What Travel Brings to Kids
The benefits of a family vacation run deep.
THAT LOOK OF pure happiness on your kids’ faces as they step off the airplane and begin their family vacation is reason enough to book this year’s trip. But the goodness doesn’t end there. Travel offers a multitude of real benefits to children beyond just fun.
Wanderlust and adventurousness
Taking young children on vacation can help them develop a love of travel and exploration. It instills in them a sense of curiosity and a desire to learn about new places and cultures.
New hobbies and interests
When away from home, kids try things they might never have considered before— and you never know where that will lead. An afternoon at the Louvre could inspire
your son to ask to take art classes; a week in Maui could lead to your daughter developing a passion for surfing.
Strong family bonds
The adventures shared among your family will bring you closer than ever. It will happen without you even noticing, as connections between family members grow stronger as you share new experiences.
Patience, flexibility and problem-solving
Even the most carefully planned vacation can hit a snag here and there, since you can’t control things like bad weather or a brokendown tour bus. Experiencing a bit of adversity can help kids develop a flexible attitude that will take them a long way in life.
Expanded palates
When picky eaters are exposed to new cuisines, it can help broaden their culinary horizons.
Even the fussiest in your group is likely to find a few new favorites.
Confidence and social skills
Being exposed to new people and cultures broadens kids’ horizons and helps them learn to interact with a diverse range of people. It builds confidence by forcing them to step out of their comfort zone.
Making memories
By embarking on new adventures, you’ll create unique experiences that your kids will look back on fondly for years.
Expanded worldview
By exposing kids to different ways of life, they gain a better understanding and appreciation of the diversity of the world around them. Interacting with people from other cultures and backgrounds helps develop empathy. All of these experiences lead to a more global and inclusive perspective and a greater appreciation of the world.
A family poses for a shot at Sam Phan Bok, the biggest rock reef in the Mekong River in Lao Ngam, Thailand. Taking lots of photos on your family vacation will help kids remember their trip for years to come.
Nurture Their Passion for Exploration
Developed in conjunction with National Geographic Education, National Geographic Global Explorers is a unique exploration-based program that provides an unforgettable “smart fun” experience for those 18 and under. Kids and teens may take part in a host of cool activities, all adapted for their age and designed to develop the attitudes, skills and knowledge of an explorer. Young explorers can go hiking and document wildlife behaviors, collect and observe plankton and even learn to “drive” a Zodiac—all while making new friends and lifelong memories.

1 Loosen your rules
Let your kids stay up past their bedtime to stroll past evening street performers or catch a stage show at your resort. Say yes to inroom dining with screen time for the kids while you and your spouse enjoy a romantic dinner on the balcony. Letting go of your typical rules and routines will reduce conflicts and allow more fun for everyone.

Fun for All
As parents, we plan most of the family vacation around our kids. Here’s how to make sure the grown-ups have a great time, too.
[ by Jessica Pollack ]KIDS CHANGE YOUR LIFE forever—and that can include your travel plans. But a family-friendly vacation doesn’t have to mean sacrificing your own good times. Try these tips to keep the whole family happy.
Upgrade your room
Invest in a suite with a separate bedroom so you can enjoy some adult-only time after the children go to sleep. On a cruise ship, choose a room with a balcony, where you can spend time after the kids are in bed, if weather permits. No matter where you’re staying, take the time to fill it with all the fun things you’d want after your kids go to sleep. Grab lots of local snacks and set up a minibar to give yourself a taste of nightlife at home, and bring some fun travelsized games you can play with your partner.
3 Get your kids engaged
Part of having a good time as a parent is making sure your kids are having fun. Keep whining to a minimum by piquing your children’s specific interests. Let each kid pick their own sightseeing activity. You could even pre-prepare a scavenger hunt so they can score points by keeping a lookout while walking around. Or find a fun-foreverybody destination that speaks to one of your children’s passions. Are they into art? Consider Paris. Obsessed with space? Catch a glimpse of the aurora borealis in Sweden.
4 Bring friends along
There are perks to teaming up with another family for your vacation: more kids for yours to play with, more adults to help with logistics and the potential to stay in more luxurious rentals and villas. Best of all? Babysitters! Each couple can have a night out on their own while the other hangs back with the kiddos.

You’re going on a family vacation! Great!
For a hassle-free holiday, our exclusive Family Collection can meet any family’s travel needs. So now Mom and Dad are enjoying a romantic sunset on the beach while their little ones are having a movie night at the kids’ club. Teens can post vacation highlights on TikTok with free WiFi.
Make every moment count on your family getaway!
Teenage Dream
How to plan a trip your teens will rave about for years.
TEENAGERS CAN BE A HARD-TO-IMPRESS BUNCH.
We asked Family Twist, a private family vacation guide company, how to make sure teens will have fun on their family trip.
What types of experiences do teenagers like the best?
They want to be engaged. For example, an escape-room activity will impress, whereas an audio guide in a museum probably won’t.
Teens love active experiences, like bike riding, boat tours or hikes. Hands-on activities also go over well— things like cooking pasta in Rome, learning about street art in Shoreditch (arguably the coolest area in London) or baking macarons in Paris.
The key is to make the experiences diverse. And of course, everything should ideally be highly Instagrammable!
What’s a common mistake parents make when planning a trip with teens?
Some forget to take their kids’ individual interests into consideration, whether that’s fashion, football, horses, unsolved mysteries, music or Da Vinci. Try to include at
least one “me-time moment” for each teen during the trip.
What are some travel hacks parents of teens should know? On your first day, start with something the kids are looking forward to. Do not lose them at the very start! They will be hard to remotivate.
As tempting as it can be to jam-pack your trip, leave some free time so teens can sleep, eat and update their social networks.
A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down. A “boring” church tour is more palatable if followed by a pizza-making class.
What are some teen-friendly destinations trending for 2023?
Paris is popular for its glamor, art and architecture. London is a good choice for its history of music and fashion, and its rebel spirit in general. And Barcelona is a great option, known for its laid-back atmosphere, beaches, tapas and football.
IN THE BAG
Six clever packing tips you might not have thought of.
1 Most frequent flyers already know to roll their clothes instead of folding them because of how much space it saves, but if you don’t do this yet, now’s the time to start. And don’t let any space go unused; rolled-up underwear and socks can be stashed inside your shoes or in bra cups, for example.
2 Use packing cubes (available widely, including on Amazon). These small, lightweight fabric boxes help you organize and compartmentalize your clothes and other items in your suitcase and can save space, too.
3 Bring along a couple of plastic bags. They’ll come in handy on your trip if you need to pack a damp bathing suit or dirty shoes. You can also use them to separate clothes that needs laundering.
4 If you’re taking delicate jewelry items, like necklaces with fine strands, put each piece in an individual snacksized zip-top bag to prevent tangling.
5 Place heavier items, like shoes and books, at the wheeled end of your luggage. Your bag is more likely to stay stable when upright, and your more delicate items will avoid getting squished.
6 Consider what some experts say not to pack— like a bulky neck pillow (inflatable is better), dryclean-only clothing (if it gets dirty, you’ll be stuck hunting for a cleaner when you’d rather be sightseeing) and dressy, one-event shoes you can barely walk in (for obvious reasons!).
Outside the Box
Unexpected familyfriendly destinations to visit now.
[ by Stephanie Gray ]HAVING WEE ONES
in tow doesn’t mean you’re forced to limit your travels to all-inclusive beach resorts or Disneyland. Instead, consider the unexpected. Here are some surprisingly family-friendly spots you might never have thought of visiting—until now.
Into the wild
With its exhilarating outdoor pursuits, magical wildlife and dazzling beauty, Alaska is a destination that will thrill the entire family. Kid-friendly shore excursions include the Anchorage Museum’s 11,000-square-foot handson Discovery Center, with 80 exhibits designed for young ones. A few other great spots for families: the Alaska Native Heritage Center, where you can learn about native Alaskan culture and traditions; the Alaska SeaLife Center, a research center that’s home to diverse marine life, including puffins, sea lions and octopuses; and the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, an animal sanctuary with hundreds of species to see, from moose to black bears.
Cruisers have no shortage of unique excursions to consider while pausing in Juneau.
Dogsled past scenic glaciers or soar above alpine ridges and crystal-clear pools in a helicopter before landing on the famous Mendenhall Glacier for a short glacier trek.
Hop onto a catamaran and head for picturesque Auke Bay, an unparalleled destination for whale watching, where you’ll enjoy up-close views of remarkable marine animals, from humpbacks to seals.
History in the making
If the idea of a northern getaway makes your teeth chatter, then
consider Europe. A familyfavorite destination that always impresses is Rome for its fantastic food, rich history and iconic sites. At can’t-miss landmarks like the Colosseum, try a private tour that caters to kids’ shorter attention spans and lets you skip the lineups. Immerse them with a gladiator lesson where they’ll learn how to fight like an ancient warrior or a kid-friendly cooking class making gelato and biscotti. But let’s be real: your kids’ favorite part of Rome will probably be mealtime. Pasta, pizza and gelato? As the kids say, let’s go!
Another European city that ticks off all the boxes for families is Barcelona. Easy to navigate by foot or public transit, there are endless activities to experience. Ride a cable car above the city, visit the century-old Tibidabo amusement park, rent a rowboat in the Parc de la Ciutadella and make
sandcastles at the city beach. You’ll want to book ahead to visit Park Güell and Sagrada Familia, both iconic landmarks that should impress toddlers and teens alike.
Finally, consider Copenhagen when pondering your next family trip. Among your first stops should be the Children’s Museum, located inside the National Museum of Denmark, where you can make a snack in a medieval kitchen or take a voyage in a Viking ship. If that’s not enough to impress, kids can press the Boredom Button and uncover surprises like secret chests and talking paintings. An inspiration for Hans Christian Andersen and Walt Disney, the Tivoli Gardens theme park is like stepping into a fairytale with its lush gardens and thrilling rides. Copenhagen features 125 public playgrounds, making it easy to find a spot to stop and soak in the culture.

Time to Celebrate!
Planning a trip around an important life milestone? Whether it’s a birthday, retirement or something else, here are some fun ways to make the most of it while you’re away.
[ by Stephanie Matas ]THERE’S NO BETTER way to mark a special occasion than with travel. If you’re looking for ideas for ways to celebrate while you’re on your trip, read on.
Embrace traditions
Take part in celebratory customs at your destination for a fun and unique birthday experience. In Jamaica, friends and family playfully throw flour at partygoers. In Mexico, there are songs and chants for everything from cutting the cake to swinging at the piñata. In Spain, be prepared to have your ear tugged—once for every year!
Your travel advisor can help you find an exciting spot in the region you’re visiting. Upscale experiences Splurge on an upgraded hotel room to make your time away more luxurious. Your travel advisor may even be able to help with that, as they can sometimes provide travelers with perks like better accommodations, early check-in and late checkout, daily breakfast,
afternoon tea and more. Need a reservation at a popular restaurant or tickets to a sold-out show? Your travel advisor may be able to make it happen.
Sip and savor
Mark a big moment in your life with an unforgettable rail adventure. There are plenty of exciting tour itineraries across the globe, whether you want to celebrate atop a mountain in Machu Picchu, beneath a cherry blossom tree in Japan or while sipping champagne in a luxe full-service cabin while marveling at stunning landscapes.
Get and give Spoil yourself with a shopping spree at local shops and marketplaces. You’ll find authentic products and exceptional services that you won’t find at home. Plus, you can feel good knowing your
purchases support the local community. Consider picking up woven bags and baskets in Africa, handblown glassware in Murano, Italy, or an intricately carved flamenco guitar in Spain.
Take to the water

Honeymoon Like a Celeb
Celebrate your love like the stars do, without spending millions.
[ by Jessica Pollack ]FROM PRIVATE ISLANDS TO once-in-a-lifetime experiences, the stars know how to honeymoon in style. And although replicating their itinerary would be out of the question for most people, there’s no reason you can’t build a more affordable escape inspired by your favorite A-list couple.
For beach lovers
If a sunny oasis sounds like the perfect way to bask in that newlywed bliss, consider celebrity favorite Seychelles, home to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The Clooneys and the Cambridges spent a small fortune at Seychelles’ uber-exclusive North Island resort, but that doesn’t mean it’s the only option. Mahé, the largest island, is absolutely stunning, with 3,000-foot mountains and tons of gorgeous beaches. You’ll also get to soak up some local culture in Victoria, the capital and largest city of the Seychelles.
Meanwhile, Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade headed to the Indian Ocean’s other island escape, the Maldives. Look for a resort with overwater bungalows, like the stunning Conrad Maldives Rangali Island.
For something a little closer to home, Sofia Vergara and Joe Manganiello lived it up at the five-star Como Parrot Cay resort in Turks and Caicos. Grab a cliffside room at Rock House, one of Providenciales’ most unique hotels. You’ll feel like you’re in Capri!
For city explorers
Paris may be the city of love, but the rich and famous seem to flock to Italy after tying the knot. With its cliffside towns, gorgeous beaches and succulent seafood, the Amalfi Coast oozes Old Hollywood glamor, which drew Justin and Hailey Bieber, Heidi Klum and Reese Witherspoon. Consider visiting in September, during shoulder season when tourism starts to dip but conditions are still lovely.
After their wedding in Lake Como (where JLo and Ben Affleck recently honeymooned), Chrissy Teigen and John Legend found some romance in Portofino, a luxe harbor town on the Ligurian coast. Remember that you can always stay in less popular coastal towns (like Ravello or Santa Margherita Ligure) and do day trips to spots like Capri, Positano and Portofino.
Opting to avoid crowds, Gwyneth Paltrow and hubby Brad Falchuk took in the rolling green hills and stunning sunsets in Umbria, Tuscany’s less-touristy neighbor. And for culture with a

capital C, Amy Schumer was in full tourist mode while exploring Milan, Venice and Rome, big cities where you can often grab passes that cover public transport and entry to some of the local sights.
For adventure seekers
Newly minted spouses bonded by their love of adventure can look to Mandy Moore’s Chilean getaway for inspiration. The This Is Us star hiked her way through the South American country, from the glaciers in Patagonia to the world’s driest spot, the Atacama Desert. Stunning Explora lodges across the country marry all-inclusive experiences (hiking, horseback riding and more) with local conservation education.
If you’re dreaming of a safari, you’ll find plenty of ideas on Idris Elba’s and Emmy Rossum’s social feeds, where they shared their respective African honeymoons. Elba stayed at two spectacular eco-lodges in Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park, but there are plenty more affordable options in Tanzania, Kenya and South Africa, where Hilary Duff saw the “big five” at the more affordable Kruger National Park. Rossum trekked with mountain gorillas in Rwanda, where she also photographed zebras, cheetahs and gazelles. If you’re looking for a more budget-friendly way to hang with gorillas, Uganda offers cheaper permits with a mix of mid-range and luxury accommodations.

gondola at Xoximilco in Cancun. Retreat to your own tropical oasis at Montage Los Cabos, which captures the essence of love with sunsets of pink and lavender. The hotel has a lookout perched above Santa Maria Bay called El Cielo (the sky) where lovers can enjoy an intimate five-course dinner.
Better together
Relax and unwind with a couples massage, stimulating and reinvigorating your minds and bodies in a beautiful and serene environment. A good massage releases oxytocin, dopamine, endorphins and serotonin into the bloodstream, which can help increase feelings of love and intimacy. Plus, it just feels amazing in the moment. At the Ritz-Carlton in in Kapalua, Hawaii, chill out in a bamboo hut with the ocean breeze at your back as trained therapists massage and pamper you. Or check in to The Lanesborough Club & Spa in London for a luxurious Himalayan salt stone massage for two. Bliss!
