Evolve Life Group plans expansion to Lancaster

When Joe Bachman formed Evolve Life Group in 2023, he hoped to bring together adults age 45 and older who were interested in making friends and serving their community. Now the organization, which began in the Eastern York region, is expanding to the Lancaster County side of the river.

Evolve Life Group will hold an open house/organizational meeting on Thursday, May 22, at the Marietta Community House, 264 W. Market St. It will begin at 6:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be provided.

“Evolve East York campus was introduced with eight people and now has grown to over 80 regular members,” Bachman said. “We

felt like the opportunity to have another campus just seemed natural for people in western Lancaster County to have the same opportunity as those in eastern York.”

At the open house, people will

learn more about the organization and its three core values: support ourselves, support each other and community service.

The group meets regularly for meals out at local restaurants, to serve other organizations and for

special events.

“Over the last year and a half, our group has enjoyed getting to know one another through activities such as dinners, potluck meals, ‘70s/’80s trivia, the Evolve Amazing Race and community service projects,” Bachman shared. “Our ultimate goal is just to continue connecting the community together and enjoy life together!”

Most importantly, he noted, Evolve helps people connect with others.

“This group allows people to develop relationships,” he said. “The fun thing so far is there’s a lot of people that have mentioned that they haven’t seen some people in a long time, and it gives them a way to reconnect. Many have started new relationships that never would have happened

Think of the Milanof-Schock Library, and you might think of books, of course. But the Mount Joy organization offers much more for the community, including opportunities for local students to showcase their talents.

That’s what will be happening when the library, located at 1184 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy, hosts its annual

For a fun - and deliciousopportunity to support the mission of RAISE28, head to the Cornhole Tournament & Spare Rib Cook-off. The event will be held on Saturday, May 17, at Community Bible Church (CBC), 331 Anderson Ferry Road, Marietta. The cornhole tournament will begin at 9 a.m., and the rib tasting will start at noon.

“The cornhole tournament will be held in the CBC

multipurpose room, which is where church services take place on Sunday mornings,” shared Mark Unger, executive director of RAISE28. “We are planning on having two brackets for the cornhole tournament: social and competitive.” First-, secondand third-place trophies will be awarded in each bracket.

Spare rib cooks may arrive at 7:30 a.m. to begin preparing their entries before the public gets to sample and rate the food.

Talk to focus on Anabaptist presidents

The Mount Joy Area Historical Society will host Jean-Paul Benowitz as its guest speaker at 7 p.m. on Monday, May 19, at the Cemetery Road Schoolhouse, 120 Fairview St., Mount Joy. The topic will be “U.S. Anabaptist Presidents.”

policies, including pacifism and nonresistance, to their Anabaptist upbringing. All three presidents had progressive social welfare programs and developed foreign relations strategies rooted in an understanding of global peacemaking.

Refreshments and tours of the museum will be available following the program. The meeting is free and open to the public, and donations will be accepted.

There have been 45 United States presidents serving in 47 presidencies. Benowitz will discuss the three presidents who were raised in the Anabaptist tradition: Herbert C. Hoover, who was from a Quaker background; Dwight D. Eisenhower, who was from a Mennonite and Brethren in Christ background; and Richard M. Nixon, who was from a Quaker background.

According to Benowitz, all three of these presidents, in their memoirs, attribute their domestic and foreign

The historical society’s building is open every Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. Members of the public may stop by to see the displays of Mount Joy memorabilia.

Alumni band seeks participants for parades

The Donegal Alumni Band is preparing for its parade season, during which it will take part in the Memorial Day parades in Mount Joy, Marietta, and Maytown.

The group is seeking band members to march and play, along

with band front members. People are also sought to walk with the band while smiling and waving to parade attendees. There will also be a flatbed trailer, offering participants the option to ride on it while playing an instrument or

cookers in the parking lot just outside of the main entrance to the church,” Unger said, noting that each ticket purchased includes tasting of three ribs. The rib tasting will end at 2:30 p.m. Trophies will be awarded for the first-, secondand third-place winners after votes have been counted. Winners will be announced on-site as well as on social media.

“In addition to the spare ribs, we will have the Mount Joy Rotary Fry Wagon on-site along with the cookers in the parking lot,” Unger said, adding that fries will be sold from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., or earlier if the tournament concludes before then. Beverages will also be for sale.

Unger explained that the idea for the cornhole tournament came from Jacob Dukeman.

“Jacob is a RAISE28 board member and is the chair for our fundraising committee,” he explained. “After much discussion, we decided to add the spare rib cook-off in conjunction with the

cornhole tournament.”

Unger noted that organizers hope to make the event an annual fundraiser. Money raised will support the nonprofit, located at 105 Fairview St. in Mount Joy.

“We provide after-school programs for kids from first to 12th grade,” he said. “All of our programs that we provide are free of charge.” The tournament and cook-off is the organization’s main spring fundraiser.

He hopes a crowd will come out to support RAISE28, emphasizing that people can expect friendly competition, delicious food and lots of fun.

“This is going to be a very fun event, where people can come and compete in the cornhole tournament and eat some great food while they’re at it,” he remarked. “The proceeds will all go to offset the expenses that we incur to help meet the needs of kids and families in our community.”

“We love to support our community and the children in it even more,” said Jan Betty, director of children and youth for the library. “This gives the children a way to have their creativity recognized, and the library is always excited to have some folks come into the library who may not have visited us before.”

Betty worked with Bre Martinez, the Kraybill art teacher, whom Betty describes as “marvelously creative.”

The pair have worked together for a few years now, and it’s been a great collaboration, Betty said.

“(Martinez) has selected the art being presented,” Betty shared. “She is so easy to work with, and even more importantly, she is so much fun.”

Art pieces will include clay, color theory projects, Andy

The Donegal Alumni Band is open to all who have an interest in spreading the joy and love of music to others and who want to experience the fun and camaraderie of being in a band. People do not need to be Donegal High School graduates or Donegal School District residents to participate.

Those who have not registered with the band are asked to do so, and all who plan to take part in the band during the parades are asked to sign up as well. Registration is available at www.donegalalumniband.com under the “Sign Up for DAB” tab. For more information, email info@donegalalumniband .com or call Steve Hassinger at 717-203-6463.

The idea for the event came about after a Kraybill parent attended the Donegal Art Show held annually at the library and inquired about doing a similar show featuring Kraybill students. Kraybill Mennonite School is open to students in prekindergarten through eighth grade and is located in Mount Joy, within the footprint served by the library.

“The kids have really put great effort into the art this year - as always - and the results are amazing,” Betty said. “It is so nice to support our children in their efforts. We will have a roomful of art representing the talents of many students.”

Evolve

if not for this group.”

And while it’s billed as being for people age 45 and up, that’s really an arbitrary number, he said. It’s more about the mindset.

“We’re just looking for people that are interested in a life group and are on the same or similar parts of their journey,” he explained.

Bachman has big plans for the group. He noted that many organizations such as Boy Scouts started small, but then grew into national movements. He envisions the same for Evolve.

“We feel like Evolve can travel anywhere. The purpose for the group is not just to have numbers. The purpose is that we live up to our core values,” he stated. “There are no geographic limitations to those.

We will expand to other areas as we feel like there is an interest and that we can build a foundation of members to support it.”

He also noted that while the group has three core values, it abides by one “belief value” - it’s a faith-based group with Jesus as the foundation.

“He is our trunk, so to speak,” Bachman said, referencing John 15:5. “We feel like He is our foundation, and we are the branches to reach out to ourselves knowing that we need help. We are the branches to each other to help each other through life. We are the branches to our community to those in need.”

River Discovery boat tours planned

Susquehanna National Heritage Area (SNHA) will offer one-hour River Discovery boat tours on Thursdays to Sundays from June through September. SNHA will welcome guests aboard the Chief Uncas, a historic electric-powered boat, for tours on the Lake Clarke reach of the Susquehanna River. Tours will embark from the dock at SNHA’s Zimmerman Center for Heritage, 1706 Long Level Road, Wrightsville.

On the tours, guides will share stories of the Susquehanna River’s history and heritage. Up to 22 passengers may participate in each outing. In addition, themed boat tours will be offered throughout

the tour season, highlighting stories of the river’s Civil War, Native American, and haunted heritage. There is a fee, with discounts for youths age 17 and under and for seniors. To purchase tickets, visit https://susqnha.org/programs/ boat-tours/.

The Chief Uncas was built in 1912 for Adolphus Busch, who used it for cruises at his summer estate on Otsego Lake in Cooperstown, N.Y., the headwaters of the Susquehanna River. SNHA purchased the Chief Uncas in 2021. To learn more about the history of the boat, visit https://susqnha.org/ wp-content/uploads/2024/02/ Chief-Uncas-Brochure-2-24.pdf.
