Birdsboro Farmers Market opens for 10th season

The Birdsboro Farmers Market, offering a range of goods from fresh produce and honey to homemade jewelry, crafts and pet items, opened for its 10th season on May 10. The outdoor market is open every other Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon through Oct. 25 at Main Bird Park, 226 N. Water St., Birdsboro.

The farmers market committee presents the event, with support from the Birdsboro Parks and Recreation Department. “We also have a sponsor this year,” said department president Christen Thompson. “American Legion Post 626 sponsors the market along with Stonersville Social Club to help keep costs low for our vendors and bring in more entertainment.”

This year’s market includes returning favorites, as well as new vendors. “We have KJM Produce and New Life Coffee Company joining us for their first season,” Thompson said. “We have MA3D4U Fidget Factory, who makes fidgets from a 3D printer and Hidden Pearl Homestead.” Hidden Pearl Homestead offers tomato and hot pepper plants, strawberry plants and organic chicken and quail eggs.

Novella Freeman, 16, a 10th-grader at Twin Valley High School and a member of BSA Scout Troop 543G, will hold a celiac awareness event on Saturday, May 31, at 5 p.m. at Robeson Lutheran Church, where the troop meets. Attendees will learn about celiac disease and enjoy a gluten-free meal.

Novella explained that people who have celiac disease are unable to eat gluten, a protein found in wheat, rye and barley.

Organizers include (from left) Chris Eckert, a member of the farmers market committee, and Debbie Mettler and Christen Thompson from the Birdsboro Parks and Recreation Department.

Students sought for leadership program

Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful, in partnership with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), is seeking civic and environmental leaders in 10th through 12th grades to keep Pennsylvania clean and beautiful through the

Young Ambassadors of Pennsylvania program. One of the program’s aims is to attract the next generation of leaders to careers in state government. In December, the administration announced substantial increases in

the number of Generation Z (Gen Z) and millennial employees who have joined the commonwealth workforce in recent years. This partnership, now in its fourth year, seeks to build on that success.

The Young Ambassadors

program empowers young community stewards and civic leaders to become ambassadors in their community for a shared vision of a clean and beautiful Pennsylvania. Ambassadors will have the opportunity to train and network with industry leaders, state agencies, local media, and the Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful network, and they will receive a taste of life in the public service sector.

Students will be chosen through a competitive application process. Applicants should be passionate about the environment and committed to protecting Pennsylvania’s natural beauty and environmental health through volunteerism and leadership.

Chosen candidates will be asked to commit to serve as Young Ambassadors from September 2025 through May 2026 and represent

and uphold the mission and values of Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful.

Other responsibilities will include attending six mandatory virtual education sessions, conducting a community assessment and creating a summary presentation, organizing a community cleanup event through Pick Up Pennsylvania, and conducting one community education event or activity. Non-mandatory education sessions will also be offered on a variety of topics.

Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful will provide education and training to program participants on topics such as the impact of litter on roadways, litter prevention, waste management and recycling,

civic engagement and related public policy, volunteer management, and social media marketing. The program will provide networking opportunities to not only build a sense of community within the program but also to promote professional development of the individual students. In addition, Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful has partnered with industry leaders to provide job shadowing days to select Young Ambassadors.

Applications will be accepted through Tuesday, June 10. Students interested in applying may visit www.keeppabeautiful.org or contact Kylie McCutcheon at 724-836-4121, ext. 114, or kmccutcheon@ keeppabeautiful.org.

Event celebrates expansion of AgConnect

Members and advocates of Chester County’s farming community, representatives of agricultural businesses and agritourism entities, and elected officials recently joined with Pennsylvania Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding to celebrate the expansion of AgConnect. The gathering took place at Milky Way Farm in Chester Springs. AgConnect is a program that provides finance opportunities and workforce support for agricultural businesses and that promotes the benefits of farming to the region’s residents and visitors.

Chester County Government partnered with the Chester County Economic Development Council (CCEDC) last summer to restructure and expand AgConnect. Initially a CCEDC program that focused on workforce needs and finance opportunities for agriculture businesses, AgConnect now brings more resources to farmers and agricultural businesses, promotes the benefits of farming to the region’s residents and visitors, and is carrying out the Agriculture Economic Development Strategic Plan adopted by the Chester County commissioners. In addition to the celebration of AgConnect, Redding brought a special Century Farm recognition to the Matthews family of Milky Way Farm. The farm has been owned and operated by the Matthews family as a dairy farm since 1902; four generations of family members have operated the farm. Current caretakers Sam and Melba Matthews work with their children and the children’s spouses - Carolyn Matthews Eaglehouse, Thomas and Jenna Matthews, and Tim and Jane Matthews Ferris - running the permanently preserved dairy farm, which has expanded over the years to include the Chester Springs Creamery; pumpkin picking, hayride, and corn maze weekends in the fall; and a fresh produce and local honey cooperative. Milky Way was one of the first farms in the region to host school groups to educate children as they experience

a working farm, and the family also holds summer day camps.

AgConnect can be found at www.go-agconnect.org.

Information kiosks added at court buildings

Chester County Court Administration has added interactive information kiosks at the Chester County Justice Center and two magisterial district courts, providing streamlined visitor access to county court information and services.

Driven by artificial intelligence, the touchscreen and voice-activated kiosks allow users to access court forms; locate services or courtrooms within the Justice Center; and pay fines, costs, and bail with a credit card. They can also connect people via video link to the Chester County Human Needs Network (988 and 211) services, other Chester

Therefore, they must adhere to a strict glutenfree diet.

Novella, the daughter of Steve and Leslie Freeman, decided to educate people about celiac disease as part of her required Eagle Scout service project.

“I was diagnosed in December of last year,” Novella explained. “Not a lot of people know about the disease. It is a gluten intolerance that makes people sick. I am totally gluten-free. I eat (foods made with) a lot of rice flours rather than wheat products.”

offer a question-and-answer session.

The talk will be followed by the dinner, which will be served buffet style. “I am having gluten-free pasta, with cheese or meat, and I will have salads, gluten-free chocolate cherry cake and a banana cake and different samples of gluten-free products like cookies and candy,” said Novella.

County departments, and community partner organizations. The kiosks are currently available in English, with plans to add Spanish translation.

The information kiosks are available in the lobby of the Justice Center, Chester County’s Court Administration Office, the family court, and the magisterial district courts in Kennett Square and Phoenixville. Future kiosks are planned for Chester County Library and Henrietta Hankin Branch Library.

Funding for the interactive court information kiosk program was allocated through Chester County’s American Rescue Plan Act funds. Chester County Court Administration is responsible for providing administrative support to the Court of Common Pleas while facilitating the public’s access to the court and its services.

According to www.celiac .org, celiac disease is an autoimmune disease that causes the ingestion of gluten to lead to damage in the small intestine. Celiac disease can develop at any age.

People with the disease must avoid foods with wheat, rye, and barley, such as bread and processed cheese or meats. Even ingesting small amounts of gluten, like crumbs from a toaster, can cause small intestine damage.

Symptoms of the disease include abdominal pain, fatigue, headaches and migraines. “I had headaches and felt weak all the time. Now that I eat gluten-free, I feel better,” Novella shared.

The program on May 31 will begin with a talk by James Kline, a physician assistant from U.S. Digestive Health, who will provide information about celiac disease and

The food will be prepared at the church by family and fellow troop members. Novella noted that she will also be on hand at the event to greet attendees and answer questions about her experience with celiac disease.

Novella is required to document all aspects of her project, which has been approved by the Hawk Mountain Council, BSA. When completed, she will earn the Eagle Award and take part in an Eagle Court of Honor ceremony.

Eagle is the highest rank attainable in Scouts BSA. Requirements include earning at least 21 merit badges, 14 of which are mandatory for the award. The Eagle Scout must demonstrate Scout spirit, service and leadership, which includes an extensive service project that the Scout plans, organizes, leads and manages.

Robeson Lutheran Church is located at 3520 Plow Road, Mohnton. While there is no cost to attend the dinner, Novella is requesting that attendees register in advance so that enough food can be purchased. To reserve a spot, email Steve at smiltonf1218@gmail .com. The reservation deadline is Sunday, May 25. Novella is also seeking donations for the upcoming dinner. Individuals may email the previously mentioned email address for more information.

Troop 543G is open to girls in sixth grade through age 17. Troop members work on merit badges, attend summer camp and take part in community service projects.

Troop 543G is part of Scouting Unit 543, which consists of three groups: Pack 543, for boys and girls in kindergarten through grade five; Troop 543, for boys in sixth grade through age 17; and Troop 543G. To learn more, join the “Scouts 543 Plowville” Facebook group.

Tips for road trips

Options abound for summer vacations. People may take a cruise, fly to a resort, or go camping. They may also take a driving vacation - otherwise known as a road tripwhich can reduce the cost of travel and may amplify the fun. Following a few tips can make for a safe, enjoyable, and memorable trip.

If people will be relying on their personal vehicle, they should ensure that everything is in good working order before

the trip. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration offers a Recalls Look-up Tool at www.nhtsa.gov/recalls so people can check if their vehicle has any critical safety issues. It is also best to make sure that tires are in good shape and filled to the manufacturer’s recommended pressure. People should double check all fluids and get an oil change if it is close to the time the vehicle will require service.

Vacationers should

consider what their destination will be. It may be a national park, a beach, an amusement park, or a music festival, or they may even decide to go on a road trip without a predetermined destination in mind. A handful of smaller stops can make for a fun, spontaneous trip. People should choose a destination that suits their budget. When planning a trip, people may consider a travel club membership. Road trips

like AAA or AARP enable members to get discounts on various travel services, such as car rentals or hotel stays. Members may be eligible for percentages off on meals at popular restaurant chains. Membership in these programs may help to save money.

It is a good idea to plan early. Spring and summer are popular times to travel, particularly during weeks when children are off from school, and it is important to book campgrounds or other

lodging well in advance if the travel plan includes visiting popular places like national parks and other tourist-heavy areas.

People should be realistic about mileage goals. Some drivers may be on autopilot and fall into commuting habits of trying to get from one place to another in the least amount of time. Slowing down to take in the scenery can make a trip more enjoyable. AARP also advises people to be mindful of the personal needs and abilities of drivers. Sharing the load of driving can make it possible to cover more miles in less time.

Travelers are encouraged to stop at a few quirky or local attractions. Although a stop at a popular fast food chain might save time, it may not offer the same memories as visiting a local haunt or roadside attraction.

Road trips can make vacationing possible for people who find the cost of traveling by other means prohibitive, and several strategies can improve the experience.

ARL appoints chief medical officer

The Animal Rescue League of Berks County (ARL) announced the appointment of Sarah Rivera, VMD as its new chief medical officer.

Dr. Rivera earned her veterinary degree from the University of Pennsylvania and has spent the past several years at a private veterinary practice. Her professional interests have always included surgery and shelter medicine - two areas she is now excited to focus on in her new role.

Dr. Rivera’s appointment reflects ARL’s

ongoing commitment to providing high quality affordable veterinary care and advancing its mission to care for animals, support families and advocate for better lives for pets in Berks County.

Dr. Rivera joins Dr. Elisabeth Lopez and Dr. Hannah Wittorff in providing veterinary care to the more than 5,000 pets served at the shelter each year. For information about the veterinary services offered at the ARL or its mobile clinics, visit www .berksarl.org or call 610373-8830, ext. 640.
