Battle of the Boroughs

TFood drive to benefit Octorara Area Food Cupboard

hree local boroughsParkesburg, Atglen and Christiana - are coming together in a friendly competition to collect food for the Octorara Area Food Cupboard (OAFC). The large-scale food drive, titled “Battle of the Boroughs,” was slated to begin on May 19 and will run through Friday, June 20.

“We want to boost donations and remind people of the need.”

Battle coordinators are April Brade of the Parkesburg Parks & Recreation Committee, Bekkah Bitterman of the Christiana Parks & Recreation Commission and Jennifer Grossman, chairperson of the Atglen Parks & Recreation Commission.

According to Brade, each borough will have collection locations around town where people can drop off unopened, nonperishable, unexpired food items. “Each week, they will take the donations over to the cupboard and weigh in,” she explained, adding that a winner will be declared at the end of the competition.

Brade came up with the idea for the first-time food drive to coincide with the end of the school year. “Now that food banks are really struggling, we felt there was no better time,” she stated. “And we wanted to

get the food donations in before the summer months. With school ending for the year, many children will lose the breakfast and lunches they get at school.”

“With Octorara being a Title I school, it provides breakfast and lunch, which is a huge benefit for low-income families in our area,” added Bitterman. “With that not being available over the summer months, the food pantry sees more families coming in. We want to boost donations and

All 4 Paws Rescue, which is celebrating its 16th year of operation this month, continues to seek adopters and fosters willing to open their homes to animals in need.

The rescue, founded in May of 2009 by Kristen Geddes, has saved more than 16,000 animals since its formation. All 4 Paws started as a rescue for special needs animals, inducing hospice cases and senior pets. The effort expanded over the years to welcome pets from kill shelters and commercial breeding facilities.

“Some of the dogs we take from ACCT Philly because they run out of kennel space. We pull who we can to alleviate that and prevent loss of life,” said All 4 Paws volunteer Liz McManus. “Some come from rescue partners in South Carolina. We can place them a little faster than others.”

Those who would like to adopt a pet are asked to complete an application and provide veterinary references and personal references. If there is already a dog or cat in the home, the pets

remind people of the need.”

The coordinators said they were eager to join Brade’s effort. “We started talking about the Battle of the Boroughs at our April meeting. It has happened very quickly,” Grossman said. “(Brade) had this idea, and she wanted to run with it.”

“(Brade) approached our group … and we are really excited about participating,” added Bitterman. “I feel like it is an easy way to give back.”

The OAFC is currently seeking the following donations: pasta sauce and boxed

pasta; canned fruit; noodle and rice side dishes; condiments, including ketchup, mustard and mayonnaise; canned beets; peanut butter and jelly; and baby items like diapers, wipes and baby food.

In Christiana, food donations boxes are located at Moores Memorial Library, 9 W. Slokom Ave., and Sit Stay Play, 28 W. Bridge St.

A one-day food collection drive will be held on Saturday, June 7, at Dutch-Way Farm Market, 365 Pennsylvania Route 41, Gap.

In Atglen, collection bins

are located at Bird’s Nest Salon, 413 Valley Ave.; Atglen Borough Hall, 120 Main St.; Atglen Public Library, 121 Main St.; and Penningtonville Presbyterian Church, 406 Main St. Food will also be collected during the Memorial Day program in Atglen.

Drop-off sites in Parkesburg include the lobby at Parkesburg Borough Hall, 315 W. First Ave.; Salon Boninu, 426 W. First Ave.; Homestead Studios on Main, 100 Main St.; Parkesburg Free Library, 105 West

St.; and the Grocery Outlet, 110 W. First Ave.

Additional information and drop-off locations will be listed at each borough’s website and Facebook page.

“At the end of the campaign, the borough with the most donated food will win bragging rights. Or maybe a trophy,” said Brade. “I’m still working on that part.”

“What makes this fun is this is a competition, but it will benefit the cupboard, no matter what, which is an incredible idea,” Bitterman added.

The community is invited to experience vintage base ball as it used to be played during the Civil War era as the Brandywine Base Ball Club (BBC), a Chester County-based organization, faces the Keystone Base Ball Club of Harrisburg on Sunday, June 1, at noon at East Goshen Park, 1661 Paoli Pike, West Chester.

Teams in vintage base ball (how it was originally

spelled) play the 1860s version of the game, taking the field without gloves and no modern equipment and wearing authentic uniforms. Additionally, only one ball is used during the course of the game. “All of the vintage balls are handsewn, and traditionally you used one ball because they did not have a lot of them,” said Jess Berzon, BBC marketing officer. “They are traditional lemon peel balls, and they have this really interesting pattern.

They are a little bit softer than a traditional baseball, which makes it easier for the players to catch it with their bare hands.”

For spectators, attending a game is a way to experience a living history lesson. “They can cheer (on the players), and the spectators get engaged with the games,” Berzon said, noting that the team members are available to provide information about the game.

“If you ask questions, it’s not like a formalized game, where you can’t talk to the players.”

In fact, players frequently interact with the crowd and explain different aspects of the game. “During one home game, they got people up batting with them. (They invited) people to try and hit,” Berzon noted. “They want people to play and people to learn.”

BBC, which is open to both men and women, is currently seeking additional players. “Players can give it a try before joining,”

said Berzon. “If you are interested and don’t have a lot of time, we are accepting players with different schedules.”

The BBC, which includes players from Montgomery, Chester and Delaware counties, plays a team from Philadelphia and Rising Sun, Md., as well as the Diamond State team from Delaware, among others. “This team is basically the closest (vintage) team for many people,” Berzon said,

SINGING SPRING FOODS

noting that East Goshen Park is the club’s home field. “Most people are in driving distance from East Goshen Park.”

Even though the games are historically accurate, the players still enjoy winning. “The Brandywine BBC doesn’t just play - they celebrate vintage base ball,” Berzon added. “(The games are) as much about camaraderie as competition ... and a tribute to the origins of America’s favorite pastime.”

For more information about the Brandywine Base Ball Club, visit www .brandywinebbc.org or www.facebook.com/Brandy wineBBC. Prospective players may send a message to the team on Facebook, fill out the contact form on the website or email brandy winebbc@gmail.com.

Cortez selected for honor society

La Salle University, Philadelphia, inducted Brianna Cortez of Parkesburg into the Alpha Alpha Alpha honor society - also known as Tri-Alpha or Tri Alpha - on March 6. Cortez is a social work undergraduate student.

Alpha Alpha Alpha is a nationally incorporated honor society that recognizes first-generation college students who achieve academic greatness. The La Salle chapter, which includes students, alumni, faculty members, and staff members, was established in 2024.

must meet to see how they interact.

“We make sure that everything we can do that makes it a safe home is done,” said McManus. “With an adoption, we typically require meetand-greets before we send a dog home to make sure there is no warning signs. Our goal is to adopt to their forever family the first time around.”

“We try to get an idea of what (adopters) are looking for,” added volunteer Liz Murray. “Since adoption applications are good for a year, if they come across a dog they want a month from now, they are still approved.”

Since the program is foster-based, it is especially in need of people willing to give a temporary home to a cat or dog until a permanent home can be found. While the rescue maintains a business office in Malvern, there is not a physical shelter where people can meet dogs.

“We always need fosters,” said McManus. “Our limitations for the dogs we can help are our adopters and our fosters.”

In addition to fosters and adopters, All 4 Paws is in need of volunteers to work at meet-and-greet events. During the events, prospective adopters can meet adoptable pets and learn about the adoption process. “We go all over throughout the community. We go to First Fridays in Phoenixville, to Pickering Valley Feed Store (in Exton) and Yappy Hour in West Chester,” McManus noted. “Sometimes with fosters’ schedules, they

can’t come to an event, but we still want to get the dogs the exposure, so we have volunteers who specifically handle dogs at an event. Anyone who loves dogs is welcome (to volunteer).”

One of the upcoming meet-and-greet events will take place on Saturday, June 7, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Highland Orchards, 1000 Marshallton Thorndale Road, West Chester.

Currently available for adoption are Zeke and Zayda, who are approximately 1.5-year-old miniature schnauzer/shih tzu mixes. Zeke is a male and weighs 18.5 pounds, and Zayda is female and weighs 15 pounds. “They were found together as strays,” McManus said. “We are trying to get them in a home together. They are very bonded.”

Also available is Bella, age 14, a female Yorkie/ poodle mix. “Because of her age, we really hope someone will take care of her in her golden years,” said McManus. “She doesn’t ask for much. She is as happy as can be.”

All pets available for adoption by All 4 Paws Rescue are microchipped, spayed or neutered and up to date on vaccinations and preventatives.

For more information and to complete an adoption or foster application, visit www.all4paws rescue.com. More information about the meetand-greet events is available at www.facebook .com/all4pawsrescue . Those with questions may email info@all4 pawsrescue.com.

Junior high students have a chance to show their ingenuity

Students in grades six through eight are being presented with the opportunity to have their animated display be part of the exhibit at the Choo Choo Barn.

The tourist attraction, located at 226 Gap Road, Strasburg, has announced the first Choo Choo Barn Student Design Challenge.

Students have the chance to see their original, animated display become part of the Choo Choo Barn model train layout and win prizes.

“We can’t tell people to reduce their screen time unless we replace it with something else,” owner Gary Russell said.

Russell stated that the challenge allows students to showcase their creativity and engineering skills “to explore mechanical design, engineering, and animation principles.”

The first-place winner will have his or her animation brought to life by the Choo

Choo Barn staff. The project will be permanently added to the display. The top three winners will receive monetary prizes and also receive four complimentary tickets to the Choo Choo Barn.

The deadline to submit entries is Sunday, June 1.

Students interested in participating should submit their detailed sketches, mechanical movement plans, and a written explanation of their animation to Rae Vanni at rae@choochoobarn.com.

The animation projects will be judged on creativity and originality, functionality and engineering feasibility, accuracy of scale and clarity of drawings, and quality of explanation.

The Choo Choo Barn Foundation sponsors a five-week school program that introduces students to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).

“What we find is when we go and we talk with the kids in school, they are excited to come and see the layout,” Russell said. “There have

That was the genesis for the competition. “What we want to do is to grow this into the junior high market, so they can use their ingenuity to come up with different animations to make them more exciting,” said Russell. “We want to foster that imagination that the kids have and reward them for that. We are very interested in what people are saying

County announces start of project

The Chester County commissioners have announced the start of projects resulting from recommendations generated through Innovate Chester County. The Innovate Chester County first-phase projects will support children’s mental health services; veteran resource communication; affordable housing; and the county’s community transit service, Chesco Connect.

More than 100 county residents were selected to be part of Innovate Chester County’s work groups, following a county-wide

call to action for applications. The applications asked for professional qualifications and personal interests, as well as ideas that addressed county government challenges from a provided list.

Beginning in late 2024, the work groups conducted research and formulated suggestions for the commissioners, the county administrative team, and the steering committee.
