According to Micah Zimmerman, the recent name change for the church located at 5726 Meadville Road, Gap, is twofold. The churchwhich was known as Meadville Mennonite Church since its inception in 1935 - became Welsh Mountain Christian Fellowship (WMCF) at the beginning of the year.
One of the reasons for the name change was confusion with a chapel located in Meadville, Pa. “I got a call from Allegheny College
asking if they could put construction materials in our parking lot,” recalled Zimmerman. “I said, ‘You can, but we are four to five hours away from you.’”
Another reason is to identify the 40 congregation members as followers of Christ first. “Our Mennonite heritage informs our faith journey, but it doesn’t limit who we actually are,” explained Zimmerman. “(We are) identifying ourselves as followers of Christ, and we wanted the community to connect us to that. It’s healthy to get outside the parameters and look at what we are really focused on.”
Now, WMCF is inviting the surrounding community to visit the church and see its recently completed fellowship hall on Saturday, July 12, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. “Come see what’s been built,” said Zimmerman of the upcoming event. “We are hoping people will see options for the community for wedding receptions and other events,” he noted, adding that the entire church building will be open, with a photo display focused on church history. “We will also hold a chicken barbecue,” said Zimmerman.

On June 17, the kitchen at the front of The Factory Ministries’ building was filled with the unmistakable scent of peanut butter. Five of the dozen children present were lined up by the kitchen sink with their hands in the air waiting for Liana Rogers, elementary program and family outreach coordinator for The Factory, to wash their hands. Rogers patiently removed peanut butter, honey, and pieces of oatmeal from each child’s hands while her assistant Julia Jones cleaned the same ingredients from the kitchen island. The food items were the remnants of the granola balls the students had made earlier.
Fun with Food for firstthrough third-grade students in Pequea Valley School District was the theme of the first of four weeks of camp being held at The Factory over the summer. The free Brave Kids Summer Camps are open to all elementary school-age learners in the district with the goals of engaging with others in their age groups and empowering students through summer learning activities. This is the fourth year that the Braves Learning Center has held summer camps with a focus on making learning fun.
Fun with Food was held June 16 through 18 for first- through third-graders and June 24 through 26 for fourth- through sixth-grade students. “We do some cooking,” stated Rogers. “Today we started off making pinwheel sandwiches followed by granola balls, and later we will do some protein pretzel bites.” On the first day of camp, Rogers reported, the focus was on fruits and vegetables. On day two,

students learned about eating a balanced diet, and on the last day, the theme was “being creative in the kitchen.”
Following the cooking lesson, the students moved to the gymnatorium, where Jones and Rogers’ other assistant, Peter Tyrrell, led games. Much running and merriment occurred during that
portion of the camp.
From July 1 through 3, camp was open to students in kindergarten through sixth grade, with sessions in the morning and the afternoon. The theme was “Art & Garden.”
“Ken’s Gardens (donated) a bunch of succulents for us to use, which (was) helpful,” stated Rogers, who added that in addi -
tion to potting succulents, the students created seed balls and planted tomato seeds. “(There were) a lot of outdoor activities,” noted Rogers.
The final week of camp, with activities July 8 through Thursday, July 10, also included many outdoor activities. “It’s called ‘Getting Messy’ camp,” stated Rogers, who noted
the activities designed for kindergarten through sixth-grade students have included making slime, painting with water shooters on canvases, and tie dyeing.

Steve Loewen grew up in New Holland and attended Garden Spot High School (GSHS), where he took part in Garden Spot Performing Arts productions under the direction of Stan Deen.
Nate Deen, also a GSHS graduate, was taken in by Stan as a troubled teen. Their story has now been told on the big screen via the award-winning movie “Brave the Dark.”
In spite of both men growing up in close proximity, Steve and Nate had never met until early 2024 when they happened upon each other in the lobby at Penn Cinema. They got to know each other better over a few lunches at The Split. Both Steve and Nate are self-admitted “car guys,” so, it was no surprise when
Nate offered to help out at the 2024 car show Steve oversees each July in New Holland. The meeting has now proved providential for the pair, who will partner to present the 2025 New Holland Classic Car Show. This year’s 44th annual event, which will benefit the Stan Deen Foundation, will be held in the New Holland Community Memorial Park, 400 E. Jackson St., New Holland, on Sunday, July 13, beginning at 9:30 a.m. when cars may enter the show field. As in the past, vehicles to be judged must be registered by noon on Saturday, July 12. The event will be held rain or shine.
influential in making ‘Brave the Dark’ happen. We want to give back to the community to Steve and those involved.”
“It’s a way to introduce the Stan Deen Foundation to the New Holland community,” said Nate. “This is where it started.”
Josh Graber, president of the Stan Deen Foundation, went even further in describing the connection between the foundation and New Holland, noting, “It’s a way to give back (to the community).” Pointing out that residents of the local area embraced Stan and Nate’s story, Graber said, “The New Holland community was highly
The Stan Deen Foundation became its own entity in late 2024. “Our mission is to educate and inspire passionate individuals to advocate for vulnerable youth in their communities,” said Graber, adding, “A lot of people have resonated with Nate’s story, so there are opportunities to show ‘Brave the Dark’ at different places.” Although still a fledgling organization, the foundation was recently acknowledged on the Pennsylvania State Capitol floor while the body was in session, followed by a question-and-answer session with 96th District
Rep. Nikki Rivera. The foundation has also given money to the Bill Zee Scholarship in partnership with the Touchstone Foundation. “We are doing some initiatives,” stated Graber, who explained that a film workshop for teens was recently held in Kensington, and the foundation donated a camera as part of that effort. As an added special treat, Nate will bring the 1973 Z28 Camaro used in the movie “Brave the Dark” to the show this year. More information about the foundation may be found at www.standeen foundation.org. The 2025 car show will celebrate the Corvette, and Steve hopes to have a number of the cars at the

Kidmunicate Pediatric Speech Therapy, located at 1725 Oregon Pike, Lancaster, has partnered with Heather Majtyka, OTR/L, to start an affiliate company called Kidnecting Potential. Kidnecting Potential, with offices in Wayne and Lancaster, began treating kids on June 30.
Kidnecting Potential aims to be the leader in pediatric occupational therapy services in southeastern Pennsylvania. Heather Majtyka, OTR/L founder and president, is known for her individualized and neurodi-
versity-affirming approach. Kidnecting Potential supports children and families through specialized therapy designed to foster growth, connection and meaningful participation in daily routines, in relationships and in the broader community.
Rather than aiming to “fix” behaviors or developmental patterns, the practice focuses on understanding how a child experiences the world and tailoring support to build regulation, confidence and functional engagement.
The Lancaster location offers families access to clinicians with advanced training in sensory integration, DIR/Floortime, motor planning and praxis and sound-based interventions such as Tomatis and Interactive Metronome. These tools are integrated to support self-regulation, attention, coordination and everyday participation that are always grounded in developmental readiness and relationship-based care.
Whether a child is navigating sensory or motor differences, transitions or regulation challenges, the goal is never to mold them into a preconceived idea of “typical.” It’s about supporting their access to the
relationships, routines and experiences that matter most, whether that’s joining a game on the playground, making it through a family dinner or feeling confident in a classroom.
In addition to one-on-one therapy, Kidnecting Potential offers therapeutic intensives, caregiver education and consultative support to help families carry over strategies into home and community settings. The new Lancaster clinic features a warm, sensory-rich environment that encourages exploration, emotional safety and joy in learning.
To learn more or schedule an evaluation, call 484-367-7131 or visit www .kidnectingpotential.com.
The First Lancaster Accordion Group (FLAG) will meet on Sunday, July 13, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Zion Church of Millersville, 317 N. George St., Millersville. For additional details, contact Miranda Hoffman at 717-940-4762.
100th anniversary in 10 years, began as an outreach effort in a nearby schoolhouse. Sister Mennonite congregations of Old Road, Hershey, and Kinzer held an afternoon Sunday school for the children of the Welsh Mountain. “It was very different here in 1935,” noted Zimmerman, who added that the church is still part of LMC - A Fellowship of Anabaptist Churches.
The current church building was constructed in 1950, with a basement dug beneath in in the 1980s and an elevator added since that time. A mobile unit at the back of the church was too expensive to repair, so in 2024, the church undertook the construction of a new fellowship hall, with doors and windows donated by Scenic Ridge Company of Lancaster. Large windows and doors in the hall allow for a scenic view of the surrounding countryside.
“The goal was to have as much of a view as possible,” stated Zimmerman, who added that the doors to the fellowship hall have become so popular few attendees enter through the front door anymore.
Zimmerman, who has pastored the church since 2005, noted that the calling tends to run in families.
“My father is a pastor. I am
a pastor. My older sister is a pastor, and my other sister is a children’s pastor,” he stated. To that end, two new associate pastors - Burt and Tana Hey - were just added to the WMCF staff.
The Heys are members of the WMCF congregation, and Tana grew up in the church, the daughter of Glenn and Dorcas Martzall, who served as missionaries in Belize.
WMCF holds services at 10 a.m. each Sunday. The church offers fellowships for both men and women, and vacation Bible school will be held from Sunday, July 27, through Thursday,
July 31, from 7 to 9 p.m. each evening. On Sunday, Aug. 24, the congregation will hold a special event called CONNECT. “This used to be called Retreat Day,” stated Zimmerman, who said the focus of the event will be on connecting with the community, friends, and each other. The day will start with worship service at 10 a.m., followed by a fellowship meal and games outside the church afterward. The public is invited to attend and take part.
