Penn Manor

Penn Manor Quiz Bowl team is feeling just peachy

Georgia. Oh, Georgia.

Ever since last season came to a conclusion, members of the Penn Manor Quiz Bowl team have kept Georgia on their minds.

After a couple of close calls last year, a collection of quick-witted Comets will compete on the national stage in Atlanta.

Senior team captain Brady Mitchell, junior Seth Gansner, and sophomores Natalie Aungst and Eliza Myer will represent Penn Manor in the National Academic Quiz Tournaments (NAQT) High School National Championship Tournament on Saturday, May 24, and Sunday, May 25, at the Atlanta Marriott Marquis and Hilton Atlanta.

Penn Manor will play 10 Quiz Bowl games in the preliminary round - seven on May 24 and three more the following morning - in a quest to qualify for the playoff bracket.

Penn Manor participated in several major tournaments this season. Teams that finish in the top 15% of the field in a big tournament automatically earn a spot in the national competition. Teams that miss that mark but have excellent cumulative results can be invited through a wild card, and that’s how the Comets advanced.

“It’s very difficult to get a wild card spot because they only offer a few around the country,” said Penn Manor social studies teacher Chris Meier, the team’s co-coach along with German and French teacher Angelika Koerner.

Meier noted that the LancasterLebanon Quiz Bowl League is one of the most competitive conferences in the country. He said of the 11 teams from Pennsylvania that earned a national tourney berth, nine are within a twohour drive from Lancaster, including Manheim Township and Cedar Crest.

Penn Manor’s Quiz Bowl team had taken trips to the NAQT in 2013,

Three of the Comets’ esports squads captured a championship plaque at the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Esports Association (PIEA) Spring Finals on April 12 and 13.

It’s more than books on wheels.

The Library System of Lancaster County’s (LSLC) bookmobile delivers knowledge, creativity, inspiration and joy. The bookmobile is kind of like a food truck serving up nourishment for the mind and soul.

“Reading in general is very important,” said Audrey Lilley, the bookmobile’s driver, curator and full-time coordinator. “It’s important for kids to be reading.

It’s important for them to be able to pick up a book and see characters who look like them. Reading can be inspirational, and with retirees, it kind of comes full circle. I think retirees can find comfort in reading. For all people in between, it’s a way to relax and unwind.”

When not on the go to multiple locations all across Lancaster County, Lilley parks the bookmobile at LSLC’s main office at 1866 Colonial Village Lane, Suite 107, Lancaster. The bookmobile

Putting for Miracles will be held June 7

An old professional golf adage states, “You drive for show, and you putt for dough,” meaning that while long tee shots wow onlookers, putting is where the money is made.

In this case, all the dough is going to local charities.

The third annual Putting for Miracles Charity Mini-Golf & Cornhole Tournaments will be held Saturday, June 7, at Leisure Bowling & Golf Center, 3440 Columbia Ave., Lancaster.

Preregistration is strongly encouraged. People will be able to register at 9 a.m. on the day of the event if there are spots open. For more information or to register, go to www.putting formiracles.com or email puttingformiracles@ gmail.com.

The event will begin at 10 a.m. and will end when the tournaments have been completed. There will be prizes for winners of both the golf and cornhole tournaments.

There is a fee to participate in the golf event and cornhole tournament, but everyone is invited to visit the vendors and food trucks and buy tickets for a chance to win prizes.

Food trucks will be on-site selling barbecue sandwiches, hamburgers, hot dogs, french fries, ice cream, and coffee. Event founder David Chobanoff said he is expecting at

least 30 vendors that will sell a variety of items.

Proceeds will be split between Penn State Health Children’s Hospital and the Hudsen Memorial Ride in the first event since Putting for Miracles became a 501(c) (3) charitable organization, David said.

The Hudsen Memorial Ride is a motorcycle ride in remembrance of Hudsen Wolfe, who passed away on Sept. 5, 2017, at the age of 8 after a battle with diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG), an aggressive brain cancer that primarily affects children.

At the suggestion of his friend Ben Tolson, David first became involved by raising money for the Children’s Miracle Network’s (CMN) Extra Life program, where people generate funds by gaming for 24-hour periods.

Three years ago, David and his wife, Stacy, were selected to represent Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center at a conference in Orlando, where he met Travis Miller. Miller had

become both rich and famous after monetizing a social media site called PGA (Professional Golfers Association) Memes, which makes fun of professional golfers, and began holding golf tournaments around the country to raise money for CMN.

Miller spoke about “The Power of One,” and that message resonated with David. “I got goosebumps while he was talking,” David said. “I thought, ‘That’s me in my living room (playing video games to raise money).’”

David introduced himself to Miller, and Miller told David about Play Yellow, a CMN program endorsed by iconic golfer Jack Nicklaus and his wife, Barbara, and the PGA Tour.

In August 2022, three months after that meeting, David and Stacy held a trial event, which raised more than $5,000. The following May, the Chobanoffs held the first official Putting for Miracles event, which generated $10,000, and last year’s

edition collected more than $11,000 despite rain.

He remembers a radio station broadcasting stories of kids who had benefited from CMN. David, who lives in Marietta, is both moved and motivated by the personal stories he’s heard firsthand.

When he was 5 years old, Gavin Gilhool fell out of a second-story window while roughhousing with his brothers and recovered with support from CMN. Gilhool attends the Putting for Miracles events and met David last year. “I told Gavin that his story inspired us,” David said.

A child of David’s friend Jen Gulbrandsen was also a Miracle child.

“I’ve been doing this for a decade, and now some of the kids are graduating college,” David said. “People come up to me and say, ‘You helped me when I was a child.’ I still get a little humbled when I hear thank yous from the family.”

3-0, at Alvernia, and the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate squad downed Dallastown, 3-0, at Neumann University.

It was the first time Penn Manor earned titles in three events at the same tournament, said Penn Manor English teacher Scott Hertzog, who oversees the school’s esports program.

The Rocket League team is made up of Chad Barton, Landon Shank, and Jadxiel Rodriguez Marquez. Jadxiel said it was gratifying to know Penn Manor finished first. “We had good chemistry, and overall, it was good teamwork,” he said.

Rocket League is a “high-powered hybrid of arcade-style soccer and vehicular mayhem,” according to its website.

“It’s really crucial to have good teamwork and good communication when you’re playing that type of game,” Jadxiel said. “Like in real soccer, you need good communication and teamwork to be able to win.”

Zoe Joniec, Dominic Malpica, Nathan Dejewski, Riley Sanders, Jason “J.J.” Rhinier, Seth Barrett, and Wyatt DeFord compose the Comets’ Overwatch squad. It was the third straight

title for Seth, Wyatt, and J.J., who have been friends since kindergarten. “It’s a great feeling,” Seth said, adding that this year’s title feels nostalgic.

Overwatch is a “teambased action game set in the optimistic future, where every match is the ultimate (5 vs. 5) battlefield brawl,” its website says.

“It’s heavily teambased,” Seth said. “You’ve got to work with everyone. It’s not just about how everyone can play. You’re really dependent on strategy, making things work, researching the other teams. … It’s similar to a regular sport in a lot of ways. But it’s a lot different atmosphere, and it’s a lot of fun.”

He started playing video games after getting an Xbox in fifth grade. “I was always kind of good at them,” Seth said. “I like the specific type of strategy with this game, especially. I’m not huge into a lot of other games. I like sports, as well. For me, the team play aspect and the immense importance of strategy and how it’s always changing (is what I enjoy). It’s refreshing. I like

trying to solve problems and win every game I can. I’m a very competitive person by nature.”

Thomas Trussel, Riley Spurgeon, Angel Hernandez, Max Molodin, William Lefever, Gabriel Perkins, and Hunter Vasold are on the Smash Bros. squad, where players’ characters fight opponents on platforms.

Gabriel said the team practices three times a week during school and occasionally online while at home. He enjoys every aspect of being a member of the group.

“I like all of it,” he said. “Practicing with my teammates, who have grown to become my friends. I like the competitive nature of it. It’s high stakes. You’re fighting for everything, and you’ve practiced so much for it. It’s really fun.”

Hertzog co-founded the Penn Manor esports program with Nick Joniec six years ago and succeeded Joniec as head coach in 2021.

“It’s been a fantastic, fantastic experience,” Hertzog said. “We went from being in a small computer lab to kind of having our own

esports area.”

While Hertzog is in charge of the program, each team has its own coach. Tyler Lloyd is the head of the Overwatch team, Clay Craig runs the Rocket League squad, and Micah Emig is the boss of the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate team.

Penn Manor is building quite a tradition. The Comets’ Overwatch team has won four PIEA titles, and the Rocket League team was third at the grand finals two years ago. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was introduced last year.

“We have students who are mentoring students,” said Hertzog. “The older students come in and in a sense shepherd the younger students and teach them how to play as a team. Even though it’s on computers, esports function just like other sports. You need to communicate and work together. It’s not an individual thing.”

The Comets will compete in the playoffs in a bid to earn berths in the Grand Finals, which will be held at Mount Aloysius College in Cresson on Saturday, May 31, and Sunday, June 1.

The fee includes 20 regular games of bingo, along with special games. The event will also include food, door prizes, and giveaway drawings.

To purchase tickets, visit www.eventbrite.com and search for “Resurrection Catholic School’s Designer Bag/YETI Bingo.” Any remaining tickets will be available at the door.

2018, and 2019. Last year, the Comets squad narrowly missed out on an invitation, coming up one correct answer short on two occasions.

On the way home from a tournament in Kutztown last spring, Meier posed a question to his team. “Do you guys have interest in nationals?” he asked. “And they said, ‘Yeah, let’s go to Atlanta.’ They were motivated going into this year, and they did super well. We had a strong team last year, and just as strong, if not stronger, this year.”

Brady echoed those sentiments. “We were very motivated this year,” he said. “We really wanted to qualify for nationals, and we’re very happy that we did.”

Brady, who has been a member for all four years of high school, specializes in history and geography, and he noted, “I think one of the big (reasons for the team’s success) is balance. There’s no one on our team that dominates all of the questions. We all have different things we focus on, and we all work together well to answer a lot of questions.”

Seth agreed that last year’s setback was a setup for a comeback. “We were a lot more motivated this year,” he said. “All of us studied more. We were more locked in, I guess.”

A strong player in the fine arts; science, specifically physics; and social science, Seth said the team meets for an hour each week and spends time practicing at home.

It’s a labor of love. “It’s very fun,” said Natalie, who excels on literature questions. “I like spending time with my friends. It’s a good way to put the trivia I know to use.”

Eliza, who specializes in literature and music, said, “Everything comes up. They could ask you about literally anything, so you have to have a general idea of a lot of things to be more successful. … It’s similar to ‘Jeopardy!’ in a way, and I grew up watching ‘Jeopardy!’ It’s nice to do something like that, even if it’s not exactly the same.”

Meier added, “They are great students. … (Quiz Bowl) is a lot of fun. We challenge them and teach

them new things, like working on the buzzer. They love to learn stuff. They learn a lot in their classes, and they are sponges absorbing all the information. People who see a Quiz Bowl match for the first time are impressed by how much (the students) know and how fast they know it.”

Seniors Eamon Helfrich, Riley Sampson, and Mushna Subba; juniors Arrow Helfrich, Matthew Palmeri, and Thomas Trussell; sophomores Christian Palmer and Curtis Potts; and freshmen Ashlyn Brenneman, Liam Dever, and Eden Karebu were also part of the Quiz Bowl team during the course of the season.

Penn Manor’s squad - Brady, Seth, and Natalie, with Eliza as an alternate - is also having a tremendous performance in the WGAL Brain Busters competition. The Comets scored a last-second comeback win over Cedar Crest in the quarterfinals. The semifinal match vs. Lancaster Mennonite will air Saturday, May 17, at 12:30 p.m., with the winner advancing to the championship match, which is scheduled for Thursday, May 29, at 7 p.m.

In connection with National Volunteer Month, April, SCORE LancasterLebanon is recognizing the impact of its volunteers, who donate their time and expertise to help entrepreneurs start and grow small businesses and to guide them in achieving new levels of success and ultimately creating jobs and strengthening the local economy.

In fiscal year 2024, SCORE Lancaster-Lebanon volunteers helped 887 entrepreneurs, providing them with a total of 2,796 mentoring sessions.

SCORE data shows that entrepreneurs who receive

three or more hours of mentoring report higher revenues and increased business growth. In addition, SCORE Lancaster-Lebanon offers a wealth of resources to guide entrepreneurs in every phase of their small business journey.

National Volunteer Month recognizes the contributions of volunteers and encourages more people to get involved in their communities.

To learn more about local volunteer opportunities or to request a mentor for a small business, visit www .score.org.

Since 1964, SCORE has helped more than 17 million

entrepreneurs start, grow, or exit a business. SCORE’s 10,000 volunteers provide free, expert mentoring, resources, and education in all 50 U.S. states as well

as the country’s territories. The program is funded in part through a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Small Business Administration.
