Editor's Note Hey guys! I hope Halloween was fun! While we’re on the topic of Halloween, I would like to remind you all to bring your Trick-or-Treat boxes into Mrs. G’s room ASAP. Now that we have that information out of the way, let’s get started on our November plans. As you see, we have many events planned, such as the canned food drive, the Giving Back to Teachers Fundraiser, and the Infant Crisis Fundraiser. Remember our motto: “Caring – Our Way of Life.” We should always be there for anyone who needs our help!

Yours in Service, Alisha Arshad

BALTO Carnival RECAP Thank you to those who visited the Key Club booth at the BALTO Carnival on October 13th! We loved talking with learning more about our members because as we all know, our club is very large, so interaction can be difficult at times! If you did not get your point card signed, please talk to one of the officers at the next meeting!

Thirst Project hopes to educate the next generation by arming students with information about how they can be a part of social change, make a difference and encourage others to join in the effort.

Since the 1940s, Key Clubs have worked with March of Dimes to make a positive impact in the lives of babies everywhere. Today, Kiwanis members continue that culture of service by supporting the March of Dimes all year long by hosting service projects, raising funds and educating communities about the crisis of preterm birth.

Members work together by sponsoring fundraising events and conducting service projects at their local children's hospitals. Contact your local CMN hospital and invite a representative to a club meeting to share ideas and create a partnership.

UNICEF is the only organization of the United Nations dedicated exclusively to children. Working with other United Nations bodies, governments and nongovernmental organizations, UNICEF helps to provide for children’s needs in more than 150 developing countries through community-based services in primary health care, basic education and safe water and sanitation.

This November is Alzheimer's Month. For this year's governors' project, help raise awareness for Alzheimer's disease.

Keep T-O Beautiful

The District Project this year is "Keep TO (Texas-Oklahoma) Beautiful." This means that we will try at least once a month to have a project centered around helping the environment. If you have any ideas on projects we can do, please contact the Lieutenant Governor or the President listed in the Contact Information page.

I'm Thankful For... This November is a special one as it is my senior year, and last year in Key Club; I am reminded of everything I am thankful for and all of the opportunities that Key Club has been provided with to help our local community. Every month at the school meetings, I see so many smiling faces greet each other and mingle as we discuss that months events and updates. With a club that contains over two hundred members, it is rare to see everyone at the same time, so being an officer at these meetings truly makes me notice the kind of support that the club brings the school and individuals. Our historian does a great job running the club Instagram and depicting the spirit of the club with every post. This is another way everyone is able to see the spirit of the club as a whole. This month's meeting was discussing events for the month of November, we talked about the Turkey Trot and Trick -or-Treat for UNICEF, both events that only occur once a year and are really something that members of the club look forward to. November is one of the best times to get involved in community since the weather is changing and Thanksgiving is getting closer, so the need for food and clothing increases. This brought our club to start a canned food drive, something that we hope to continue in future years. Things like this are what makes Edmond North Key Club so special. We are always working to make our school and club better by adding new events and tradition that just further strengthen our impact. I am thankful for a dedicated officer team and caring club that can support this type of dynamic.

Not only am I thankful for a strong and involved school club, but also a strong district. District 40W is very supportive and always excited to be involved at district events. Although we do not all attend the same school, we do all love to see each other and get to know others participating in similar events at a different school. The monthly meetings truly symbolize this passion that every officer and member has. As we meet in the cafeteria and talk to other with common interests, we are reminded how thankful we are to have such a supportive club, school, and community that can help each other. I encourage anyone in Key Club or not to reflect back on what they are thankful for, because the people who surround your life will influence who you are and who you choose to become!

Why I Love Key Club I fell in love with Key Club my sophomore year of high school at one of our monthly meetings because I realized how much Key Club is involved in the community and our school. I loved how every volunteer opportunity we were able to represent Edmond North while helping out our community. While volunteering at other organizations like Free to Live, I was able to realize how fun it is and rewarding it is to take time out of our lives to volunteer and help out in our community. I also loved how Key Club was such a large club at North and several kids were a part of it to help volunteer around the community. I have also loved getting to know new people in my school that I wouldn’t have met if it wasn’t for Key Club. Key Club benefits so many organizations around the area with students that just want to get involved and help out other people. Key Club is definitely one of the most unique clubs because everyone can be a part of it. All you have to do is want to volunteer around the community and want to help benefit others lives. In the end it always left me and other people I have volunteered with, with an unexplainable feeling inside of them because it always feels good to simply do good for others that need it. Another reason why I fell in love with Key Club is because it is a great way to get involved in high school while being a super fun activity as well. In high school, it is super important to not only have good grades but also get involved in activities and clubs in school too. You have to put yourself out there and find where you belong.

14

Key Club was my first club that I got involved in at North and that simply was because I really wanted to make a difference in my community through my school and Key Club was the club to do that. If you haven’t yet gotten involved in any clubs in high school don’t wait until the last minute because you won’t want to miss out on the lasting memories. Key Club is definitely the club i recommend to get involved in because you also could get a chance to become an officer and get involved in everything behind the club which makes it even more fun and rewarding!

How I Joined and Fell in Love with Key Club I got to know about Key Club from my friend. She told me it was a volunteering club that’s really big and looks good on your resume, so I kept in mind to join Key Club and go to the booth during Club Day. The Key Club booth was one of the booths that was extremely crowded. I had to squish through everyone to get to the sign up paper. During the first meeting, members were introduced to Key Club, what they do, and to the officers. Volunteering wasn’t my favorite thing to do, because I thought it wasn’t a fulfilling thing. However, as I volunteered throughout the year, volunteering became one of the things that made me contented after doing all the work. Socials were also a big part of why I fell in love with Key Club. When we had an ice-cream social in first semester, I ran to the cafeteria with my friend for ice-cream. All we had to do was chill out, eat ice-cream, meet new people and interact, and get one volunteer point! The ice-cream social made my day that day. As second semester came along, I would be lying if I said I volunteered consistently. No, I wasn’t. I guess I wasn’t motivated enough. I had to drag myself to events.

16

However, when officer application time started, one of the officers encouraged me to apply for the Sophomore Director position. I wasn’t sure if I should though, because I thought I didn’t deserve to serve in the officer position. I wasn’t a great member of Key Club. But, with my friend’s encouragement, I applied for Sophomore Director. We had a candidate meeting soon after, and I found out that I was the only one who applied for my position. Now, as one of the officers in Key Club, I try to be responsible and try to share the joy of volunteering which I found recently, again. This year, my first volunteer was at the Northern Hills Family Fall Fun Fest. I was assigned to “Ring Toss Pop.” I had to stand for about 2-3 hours stamping kids’ hands and telling them to choose a pop. However that week, I actually fell down the stairs so I could hardly walk or stand, but I did not feel a single pain in my foot while volunteering. That was what truly made me fall in love with Key Club. Key Club is such a great club that you fall in love so quickly and easily.

Key Club Memories As a junior in high school that has been a part of Key Club since freshman year, I have gone to many events and volunteered at multiple places in the Oklahoma City area. A few of my favorite memories come from volunteering at the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma and Fall Fun Festivals. While volunteering at the Food Bank, I have packed boxes, sealed bags, bagged different items, and a whole lot more. There is an endless amount of possibilities of jobs to do at the Food Bank. Each time I get the opportunity to volunteer there, I am never working on the same project. Volunteering at the Food Bank is a very fun experience due to the fact that your whole goal is to pack up, store, etc. as many items with your group, and in the end you are told your amount and realize the impact you are helping make in your community. One of my favorite memories is getting to bag peas with my friend and getting to meet new people. Another experience I have had volunteering was at a church’s Fall Fun Fest. Although this event wasn’t benefiting people in need like the homeless, I still enjoyed it. I truly love events like this and Fall Fun Fests at local elementary schools, because I get to help the kids have fun. Events like these are also amazing as to how we are getting to help serve the people and organizations within our community. The last event that truly made an impact of my perspective of Key Club was when our club wrote letters to our teachers.

18

We held an event towards the end of the semester where we got to write a couple of letters to our teachers and delivered them with pieces of candy. It was so cool to see their reaction when we delivered the letters to them. This was such a great event because our teachers are sometimes overlooked and taken for granted; this event showed them that we genuinely care about them and wouldn’t be able to do most things without their help. Whether it be packing up boxes for the hungry in our community or seeing a kid’s face lit up with joy, my heart is constantly filled with delight. It makes me happy that things that seem like little actions in our life can have such a large and positive impact on the less fortunate and people in need.

Rachael's List Hey guys! My name is Rachael Kingrey and I’m one of the Key Club officers for this year! I know that a lot of members probably haven’t started getting points yet (I didn’t have any points in October of my first year in Key Club), so here are my 10 most favorite things about Key Club to maybe convince you to get involved!

1. The PEOPLE!! Everyone likes doing things with fun people, and Key Club has so many awesome members! Every month there are opportunities to do something with friends and to meet new people.

2. The VARIETY-- Key Club really does have something for everyone. There are chances to serve the homeless community, work with kids, work with animals, decorate the school for theme weeks (BALTO, THUD, HOCO, etc), and work with so many great organizations. No matter what your background, skills, interests, and abilities are, there is definitely something we have that you’d be good at.

3. The COMMUNITY-- Key Club really opens your eyes to things going on around you that you might not even be aware of. Plus, it gives you connections and experience working with people in the community, which is really valuable.

20

4. The TRANSCRIPT BOOST-- Colleges LOVE seeing Key Club on transcripts. It really stands out that Key Club members are willing to take hours out of their schedules to serve.

5. The CREATIVITY-- Ten of your hours for the year don’t have to be from anything we give you-- it can be something you have on your own. If you volunteer with your church, that counts! If one of your friends needs tutoring, use that (as long as they don’t pay you, because then it’s not service). Get creative, and let the officers know if you have an idea for an organization we should reach out to.

6. The EXPERIENCE-- Volunteer with an organization that has something to do with a future job you’re potentially interested in, or just something you enjoy! I love working with kids so I volunteer at the elementary school carnivals every year. If you’re interested in social work, or animals, or event management, or really any number of things, there are so many opportunities to gain experience and glimpse part of what it would be like. Use Key Club to learn more about something you’re considering as a career.

7. The FUN-- Volunteering is actually really fun. Find something you’re interested in, go with some friends, and go get ice cream after. Make it exciting, not just another box you have to check off.

8. The RELATIONSHIPS-- I’ve found that you have long lasting, fulfilling relationships with people you serve with and for.

21

9. GETTING OUT OF SCHOOL-- There are a few days throughout the year that get you out of school, and it doesn’t count against your exemptions! RTC is in the fall and DCON is in the spring. Both are open for officers as well as members!

10. The FULFILLMENT-- Service is a really important part of being happy. Giving your time, resources, and talents to others is honestly so rewarding, both for you and the person/people you are serving. Key Club is a really fun way to foster a love of service and provides some really great volunteer opportunities. One of my favorite things about Edmond North is the scale of our Key Club-we have a great sponsor, a great officer team, and really involved members. Because of the resources we have, Key Club is a really great organization to be a part of.
