Last Saturday I called you regarding my horse showing signs of colic. Years ago my husband bought a bottle of Equine Colic Relief. I called you to see if I could still use it. I gave it to my horse “Chief” at 8 AM, he had minimal bowel sounds, was trying to roll on the ground several times, would not eat or drink. At 4:45 PM he urinated and moved his bowels with fairly good bowel sounds and the next day he had good bowel sounds and was given Bermuda hay. Thank you for making such a great product. It saved me hundreds of dollars in vet bills. I highly recommend this product and will let my equine friends know about it.. — Joan B, Tucson AZ
I've been using and trusting Equine Colic Relief for years; I never have less than 1 bottle in my barn repertoire. Again, I'm here to reorder. Yesterday, I came home and found my big beautiful mare having a tummy ache. I gave her the Equine Colic Relief, watched her and within the 45 minutes she was back to normal. I have never (crossed my ngers) had Equine Colic Relief fail me. I've used it on my minis. The stuff works, and the equines love the taste. — Tracy B. AZ

Beyond Touch: HOW DISTANT REIKI SUPPORTS YOUR ANIMAL’S WELL-BEING
By Sari Reis, Level 3 Animal Reiki Practitioner/Teacher

Reiki is a gentle, non-invasive, and powerful healing modality that has been used for over a century to restore balance in humans and more recently in animals. Unlike humans, most animals do not want to be touched when they are not feeling well, especially when the practitioner is unknown to them. Practitioners observed, however, that using a non-touch model of Reiki on animals resulted in significant outcomes.
The benefits for Reiki on animals are numerous:
• Stress reduction
• Pain relief
• Emotional healing (trauma)
• Improved recovery from illness, surgery, or injury
• Strengthened immune system.
• Behavioral improvement
• Increased energy and vitality
• Easing end-of-life transition.
Quantum Physics
Originally, Reiki was applied through gentle touch, using the practitioner’s hands to guide the flow of energy. However, with the advance of Quantum Physics, and our understanding that everything in the Universe is made of energy, it was discovered that Reiki’s therapeutic potential is not confined by physical space. Proximity to the person or animal is not necessary for the energy to be efficacious.
Practitioners of Reiki harness this universal energy using focus, intention, and meditation, and then channel it to the animal recipient across a room or across the country. Think of your Tv, Internet, and cell phone. They all use invisible energy frequencies to function. To get a good connection, you need to be on the right channel or energy frequency.
Reiki practitioners are highly trained to connect to the intended individual acting as a conduit for the Reiki energy. Extensive research and experimentation into consciousness and energy fields suggest that intention and focus do indeed influence an individual’s wellbeing, even from far away.
Healing
The actual “healing” that the animal

recipient experiences is the result of engaging their innate self-healing system. Through quiet meditation and intention, the reiki energy connects to the animal’s parasympathetic system, which initiates the relaxation response. Once the animal is in a relaxed state, their self-healing system is stimulated into action, and so is their immune system.
Consider your own body, if you are stressed or in pain, your body is tense and your ability to heal yourself is shut down. However, when you begin to relax, the pain you have lessens, your muscles soften, and your body can now begin to heal.
Personal Experience
A woman in Northern California contacted me while her beloved elderly dog was in the emergency ward receiving a blood transfusion. She was terrified that he was not going to survive, and requested a Reiki session for him. After we hung up, I immediately initiated a distant Reiki session. His mom informed me the next morning that he was being
released from the hospital that day. After 5 or 6 more sessions over the next 2 weeks, her dog, who had been given just weeks to live, went on to enjoy a respectable quality of life for 6 more months. Reiki did not cure her dog; it simply boosted his own healing system so he could continue to thrive.
Sanctuaries, Farms, Rescues
Another wonderful benefit of distant healing is that it can be used with animals everywhere. I belong to an organization called SARA, the Sanctuary Animal Reiki Association. The members of SARA, which number in the hundreds around the world, volunteer their time by sharing Reiki with animals of every species in farms, sanctuaries, and rescue facilities, providing comfort and healing energy. We also collectively offer Reiki healing to animals affected by wars and natural disasters.

earthly life, though heart-breaking, it is also a celebration, a celebration of their life, their wisdom, their perfection, and their unconditional love. When I share Reiki with an animal who is in transition, I focus on their true essencetheir beauty, their strength, and the deep love they have shared with those who cherish them. Animals are honored with the Reiki which allows them to transition wrapped in compassion, light, gratitude, and love. Their transition is not so much an ending as a transcendence infused with reverence, respect, and grace.
Animal Reiki, whether practiced in person, or from afar, is a powerful, safe, and loving way to support your beloved companion. If you are ready to explore how distant Reiki can support your pet’s well-being, I would love to hear from you, no matter where you are.
Reach out today to schedule a session. Let us work together to create an environment of wellness for your best friend.

“THE THRILL OF VICTORY, AND THE AGONY OF DEFEAT” – HORSE EDITION
Written by Carolyn Osborn

It is that time of year again when horse shows of all types are reaching their summer peak. You and your horse have been working for months to finally step into the show ring and win those ribbons and awards. The anticipation is rising, and you have a long list of goals to achieve. But, as anyone who has shown can tell you, stuff happens, and it may not go quite as planned. Yet, there are always those riders that seem to make it look effortless and they always win.
If you have read any of my previous articles, you know I am all about animal communication, energy healing and finding a true balance, for you and your horse, or other animals. There are two topics that I want to address today to help you look after your horse and their well-being, and how that can benefit you both in the show ring. First: the mental and emotional state of both you and your horse. Second: focusing on the overall health and well-being of your horse over the long haul, even if it means not achieving your showing goals as fast as you want. These two topics are intrinsically linked and will ultimately allow you to reach your goals in a safer, more productive, and sustainable way for both of you.
The Mental and Emotional State of Both You and Your Horse
This first topic is gaining new attention. Many top athletes are finally addressing the elephant in the room when it comes to competition. You can be the best at your sport physically and technically, but if you are also not at your mental and emotional best, your performance
can suffer. Just look at what happened to Olympians Simone Biles and Michael Phillips. Both had to withdraw from competition to deal with their emotional and mental health, find a place of balance, and realize that self-care was more important than any competition. As a result, they came back better and stronger on all levels, and were more successful.
This focus is important to bring to the horse world—in particular, to and for the horses themselves. Their riders may be taking care of themselves, but if you don’t do the same for your horse, they could breakdown physically or have a debilitating meltdown when you least expect it. Just think of what the horse must deal with during a competition –your stress, fear, anxiety, uncertainty, other horses and their emotions, new places, etc. This can suddenly become overwhelming. Any one of these items alone can add unnecessary burdens to your horse and its ability to do its job. I am sure you remember how your routine always goes better at home, but suddenly at the show, not so well.
So, what can you do? In my opinion, working with your horse energetically is as important as the training, spa day, practice, etc. They are all part of the program to help your horse on all levels.
What do I mean by working with your horse energetically? That can be several things, including animal communication, energy medicine, clearing old and trapped emotions, clearing old beliefs and memories, bringing the physical and energetic bodies together to work. Your horse is incredibly sensitive and aware of more than we realize. All these modalities work in conjunction with your training and vet to complement each other.
An equally important piece of this puzzle is ideally working energetically with you, the rider, to bring you into balance and harmony in the same way. Then you are not getting in the way of your horse but rather working together in sync as one. It can significantly increase your confidence, focus, calmness and ability to

Partnership Matters, Performance Matters, and Energy Medicine
really listen to your horse in a new way. I have seen this work in many clients who have noticed a big shift in their horse and themselves during a show. One of the benefits of working energetically with you and your horse is it can be done via Zoom and is not invasive in any way. I did this on my horses, and they always loved the energy and the connection.
Focusing on Wellness and Well-being when Working with Horses
The second topic I want to bring into this is addressing the overall wellness and well-being of working with horses. This has been a big topic all over the industry, too, bringing forward many thoughts and ideas. Incorporating regular energy work into a horse’s care can help you find out how they are feeling, what is going on emotionally and mentally with them,
and providing another way to support their physical health.
Regular animal communication and energy medicine can help you know when something is off and needs attention before a major physical issue pops up or a meltdown occurs. Energy Medicine is also a naturally powerful way to help your horse release and clear old memories or experiences that were traumatic or threatening to them, that they still carry with them. As is often the case, horses have many different owners and circumstances, all of which can impact their behavior, attitude, and interfere with performance.
As a reminder, keep your horse informed— about what is going on as a whole, what is new, where they may be going, what is expected of them, and
what they may be feeling or need you to know. Again, horses are very sensitive and absorb so much from everyone around them, including unspoken or unclear cues they pick up from you. They want to please you and do their best, but even they can be overwhelmed or have a bad day. They take disappointing you very hard and may need real help regaining confidence.
I would love to talk more with you about any of this, and answer any questions you may have. I am always
amazed at how animals love the energy work and communication. They really get it and understand it better than we do most of the time. “MY DOG IS JUST BEING STUBBORN”…
Or Are They Trying to Tell Me Something?
Written by Stephanie Barger

“He knows what I’m asking — he’s just being stubborn.”
It’s one of the most common things I hear from dog guardians, especially when their pup seems to ignore a cue, barks at the neighbor walking by, or freezes on a walk. I understand why it feels that way — when you’re trying to do everything “right” and your dog still isn’t cooperating, it can feel frustrating, confusing, and even a little personal.
But here’s the truth:
What we often label as stubbornness is usually stress, confusion, or fear in disguise.
As a trainer specializing in separation anxiety and behavior modification, I work with dogs who seem “difficult” on the surface. But when we look beneath those behaviors — really observe what’s happening in the moment — we often find a dog who is trying to communicate, not defy. When guardians learn how to listen to that communication, everything starts to shift.
When Your Dog Can’t, Not Won’t
Let’s consider a familiar situation: Your dog pulls hard toward another dog across the street. You ask for a “sit” and get… nothing. Your dog has responded to that cue reliably in the past, but today? Not happening. It’s easy to assume they’re being willful.
More likely, your dog is over threshold — their nervous system has moved into a state of heightened arousal, and their ability to think clearly or respond is diminished. Your dog isn’t ignoring you — they’re overwhelmed. Their brain is focused on scanning for danger or escape, not engaging in learned behaviors.
This same dynamic plays out with dogs who “refuse” to go outside, bark at visitors, lunge at other dogs, or chew the couch when left alone. These aren’t signs of rebellion. They’re expressions of emotion. They’re often attempts to regain a sense of control in an environment that feels uncertain or unsafe.
When we reframe “stubborn” as “struggling,” we move from judgment to curiosity — a necessary shift if we want to change behavior in a meaningful way.
Behavior Is a Conversation
Behavior isn’t about obedience — it’s a dialogue. Every bark, freeze, or misstep is your dog’s way of telling you something. When we pause to ask, What might my dog be feeling in this moment?, we begin to build trust, safety, and communication.
Sometimes the message is:
“I’m scared.”
Sometimes it’s:
“I don’t know what you want.’
Sometimes it’s simply:
“I can’t do that right now.”
Unfortunately, when we assume a dog “should know better,” we often respond by adding pressure. We repeat cues, raise our voices, or express frustration — not because we’re unkind, but because we’re unsure what else to do.
But pressure doesn’t help a fearful or confused dog. In fact, it often escalates the behavior we are trying to avoid. The more we push, the more the dog shuts down — or explodes — because we’ve missed the emotional context underneath the behavior.

That’s where thoughtful behavior modification comes in — not just altering surface-level responses but addressing the dog’s internal experience so real change becomes possible.
“That kind of trust doesn’t come from power — it comes from presence, patience, and partnership.”
Real-Life Training Starts with Real-Life Emotions
At Canine Zen, my goal isn’t to create perfectly obedient robots. It’s to help people build the skills and emotional awareness needed to support their dogs with empathy and purpose — especially during the real-world challenges that training videos often leave out. My role is part guide, part translator — helping guardians understand their dog’s body language, emotional state, and stress signals so they can respond with clarity and compassion.
That means teaching practical, doable skills, yes — but also learning how to spot subtle shifts in energy. The difference between a tail wag and a tail flick. That moment your dog goes from curious to cautious. These details matter, especially when working with fearful, anxious, or reactive dogs.
One guardian I worked with felt defeated because her dog wouldn’t lie down quietly at a café, unlike the “well-behaved” dogs she saw around her. What she didn’t
see was that her dog was scanning the environment, hyper-alert to sounds and movement. Instead of drilling down-stay, we focused on helping her pup feel safe. Over time, with patience and support, the behavior followed. The dog rested on their own — not because they were told to, but because they finally could.
When we meet dogs where they are emotionally, we create the conditions for lasting behavioral change.
Your Dog Wants to Succeed — Help Them Get There
I truly believe every dog wants to do well. When they’re overwhelmed, confused, or anxious, they need more than just practice or repetition. They need understanding.
Sometimes that means avoiding certain environments for a little while.
Sometimes it means breaking skills down into tiny, achievable steps.
Sometimes it means learning to listen, not just instruct.
This is where fear-free, force-free training becomes so powerful. It honors the dog’s emotional state while working toward progress. It teaches both dog and guardian to work with, not against, each other. Perhaps most importantly, it builds a foundation of trust.

Trust is what enables your dog to walk beside you on a loud, crowded street.
Trust is what helps them stay calm when a guest arrives.
Trust is what makes your partnership feel like a dance, NOT a tug-of-war.
Calm the Chaos
That kind of trust doesn’t come from power — it comes from presence, patience, and partnership.
Ready to Rethink “Stubborn”? Let’s Talk.
If your dog seems stubborn, reactive, or anxious — and you’re not sure how to help — I’d love to support you. Through personalized, virtual coaching, I work with clients across the U.S. to navigate
challenges like reactivity, fear-based behaviors, and separation anxiety. Together, we’ll create a plan tailored to your dog and your life, so you can move forward with clarity, connection, and calm.
Let’s replace “stubborn” with “supported.”
Let’s calm the chaos!

WITH HOMEGROWN HORSEMANSHIP AND PERSONALIZED CARE, ISABEL SEMPE IS CHANGING THE SUPPLEMENT GAME
Written by April Bilodeau

With so many supplement companies available to horse owners, it can be difficult to choose the right one for your horse. To make that decision easier, Isabel Sempe, owner and founder of Natural Equine Essentials, spent several years researching and developing which all-natural supplements work best for common equine ailments.
Sempe was born into a multigenerational horse breeding family from Honduras. Her father bred Quarter, Andalusian, and Peruvian horses and is one of the founders of the Peruvian Horse Association of Honduras.
“My dad was one of the first to import world class horses from South and North America into Honduras, for breeding and competition purposes,” Sempe says. “He was very involved in the daily care, making his own bran mash and growing his own grade ‘A’ Alfalfa hay for the horses.”
She spent her childhood on their 2,000acre equine breeding, agriculture, and dairy farm. She observed and learned the inner workings of the farm and gained firsthand knowledge of the many issues regarding raising, breeding, and caring for horses in the family business. With 80 horses on the property, vets were always there, and their farrier lived on the property. With this set up, she was able to absorb information from experts in their field through out her early years.
Sempe started riding horses at six years old. She has competed internationally in show jumping, dressage, eventing,
and Peruvian Paso Horse competitions. At an early age she learned English riding through her aunt, Titi Mills, a well-known trainer who represented Honduras in the Central American and Caribbean Games in show jumping, winning two silver medals.
“Titi showed me how horsemanship, discipline, hard work and attention to detail pay off in the long run for your horse and yourself as a rider,” Sempe says.
Strict and Disciplined
Sempe married and, through her husband’s job, moved and lived in four different countries in the span of 15 years. She was able to make friends and train with various Olympic trainers, well-known veterinarians, and farriers who are still close friends and parts of her vast equine network. This network and experience in different regions expanded her knowledge and provided support from accomplished equine professionals around the world.
“One of my trainers, Oswaldo MendezHerbruger (three time Olympic rider) was really intense,” says Sempe. “He said to me, ‘I am going to train you and take you to the Central American Games on your mare in three years.’”
Sempe describes herself as disciplined and strict, but this training program was one of the most intense she had ever gone through—and almost wore her down.
“I was crying all the time,” says Sempe. “It was very hard work.”
But that hard work paid off and in 2013, she was a member of the first eventing team to represent Honduras in the Central American Games.
“At 35 years old, I learned that it is never too late to start something,” says Sempe.
“When you work hard and that horse is your partner, you understand each other. You learn to read each other. What they’re thinking, what they’re feeling, it impacts you.”

Soon after, her husband’s job took their family to Wellington, FL. While it was a very different environment than what she was used to, she was introduced to the world of supplements…and hasn’t looked back since.
Creating a Product
Two of Sempe’s personal horses traveled from Chile, South America, to Florida with her, including her daughter’s horse who had a tough time with the change.
“He had allergies, got a colic from eating sand, had summer sores. You name it, he got it,” says Sempe.
She tried popular supplements, including natural supplements that were available at the time, with no results. This led her to dig into her network and research what natural ingredients would help her horses. Among those she consulted was a family friend who is also
a renowned veterinary pharmacologist and toxicologist. She consulted certified labs and various FEI veterinarians.
She was able to create products that not only helped her horses recover, but made them healthier and more responsive. Her close friends witnessed the quick and amazing change in her horses and asked if they could try her products on their own horses. They were suffering from digestive issues.
They started a trial supplement program under the close supervision of their veterinarian who evaluated their horses on a monthly basis. After a trial of 25 of their horses, all their coats were now shiny, and the horses with leaky gut now had normal stool. All the horses looked healthier, behaved better, and had noticeable improvements in gut health. To date they remain loyal clients and friends.
Growing Her Business
Since the creation of her first product, Sempe dove into discovering other needs in the market and filling them with natural supplements and products that focus on those needs.
Her products include complete gastric health and joint support supplements to electrolytes and fly control plus grooming products. Sempe works with FEI vets to ensure that all products have no banned ingredients and are FEI and USEF show-safe.
Sempe prides herself in creating strategic partnerships with all her clients, making sure that she listens to their needs and helps their horses through her supplements to become healthier, happier, and stronger through her unique understanding and lifelong experience with horses and the equine world. Natural Equine Essentials is a proud member of the renowned National Animal Supplement Council (NASC).
All their supplements and grooming products are 100% natural and are made in Natural Equine Essential’s warehouse facilities in Kentucky.

SAVING WILD MUSTANGS:
Sweetbeau Horses Story
Written by Michael Soffel
When Patricia Griffin-Soffel learned that 900 wild mustangs were at risk of slaughter, she knew she couldn’t stand by. Horses have always been a treasure to her soul—and this moment ignited a mission. In October 2016, Patricia and her husband, Michael Soffel, stepped in to help fund the adoption of all 900 mustangs from a failing South Dakota rescue. That decisive act marked the beginning of Sweetbeau Horses.
No Horse Left Behind
“No horse left behind” became the rallying cry to save 900 mustangs from slaughter. It took a year to find homes for them all. The Soffels personally took 25 stallions—without even having a ranch yet. While others provided the logistics and expertise, the Soffels contributed major funding from the recent sale of their software company. With help from matching donors, every horse was adopted. Through this journey, the Soffels deepened their understanding of the mustangs’ plight and began to envision the long-term role they would play.
The Origin of Sweetbeau Horses
To give their 25 rescued mustangs a second chance at life in our domestic world, the Soffels founded Sweetbeau Horses, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and established a mustang training center in Creston, California. Named in honor of their beloved Golden Retriever Beaudacious, Sweetbeau became a softlanding spot for gelded mustangs—as they began their journey from wildto-mild-to-adoption. The Creston ranch was ideal, with a strong horse culture, excellent facilities, and, most importantly, plentiful water to support the herd.

Producing Adoptable Mustangs
The first 25 geldings were the start of Sweetbeau’s rehoming program—each one successfully adopted into a forever loving home. Their transformation proved the model worked and opened the door for future mustangs to follow.
Every year, the Bureau of Land Management rounds up thousands of wild mustangs, many ending up in overcrowded holding pens with uncertain futures. Some are adopted, others languish for years, and too many are sent to kill pens. Sweetbeau steps in to change that. Today, the program actively supports around 16 mustangs at a time, with four new horses joining from the latest roundup just last year.
Adoption Success Stories
We’ve had 60 mustangs come through our program and all adoptable mustangs have found forever loving homes across the US. Including 4 that have been adopted to various therapy and children’s riding programs. One special horse, Tango, still lives at the ranch as Patricia’s trail companion.
“He was the first I bonded with—a playful, curious chestnut with a wild eye and a huge personality. I had to keep him.”
Looking back, the original 25 mustangs set the standard for Sweetbeau’s success.
“Not one had a sponsor,” Patricia recalls. “We took a leap of faith, knowing we’d need to build awareness and find others who shared our passion to make the nonprofit sustainable.”

Sponsorships and TrustBased Training
Today, several Sweetbeau mustangs have sponsors—often parents of horseloving kids. “It’s been a slow but steady process,” says Patricia. “We create a personalized photo book for each sponsored horse, sharing their story. It makes the connection more meaningful and supports our fundraising efforts. We’re always looking for new sponsors.”
At the heart of Sweetbeau’s program is trust. Every horse experiences only positive, respectful interactions, progressing at their own pace. Training can take 12 to 24 months, and no horse is adopted until they’ve proven safe and confident on trails, beaches, and camping trips. Currently, two horses are adoption-ready, two more projected in the Fall, and the rest are still at various levels of training.
Finding the Right Match
With so much care invested, Patricia personally approves every adoption. She honors each mustang’s journey by ensuring they’re placed in the best possible home. Sweetbeaus goal is to set up horse and adopter for long-term success.
“I spend time with every horse at Sweetbeau,” she says. “I’m often the first to touch them, the first to halter them. That connection and bond helps me match them with the right person.”
Teamwork
Sweetbeau’s daily training is led by a dedicated passionate team, with Patricia still hands-on during the early trustbuilding stages. “I love guiding first touches, haltering, and groundwork,” she says.
Patricia carefully vets every trainer, learning from past missteps that set horses back. “Our team now is exceptional. I know each horse is taught to trust before anything else.”
Adoptions are a true team effort. “We review every application, check references, and require adopters to spend two days at the ranch working with us and the horse,” Patricia explains. “When it’s the right match, any sadness in letting go is replaced with joy.”

THINKING ABOUT BUYING OR SELLING A HOME? HERE’S WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW...
Written by Kathy Fissori

The housing market is beginning to normalize, shifting back to a healthier and more balanced place. While that might sound like a step back, it’s actually a good thing! It’s what a stable market looks like—we’ve just gotten used to the fast-paced, high-pressure seller’s market of the past few years. If you’re planning to sell—whether soon or sometime next year—there are still great opportunities. The key is staying informed and having a strategy that fits today’s market.
Inventory Is Rising, Buyers Are Gaining Leverage
There are more homes hitting the market, but inventory levels depend on location.
In areas where supply is bouncing back to normal, buyers now have more options—meaning sellers need to work harder to make their homes stand out. More choices don’t mean buyers hold all the cards, but it does mean pricing and presentation matter more than ever.
Pricing Your Home Correctly Is Critical
Today’s buyers are quick to pass on homes that feel overpriced. Setting the right price at the start is key to attracting offers and selling for top dollar. A wellpriced, move-in ready home is still in demand. But sellers who overreach are often forced to reduce their asking price. In fact, nearly 1 in 5 sellers are making price cuts to spark interest.
Flexibility Can Help Seal the Deal
We’re no longer in a market where buyers are waiving every contingency to get their offer accepted. With more

homes to choose from, many buyers are now requesting repairs, credits, or help with closing costs.
According to Redfin, nearly 44% of sellers are agreeing to negotiate. This doesn’t mean the market is bad—it simply reflects a more typical real estate environment, similar to what we saw pre-2020. If you’re selling, think of concessions as tools—not setbacks. They can help bridge the gap and get the deal across the finish line. And with home values up over 55% in the past five years, most sellers still walk away with strong returns, even after a concession or two.

Bottom Line
The sellers who succeed in today’s market are the ones who understand the shift and adjust their expectations and strategies accordingly. The best way to stay in tune with market feedback? Work closely with a local expert who knows how to price competitively based on realtime data. Having a trusted local expert by your side can make all the difference. Let’s chat about what’s working right now in our area, or we can refer you to an expert in your area so we can position your home for success whenever you’re ready to make a move.

THE UNSUNG HERO OF EQUINE NUTRITION - THE RATION BALANCER
Written by Lindsey Close

In the world of equine nutrition, there exists a quiet yet powerful workhorse: the ration balancer. Don’t get shocked by the price tag – let’s break this down. Often overlooked because of price point, this concentrated vitamin and mineral supplement, fed at 1-2 pounds daily, acts as the essential daily multivitamin for your horse. It’s not a meal replacement, nor a substitute for vital forage, but a targeted tool to bridge the nutritional gaps that even the most carefully chosen primary ration might leave behind. When you look at cost per pound, you might find that choosing a ration balancer will end up with cost savings in the long run while gaining more nutritional coverage in your horse’s diet.
Think of it this way: just as we might take a daily vitamin to ensure our bodies receive a baseline of micronutrients, a ration balancer provides that same foundational support for our equine companions. This makes it an especially astute choice for “easy keepers” – those horses who maintain their weight effortlessly – or for horses thriving on pasture or hay, who may not require additional calories but still need a comprehensive spectrum of vitamins and minerals.
Conversely, it’s crucial to understand what a ration balancer isn’t. If your goal is to gain weight or fuel the intense demands of a performance horse, a ration balancer alone won’t deliver the necessary caloric punch. It’s a complement, not a calorie source. That is what makes ration balancers such an excellent choice for our long-eared friends, donkeys, and mules. They are often underfed quality nutrition because they are such easy keepers, however, they

still have a nutrient baseline that needs to be met, just like horses.
A common misconception surrounding ration balancers is their seemingly high protein content, sometimes hovering around 30%. However, the key lies in the minuscule feeding rate. At just 1-2 pounds, the actual amount of protein consumed is not substantial enough to cause the often-feared “hot” behavior. In fact, attributing excitability solely to a balancer is a simplification. More often, a horse labeled as “hot” is simply receiving more energy than their lifestyle and workload demand. Horses lacking essential nutrients may appear lethargic. By filling these gaps, we’re not creating
a hyperactive horse, but rather allowing them to feel their best, with the energy to thrive. It’s a crucial distinction: fueling well-being versus overfeeding energy. Similarly, while ration balancers may not be low NSC, the feed rate is so small that they can typically be worked into a diet successfully when considering the meal’s full NSC content. Consult with a professional when designing a low NSC diet, as it is not simply about keeping NSC levels below 10-12% in the total diet.
Let’s go shopping! Feed stores offer a diverse array of ration balancers, each with its unique formulation and added benefits. This is where
informed consumer choice comes into play. Do you prefer a straightforward, foundational balancer that allows you to add additional individual supplements? Or does an “all-in-one” option, perhaps containing biotin for hoof health or gut-supportive ingredients, better suit your needs and preferences? Take a look at the feed tag and see if the product you are looking at contains what you want. You can also source the feed spec sheet online on the manufacturer’s website for a better breakdown of the feed nutritional value. Be sure that you are noting units of measure when comparing one brand to another. One may be listed as “ppm” while another is in “mg,” and that can be deceiving when you are trying to determine what the product is contributing to the diet. Be on the lookout for “tag dressing” or fancy marketing. For example, if a feed says it contains biotin, notice how much is listed. The recommended amount of biotin a horse should be supplemented per day is 15-20 mg. If the balancer only contains 1 mg per pound, you are not meeting the suggested supplementation level.
Beyond their nutritional profile, ration balancers offer significant practical advantages for barn owners, managers, and trainers. Many horses can maintain optimal health and condition on just a balancer alone, simplifying feeding routines and potentially reducing time spent and feed costs. For horses with higher energy demands, a balancer provides an excellent nutritional foundation to build up with performance or complete feeds. This strategic approach not only saves time for those doing the feeding but also elevates the overall quality and precision of your equine nutrition program.
In conclusion, the ration balancer stands as a testament to the power of targeted nutrition. It’s a small addition with the potential for significant impact, ensuring your horse receives the essential vitamins and minerals they need to thrive, regardless of their workload or metabolic tendencies. By understanding its role and benefits, we can move beyond simply feeding and truly nourish our equine partners from the inside out.

If you are looking for a comprehensive ration balancer, consider the new Stable MAX Ultra Mate from Elk Grove Milling, Inc. Stable MAX™ Ultra Mate features the LifeFORCE Formula from Alltech. GEARY WHITING ON EQUINE MASSAGE
Written by Geary Whiting

As I attempt to keep this short for you, the reader, I will only cover the most important points of my very full career.
In 1961, while attending Coast Union High School in Cambria, California, I became interested in strength, power, and overall conditioning through weight lifting, much to my father’s chagrin. He could not talk me out of what he would call “fake muscle” and a total waste of time. Being a poor student left me frustrated and angry for most of my childhood. I found high intensity resistance training to be the perfect confidence builder as it helped me win many fights. As my career in the fitness world continued, my father eventually had to admit weight lifting had not been a waste of time. When his son brought world class Olympic trainers and athletes to his parents’ 50th wedding anniversary, how could a father not be proud and appreciative of his son.
I continued my lifting and excelled to the tune of bench pressing 425 pounds at a body weight of 164.5 pounds. It was around this time I had my first massage which turned my world towards body work. It had become evident body work made a huge difference in my performance as a athlete ... and many other important areas of my life such as eliminating illnesses and not having to call on the medical profession except for accidents.
World Class Trainer, World Class Athletes
In 1981, I started my education in the world of massage. In 1986, a year after being introduced to the art of Shiatsu massage, I found myself working in the realm of world class athletes as a personal trainer and body worker. This art, that I had so recently learned, allowed me to

help athletes improve in their sports and set new world records in track and field! The Greeks said it best, “the athlete who does not use massage is the common man.”
One of the most unique athletes that I worked with was Bob Wieland, the double amputee who walked across America on his hands. Bob completed this feat from 1981-1985, a total of 3 years, 6 months and 8 days. I joined Bob in his second year of completing marathons on his hands.
My Shiatsu sessions improved his previous New York marathon time by almost 18 hours. The Los Angeles Marathon brought added challenges for Bob as he had no time for training. As a result, he pulled his right deltoid at mile marker 5. Because of my expertise gained from personal training and
studying Shiatsu massage, 90 minutes later we were back on course heading to the finish line. It was a new World Record for Bob. He finished in just under 19 hours.
Taking It To The Care Of Animals
In 1995, I adapted my human Shiatsu techniques to the horse at the request of a client who had been injured in a horserelated accident. At that time equine massage was pretty much unheard of and I had no idea if it would work or if I could convince people it had value. Three years later, I was being asked by the naysayers, “can you teach me how to work on my horse?” A few years later, I purchased the Walking W Ranch and started my Academy, focusing on both horses and their riders. The Team Concept was born.

I received an Outstanding Achievement Award in 2003 for my accomplishments in Oriental Medicine through the use of Shiatsu Anma. My successes with helping both horses and their riders earned me recognition at the 2015 World Massage festival. I was honored to be inducted into the Massage Therapy Hall of Fame and recipient of The Pioneer of Massage Award. The latter award recognized me as a Bridge Builder, creating a way for others to have success in the equine massage field.
I currently work on and teach the students at the academy how to adapt Shiatsu techniques to work on horses, dogs, sheep, humans, cats, cattle, and pigs. I am located in Paso Robles and frequently travel to other areas for horse shows, group sessions. I also have an extensive lecture series which covers many important subjects vital to the health and well-being of men, women and animals.

For larger items, the popular “Pickins Area” is available, where porters assist in delivering purchased goods to the holding area and then to your car at the end of the day. This is one of the special touches that make our event stand above the rest.
Plan Your Visit
Tickets are available now at My805Tix. com, with options for First Peck, Early Bird and General Admission. Past shows have sold out quickly, so early purchase is recommended for those hoping to beat the crowds and score the best pieces.
Vendor Deadline Approaching
For those interested in being part of the show as a dealer, this is the last call to submit contracts and join the flock. Whether you’re a seasoned vendor or a first-time seller with a great eye, there’s still a chance to showcase your goods to thousands of eager shoppers in one of California’s most supportive marketplaces.
Twice a year, the show transforms the Paso Robles Event Center into a vibrant maze of curated booths, each one packed with handpicked treasures, from rustic farmhouse finds to midcentury gems, antique textiles, garden décor, architectural salvage and everything in between.

LET’S RODEO!
By Tom J. Bordonaro, Jr.

The 29th Creston Classic Rodeo (CCR) is fast approaching! Come join us on September 11-14, at the CCR grounds in Creston, CA, for the best homegrown ranch rodeo in the West!
The very first CCR was held in September 1996 in the quaint little town of Creston, all nine blocks of it holding a population of less than 500 people. Today the town consists of two bar/restaurants, a small general store and deli, western store, a church, and a post office. One can get either a great steak at the Loading Chute, or a delicious burger at the Long Branch Saloon. The rodeo grounds are almost directly across the street, at the corner of Webster Road and Swayze Street. The town also has an elementary school, community pool, and community center, the last two of which are supported annually from proceeds of the CCR. CCR is a 501c(3) charitable organization with a mission to support, promote, and sustain public and charitable programs providing a direct benefit to the Creston community. Donations to CCR are tax deductible.
The rodeo kicks off on Thursday, Sept. 11, with Jackpot Barrel Racing, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Come watch barrel racers from ages 2 to 80 race around barrels on horseback to beat the top times. Friday night brings us Jackpot Team Roping, starting at 5:30 p.m. The Main Rodeo performance begins on Saturday, Sept. 13 at 4:30 p.m. and happens again on Sunday, starting at 12:30 p.m. Saturday has dummy roping for the kids up to 12 years old at 3 p.m. Both Saturday at 3:30 p.m. and Sunday at 11 a.m. is the ever popular Mutton Busting event, where future cowboys and cowgirls 3-6 years old earn their rodeo spurs! Come join us Sunday morning at 8 a.m. for Cowboy Church.
The vendor area is growing in size every year! Come view merchandise or have a delicious meal at one of the excellent

food vendors! Indulge in a variety of good food while shopping for everything from farm art to western gear, apparel to jewelry, and more!

CCR is an all-volunteer rodeo that has been held annually every September at the Rodeo Grounds at Jail Flats Ranch. The rodeo is more of a traditional ranch rodeo style and not that of a professional rodeo. Competitors are mostly local and come together in a venue of friendly competition where their ranch life skills can be displayed. There are various events for cowboys, cowgirls, and even kids to compete. From team roping to mutton bustin’ and barrel racing to steer riding, there is something for everyone to enjoy.
CCR recently donated needed funds to local charities to support their efforts in providing services to the Creston community. All profits from CCR are donated to local charities to aid in the philosophy of “Creston helping Creston.”
The number one recipient of donations from the CCR is the Creston Community Center. For decades CCR has donated to help the continuing effort to convert, remodel, and improve Creston’s old fire station 43 into a Community Center for local resident and group use.
Another recipient is the Creston Pool. Donations help maintain the community pool and keep it open and free for Creston kids. For more than 60 years, Crestonians built, maintained and provided a pool for Creston’s youth and CCR is pleased to help this tradition continue.
“Creston Classic Rodeo is pleased to present all profits to support local efforts to fill the needs of the Creston Community,” said CCR President Tom Bordonaro. “These funds will go a long way to building a community center for all Crestonians to enjoy as well as continue the over 60 year tradition of providing a pool for Creston kids.”
Sponsors, volunteers, and vendors can learn more and sign up to help at CrestonClassicRodeo.org or by emailing us at CrestonClassicRodeo@yahoo.com, PO Box 121, Creston, California, 93432. Competitors can sign up between Aug. 26 and Sept. 6 at CrestonClassicRodeo. com.
Please join us in September to enjoy this unique Creston tradition!
