They all want to do a good job, and one of the ways we can do a good job is to hear from the residents. At this level, it’s not political. Our role is to create a safe community where people feel at home.”

“If there’s a particular project on the agenda, you’ll have people coming in to learn about it,” Morgan Brubaker added. “Sometimes groups might have an issue in their neighborhoods, like speeding or noise. Residents want to know about things like road projects and how they’re going to be impacted.”

Vocal ensemble to perform

LaLaLuna, a women’s vocal ensemble, will present “Love Is All Around” on Friday, May 16, at West Art, 800 Buchanan Ave., Lancaster. Doors will open at 7 p.m.,

with the program beginning at 7:30 p.m.

The performance will feature well-known songs in pop, folk, and jazz styles, all focused on the theme of love. James Lipka will open the program with selections for solo guitar.

The suggested per-person donation will be accepted at the door. The event is BYOB.

Manheim Township covers 24 square miles in area. The township contains more than 16,000 residential dwellings, and about 44,000 citizens reside there.

“I think we’re in really good shape,” said Morgan Brubaker. “We’re getting ready to adopt a new comprehensive plan. Are there problems? Of course there are. But we’re identifying those problems, and we’re getting ready to implement solutions.”

world is broken, it changes the plan. God wants us to be mentally healthy, and He wants us to work in community. The question is, ‘Can we come together on this issue?’”

MHALC will unveil Faith Communities Partnership to the public at its inaugural breakfast from 9:30 to 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 21, at Cork Factory Hotel in Urban Place, 480 New Holland Ave., Lancaster. The breakfast gathering will also serve as the initial workshop in the yearlong, once-amonth initiative designed for priests, pastors, clergy and interested parishioners of places of worship.

At the inaugural breakfast, organizers will announce details on future meetings of the program, which will be hosted by different local faith communities. There is a cost associated with participation in the program, and interested individuals can register at https://mentalhealth americaoflancasterpa .salsalabs.org/faithcomm unitiespartnership breakfast/index.html or by emailing Do at ido@ mhalancaster.org.

“It’s about providing support, education and advocacy to faith communities, so they’re not standing alone,” said Kim McDevitt, who’s been MHALC’s executive director for seven years. “So they have a better understanding of mental health challenges. Pastors have said this is a huge need for them. It’s building a network of support for these leaders. The purpose is to answer their questions.”

The monthly mental health education sessions will be led by MHALC social workers and therapists

and guest counselors. The meetings will offer participants training, support and access to local resources related to mental health.

MHALC’s Faith Communities Partnership is being funded through a grant from the LMC Legacy Foundation.

“We want it to be responsive,” said Do, a resident of Manheim Township. “We want it to be interactive. We want to talk to people in attendance and learn about their experiences. We want to ask them what will be helpful. We want to see what the lay of the land looks like in Lancaster County.”

“Most pastors don’t have a background in counseling,” she added. “We’re not training them to be counselors. We’re training them to identify mental health issues and give them information that will help them lead their church members to the right sources. A lot of times, these things are hidden. We want (church leaders) to be able to talk about mental health issues from the pulpit.”

There are any number of resources available in the Lancaster County community for people experiencing mental health issues. Faith communities and churches are places where individuals can seek help.

“When someone is experiencing a mental health

crisis, they might not go anywhere, or they may be waiting for someone to notice,” said Do. “They may go to their pastor and talk about it. For some people, their faith is a source of support. People ask for help from people who they are connected to. Sometimes (church leaders) don’t know what to do. They may not know how to address a mental health issue. Right now, there are delays in getting mental health services. Churches can be a bridge for that.”

Located at 245 Butler Ave., Suite 204, Lancaster, MHALC engages in similar partnerships with schools, companies, hospital systems, police departments and service organizations to provide education, insight, support and resources for mental health issues.

“We are the hub and advocates for mental health services in Lancaster County,” said McDevitt, a resident of Manheim Township. “(Faith communities are) a group we have identified. We want to make the mental health system in Lancaster County better. There are people who are physically ill. Mental illness is an illness of the brain. We need to be thinking of it in the same way. That’s where the education comes in.”

It’s a community space connecting producers with consumers. It’s also a method for entrepreneurs to sell their wares.

In Lititz’s downtown business district, “market” is both a noun and a verb.

“For most of the vendors, (local entrepreneurship is) a full-time thing,” said Emily Allen, the executive director of Venture Lititz, which sponsors the annual farmers market downtown. “They do stands and markets.

For some, it might be a side business. But it’s a great way for them to introduce themselves to the community. In this day and age, having a brick-and-mortar building might not be feasible. We want to give the vendors an opportunity to show what they can do and share the things they make with the people from Lititz.”

Venture Lititz will open this year’s edition of its annual farmers market at 3 p.m. on Thursday, May 15. Vendors will offer their wares on the east

Bookmobile

equipped with a wheelchair lift and portable book carts.

“If we can fit into the space, we’ll come to it,” said Lilley. “When you get up in there and turn to your left, it’s just walls of books. We can tailor the materials to the crowd we’re going to see. We have shelves of cool stuff. It’s a neat operation. I really love it.”

In an effort to provide reading materials to local citizens who experience difficulties getting to their community libraries, the LSLC bookmobile visits more than 45 unique locations each month, places like schools, retirement communities, churches, local events and child care centers. The stops are typically an hour to 90 minutes in length and usually well attended.

“We want to serve patrons in the community who might struggle to reach their brick-andmortar libraries,” said Lilley, a resident of West Lampeter Township. “We’re able to meet them where they’re at. We’re always looking for new places to go. We want to talk to patrons. We want to hear what they want to read. That’s how we build our collection.”

“A lot of it is people reaching out to us for bookmobile services,” continued Lilley. “Most of the communities will reach out to us and let us know they’re interested.”

In 2024, 1,600 LSLC bookmobile patrons checked out 15,539 pieces of material.

ting to know patrons in that way is really fun.”

“We offer all kinds of services,” said Lilley. “We can help people look up something. We can print on-site. We can refer people to their local libraries. People can check out books and return books, even if they didn’t get them from the bookmobile. However we can help to bridge that connection.”

The birth of the LSLC bookmobile can be traced back to the 1960s. The current bookmobile is the sixth vehicle to serve the program.

While the bookmobile is one-of-a-kind, it’s not all that famous.

The bookmobile has the capacity to house 2,000 pieces of reading materials, including fiction and nonfiction books, New York Times bestsellers, children’s books, young readers’ book series, the works of local authors, books about local history and events, religious books, holiday and seasonal books, and large-print books. But the bookmobile also rolls with DVDs, music, audio books, kits, puppets and brain teasers.

“I really love when someone’s not sure what they want and I can help them find it,” Lilley continued. “Then having them come back and tell me if they liked it or not. Just get -

“Some people do know about the bookmobile,” said Lilley. “A lot of people will tell me they visited the bookmobile when they were kids. There is an element of nostalgia to it. I’ve also talked to people who said that they didn’t know the bookmobile was still running. I also meet people at a lot of stops who haven’t been to their closest libraries in a while. We’re always trying to get the word out about it.”

end of Lititz Springs Park, at 24 N. Broad St., Lititz, until 7 p.m.

The farmers market will operate every Thursday until Oct. 16. The recurring event, which will start at 3 p.m. during the months of May and June, at 4 p.m. during the months of July and August and at 3 p.m. during the months of September and October, is free to attend, and shoppers are encouraged to bring their own bags and baskets.

“It’s happy,” said Allen. “You can plan on getting your meals for the week, and you can sit in the park. It’s a way to sit outside and enjoy Lititz this time of the year. It’s pet friendly. It’s kid friendly. There are always people there.”

The Venture Lititz farmers market is a bit more diverse than the traditional farmers market. Each week will feature at least 15 vendors, including two dedicated to produce, a few offering prepared foods and a couple of food trucks. Also available will be baked goods, eggs, dog treats, plants and flowers.

The majority of the vendors are from the Lititz area.

“It’s different, interesting foods that we don’t have downtown,” said Allen. “People can try them and see if they like them. The goal is to bring people into town and provide a place that’s easily walkable for people to get produce. Some vendors have started at the farmers market and ended up having businesses downtown.”

The farmers market takes on a festival vibe with the presence of live music, crafts, a kids’ stand and other children’s activities.

“My favorite part of the farmers market is taking my kid there,” said Allen. “It’s safe. It’s welcoming. I like seeing her interact with vendors. She can run around, and she knows everybody. Her friends from school end up coming. Each week we run into somebody we haven’t seen in a while.”

In addition to offering a unique experience, the items and produce offered each week at the Venture Lititz farmers market could change as the seasons

change.

“Once you come one time, you’ll want to be there every week,” said Allen. “It’s a fun Thursday, and I love seeing all the kids. It’s one of my favorite things that we do.”

“One of the things that makes Lititz unique is how connected

everyone is,” added Allen. “That’s what makes this event so special. Things like the farmers market is more for people who are local, and it brings them together.”

Venture Lititz’s next event, Taste of Lititz, is scheduled for Friday, June 6. The downtown business-promoting organization will also conduct its Apoca-Lititz 5K on Saturday, Oct. 25, its annual gala near the end of the year, its annual Fire & Ice winter carnival in February of 2026 and its yearly spring cleanup next April.

“(The farmers market) is not a money-making thing for us,” said Allen. “The point of Venture Lititz is to bring people into Lititz and showcase the downtown. This is another way to do that and to keep people local. Our ultimate goal is to bring more people in. We do it on Thursdays because it doesn’t compete with other businesses downtown.”

Currently, there are nearly 60 businesses open in Lititz’s downtown shopping district.

Choir Festival to benefit MTAA

St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church will host a Choir Festival on Sunday, May 18, at 4 p.m., for the benefit of the Manheim Township Ambulance Association (MTAA). The event will feature choruses of adults and children from the community under the direction of Tom Berdos, music director at St. Peter’s, and accompanied by Deborah Berdos, St. Peter’s organist. The program will include music from many traditions, including gospel, popular hymns, contemporary and classical sacred music. The concert will also feature professional singers Christyan Seay, tenor, and Richard Zuch, bass. Special instrumental music will be provided by members of the Lancaster British Brass Band and Auscultation Brass;

Joselyn Crosby, flutist; and Gary Troxell, clarinetist. According to Shawn Watrous, director of operations for MTAA, funds from last year’s Choir Festival allowed MTAA to replace life-saving equipment, including advanced and intermediate life support first-in bags and oxygen caddies.

St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church is located at 10 Delp Road, Lancaster. The Choir Festival is part of St. Peter’s Musical Arts Series. For more information about the series, service times and other events at St. Peter’s, visit www .stpeterslutheran.org or call 717-569-9211. Those with questions about the Choir Festival may contact Tom at tomberdos@st peterslutheran.org.

Proceeds from last year’s Choir Festival were used by the Manheim Township Ambulance Association to purchase lifesaving equipment.
