Two Chances To Tout Tomatoes

It’s a tradition so nice that organizers have it twice.

The Washington Boro Tomato Festival will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. on Saturdays, July 12 and July 19, at Washington Boro Park, 2010 River Road.

Proceeds will benefit Blue Rock Fire Rescue, and the company’s support group organizes the event.

Admission is free. The festival will take place rain or shine. Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets and chairs for seating. Coolers and alcohol are not permitted.

Food will be served starting at 3 p.m. both days; carnival games will open at 5 p.m.

Border Line will perform oldies and country on July 12 starting at 5 p.m., and Bluestone Bluegrass will play July 19, also at 5 p.m.

Blue Rock’s support group will sell a variety of food, including BLTs and tomato sandwiches without

the B and the L. The sandwiches are so popular that volunteers will use more than 200 pounds of tomatoes and 140 pounds of bacon on both days of the event.

The organization’s menu will include chicken corn soup, hamburgers, hot dogs, barbecue sandwiches, and sausage sandwiches, as

well as soda and tea. Vendors will sell carnival fare such as popcorn, french fries, corn on the cob, funnel cakes, and cotton candy, in addition to milkshakes and Italian ice.

People who attend the festival will have the opportunity to buy tickets for a chance to win prizes.

Three county students are getting an early start on being the few and the proud.

Chase Muchmore and brothers Thomas and Brandon Halbleib are part of the Lancaster County Young Marines, and they are already thinking about pursuing a military career.

Chase is a lance corporal who will be a seventh-grader at Manor Middle School in the fall.

“(Young Marines is) a really cool experience, and you can earn different badges,” said Chase. “It’s kind of like the military. It helps you get ready for the military.”

Chase is following in a family tradition. His brother, Riley McKenzie, was a member of the Young Marines. “I thought, ‘Hey, this is a really neat experience.’ So I wanted to do it,” said Chase. Chase’s dad, Ben Muchmore, served in the Air Force, and Chase’s maternal grandfather, Anthony Arico, served with the Marines.

Every pint matters.

That’s the message from Laura Burke, who is the executive director of the American Red Cross Central Pennsylvania Chapter.

June, July, and August are typically challenging times for the Red Cross’ blood collection efforts. “It’s very tough in the summer,” said Burke. “People are on vacation. Schools have let out. A portion of our blood collected during the school months is from colleges and high schools. Not having those blood sponsors to pull from takes a hit on our blood supply.”

“I saw Riley going though (the Young Marines), and my dad and grandfather were in the military, so I want to join the military,” said Chase. “I wanted to find out a way I could get ready for the military.”

A local organization is doing its part to help alleviate the

Chase said he enjoys making new friends in the Young Marines and being part of the group’s color guard, which has worked many events, including Warriors on the Water, Solanco High School graduation, and a Lancaster Stormers game.

First prize is $500. Second prize is a Blackstone grill, and there will be five $100 third prizes. Tickets can be purchased on both days. The winning ticket will be chosen July 19; ticketholders need not be present to win.

The festival’s organizing committee is made up of Doris and Dan Ditzler, Carl and Brenda Miller, Kathy Fry, Molly Wiseman, and Bobby Howell. Volunteers are needed in the kitchen and to work the food stands. Anyone wishing to help can call Dick Schock at 717-951-6411.

had many more farmers who raised tomatoes. They were part of the Pennsylvania Vegetable Growers Association, which shipped the tomatoes to other areas. The Washington Boro variety is officially known as Jet Star tomatoes.

Schock said the Washington Boro Tomato Festival began in 1958, and Blue Rock took over after four local fire companies merged in 2011. “It’s a big community event,” he said.

Schock noted that the sandy soil caused by flooding of the Susquehanna River makes the region’s farmland particularly fertile. He said that the region once

Wiseman added, “It’s the rich soil down here. It’s almost black looking. Being down by the river, it’s like a natural fertilizer. The closer you are to the river, the more productive the crops are.” She grew up in the area and has attended many tomato festivals. “It’s a tradition to come here,” said Wiseman, who enjoys the BLTs. “You grow up and continue the tradition.”

Dan said that the sunny, warm, and wet climate helps make the tomatoes juicy and extra flavorful.

“When I slice these tomatoes at the festival to make sandwiches, our cutter goes right through them,” he said. “Some of them are so soft that they explode.”

Church Sets Community Meal

Joseph’s Table at Ascension Lutheran Church, 600 E. Penn Grant Road, Willow Street, will offer a takeout meal to members of the community on Thursday, July 17. Meals may be picked up from 5:30 to 6 p.m. There is no charge. Those who would like a meal should enter the parking lot from Penn Grant Road and exit onto Shiprock Road.

addition to firearms safety classes, he has learned how to operate a boat and how to fight wildfires. “There’s a lot of fun stuff you can do,” he said.

Chase’s mother, Cassie Arico, said, “I’m proud that he is in the Young Marines and that he has become a leader and encourages his fellow Young Marines and other youth. He impresses me with his proudness to be patriotic and not be ashamed to show it. He’s developed a servant’s heart and loves volunteering. He amazes me every day.”

Thomas and Brandon are still categorized as recruits, but both are closing in on the rank of private. Thomas will be a sixth-grader at Farmdale Elementary School.

“I wanted to experience what Marines have to do,”

said Thomas. “It’s been pretty good. We get to do some fun activities.” He said he likes making new friends, bowling, and going on hiking trips.

Brandon is a rising fifthgrader at Farmdale Elementary School. “I wanted to get experience and learn more about the Marines and the Navy so I can join the military,” he said. “You get to make friends and go to color guard.”

“As a parent with two boys in the Young Marines, I am very proud of both of them for committing their time and being a part of something so great,” said Thomas and Brandon’s mother, Helesha Shober.

“Both Thomas and Brandon have shown and expressed interest into wanting to go into the military when they are older, and I think it is a great opportunity for them to further explore their interest.”

The Young Marines, a nationwide organization, is for boys and girls from age 8 to 18 or graduation from high school. The group teaches leadership, teamwork, and discipline, and it advocates for a healthy lifestyle through its Drug Demand Reduction (DDR) efforts.

Cassie said that the Lancaster County Young Marines meet the second Saturday and fourth Sunday of the month for regular drills at VFW Post 3575 in Holtwood or the Marine Corps League in Columbia. The Young Marines participate in parades, veterans’ events, and Toys for Tots and compiled over 2,400 hours of community service in 2024 and 168 hours of DDR during 2024, according to Cassie.

situation. The Millersville Lions Club Community Blood Drive will be held Wednesday, July 30, from 1 to 6 p.m. at St. Philip the Apostle Church’s Parish Activity Center, 2111 Millersville Pike, Lancaster.

Call 800-Red-Cross (800733-2767) or go to www .redcrossblood.org and type “Millersville Lions” in the “Find a Blood Drive” tab to schedule an appointment.

The Red Cross said donors can save up to 15 minutes by visiting www.redcross blood.org/rapidpass to answer health history questions on the day of the blood drive. Walk-ins will be accepted, but they could be required to wait.

“(The blood drive) will allow us to reach that many more blood donors and collect that many more types of blood and therefore provide that many more blood products to hospitals in need,” Burke said. “It helps us to have more blood on the shelf for patients who need

Back-To-School Event Planned

The 14th annual Nikki Rivera Back-to-School Event, presented by state Rep. Nikki Rivera and state Rep. Ismail Smith-Wade-El, will take place on Sunday, Aug. 10, from noon to 4 p.m. at Penn Medicine Park, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster.

The event will feature free backpacks, clothing, shoes and school supplies, as well as free haircuts for youths in kindergarten through grade eight. The aim of the giveaway is to prepare students for the school year.

This year, the event has expanded to include the Penn Manor School District, joining the School District of Lancaster, Manheim Township and Hempfield.

In 2024 alone, the event served more than 2,400 students through the generosity of more than 80 partners and more than 360 volunteers.

Parents and guardians must register their children by Monday, Aug. 4, at www.reprivera.com or www.repizzy.com.

Those who should like volunteer are asked to sign up by visiting www.signupgenius.com and searching for the creator’s email, fmiliano@pahouse.net.

Those with questions may contact Miliano at the aforementioned email or Jarissa Johns at jjohns@ uwlanc.org.

it because of trauma situations, people who are going through cancer treatments, and new mothers who have had a difficult childbirth.

Blood is essential to all of those procedures.”

Burke noted that people who meet the requirements can make a power red donation. The Red Cross’ website says, “Power Red is similar to a whole blood donation, except a special machine is used to allow you to safely donate two units of red blood cells during one donation while returning your plasma and platelets to you.”

The Red Cross has partnered with Fandango to provide a free movie ticket to people who donate. “We are really promoting blood sponsors to replenish that blood supply,” Burke said. “Blood cannot be stockpiled and only comes through volunteer donors.”

Blood donated at the Millersville Lions Club’s blood drive will likely be used to help local people. “The Red Cross supplies area hospitals first,” Burke said. “In the commonwealth, we

have relationships with 79 hospital systems.”

If there is a surplus, the Red Cross will be able to pre-position the blood to another region, in the event of a forecasted hurricane, for example. “Rest assured, when you give to the Red Cross, your blood will have an impact,” said Burke, adding that someone needs blood every two seconds and that the Red Cross collects more than 40% of the nation’s blood supply.

“Our team tries to make it easy,” she said. “We provide snacks and kindness.”

Lion Bobbie Frick spearheaded the effort to bring a blood drive to Millersville. “The Lions Club does a lot of different events in the community to give back,” Frick said. “When I joined last May, one thing I really wanted to do was start a blood drive. My mom (Darlene Fago) had passed away from cancer three years ago. During her treatment time, she needed blood, and it was a wait for her to get it. But once she got it, you could

immediately see she was starting to feel better. It was amazing.”

Frick had helped to organize a blood drive while working for Community Action Partnership. “I wanted to keep doing them, so I figured the Millersville Lions Club was a good way to make those happen more often within our community,” she said.

The Lions Club sponsored its first drive in January, and 21 people donated blood. Frick said the club is planning to hold blood drives quarterly. “A lot of the club members are really excited about it because we did have a good turnout for the first time,” she said. “It’s going to be one of our regular events.”

The Millersville Lions Club meets the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month at 6:30 p.m. at St. Philip the Apostle Church. “We’re always looking for additional members so we can continue to serve the community,” said Frick. Email millersvillelc@gmail .com for more information.

Program To Focus on Lincoln’s Funeral Train

The Millersville Area Historical Society (MAHS) will host a presentation titled “The Lincoln Funeral Train in Pennsylvania” when it meets at 9 a.m. on Saturday, July 12, in the Millersville Borough Administration & Police Building, 100 Municipal Drive. Doors will open at 8:30 a.m. and lock at 9:15 a.m.

The speaker will be Scott L. Mingus Sr., a multiple award-winning author, retired scientist, and executive in the global specialty paper industry.

The funeral train carrying the remains of the slain President Abraham Lincoln passed through Pennsylvania on April 21 to 22, 1865, and again on April 28. Tens

of thousands of Pennsylvanians passed by the coffin as Lincoln lay in state in Harrisburg and Philadelphia, as well as untold numbers who watched the train steam past their communities. Using information he gathered from rare diaries and journals and from eyewitness accounts, Mingus will present a detailed account of the train’s passage through the state. He will also discuss the locomotives used, the railroads on which they traveled, the crewmen, and timetables. A question-and-answer session will close the presentation.

Mingus, who writes a blog on the Civil War history of York County, received lifetime achievement awards from the York County History Center and the Camp Curtin Historical Society for his contributions to local Civil War history. His biography of William “Extra Billy” Smith won two national awards for Confederate military history, and The Gettysburg Civil War Round Table presented him and co-author Eric Wittenberg with the 2023 Bachelder-Coddington Award for the best new book on the Gettysburg Campaign, “If We Are Striking for Pennsylvania.” The York County resident was also part of the research team that developed the first commercially successful self-adhesive U.S. postage stamps, and he was a pioneer in the early development of bar code labels. Admission is free, and donations are appreciated. For more details, contact Phil Gerber at 717-8728837 before noon or at pge8507@ aol.com.

Occupational Therapy Practice Opens in Lancaster

Kidmunicate Pediatric Speech Therapy, located at 1725 Oregon Pike, Lancaster, has partnered with Heather Majtyka, OTR/L, to start an affiliate company called Kidnecting Potential. Kidnecting Potential, with offices in Wayne and Lancaster, began treating kids on June 30.

Kidnecting Potential aims to be the leader in pediatric occupational therapy services in southeastern Pennsylvania. Heather Majtyka, OTR/L founder and president, is known for her individualized and neurodiversity-affirming approach.

Kidnecting Potential supports children and families through specialized therapy designed to foster growth, connection and meaningful participation in daily routines, in relationships and in the broader community.

Rather than aiming to “fix” behaviors or developmental patterns, the practice focuses on understanding how a child experiences the world and tailoring support to build regulation, confidence and functional engagement.

The Lancaster location offers families access to clinicians with advanced training in sensory integration, DIR/Floortime, motor planning and

praxis and sound-based interventions such as Tomatis and Interactive Metronome. These tools are integrated to support self-regulation, attention, coordination and everyday participation that are always grounded in developmental readiness and relationship-based care.

Whether a child is navigating sensory or motor differences, transitions or regulation challenges, the goal is never to mold them into a preconceived idea of “typical.” It’s about supporting their access to the relationships, routines and experiences that matter most, whether that’s joining a game on the playground, making it through a family dinner or feeling confident in a classroom.

In addition to one-onone therapy, Kidnecting Potential offers therapeutic intensives, caregiver education and consultative support to help families carry over strategies into home and community settings. The new Lancaster clinic features a warm, sensory-rich environment that encourages exploration, emotional safety and joy in learning.

To learn more or schedule an evaluation, call 484367-7131 or visit www .kidnectingpotential.com.
