Elizabethtown Area School District will host back-to-school open house events at each of its school facilities prior to the start of the school year. The events will provide an opportunity for students to meet teachers, acclimate to the buildings, and prepare for the school year that will begin on Monday, Aug. 27. Families are encouraged to visit the school during the informal open house hours, which include Friday, Aug. 17, from 9 to 10:30 a.m. for incoming freshman and new students only at the Elizabethtown Area High School; Aug. 17 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. and Monday, Aug. 20, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at Elizabethtown Area Middle School; Thursday, Aug. 23, from 2:15 to 3:30 p.m. at Bainbridge Elementary School; Aug. 23 from 2:15 to 3:45 p.m. at East High Street Elementary School, Mill Road Elementary School, and Rheems Elementary School; and Aug. 23 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at Bear Creek School. The Elizabethtown Flower Club will meet at noon on Monday, Aug. 6, at the Gathering Place, 6 Pine St., Mount Joy. The program will be “Living a Well Life with Essential Oils,” presented by Shelly Fuge. Guests are welcome. There is a set fee for the lunch. Chapter 327 of the Korean War Veterans Association (KWVA) will meet at noon on Wednesday, Aug. 8, in the Bluebird Commons of Woodcrest Villa, 2001 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster. Membership in the KWVA is open to all men and women who served in Korea at any time from 1945 to the present or were in uniform serving anywhere during the period from June 25, 1950, to Jan. 31, 1955. GEARS Posts Rissers Mennonite’s Annual Picnic Will Feature Entertainment And Food Programs By Chelsea Peifer
Rissers Mennonite Church, 8360 Elizabethtown Road, Elizabethtown, will host its annual community picnic on Saturday, July 28. The entire event is free, and registration is not required. Festivities are slated to begin at 5 p.m. with activities for children and adults. Children’s activities will include a barrel train ride, bunnies to pet, a candy scramble, a bounce house, and an activity table with shelled corn and toy tractors and buckets to play with. A variety of lawn games, including bocce ball, laddergolf, and cornhole will be set up to
play, and a campfire will be blazing so that guests may roast marshmallows and make s’mores. Freshly spun cotton candy from a machine will also be available. A barbecue chicken dinner will begin at 6 p.m. In addition to the main course, church members will provide hot dogs and an assortment of side dishes. Attendees are welcome to bring a snack item to share if they would like, but it is not required. The main entertainment for the evening will be an outdoor movie showing of “I Can Only Imagine” at dusk. Conserving And Preserving Grant Will Support Water Quality Improvement Thanks to a grant, Lancaster Farmland Trust has incorporated water quality improvement into its farmland preservation efforts. The three-year grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation will enable the trust to focus on the combination of on-farm conservation practices with the permanent preservation of farmland. Linking these efforts is intended to ensure maximum long-term impact on water quality and allow Lancaster County to continue to be the “garden spot” of the region, said the trust’s executive director, Karen Martynick. “We believe (that) a big part of the See Farmland Preservation pg 3

An AARP Driver Safety Refresher Program will be offered on Tuesday, Aug. 21, from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Elizabethtown Area Senior Center, 70 S. Poplar St., Elizabethtown. The course is for people age 50 and up who have previously taken the eight-hour 55 Alive course. The refresher course will fulfill requirements for a continuing insurance discount from any auto insurer doing business in Pennsylvania. All participants must bring evidence of previous course completion to receive certificates. Each participant must bring a valid Pennsylvania driver’s license. See GEARS pg 2
Taste Of Mount Joy To Showcase Vehicles And Local Cuisine
Vehicles will line the streets of downtown Mount Joy for the 16th annual Taste of Mount Joy Cruisin’ Cuisine car show on July 28. Local restaurants and vendors will have an assortment of food and beverages available to purchase at the event as well. By Chelsea Peifer

The 16th annual Taste of Mount Joy Cruisin’ Cuisine car show on Saturday, July 28, will offer an assortment of vehicles, food, vendors, and music to area residents and visitors from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Main Street Mount Joy, whose
motto is “a small town with big charm,” hosts the popular event each summer. Admission is free for spectators.
