Mural Project Allows Heart Artists To Express Who They Are

Amural is a massive painting or picture portraying a scene or depicting an idea. It typically adorns a large inside wall or the outside of a building.

For artists, a mural is a creative outlet, self-expression, its own art form. For Heart Artists, a mural can be therapeutic, represent inclusivity and become an avenue for connecting with a community.

“I think (murals) are different for everyone,” said Trisha Goldsborough, Friendship Community’s marketing coordinator. “The (Heart) Artists get to see their work displayed on such a public place. It makes them feel like a bigtime artist. Just the community involvement was a positive, getting them out there and meeting other people. It gets them publicity for

Cadet Camp Invites Kids To Explore World of First Responders

You don’t really know if you like something unless you try it. You don’t really know what something is like until you give it a chance.

Cadet Camp provides kids with an in-depth, hands-on glimpse into the professional portion of a first responder’s lifestyle.

“We hope kids want to come out and learn about first responders,” said Kim Herskowitz, Cadet Camp’s coordinator. “It gives them an opportunity to get a little taste of it. It’s an opportunity to try some things they wouldn’t be able to try every day. Maybe we can get these kids to consider it as a career path. It’s about connecting with them while they’re young and seeing if they have an interest. It’s just kind of letting them know what’s out there.”

More than engaging writing, in-depth character development or flawless flow and seamless transition, the key to a good book is subject. Beth Oberholtzer is a talented wordsmith and a thorough researcher, but what makes her books so successful is the theme, the material.

“The topic is the most

important thing,” said Oberholtzer. “What’s the point of writing a book if you don’t have a topic? The author has a passion for the subject. Topics invite themselves into my heart.”

Oberholtzer is the author of four nonfiction, informational books on Old Order Amish and Old Order Mennonite people, their lifestyles, their culture and their

The fifth edition of Lafayette Fire Company’s annual Cadet Camp will be conducted over two days, from 4:30 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 1, and from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 2, at 63 Lafayette Way, Lancaster. Cadet Camp is designed for kids ages 8 to 14 who reside in Lancaster County.

There is a fee involved with registering for Cadet Camp, but there are also scholarships available to defray costs. To register, go to www.lafayettefire.com/cadetcamp before Tuesday, July 22.

“We respond to so many different kinds of calls,” said Herskowitz. “It’s not like a single service anymore. We’re constantly being relied on by the community, and things

their art and expands their portfolios.”

Recently, a mural created by Friendship Community’s Heart Artists - local individuals with intellectual disabilities and autism - was hung on an outside wall of the Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum’s gift shop in Manheim Township. The mural was designed and painted to commemorate Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum’s 100th anniversary.

Friendship Community’s main office studio at 1149 E. Oregon Road, Lititz, before being transported to Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum. The mural took about a week to complete.

“There are a lot of colors and animals,” said Goldsborough. “It makes you happy to look at it. It’s supposed to give you the vibe of the Lititz area and the community we live in.”

We encourage local nonprofit groups, schools, churches, and others to submit news releases. Dated articles, highlighting local activities and events, and undated articles of general interest are used as space allows. Related photographs of good quality, with complete identification, are encouraged.

The bright, colorful mural was officially unveiled during a mural reveal ceremony on May 23. The community mural is designed to be a permanent feature at Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum.

“Art is a way for everyone to communicate without speaking,” said Goldsborough. “We have a lot of artists who are nonverbal or have trouble communicating (verbally), and this gives them a way to talk. It’s also expressing yourself. Everyone wants to be heard.”

The 8-by-13-foot mural was designed and painted on portable, lightweight parachute material at the

“Local muralist Katie (Trainer) worked with us,” Goldsborough continued. “She made an outline on a small piece of paper, and then we went through each step. She traced everything out, and then the Heart Artists painted. The colors were their choices, but they had a general design to follow.”

More than 20 Heart Artists from all over Lancaster County contributed to the community mural.

“They’re really talented individuals who bring out so much joy through their art,” said Goldsborough. “You get that by looking at the mural. Each and every one of them always has a positive attitude. When you look at the mural, you can see how much joy they bring.”

“For me, my favorite part of the project was

meeting people and working with the artists,” she added. “It’s been so rewarding. When we say Friendship Community, it’s true. We’re friends, and we’re a community.”

Founded in 1972, Friendship Community also operates a studio and gallery for Heart Artists at 118 N. Water St., Lancaster. Currently, Friendship Community serves nearly 140 local individuals with intellectual disabilities and autism through its art studios, residential services, day programs and employment support.

Occupational Therapy Practice Opens in

Lancaster

Kidmunicate Pediatric Speech Therapy, located at 1725 Oregon Pike, Lancaster, has partnered with Heather Majtyka, OTR/L, to start an affiliate company called Kidnecting Potential. Kidnecting Potential, with offices in Wayne and Lancaster, began treating kids on June 30.

Kidnecting Potential aims to be the leader in pediatric occupational therapy services in southeastern Pennsylvania. Heather Majtyka, OTR/L founder and president, is known for her individualized and neurodiversity-affirming approach. Kidnecting Potential supports children

and families through specialized therapy designed to foster growth, connection and meaningful participation in daily routines, in relationships and in the broader community.

Rather than aiming to “fix” behaviors or developmental patterns, the practice focuses on understanding how a child experiences the world and tailoring support to build regulation, confidence and functional engagement.

The Lancaster location offers families access to clinicians with advanced training in sensory integration, DIR/Floortime, motor planning and praxis

and sound-based interventions such as Tomatis and Interactive Metronome. These tools are integrated to support self-regulation, attention, coordination and everyday participation that are always grounded in developmental readiness and relationship-based care.

Whether a child is navigating sensory or motor differences, transitions or regulation challenges, the goal is never to mold them into a preconceived idea of “typical.” It’s about supporting their access to the relationships, routines and experiences that matter most, whether that’s join -

The Youth Alive Conference will be held on Thursday to Saturday, July 17 to 19, at the DoubleTree Resort by Hilton, 2400 Willow Street Pike, Lancaster, with a mission to uplift and empower the

next generation. The event will feature speakers; lifeskills and empowerment workshops; worship; a youth pool party; a live talent show; youth and adult door prizes; and a vendor marketplace featuring local creatives, including the youngest entrepreneur, 5-year-old Bella Durham, author of a children’s book and coloring book. have only gotten busier. All these first responders make such an impact in their communities. The public expects a lot of us, and we want to be ready.”

Cadet Camp teaches through a series of skills stations that participants rotate through - six on Friday night and 10 on Saturday. Each skills station is manned by multiple instructors, and this year campers will learn about hose lines, search techniques, campfire and home fire safety, equipment, cribbing and stabilization, communication and washing apparatus.

Cadet Camp, which is STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) based, also features an obstacle course, tours of first-responder apparatus, an awards ceremony, a demonstration of skills for parents and a cookout. Each camper will be outfitted with his or her own personal protective equipment.

“We get a lot of kids who have someone in their families who are first responders,” said Herskowitz. “It’s for anyone who has a general interest. We try to make it so broad that it’s interesting to everyone. It’s for everyone interested in first responding.”

In addition to volunteer members of Lafayette Fire Company, officers from local police departments and

medical personnel from local emergency service teams will be on hand to impart knowledge from their particular areas of expertise. It takes nearly 50 instructors to operate Cadet Camp.

“Some of the instruction is based more on the soft skills,” said Herskowitz. “They’re skills that can be applied to almost any job and skills that you can apply in school. They’re skills employers say they’re looking for. (Participants are) gaining skills that are going to benefit them. We want to build those out and be able to work as a team. We’re looking for kids who show leadership skills and who are able to interact with each other. They have to rely on each other just like we as emergency responders have to when we’re out on a call.”

Lafayette Fire Company, which was formed in 1943, is made up and maintained by the work of 80 volunteers - firefighters, drivers, helpers, support staff and administrative personnel. In 2024, the fire company responded to 615 service calls of varying natures.

“It’s hard these days,” said Herskowitz. “Volunteerism is definitely on the decline. People are being pulled in different directions. It takes a dedicated individual with a certain mindset.”

places in our communities. Her fourth book, “Amish Weddings,” was released in the spring, and it was preceded by “Amish Gardens,” which came out in 2023; “Working Horses,” which first appeared in 2021; and “Plain Meetinghouses,” which was released in 2017.

People are simply intrigued by the Amish and Mennonite cultures. Sometimes it seems that the general public just can’t get enough of them.

“(The Amish and Mennonite) are just like you and I, even though they do dress differently,” said Oberholtzer. “In my books, I do try to shine a light on how we’re the same as the Amish. They make decisions on how to live their lives. The Amish are not stuck in the past. Change happens, but it’s more deliberate and it happens slower, and there are community aspects to the changes.”

Amish weddings are similar to all weddings in

that they differ by culture. Amish weddings, which traditionally are held at the bride’s home, are daylong celebrations that focus on young people and include lots of food, lots of guests and lots of specific jobs or roles.

Oberholtzer will discuss her new book, “Amish Weddings,” at a free community event hosted by St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 700 Pleasure Road, Lancaster, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 7.

“My book (‘Amish Weddings’) is about Lancaster County,” said Oberholtzer, a resident of Manheim Township who was raised Mennonite. “It’s never been put together before. It’s a reference and history. It records this moment in time.”

“I greatly admire the way (Amish) live their lives,” Oberholtzer continued.

“They make different decisions than you and I, and they have a strong,

St. Peter’s Posts VBS

St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 10 Delp Road, Lancaster, will host a True North vacation Bible school (VBS) from Sunday, July 20, to Thursday, July 24, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. each day. The VBS is for children in preschool through those entering fifth grade.

True North will feature Bible-learning activities, songs, games, snacks, Bible adventures, and science experiments. Children will also participate

strong community. You do see a fair amount of self-discipline with the Amish and working for the greater good and not being individualistic.”

Each of Oberholtzer’s books took a year and a half to two years - up to 1,500 hours - to research and write. Her research involved interviews, visits, phone calls and interactions with Amish and Mennonite people who live in communities like Quarryville, Brunnerville, Rothsville, Elizabethtown, Honey Brook, Manheim, Kirkwood, Mount Joy and New Providence.

According to Elizabethtown College’s Young Center for Anabaptist and Pietist Studies, about 39,255 Amish live in Lancaster County. Recent census numbers have Lancaster County’s overall population at 558,589.

“It’s your classic Venn diagram,” said Oberholtzer. “We coexist with each

other, and we benefit from each other. There are fewer family farms (today). There are a lot of jobs where Amish interact with English.”

Through her research and interview processes, Oberholtzer became familiar with and networked with many members of the Amish and Mennonite communities. But perhaps most importantly, she gained a certain level of their trust.

“It’s very important that what I write is true,” said Oberholtzer. “I didn’t just use one source for a subject. People who were in my previous books knew me. Certainly, trust is valuable. I made sure everything was OK, and I do use pseudonyms. Whatever makes them feel comfortable.”

“I learned to know people,” she added. “People were willing to connect me with other people.”

Oberholtzer’s books are available through Amazon and Barnes & Noble.
