WITH HOMEGROWN HORSEMANSHIP AND PERSONALIZED CARE, ISABEL SEMPE IS CHANGING THE SUPPLEMENT GAME

With so many supplement companies available to horse owners, it can be difficult to choose the right one for your horse. To make that decision easier, Isabel Sempe, owner and founder of Natural Equine Essentials, spent several years researching and developing which all-natural supplements work best for common equine ailments.

Sempe was born into a multigenerational horse breeding family from Honduras. Her father bred Quarter, Andalusian, and Peruvian horses and is one of the founders of the Peruvian Horse Association of Honduras.

“My dad was one of the first to import world class horses from South and North America into Honduras, for breeding and competition purposes,” Sempe says. “He was very involved in the daily care, making his own bran mash and growing his own grade ‘A’ Alfalfa hay for the horses.”

She spent her childhood on their 2,000acre equine breeding, agriculture, and dairy farm. She observed and learned the inner workings of the farm and gained firsthand knowledge of the many issues regarding raising, breeding, and caring for horses in the family business. With 80 horses on the property, vets were always there, and their farrier lived on the property. With this set up, she was able to absorb information from experts in their field through out her early years.

Sempe started riding horses at six years old. She has competed internationally in show jumping, dressage, eventing,

and Peruvian Paso Horse competitions. At an early age she learned English riding through her aunt, Titi Mills, a well-known trainer who represented Honduras in the Central American and Caribbean Games in show jumping, winning two silver medals.

“Titi showed me how horsemanship, discipline, hard work and attention to detail pay off in the long run for your horse and yourself as a rider,” Sempe says.

Strict and Disciplined

Sempe married and, through her husband’s job, moved and lived in four different countries in the span of 15 years. She was able to make friends and train with various Olympic trainers, well-known veterinarians, and farriers who are still close friends and parts of her vast equine network. This network and experience in different regions expanded her knowledge and provided support from accomplished equine professionals around the world.

“One of my trainers, Oswaldo MendezHerbruger (three time Olympic rider) was really intense,” says Sempe. “He said to me, ‘I am going to train you and take you to the Central American Games on your mare in three years.’”

Sempe describes herself as disciplined and strict, but this training program was one of the most intense she had ever gone through—and almost wore her down.

“I was crying all the time,” says Sempe. “It was very hard work.”

But that hard work paid off and in 2013, she was a member of the first eventing team to represent Honduras in the Central American Games.

“At 35 years old, I learned that it is never too late to start something,” says Sempe.

“When you work hard and that horse is your partner, you understand each other. You learn to read each other. What they’re thinking, what they’re feeling, it impacts you.”

Soon after, her husband’s job took their family to Wellington, FL. While it was a very different environment than what she was used to, she was introduced to the world of supplements…and hasn’t looked back since.

Creating a Product

Two of Sempe’s personal horses traveled from Chile, South America, to Florida with her, including her daughter’s horse who had a tough time with the change.

“He had allergies, got a colic from eating sand, had summer sores. You name it, he got it,” says Sempe.

She tried popular supplements, including natural supplements that were available at the time, with no results. This led her to dig into her network and research what natural ingredients would help her horses. Among those she consulted was a family friend who is also

a renowned veterinary pharmacologist and toxicologist. She consulted certified labs and various FEI veterinarians.

She was able to create products that not only helped her horses recover, but made them healthier and more responsive. Her close friends witnessed the quick and amazing change in her horses and asked if they could try her products on their own horses. They were suffering from digestive issues.

They started a trial supplement program under the close supervision of their veterinarian who evaluated their horses on a monthly basis. After a trial of 25 of their horses, all their coats were now shiny, and the horses with leaky gut now had normal stool. All the horses looked healthier, behaved better, and had noticeable improvements in gut health. To date they remain loyal clients and friends.

Growing Her Business

Since the creation of her first product, Sempe dove into discovering other needs in the market and filling them with natural supplements and products that focus on those needs.

Her products include complete gastric health and joint support supplements to electrolytes and fly control plus grooming products. Sempe works with FEI vets to ensure that all products have no banned ingredients and are FEI and USEF show-safe.

Sempe prides herself in creating strategic partnerships with all her clients, making sure that she listens to their needs and helps their horses through her supplements to become healthier, happier, and stronger through her unique understanding and lifelong experience with horses and the equine world. Natural Equine Essentials is a proud member of the renowned National Animal Supplement Council (NASC).

All their supplements and grooming products are 100% natural and are made in Natural Equine Essential’s warehouse facilities in Kentucky.

FRESH START SPORT HORSES

Thoroughbreds are a breed everyone has an opinion about. It seems as though most people either love them, or…they don’t.

Since thoroughbreds are purpose-bred for racing, as opposed to for sport, they come in all shapes, sizes, temperaments and so on. Which makes it unfair to stereotype them when each one needs to be seen as an individual. The one thing I find common with most of the 150+ ex race-horses we have had come into our program, is that they are overall really willing and trusting creatures. As long as they are not in pain or have been mistreated, many can go to a lesson program to teach kids very early on, or become upper-level sport horses, or just a nice trail horse or companion. There is never a dull moment being around these guys!

Fresh Start Sport Horses was started in 2015 and became a non-profit charity in 2018. What makes us unique, is that we have very educated and experienced

riders evaluating and training the horses for their next career. We work closely with our vets and farriers to address any issues or concerns. Once our horses are ready to start training, after their downtime, they are put into a light,

gentle, and confidence building program making sure they use their bodies correctly and build muscle and fitness with focus on relaxation, connection and suppleness.

Our struggle, is getting funding for the charity. To the public, our horses are shiny, at a great weight, ridden by good riders with quality tack, and on top of that, we are at a dreamy facility with grass pasture and very large outdoor stalls. What else could we need?

Well, the reality is, many of our horses need time off when they arrive. We have some horses that have needed over a year off. Some, arrive 100% sound, however, they are not easy horses and finding the right home can take ages! We have had some horses stay with us for a few years before the right home came along. But because we care so much about them, we have had very few returns over the years, and many barns/trainers have returned to adopt many more horses from us and

through that we have built many solid relationships. Some horses have ups and downs as they learn new skills. Some can get really stressed after a test ride and need to be pulled “off the market” for a few weeks.

I personally don’t like to call Fresh Start a “rescue”. While we have rescued dozens of horses over the years (from low-end auctions, pulled from shelters, and taken in owner relinquished horses, for a variety of reasons), I like to focus on the fact that we are keeping so many horses from becoming rescues in the first place! Supporting us means more horses stay safe. That they never have to know what a bad place is like and avoid the trauma.

We are currently working on creating educational videos for our YouTube channel (@freshstartsporthorses), and starting an educational blog on our website (freshstartsporthorses.org). The horses teach us things every day, and spending time with them 7 days a week, all day, for years, has taught me [personally] so much about them, and the people around them!

Fresh Start Sport Horses is currently looking for volunteers, board members, donors, and sponsors. Small and large one-time or monthly donations are equally appreciated. Any funds raised go directly to the horses. Feel free to contact us directly with any questions!

WHEN LESS IS MORE

Horses are extraordinary animals— powerful, graceful, and deeply attuned to their environment. They carry us, work with us, and form bonds that are as unique as they are profound. But just like us, they experience physical tension, stress, and imbalances that can impact their well-being and performance.

While traditional methods including veterinary medicine, chiropractic adjustments, and massage have their place, light-touch bodywork offers a gentle yet deeply effective approach to supporting your horse’s physical and emotional health.

However, this isn’t just about relieving discomfort—it’s about fostering a deeper connection with your horse, listening to their subtle cues, and empowering them to release tension in their own unique way. The results can be transformative, enhancing trust, relaxation, and performance.

Unlike traditional bodywork techniques that rely on force or deep pressure, lighttouch techniques focus on cooperation with the horse. It involves a soft, mindful touch that taps into the horse’s natural ability to release tension. By tuning in to the horse’s subtle responses—such as blinking, licking, or shifting their weight—practitioners identify areas of discomfort or restriction and guide the horse into a state of relaxation.

This gentle approach aligns with how horses naturally release tension in the wild. When they feel safe and supported, their nervous system can shift from a state of “fight or flight” to one of “rest and digest.”

At its core, light touch therapy isn’t something you do to the horse—it’s something you do with them.

The Benefits of Light Touch

1. Relieving Physical Tension and Pain. Horses are masters at compensating for discomfort. A slight imbalance or strain in one part of their body can lead to a cascade of issues, from tightness in the poll to stiffness in the hindquarters. Light-touch helps release these restrictions gently and effectively, promoting freer movement and improved performance. Whether your horse is a high-performance athlete, a pleasure mount, or a retiree, this

approach can make a meaningful difference in their comfort and mobility.

2. Reducing Stress and Anxiety. Horses are incredibly sensitive creatures. They pick up on our emotions, their environment, and the demands placed on them. Over time, stress can manifest as physical tension, behavioral issues, or a general sense of unease. Lighttouch creates a space for your horse to relax deeply, both physically and mentally. Many horses respond by dropping their heads, yawning, or even falling asleep during a session. This state of relaxation allows them to let go of accumulated stress and

restore balance to their nervous system.

3. Strengthening the Horse-Human Bond. One of the most rewarding aspects of light-touch is the way it enhances your connection with your horse. By learning to listen to their subtle cues and respect their boundaries, you build a foundation of trust and partnership. Horses treated with light touch often become more willing and engaged, both on the ground and under saddle. They feel heard, understood, and supported— deepening the bond between horse and human.

4. Supporting Recovery and Longevity. While light touch bodywork is not a substitute for veterinary care, it is an excellent complement to other treatments. By encouraging circulation, reducing inflammation, and relieving tension, it supports the body’s natural healing processes. It’s also a powerful tool for preventing injuries. Regular sessions can help identify and address small issues before they become major problems, keeping your horse healthy and active for years to come.

My Journey with Light Touch Therapy

As an equine bodyworker, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing the incredible transformations that a light-touch can bring and is what drew me, most of all, to the Masterson Method. One of the most memorable moments came during a session with a competitive barrel horse who had been struggling with inconsistent turns.

As I worked gently along his poll and neck, he began to release tension with a series of deep yawns and full-body shakes. His rider later shared that not only had his turns improved, but he also seemed happier and more willing during training sessions.

Stories like this remind me of the impact we can have when we slow down, listen,

and meet our horses where they are.

Why the Masterson Method?

The Masterson Method is a leading approach to light-touch therapy that empowers horse owners, trainers, and equine professionals to take an active role in their horse’s well-being.

Unlike some modalities that require extensive training or equipment, the Masterson Method is accessible to anyone. It’s practical, intuitive, and deeply rewarding—not just for your horse, but for you as well.

In February 2025, I’m excited to bring this powerful practice to our community through hosting the Masterson Method Light to the Core 2-day course which is designed for horse lovers of all experience levels who want to learn the fundamentals of light-touch therapy. In

GEARY WHITING ON EQUINE MASSAGE

As I attempt to keep this short for you, the reader, I will only cover the most important points of my very full career.

In 1961, while attending Coast Union High School in Cambria, California, I became interested in strength, power, and overall conditioning through weight lifting, much to my father’s chagrin. He could not talk me out of what he would call “fake muscle” and a total waste of time. Being a poor student left me frustrated and angry for most of my childhood. I found high intensity resistance training to be the perfect confidence builder as it helped me win many fights. As my career in the fitness world continued, my father eventually had to admit weight lifting had not been a waste of time. When his son brought world class Olympic trainers and athletes to his parents’ 50th wedding anniversary, how could a father not be proud and appreciative of his son.

I continued my lifting and excelled to the tune of bench pressing 425 pounds at a body weight of 164.5 pounds. It was around this time I had my first massage which turned my world towards body work. It had become evident body work made a huge difference in my performance as a athlete ... and many other important areas of my life such as eliminating illnesses and not having to call on the medical profession except for accidents.

World Class Trainer, World Class Athletes

In 1981, I started my education in the world of massage. In 1986, a year after being introduced to the art of Shiatsu massage, I found myself working in the realm of world class athletes as a personal trainer and body worker. This art, that I had so recently learned, allowed me to

help athletes improve in their sports and set new world records in track and field! The Greeks said it best, “the athlete who does not use massage is the common man.”

One of the most unique athletes that I worked with was Bob Wieland, the double amputee who walked across America on his hands. Bob completed this feat from 1981-1985, a total of 3 years, 6 months and 8 days. I joined Bob in his second year of completing marathons on his hands.

My Shiatsu sessions improved his previous New York marathon time by almost 18 hours. The Los Angeles Marathon brought added challenges for Bob as he had no time for training. As a result, he pulled his right deltoid at mile marker 5. Because of my expertise gained from personal training and

studying Shiatsu massage, 90 minutes later we were back on course heading to the finish line. It was a new World Record for Bob. He finished in just under 19 hours.

Taking It To The Care Of Animals

In 1995, I adapted my human Shiatsu techniques to the horse at the request of a client who had been injured in a horserelated accident. At that time equine massage was pretty much unheard of and I had no idea if it would work or if I could convince people it had value. Three years later, I was being asked by the naysayers, “can you teach me how to work on my horse?” A few years later, I purchased the Walking W Ranch and started my Academy, focusing on both horses and their riders. The Team Concept was born.

I received an Outstanding Achievement Award in 2003 for my accomplishments in Oriental Medicine through the use of Shiatsu Anma. My successes with helping both horses and their riders earned me recognition at the 2015 World Massage festival. I was honored to be inducted into the Massage Therapy Hall of Fame and recipient of The Pioneer of Massage Award. The latter award recognized me as a Bridge Builder, creating a way for others to have success in the equine massage field.

I currently work on and teach the students at the academy how to adapt Shiatsu techniques to work on horses, dogs, sheep, humans, cats, cattle, and pigs. I am located in Paso Robles and frequently travel to other areas for horse shows, group sessions. I also have an extensive lecture series which covers many important subjects vital to the health and well-being of men, women and animals.

DO ANIMALS EXPERIENCE EMOTIONS?

You May Already Know the Answer

For many years, it was thought animals did not have emotions as we humans experience them. People thought that “animal instincts” were all they needed to know about what caused animals to behave as they do.

My early years with horses made me wonder why those assumptions didn’t add up, and made me wonder why, so I started paying very close attention, personally, and then professionally. Now, after working with animals for many years, I can say with certainty that they do experience emotions far more deeply than we realize. If you have had a close relationship with your animals, you too will know that they do as well. They just express them in a different way than humans do. But this does not make them any less strong or impactful.

I want to discuss with you today why acknowledging and witnessing their emotions is so important. And why it makes such a difference when we help them to process and release those emotions that are no longer relevant to their life. Besides helping them, this work will also help you see how your own emotional state influences your animal as well. The bond you and your animals share can extend deeply into both your and their lives.

Invisible emotions can be even more powerful than what we see.

Let me tell you about my horse Ozzie and how he had to deal with his emotions. Ozzie is retired and I found him a home where he can learn to be a therapy horse to help others deal with their emotions. The trainer that initially started working with him had good intentions, but she

had her own control, anger, insecurity issues which started to impact how Ozzie behaved. He became more nippy, resistant and not controlling himself as he used to. First, I got a new trainer to work with him and then checked in with him. What I discovered is a range of emotions – some his and some from the previous trainer. Some of the emotions he was carrying were, anger, frustration, fear, anxiety, stress, and grief. He had also developed an ulcer, so we had to put him on medication, which I feel is a result of the anxiety and frustration. Ozzie is also the type of horse that would tend to hold in his emotions, so they had to go somewhere, and ended up as an ulcer. Since the clearing and energy balancing, he has returned to his more relaxed and happy self.

Why is this question so important? Because our animals are deeply connected to their human, both physically and emotionally.

One of their jobs with us is to help us in our lives by taking on many of our emotional and physical attributes. If you have a dog or cat, this is ok and can be dealt with in easier way. If you have a horse and are actively riding, this can become more challenging. Horses, in particular are so very sensitive and want to help us in many ways. This means, that if they are acting out, have taken on a new habit, are resistant to our cues or commands, or anything else out of the ordinary, it may be a sign that they have some old emotions or old beliefs that are ready to be cleared or released. Again, they can be a combination of their own emotions or the emotions of the people that work with them.

It is important to remember that old unexpressed or repressed experiences or emotions have to go somewhere.

Ideally, if addressed initially, they are released and cleared from the body. If not, they can settle somewhere in the body and could become a more serious issue or disease. Think of what your

horse has gone through to get to you. All the different owners, experiences (good and bad), moving to a new location, etc. All of these contribute to the horse’s wellbeing and overall health.

I have done many sessions on dogs and cats who have been adopted after some form of abandonment, abuse, trauma, rejection, fear, etc., and the difference they experience after clearing those emotions is huge. They become a different animal – more confident, happy, relaxed and comfortable with their new people. And the best part is, no medications or frustration from their person. Just realizing this can really help your horse or dog relax and trust you more as they can sense and feel your awareness.

The other part of balancing this whole equation is what is going on with you, the human, emotionally when you are with your horse or dog.

They can sense and feel everything going on with you, usually before you are even aware of it. They are that sensitive. Especially as a rider, when you are on your horse, they can feel your emotions through your reins, seat, legs, body, etc. For example – You have had a bad, stressful day at work or home, and all you want to do is go to the barn. But when you get there, your

horse can feel your tension, stress and maybe anger underneath the happiness you are showing them at the barn. They are wondering how to deal with those repressed emotions. Depending on how sensitive your horse is will determine how well they can handle it. They will first attempt to take them on themselves to help you, but if they are really heavy, the horse may start to act out a bit as a way to release those emotions and to let you know that you need to become aware of them and do something about

them. Look back on past times when your horse did something odd or acted out, and see if there was anything you were dealing with that day.

This whole dynamic of energy and emotion is what I call Mirroring. Your animal is mirroring you emotionally — and sometimes even physically — to help you. The good news is that this can be resolved with some energy medicine sessions. I am always amazed at how

grateful the animal is to let go of those old emotions and to help you feel better as well. They are here to help you in so many ways, and this is one of the biggest ways.

Please contact me for a FREE 20-minute consultation to discuss this further and learn how you can help both you and your animal live a life free of the past and old emotions and beliefs. Your animal will thank you by being the love they are!!

HOW CANINE ZEN HELPS YOU AND YOUR DOG THRIVE

Picture this: after a long day, you’re ready to relax or have some fun, but your dog seems anything but calm. Maybe they’re pacing, barking, or displaying signs of distress when you try to leave the house. These moments can feel overwhelming, leaving you unsure of how to help your dog feel more relaxed.

If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Many dog guardians face these challenges daily. The good news is that it doesn’t have to stay this way. I’m Stephanie, the founder of Canine Zen, and I’m here to help you and your dog calm the chaos, creating a home where both of you can thrive.

A Philosophy Grounded in Calm and Trust

At Canine Zen, I believe that dogs, like humans, thrive in environments built on trust and understanding. This is why my approach centers on science-based, positive reinforcement methods. These techniques foster a strong, healthy bond between you and your dog—without fear, pain, or punishment.

Dogs communicate through body language and behavior, and sometimes the messages they’re sending tell us they’re anxious or overwhelmed. Rather than using outdated methods that suppress these behaviors temporarily, I focus on changing your dog’s emotional response to triggers. The result? A dog that feels more secure and calm, and a guardian who understands their needs better.

It’s not just about changing behaviors— it’s about creating a life where both you and your dog can find peace and harmony. My mission is to help you both navigate challenges with compassion, trust, and patience, creating a lasting bond that goes beyond just following cues.

The Services I Offer

At Canine Zen, I specialize in helping dogs who struggle with anxiety, fear, and unwanted behaviors that disrupt daily life. Every dog is unique, and so are their challenges, which is why I offer a variety of services tailored to meet individual needs:

Separation Anxiety Programs

One of the most common concerns I address is separation anxiety—a condition that leaves both dogs and their guardians feeling stressed and helpless. Whether your dog barks, howls, or becomes destructive when left alone, my separation anxiety programs are designed to provide solutions that address the root cause of their anxiety.

Through gradual desensitization and creating positive associations with being alone, I’ll help your dog feel secure and confident when you’re not around.

Behavior Modification for Fearful or Reactive Dogs

Fear and reactivity can manifest in different ways, from hiding or trembling to growling or lunging. These behaviors are often a dog’s way of saying they’re uncomfortable or scared. My behavior modification program focuses on building your dog’s confidence and reducing their stress in everyday situations. Using positive reinforcement, I work with you to identify triggers and help your dog develop healthier, more relaxed responses.

Why Dog Guardians Choose Canine Zen

You might wonder, “Why should I invest in training for my dog?” The answer is simple: addressing behavioral concerns early on not only improves your dog’s quality of life but also strengthens the bond you share. When a dog’s anxiety or fear is left untreated, it can lead to

more serious behavioral issues down the road. By understanding the root cause of these behaviors, you’re not just solving a problem—you’re giving your dog the tools to cope with the world around them in a healthy way.

Working with Canine Zen means working with someone who understands the unique emotional needs of your dog. I don’t believe in a one-sizefits-all approach. Every program is personalized, considering your dog’s individual temperament, history, and environment. I offer flexible options that fit into your busy life.

Dog guardians often tell me they feel a sense of relief when they finally understand what their dog is trying to communicate. My approach doesn’t just teach your dog how to behave—it helps you understand why they’re acting a certain way and how you can help them feel more at ease.

A Calmer, More Harmonious Future

Imagine what life could look like with

Creating Calm and Connection:

a calmer, more content dog. No more worrying about leaving them alone. No more frustration with excessive barking or reactive behavior on walks. Instead, you have a dog who trusts you, feels safe in your home, and looks to you for guidance when they’re unsure.

It’s never too late—or too early—to start building this kind of relationship with your dog. Whether they’re a young puppy just beginning their journey or an older dog who’s developed some tough habits, there’s always room for growth and understanding.

Your Journey Starts Here

Your dog’s behavior doesn’t have to be a source of stress. At Canine Zen, I’m here to guide you and your dog through this journey of transformation, creating

a peaceful, trusting relationship that benefits both of you. Whether you’re dealing with separation anxiety, excessive barking, or fearful behavior, I’m ready to help you find solutions that last.

Canine Zen isn’t just about training— it’s about understanding, connection, and creating harmony in the home. With my personalized approach, your dog will not only learn new behaviors

but also gain confidence and emotional resilience. I look forward to helping you and your dog find peace, joy, and balance in your everyday lives. You, too can have results like this: “My dog and I recently completed a virtual course with Stephanie. She was great to work with and significantly helped with my dog’s excessive barking and made her overall more confident. The exercises we learned have helped tremendously and we will

DEVELOPING A FEED PROGRAM FOR YOUR HORSE

When choosing feeds and supplements for your horse, you have an endless array of options to choose from. Understanding your horse’s activity level, body condition score, life stage, and any health conditions that should be addressed nutritionally outside of standard daily requirements is important. There are many ways to achieve a well-rounded balanced diet for your horse. Which way will be the best for you?

Let’s start with looking at your horse as an individual. What are their unique needs?

Evaluation Check List

• What does the horse weigh?

• Are they an easy keeper?

• Do they need to lose some weight?

• Do they need to gain weight?

• Could their topline improve?

• Can the horse still chew hay well –no evidence of quidding or missing teeth?

• Any health concerns like equine metabolic syndrome, PPID (Cushing’s), history of laminitis or founder, insulin dysregulation, fecal water syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, etc.

• Does the horse have any undiagnosed or unexplainable sensitive GI issues?

• Is the horse afflicted with any muscle conditions like PSSM, HYPP, MYHM, etc.

• What is their activity level?

• Maintenance

• Light

• Moderate

• Heavy

• Intense

• Sufficient energy for their job

• OR are they lethargic under saddle, slow recovery, sore after work for prolonged periods, etc?

• Is the horse’s job more aerobic or anaerobic-type exercise?

• Does the horse have a history of gastric ulcers?

The diet can be a great tool in navigating some challenges we see with horses. Once we have a better understanding of our horse’s needs from the checklist, we can begin selecting a feed that fits their requirements. For this next step, we need to understand more about the different kinds of feeds and supplements available to choose from. Look at the Purpose Statement on the feed tag to better understand what kind of feed you are looking at. This will read something

like “a concentrated vitamin mineral supplement” or “a complete feed for senior horses,” as examples.

A complete feed can completely replace hay in the diet. This will have a higher feed rate of around 1.5-2% of the horse’s body weight or can be used strategically as a hay stretcher in the diet. A complete feed is more than just a hay pellet. It will contain added vitamins and minerals your horse needs but must be fed at a rate that the daily requirements are met. A hay pellet or cube is not a complete feed unless the feed tag has added nutrition under the Ingredients List. Just remember, complete feeds must be fed at a higher volume to achieve the benefits of the fortification (added vitamins, minerals, etc.). The average 1,000-pound horse will need to be fed 15-20 pounds per day of a complete feed if replacing

hay in the diet. When feeding to compliment hay, ensure you are feeding enough to meet the nutrition minimums for the horse.

A ration balancer is a concentrated vitamin and mineral supplement with a low feed rate of 1-2 pounds per day. Think of this like your daily vitamin/ mineral capsule. This is not a source of fuel or extra calories for your horse. Ration balancers make a great choice for retired horses at maintenance, easy keepers, or horses on pasture that do not need extra calories but still need a baseline for their daily vitamins and minerals.

Fortified feeds & grains are commercial feeds that will have a low to moderate feed rate (for example, 4-8 pounds) and are a great way to supply extra calories & additional nutrition for the horse. Feeds are fortified differently for maintenance versus performance, so be sure to choose the right one for your horse. Cheaper grains, like COB or rice bran, may not be fortified at all. It is important to review the feed tag and see what exactly you’re buying and how fortified it is.

Supplements are top-dress products that are fed in addition to a ration to

help close any nutrition gaps left after considering forage and feed choices. They can be marketed around targeted improvements like hoof quality, skin and coat, joint support, muscle building, calming, immunity boosting, etc. These are the tubs of powder, pellets, or liquid that you add to your grain bucket. With a solid feed foundation, supplements may or may not be necessary.Elk Grove Milling, Inc. is best known for their equine feed line called Stable Mix™. REDISCOVER THE FUN OF A SHOWCATION

Each season since its opening in 2015 the Paso Robles Horse Park (Paso Park) has progressed further towards its goal of being recognized as one of the top facilities to host the sport of show jumping. Its unique management structure brings the horse show production and the facility maintenance team together under one umbrella; this results in an experience for competitors and spectators that is unparalleled throughout the region.

What makes this facility standout from others is the way it has embraced and celebrated the unique experience found only in Paso Robles. “The Park began as a vision of Linda Starkman’s for equestrian enthusiasts and competitors.”

Park Director, Amanda Diefenderfer commented, “She has taken that vision and brought to life a facility that appeals directly to the needs of show jumping competitors but also brings the top talent of the sport here to the Central Coast for the local community to watch and enjoy.”

This Fall, the Paso Park will host 6 total shows including two locally recognized schooling shows, two regionally rated B Shows, and two nationally rated Classic Shows. The Classics, held for two weeks in in November, attract the top show jumping competitors from throughout the western US.
