Chocolate Walk Will Sweeten 2nd Friday

You’re invited to fall in love with Elizabethtown at the annual Mars Wrigley Chocolate Walk. The event, organized by LIV-ETown, will take place on Friday, Feb. 13, from 4 to 8 p.m. throughout downtown Elizabethtown as part of 2nd Friday festivities.

“The third annual Mars Wrigley Chocolate Walk brings together families and local businesses for an evening of love, laughter and celebration,” shared Clint Gibble, president of LIV-ETown.

The walk will begin at The Elizabeth, 18 N. Market St., Elizabethtown, where people may purchase chocolate boxes or pick up preordered boxes. Attendees will then stroll through Elizabethtown, collecting various chocolates and candies from participating businesses.

“As part of the festive 2nd Friday

For the past three years, Cornerstone Youth Center has been raising money during its annual banquet by auctioning off student-produced artwork. Last year, the organization began offering supporters an opportunity to preview the artwork a few weeks prior to the banquet. This year’s preview show will be held on Friday, Feb. 13, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at

Cornerstone, 95 S. Wilson Ave., Elizabethtown.

Artwork from the show will be auctioned off at the nonprofit’s banquet, to be held from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 26, at The Star Barn at Stone Gables Estate, 1 Hollinger Lane, Elizabethtown.

As Cornerstone executive director Jim Bush explained, the February event is called the Heart & Art Gala, and the name originally came

Parenting Kids in Uncertain Times

“There is the African proverb ‘It takes a village to raise a child,’” said pastor Adam Swarr, director of family ministries at Mount Joy Church of God. “We want to give parents and other influences around children the tools to be a key part of a child’s village.” With that in mind, the church will host “On-Purpose Parenting in Uncertain Times,” a talk with Walt Mueller, founder and president of the Center for Parent/Youth Understanding (CPYU). The event will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Feb. 21, at the church, 30 E. Main St., Mount Joy. CPYU is a nonprofit organization serving schools, churches and community organizations across the United States and throughout the world in their efforts to strengthen families by helping those who know and love children and teens to understand today’s ever-changing youth culture.

Mueller’s background includes more than 40 years of experience working with young people and families, and he has appeared on numerous media outlets internationally to discuss teenagers and their world.

Mueller writes on youth culture and family issues and is the author of 10 books, including his newest book, “A Student’s Guide to Navigating Culture.” He also regularly contributes to magazines and journals; writes a blog; and provides commentary and analysis on youth culture through CPYU’s daily radio program, “Youth Culture Today.”

The Mars Wrigley Chocolate Walk will feature chocolate, candy and community, with opportunities for photos in front of a festive backdrop.
Seth Joyner will be the keynote speaker at Cornerstone Youth Center’s banquet.

Parenting from

That program is available on 700 radio stations across North America. Additionally, Mueller is the host of the “Youth Culture Matters” podcast.

Mueller resides in Elizabethtown, where CPYU is based, and tells audiences that his greatest joys in life have come as a father of four now-grown children and a grandfather of seven.

When he shares his thoughts on parenting, Mueller emphasizes that he is not an expert. Instead, he views himself as a fellow struggler with other parents and grandparents who seek to understand the world of youths in order to provide solid guidance and direction.

Swarr noted that Mount Joy Church of God traditionally holds a community event in February.

“The last several years, it’s been focused on marriages,” he said. “This year, we wanted to focus on a variety

of issues that impact our community. The first topic we wanted to hit is parenting. But it’s not just for parents. (It’s for) anyone who is regularly around kids, including grandparents, aunts and uncles, teachers, child care workers, future parents, etc.”

Swarr said he feels a personal connection to Mueller’s program.

“The more my kids got older, the more I realized I didn’t know what I was doing as a parent,” he said. “I want to give help and resources to the next generation of parents that I didn’t have. The world of parenting has changed so much in just the last few years with cellphones, social media, rapidly increasing anxiety, etc., so our church wants to be an asset in helping parents and others around children to better understand how to handle all these modern influences on their kids.”

Beyond the February program, Mount Joy Church of God has other events planned throughout the year to provide resources to serve the community, including an end-of-life planning program in April and a Medicare education event in the fall.

Swarr hopes anyone who interacts with young people will consider coming to Mueller’s program.

from the event’s proximity to Valentine’s Day.

“Not only does it reflect the love the students put into the artwork they create, but it also reminds them of the great love Jesus has for them,” Bush said.

Acrylics, watercolor, modern art on vinyl and sketch art pieces will be on display at the gala.

“The community will get to view the art pieces made by our students while they enjoy coffee, drinks and desserts. There will be several categories of art, and winners will be chosen in each category,” Bush explained. “The winning pieces will be auctioned off during the banquet. Guests will have the opportunity to meet and speak with our student artists, hear about the inspiration behind their artwork and tour Cornerstone.”

People will then be invited to attend the banquet to bid on the artwork, learn more about Cornerstone’s mission and share fellowship with others. The banquet will feature a silent auction, along with the live auction of the artwork; a catered dinner by SpikeFish Catering; a video presentation by Illuminate Media, highlighting a success story of a Cornerstone alumnus; and the presentation of the Jerry Engle Volunteer Award and Laurie Shepler Award.

“The menu is braised brisket in demi-glace, port wine chicken, almond and cranberry roasted green beans, Yukon gold mashed potatoes, desserts and drinks,” Bush said. “Hors d’oeuvres will be available during the silent auction.”

The banquet’s keynote message will be presented by Philadelphia Eagles Hall of Famer Seth Joyner.

Joyner was selected by the Philadelphia Eagles in the eighth round of the 1986 NFL Draft and went on to build an accomplished 13-year NFL career. He played for the Eagles from 1986 to 1993, followed by stints with the Arizona Cardinals, Green Bay Packers and Denver Broncos. Known for his rare blend of strength and speed, Joyner earned three Pro Bowl selections in 1991, 1993 and 1994. He was named Sports Illustrated’s NFL Player of the Year in 1991 and finished runner-up for Associated Press Defensive Player of the Year. Joyner appeared in two Super Bowls, winning Super Bowl XXXIII with Denver in 1998. He was inducted

into the Philadelphia Eagles Hall of Fame in 2018 and remains active as a television and radio football analyst.

“At the banquet, he will be sharing about how his faith played a pivotal role in his life and his career and will highlight the importance of having a youth center like Cornerstone for young people to connect with caring mentors and deepen their faith in Jesus,” Bush said.

Cornerstone Youth Center provides after-school programs for middle and high school students. Students have access to games and activities; use of a skatepark, indoor basketball court and rock-climbing wall; homework and tutoring help; daily meals; and leadership and development opportunities.

“By attending our banquet, you will have the opportunity to support our mission to provide a safe and fun environment where youth can build healthy relationships, be introduced to the Gospel and experience wholeness in life through Christ,” Bush said. “You will enjoy a fantastic meal, hear encouraging stories of life transformation and possibly come away with some great items from our silent and live auctions!”

Proceeds from the banquet will help support the nonprofit.

“This year, we are kicking off a ‘Burn the Mortgage’ campaign,” Bush shared. “In order to continue to provide all the programs and activ-

ities that Cornerstone offers and to grow the ministry, we are looking to pay off the mortgage in order to free up much needed resources.”

He explained that Cornerstone is currently facing a staffing shortage, and with only a small number of paid staff, the organization relies on volunteers to help oversee its programs.

More volunteers are needed, he said, noting that a typical day sees upwards of 35 students with two or three paid staff and two or three volunteers. Help is especially needed on Mondays and Fridays

from 3 to 6 p.m.

“Without volunteers, we will need to hire some additional parttime staff to effectively manage the number of students and continue to provide the level of excellence that has become a hallmark of Cornerstone,” Bush remarked.

Doors to the banquet will open at 5 p.m., with the silent auction beginning at 5:30 p.m. The program and dinner will start at 6:30 p.m. To learn more about volunteering with Cornerstone or to register for the banquet, visit https://cornerstone etown.org.

activities, local eateries will be offering chocolate-themed menu specials and downtown shops will have Valentine’s Day sales and surprise activities,” said Tony Gibble of LIV-ETown. “Valentine-themed photo backdrops with fun and engaging props will also be available at The Elizabeth.”

Clint noted that the event provides a chance for the community to come together to support local businesses in a fun and tasty way.

“We are immensely grateful to Mars Wrigley for sponsoring this much-anticipated annual event,” he said.

Additional 2nd Friday activities that will take place during the walk include a conversation heart scavenger hunt and the My Town, E-town Sticker Book Sticker Quest.

“In the conversation heart scavenger hunt, hunters search for a conversation heart hidden in participating businesses,” Tony said, noting that the scavenger hunt is free and that hunt sheets may be picked up with the chocolate boxes at The Elizabeth. “Each person completing

the scavenger hunt receives a candy prize and is entered in a drawing to receive $150 of gift cards to downtown businesses.”

For the Sticker Quest, participants will collect unique and themed stickers from local businesses to place in their My Town, E-town Sticker Book. The sticker books, which feature a cover created by local artist Julie Drake, are available for purchase for a small fee and contain blank pages to collect 2nd Friday stickers all year long.

LIV-ETown formed in 2021 with a goal of enhancing the vitality of the downtown Elizabethtown area by organizing events and activities that combine quality, outreach and fun. With a commitment to local participation and community engagement, LIV-ETown continues to hold unique events throughout the year, including the annual Strawberry Social, Candy Crawl and Trunk or Treat and the themed monthly 2nd Friday events, as well as the Very Grinchy Christmas Tree Lighting presented as a partnership with the Elizabethtown Area

Chamber of Commerce and Discover Elizabethtown.

“All of our events are designed to foster lasting connections within the community,” said Cindy Telenko, vice president of LIV-ETown. “These efforts demonstrate LIV-ETown’s ongoing dedication to making downtown Elizabethtown a vibrant and welcoming place for all. … The Chocolate Walk is a wonderful way for families, friends and neighbors to explore our downtown while making sweet memories along the way.”

Tickets for chocolate boxes may be purchased in advance at The Candy Unicornium, 2 W. High St., Elizabethtown. A limited number of boxes will be available, so people are encouraged to get tickets early.
