Jet-set weddings, multigenerational getaways, ancestry journeys — travel is now the ultimate family affair. It’s no wonder: Hyatt’s 2025 Time Rich Report finds that 82 percent of Americans want more quality time with loved ones — and 62 percent believe travel makes it possible. In this issue, marriage takes the walk down the aisle global, turning wedding parties into reasons to get the trip out of the group chat (page 8). From tying the knot to tracing roots, travelers are using family trees to guide their search for new memories and age-old bonds (page 16). And it’s only natural to want to see the world’s wonders — from eclipses to glaciers and beyond (page 22) — with the people who mean the most to you. Because sometimes, the farther you go, the closer you get.
What’s new and noteworthy in travel for families and celebrations.

Slides plunging from hotel rooms into pools, unlimited ice cream and zoos with every animal imaginable — these are just some of the dream vacation ideas kids shared in a survey by Crayola and Jet2holidays. And it’s not all fantasy. Nearly all parents say their children help plan trips — a fact echoed in an Experience Abu Dhabi poll, where roughly three in four parents say they pick destinations and activities based on their kids’ desires, from astronaut and race-car driver role-play to exploring the worlds of their favorite games and movies.

Families don’t let families miss the boat. In fact, the latest report from Cruise Lines International Association shows that family and friends — not influencers — hold the most sway over cruise decisions. Travel advisors come in a close second, and for good reason: The study also finds that cruise Net Promoter Scores are consistently higher among travelers who book their sailing through an agent.

London
Dreamed up by Quentin Blake, famed illustrator of Roald Dahl books, this charity-led gallery will open in London’s Clerkenwell neighborhood, inviting visitors of all ages into storybook worlds through exhibitions, events and workshops.
Noūs Santorini is one of the latest to join Resort for a Day’s expanding portfolio of hotels where cruisers can swap ship decks for sun loungers and island pampering. Daycations are also making waves beyond the cruise set. Dayuse reports that 70 percent of its more than two million bookings last year were made by locals, and 50 percent were couples or friends. Less spent on rooms means more for other perks. Since partnering with ResortPass, which leads the day-guest market with a reported 95-percent share, Fairmont Kea Lani in Maui has seen a 38-percent bump in cabana sales.

“What is a festival, anyway?” asks travel writer Daniel Stables at the opening of Fiesta: A Journey Through Festivity. Amsterdam
Next July, Amsterdam hosts its first WorldPride, a fitting occasion to mark 25 years of open civil marriage, 30 years of Pride Amsterdam and 55 years since the discriminatory law, 248bis, was abolished — and it all wraps with EuroPride.
On the Fourth of July, the country will celebrate 250 years since John Hancock scribbled his signature onto the Declaration of Independence, with celebrations sweeping across the nation in honor of the historic, nation-founding event.

A century after the death of Antoni Gaudí and more than 140 years after breaking ground, his magnum opus, the Sagrada Família, will be crowned with a four-armed cross, nearly completing his vision and making it the world’s tallest church.

We’ve all spotted brides trailed by cameras in unexpected places — strolling down Pont de Bir-Hakeim in Paris or “trashing the dress” in the foamy surf of some unspecific beach. But now a new kind of client is stepping into the frame: moms. According to Flytographer, a service that connects travelers with local photographers, some 90 percent of family sessions (which account for half of all bookings) are planned by mothers eager to appear in more family vacation photos. “Moms tell me they are excited to finally be in the family photos versus documenting everyone else,” says founder Nicole Smith. Cue the Abbey Road family portrait — with Mom leading the band.

Autistic and sensory-sensitive travelers passing through Dubai’s airports need only look for the sunflowers. To improve accessibility, 45,000 employees at Dubai International and Dubai World Central have been trained to assist neurodiverse travelers and now wear sunflower pins — a global symbol of hidden disabilities. More than one in every 100 people have autism, and a recent Autism Travel survey reports that 78 percent of families with autistic members hesitate to visit new places. But that’s changing as airports introduce sensory rooms, guided walk-throughs and other forms of support — making the global autism travel market “one of the fastest-growing segments,” as per the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards.

Big life events call for big trips. Bachelor and bachelorette getaways, destination weddings and honeymoons turned buddymoons are about more than just the party — they’re about presence. Today’s celebrations blend joy with intention, wellness with wine and culture with connection. Of course, planning one is easier said than done. We asked four seasoned travel advisors — Anthony La Para Santori, Amanda Bruce, Laurie Keith and Samantha Hammond (who’s also a wedding planner) — for their take on how to pull off a celebration abroad that feels effortless, memorable and worth every penny.

Destination celebrations before the big day are evolving. Alongside traditional bachelor and bachelorette trips, more couples are planning “bachelorx” parties — inclusive pre-wedding getaways that bring close friends together, regardless of gender.
The sash-and-tiara formula has evolved, too: Bridal party trips now lean more restorative than rowdy. A recent Expedia survey reveals that 41 percent of travelers are likely to book an alcohol-free trip next year — a clear sign that balance is here to stay.
“We’re seeing some of these celebrations shift into full-scale wellness-infused experiences,” says Anthony La Para Santori of Groupe Voyage Montréal. Think: yoga retreats, private chefs for clean cooking and spa itineraries. “People want to come back feeling better than when they left.”
That doesn’t mean the era of indulgence is over. Pool parties, wine tastings and last hurrahs in Las Vegas are still popular. But today’s bachelor/ette/x trips are less about hangovers and more about remembering moments with your best friends.
“Decide early what the trip means to you. Everything flows from that clarity,” says La Para Santori. “Too many groups run into friction because they try to please everyone,” he adds. “Set expectations up front — from who covers what to what’s optional versus non-negotiable. It saves friendships.”
For all-inclusive resorts, book three months out. For villas or high-demand spots, plan six months ahead. Booking early isn’t just about availability — it also gives guests time to budget, renew passports and arrange schedules.
Once the budget is set, track it. “I’m a big believer in shared Google Sheets for transparency,” says La Para Santori. “It removes awkward conversations because everyone sees the math.” Apps like Splitwise, Settle Up and Splid also make group expense tracking easier.
Find a balance between fullservice and pay-as-you-go.
“One trend we’re seeing is staying at an all-inclusive resort but pre-booking excursions, like a golf trip or spa retreat,” says Laurie Keith, founder of Romantic Planet Vacations. Or flip it: Book a rental or boutique hotel and buy day passes to resorts for access to pools, dining and amenities.

Poolside champagne, wellness retreats and sunset marina strolls are replacing the weddingparty bar crawl.
OPENING SPREAD
From the beaches of Mar del Cabo resort in Mexico to Black Sea sunsets, couples are seeking destinations where the views are as enchanting as the vows.

Less crowded and more affordable than Ibiza, Majorca is a fabulous choice for a bachelor or bachelorette trip, says Samantha Hammond, owner of Jus Adventures Travel Services. Cycle through scenic vineyards for wine tastings, lounge on golden beaches, or catch a ferry to Ibiza’s iconic beach clubs.
With mural-lined streets, legendary honky-tonks and live music on every corner, Nashville is built for high-energy nights. A Batch survey named it the top destination for bachelorette groups, while Las Vegas still leads for bachelor parties.
This Balkan nation has all the glamour of the Adriatic without the crowds of Croatia or the price tags of Amalfi, says La Para Santori. Groups can hike rugged cliffside and mountain trails, charter a gulet, hit the beach or dine in view of the chic Porto Montenegro marina.

Destination weddings have never been more popular. Google searches for the term just hit their highest level in nearly a decade, and according to wedding platform Zola, almost one in three couples are tying the knot away from home. The appeal is obvious: a built-in vacation for guests, dramatic backdrops and — done right — a surprising amount of savings.
“In many cases, with destination weddings, a couple can pay much less for a several-day celebration than they would for a one-day wedding in a big city,” says Hammond. “With many all-inclusive resorts, the wedding itself is mostly funded by the bookings of your guests.”
In terms of trends, “Sustainability and exclusivity are colliding,” says La Para Santori. “Clients want eco-conscious villas, private buyouts or estates where they have control over the vibe while minimizing their footprint.” That mindset may explain why searches in the U.S. for “micro weddings” — with guest lists of fewer than 50 people — are also at an all-time high.
Start with the basics. “Couples should first decide on travel dates and the destination,” says Amanda Bruce, a travel consultant with Destinations Travel and Cruise Centre.
The sooner the better: “My advice is to begin the process about a year prior to your intended travel dates,” says Bruce. “This proves to be the ‘sweet spot’ when it comes to pricing, availability and perks.”
The starting price is rarely the final bill. Factor in extras if you have a specific vision, whether it’s dramatic decor, a live quartet or a fireworks finale. “My destination wedding was about $20,000, and that included my honeymoon,” notes Hammond. “But I’ve seen brides spend that on flowers alone for local weddings.”
Nobody likes sticker shock, so be upfront about costs and what’s included. All-inclusive resorts keep expenses predictable. If you opt for an à la carte stay, covering an extra meal, such as a welcome dinner or farewell brunch, is a thoughtful touch.

Cartagena, Colombia
Here, ceremonies can unfold in leafy courtyards framed by Moorish arches, on rooftop terraces with sunset views or at hilltop convents overlooking the sea. “I love it for its vibrantly preserved colonial architecture,” says Keith.
Portugal
With Portugal rising in popularity, the Azores islands stand out for their wild Atlantic beauty. “There’s been big demand this year,” says Keith. Couples can wed on a clifftop, in a castle or by the sea, with volcanic peaks as scenery.
Maya, Mexico
Move over, Cancún and Tulum. The Riviera Maya’s luxury resorts are increasingly in demand, says La Para Santori. Here, couples are looking beyond the beach, exchanging vows in a jungle clearing, beside a cenote or at the base of a waterfall.

Weddings aren’t just one-night events anymore — they’re turning into week-long celebrations with welcome dinners, beach days and brunches. For some couples, the honeymoon is just the after-party. Enter the buddymoon, where newlyweds invite their inner circle along for the trip.
“Buddymoons are a new trend that’s gained popularity with millennials and Gen Z,” says Bruce. And while TikTok has plenty to say on the subject (#buddymoon has over 480,000 views), the concept taps into something deeper. Couples are marrying later and often have already traveled together, so sharing the honeymoon feels less like a compromise and more like an upgrade.
There’s no set format, but a split itinerary balances group action with couple time. “One of my favorite buddymoon examples is a couple who spent their first week alone in Santorini, then invited friends to join them in Mykonos,” says La Para Santori. “It blended intimacy with community, and it worked beautifully.”
Pick the destination before bringing friends into the mix. This keeps the trip true to you, without compromising for the group. Not everyone will be able to join, and that’s okay. “I always remind clients: You can’t be everything to everyone,” says La Para Santori. “Define the purpose, then build the logistics around it.”
Six months advance planning is the bare minimum, but more time may be needed for complex itineraries.
You don’t need a huge guest list to unlock group savings. As Hammond notes, “A discounted group travel rate can provide you with special fares, and it often includes complimentary passenger travel credits, plus benefits like group check-in and rooms allocated together.”
The best group trips are all about balance — because not everyone travels the same way. To keep the peace? “Flexible activities and group-friendly accommodations,” says La Para Santori. Keep that sunrise hike optional and make sure no one’s stuck on the pull-out couch.

THIS SPREAD, LEFT TO RIGHT
Celebrate newlywed bliss by toasting on a catamaran, gliding on a golden gozabune in Osaka, Japan or roving by land — all in the company of your closest crew.

“Japan is trending for both honeymoons and bachelor/ette trips,” says La Para Santori. For buddymoons, the country offers a dream mix of steamy onsen soaks, forest bathing, izakaya feasts and karaoke nights under neon lights.
The island’s dramatic landscapes make it an instant crowd-pleaser, whether that means exploring lava fields or relaxing in lagoons. “Iceland not only offers unique scenery, but it will also check off that travel bucket list for everybody in the group,” says Keith.
With fewer crowds and more affordable price tags, second cities are a smart option for groups. Tivoli offers Old World charm just outside Rome, while Haarlem is a laid-back alternative to Amsterdam, and Reims holds its own against the City of Light.

At-home DNA tests, online access to public records and expert-led tours are stoking a heritage travel boom.
By Dave Lank

Maybe it arrived as a Christmas gift from a well-meaning sibling. Or you saw a pop-up ad and clicked. But when that DNA kit ended up in your hands, you probably didn’t expect it to turn into a plane ticket.
More than 40 million people worldwide have taken DNA tests from companies like Ancestry and 23andMe, and many are converting results into trip plans — fueling a heritage-travel boom. A 2019 survey of Airbnb users found heritage travel had increased 500 percent since 2014.

Italy encourages roots tourism through a diaspora portal that connects visitors with genealogical services, tours, travel offers — and family ties.
Governments and the travel industry have caught on. Ghana launched its “Year of Return” in 2019, Italy invested $20 million in a diaspora portal called Italea and Kenya introduced its “One Tourist, One Diaspora” initiative in 2024. Tour operators are now offering specialized heritage trips, some even in partnership with genealogy companies to create customized ancestral itineraries.
For those making the journey, the most meaningful discoveries happen away from tourist maps — in rental cars on back roads, in conversations with elderly villagers and in moments when strangers turn out to be family.

THE BUSINESS OF BELONGING
Siobhan Byrne, founder and CEO of Dublin-based travel agency Adams & Butler, which specializes in cultural experiences across the U.K., Ireland and Africa, thinks heritage travel meets a basic human need. “It’s about identity and self-awareness,” she says. “People are asking, ‘Who am I?’ ‘Who do I belong to?’ ‘Who is like me?’ This quest to find out who you are and where you came from — it’s become a new kind of religion.”
Byrne hears from clients who feel strangely at home in places they’ve never seen before. “It’s almost like déjà vu,” she says. She describes visitors tracing their Irish or Scottish heritage, surprised to find themselves knowing traditional dance steps or singing along to folk songs they’ve never heard before. “I actually believe memories live in our DNA — that we pull from previous generations,” she says.

Local tour operators play a key role in places where language barriers can limit the reach of diaspora tourism, such as in Gdansk, Poland.
DNA testing technology allows people to go from saying “I’m Irish” to pinpointing exactly which village in County Cork they come from.
Kensington Tours launched Personal Heritage Journeys in partnership with Ancestry in 2021, starting with a few experimental trips and growing to 21 custom heritage journeys by 2024. The partnership now offers itineraries covering everywhere from Ireland and Italy to Ghana and Japan, each trip built around the traveler’s family history.
Before genetic testing and digitized historical records, tracing your ancestry meant relying on whatever had survived — faded photos, handwritten documents and passed-down stories. It meant crossing oceans to visit churches, cemeteries and city halls in search of paper trails. “Now, with DNA triangulation,” says Kimberly D’Aoust, destination lead for Kensington Tours, “we can get granular.” Technology allows people to go from saying “I’m Irish” to pinpointing exactly which village in County Cork their forebears called home.

Kensington Tours’ process for these heritage trips kicks off months before anyone boards a plane. Professional genealogists dive into marriage, birth and death certificates, and sometimes scout locations in advance. Operators then build trips around those findings, even involving specialized ancestry guides who can navigate everything from local church records to family tombstones.
For travelers, the greatest rewards often arrive when least expected. On one Kensington Tours trip in Puglia, Italy, a woman and her daughter hoped to find the church where her grandmother was married. Instead, their guide found living relatives. “One of their cousins threw them a party,” recalls D’Aoust. “They took them to their family’s olive orchard and set up a massive table adorned with olives, citrus and probably enough Aperol spritz to kill a horse. About 35 family members showed up.”

Heritage Journey to Japan, travelers spend several days exploring Japanese history and culture before visiting sites and locations linked to their ancestry; Kyoto is a must-see city, with many historic shrines and temples and strong links to traditional culture.

“It’s an opportunity to do something that our ancestors couldn’t: connect across generations, across seas and across lifetimes.”
Zbigniew “Ziggy” Pelczyk, a guide with Mazurkas Travel who specializes in Eastern Europe, recalls a recent trip he helped plan for three American relatives. Their grandmother had left Poland in 1908, entering the United States through New York’s Ellis Island and finally settling in Wisconsin. A local genealogist spent weeks preparing for their visit, even leaving his contact information at cemeteries containing graves with their family name, inviting connections to get in touch. The strategy worked. When distant relatives responded, he set up a meeting. The reunion was overwhelming, Pelczyk says, with people in tears, embracing relatives they’d just met for the first time.
LAYING THE GROUNDWORK
“You need at least six months to plan a trip like this,” advises Byrne, and that’s after you have DNA results in hand. As you prepare, stay open to surprises. Your family might not be from where you expect. Names often changed when ancestors arrived in new countries, and family stories can shift over generations. Your ancestral village may now consist of two streets and a few cows in a field. Living relatives may no longer exist — or might not want to meet their long-lost kin.
“What people tend to do is turn it into a kind of treasure hunt,” Byrne says. Wrong turns can lead to unexpected connections. She’s heard of people getting lost, knocking on doors and being invited to the pub to meet someone who knows the local history.
Even when the hunt doesn’t lead where you expected, there’s something powerful about making the journey. As D’Aoust says, “It’s an opportunity to do something that our ancestors couldn’t: connect across generations, across seas and across lifetimes. That would’ve knocked their wool socks off.”

Some of nature’s most dramatic spectacles are best viewed at sea.
By Lisa Kadane

On a cruise around Ecuador’s Galapagos Islands, you can witness whales frolicking, sea turtles mating and blue-footed boobies dive-bombing the water for fish — all from the deck of the ship.
These close encounters are just the tip of the iceberg. A rising wave of phenomenon tourism is carrying adventurers across ice-choked oceans and cerulean seas in pursuit of nature’s great sights, from shimmering night skies and immense glaciers to rarely seen creatures. Some are so remote, they can only be reached by boat — and cruise ships make the perfect setting for family holidays, shared across generations and built around celebrating Earth’s phenomenal beauty.
“Travelers are increasingly drawn to the idea that a cruise can bring them up close to wonders like the untouched landscapes of Alaska or the aurora borealis,” says Jim Berra, chief marketing officer for Princess Cruises.
The Cruise Lines International Association reports that these niche cruises saw a 22-percent increase in passengers from 2023 to 2024 — a trend that continues to grow, led by expedition and exploration cruises that give families a front-row view for celebrating the natural wonders of our world.

The moon will completely block the sun on August 12, 2026, a celestial event visible in totality from the Arctic Ocean, Greenland, Iceland, Portugal and northern Spain. Many cruise lines have planned sailings around this awe-inspiring spectacle, including HX Expeditions, with a 17-day Solar Eclipse Expedition from Svalbard, Norway, to Reykjavik, Iceland.
In addition to witnessing the eclipse in East Greenland’s stunning Scoresby Sound, where the sun will be totally blacked out for more than two minutes, guests will see pristine fjords, massive glaciers and maybe even polar bears.
“We’re seeing incredible demand because travelers want more than a vacation, they want life-changing experiences,” says Steve Smotrys, managing director and senior vice-president, commercial for HX Expeditions. “These are moments that connect people to the planet in a way nothing else can.”

Millions traveled to see the April 2024 solar eclipse visible in North America.

Every winter, gray whales end their epic southward migration in Mexico, settling into warm, protected lagoons such as Baja California’s Magdalena Bay to give birth and raise their young. Cruisers can see the 40-ton, 45-foot-long whales and their calves, along with playful marine wildlife like sea lions and dolphins, between January and March.
“National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions’ vessels are among the few small enough to sail inside the bay’s sheltered waters, allowing guests to get remarkably close to the whales without disturbing them,” says Cara Matthew, the line’s regional sales director for Canada.

Lindblad’s National Geographic Explorers-in-Training program for aspiring adventurers makes these cruises ideal for families or multiple generations traveling together, she adds.
As well as observing the curious cetaceans, families can kayak through peaceful mangrove forests or fat-tire bike over windswept dunes. Similar experiences are offered by Ponant and on excursions with Holland America Line.
A cruise can bring about special sightings of penguin hatchlings in Antarctica, musk oxen in Greenland or giant tortoises in the Galapagos. For a closer look, Zodiacs zip travelers ashore for wildlife viewings that become trip highlights — such as braying sea lions and marine iguanas snorting puffs of saltwater into the humid Galapagos air. Small-group excursions also help reduce the impact on sensitive ecosystems.
“The Galapagos sea lion stands out as a main draw,” says Matthew. “These playful and curious animals are often lounging on beaches or interacting with snorkelers.”
Several cruise lines offer Galapagos sailings, as well as itineraries to view the penguins and whales of Antarctica, Alaska’s grizzly bears and other rarely seen creatures.

Even though 2025 is UNESCO’s International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation, these massive marvels of ice and snow will continue to lure travelers toward the poles next year and beyond. A lucky few will witness the glaciers calve huge chunks of ice into the sea below with dramatic — and symphonic — crashes. The best possible vantage point? A few hundred feet out at sea.
“Most people have no idea what to expect when they see the glaciers,” says Berra. “The magnitude of Glacier Bay — the number and size of the glaciers — and the serenity of it always take people by surprise.”
Though Alaska is one of the most accessible destinations to see glaciers on a cruise, such as Princess Cruises’ 7-day Voyage of the Glaciers, there are South America and Antarctica sailings that visit the spectacular ice masses and bergs of Patagonia and the Antarctic Peninsula.

The Norwegian Sea is about as far away from light pollution as you can get, which makes it one of the best places to see the aurora borealis — especially around the solar equinoxes in September–October and March–April. When the northern lights make an appearance, just walk out on deck and look up: This cosmic light show can appear as a white, ghostly shroud or as a shape-shifting, shimmering display of green, purple and pink.
Holland America Line’s 14-day Arctic Journey & Northern Lights cruise, launching in October 2026 in collaboration with History channel, takes aurora chasers beyond the Arctic Circle to Tromsø, Norway — a.k.a. the “City of Northern Lights” — and into remote fjords to witness the otherworldly nighttime spectacle.
