Classic Car Show Will Benefit Stan Deen Foundation
BY ANN MEAD ASH
Steve Loewen grew up in New Holland and attended Garden Spot High School (GSHS), where he took part in Garden Spot Performing Arts productions under the direction of Stan Deen.
Nate Deen, also a GSHS graduate, was taken in by Stan as a troubled teen. Their story has now been told on the big screen via the award-winning movie “Brave the Dark.”
In spite of both men growing up in close proximity, Steve and Nate had never met until early 2024 when they happened upon each other in the lobby at Penn Cinema. They got to know each other better over a few lunches at The Split. Both Steve and Nate are self-admitted “car guys,” so, it was no surprise when
Presentation
BY ANN MEAD ASH
Some time ago, Drew DiNardo, pastor of St. Stephen Reformed Church, heard from Piercing Word Ministries, an organization that brings Scripture to life in dramatic form.
DiNardo thought it might be good to have the theatrical ministry visit the church in the future when he was planning to preach on the Scripture that was
the subject of the presentation.
Since that time, the St. Stephen Women’s Ministry began talking about bringing Piercing Word to the church. “Someone had seen (a Piercing Word production),” recalled Dana Snyder, a member of the women’s ministry. “We’ve heard good things about them.”
When representatives of the women’s ministry approached the church session with the idea, DiNardo knew the time was right.
What’s in a Name?
(Formerly Meadville Mennonite) Plans Open House
BY ANN MEAD ASH
According to Micah Zimmerman, the recent name change for the church located at 5726 Meadville Road, Gap, is twofold. The church - which was known as Meadville Mennonite Church since its inception in 1935 - became Welsh Mountain Christian Fellowship (WMCF) at the beginning of the year.
One of the reasons for the name change was confusion with a chapel located in Meadville, Pa. “I got a call from Allegheny College asking if they could put construction materials in our parking lot,” recalled Zimmerman. “I said, ‘You can, but we are four to five hours away from you.’”
Another reason is to identify the 40 congregation members as followers of Christ first. “Our Mennonite heritage informs our faith journey, but it doesn’t limit who we actually are,” explained Zimmerman. “(We are) identifying ourselves as followers of Christ, and we wanted the community to connect us to that. It’s healthy to get outside the parameters and look at what we are really focused on.”
Now, WMCF is inviting the surrounding community to visit the church and see its recently completed fellowship hall on Saturday, July 12, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. “Come see what’s been built,” said Zimmerman of the upcoming event. “We are hoping people will see options for the community for wedding receptions and other events,” he noted, adding that the entire church building will be open, with

Ephrata Cloister Sets Expanded Tours
Historic Ephrata Cloister, 632 W. Main St., Ephrata, will offer expanded site tours on Saturday, July 12, with tour times at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
The tours will offer a deeper look into Ephrata Cloister’s Revolutionary War connection. Each tour will begin at the Visitor Center before guests divide into
smaller groups to rotate through three themed stations: Ephrata Cloister as a military hospital during the winter of 177778; Revolutionary War myths and legends associated with the site; and a behind-the-scenes look at the Collections Storage Building, featuring rarely seen artifacts connected to Ephrata Cloister’s role in the Revolution.
St. Stephen from
“God’s providence followed with the women’s ministry,” he noted.
Now the church is inviting the ELANCO community to experience “The Gospel of Mark,” presented dramatically and word for word from the Scriptures in a oneman show as presented by Aaron House. The event will take place at the church, 249 E. Main St., New Holland, on Friday, July 18, at 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will follow.
DiNardo noted that a sermon series on the Gospel of Mark will begin on Sundays following the event. St. Stephen holds worship at 9:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. each Sunday.
Nathan Titus, pastoral assistant with St. Stephen, reported that he expects the presentation to offer a dramatic journey straight through the book of Mark. “It will be phenomenal to hear and see,” he said, adding, “The book of Mark is short and punchy. It’s action packed, but not at thriller movie level.” Titus went on to explain that the production will focus on who Jesus is - the Son of
God - and what He does.
“If you want to see Jesus in action, it’s one of the great Gospels to go to,” he said of the evangelical text.
Piercing Word relays that the presentation creatively tells the story of Jesus by following him to the places He went and introducing audiences to the people who were called to follow Him. A goal is to move audiences by the “power of the Word of God.”
“I think people will enjoy it,” stated DiNardo. “We just want to be a blessing to the community.”
A freewill offering will be received to help defray costs of bringing the dramatic interpretation to New Holland. Piercing Word is a Lancaster ministry that seeks to engage people in the Word of God by coming alongside local Christian leaders. More information about the organization may be found at www.piercing word.org.

Grocery Outlet To Fundraise for Local Food Banks
The tours will last approximately 60 to 90 minutes and will involve extended walking, including uphill grassy paths. Each time slot will be limited to 40 participants. The event will be held rain or shine.

Each year during the month of July, Grocery Outlet stores nationwide take part in an Independence from Hunger (IFH) food drive to benefit food banks in local communities.
Locally, over the past eight years, Bill and Amy Clisham, owners of the New Holland Grocery Outlet Bargain Market, have raised more than $105,000 for CrossNet
Ministries and Northeastern Lancaster County Food Bank in Terre Hill. The funds were raised directly from customers at checkout. Grocery Outlet customers who donate a set minimum amount are offered a coupon for use on a future purchase.
Last year, local businesses were also offered the opportunity to participate in a Match Day sponsorship. Business sponsorships helped to make a positive impact with customers as the New Holland Grocery Outlet raised a record $24,890 for local food banks.
On average, the store raises approximately $400 a day during its annual IFH Campaign. This year, the event began on June 25 and will run through Thursday, July 31.

Car Show
Nate offered to help out at the 2024 car show Steve oversees each July in New Holland.
The meeting has now proved providential for the pair, who will partner to present the 2025 New Holland Classic Car Show. This year’s 44th annual event, which will benefit the Stan Deen Foundation, will be held in the New Holland Community Memorial Park, 400 E. Jackson St., New Holland, on Sunday, July 13, beginning at 9:30 a.m. when cars may enter the show field. As in the past, vehicles to be judged must be registered by noon on Saturday, July 12. The event will be held rain or shine.
“It’s a way to introduce the Stan Deen Foundation to the New Holland community,” said Nate. “This is where it started.”
Josh Graber, president of the Stan Deen Foundation, went even further in describing the connection between the foundation and New Holland, noting, “It’s a way to give back (to the community).”
Pointing out that residents of the local area embraced Stan and Nate’s story, Graber said, “The New Holland community was highly influential in making ‘Brave the Dark’ happen. We want to give back to the community to Steve and those involved.”
The Stan Deen Foundation became its own entity in late 2024. “Our mission is to educate and inspire passionate individuals to advocate for vulnerable youth in their communities,” said Graber, adding, “A lot of people have resonated with Nate’s story, so there are opportunities to show ‘Brave the Dark’ at different places.” Although still a fledgling organization, the foundation was recently acknowledged on the Pennsylvania State Capitol floor while the body was in session, followed by a question-and-answer session with 96th District Rep. Nikki Rivera. The foundation has also given money to the Bill Zee Scholarship in partnership with the Touchstone Foundation.
“We are doing some initiatives,” stated Graber, who explained that a film workshop for teens was
recently held in Kensington, and the foundation donated a camera as part of that effort. As an added special treat, Nate will bring the 1973 Z28 Camaro used in the movie “Brave the Dark” to the show this year. More information about the foundation may be found at www.standeen foundation.org.
The 2025 car show will celebrate the Corvette, and Steve hopes to have a number of the cars at the event. “There are seven or eight generations of Corvette body styles,” explained Steve. “I want to have two of each body style in the feature area in front of the bandstand.”
Steve also hopes to have lots of other Corvettes in the regular class.
As in the past, the show will feature cars from a number of decades, vintage tractors, and a variety of engines. New this year for children will be Kids’ Pedal Car Drag Racing from 12:15 to 3 p.m.
Cars entered in the show will be judged in 30 classes. Judging for the Spectators’ Choice Award will begin at noon and cease at 2 p.m.
When spectators enter the show by donation, they will be given a ballot to vote for their favorite car and will be entered in the door prize drawing. Door prize winners will be announced at 3 p.m. Awards will include the Carl S. Sauder and Tom Wagner memorial awards, which will be given out at 3:10 p.m. along with the Best of Show and Spectator’s Choice awards. Other car, tractor, and engine awards will be given at the same time.
Music for this year’s event will be provided by two new bands. Smoka Polka will perform from 10:15 to 11:15 a.m., followed by The Nomads, playing from noon to 2:15 p.m.
A variety of food items will be available for purchase from food trucks that will sell items at the event. Among those will be Joe on the Go Coffee Co., which will sell iced coffees and pastries; Hen House Grilling & BBQ; NiCE SiZE FRiES; and Lickity Split. Car owners who have questions about the show may contact Steve at loewen58@yahoo.com or call 717-413-6229.

Pollinator Garden Opens in
New Holland
Following an effort spanning five years, a new pollinator garden has officially opened in New Holland. The garden, which encompasses two acres on the north side of Groff Park Arboretum, is located on the corner of North Railroad Avenue and East Conestoga Street. The borough’s community park association began fundraising in late 2019 to create the garden, and the cost was
approximately $300,000.
The pollinator garden consists of plants and bushes that attract butterflies and other pollinators. Educational kiosks border the garden walkway. An area
also features plaques and memorial bricks in recognition of the many contributions from the community that helped support the garden. The garden will be maintained by the borough.

Participating in the garden ribbon cutting were (from left) Patrick Morgan, Paula Walsh, Dick Fulcher, Robert Johnson, Mayor Tim Bender, Dave Horst and state Rep. Keith Greiner.

a photo display focused on church history. “We will also hold a chicken barbecue,” said Zimmerman.
WMCF, members of which are looking forward to celebrating a 100th anniversary in 10 years, began as an outreach effort in a nearby schoolhouse. Sister Mennonite congregations of Old Road, Hershey, and Kinzer held an afternoon Sunday school for the children of the Welsh Mountain. “It was very different here in 1935,” noted Zimmerman, who added that the church is still part of LMC - A Fellowship of Anabaptist Churches.
The current church
building was constructed in 1950, with a basement dug beneath in in the 1980s and an elevator added since that time. A mobile unit at the back of the church was too expensive to repair, so in 2024, the church undertook the construction of a new fellowship hall, with doors and windows donated by Scenic Ridge Company of Lancaster. Large windows and doors in the hall allow for a scenic view of the surrounding countryside. “The goal was to have as much of a view as possible,” stated Zimmerman, who added that the doors to the fellowship hall have
become so popular few attendees enter through the front door anymore. Zimmerman, who has pastored the church since 2005, noted that the calling tends to run in families. “My father is a pastor. I am a pastor. My older sister is a pastor, and my other sister is a children’s pastor,” he stated. To that end, two new associate pastors - Burt and Tana Hey - were just added to the WMCF staff. The Heys are members of the WMCF congregation, and Tana grew up in the church, the daughter of Glenn and Dorcas Martzall, who served as missionaries in Belize.
WMCF holds services at 10 a.m. each Sunday. The church offers fellowships for both men and women,
and vacation Bible school will be held from Sunday, July 27, through Thursday, July 31, from 7 to 9 p.m. each evening. On Sunday, Aug. 24, the congregation will hold a special event called CONNECT. “This used to be called Retreat Day,” stated Zimmerman, who said the focus of the event will be on connecting with the community, friends, and each other. The day will start with worship service at 10 a.m., followed by a fellowship meal and games outside the church afterward. The public is invited to attend and take part.

Whether a child is navigating sensory or motor differences, transitions or regulation challenges, the goal is never to mold them into a preconceived idea of “typical.” It’s about supporting their access to the relationships, routines and experiences that matter most, whether that’s joining a game on the playground, making it through

Bird Club Sets Meeting, Field Trip
The Lancaster County Bird Club (LCBC) will meet on Thursday, July 10, at 7 p.m. at the Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area’s Visitor Center, 100 Museum Road, Stevens. Jon Kauffman will present “Life in a Nest Box: American Kestrels and Barn Owls.”
Kauffman will provide an in-depth look of the breeding phenology of American kestrels and barn owls through live nestcam footage. Footage will include activities within the box before egg laying begins, parental role in incubation and brooding, and clues to help nestbox managers better understand the needs of parents and nestlings to successfully fledge.
Kauffman promotes conservation through citizen science projects such as Project NestWatch and the American kestrel and barn owl nestbox program at Penn State University’s Shaver’s Creek Environmental Center. He has served as a hawk-watcher for Tussey Mountain Hawk Watch and has also traveled and worked with other organizations such as Cape May Bird Observatory and Intermountain Bird Observatory in Idaho.
The meeting is free and open to the public. For more information, call 717-856-3851 or 717-725-2717.
The LCBC will also offer a field trip to Conoy Wetlands Nature Preserve near Bainbridge on Saturday, July 12, starting at 7 a.m. The trip is free and open to the public, but participants must register by 6 p.m. on Friday, July 11, by contacting trip leader Sarah Gotwols at 717-9403804 or sarahann71880 @gmail.com.
For more information about the club, visit www.lancasterbirdclub .org, www.facebook .com/lancasterbirdclub, or www.instagram.com/ lancasterbirdclub.
