Five local apprentices received top scores at the ABC Keystone’s annual Craft Competition on Sept. 21 at the chapter’s training facility in Manheim. Earning the top scores in their respective trades provides these apprentices the opportunity to move on to the 2020 ABC National Craft Competition to be held March 26, 2020, in Nashville, and they will each receive from the chapter an all-expenses-paid trip to the competition. All competitors received Home Depot gift cards. The fourth-year top-scoring apprentices represented five trades: carpentry, electrical, HVAC, plumbing, and sheet metal. ABC Keystone has a history of producing National Craft Championship medal winners representing the southcentral Pennsylvania area. The 2019 ABC Keystone local Craft Competition top scorers were Jarrad Fulgenzi of Lancaster, sheet metal, Frey Lutz Corp.; Bradley Gerberich of Carlisle, HVAC, Penn State Construction;
Sean Herr of Lancaster, electrical, John E. Fullerton Inc.; Jeremy Spangler of Conestoga, plumbing, Haller Enterprises Inc.; and Brandon Thomas of Ronks, carpentry, Warfel Construction Company. The timed competition followed a similar format as the upcoming national competition, and apprentices were challenged to follow plans to craft projects that tested their skills, knowledge, and attention to safety. The competition has two components: the written test, which counts for 25% of the total score, and the practical hands-on competition, which counts for 75% of the total score. In addition to showcasing their top-quality work, the competitors must also adhere to strict safety standards. The Keystone Chapter’s Pennsylvania-registered apprenticeship program offers education in seven trades and focuses on hands-on training under the guidance of experienced instructors. The City of Lancaster, in partnership with many community benefit organizations and businesses, has received the status of Certified Welcoming from Welcoming America. Welcoming Week took place from Sept. 13 through 22. The City Council was slated to introduce Resolution 44-2019, Recognizing Welcoming Week in the City of Lancaster as Celebrating the City’s Designation as a Welcoming City by the National Welcoming America Initiative, at its regular meeting on Sept. 10. A reception was held after the vote in the Commission Room across from Council Chambers. Health Center, Lancaster Housing Opportunity Partnership, Lancaster Public Library, Lancaster County Community Foundation, Lancaster County Refugee and Immigration Coalition, Literacy Council of Lancaster-Lebanon, Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health, Rotary Club, Spanish American Civic Association, School District of Lancaster, Tabor Community Services, Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology, and United Way of Lancaster County. The City of Lancaster completed an intensive evaluation to earn the Certified Welcoming designation, led by the Department of Community Planning and Economic Development. Lancaster is recognized as the sixth community to receive this national designation and the first in Pennsylvania. Designated communities demonstrate their commitment to inclusion through policy and programming. Lancaster will also be rewarded for its achievement by the Flore Foundation, which will make an investment designed to accelerate local business development.
