We think Steve Seiran (SeiranPhotography.com) had fun with this shoot. Steve took the pic in front of the barn of a gorgeous residence in Old Agoura (a popular equestrian community in LA County). Mares Texas and Dakota were rescued from Kaufman Horses, purported to be a kill pen in Texas. Our great friend Emily poured out her heart and pocketbook to cure Texas of EPM and give both horses foundation training. Dakota needs a forever home - call Nona to hear the whole story and inquire! Emily rescued Buck, the cattle dog, from the San Bernardino animal shelter minutes before euthanization. These animals show what a little TLC and a lot of love can do. Thank you Emily! FULL CIRCLE INTEGRATED EQUINE THERAPY IS HERE TO SUPPORT YOUR HORSES

From my earliest recollection there are two things I have come to understand about myself. First, I will do anything to help others and, second, I am uber competitive. My drive to help others led to a 20+ year career in the fire service. As you can imagine, being a female firefighter wasn’t easy physically or mentally. To maintain my fitness standard, I found inspiration as a competitive athlete but this wasn’t easy on my body or mind. To continue functioning at peak performance (and mostly injury free) I found significant value in sports medicine. Modalities like deep tissue massage, myofascial release, Graston, e-stim therapy, chiropractic, acupuncture, etc. were valuable for rehabilitation from injuries as well as maintenance to keep me going. Practicing yoga, Pilates, meditation, and spending time with my horses has been a key factor in grounding my busy, overachieving mind and helped to relieve the stressors from a very demanding career.

My lifelong passion for animals, specifically horses, led to me competing with my horses. Since college, I dreamed of achieving that next level in the show pen, but life usually had other plans. As my career settled, the horses I planned to compete with developed underlying health issues that needed to be addressed first. Additionally, the needs of my growing children and the needs of their horses always came before mine putting my ability to show further on the backburner.

My kids are now transitioning into young adult life and I’ve had the opportunity to

re-evaluate goals and my true desire to compete with my horses. I have come to realize that the greatest enjoyment I experience is not aiming for that blue ribbon but helping horses feel their best, so they have a greater opportunity to perform at their best and feel their best. I found that the same modalities that helped me so much throughout my demanding career can be applied to horses to help them feel and perform their best. This, in turn, is a win-win-win for the horses, their owners and myself as it ultimately combines my desire to help others (both two-legged and fourlegged) succeed as a team and makes me feel good knowing I’m doing right by the horse. The difference I see in not only my own horses but my clients horses when they maintain a routine schedule of bodywork treatments is astounding.

My passion for providing exceptional equine services is what led me to open the doors of Full Circle Integrated Equine Therapy. As a lifelong equestrian, I have always been interested in finding ways to improve the health and performance of the horses I work with and offer a range of treatments that promote physical and emotional well-being aimed at helping your horse feel their best.

Equine bodywork improves a horse’s physical well-being, addressing muscle tension, joint mobility, emotional attunement and overall relaxation. For competitive horses, such as those in cowhorse, reining, ranch riding, show jumping, dressage or racing, bodywork helps reduce muscle fatigue, enhance flexibility and improve performance by allowing them to move more freely and recover faster from intense training sessions. It can prevent injuries by ensuring muscles and joints remain in peak condition, while also relieving the stress and tension that can build up from rigorous competition schedules.

For horses turned out to pasture or those that are less active, bodywork is equally beneficial. Even without the demands of competition, horses can develop stiffness, muscle imbalances, or joint discomfort due to past injuries or just as they age naturally. Bodywork promotes

circulation, encourages relaxation and improves mobility, keeping these horses comfortable, healthy and limber as they enjoy their leisure time. In essence, equine bodywork benefits every horse by enhancing their overall equality of life, whether they’re athletes in peak performance or pasture companions living in quiet retirement.

Bodywork treatments are tailored to each horse, focusing on the horse’s unique needs and physical condition including massage, PEMF, acupressure, craniosacral, applied kinesiology, osteopathy and energy work. As a Masterson Method Certified Practitioner, I am a firm believer in the value of working with your horse, not just on your horse, as they

are the primary driver of their own health and healing. I assess each horse individually to determine the best approach, ensuring each session targets specific areas of tension, discomfort, or imbalance. Whether your horse is a high-performance athlete, a recreational partner, or an older companion, the techniques and methods used are customized to support their overall well-

• Promote

being and optimize their comfort and mobility.

In addition to equine bodywork, I also offer services to enhance both your relationship with your horse and your time under saddle by creating a relaxed and responsive horse through movement therapy customized to meet the unique needs of the individual horse and its needs. My goal is to help you gain confidence in your relationship and build confidence with your horse so that you can both feel your very best which will allow the two of you perform at the highest level. I work closely with my clients to develop personalized treatment

plans based on the specific needs and preferences of their horses and I am dedicated to helping both horses and their owners find true connection, relaxation and balance. Your horse’s well-being is my top priority. I believe that owning a horse is a privilege that comes with great responsibility and am committed to delivering outstanding results. I aim to foster a deep understanding and mutual respect between horse and owner and my approach ensures that owners actively participate in the process, allowing them to learn and grow alongside their equine companions. I urge you to reach out today to see what I can do for you and the horses you value the most.

IS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE READY TO HELP VETERINARIANS?

You have probably heard the buzz about artificial intelligence invading our lives via its inclusion in many products that we use. If it is not already in your car, in your favorite web-site or software program, it soon will be. It is also appearing in human-medical products to help doctors with their diagnoses and treatments. So, it should be of no surprise that it has entered the veterinary space as well. There are now a handful of companies selling products driven by artificial intelligence that are being presented to the veterinary community. You might ask your favorite veterinarian if they have tried any of these products or if they are already using one or more.

An interesting use of AI is to aid veterinarians in interpreting radiographs and other images of animals. AI has become very powerful at “understanding” images and can spot anomalies and alert the doctor to areas that should be further investigated. It is prudent, at the current stage of development, to always ensure that the veterinarian is “in the loop” and uses the AI system only as an assistant. AI is not ready to take over the diagnostic duties of your veterinarian.

Our company has developed AI for the task of measuring anatomical structures. Many issues with a patient can be detected via measurement, for example: an enlarged heart, a collapsed trachea, liver too small or enlarged, kidneys too small or enlarged, various measures of elbows and hips, and so on. Our software, called Metron-IQ, acts as an assistant to the veterinarian – freeing him/her of the tedious task of measuring

things within an image. Our system does not diagnose – that is the job of the veterinarian – but the measurements give hard, physical evidence that is extremely useful to aid in finding and backing up the diagnosis. As such, our system is quite different from other AI products which may give a statistical estimate of a particular disease process (e.g. “there is a 72% chance that the patient has pneumonia”) and only provide this kind of fuzzy probability.

Veterinarians are busy. They need to stay efficient, and they need to continually find ways to “up their game,” but they often cannot take the time to look at and evaluate a new technology. For this reason, new AI-based products need to be simple to use, and easy to get started with. AI needs to simplify tasks, not bring more complexity.

To answer the question posed in the title of this article: Yes! There are

practical AI-based tools which can aid the practicing veterinarian or veterinary radiologist. The adoption of such systems will help to improve the lives of our beloved pets.

BUSINESS FEATURE

SMALL TOWN DREAM OF CUSTOM STEEL COVERS

EQ-Wine Covers Co. started out as a small-town dream to sell steel covers. They are sold at a competitive price without compromising quality! The original owners designed their business with customers in mind. With many farm owners & wine lovers in the area— hence the name EQ-wine—it perfectly aligns with Paso Robles, California. They sold one style cover in a few varied sizes and that was great! Little did the owners know that when they sold the business to Rod and Julie Kirby, that they would have bigger ideas.

EQ-Wine Covers is still putting their customers, quality, and pricing first. However, Rod and Julie would like to think that they can cover anything! People are using their steel covers for RVs, boats, patio covers, tractors, mare motels, hay covers, and so much more. You can now get a custom designed cover to fit your needs. If you need it covered, “We’ve got you covered.”

Not sure what you’re looking for? You can find EQ-Wine Covers Co. on Facebook and see what has been made so far! Like the page to stay in touch or see what specials are happening now. If you see the ad, be sure to mention it to get a discount on your order.

The Kirby’s have enjoyed raising their twins in the San Luis Obispo area. Now that they have just graduated high school, they are looking forward to the future. They still enjoy showing livestock, traveling, wakeboarding, and motorcycle riding together. Their son can be seen on job sites working with his dad. Their daughter is often seen “working” on the computer at the office with her mom. Having family and friends to help run the business makes it a true team effort.

Rod loves what he does! Although he enjoys building covers, he does an excellent job visualizing how each cover can be built to fit a customer’s needs. When talking to Rod about his business, he says “Our business is not just covers!

We are now building full size barns. Don’t want to pay for installation? You and a friend can put it up in a weekend. We will give you all the instructions. If you just need parts to fix up something you want to make on your own, we can

sell you that too. Our covers are built to last. We use high quality steel with 13-gauge heavy posts. Once your cover is put up, it is not going anywhere! If you can think it, I’ll try to build it!” Needless to say, Rod is the man to go to for covers.

With summer coming to an end, it is time for people to start thinking about covering things up for winter. Ordering only takes a few weeks. If you would like the cover installed, it will be done through a sister company, and it could

be a month or two. Trust us, it’s worth the wait! If you or someone you know are thinking about covering equipment or animals, give EQ-Wine Covers a call and talk to Rod. Get your order in now and get on the books!.

The Kirby’s would like to say, “Thank you!” to their customers and friends who continue to support their Bigger-SmallTown Dream of selling Steel Covers! They couldn’t do it without you!

TRAUMA, TRUST AND TRANSITION WITH YOUR ANIMAL

If you are reading this, you are most likely an animal lover. You would do anything for your horse, dog or cat to keep them healthy, happy and comfortable. We are in their lives to help them have a better life by enabling them to release any old experiences, emotions or discomfort, as well as experience pure love and joy. They are in our lives to help us in a myriad of different ways – emotional support, fun, therapy, partnership, teacher or mentor, etc. And like all relationships, we come together with much emotional and physical baggage that can get in the way of the best experience for both sides.

As you know, our dogs and horses come to us from many different situations, and most of the time we have no real knowledge of their experiences before us. This makes it challenging when sudden behaviors pop up that can be scary, dangerous and concerning. These are often signs of some form of trauma they may have experienced before coming to us - physically, emotionally and/or mentally. We can get confused by these behaviors and don’t understand why they are suddenly acting out in a scared, aggressive or threatening manner, especially when we just want to love and care for them. The important thing to remember is this is not about you. They are reacting to a memory or trigger instinctively to protect themselves. Until the old emotion or experience is cleared and released energetically, it will always be there. No amount of training will erase that. It is an emotional/energetic issue and must be addressed from that place.

Animals, of their own accord, are only aggressive or reactive to people or situations if they have been trained to be that way or, they feel threatened. Animals generally are loving and kind unless a

situation teaches them to be otherwise. We, as a new guardian of these beautiful beings, must keep that in mind when we bring in a new horse or dog to our family. One thing I have learned working with these beings, is that they are willing and able to let go of past emotional abuse and trauma with ease when they receive some appropriate energetic healing or release work. We then must support them in this new emotional pattern by changing our expectations and behaviors towards them. They need reinforcement. Remember that animals are also reflecting us at all times, so we have to change our behavior as well. It goes both ways and can be very effective.

TRAUMA in our animals is often overlooked and not given enough attention. Trauma often overwhelms. Animals are extremely sensitive and want to love and please their human. This is where TRUST comes into the relationship and is so important. Without it, there will continue to be issues and problems. If an animal is scared, anxious, fearful,

reactive or traumatized, they will act out in a way that they feel will protect them. It is our job to recognize that and to help them let go and then move forward by clearing out those old energy patterns. As a result, it may take them awhile to learn to trust humans again, even if we were not the original perpetrators. Again, helping them energetically will allow them to start to trust us, and we need to also let go of our old energetic patterns so we can learn to support and trust them as well in a new way. The best part is, they are so open to this and willing to make those adjustments. Remember, they come from a place of unconditional love and a higher frequency than most of us! Let’s meet them at that higher place!

TRANSITION can be deeply difficult for all of us, animals and people alike.

Another area we need to better support our animals is at their time of TRANSITION, especially the last few weeks or months. I am sure you have seen posts that the hardest part of having an animal is letting them go.

This is so true. However, we can help the situation by learning to look at it from their perspective. I am a firm believer that the animals in our life are here for a specific purpose, to help us, their guardian, in many different ways. Look back at the animals you have had in your life, and how each one served a particular purpose for that part of your

life. Then the next animal came in and helped you in a different way. They are very often here to teach us a lesson, guide us through our own traumas, keep us company, etc. The point is that, when their job with us is finished it is time for them to move on, which allows you to move forward on your path.

TRUST makes a world of difference.

So, getting back to my original message, we need to honor them and help our animals in their final days, so they really feel the love and support, and help or allow them to transition when they are ready. Holding on to them and keeping them alive for our purposes does not help them. Again, think of their wellbeing and how you can best keep them from suffering too much at their end. They will let you know when it is time. When I talk to animals nearing their final days, they always tell me that they

will let their owners know when it is time for them to leave. We just have to pay attention to their messages and listen to their wishes. Also, be with them their final moments and show them as much love as possible to help them pass easily and quickly. They so appreciate it. It is the least we can do after all they have done for us.

I feel it is my honor and privilege to help our animal companions through these various stages of their life. The reward is seeing them let go of the pain and trauma, learn to trust and live a full and loving life until it is time for them to go. Both as an animal communicator and energy medicine practitioner, this work is so needed to help animals let go of their past and truly be in the present moment with their new family. Please reach out if you have any questions.

DYNAMITE SPECIALTY PRODUCTS: STATE-OF-THE-ART NUTRITION AND PRODUCTS FOR PETS AND HUMANS

Since a young age, I have loved animals of all sizes, shapes, and breeds! In 2005, a chance meeting changed the direction of my life when I accepted an invitation to attend a Dynamite Specialty Products seminar. Until then, I had never discovered a company with such high business ethics, integrity, and science-based products for animals and humans without the typical hype common in today’s marketplace. They are committed to improving the lives of all living creatures (including dogs, cats, exotics, birds, livestock, and humans!) through the high-quality products they manufacture to exacting standards in their privately owned facility.

The Inception Of Animal And Human Nutrition 101

After that seminar, I was inspired to begin a business committed to educating the public on “Living a Healthier Life through Better Nutrition for All Living Things.” My company is called “Animal and Human Nutrition 101.” We offer the highest quality food and supplement program for the best nutrition backed by science with Dynamite Specialty Products.

My mission is to provide:

1. Easy-to-access educational materials.

2. Science-based facts and

3. State-of-the-art nutritional products for a healthier life for themselves and their beloved animals.

My CHALLENGE To Every Pet Guardian

Please take a moment and consider the overall nutrition your pet receives daily through their food, nutritional products, and supplements. Now let me ask:

• Are you confident they have what they need with the highest quality available?

• Were you educated about the products relative to your pet’s specific needs?

• Or was it a haphazard guess about which products to buy and feed?

• Have you seen tangible evidence the product(s) are working?

WITH HOMEGROWN HORSEMANSHIP AND PERSONALIZED CARE, ISABEL SEMPE IS CHANGING THE SUPPLEMENT GAME

With so many supplement companies available to horse owners, it can be difficult to choose the right one for your horse. To make that decision easier, Isabel Sempe, owner and founder of Natural Equine Essentials, spent several years researching and developing which all-natural supplements work best for common equine ailments.

Sempe was born into a multigenerational horse breeding family from Honduras. Her father bred Quarter, Andalusian, and Peruvian horses and is one of the founders of the Peruvian Horse Association of Honduras.

“My dad was one of the first to import world class horses from South and North America into Honduras, for breeding and competition purposes,” Sempe says. “He was very involved in the daily care, making his own bran mash and growing his own grade ‘A’ Alfalfa hay for the horses.”

She spent her childhood on their 2,000acre equine breeding, agriculture, and dairy farm. She observed and learned the inner workings of the farm and gained firsthand knowledge of the many issues regarding raising, breeding, and caring for horses in the family business. With 80 horses on the property, vets were always there, and their farrier lived on the property. With this set up, she was able to absorb information from experts in their field through out her early years.

Sempe started riding horses at six years old. She has competed internationally in show jumping, dressage, eventing,

and Peruvian Paso Horse competitions. At an early age she learned English riding through her aunt, Titi Mills, a well-known trainer who represented Honduras in the Central American and Caribbean Games in show jumping, winning two silver medals.

“Titi showed me how horsemanship, discipline, hard work and attention to detail pay off in the long run for your horse and yourself as a rider,” Sempe says.

Strict and Disciplined

Sempe married and, through her husband’s job, moved and lived in four different countries in the span of 15 years. She was able to make friends and train with various Olympic trainers, well-known veterinarians, and farriers who are still close friends and parts of her vast equine network. This network and experience in different regions expanded her knowledge and provided support from accomplished equine professionals around the world.

“One of my trainers, Oswaldo MendezHerbruger (three time Olympic rider) was really intense,” says Sempe. “He said to me, ‘I am going to train you and take you to the Central American Games on your mare in three years.’”

Sempe describes herself as disciplined and strict, but this training program was one of the most intense she had ever gone through—and almost wore her down.

“I was crying all the time,” says Sempe. “It was very hard work.”

But that hard work paid off and in 2013, she was a member of the first eventing team to represent Honduras in the Central American Games.

“At 35 years old, I learned that it is never too late to start something,” says Sempe.

“When you work hard and that horse is your partner, you understand each other. You learn to read each other. What they’re thinking, what they’re feeling, it impacts you.”

Soon after, her husband’s job took their family to Wellington, FL. While it was a very different environment than what she was used to, she was introduced to the world of supplements…and hasn’t looked back since.

Creating a Product

Two of Sempe’s personal horses traveled from Chile, South America, to Florida with her, including her daughter’s horse who had a tough time with the change.

“He had allergies, got a colic from eating sand, had summer sores. You name it, he got it,” says Sempe.

She tried popular supplements, including natural supplements that were available at the time, with no results. This led her to dig into her network and research what natural ingredients would help her horses. Among those she consulted was a family friend who is also

a renowned veterinary pharmacologist and toxicologist. She consulted certified labs and various FEI veterinarians.

She was able to create products that not only helped her horses recover, but made them healthier and more responsive. Her close friends witnessed the quick and amazing change in her horses and asked if they could try her products on their own horses. They were suffering from digestive issues.

They started a trial supplement program under the close supervision of their veterinarian who evaluated their horses on a monthly basis. After a trial of 25 of their horses, all their coats were now shiny, and the horses with leaky gut now had normal stool. All the horses looked healthier, behaved better, and had noticeable improvements in gut health. To date they remain loyal clients and friends.

Growing Her Business

Since the creation of her first product, Sempe dove into discovering other needs in the market and filling them with natural supplements and products that focus on those needs.

Her products include complete gastric health and joint support supplements to electrolytes and fly control plus grooming products. Sempe works with FEI vets to ensure that all products have no banned ingredients and are FEI and USEF show-safe.

Sempe prides herself in creating strategic partnerships with all her clients, making sure that she listens to their needs and helps their horses through her supplements to become healthier, happier, and stronger through her unique understanding and lifelong experience with horses and the equine world. Natural Equine Essentials is a proud member of the renowned National Animal Supplement Council (NASC).

All their supplements and grooming products are 100% natural and are made in Natural Equine Essential’s warehouse facilities in Kentucky.

The digestive system of the horse is truly amazing. Simplistically, the digestive system of the horse can be thought of as a hollow tube that passes through the body from the mouth to just under the tail. It has the task of taking feed material in and then digesting that material. Nutrients that are useful to the horse are absorbed through the lining of the digestive tract while waste products are passed out of the digestive tract as manure. Horses have the ability to digest feed material utilizing enzymes in the small intestine, similar to humans. They also have the ability to ferment fibrous feed material (hay, pasture, beet pulp) in the large intestine with the help of an extensive microbiome consisting of bacteria, yeast and fungi). The ability of the digestive system to successfully digest feed and absorb nutrients is just part of its function. The digestive system and the microbiome it contains are also responsible for keeping harmful substances from entering the body. The horse, through normal grazing and feeding behavior, will take in many potentially dangerous substances that should not inhabit or be absorbed across the lining of the digestive tract into the body.

With the importance of the microbiome to healthy digestive system and to a healthy horse, the use of probiotics in feeds and supplements has become popular. A probiotic is a LIVE microorganism that is intended to have health benefits when consumed by the horse. Theoretically probiotics can help

maintain or improve the “good” bacteria (normalmicrobiome) in the horse. Unfortunately, not all probiotics are what they appear or claim to be. A research study looked at 11 commercially available equine probiotics to evaluate their content (Journal of Equine Veterinary Science, 2021, Volume 106). None of the equine probiotic supplements met their label claim of viable microorganisms. Performance Horse Nutrition (PHN) in partnership with Kemin Industries set out to create a better equine probiotic –PHN GI Pro3.

To make a “better” probiotic PHN and Kemin needed to be sure the microorganisms arrived to the large intestine alive and ready to function. The first death trap for live microorganisms is to survive the heat of manufacturing. The pelleting process can expose the live bugs to short-term temperatures in excess of 1800 Fahrenheit. PHN GI Pro3 has been proven to survive the heat of pelleting.Next, the probiotic must survive the acidic conditions of the equine stomach.Testing of GI Pro3 in acidic conditions similar to the conditions of transit through the equine stomach again demonstrated the ability of the microorganisms in GI Pro3 to survive. We now know that GI Pro3 is capable of being manufactured into a product and that it has the ability to survive the conditions of the stomach to arrive at the large intestine alive.

So what does the probiotic “PHN GI Pro3” actually do in the equine digestive system? This probiotic has the ability to inhibit bacteria that cause certain diseases in the horse. PHN GI Pro3 was tested in the laboratory and it has the ability to inhibit Clostridium, Rhodococcus, Streptococcus, and Salmonella bacteria. These “bad” bugs have the ability to create diseases ranging in symptoms from loose manure to explosive diarrhea and cause systemic bacterial infections, abscesses and microbiome dysbiosis. To be clear, PHN GI Pro3 does not have the ability to “treat” disease in a sick animal, but instead functions to help keep the digestive system clear of these bad bugs (pathogenic bacteria) potentially preventing disease.

This new probiotic is now being tested in selected equine feeds and supplements. In early testing, PHN GI Pro3 is a true

probiotic that has the ability to arrive to the equine large intestine alive with proven pathogen inhibition.

GREATER LOS ANGELES PAINT HORSE CLUB TAKING THE REINS!

The Greater Los Angeles Paint Horse Club is inviting all horse owners, regardless of what breed of horse they own and ride to join the club, as we have something for all equestrians. We have yearend awards programs for both colored and non-colored horses regardless of their breed. All riders and owners need to join up, so we can all work together to keep and maintain open space and trails for all to enjoy and keep equestrian communities safe from re-zoning and disappearing.

In June of 1984, the Greater Los Angeles Paint Horse Club was founded by a group of paint horse owners in Simi Valley, California. They were from all over Ventura County and the west end of the San Fernando valley, hence the name, Greater Los Angeles Paint Horse Club. Our logo was created by member and local artist Toni Haigh. She shows the two predominate coat patterns of paint horses, the Overo and the Tobiano. She also incorporated the tall buildings of Los Angeles and the palm trees of Ventura, with the ocean and the mountains of the area reflected as well. Toni grew up riding horses and herding cattle with family and friends in Thousand Oaks and Simi Valley.

G.L.A.P.H.C. became one of the thirteen other paint horse clubs in California.

In September of 1984, we held our first sanctioned American Paint Horse Association show at the Ventura County Fairgrounds. This year G.L.A.P.H.C. will celebrate its 40th anniversary. Over the years we have held APHA shows, open shows, trail rides to benefit St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, we’ve assisted in evacuations and housing displaced

horses from local wildfires as well as collecting donations for fire victims, we’ve sponsored diaper and baby care item drives for “Babies in Need”. Every year we give a scholarship to a graduating equestrian high school senior, regardless of what type of career path they choose to pursue.

In 1986 members of G.L.A.P.H.C. helped the Simi Valley Parks and Recreation Department draw up plans for an

equestrian center on 8.55 acres of land for all equestrian to use for daily riding and holding horse shows. In late 2022, G.L.A.P.H.C. presented a petition to the Simi Valley Parks and Recreation board to rehabilitate the Arroyo Simi Equestrian Center, so it can continue to serve the community. The club members have volunteered to help run the facility and help with its rehabilitation, so all equestrians can have a safe and pleasant place to hold events. All clubs and

organizations will be able to use the facility for various activities. As of July 2024, Simi Valley Parks District board has allocated $275,000 to get the facility back in shape with new footing and drainage for the arenas, updated judges stand, fix or replace bleachers and other necessary items. On September 6th, 2023 the Dale Poe Real Estate Group on behalf of the Poe family, donated 149 acres of land that will connect trails from the equestrian center to the Southern California Edison property trail, up to the Albertson Motorway trail that stretches to the Lang Ranch open space in Thousand Oaks, California.

Stay tuned for progress updates on this project.

The Greater Los Angeles Paint Horse Club is inviting all horse owners, regardless of what breed of horse they own and ride to join the club, as we have something for all equestrians. We have year end awards programs for both colored and non colored horses regardless of their breed. All riders and owners need to join up, so we can all work together to keep and maintain open space and trails for all to enjoy and keep equestrian communities safe from re-zoning and disappearing.

We are looking for any help we can generate, from memberships in our club, volunteers to help with projects and donations for purchasing needed materials.

THE CUTTING-EDGE LEGACY OF VARIAN EQUESTRIAN’S VETERINARY REPRODUCTION INNOVATIONS (VRI) BREEDING LAB

Nestled in the heart of the Varian Equestrian Center, the legendary home of Sheila Varian’s celebrated “Varian Arabians,” lies a breeding lab that continues to push the boundaries of equine reproduction. Though Sheila Varian’s presence is dearly missed, her pioneering spirit thrives through the innovative work of Veterinary Reproduction Innovations (VRI).

A Hub of Innovation

Under the clinical expertise of board certified veterinarian Dr. Joy Altermatt and scientific advisor Dr. Fernando Campos, a professor at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, VRI has emerged as a beacon of modern equine breeding techniques, though many horse owners in the region are unaware of the groundbreaking advancements happening right in their midst . Operating from the historic breeding lab, these visionaries with their dedicated team are quietly revolutionizing the industry with their cutting-edge reproductive projects. .

We are no longer limited to “the breeding season”

VRI’s expertise spans across all horse breeds, offering services like in vitro fertilization, including the use of sexed semen for Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI), time lapse incubation monitoring and other state-of-the-art methods to enhance conception rates year-round. The notion that breeding is confined to spring is now a thing of the past, thanks to their innovative approaches of embryo freezing. In fact, today’s strategy for progressive breeders is to bank embryos from dynamite matings through the fall and winter, for pregnancies beginning as early as February, catering to industries desiring

foals at the start of the year to get an edge on their game.

Window

to a new world of horse beginnings

Time-lapse imaging incubation is another fascinating technology that has offered new insight into the first days of a horse’s life. An indwelling camera in the incubation chambers allows a continual imaging of the earliest stages of development, providing scientific knowledge as well as a fascinating new look at the horse. In the hands of VRI’s in vitro fertilization methods, clients can share in the wonder of this window viewing of their embryos.

No dream too big or small

Whether working with mares and stallions in conventional mating strategies or through in vitro help, VRI is proud to help introduce the next generation of legends in a multitude of genres, be it jumping or dressage, barrel racing, reining or roping, cutting or cowhorse, or preserving that rare breed. With a combined experience of 40 years in assisted reproduction, they have been

pioneers in the field here in the West as well as introducing the technologies in other countries before establishing a home base on the central coast of California for the last twelve years.

Full-Service Boarding and Beyond

What sets VRI apart is its integration within the full-service boarding facility at Varian Equestrian Center. Here at Varian, a dedicated team of professionals ensures that horses receive unparalleled care in a serene environment, whether they stay for days, weeks, or even months to achieve clients’ reproductive

goals. Horses experience a stress free stay, graced with ideal weather and customized care, including access to grazing and exercise programs,

Expanding Horizons with the Vet Program

VRI’s influence extends beyond the Varian Equestrian Center through its exciting partner program for equine vets across the Western U.S. This initiative allows veterinarians to offer VRI’s advanced reproductive services to their clients, who can send genetic material such as horse eggs (oocytes) via expedited transport or bring their

PET-FRIENDLY ROAD TRIP: THE PACIFIC COAST HIGHWAY

State Route 1, also known as the Pacific Coast Highway or PCH, is a 656-mile major north-south highway from San Francisco to San Diego. A drive with your dog along the legendary PCH offers opportunities for epic cliffside views, unforgettable sandy beaches, amazing hikes in redwood forests and unique coastal towns. It’s the road trip of every California-loving canine’s dreams!

San Francisco

Start your road trip in San Francisco, one of the most pet-friendly cities in the U.S. While its most recognizable landmark, The Golden Gate Bridge, doesn’t allow pups, you can bring Fido to nearby Baker Beach to play and enjoy the incredible bridge views. Continue your sightseeing tour at Golden Gate Park, which has four off-leash areas and is one of the city’s most popular gathering spots for canines. Before heading south, visit Le Marcel bakery for a barker’s dozen of all-natural pastries and a coffee for the road. If you decide to spend the night, stay at The Cartwright Hotel, part of the Best Western Premier Collection.

Big Sur

Bordered to the east by the Santa Lucia Mountains and the west by the Pacific Ocean, the two-lane Pacific Coast Highway in Big Sur is known for winding turns, seaside cliffs and views of the often misty coastline. Go beachcombing for sand dollars with your leashed pup at the aptly named Sand Dollar Beach or stop for a picnic at Andrew Molera State Park. If you’d prefer a hot meal, dine on the dog-friendly patio at Big Sur Roadhouse. Camp under the stars with a dramatic ocean view in your own tent at Kirk Creek Campground, or glamp at the luxurious Alila Ventana Big Sur - Adults Only’s Redwood and Canyon Glampsites. Your dog can join you for breakfast in the morning at the resort’s The Sur House restaurant before you hit the road.

Carmel-by-the-Sea

No PCH road trip is complete without a visit to Carmel-by-the-Sea. This quaint seaside town owes a debt of gratitude to the late actress and animal lover, Doris Day, for leaving the area with a legacy of pet friendliness. Dogs are permitted to join their humans at most stores (like the uber dog-friendly Carmel Plaza), restaurants and art galleries in the area, and you’ll want to visit them all. Rent a bike with a pup-friendly sidecar at Mad Dogs & Englishmen for an excursion off Highway 1 to experience Scenic Road in Carmel or the famed 17-Mile Drive in Pebble Beach on two wheels. Be sure to make reservations to dine next to a fire pit on the lush garden patio at The Forge. Your dog can browse the restaurant’s Canine Cuisine menu and nosh on dishes like Plain Ol’ Kibble or The Good Dog (an 8-ounce grilled steak). At the end of the day, splurge for a stay at Cypress Inn, widely hailed as the most pet-friendly hotel in the country. Your pooch will thank you.

Santa Barbara

If you can convince Fido to leave Carmel and continue south, make time to check out Santa Barbara. Enjoy a private tour from Golden Limo Santa Barbara as you visit pet-friendly wineries for tastings and sip complimentary champagne during the ride. Afterward, play in the Pacific with your pup at Arroyo Burro Beach Park, or stay dry and take in firstclass coastal views with a cliffside walk on the Santa Barbara City College Trails. Stop to smell the roses at Santa Barbara Botanical Gardens with several trails for

you and Fido to explore. Rest your weary paws at the Hummingbird Cottage after a fun-filled day.

Malibu

Known around the world for its beautiful beaches, SoCal vibes and as an enclave for the rich and famous, Malibu boasts one of the most visited stretches of the PCH. Head to Leo Carrillo State Park & Beach to experience the surf and sand. Leashed dogs are welcome on the beach north of Lifeguard Tower 3, at the campground and at all day-use areas. Then head to Point Mugu State Park which features five miles of ocean shoreline with rocky bluffs, beaches and sand dunes.

Break for lunch on the patio at John’s Garden for sandwiches, salads and fruit smoothies, and keep your eyes peeled for stars getting their health food fix at this celeb hotspot. Work off those calories with a hike at Solstice Canyon, offering breathtaking ocean views. If you decide to stay overnight, book a Luxe Zen Retreat, where you can enjoy your morning coffee overlooking the Pacific while petting your pup.

Long Beach

Long Beach is home to the only off-leash dog beach in Los Angeles County, Rosie’s Dog Beach. After you’ve worked up an appetite playing in the sand and surf, head to The Attic, just 15 minutes by foot from the beach. While you chow down on Southern cuisine with a SoCal twist, treat Fido to some bacon, sausage or chicken from the restaurant’s dog menu. If you’re traveling with a small pooch, stay on The Queen Mary, a 1930s luxury cruise ship that has been docked at the port of Queensway Bay since 1967 and converted to a pet-friendly hotel. The ship is reportedly haunted, so maybe you’ll be visited by one of its ghosts. Bring your canine companion along on a Haunted Happenings Tour, Paranormal Investigation, or Paranormal Ship Walk. If you’re traveling with a big dog and need more space, or don’t want to run into any ghosts, book a room at the Hyatt Regency Long Beach instead.

Huntington Beach

Located on a mile-long stretch of sand between Seapoint Avenue and 21st

Street, Huntington Dog Beach is a canine lover’s paradise. Orange County’s only off-leash dog beach, nicknamed Surf City USA, is a fun spot for dogs who want to learn how to ride a wave with Good Kharma Surf Instruction or just romp in the sand. Huntington Beach is also one of the most pet-friendly beach towns in the U.S., so there’s a lot to do if you want to extend your stay. Grab a bite to eat at the Park Bench Cafe, located just a few miles from the beach in Huntington Beach Central Park. Its Canine Cuisine menu has offered fine treats to four-legged diners in its Doggie Dining Section since 1993. Then stop at Best Friend Dog Park to let your furry friend run off leash for a bit so he doesn’t get a tummy ache after his meal. In the afternoon, check into the Kimpton Shorebreak Resort, which offers cushy amenities for Fido including plush beds, water bowls and waste bags. Dogs are even welcome to join you at the nightly wine reception and by the fire pits while you roast complimentary s’mores.

San Diego

Fido’s road trip along the PCH ends in dog-loving San Diego. Cruise into town in time for lunch at Fred’s Mexican Cafe in Old Town, where pups can feast on sliced carne asada from the dog menu. Walk off your meal with a trip through the past with your leashed perro at Old Town San Diego State Historic Park, and learn what life was like as San Diego transitioned from a Mexican pueblo to an American settlement in the 1820s-1870s. You can also try a kayak or SUP excursion at Aqua Adventures, which is ideally situated between The Original Dog Beach and Fiesta Island Off-Leash Dog Park. When night falls, embark on an informative and spooky walking tour with San Diego Ghosts. End your epic PCH road trip with a stay at Ocean Villa Inn, located just steps away from The Original Dog Beach.

REALTORS SPECIALIZE IN EQUESTRIAN PROPERTY

We get asked frequently, “My property is not horse-friendly, so can you sell it?” While the question confirms that I have succeeded in branding our business as the go-to horse property brokerage, I must explain. We sell only a small percentage of property to people who own horses. Buyers seek horse property for many reasons: they desire a large lot for gardening, a car collection, or space for the kids to play soccer. They want a vineyard, a tennis court, a workshop, or distance from the neighbor so they can invite the garage band over. Many don’t have horses yet want chickens and goats, an RV, or simply a rural environment without curbs and street lamps. So the answer is, “Of course!” Our marketing will undoubtedly attract the best buyer who will “cowboy up” to pay the highest price for your property.

That said, we represent horse property of all types, from the small residential mini-farm to the sizable commercial ranch. These properties have in common issues foreign to many brokers who sell tract homes and non-rural estates. Septic systems, easements, encroachments, non-conforming construction, and specialized insurance needs are just a few of the issues that are the rule rather than the exception.

REDISCOVER THE FUN OF A SHOWCATION

Each season since its opening in 2015 the Paso Robles Horse Park (Paso Park) has progressed further towards its goal of being recognized as one of the top facilities to host the sport of show jumping. Its unique management structure brings the horse show production and the facility maintenance team together under one umbrella; this results in an experience for competitors and spectators that is unparalleled throughout the region.

What makes this facility standout from others is the way it has embraced and celebrated the unique experience found only in Paso Robles. “The Park began as a vision of Linda Starkman’s for equestrian enthusiasts and competitors.”

Park Director, Amanda Diefenderfer commented, “She has taken that vision and brought to life a facility that appeals directly to the needs of show jumping competitors but also brings the top talent of the sport here to the Central Coast for the local community to watch and enjoy.”

This Fall, the Paso Park will host 6 total shows including two locally recognized schooling shows, two regionally rated B Shows, and two nationally rated Classic Shows. The Classics, held for two weeks in in November, attract the top show jumping competitors from throughout the western US. All shows are free for spectators and encourage the public to attend and experience this thrilling equestrian sport.
