DCON 2019 Groove Into Service by Rachael Kingrey, DCON Chair

As many of you all know, District Convention (DCON) is coming up! This year’s DCON will be held Thursday, April 25 to Sunday, April 28 in Dallas. For those of you not familiar with DCON, it is a convention held annually for Key Club members throughout Texas and Oklahoma. This year’s theme is “Groove Into Service” and will be 70s themed to celebrate 70 years of Key Club. For those interested in going, here is some information about what to expect and what events will be held. You will be able to meet and spend time with Key Club members from other schools and even other states. At the beginning, there are get-to-know-you activities and throughout the weekend there are several opportunities to get to know them better and participate in activities with them. Elections will be held for district officers for the 2019-2020 year, such as District Governor, District Secretary, District Treasurer, and District Editor. You do not have to be an officer to attend this meeting or vote! Workshops are held to develop different skills relevant to Key Club and leadership. You can choose from a variety of workshops to attend. You will learn more about Key Club, develop leadership skills, find out how you can support charities, and more. Members and officers can vote on potential amendments to the Key Club bylaws and elect the incoming officers. This is a great opportunity to become directly involved in how Key Club operates without being an officer. DCON dances are definitely one of the highlights of the weekend! The only requirements to go to DCON are that you are a member of Key Club for the 2018-2019 school year. Officers and members can go and participate equally. DCON is a super fun weekend for members who want to learn more about Key Club, be involved or learn how to become more involved in Key Club, and have a fun time with other high school students in the Texas-Oklahoma region that share the same interest in service. More information will be available soon. We hope to see you there!

Key Club's Future Benefits By Amal JAmshed, webmaster

My name is Amal Jamshed and I am this year's Webmaster and Edmond North High School. I have been a part of the club for three years now and still plan on being a part of it next year! Key Club is not just a club that I am a part of. I believe that Key Club has helped shape me in to the person that I am today, and helped me become a more considerate, helpful, and hardworking person. I cannot wait to see how all of these benefits will help me in the future. Since Kiwanis has different branches for people of all ages, still participating and being a part of key club as a college student or even an adult is an option for me. Regardless, I think that I have learned and received many traits and lessons that will continue to help me through the rest of my life. For one, I have learned how to be a more compassionate person. Through volunteering, I have met many people of different backgrounds. Being exposed to this type of diversity has made me a more considerate and sensitive person. This will be useful in the future for building relationships that will be long lasting. I have also gained the desire to help others. Key club promotes a servants mindset. I have found myself asking how I can help others if I see them struggling, or if there is anything I can do to make a situation easier for someone. This will obviously be a great trait to have in the future. I have found that even the smallest action can make someone’s day. Whether that is opening a door for a stranger, or complimenting them. Another thing Key Club has helped me with is being more open to meeting new people, being a leader, and learning to improve myself. Like i said before, from going to the District Convention, to being an officer of my school’s Key Club, I have met so many people and made new friends. The memories I will be carrying in the future will remind me to be more outgoing and always searching for a new friend. Also, the fact that I was able to serve as an officer for both my sophomore and junior year have given me many leadership lessons. I was able to make decisions and help so many people. I was also able to learn from my mistakes that I made as an officer to further improve my character. All in all, I am grateful for the many memories, lessons, and friends made throughout my years in Key Club, and I cannot wait to make more. I am positive that these traits will be used in a positive way to further improve myself and my desire to help others in the future.

Since the 1940s, Key Clubs have worked with March of Dimes to make a positive impact in the lives of babies everywhere. Today, Kiwanis members continue that culture of service by supporting the March of Dimes all year long by hosting service projects, raising funds and educating communities about the crisis of preterm birth.

UNICEF is the only organization of the United Nations dedicated exclusively to children. Working with other United Nations bodies, governments and non-governmental organizations, UNICEF helps to provide for children’s needs in more than 150 developing countries through community based services in primary health care, basic education and safe water and sanitation.

Members work together by sponsoring fundraising events and conducting service projects at their local children's hospitals. Contact your local CMN hospital and invite a representative to a club meeting to share ideas and create a partnership.

What is Key Club to you? “To me, Key Club is a great way to interact with the community and improve relationships and character. Through Key Club, I have been able to meet others who have the same drive and passion for volunteering as I do. Key Club has allowed me to help my community in greater ways than I could imagine.”

What is your favorite memory of Key Club? “My favorite memory of Key Club is when I and some of the other officers passed out ice cream sandwiches and popsicles to faculty and students after our Key Club Ice Cream Social. Another favorite memory of mine is the Angel Tree Social, where we wrap the presents for our Angel Tree Family! Usually, there are sweets and hot chocolate being served, and the experience gives an overall vibe of the happiness and warm cheer the holidays blankets around everyone.”

Key Club Across the Country interviewer: Jessica Xia, Vice President Hey! I’m Hugh-Jay Yu, and I’m a senior at Bronx Science, in New York City. I currently serve as the District Liaison for New York District Key Club, which basically means that I serve as the Lieutenant Governor for several divisions in New York State. I met Jessica through the Northwestern group, and our ability to talk about Key Club stuff gave us a shared interest to bond over. It’s really exciting to see how Key Club is halfway across the country, and I just wanted to thank all of you guys for your awesome service! Y’all are doing some amazing stuff.

What is Key Club to you? “When I was a freshman, Key Club was simply a way to pass the time. I’m going to be honest, I joined Key Club because I wanted to find a way to spend time outside of school with the girl I had a crush on. As high school has progressed, however, I’ve come to realize just how big and amazing the work Key Club does. I’ve said the Key Club pledge a lot, but only recently did the phrase “build your home, school, and community” really set in. As Key Clubbers, you actively improve the lives of the people in your community. And Key’s positive impact on communities isn’t only seen in volunteering at a soup kitchen. Key is a club that truly allows high schoolers to get together and bond over how much they love helping others. And I’ve worked with so many different Key Clubs from all over New York - including one from a real county with the real name Schenectady - and the one true constant that all Key Clubs share is their amazing ability to grow communities.”

What is your favorite memory of Key Club? “There’s this one event in the Lower East Side called 'Egg Rolls, Egg Creams, and Empanadas' and it’s the craziest funniest service event I’ve ever done. It’s a cultural festival celebrating the Chinese (Egg Rolls), Jewish (Egg Creams), and Hispanic (Empanadas) heritages of the Lower East Side. Not only was it such a fun time with GREAT free food, it was really cool seeing a community mobilize to throw off this awesomely diverse festival with challah bread making next to Chinese paper lanterns.”

What are some things you have learned from Key Club? “My Key Club experiences have taught me so much about communication. I’d say that’s the most important skill that’s come out of four years at this club. One of my first ever events was an event called “SeniorNet”, where I helped seniors use their phones and computers. Talking with these people and teaching them something I was innately competent at and trying to convey this through the generational gap was initially difficult, but it taught me how to communicate and work with other people. Now, with my work as Liaison, communication remains one of the most important parts of the job, and I’m happy that as I’ve grown, I’ve really improved on it. Dare I say that communication...is key?”
