Our First DCM!

Some of our club officers (Alisha Arshad, Jessica Xia, Elden Bruner, and Maya Ferrell) attended the first Divisional Council Meeting of the school year on July 23. There, we discussed how we could get more people to attend District Convention, officer expectations, and more. We have many goals established for this year that include all of you, so check out our website or attend meetings to get more involved. We can't wait until the school year starts and we have more volunteer opportunities open for you guys!

First DCM of the School Year! I have attended a couple of DCMs, but most recently I attended a DCM at Epworth Villa with the new Lieutenant Governor, Lauren Ross. We plan to do DCMs at least once a month, so all the schools can come together and brainstorm for more volunteer projects. At this DCM, I was able to meet the new officers of the Jones Key Club. We started with icebreakers and conversed about the new school year. This new year, we are striving for more interaction within the multiple clubs and to influence the power of volunteering onto younger kids in middle and elementary schools. We plan to start volunteering at elementary schools during fall festivals and potentially start a regular volunteering program with them. With the combined forces between the schools, we hope to impact our district more positively, which is very exciting. Throughout the DCM, I enjoyed the positivity everyone had for the new Key Club year and all of the new ideas we planned. Working with other schools allows the different Key Clubs to learn about new events, which is beneficial for the community because more volunteers can show up. We are planning to leave a bigger impact on our community and to introduce middle schools and elementary schools to the wonderful hobby of volunteering.

Compared to other DCMs, this one was hosted at Epworth Villa. Previously we had DCMs at Studio Z in downtown Edmond, but our amazing Lieutenant Governor, Lauren, has decided to plan all DCMs at places where Key Clubs can volunteer. Epworth Villa is a retirement community in Oklahoma City, and we plan to have volunteer events there. We plan to help decorate their building during the holidays and to stay in touch with them in case they need volunteers. The next DCM is planned for August 7 at the Regional Food Bank in Oklahoma City. At the Regional Food Bank, volunteers can help package and donate food for the local community. By attending DCMs, officers are able to learn about new volunteer projects in the metro and interact with others clubs. It is so inspiring to be surrounded by others that share the same passion for volunteering. Being apart of Key Club and DCMs is always an enriching experience that I hope everyone has the ability to be part of. Witnessing my peers brainstorm and bring new ideas is such an amazing experience, and it truly makes me feel that we (as high school students) have the ability to change the world, starting with our neighborhood.

How has Key Club made you the person you are today? I joined Key Club my Freshman year at the recommendation of one of my friends. I did not know very much about the club when going in (like many people, I initially thought it had something to do with keys), but I was quickly introduced to what it really was. Volunteering has always been important to me, so participating in a club which revolves around the service of others was what sealed the deal. Ever since then, I have been helping others more often and being a part of the community more which has given me a strong feeling of accomplishment and fulfillment. Helping the community is something that I enjoy going and that is why Key Club is so great. Service to others is a great way to spend your time rather than wasting your time doing nothing. I always like recommending people to join their school's Key Club because I want more people to be introduced to the idea of service. It is a good perspective change to be on the giving side rather than the receiving side, so that is also an enriching experience. One of my favorite memories of Key Club is going to the Color Run and volunteering my time. I met many new people with similar interests and got to join in on the fun.

Key Club is also very welcoming. There are no criteria for joining. All you need is a love for volunteering and helping others! It is a great way to make your resume look good, and it is not as hard as it may seem. It pays off in the end to see how many lives you have touched and helped make easier. It has definitely changed me for the better and I can see Key Club’s influence on me everyday. I think about how I help others more often then just thinking about myself. I would recommend everyone to join. Key Club has not only given me a new attitude for life, but it has also given me great memories that I look forward to look back on. I plan on sticking with Key Club for the rest of my high school career and hopefully after that too in the form of Kiwanis! Join Key Club whenever you can because you will not regret it.

Governors Project The Governors Project is about raising awareness for Alzheimer's disease. There are many ways to raise awareness for this illness, but the two that we are concentrating on are Alzheimer's Walks and Alzheimer's Month. We are planning to fundraise money for and participate in as many walks as we can. The color for Alzheimer's Month, which is in November, is purple, so we could wear purple and spread the word. If you have any more ideas on what our club can do, contact the Lieutenant Governor or the President listed in the Contact Info. page.

District Project The District Project this year is "Keep TO (TexasOklahoma) Beautiful." This means that we will try at least once a month to have a project centered around helping the environment. If you have any ideas on projects we can do, please contact the Lieutenant Governor or the President listed in the Contact Info. page.Â

Service Partner Spotlight

Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals raises funds and awareness for 170 member hospitals that provide 32 million treatments each year to kids across the U.S. and Canada. One way to help them raise money is to participate (and encourage others too as well) in National Pancake Day at iHOP, where a certain percentage of proceeds go to the Network. In November, look for information from Key Club about volunteering on National Pancake Day. Key Club has many partners such as Trick-orTreat for Unicef, March of Dimes, and the Thirst Project. In these newsletters, each will have a spotlight of its own, which includes the impact and what you can do to help.
