Studies have shown that having a pet affords an array of benefits for a pet owner. A person’s health and wellbeing can all be increased by having a furry, four-legged friend in his or her life. But some animals take their role of helping people far beyond that of a typical pet. York County is home to a number of organizations that utilize the diverse talents of these special animals to foster a safer, healthier, and happier community. The moniker “man’s best friend” is not hyperbole, as dogs are known for providing valuable assistance to humans in a number of ways. Humans have utilized dogs’ exceptional talents for searching and tracking for centuries, and dogs with these important skills are using them to help keep York County community safe. K-9 search teams are one of several assets employed by the South Central PA Search and Rescue Team to assist local emergency services and communities in locating lost or missing persons in a variety of situations. “We are a ‘support’ team that local fire, rescue, EMS, police water rescue, emergency managers, and other emergency agencies can call upon to assist in mitigating any incident involving a lost or missing person,” explained Kurtis Timmer, the chief and public information officer with the group. The York County-based team is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to help in situations where ground search crews, K-9 search teams, mountain bike search teams, water rescue teams, and community emergency response teams (CERT) are needed.
