PUTTING THE HORSE FIRST: THE HEART OF EQUINE BODYWORK

At Full Circle Integrated Equine Therapy, my philosophy is simple: the horse comes first. Every touch, every technique, and every interaction is guided by the horse’s needs, responses, and well-being. Whether working with high-level performance horses, retired companions, or anything in between, my approach prioritizes listening, respecting, and honoring what the horse communicates.

In a world where human goals and expectations often dictate a horse’s daily life, whether in competition, training, or even casual riding, bodywork provides a space where the horse’s needs take precedence. This article will explore the importance of putting the horse first in equine bodywork, how to recognize what the horse is telling us, and ways to integrate a horse-first mindset into daily interactions.

Listening to the Horse: The Foundation of Bodywork

Horses are incredibly expressive creatures. They communicate through subtle body language, posture, facial expressions, and even shifts in energy. However, humans often overlook or misinterpret these signals, especially when focused on an agenda or a specific outcome. In equine bodywork, the goal is not to “fix” the horse but to facilitate release, relaxation, and improved function by working with, not against, their natural responses.

Signs of Comfort and Discomfort

By tuning into a horse’s cues, we can better understand their experience during a session. Here are some key signs that a horse is responding positively:

• Softening eyes and ears – Indicates relaxation and trust.

• Yawning, licking, and chewing –Signs of nervous system release and processing.

• Lowering the head and neck –A sign of physical and mental relaxation.

• Shifting weight, sighing, or rolling –Demonstrates release of tension.

Conversely, signs of discomfort or resistance should never be ignored:

first is recognizing that every horse has a different threshold for touch, pressure, and interaction. What works for one horse may be overwhelming for another.

My practice focuses on gentle techniques that encourage the horse to participate rather than endure. For example, instead of applying deep pressure immediately, I start with light touch and wait for feedback. If a horse moves away, I don’t force the interaction, I allow them to process and re-engage when ready.

This method is particularly effective in cases of trauma, injury, or extreme sensitivity. Many horses, especially those coming from stressful environments, need time to trust. By respecting their space and responses, rapport is built and an experience is created that feels safe and beneficial rather than invasive.

The Role of Patience and Stillness

One of the most valuable tools in equine bodywork isn’t a specific technique…it’s patience. Unlike conventional massage or therapy that focuses on “doing,” equine bodywork often requires “being” with the horse, allowing space for relaxation and release to occur naturally.

Holding a gentle touch in a key area and waiting for the horse’s nervous system to process is often more effective than applying forceful techniques. This approach not only encourages deeper releases but also fosters a sense of partnership. The horse isn’t just a passive recipient; they are an active participant in their own healing.

• Tension in the muzzle and nostrils – Can signal stress or irritation.

• Bracing muscles or stiffness –Indicates guarding or discomfort.

• Pinning ears, swishing tail, or moving away – Possible indicators of discomfort or pain.

By paying attention to these signals, we can adjust our approach to honor the horse’s experience rather than impose our own expectations.

Adjusting Our Approach: Working With the Horse’s Comfort Level

A core principle of putting the horse

Integrating a Horse-First Mindset Beyond Bodywork

Putting the horse first extends beyond bodywork sessions, it’s a philosophy that should be incorporated into all aspects of horsemanship. Here are some ways to apply this mindset daily:

1. Rethink Training and Performance Goals. While competition and training are important for many horse owners, they should never come at the expense of the horse’s well-being. If a horse is struggling with a movement, experiencing discomfort, or showing

signs of stress, it’s crucial to pause and reassess. Are we pushing them too hard? Are we addressing underlying physical restrictions? Adjusting our expectations to meet the horse where they are rather than where we want them to be fosters long-term soundness and willingness.

2. Prioritize Recovery and Rest. Horses, like humans, need time to recover after physical exertion. Bodywork, turnout, proper nutrition, and adequate downtime are just as important as training sessions. Too often, horses are asked to perform repeatedly without sufficient recovery, leading to chronic tension and injury. By tuning into their needs and respecting their bodies, we support their longevity and overall health.

3. Use Bodywork as a Preventative Tool. Many horse owners turn to bodywork only after an issue arises, but regular

sessions can prevent many common problems before they escalate. Just as athletes receive routine physical therapy to maintain peak performance, horses benefit from ongoing bodywork to stay balanced, comfortable, and relaxed. Investing in their physical well-being before problems arise ensures a longer, healthier career.

4. Observe Without Expectation. Sometimes, the best thing we can do for our horses is simply observe them without an agenda. Spend time watching them in the pasture, noticing how they move, interact, and rest. The more we familiarize ourselves with their natural habits and posture, the easier it becomes to recognize when something is off.

Conclusion: A Commitment to the Horse

Therapy, my mission is to put the horse first…always! Every session is approached with respect, patience, and a deep understanding that horses are not just animals to be worked on; they are sentient beings with thoughts, emotions, and preferences.

By shifting our perspective to prioritize their needs over our expectations, we create a relationship based on trust

and mutual respect. Whether through bodywork, training, or everyday care, putting the horse first isn’t just a practice, it’s a philosophy that leads to happier, healthier, and more willing partners.

RELIEF FROM EMOTIONAL TRAUMA AND TURMOIL FOR YOU AND YOUR ANIMAL

One thing we can all agree with, is that 2025 started with a proverbial BANG! Right out of the gate we had the worst fires and destruction anyone has seen in this state ever. Not to mention the disruption and chaos that ensured. Also, the change in our political landscape is also creating much angst and stress in everyone for both overlapping and separate reasons.

I am going to share with you today a way that can help you and your animals let go of these overwhelming emotional burdens. I want to say upfront that your animals are suffering as much or more as people are, especially if they had to be moved, relocated, got lost or hurt in the fires, and are left not knowing where you are and what has happened to you. Remember, they are incredibly linked and connected with you physically and emotionally, so all this upset and change in their lives impacts them deeply. Also, even though this event happened several weeks or months ago now, these emotions can get trapped or suppressed depending on their intensity and the individual situation. It is never too late to clear and release these emotions and memories. Old, trapped emotions can often lead to some form of illness if not released, so the sooner the better.

My Experience

I personally was not physically impacted by the fires, but one got closer than I ever thought possible. That caused me to have to seriously think about evacuating, both myself and a dog, plus my elderly Mother and her dog who also might be impacted. To say it was stressful and overwhelming was mild. Luckily, we did not have to evacuate, and our part of town was untouched. The difficult part was what I felt the next day as the impact

of all the destruction (I had many friends and colleagues who lost everything) and reality settled in. I could really feel myself spiraling out of control from all the emotions I was experiencing, both good and bad. I also started having feelings of survival guilt on top of everything.

Luckily, I have a powerfully practical energy resource called The Emotion Code that enabled me to regain my emotional balance and sanity. As a note, I could see my dog was starting to stress out as well from all that I was going through, and the toll he felt in him trying to help me. Using this energy resource, I helped him as well, for which he was so grateful.

The Emotion Code

I recently achieved my certification as a practitioner in this wonderful modality called the Emotion Code, which integrates holistically with other longtime modalities and animal communication work I regularly provide. This is a simple method to clear all sorts of trapped emotions (old, inherited, shared, absorbed, prenatal and current ones) that can get stuck in the body. Under normal situations, we can usually experience and then allow the emotion to leave, but in stressful or traumatic situations, those emotions can get trapped in the body. If that happens when we— or the animal— are young, trauma can get trapped in the body, often specific body parts, and can’t get out on its own. The energy of the body adapts and tries to ignore it, until it can’t. That is when physical problems can start to pop up.

This is what one client said after I worked on her as relates to the fire situation:

“This is my friend Carolyn; she is amazing and has helped me and my dogs in so many ways. I spoke to her earlier this week for a session about past emotional drama. When we started, my chest felt heavy with emotions, at about an 8, and after our session, it dropped to a 3. Today, that feeling I had in my chest is gone.

We talked today as a follow-up, and

During the fires horses were lost or taken in hurried evacuations and owners are still desparate to find them

my anxiety symptoms changed with all these fires. She asked how I was feeling, which was a loaded question. I feel like I’m jumping out of my skin with anxiety for what people are going through, partly because I am also an empath and can feel

other people’s emotions.

After talking and with Carolyn doing what she does, I feel so much better.”

How Our Animals are Affected by Trapped Emotions

Dogs and horses are especially sensitive beings, and trapped emotions can impact them in different ways. The first, most obvious way is in their behaviors. They never act out just to annoy us, but rather to convey that something is not right in their world. Many horses, like dogs, may go through several owners and situations – some good and some snot so good, or even traumatic. They tend to hide it pretty well, as is their nature to survive, but it comes out in their behaviors, especially if they are feeling threatened, scared, or overwhelmed.

The second way that animals are affected by emotions is by taking on their owners’

emotions. They do this to help us (as they see it is their job to help and protect us) and to bring to our attention that we need to deal with our own emotions, so they don’t have to carry them. And as I mentioned earlier, if these emotions are not released or addressed, they can turn into more serious physical issues. With horses in particular, you are working with them as a partner, so both parties need to address their emotions to create the best partnership and connection while riding. Help them by taking care of yourself on all levels. This will improve the relationship and health of you both.

Special Offer

I have a special offer for anyone who has been affected by the fires, who could use an Emotional reboot. I am offering a FREE Emotion Code Session (animal or person) to experience this energy work and to help get you out of emotional overwhelm and any stress dealing with recovery. BRIDGING COMMUNICATION AND COMFORT FOR ANXIOUS DOGS

In a world where technology increasingly connects us, the field of canine training is embracing innovative approaches that bring together convenience, expert guidance, and a truly personalized experience. I’ve seen firsthand how virtual training transforms the lives of anxious dogs and their pet parents.

The Benefits of Virtual Training

Enhanced Communication

One of the most exciting aspects of virtual training is the unique opportunity it provides for open, direct communication between the trainer, pet parent, and dog. By conducting sessions online, we create a space where everyone can observe and learn together in real time. This approach allows me to offer personalized advice as you interact with your dog, reinforcing gentle cues that promote understanding rather than fear. When a pet parent sees their dog respond positively to a welltimed cue in the familiar surroundings of home, the bond strengthens—and so does your ability to communicate clearly with one another.

Convenience and Comfort

Traditional training sessions often require travel, appointments at designated locations, and the stress of unfamiliar settings—all of which can be particularly challenging for fearful or anxious dogs. Virtual training removes these barriers. By choosing to work from home, you create a learning environment where your dog feels safe and secure.

This comfort is especially beneficial for dogs that have experienced stress in new or crowded environments.

In addition to reducing anxiety, the convenience of virtual training means that you can schedule sessions around your busy life. No more long drives or waiting in traffic—just a simple video call from your living room, backyard, or even a favorite quiet spot at home. This level of ease not only saves time but also helps to reinforce the idea that learning can be an enjoyable part of your daily routine.

Access to Expert Guidance

One of the most significant advantages of virtual training is that it opens the door to expert guidance regardless of geographical limitations. Whether you live in a bustling city or a remote area, you can connect with trainers who have specialized experience, especially in addressing issues like separation anxiety and fear-based behaviors. This means that you’re not limited to the resources available in your local community— you can work with someone who

truly understands your dog’s unique challenges and strengths.

Clearing the Air: Navigating Common Misconceptions and Finding Solutions

Common Misconceptions

Despite its many advantages, virtual training often faces skepticism. Many pet parents worry that the absence of in-person interaction might compromise the effectiveness of training. It’s a common misconception that without physical presence, the bond between trainer and dog can’t be as strong, or that subtle body language cues might be missed over a screen. However, technology today allows for high-quality video sessions where nearly every gesture and cue is clearly visible.

Others may be concerned that technical issues—such as connectivity problems or unfamiliarity with video conferencing tools—could hinder the training process. While these challenges are real, they can be easily managed with a bit of preparation and patience. In my

experience, most pet parents quickly adapt to the digital format and soon realize that the benefits far outweigh any initial hurdles.

Practical Solutions for Potential Challenges

To ensure a smooth virtual training experience, I recommend a few simple steps. First, test your video and audio setup before the session to avoid any last-minute glitches. Find a quiet, well-lit space where you and your dog can focus without distractions. If you encounter any technical difficulties, rest assured that we can troubleshoot together.

For pet parents new to this format, it might feel a bit different at first. However, remember that every training session is a learning opportunity, not just for your dog, but for you as well. With each virtual session, you’ll become more comfortable with the process and more confident in your ability to support your dog’s progress. And remember, I’m here every step of the way to provide guidance, answer questions, and adjust strategies as needed.

Virtual Training:

Real-Life Impact and Success Stories

While every dog is unique, I’ve witnessed remarkable transformations through virtual training. One pet parent shared how her anxious dog, once overwhelmed by crowded parks and unfamiliar environments, began to thrive in a series of home-based sessions. By working together online, we were able to implement simple, effective techniques that gradually reduced the dog’s anxiety. The pet parent reported not only improved behavior but also a deeper bond and a newfound understanding of her dog’s cues and needs.

Taking the Leap: Begin Your Journey to a Confident, Calm Companion

Virtual training offers an innovative path to address the challenges faced by anxious and fearful dogs. By leveraging

enhanced communication, the comfort of a familiar environment, and access to specialized expertise, this approach transforms how we connect with our canine companions. It’s a method that respects the individuality of each dog, meeting them where they are and fostering a positive, stress-free learning experience.

In our ever-connected world, the opportunity to learn, grow, and communicate is just a click away. Virtual

training isn’t merely a substitute for in-person sessions—it’s a dynamic, accessible, and deeply personal way to help your dog overcome anxiety and build a future filled with trust, understanding, and joy.

If you’re a pet parent grappling with behavioral issues and seeking a fresh, supportive way to help your dog, I invite you to consider the benefits of virtual training. Embrace the convenience, clarity, and expert guidance that this

WITH HOMEGROWN HORSEMANSHIP AND PERSONALIZED CARE, ISABEL SEMPE IS CHANGING THE SUPPLEMENT GAME

With so many supplement companies available to horse owners, it can be difficult to choose the right one for your horse. To make that decision easier, Isabel Sempe, owner and founder of Natural Equine Essentials, spent several years researching and developing which all-natural supplements work best for common equine ailments.

Sempe was born into a multigenerational horse breeding family from Honduras. Her father bred Quarter, Andalusian, and Peruvian horses and is one of the founders of the Peruvian Horse Association of Honduras.

“My dad was one of the first to import world class horses from South and North America into Honduras, for breeding and competition purposes,” Sempe says. “He was very involved in the daily care, making his own bran mash and growing his own grade ‘A’ Alfalfa hay for the horses.”

She spent her childhood on their 2,000acre equine breeding, agriculture, and dairy farm. She observed and learned the inner workings of the farm and gained firsthand knowledge of the many issues regarding raising, breeding, and caring for horses in the family business. With 80 horses on the property, vets were always there, and their farrier lived on the property. With this set up, she was able to absorb information from experts in their field through out her early years.

Sempe started riding horses at six years old. She has competed internationally in show jumping, dressage, eventing,

and Peruvian Paso Horse competitions. At an early age she learned English riding through her aunt, Titi Mills, a well-known trainer who represented Honduras in the Central American and Caribbean Games in show jumping, winning two silver medals.

“Titi showed me how horsemanship, discipline, hard work and attention to detail pay off in the long run for your horse and yourself as a rider,” Sempe says.

Strict and Disciplined

Sempe married and, through her husband’s job, moved and lived in four different countries in the span of 15 years. She was able to make friends and train with various Olympic trainers, well-known veterinarians, and farriers who are still close friends and parts of her vast equine network. This network and experience in different regions expanded her knowledge and provided support from accomplished equine professionals around the world.

“One of my trainers, Oswaldo MendezHerbruger (three time Olympic rider) was really intense,” says Sempe. “He said to me, ‘I am going to train you and take you to the Central American Games on your mare in three years.’”

Sempe describes herself as disciplined and strict, but this training program was one of the most intense she had ever gone through—and almost wore her down.

“I was crying all the time,” says Sempe. “It was very hard work.”

But that hard work paid off and in 2013, she was a member of the first eventing team to represent Honduras in the Central American Games.

“At 35 years old, I learned that it is never too late to start something,” says Sempe.

“When you work hard and that horse is your partner, you understand each other. You learn to read each other. What they’re thinking, what they’re feeling, it impacts you.”

Soon after, her husband’s job took their family to Wellington, FL. While it was a very different environment than what she was used to, she was introduced to the world of supplements…and hasn’t looked back since.

Creating a Product

Two of Sempe’s personal horses traveled from Chile, South America, to Florida with her, including her daughter’s horse who had a tough time with the change.

“He had allergies, got a colic from eating sand, had summer sores. You name it, he got it,” says Sempe.

She tried popular supplements, including natural supplements that were available at the time, with no results. This led her to dig into her network and research what natural ingredients would help her horses. Among those she consulted was a family friend who is also

a renowned veterinary pharmacologist and toxicologist. She consulted certified labs and various FEI veterinarians.

She was able to create products that not only helped her horses recover, but made them healthier and more responsive. Her close friends witnessed the quick and amazing change in her horses and asked if they could try her products on their own horses. They were suffering from digestive issues.

They started a trial supplement program under the close supervision of their veterinarian who evaluated their horses on a monthly basis. After a trial of 25 of their horses, all their coats were now shiny, and the horses with leaky gut now had normal stool. All the horses looked healthier, behaved better, and had noticeable improvements in gut health. To date they remain loyal clients and friends.

Growing Her Business

Since the creation of her first product, Sempe dove into discovering other needs in the market and filling them with natural supplements and products that focus on those needs.

Her products include complete gastric health and joint support supplements to electrolytes and fly control plus grooming products. Sempe works with FEI vets to ensure that all products have no banned ingredients and are FEI and USEF show-safe.

Sempe prides herself in creating strategic partnerships with all her clients, making sure that she listens to their needs and helps their horses through her supplements to become healthier, happier, and stronger through her unique understanding and lifelong experience with horses and the equine world. Natural Equine Essentials is a proud member of the renowned National Animal Supplement Council (NASC).

All their supplements and grooming products are 100% natural and are made in Natural Equine Essential’s warehouse facilities in Kentucky.

EASTWOOD RANCH FOUNDATION

A Beacon of Hope for Animals in Agoura Hills

Nestled in the heart of Agoura Hills, California, the Eastwood Ranch Foundation Rescue and Adoption Center stands as a testament to compassion and dedication towards animal welfare. Founded by actor and animal advocate Alison Eastwood, this non-profit organization has been a sanctuary for countless needy animals.

Unwanted dogs and cats end up their final days, weeks, and months in crowded and noisy so-called shelters (really, they are jails for the innocent) void of comfort and tender care. This is not the most inviting environment to greet potential adopters. Abused and neglected animals will cower from visitors, or they may show extreme anxiousness and hyperactivity – either way, they are typically destroyed to make room for more inmates.

When a pet owner dies without appointing a willing caregiver, the pet's fate is especially perilous. In one instance, when a deceased person left behind two small dogs, a family member surrendered the animals to a high-kill shelter that would euthanize them - no waiting period. It was this reality that persuaded Eastwood to do something epic. "How could someone simply discard a beloved pet that way," she exclaims.

After a years-long quest, what happened next was to build and finally open in 2024 the state-of-the-art Rescue and Adoption Center located at 28260 Dorothy Drive, Agoura Hills. This facility is designed to provide a safe and nurturing environment for rescued animals. The center is open to the public from Wednesday to Sunday, allowing potential adopters to meet and interact with the animals.

The Eastwood Ranch Foundation Rescue and Adoption Center rescues domestic animals from high-kill shelters across Southern California. Their mission is to save these animals and provide them with the necessary medical care, love, and support until they find their forever homes. The foundation also collaborates with other vetted local rescues to maximize their impact.

The foundation's adoption process is thorough, ensuring that each animal is placed in a loving and suitable home. They offer meet-and-greet sessions for families with existing pets to ensure compatibility and a smooth transition.

Eastwood Ranch Foundation thrives on community support. They offer various ways for individuals to get involved, from adopting and fostering pets to volunteering at the center. The foundation relies heavily on donations to sustain its operations and continue its life-saving work.

Beyond rescue and adoption, the foundation is deeply involved in animal advocacy. They work tirelessly to raise awareness about animal welfare issues, educate the public, and campaign for better treatment of animals nationwide. Their efforts extend beyond local rescue, aiming to create a broader impact on animal welfare.

The foundation has numerous success stories, each highlighting the transformative power of rescue and adoption. Animals that once faced uncertain futures in high-kill shelters are now thriving in loving homes, thanks to the dedicated efforts of the Eastwood Ranch Foundation.

There are many ways to support the Eastwood Ranch Foundation. Whether through donations, volunteering, or

DESIGNING A DIET FOR YOUR HORSE

The saga of spring and horse ownership… brisk mornings, fresh horses, and getting covered in shedding hair during grooming sessions. With all the time spent grooming for a lustrous coat, it is also a wonderful opportunity to check in on your horse’s current health and wellness status. Taking a multifaceted approach to your horse’s wellness can lead to a better understanding of areas your horse might be struggling with and bring to light appropriate areas that need adjustment. Some methods of scoring a horse’s body composition that complement Body Condition Scoring (BCS) are Cresty Neck Scoring, Muscling Evaluation, Muscle Atrophy Scoring System (MASS), evaluating their topline, and reassessing their activity level.

Body Condition Scoring

The Henneke Body Condition Scoring system, developed in 1983 by Don Henneke, PhD, is considered the industry's golden standard for monitoring the development, or lack of, adipose tissue in 6 key areas on the horse’s body. While Body condition scoring can relatively be visually assessed by a well-trained eye, it is best to have a hands-on approach. Ideally, you would palpate the areas to get a feel for the adipose tissue or any present bony structures. The 6 areas that are evaluated

are the crest of the neck, withers, behind the shoulder, rib cage area, the loin area of the back, and tailhead. The best way to break this down is to approach each section separately and record the number you feel best represents what adiposity you are feeling (or not). Once you have evaluated all 6 areas, you add them all together and then divide by 6, averaging the overall BCS score.

The reason why we want to monitor a horse’s BSC is to ensure that it stays at a healthy or ideal score. Too much adiposity, or fat accumulation, can begin to have detrimental effects on the horse’s health status. While utilizing a BCS system to monitor your horse’s condition is a key factor in a wellness strategy, it doesn’t define an actual body weight, nor does it define quality muscling or topline. It is important to note that this Henneke system strictly focuses on adipose tissue. Conformation can cause some pitfalls when evaluating a horse’s BCS. Remember to focus specifically on the 6 key areas and ignore things like high withers, hunter bumps, roach back, or ewe neck features. These can mislead your eye and influence a score that won’t

be as precise as if you focus strictly on the adiposity in the area. As a note, donkey body condition scoring is done with a different system, and mule owners will want to consider the 2 methods for determining their mule’s condition.

Weight

Many factors contribute to a horse’s weight. Breed, class, environment, feeding program, and management practices are some factors that can affect a horse’s potential to be underweight, a healthy weight, or overweight. The best way to determine the weight of a horse is to put them on a scale. There are other methods, like weight tapes, the Healthy Horse app, or measurements that can help calculate a horse’s weight when a scale isn’t available, but these can be subjective and somewhat inaccurate. While a weight guestimate is handy information, it does not give a full indication of the horse’s health or wellness status. Pairing this information with the horse’s body condition score and other methods gives some trajectory to creating an appropriate diet plan for the horse.

Activity Level

Understanding the horse's activity level is important to know when choosing the right feeds for them. We also need to know when this activity level changes, so we can make proper adjustments. If horses are going into training, or going on layup, we have a change in nutrition requirements to adjust for. We also need

Diamond R Quarter Horses head trainer, Brandt Ross with their stud, Togo, and pup, Tuck.
Ross Photography, LLc

to consider an electrolyte program if the horse is going to be sweating significantly more than the current program accounts for.

The National Research Council (NRC) defines activity levels for horses at maintenance, or working/in training at light, moderate, heavy, or intense activity levels. As a horse works through physically demanding levels on intensity, we need to make sure we match their diet with the proper amount of energy, protein, vitamins, and minerals, while maintaining electrolyte and hydration balance.

LA EQUESTRIAN CENTER BECOMES A REFUGE DURING FIRES

The Los Angeles Equestrian Center is a 75-acre property in the heart of Griffith Park and Burbank/Glendale Rancho Community. We are home to over 400 horses that board here and serve the community with 20 horse shows each year, a riding school on site, and special events like movies under the stars, weddings, conferences, and concerts.

On Tuesday, January 7, 2025, as the winds blew and LA fires raged, The Los Angeles Equestrian Center was activated by the Office of Emergency Management and the LA Fire Department as an Official Evacuation Site for horses and large animals. Trailers of horses, pigs, goats, sheep, and donkeys started arriving, some with their owners and some without. Within the first 24 hours we had 300 animals and by the end of that week we reached capacity at 408 evacuated animals.

The LA City Animal Services team along with the center’s management team, site crew, and multiple community volunteers began getting all the animals logged and safely into stalls with fresh hay, water, and bedding. Truckloads of donated feed, hay, shavings, and supplies started pouring in right away as well as pallets of carrots, water and snacks for the evacuees and support teams.

More than 1,500 volunteers served during the few weeks and our food and beverage team cooked more than 2,000 meals. Local community members and businesses donated doughnuts, pizzas, sandwiches, and even special vegan meals. We stood together as a community to provide a safe place and refuge from the storm for those fleeing the fires, many who had lost everything.
