Helping Hands Needed To Keep the Cupboard Full

An organization that helps people in the community can use your help fulfilling its mission.

Community Cupboard of Elizabethtown is looking for volunteers for a variety of roles.

The organization, which is part of Community Place on Washington, is located at 61 E. Washington St., Elizabethtown. It operates as a food choice pantry for residents of Elizabethtown, Bainbridge and Rheems to receive groceries free of charge on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“Volunteers are used as shopping assistants,” said Steve Knox, Community Cupboard director. “They

go with the client and take the product from the shelf and bag it and place it in their cart.”

Volunteers are needed in other areas as well, he noted. “Stockroom volunteers mark the dates

“Our hearts are filled with the gratitude the clients show us.”

on the food products, so the oldest products are placed on the shelf first,” he explained. “Volunteers do donation pickup at the local grocery stores, and some stock the shelves before every Wednesday and Saturday.”

Community Cupboard was founded in the 1970s by the United Churches Elizabethtown Area. It moved to its current location in October of 2018.

Residents of ZIP codes 17022, 17502 and 17570 must meet eligibility requirements of the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture to shop at the pantry, which operates by appointment only. Residents may shop once every four weeks.

Because it’s a “food choice” pantry, shoppers may select their groceries. Supplies are stocked based on the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) food pyramid and follow USDA MyPlate recommendations. Food ranges from nonperishables to refrigerated items, and

In 2014, Mable and John Hershey saw a need in their community and felt called to act. They realized a personal care home on Cherry Street in Columbia faced closure, displacing its residents.

“Being the kind of people we are, we said, ‘Let’s see what we can do to maybe keep it open,’” Mable recalled. “We’re people that have a caring heart. We knew these 30 people living there would not have a home to live in if this had to close.”

For the next three years, the Hersheys began the arduous work of turning the home into a nonprofit organization and improving the site.

“Through many miracles of people giving us funds, we were able to make it a nonprofit and make improvements to the home,” Mable shared.

Neither Mable nor John had any experience running a nonprofit.

“We were farmers before this,” Mable said. They relied on their faith and help from friends, forming a board and soliciting donations for the project.

The residents were able to stay in the home during the process, and in June of 2017, Our Home of Hope was born.

The prior owner had chosen the name, hoping to create a nonprofit. “She had chosen that name because she believed for the people who come there, it is their home of hope,” Mable said.

Our Home of Hope can house up to 30 people, none of whom have the funds to enter a traditional personal care home.

“We take low-income, private-pay people who can afford the monthly charge,” Mable explained. “They have to be able to move around by themselves.

Picnic Will Feature Faith and Fellowship

Faith, fellowship and tasty food will be in the spotlight when Ruhl’s Church hosts its annual community picnic. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 19, at the church’s picnic grove, 2766 Newport Road, Manheim.

“Why do we hold the annual community picnic, you may ask? Well, it is a tradition. But it is also for fellowship and enjoyment,” shared Gail Ruhl, picnic planning committee member. “We believe our picnic offers an informal place to see our congregation in action, working and laughing together side by side.”

As Gail explained, the picnic is a major undertaking for the church members.

and cooking our traditional chicken corn soup following a recipe that has been used for generations.”

While the soup is cooking, she noted, volunteers are busy in the kitchen slicing and cutting homemade desserts, dicing onions and peppers to top grilled sandwiches and preparing to dip ice cream. Takeout chicken corn soup, pies, cakes and other desserts will be available for purchase starting at 9 a.m.

“You may bring your own containers for soup, or you may buy it in prepackaged quart containers,” Gail remarked. “The lunch menu includes soup, hamburgers, cheeseburgers, hot dogs, hot sausage sandwiches, homemade desserts, ice cream and beverages.”

folks may choose to eat outside at picnic tables under the trees or inside the pavilion.”

Beyond the community picnic, Ruhl’s Church uses the site to hold worship services in the summer.

“Preparations for the community picnic begin early in the week when members of our church gather together to ready the grove for visitors,” she said. “We make sure all is clean and in working order for the cooking to begin. Several days before the picnic, we cook and debone approximately 550 pounds of chicken. Starting very early on the day of the picnic, we begin mixing

Along with homemade food, the picnic provides a way for church members to connect with the wider community.

“Our church picnic grove has a nice, warm, relaxing atmosphere. Add to that a variety of good food, friends and family, and you get a wonderful place to enjoy the outdoors and each other,” Gail stated. “Children may play on the playground, and

“Grove services will be held every Sunday evening starting at 7 p.m.,” Gail said. “Every evening of grove service starts off with a hymn sing and includes inspiring Biblebased messages that feed the soul. After each service attendees may enjoy a dish of hand-dipped ice cream and conversation.”

shoppers may also select household products and toiletry items.

Food for the Community Cupboard comes from a variety of sources, including donations from community members, as well as local churches, businesses and farmers. Food is also purchased from local stores and the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank.

The need for the cupboard’s services continues to grow, Knox said. In 2021, it served 1,778 individuals. Last year’s total topped 4,800.

Knox emphasized that volunteering with the Community Cupboard is the perfect opportunity for “someone with a heart to serve others and dedication to continue to serve on a regular basis.”

Along with serving at the site, there are several ways for people to support the organization, he said.

“Do food drives with your workplace or organization. Purchase food that is posted on (our) Facebook (page) at the beginning of each month and bring it to the cupboard.

Youth Alive Conference Planned

Purchase Giant cards to aid us in purchasing milk, cheese and margarine that each client receives when they shop,” he remarked. “Cash donations can always be used to help support the purchase of food and support the building functions.”

However people support the food pantry, they will join a group of people who truly believe in the organization’s mission and see firsthand its impact on the community.

“It is a great group to be involved with,” he stated. “We work hard, but we have fun, and our hearts are filled with the gratitude the clients show us.”

The Youth Alive Conference will be held on Thursday to Saturday, July 17 to 19, at the DoubleTree Resort by Hilton, 2400 Willow Street Pike, Lancaster, with a mission to uplift and empower the next generation. The event will feature speakers; lifeskills and empowerment workshops; worship; a youth pool party; a live talent show; youth and adult door prizes; and a vendor marketplace featuring local creatives, including the youngest entrepreneur, 5-year-old Bella Durham, author of a children’s book and coloring book. We do their laundry, provide their food and dispense their medicines, but when we get a need beyond that, our administrator and caseworker help to find the person a more suitable place to live.”

Our Home of Hope offers supportive care to individuals with intellectual or mental health disabilities in a Christian environment. It serves those without the support of family or guardians, emphasizing dignity and compassion.

“Our Home of Hope has filled a ‘gray area’ between costly longterm care homes and traditional nursing homes,” said executive director Robin Gamby, who came on board with the organization earlier this year. “At a time when there is an obvious and growing need for care homes like ours, we are actually seeing them close.”

Prior to 2017, Our Home of Hope operated as a private care home, known as Cherry Street Guest Home. Mable now serves as president, with Gamby and a board that includes local business leaders.

“Our Home of Hope delivers an industry-standard level of support and care, as well as a fulfilling sense of camaraderie and purpose, making Our Home of Hope residents an asset to Columbia,” Mable said. “Our residents enjoy walking around town, shopping in local businesses and listening to Music in the Park.”

This past spring, Our Home of Hope signed up to Adopt-a-Block in Columbia Borough, and residents performed cleanups on the 200 block of Cherry Street, where the property is located, as well as the 100 block of North Second Street. Volunteering in the community and participating in projects like the on-site garden provide a sense of purpose and opportunity for physical activity for the residents.

Although Our Home of Hope aims to provide a loving and safe space for residents, the nonprofit needs community support.

“We could use volunteers to come and help with cleaning or other needs we may have,” Mable shared. “People could ‘adopt’ a resident. Many of our residents

have no one who visits them, so if someone could come and visit with them, that would be wonderful.”

People or community organizations are also invited to bring programs to the residents as well, she said.

Through the Hersheys’ vast community connections, they have formed partnerships with a variety of people and organizations that help support Our Home of Hope. Kreider Farms donates milk, and a community member supplies 40 pounds of bananas weekly.

“We’re looking for someone to donate eggs,” Mable said.

Despite their best efforts, there is still a need for financial support to keep the home operating.

Currently, the home needs $4,500 annually to support a full house of residents, or $375 per month.

“If someone could make that monthly contribution or a one-time-a-year donation, these amounts would help us have the income to keep the home open,” Mable stated.

Our Home of Hope has been the beneficiary of a fall bingo event and

residents participate in an Adopt-a-Block program.

participates in both the ExtraGive and Faithful Give, but major improvements are still needed at the site, and they will be costly.

The organization is working on securing a grant to pave the dirtfloor basement to use the space for storage, and on-site work on its wish list includes improvements to the front porch and installation of a slate pathway leading to the backyard.
