Preserving a Soldier’s Story

During her senior year at Donegal High School in 2012-13, Sarah Brallier learned the story of Harold Billow’s experience in World War II. She and her classmate Laura Hess created a documentary based on the Mount Joy resident’s memo ries of the Malmedy Massacre, a key moment in the Battle of the Bulge when 87 people were executed in a snowy field, gunned down by German soldiers.

On Jan. 13, members of the Rotary Club of Mount Joy were treated to a showing of the documentary, as well as remarks from

Brallier and Liz Lewis, the teacher who mentored the students as they created the project for National History Day.

It’s the perfect time to share Billow’s story, as the Rotary Club is working to raise funds for a memorial to commemorate the 10 Lancaster County residents who were part of the massacre. Five were killed that day in December 1944, and five survived, coming home to, in Billow’s case, ensure no one ever forgot the traumatic day.

Parenting Kids in Uncertain Times

“There is the African proverb ‘It takes a village to raise a child,’” said pastor Adam Swarr, director of family ministries at Mount Joy Church of God. “We want to give parents and other influences around children the tools to be a key part of a child’s village.”

With that in mind, the church will host “On-Purpose Parenting in Uncertain Times,” a talk with Walt Mueller, founder and president of the Center for Parent/Youth Understanding (CPYU). The event will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Feb. 21, at the church, 30 E. Main St., Mount Joy. CPYU is a nonprofit organization serving schools, churches and community organizations across the United States and throughout the world in their efforts to strengthen families by helping those who know and love children and teens to understand today’s ever-changing youth culture.

If the word “exercise” makes you think, “That’s not for me anymore,” Juniper Village at Mount Joy wants you to think again. Its new SilverSneakers fitness program is designed specifically for older adults, with gentle movements and certified instructors who understand aging bodies. The program is focused on what is possible, rather than what is not.

SilverSneakers is a nationwide fitness program, supported by

Mueller’s background includes more than 40 years of experience working with young people and families, and he has appeared on numerous media outlets internationally to discuss teenagers and their world.

Mueller writes on youth culture and family issues and is the author of 10 books, including his newest book, “A Student’s Guide to Navigating Culture.” He also regularly contributes to magazines and journals; writes a blog; and provides commentary and analysis on youth culture through CPYU’s daily radio program, “Youth Culture Today.”

That program is available on 700 radio stations across North America. Additionally, Mueller is the host of the “Youth Culture Matters” podcast.

Mueller resides in Elizabethtown, where CPYU is based, and tells audiences that his greatest joys in life have come as a father of four now-grown children and a

grandfather of seven.

When he shares his thoughts on parenting, Mueller emphasizes that he is not an expert. Instead, he views himself as a fellow struggler with other parents and grandparents who seek to understand the world of youths in order to provide solid guidance and direction.

Swarr noted that Mount Joy Church of God traditionally holds a community event in February.

sider coming to Mueller’s program.

“Too many parents feel overwhelmed and underequipped,” he said. “We hope to equip them to raise better kids.”

The talk is free, but preregistration is requested, although it is not required. Free child care for children up through high school will be provided. When people register, they will be asked if their

children will be in the Nursery program (newborn to 3 years old), Children’s Ministry program (age 4 through sixth grade) or Youth Group program (middle-schoolers and high-schoolers). Each age group will have its own activities and leaders.

To learn more about the event or to register, visit www.mount joychurchofgod.org.

“The last several years, it’s been focused on marriages,” he said. “This year, we wanted to focus on a variety of issues that impact our community. The first topic we wanted to hit is parenting. But it’s not just for parents. (It’s for) anyone who is regularly around kids, including grandparents, aunts and uncles, teachers, child care workers, future parents, etc.”

Swarr said he feels a personal connection to Mueller’s program.

“The more my kids got older, the more I realized I didn’t know what I was doing as a parent,” he said. “I want to give help and resources to the next generation of parents that I didn’t have. The world of parenting has changed so much in just the last few years with cellphones, social media, rapidly increasing anxiety, etc., so our church wants to be an asset in helping parents and others around children to better understand how to handle all these modern influences on their kids.”

Beyond the February program, Mount Joy Church of God has other events planned throughout the year to provide resources to serve the community, including an end-of-life planning program in April and a Medicare education event in the fall.

Swarr hopes anyone who interacts with young people will con -

Each year on the date of the Malmedy Massacre - Dec. 17 - as well as on Memorial Day and Veter-

Day, Billow placed 87 flags in the front yard of his Mount Joy home, creating a memorial to the people who died during the massacre in Belgium.

“I grew up in Mount Joy, and I had passed Harold’s house and seen the flags in his yard for many years, but I never knew what it was about,” Brallier recalled.

When Lewis, then a history teacher at Donegal, introduced students to ideas for National History Day projects, Billow’s story stood out to Brallier and Hess.

“The first time I met Harold, it was so inspiring hearing his stories,” Brallier said. “He was such a happy, positive person. He always had a smile on his face, and he gave the best hugs.”

Over the course of Brallier’s senior year and Hess’ sophomore year, the girls met regularly with Billow, who shared memories and photographs from his experience in World War II.

“We became friends,” Brallier said, noting that Billow would regularly visit her at her job as a local restaurant server long after

the documentary project was completed. “He was my hero personally. It was an honor to tell his story and a wonderful experience getting to know him.”

Brallier and Hess named their documentary “Beneath the Snow of the Baugnez Crossroads: Uncovering the Malmedy Massacre.” To compete in the history contest, they had to ensure the final product was less than 10 minutes long, a challenge they struggled with.

“We had so much to include, and we really worked to cut it down,” Brallier said. “The final project is 9:58.”

Brallier narrates the documentary, which features interviews with Billow and information gleaned from hours of research.

“They had to use primary and secondary sources, and they had to complete an annotated bibliography, which was verified by the judges,” Lewis said, noting that the girls used both the National Archives and the German National Archives for research. They also relied on a German teacher at the high school to translate documents and provide correct pronunciation for the names of people featured in the documentary.

National History Day, now in its 52nd year, is a nonprofit program that seeks to improve the teaching and learning of history.

“Its main event is an annual competition in which students develop projects related to a yearly theme,” Lewis explained.

For Brallier and Hess, the theme was “Turning Points in History.”

The girls competed locally at Penn Manor High School, where they won first place in the senior group documentary category. From there, they edited the film and rerecorded it to prepare for the state competition, where, in May of 2013, they placed in the top six in their category of all entries in the state.

Billow often made presentations to Donegal students about his experience, and shortly before his death in 2022, he delivered an envelope of photos of himself with National History Day researchers, asking that the photos be given to the students.

“He treasured their visits and their presence in his life,” Lewis said. “He wanted each of those who had listened to his story and taken a photo with him to know how much their time meant to him.”

Brallier told the group at the Rotary Club meeting that she hopes to continue researching Malmedy,

including learning more about the other local soldiers who were there.

She hopes people who watch the documentary will realize just how young the men at Malmedy were and how what they went through is unfathomable for most people.

“I want people to appreciate their sacrifice,” she said. “You study history so you don’t repeat it, and you want to learn from the past. I think people need to appreciate that we wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for people like Harold.”

To watch “Beneath the Snow of the Baugnez Crossroads: Uncovering the Malmedy Massacre,” visit https://tinyurl.com/3b2jp84z.

The Rotary Club of Mount Joy estimates the total cost of the memorial at $35,000 to $40,000, and community support is necessary for the group to meet its goal of completion for dedication of the site on Memorial Day of this year. research from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institutes of Health. The Juniper Village initiative is free for residents of the retirement community as well as any community members with eligible Medicare Advantage plans.

“The idea to bring SilverSneakers to Juniper Village at Mount Joy grew out of our commitment to offering fitness that is both meaningful and motivating for residents,” shared Rikki Goldenberg, national director of Catalyst for Juniper Communities. “We were looking to expand the variety of our group classes while also introducing a program with a strong reputation for results. SilverSneakers is widely known and trusted by older adults, so it felt like a natural fit for our community.”

She noted that as the organization began conversations with the SilverSneakers team, it became apparent that the fitness program would provide an opportunity to deepen, not outsource, Juniper’s wellness culture.

“Rather than simply hosting outside instructors, SilverSneakers offered to train and certify our own team members,” Goldenberg said. “That aligned perfectly with the Juniper approach. Our Juniper associates know our residents, their goals and their abilities; having them lead SilverSneakers classes allows us to deliver a nationally recognized program in a way that is personal, consistent and tailored to each individual.”

She emphasizes that Juniper Village also understands that fitness is not one-size-fits-all.

“Whether someone is wanting to build strength, improve flexibility or simply dance at a granddaughter’s wedding,

we believe movement should support real-life goals and be offered at the right pace for each person,” she said.

SilverSneakers classes focus on improving strength, balance, flexibility and overall physical well-being, while also encouraging social connection and engagement. Gentle, chair-supported exercises enhance mobility and increase range of motion in all major joints, Goldenberg said.

“Exercise selection mimics activities of daily living, supporting participants in maintaining independence and quality of life,” she explained. “Cognitive health exercises and social interactions keep minds sharp while fostering meaningful connections.”

Research from the program shows that participants experience improved physical and emotional health, reduced social isolation and greater confidence in performing daily activities. Many participants report they would exercise less, or not at all, without the program.

“Give it a try!” Goldenberg said. “SilverSneakers classes are designed specifically for older adults, with movements that can be done standing or seated and at your own pace. It is about feeling better, meeting people and having fun. You might be surprised how great you feel afterward.”

A mobility class is offered Mondays and Thursdays from 11 to 11:30 a.m. at Juniper Village at Mount Joy, 607 Hearthstone Lane. In the coming months, additional SilverSneakers classes will be added to the lineup.

Juniper Village residents can sign up in the community.

Nonresidents can check their eligibility, access the class schedule and sign up for classes at www .silversneakers.com.
