Editor's Note Hey guys! I hope you had a great Thanksgiving! Thank you to everyone who attended our Thank You Note Social and to everyone who donated cans! Now that we're transitioning into the holidays where the spirit of giving is most prevalent, I'd like to remind you of the Angel Tree project. Please help get presents for the families we're sponsoring this year! Then, be sure to come to the Angel Tree Party and wrap presents with us for the families we're sponsoring, listen to Christmas music, and munch on cookies as we bond closer together as a club! I hope to see you there.Â

Yours in Service, Alisha Arshad

Since the 1940s, Key Clubs have worked with March of Dimes to make a positive impact in the lives of babies everywhere. Today, Kiwanis members continue that culture of service by supporting the March of Dimes all year long by hosting service projects, raising funds and educating communities about the crisis of preterm birth.

Members work together by sponsoring fundraising events and conducting service projects at their local children's hospitals. Contact your local CMN hospital and invite a representative to a club meeting to share ideas and create a partnership.

UNICEF is the only organization of the United Nations dedicated exclusively to children. Working with other United Nations bodies, governments and non-governmental organizations, UNICEF helps to provide for children’s needs in more than 150 developing countries through community-based services in primary health care, basic education and safe water and sanitation.

DCON Groove into Service by Amal Jamshed, Webmaster

Hi! My name is Amal Jamshed and I am the Webmaster for ENHS’s Key Club. When the theme for the 2018-2019 DCON came out, I knew it would be an instant hit to all of the members of the Key Clubs in the Texas-Oklahoma district. The 70s was a decade of huge cultural popularity whether that be with the celebrities, music, dance, art, and so much more. There are many in which the DCON board could incorporate this particular theme during its events. First of all, they should play popular 70s music and songs throughout all of these events. Some well-known singers were Bob Dylan, the Beatles (including Paul McCartney, John Lennon, and more), Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, and so much more. I can already imagine all of the Key Club members jamming out to Michael Jackson’s Thriller! Another way the theme of 70s could be integrated within events is having a disco contest. There were so many dances like the YMCA dance, the chicken dance, the hustle, and the electric slide which many members would love to be seen performed. This could be a great icebreaker for members meeting each other for the first time. One more way to use this theme is investing in a disco ball at the main dinner. Not only would it make the entire hall shine, it would further endorse the ever known disco theme that is always associated with the 70s. I cannot think of anyone who would not be excited at the site of a spinning disco ball! There are so many different ways to incorporate the theme of the 70s in DCON. For decorations, the more colorful the better. The 70s was all about super colorful, bright, and funky designs that are so unique to the decade. For the DCON shirts, tie dye shirts and swirly fonts would further endorse the unique style and feel. Last but not least, there must be 70s themed games. Last year when I attended DCON, there were many games that were out on the first day like ball pits, darts, and more. If the DCON board could manage to create some 70s themed games, that would be a lot of fun. Another idea is to have 70s themed coloring pages where Key Club members could color 70s themed scenes with bright, beautiful colors. The theme of 70s for DCON was an excellent and versatile choice. The best part about the theme is how fun it is. You can’t help but smile when you think of all your favorite singers, dances, games, and more. There is so much that can be done with the theme and I know that this year’s DCON will be one for the books!

Angel Tree by Jessica Xia, Vice President

Every year, the Edmond North Key Club contributes to the holiday spirit by “adopting” a family through Angel Tree. The Angel Tree Program is a program that supports families in need with Christmas gifts. Through the Angel Tree Program, families in need not only receive generous gifts from their local community but necessities like blankets, canned foods, and clothing. The Edmond North Key Club has successfully contributed many times to this program, and every year members and officer alike look forward to this time of year to help and donate to this wonderful cause. Weeks before Christmas, the club selects a family to contribute to. At the monthly meeting, officers announce the goods and gifts the family has requested. Members will then donate gifts, clothing, and food for the Angel Tree family. Before the items are due back to the Angel Tree Program, Key Club hosts a social where members can wrap the presents. At the social, members can wrap the presents, sing along to Christmas and holiday music, eat yummy snacks, and drink hot chocolate. This is the most anticipated social of the year, and many members usually show up to help wrap the presents others have donated. The atmosphere of the room, where the gifts are being wrapped, is full of the holiday spirit and giving back. Members joyfully sing along to holiday music, and the room is filled with many laughs, especially when gift wrapping a soccer ball is harder than expected. As a Key Club member for three years, this social brings back many nostalgic and heart-filing memories. For me, this event and social reminds of what Christmas truly is about: giving back and being with those you love. The holiday season is for giving and truly appreciating of what we have rather than lack. This social also makes me feel like one of Santa’s elves, wrapping up presents I hope others not as fortunate as me will hopefully enjoy. Some of the families that benefit from Angel Tree have students that go to Edmond North, so it is even more gratifying to help students at our school to have a present-filled Christmas. Being apart of Key Club at this time of year is especially rewarding because everyone around us is filled with the joy and generosity Key Club volunteers are filled with. Angel Tree is something I look forward to every year, and I hope many members help and be apart of it this year!
