animals in your life, are like big mirrors or reflections of you. They do this to help bring whatever is bothering you (conscious or unconscious) to your awareness so that you can change that emotional or physical expression in yourself, which is what’s needed to ultimately allow your horse to let it go, too.

I remember many years ago riding a jumping lesson, and my horse was totally not himself. He was acting out a bit and being a bit difficult. It was not my best lesson to say the least. I was frustrated

and a bit short tempered, but I wasn’t fully cognizant of that. It wasn’t until I got home later that I realized he had been picking up on some emotions I was not aware of yet, namely anger, impatience and insecurity. He knew before I did, and he was trying to release them with his behavior. That really helped me to realize how open and honest with myself I had to be with my emotions. Needless to say, my next ride was much better as I was more aware of my emotional state.

The Role of Mindset in Balancing Performance Energy

Another key component to becoming a successful competitor is your mindset. You may have heard this from your trainer, but the piece that is often forgotten is that your unconsious mindset is usually full of old limiting and self-sabotaging beliefs. Until they are released or neutralized, they will continue to run, undermining any effort to change them. This is a part of the energetic component that can be addressed in both you and your horse. They too can have beliefs that get in their way. How many of you feel you are not

good enough, never win, always forget your test or course, there was the time you fell off, etc. These are just a few the beliefs and patterns we hold from our past experiences that can be shifted and released. It gives you a clean slate and the ability to do anything!

One of my favorite programs for energizing and aligning you and your horse is my Performance and Mindset Program. I focus on one or two sessions with you the rider to help with any old beliefs, patterns, fears, old memories that may be getting in the way of being your best when you ride into the show ring. Then we do a session on the horse to clear out any old memories, trauma, or beliefs they may be carrying. The last session is on both of you as a team to bring you together in sync emotionally and physically. It clears the energetic deck so you can focus on being the best team possible and capitalizing on all that you have trained for. It can be fun and easy without all the extra baggage.

One of my Dressage clients put it this way. “We were headed to Region 2 Championships, with a show the week

COLIC SURGERY: THEN AND NOW

need for surgery.

Successful colic surgery is now a routine part of treatment in today’s world of modern veterinary medicine, however, this wasn’t always the case. It was not all that long ago that horses going through colic surgery had a zero percent chance of survival. However hard to imagine, prior to the 1960’s, very little was known about colic and its treatment. Before 1968, most colics received typical laxatives such as mineral oil and magnesium sulfate with repeated stomach tubing; surgery was never considered a viable option. In 1968 the team at UC Davis operated on 26 colic cases going 0 for 25 before finally getting a survivor in #26!

In the 1970’s significant advancements were made in the diagnosis and treatment of colic as information from research labs was brought into routine clinical practice. From that first survivor at UC Davis almost a half a century ago, diagnosis, medical treatment and the surgical approach to colic have evolved significantly with many discoveries molding our modern approach to this complex and deadly condition.

This article will discuss the critical break-throughs, including advances in anesthesia, pharmaceuticals, nutrition, intensive care, and overall understanding by veterinarians and horse owners.

Starting with a zero chance of survival meant that surgery outcomes could only get better. Veterinarians at UC Davis began testing new techniques, tools, and procedures hoping to improve the clinical outcome for colic surgery.

General Anesthesia

Huge improvements were made in general anesthesia under the guidance of Dr. Eugene Steffey. Anesthesia used to be fairly primitive, using dangerous injectables paired with casting ropes to immobilize a 1200 pound patient. With the advent of inhalable anesthetics such as halothane, general anesthesia improved markedly. Safety for the veterinarians and horses alike improved greatly due to the ability to provide much needed oxygen and intravenous fluids to compromised patients while under inhalable anesthetic gases. To compliment the gas anesthesia, mechanical ventilation and blood

Race Against Time

Even with improved anesthesia and surgical techniques, survival rates were still disappointing because horses were still getting referred to surgery too late. Veterinarians and clients alike began to be educated on the advantage of early referral and placing horses “on the table” in an expedient fashion. Survival rates soon went from 25% to 85%. Some of this improvement was a better understanding of physiology, but the major component was getting surgery done earlier in the disease process.

We can’t discuss the timelines of referral without talking about Banamine (Flunixin Meglumine). Banamine is an example of an important tool used in the treatment of colic that also has a flip side. While reversing the effects of endotoxemia and alleviating pain, it unfortunately can also mask symptoms and hide the need for surgery. With better understanding of the use of this powerful drug, veterinarians have learned to adjust their evaluations of a colic horse post Banamine injection and monitor the patient for signs indicating a

Colon Resection/Bowel Resection

In years past, horses with colon torsions or strangulating small intestines had poor survival rates due to the toxic effects of the compromised or dead bowel. As techniques of removing poorly perfused bowel has improved, survival rates for these “twisted” horses has also improved. In certain situations, surgeons will remove a section of the twisted colon to decrease the chances of the torsion re-occurring in the future. Along with improved surgical techniques, adjuvant therapies with medications to fight endotoxin and laminitis have further improved survival rates.

The Post-Op Diarrhea

Now that more and more horses were surviving surgery, attention turned to improving post-operative care. One of the primary threats to the post-operative colic was diarrhea, caused by the use of prophylactic antibiotics, the stress of not eating, and clostridial toxins. However, the use of these antibiotics has the propensity to disrupt the gut’s natural flora contrasting the positive effects of preventing infection.

16  EQUINE AND CANINE NEWS

This led to the introduction of intestinal protectants, the most well know being Biosponge. Biosponge attracts bacterial toxins inside the intestinal tract and absorbs them before they can devastate the horse’s circulatory system. Whether used prophylactically or therapeutically, Biosponge usage, along with a decreased reliance on antibiotics, has made post-op diarrhea an uncommon occurrence.

In the early years of colic surgery, horses that had undergone surgery were fasted. Post-op diarrhea rates were high constantly threatening the horse’s chances for a successful outcome. As veterinarians began to question this fasting, horses were being offered food sooner and sooner post-operatively. Today, horses are offered oral feed as soon as 12-24 hours post-surgery, providing much needed calories and protein and helping maintain a normal gut flora. Certain companies, such as Platinum Performance (Enteral Immunonutrition Formula), have

supplements containing finely ground micro nutrients and probiotics essential for the compromised intestinal tract.

Influence of Diet and Nutrition

Many veterinarians are convinced that colic can be prevented and that it is heavily influenced by diet. Dr. Nat White (Director at Virginia Tech’s Marion duPont Scott Equine Medical Center) has looked at how the role of high grain, and even bran, can lead to an increased incidence of colic. Horses’ intestinal tracts are designed to be on “pasture” 24 hours a day, with constant grazing. As natural grazers, modern feeding practices of 2-3 meals a day with grains and concentrates easily shifts the intestinal microbes, setting the stage for a malfunction. For those horses where constant grazing is unrealistic, feeding moderate amounts of grain with high quality forage and proper supplementation is the best way to decrease the risk of colic.

Nutritional supplementation has proven to be a valuable adjuvant to a low grain, healthy fat diet. Omega-3 fatty acids can directly diminish bowel inflammation. By adding omega-3s, antioxidants, and micronutrient supplementation to the diet, the horses’ body is given what hay alone cannot provide.

The Future

With the progress made in identifying risk factors, prevention, early referral and surgical techniques in colic over the last 50 years, it’s not hard to imagine the future holding great promise. Much of the current research is in the area of diet, nutrition, bowel inflammation and the equine microbiome. Thinking of the strides made, going from 0-90% success rate in colic surgery survival, the future is bright for our equine friends. FREE VOCATIONAL HORSEMANSHIP EDUCATION FOR AMERICAN VETERANS

Veterans on California’s central coast have welcomed a new non-profit vocational training initiative that is working to decrease rates of homelessness in the population. Elite Vocations, based in Nipomo, SLO county, provides a ten-week certified horsemanship training program for American Veterans to equip them with the necessary tools and certification they need to enter the equine industry as professional grooms and assistant trainers (where prior experience allows). The program is provided at no cost to qualifying Veterans on California’s central coast, with plans to expand out further in due course.

With the ongoing housing crisis facing California’s Veterans, Elite Vocation’s mission is to provide employable skills in an industry which commonly provides housing benefits. Additionally, working regularly with horses provides therapeutic benefit – enabling the Veterans in the program to reconnect with themselves and others, reignite their sense of purpose, and improve selfefficacy. The program is provided fiscal sponsorship (Model B) by ECHO Group, Inc, a California Veteran-run 501(c) (3) founded in 2017 (EIN 36-4870618). “One of the reasons that I have chosen to do work/study programs at horse ranches is because housing is usually available,” said one Veteran participant. “The jobs also provide a community of hard-working people that most Veterans are seeking. We miss being on a team. Ranch work provides for that team atmosphere and shared common goals.”

The Elite Vocations curriculum is based, under license, on the internationallyrecognized Groom Elite horsemanship education program which has been training grooms at racetracks, breeding facilities, community colleges, and correctional facilities since 2001. “While the Groom Elite training will prepare

Veteran participants to enter a career working in the racing and commercial breeding industries (and other intensive fields), our focus area of employment will be with individual horse owners, boarding stables and show barns, smaller breeding operations, and similar equestrian businesses on California’s central coast that embrace the natural horsemanship approach and would love to offer a qualified Veteran a live-in position on their ranch,” said program co-founder Simon d’Unienville.

With this focus in mind, the Elite Vocations program combines the Groom Elite program with additional natural horsemanship training techniques to further enhance participants’ skills and knowledge, enabling them to take on assistant training roles in certain fields.

“In the five years that I’ve been facilitating equine-assisted therapy/learning programs for American Veterans I’ve seen how drastically even a few days spent working with horses can positively impact them – mentally, emotionally, spiritually, and even physically,” said d’Unienville.

“Many Veterans I’ve worked with in the therapy programs have expressed a desire to get involved with horses on a more regular basis and showed a lot of talent working with horses, but I was unable to recommend them for [volunteer or paid]

positions without knowing they had completed further training. When I was approached by the ECHO Group to start a non-profit horsemanship program for Veterans, I immediately knew I wanted to start a vocational training program to bridge the gap between Veterans who show the talent and desire to work in the equine industry, and their prospective employers who would be happy to take them on if they knew the Veteran was safe and confident around horses, understands the basics of feeding, handling and care, and knows when to ask for help,” he added.

The Elite Vocations program is currently working with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to be registered as a vocational trade school to allow Veterans who qualify for the “Veteran Readiness and Employment” benefit to have their education paid for by the V.A. In the interim, the program is funded by private donors who see the benefit in providing employable skills (with mental and physical health benefits) to Veterans with service-connected disabilities.

The ground-based training program

utilizes retired racehorses that have ended their racing career due to injury or lack of performance. In addition to providing training for the Veterans, the Elite Vocations program provides re-training for these horses, all of which are adopted out to suitable homes (through Win Place Home, a 501(c)(3) Thoroughbred rehabilitation and rehoming non-profit) at the end of each three-month program. “The use of these horses in the program gives them a second chance at a career, and we see many parallels between these horses and the Veterans we work with,” said d’Unienville.

Learn more about the Elite Vocations program at www.elitevocations.org. Please consider Helping our Heroes Heal through Horsemanship with a tax-deductible donation. You can lend these Veterans, and the retired racehorses in the program, a helping hand with a donation of $10 or more. Text HORSE to 53555 to donate today.

FEELING THE LOVE… FOR ARABIAN HORSES

advice, assistance, and educational content supporting the Arabian Horse community, along with ‘how to’ options to assist others via simple steps to develop the same within their own communities.

Who is behind WLAH?

How did We LOVE Arabian Horses get started?

We LOVE Arabian Horses was launched in 2017. The brand was designed to be simple and easy to grasp, while the focus needed both visual appeal and a compelling message, while delivering innovative promotional outreach for the Arabian horse.

Our message is simple – education and outreach that’s designed to build the Arabian horse community. After spending many years in the business, involved with (and observing), it was apparent that a systemic approach to marketing was needed, and one that’s consistent with what works well in marketing today.

That includes: advanced technology, online platforms, database technology, easy options to get involved and learn, and for newcomers to thrive in a business that has many facets. Even for the tried and true, it’s not easy to grasp all the facets.

What were the first aspects of We LOVE Arabian Horses?

After the initial branding was developed, our first foray was our Facebook page called We LOVE Arabian Horses. Our interactive web design soon followed, along with the development of multiple assets to benefit the community.

Carol Nierenberg (Silver Box Studios) listened to me sharing about the vision and, while she listened attentively during early planning discussions, she was the first to notice… our business structure was very similar to many “third-party” marketing organizations, like the Milk Board, Beef Council and Pork Producers here in the USA. There are many similar organizations in many countries.

In doing so, we provide resources, assets,

As the founder and volunteer Executive Director, it’s my role to lead the growth of We LOVE Arabian Horses while navigating a long-term growth plan for simple outreach platforms. Our true potential is determined by people power!

As an example, we have well over 100+ people participating in a variety of 25+ outreach platforms. We have over 50 very astute leaders and advocates who are part of our Ambassador Advisors, along with another 50 or so individuals (or businesses) who have already become sponsors in one form or another. We also have multiple corporate partners already engaged and supporting growth.

We LOVE Arabian Horses provides a congenial “Switzerland” that assists those who may have the same needs, while assisting their community’s growth goals. We nurture an open environment via ideas, dialogue, and much collaboration, where individuals and groups can freely share their questions and hurdles with the broader community, to then create a smarter plan for others to resource and replicate in their area and/or for their farm or business.

Please give us an example. In a short amount of time we’ve consulted with a number of farms, clubs and groups who have requested our feedback. We assist them with direct observations, suggestions, ideas and resources to help them reach their outreach goals. This often includes even simple steps needed to ‘move the needle.’

Working with like-minded partners, we’re building a structure to assist multiple events with local clubs, national events, and everything in between.

What are your long-term goals with WLAH?

To design and build a vibrant international platform for Arabian breed promotion, via an organization

that’s built to support the entire Arabian horse community with robust platforms created, tested and scaled for efficient long-term growth.

How do you think WLAH is making a difference?

The proof is already with us. In the last year alone, we’ve increased from about 50 email transactions per week, to now fulfilling up to 500 to 1000 email transactions per week. Many of these come direct from our website, as users are drawn by content they engaged online via We LOVE Arabian Horses email and social media.

Conservatively, that’s 25,000+ interactions annually already. These interactions range from requests for assistance with concepts and ideas, ordering assets for events like stickers, wristbands, banners, and other promotional stuff, along with fulfillment of contest applicants, editorial requests, article contributions, our blogs, image galleries, videos and even podcast guest suggestions. It’s systemic.

What are a few examples of your current platforms?

• Ambassador Contest – Contestants do outreach events from a set list of options to win points and prizes in an ongoing annual contest.

• Markel Global Podcast – Weekly series featuring well-known industry experts, chatting on a variety of topics benefitting Arabian horse education.

• Community Cookbook – Our first published book, the Arabian Horse Community Cookbook is a collection of 225+ recipes from friendly kitchens.

• Educational Articles – We host over a dozen article contributors, those who write about history, breeders, and key industry leaders.

• Farm Support & Events – We assist farms with outreach plans and either help plan and/or attend their events.

• Local Club & Group Assets – We work with clubs and groups to provide a portfolio of outreach assets focused on connecting the community.

That’s a sample of what’s working already! And each was first developed and then tweaked (as needed) to adjust for success, efficiency and flexibility.

What are the bigger projects currently being considered?

We’re working with two Arabian horsecentered feature films that will be similar to Cass Olé and The Black Stallion, along with formats for multiple Arabian horse fair or festival concepts. We’re also building multiple relationships with main-stream partners like Western Horseman, Equus, Road to the Horse and Cowboys & Indians, to name a few. We’ll do more as we grow.

How can people get involved and help support WLAH?

We’re pleased to hear from Arabian horse lovers who want to assist, at home or in person, as well as those who may be interested in possibly sponsoring activities or assisting to build more opportunities via outreach.

We’d love for anyone to visit our website – look for this info under Actions, Jobs, Sponsors or Partners on the top nav bar of our website.

FIELDS OF LOVE: FROM THE HEART ANIMAL SANCTUARY

Each field has a six foot fence.

They are allowed to be themselves. Digging holes, dipping in their “swim pool”, wrestle and run and rest. They are safe.

Between the fences of ten scenic and tranquil acres in the hills of Paso Robles, on the Central Coast, over forty animals call From the Heart Animal Sanctuary their forever home. These animals can rest assured that they are safe from human involvement leading to insecurity, abuse and neglect.

They will not be adopted back out. They are home.

Our sanctuary is made up of every species of livestock (except pigs and fowl), cats and dogs. We have fourteen Siberian Huskies.

Serious overbreeding because they are such beautiful animals has led to overpopulation of unwanted Huskies. Most individuals neglect to really investigate the needs and challenges of owning a Husky.

SLO Animal Shelter, as well as other shelters, and rescues are trying their best to place Huskies as they are relinquished, found wandering the streets and never claimed, or any other circumstance that the dog has encountered.

From The Heart Animal Sanctuary has adopted six huskies from SLO Animal Shelter, as well as a Senior Heeler, three huskies were owner relinquish, two huskies we adopted from Animal Compassion Team in Fresno and two huskies came from Arizona where they were deemed un-adoptable.

We have three fields filled with huskies.

Joe has a special love and knowledge of these arctic dogs and his passion is evident in his care of them. Our animals serve as the content for his art classes at the Paso Robles Youth Art Center. He teaches young artists ranging from five years old to fourteen years old. These drawing and painting classes nurture an understanding and appreciation for the animals. The students learn the anatomy and physiology from which they translate into drawing and painting.

Leslie lends her talents and knowledge to the livestock at the Sanctuary.

As well as the rescued Huskies, we have a cow, a Belgian Mule, a Belgian Mare, three mini donkeys, one mini pony, four horses, twelve goats, three sheep, an alpaca and cats!

Each and every animal has a story. We love to share their backgrounds when folks come to visit us! We take people on a “tour” by appointment, for a donation to the Sanctuary.

Because we are a Sanctuary we depend on the kind and generous donations from individuals as well as grants we apply for. We are always in active fund raising mode!

October 14, 2023 from Noon to three pm, we will have our second annual fundraiser at 580 Linne Road, Paso Robles ( The Iron Jungle Parking Lot)

Last year we had a wonderful turnout and we were amazed at the generosity of our neighbors and friends!

“Art & Animals” will be the theme of our three hour event. Joe will teach kids and adults alike some drawing skills with actual hands on activities! We will have a live animal be the subject!

Yabba Dabba Dogs will be our food truck for the event ! Pacific Wildlife Center

will be bringing one of their rehabilitated animals for a presentation.

Live music by Tim Francis, Hoofprints from Arroyo Grande will bring their amazing animals. In the DogHouse Forge will be blacksmithing, we will have roping instruction, a silent auction, face painting, pony appearances and much more!

The cost will be ten dollars at the door or an in kind donation! This will be a Family Event. We ask that no dogs or other pets come to the event due to our

animal guests! Yabba Dabba Dogs is reasonably priced for a yummy lunch! We hope that guests will enjoy an hour or two or three with us and support the graciousness of Yabba Dabba Dogs! No outside food or drink will be allowed.

Gate opens at noon, one o clock will be our wildlife presentation, joe will teach at two, Tim will play throughout the day. Hoofprints, roping instruction, blacksmithing are all included in the entry fee. Face painting will be extra at five dollars. We have awesome face painters!

REAL ESTATE IS STILL CONSIDERED THE BEST LONG-TERM INVESTMENT

with everything happening today, Americans recognize owning a home is a powerful financial decision.

Why Do Americans Still Feel So Positive About the Value of Investing in a Home?

With all the headlines circulating about home prices and rising mortgage rates, you may wonder if it still makes sense to invest in homeownership right now. A recent poll from Gallup shows the answer is YES! In fact, real estate was voted the best long-term investment for the 11th consecutive year, consistently beating other investment types like gold, stocks, and bonds (see graph below):

If you’re thinking about purchasing a home, let this poll reassure you. Even

Purchasing real estate has typically been a solid long-term strategy for building wealth in America. As Lawrence Yun, Chief Economist at the National Association of Realtors (NAR), notes:

“. . . homeownership is a catalyst for building wealth for people from all walks of life. A monthly mortgage payment is often considered a forced savings account that helps homeowners build a net worth about 40 times higher than that of a renter.”

That’s because owning a home grows your net worth over time as your home appreciates in value and as you pay

down your mortgage. And, since building that wealth takes time, it may make sense to start as soon as you can. If you wait to buy and keep renting, you’ll miss out on those monthly housing payments going toward your home equity.

Bottom Line

Buying a home is a powerful decision. So, it’s no wonder so many people view real estate as the best long-term investment. If you’re ready

to start on your own journey toward homeownership, let’s connect today!

IT’S RODEO TIME

The 27th Ever Creston Classic Rodeo is just around the corner! This year’s rodeo will be held September 14-17, 2023 at the rodeo grounds in historic downtown Creston. The rodeo weekend kicks off on Thursday evening, September 14th at 5:30pm with the always exciting Jackpot Barrel Racing. On Friday evening, September 15th there is Team Roping and Ladies Breakaway, also beginning at 5:30pm. The actual rodeo performance begins on Saturday, September 16th with the Grand Entry at 4:30pm, followed by the fast and furious Hide Race, and events such as Kid’s Dummy Roping, Men’s Double Mugging, Sort and Brand, Ladies Ribbon Dogging, and Team Sorting. On Sunday, September 17th, the day begins with Cowboy Church at 8:30am, held in the rodeo grounds grandstand, followed by the extremely popular Mutton Bustin at 10am! Come watch 40+ kids try their hand at riding sheep in hopes of qualifying for the finals held during the afternoon performance, beginning at 12:30pm. You won’t go hungry as there will be food vendors selling everything from Tri Tip sandwiches to Mexican Food and Snowcones! Also present are numerous vendors selling their crafts and a kids area featuring a bounce house. Admittance to the rodeo is only $10.00 for adults and kids over 12. Active members of the armed services and kids

under 12 get in free! The Creston Classic Rodeo is GREAT fun for the entire family. We look forward to seeing you at this year’s 27Th Ever Creston Classic Rodeo.

On another note, the Creston Classic Rodeo is a 501(c) (3) organization. Our sole purpose is to fund the charitable needs of the community of Creston. Without our dedicated rodeo sponsors, whom receive banner space in the arena, VIP passes, and extensive social

media coverage on our website and Facebook page for their sponsorship, the rodeo would not continue! If you are interested in partnering up with the rodeo and becoming a sponsor please go to www.crestonclassicrodeo.org where you will find this year’s Sponsorship Form. If you are interested in being a Vendor at this year’s rodeo, the 2023 Vendor Application can be found on the website as well. Any questions regarding the rodeo can be directed to Mike Romelfanger at jnucko@gmail.com.

Equine Colic Relief

Be Prepared When Colic Strikes! Colic won’t wait and neither should you!

If you have lost a horse to Colic you know how hard it is to forget. Whether your horse is prone to colic or not, NO HORSE IS IMMUNE TO COLIC. Avoid hours of waiting for vet to arrive not to mention the expense. Colic is your horse's worst enemy, don't wait!

Last Saturday I called you regarding my horse showing signs of colic. Years ago my husband bought a bottle of Equine Colic Relief. I called you to see if I could still use it. I gave it to my horse “Chief” at 8 AM, he had minimal bowel sounds, was trying to roll on the ground several times, would not eat or drink. At 4:45 PM he urinated and moved his bowels with fairly good bowel sounds and the next day he had good bowel sounds and was given Bermuda hay. Thank you for making such a great product. It saved me hundreds of dollars in vet bills. I highly recommend this product and will let my equine friends know about it.. — Joan B, Tucson AZ

I've been using and trusting Equine Colic Relief for years; I never have less than 1 bottle in my barn repertoire. Again, I'm here to reorder. Yesterday, I came home and found my big beautiful mare having a tummy ache. I gave her the Equine Colic Relief, watched her and within the 45 minutes she was back to normal. I have never (crossed my fingers) had Equine Colic Relief fail me. I've used it on my minis. The stuff works, and the equines love the taste. — Tracy B. AZ
