Everything Under the Sun

Every year, millions of North Americans travel to warmer climes for sun, sea and sand. But there’s more than that drawing them — it’s the variety of genuine experiences waiting beyond the shore. Check out our guide to immersive Caribbean skill-tourism activities, from chocolate making to tropical gardening, on page 8. Options for sports and wellness trippers are also on the rise, as shown by pickleball’s straight-sets sweep of resorts and cruise ships (page 22). And, of course, the south has always been a place to disconnect and bask in JOMO — the joy of missing out — and a new wave of luxury all-inclusive resorts (page 16) makes that easier than ever. All you need to do is follow the sun.

What’s new and noteworthy for sun- and sand-seekers.

Small Ships, Big Luxury

Some of the grandest cruising experiences now come aboard the smallest ships — with fewer than 500 passengers — as hospitality giants like the Ritz-Carlton, Four Seasons and Aman enter the luxury yacht space. The Ritz-Carlton’s third superyacht, Luminara, will sail to Alaska in 2026 furnished with original works by Henri Matisse and David Hockney. Four Seasons’ flagship yacht makes its debut in January in the Caribbean flaunting a retractable floating marina with an inner bar and lounge. Meanwhile, Star Seeker, the first of two custom Star Class ships from Windstar Cruises, launches in December with a full-service spa and suites with floor-to-ceiling ocean views. On the Great Lakes, Victory Cruise Lines began smallship sailings last spring, including tours of Frank Lloyd Wright landmarks.

A New Class of Cruisers

Considering your first cruise? You’re in good company. The latest report from Cruise Lines International Association reveals 68 percent of international travelers are doing the same, and a record number of first-time cruisers have already set sail over the past two years. This trend bodes well for the industry, especially when combined with other positive indicators: 82 percent of past cruisers plan to cruise again, and when they do, nearly half intend to go on longer voyages. By 2028, some 42 million people are forecast to embark on a cruise getaway — among them, 1.5 million seeking luxury on the high seas and a wave of younger adventurers chasing expedition experiences.

The World’s Best Beaches

WHITEHAVEN BEACH IN QUEENSLAND, AUSTRALIA

At 98 percent pure silica, the sands of Whitehaven Beach are soft, powdery and so white that they barely retain heat, making this Whitsunday Island strand a top choice for travelers and Lonely Planet’s latest pick for the best in the world.

ELAFONISSI BEACH IN CRETE, GREECE

Pink sands, turquoise waters and hiking trails are among the reasons this beach is called the “Caribbean of the Mediterranean” and was named the best beach in the world by TripAdvisor’s Travellers’ Choice Awards this year.

MIRROR BEACH NEAR KSAMIL, ALBANIA

The top trending beach destination? According to search and TikTok data analyzed by Planet Cruise, it’s Ksamil, Albania, where Mirror Beach ranks high for the sparkling reflections the sun casts over the Ionian Sea.

Pop-up Sunshade

The bright idea for the Miasun Beach Tent came to friends Hortense Pontabry and Valériane Voirin on a holiday while searching for cover from the hot Australian sun. After tiring of lugging a heavy parasol around, the French duo cobbled together a makeshift sunshade that became their prototype. The final product — foldable, totable and sealed with UPF30+ coating — weighs just 2.5 pounds and fits into carry-ons and beach bags with ease.

America’s Favorite Theme Park at 40

Welcome to Dollywood, the friendliest town in the Smokies — and America’s favorite theme park for the third year in a row, according to the National Amusement Park Historical Association. The woodsy Tennessee-based attraction may have officially opened its gates on May 3, 1986, but this year marks 40 seasons of rides and slides, complete with a new park tour, the new Wilderness Pass Restaurant and more surprises. And yes, Dolly Parton herself was on hand to kick celebrations off with the premiere of Play On, a brand new retrospective show.

Waterslides Taller than Niagara Falls

At 250 feet, four inches tall, Vertigo and the Fractionator at Meryal Waterpark in Lusail, Qatar, have been officially recognized by Guinness World Records as the tallest waterslides in the world. Both are part of Rig 1938 — a six-level structure so massive it stands on its own peninsula, and the first to launch 12 slides from a single tower. Vertigo sends riders plummeting through a trapdoor into a transparent twisting chute. The Fractionator, a more classic body slide, delivers a high-speed descent packed with sharp turns and heart-racing drops.

LAST FERRY OUT, ANDREA BARTZ

Fly Me to the Sun

This winter, escaping to the Caribbean will be easier than ever. Starting in December, Delta Air Lines will expand its network with new direct service from Atlanta to Grenada and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, making 2026 its largestever winter schedule in Latin America and the Caribbean. North of the border, Air Canada is also ramping up its sun-bound offerings, adding nonstop flights from Ottawa to the Bahamas and Jamaica as part of its biggest season in the region yet, with seat capacity up 16 percent. The Dominican Republic remains the most visited destination in the Caribbean, while the broader region is on track to welcome 776 million air travelers by the end of 2025 — a 4.1 percent increase over last year. 

Lessons from the Islands

When in the Caribbean, do as the locals do. Craft, farm and cook your way to the heart of cultural traditions — and pick up a few skills to take home with you.

Say the name of a Caribbean or Central American nation and many travelers picture the same thing: white sand, turquoise waters and activities that require a swimsuit. “People often stick to the beaches and resorts, but there’s so much more to experience,” says Fiona Compton, a cultural ambassador behind the popular Instagram and TikTok account Know Your Caribbean. In 2021, Compton and co-host Sherween Gonzales launched Tryin’ a Ting, a video series that follows the duo as they try everything from sea-moss farming to sand-cooking fish. According to them, travelers are catching on. “There’s a shift from being just a tourist to being a guest — someone who learns, connects and leaves with more than just photos,” says Gonzales. “And in the Caribbean, where culture and nature are so closely tied, those kinds of experiences stay with you.” So, ready to try something new?

Belize Cook Traditional Hudut

In every simmering pot of hudut, a culture endures. The seafood stew, named for the mashed plantain in each bowl, is a Garifuna specialty once nearly lost under French and British colonial rule. The dish traces the Garifuna people’s lineage through its ingredients: Plantain mash evokes the journey of West Africans who fled slave ships to Saint Vincent, while coconut broth and spices reflect native crops long cultivated by Arawak and Carib peoples. After resisting British forces, the Garifuna — AfroIndigenous descendants of these communities — were exiled in 1797 and nearly wiped out. Survivors fled to Guatemala, Nicaragua and Belize, where their culture lives on. In Hopkins, a hub of the Garifuna diaspora in Belize, cooking classes by Namu Travel give participants the chance to make and try hudut with local experts in an open-air, thatched kitchen.

Migratory Birds

As the easternmost island in the Lesser Antilles, Barbados is a key layover for migratory birds winging their way along the Atlantic Flyway, one of four avian “superhighways” between North America and South America. Among these frequent flyers are sandpipers, great blue herons, kingfishers, snowy egrets and whistling ducks, who bring the island’s species tally well above 250. Island Routes’ Barbados Bird Watching Experience takes birders from Woodbourne Shorebird Reserve, a wetland sanctuary for migratory birds, to King George V Memorial Park, where all eyes are on the island’s only endemic passerine, the Barbados bullfinch — known locally as a sparky or sparrow. You might also spot the yellow-bellied bananaquit, green-throated carib hummingbird and Eurasian collared dove.

Brew Coffee with a Local

The Dominican Culture Experience by Chukka Caribbean Adventures starts with a freshly brewed cup at Mama Blanca’s casa típica in the countryside, a hilly 45-minute drive from Amber Cove cruise port. Here, beans are roasted over the fire, ground by mortar and pestle and brewed in a greca — a stovetop coffee maker found in nearly every Dominican home. After sampling fresh-rolled cigars and Mama Juana (a spicedrum cocktail), the tour wraps in Coconut Cove, an oceanside outpost where guests learn to make mofongo: a mash of plantains, shredded chicken, garlic, olive oil, salt and cheese.

Get Close to Rescued Wildlife

Perhaps you saw the viral video of a mother sloth reunited with her baby, found alone on a Costa Rican beach. The organization behind the reunion was the Jaguar Rescue Center, a sanctuary and clinic in Playa Chiquita dedicated to the rehabilitation of mistreated, injured or orphaned animals. On a tour with Travel Excellence, guests can meet resident monkeys, sloths, anteaters and other wildlife up close, get to know their characteristics and rehabilitation stories firsthand and contribute to their care and recovery. Fall in love with a furry or feathered friend? Consider an adoption: You’ll receive a certificate, background story and photos to take home.

Jamaica Experience Equine Empowerment

At the Half Moon Equestrian Centre, director Trina deLisser likes to think of the resident horses as wellness instructors. The stables, which have been part of the Half Moon resort in Montego Bay, Jamaica, for nearly 40 years, host weekly therapeutic rides for children and adults with special needs, including Positive Empowerment Sessions, where participants learn how to use body language to communicate with horses and build a bond through mutual respect. In the Swim with Horses activity at Sunrise Beach, riders wade into the sea on horseback with the support of well-trained guides. Private lessons are also available for dressage, polo or jumping.

Craft Your Own Chocolate Bar

Cacao is experiencing a revival in Saint Lucia — so much so that in 2014, the island decreed August as Chocolate Heritage Month. But there’s decadence to be found year-round. Join Barefoot Holidays for the Bean-to-Bar experience at the Rabot Estate, the oldest working cacao farm on the island (revived in 2006). After learning the intricacies of growing, fermenting, drying, roasting and conching cacao beans, grab a mortar and pestle and pound up some nibs to create a bar of your own. While it cools in the freezer, shop the Wall of Chocolate or try the restaurant’s Cacao BBQ Wings and famous Ice Cream of the Gods soft-serve. 

The All-inclusive Goes Extra

Michelin stars and underwater spin classes? Check us in.

All-inclusives are having a glow-up. Out are buffet lines and syrupy margaritas. In are Michelin-starred restaurants, designer interiors and wellness programs that feel more like five-star retreats than resort afterthoughts. And no, it’s not Boomers leading this trend. In a recent survey from Hotels.com, 42 percent of Gen Z respondents said all-inclusives are their preferred hotel type — more than any other generation. The finding is telling. These younger travelers are jet-setting their way to the top of the luxury market, and they’re checking in with a set of expectations that lean more Soho House than spring break. For them, the appeal of the all-in lies not only in its ease — who doesn’t want to be blissfully wallet-free on holiday? — but also its evolution. Among the resorts setting a new standard is Grand Velas Los Cabos in Mexico. It’s home to Cocina de Autor, the first restaurant in the region to earn a Michelin star and one of only

four all-inclusive restaurants in the country bestowed with the honor. (The Cocina de Autor at Grand Velas Riviera Maya also nabbed a star.) Led by Dutch chef Sidney Schutte and Jalisco native Francisco Sixtos, access to the oceanfront restaurant is included in the nightly rate for guests and available to outside visitors with reservations. Inspired by Mexican cuisine, the multi-course tasting menu features bold dishes like chocolate clam with jalapeño, green apple and nixtamal, and yellow corn velouté with shiitake mushrooms — a spin on the classic sopa de elote.

Rarely are such artfully prepared plates served this close to the sand. “Today’s traveler expects culinary experiences that rival the best standalone restaurants in the world — authentic, inventive and rooted in a strong sense of place,” says Sixtos. “We offer thoughtful dining experiences that reflect both Mexico’s culinary heritage and global trends, using locally sourced ingredients. It’s all about the details.” Such details include a craft cocktail or mocktail served as

an aperitif beside the koi pond and a Guerrero-inspired chilate (a warm and decadent cacao dessert) to close out the meal.

Beyond the plate, guests now expect all-inclusives to raise the bar in the gym, too. “More travelers want to maintain their existing routines, so there’s a need to keep up with studio trends,” says fitness instructor and personal trainer Juan David Caballero Aguilera. In addition to appearances by celebrity trainers and a full calendar of yoga, Pilates and Zumba classes, the wellness lineup includes group strength sessions, trampoline workouts and, soon, rooftop pickleball matches. Think aqua aerobics sounds cute? Try aqua spinning, where stationary bikes are installed underwater for calorie-torching workouts.

The sea begins where the infinity pool ends at Grand Velas Los Cabos; the terraced Serenity pool reserves tiers for adults, families and activities.

The hotel chain doubled down on the luxury all-inclusive format with the opening of Grand Velas Boutique Los Cabos, an adults-only retreat located steps away on the Tourist Corridor. In contrast to these properties, the group’s third Los Cabos outpost, Mar del Cabo,

is one of few hotels in the region that follows the so-called “European Plan,” where food and beverages are à la carte rather than bundled with the room rate. This option better suits those who plan to spend more time exploring Cabo San Lucas beyond the resort’s bougainvillea-draped walls. “We know our guests aren’t staying here all day, and we encourage that,” says Mar del Cabo’s community manager, Daniela Pamatz.

Design-wise, these properties are miles away from the copypaste aesthetic of the basic beach resort. Grand Velas Los Cabos channels The White Lotus’ lookbook with lush landscaping and a sleek, multi-level outdoor space with three infinity pools and a thoughtful layout that allows for privacy. At Mar del Cabo the same is true, but with a more bohemian, almost Santorini-esque style. Rooms are outfitted with Oaxacan rugs, hand-painted tiles and colorful embroidered pillows sourced from Mexican artisans. With any suite stay at Grand Velas Los Cabos and Grand Velas

The luxury all-inclusive has come into its own elsewhere, too.

After opening its first Luxury Collection resort in the Dominican Republic, Marriott expanded its footprint in Mexico with Paraiso de la Bonita in the Riviera Maya, Almare on Isla Mujeres farther north and W Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic. In June, Hilton opened Zemi Miches Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic — the first all-inclusive in the country from its upscale Curio Collection. The design-forward beachfront property features 123 swim-up suites and 20 ultra-plush beachfront bungalows.

In nearly all aspects, the new class of all-inclusive resorts isn’t about excess — it’s about curated offerings, quality and customization. These aren’t your parents’ prepaid package getaways, and that’s exactly the point. 

Have Paddle, Will Travel

A group trip to Palm Springs charts pickleball’s rise from fitness craze to travel trend.

“Let’s build good habits,” Cesar Figueroa tells us as we begin our pickleball lesson. Having come straight to the courts after a five-hour flight to Palm Springs, we’re thrilled to be moving our bodies, bouncing on the balls of our feet as we wait to return serves. The embrace of California’s warm desert air, palm trees arching overhead and afternoon sun shining over the San Jacinto Mountains is instantly rejuvenating after weeks of gray skies at home.

THIS SPREAD, LEFT TO RIGHT Palm Springs is home to dozens of public pickleball courts in addition to those found at hotels, resorts and health clubs across the region; it’s cool-down time at La Quinta Resort & Club, where picklers can make use of eight courts against the backdrop of the San Jacinto Mountains.

Figueroa is a U.S. Professional Tennis Registry-certified racquet sports instructor at La Quinta Resort & Club just outside Palm Springs. I hang on his every instruction as he leads us through drills, loosening our grips, improving foot placement and adjusting our swings. Eight of us have coordinated schedules to make this trip happen, and we’re ready to play.

A good habit is the reason we’re here: One year earlier, I joined a small group of women on a fluorescent-lit court in the basement of an office building in downtown Toronto. Pickleball, which combines aspects of tennis (a low net), Ping-Pong (the paddle)

and badminton (the court and a lightweight plastic ball), is one of the fastest-growing sports in North America. We were all new to the game and looking for others to play with. One week led to another: Tuesday evenings were blocked off for pickleball, family schedules adjusted, professional duties pushed aside. The habit we formed, of coming together, grew into a support network. We cheered one another on as we improved, and we agreed to indulge our newfound passion with some pickleball-inspired travel.

Our lesson with Figueroa is just the start of five days of play and exploration. At the Kimpton Rowan Palm Springs, downtown, we spend hours on the hotel’s newly installed courts, playing in front of MisterAlek’s Unity, a vivid 60-foot-long mural of American poet Amanda Gorman. Passersby visiting the 26-foot-tall Forever Marilyn statue on Museum Way, beside the hotel, lean over railings at street level above to watch us play. (Monroe was discovered at the Racquet Club in Palm Springs in 1949.)

We also play at Paradise Pickleball, a 21-court facility in nearby Palm Desert. Arriving as the morning sunshine dries up the previous evening’s rain, we practice what Figueroa taught us. Our serves are deeper, rallies longer and winning shots more

pointed. Two hours later, I wipe the sweat off my face and pack up my bag, noting that every other court has players on it. “This is our busiest time of the day,” says Miles Pelky, who opened the facility in December 2023 with his wife Uta Hamblen after getting hooked on the game.

In 2024, pickleball was the fastest-growing sport in America for the third year in a row. USA Pickleball, the sport’s national governing body, had more than 68,000 courts in its database in 2024, up more than 18,000 from the year before. Pickleball is also growing in popularity as a reason to travel, with courts popping up on cruise ships and hotel rooftops, and tennis courts converted to accommodate picklers who need only pack lightweight paddles and balls to be ready to play. Travel forecasting firm Globetrender calls the trend “racketeering.”

Palm Springs has leaned into the sport. Best known for the Coachella music festival or for its concentration of mid-century

modern residential architecture, the city is also a diverse wellness destination. The boom of pickleball facilities complements several award-winning golf courses, more than 100 miles of hiking trails and many spas, including the newly opened the Spa at Séc-he, owned and operated by the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians. A private thermal-bath experience, the Taking of the Waters, is the perfect tonic to several days on the court. After a 15-minute soak, I take advantage of the steam room, sauna, meditation loungers and outdoor pools to recharge my body and mind.

Of course, we reward ourselves with fantastic meals in between all the action: a leisurely alfresco brunch at the iconic Parker Palm Springs (after snapping many photos of the hotel’s immaculate

lobby); a family-style spread of delicious Eastern Mediterranean specialties at Lola Rose, the patio-facing restaurant at the newly opened Thompson hotel; and a generous lunch at locally loved Sherman’s Deli & Bakery — where the pastrami sandwich on rye is so good, I request a stop on the way to the airport to grab takeout for the flight home.

We manage to sneak in one last court booking at Pickled Bar, an indoor facility in Palm Desert with four courts, pumping music and a snack bar. The no-frills venue is perfect for a quick and scrappy session focused on simply having fun. It is one last opportunity to put into practice all we have learned over the past few days.

The getaway is as good for my mental health as it is for my game. Free of any home obligations, I can focus on my technique. The sights, sounds and warmth of the desert calm me. And the opportunity to be here with friends just as passionate as I am — while meeting locals who are equally excited about the sport — is inspiring. It might even be the start of another good habit: an annual retreat. 

Road Game

Take your pickleball routine on vacation, from themed cruises to training tours.

SERVE AND STAY

Pickleball is now part of the all-inclusive experience at Club Med resorts across the Caribbean. The company recently added 43 courts across five properties as part of growing fitness activities for guests: Ixtapa Pacific and Cancún in Mexico, Punta Cana and Michès Playa Esmeralda in the Dominican Republic, and Turkoise in Turks and Caicos.

CRUISE AND VOLLEY

While most major cruise lines now have courts on their ships, the best way to float your pickleball passion is on a group cruise where lessons, dedicated courts, onboard pros and trophy ceremonies are part of the package. Cruise lines don’t sell these packages so ask a travel advisor to help find yours.

TOUR THE COURTS

Want to marry your love of pickleball with a yen to visit new places? Your travel advisor can book you a pickleball training tour uniting coaching, playing time and sightseeing in destinations around the world, from western Japan to Ecuador and Switzerland.
