Grace Baptist Church of Millersville is settling into its new home and preparing to explore new possibilities.

On Dec. 10, 2025, the church closed on the building and property at 242 Bender Road, Millersville, and held its first service there four days later. “That was a very busy week,” pastor Joel DeVinney said. “We closed on Wednesday and moved Thursday, Friday, Saturday and had a service Sunday.”
Grace Baptist sold its property at 121 Walnut Hill Road, Millersville, to Aaron’s Acres. “Aaron’s Acres is a public organization that serves children and young adults with various disabilities,” DeVinney said. “I think they had been looking for a property for a couple of years, and (the Bender Road) property has been for sale for a couple of years, too. When we looked at it and decided it would be great for

us and listed our building, Aaron’s Acres was interested in purchasing our property. So we got a new home, and they got a home.” He noted that church members
are thrilled. “The church was very enthusiastic about the move,” DeVinney said. “We were at Walnut Hill Road for all 51 years of our existence. The past several years,

On a stretch of preserved farmland in Elizabethtown, transformation happens every day at a space that offers reconnection - with the land, with one another and with the essential act of growing food.
This is Wittel Farm, a nonprofit on 85 acres of land with a long history of care,
now being reimagined as a place where food, community and environmental stewardship meet.
Records date the property to the mid-1700s, and long before that it was cared for by the Susquehannock people. In the 1980s, Chuck and Katie Wittel placed the property into a land trust, gifting it to the Lutheran Camping Corporation.

It was another outstanding year for the Lancaster County Career & Technology Foundation (LCCTF).
Students and the businesses that hire them stand to benefit.
The LCCTF recently announced the awarding of a total of $142,727 in Dr. Michael K. Curley Teacher Innovation Grants that will have a profound effect on Lancaster County Career & Technology Center (LCCTC) students.
“I think we are very fortunate to be able to make the impact we do to really enhance the training and the opportunities here for our students,” said LCCTF executive director Jennifer Baker. “We want to make sure that they are at their best when they enter the workforce, and this equipment goes to that.”

Justin Findley of the heavy equipment operations and basic maintenance program at the Brownstown campus was awarded a $19,997 grant for the purchase of TOPCON GPS. That will enable students to complete projects as they would at a work site.
Brian Myers of the electrical construction technology program at the Brownstown campus was awarded a $12,000 grant to put a customized photovoltaic training system in the courtyard.
Tim Rosenberg of the computer networking and security program at the Brownstown campus was awarded a $23,322 grant for a project called Cyber City 2.0.

While not much was produced at the farm for many years, that changed in 2016, when the farm’s current manager, the Rev. Matt Lenahan, began the Growing Project, a partnership between the Lutheran Camping Corp., the Lower Susquehanna Synod and Hunger-Free Lancaster County.
Lenahan, pastor of Zion Lutheran Church in Akron, grew up on a large commercial farm in New York and once thought he would never farm again after entering ministry.
His thinking shifted as he became more aware of food insecurity and the fragility of modern food systems.

“I really started to think about the food system and how food-dependent we are because so few of us are actu-
ally participating in the food production,” he said. “We’ve really stepped away as a culture from agriculture as a principal way people live, and I think that’s problematic.”
Knowing that access to fresh, locally grown food was a challenge in the county, Lenahan asked a question: “What if we grow food together and give it away?”
From that idea, a community-based effort to produce food for Lancaster County’s charitable food system began to grow. Wittel Farm partners with the Lancaster County Food Hub, the Elizabethtown Community Cupboard, Power Packs, Water Street Mission and other organizations to distribute its harvest. This summer, the farm will partner with Columbia Dream Center for the first time, providing

produce for its summer food program.
In its first year, the farm produced a few thousand pounds of food. Now, it is in its 10th growing season, farming about nine acres intensively and growing more than 20 varieties of fruits and vegetables, including plums, berries, pawpaws, greens, cucumbers, pumpkins, beans, peppers and potatoes.
Along the way, Lenahan embraced regenerative agriculture, a chemical-free approach that focuses on soil health, biodiversity and ecological balance. Cover crops, composting and minimal soil disturbance replace synthetic fertilizers and pesticides.
“We work year-round at this site,” Lenahan said. “And we are constantly learning.”
That learning happens not only for Lenahan, but for the hundreds of volunteers who come to the farm each year. Between 300 and 500 people help plant, weed and harvest throughout the growing season.
Alex Chism, a Millersville University senior studying education and plant science, joined the farm as an intern in 2024 and quickly became an essential part of its work.

is amazing.”
This past year, Chism expanded the farm’s crop diversity by adding flowers alongside food. The flowers have increased pollinators such as bees and butterflies, boosting fruit and vegetable production.
Ceinwyn Erb, an Elizabethtown College junior studying environmental science, began volunteering at Wittel Farm in September.
“It’s been wonderful to have every week a set time to be outside, be in nature, working with my hands, doing something that is positively impacting the local community and the local environment,” Erb said.
Lenahan describes Wittel Farm as “community-sustained agriculture,” a model that invites people into the work of food production rather than simply consuming its results.
“I really enjoy the physical nature of the work,” Chism said. “It’s very methodical. There are so many things grabbing for our attention, and to be able to just focus on one thing that is very fruitful

“We like to talk about food sovereignty, acknowledging that every one of us eats, so we all have a stake in food production,” he said. “It’s about really helping people to reclaim an intrinsic human connection to the natural world and to growing food.” He is careful to note that Wittel Farm is not about “agritainment.”
“I really want this to be a place where the community can get involved and have a real experience,” he said. “I think there is actually joy in doing this work together. … I really love bringing people together on the farm who have no experience with farming at all, no experience with food production, and they get to have an experience here, whether planting something, tending or harvesting. It’s transformational for people.”
This year, the farm plans to add chickens, expand partnerships and hire more staff, including a farm educator role Chism will fill after graduation.
Though the land is held by the Lutheran Camping Corp. and protected by Lancaster Farmland Trust, Lenahan sees Wittel Farm as belonging to the whole community.
“This is a place for everyone,” he said. “Young children, seniors, people with no experience at all. Everyone has something to contribute.”

we have talked about our need for more space, and every time a plan came forward, it was very expensive. We had a plan to expand the auditorium, but it would have cost $7 (million) to $8 million. And it was dependent on us getting water and sewer, public water and sewer, which we did not have on Walnut Hill Road. … When this property came available and it was cheaper than our expansion plans and available immediately, the congregation was very excited about the possibility.”
Grace Baptist is finding that bigger is better in this case. “(The new building is) twice the square footage of our former building,” said DeVinney. “Its (increased) size was primarily our concern. It’s not just the size of the building, but it sits on 20 acres of land, and it is right next door to a new development where they are going to start building homes. There’ll be 200 or so new houses right next door in the next several years.”
Grace Baptist can now accommodate more congregants. “The auditorium (where services are held) seats almost twice as many people exactly,” said DeVinney. We have 330 chairs in there right now. Our previous one had 170 seats. (The new location) has twice the number of classrooms, and
they’re larger.” The pastor said 300 people attended the Christmas Eve service.
Grace Baptist holds a service Sundays at 10 a.m., following Sunday school which starts at 9 a.m. “We moved from two services to one, and that’s been great,” DeVinney said. “We all worship together, which is something that’s important to us. We have enjoyed that very much.”
Grace Baptist will install a sizable playground, and the church is considering more ways to make use of the additional land.
In addition to Sunday school and services, Grace Baptist participates in the Bible2School program. “We host students from LeTort Elementary,” said DeVinney. “We’re much closer (now), so it makes that transportation a lot easier.”
Awana, a program for children ages 3 through eighth grade, takes place Wednesdays starting at 6:30 p.m.
“Since we just moved in, we’re thinking about how else we might use the building in our location to serve the community,” said DeVinney. “We look forward to getting to know our neighbors better and being a positive member of the community, and we look forward to welcoming the new people who will move in at the development there.”

First Reformed Church, 40 E. Orange St., Lancaster, will present a concert, “Organic Reflections: Celebrating Black Composers,” on First Friday, Feb. 6, at 8 p.m. Doors will open at 7:30 p.m. The 30-minute program will feature organist Larry Hershey. The concert will include Adolphus Hailstork’s “Toccata on ‘Great Day’” and Carl Haywood’s “Improvisation on ‘We Shall Overcome,’” as well as works by several other distinguished composers. The program will also feature the Rev. Dominique Denman singing the African American spiritual “Give Me Jesus.”

at the Mount Joy campus was awarded a $20,000 grant to create a lab
Brian Singer of the automotive technology AST program at the Willow Street campus was awarded a $15,000 grant to buy a CAN Bus Management System that will allow students to learn how to diagnose and repair a CAN Bus system.
Donna Maslin of the dental hygiene program at the Willow Street location was awarded a $12,655 grant to be used for funding to teach students Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT).

Jessica Weinholt of the medical assistant program at the Willow Street campus was awarded a $15,000 grant for Integrated Diagnostic Wall Systems, which will provide students with hands-on experience with equipment that is found in medical facilities.
Lindsay Feerrar of the veterinary assistant program at the Willow Street campus was awarded a $24,752 grant for a laboratory equipment update.
The LCCTF issued grants worth a total of $74,511 last year, $176,746 in 2023-24, and $98,969 in 2022-23.
“It all depends on the funding that we receive and the requests that we get from the instructors,

which is why it varies every year, but we’ve had some excellent years being able to support a number of programs,” Baker said.
The LCCTF raises funds in a variety of ways. Each May, the organization holds its Fly on the Run event. The first day features a banquet at the Mount Joy campus, with food that’s prepared
and served by students and a live auction featuring items made by students. A fly-fishing tournament is held the following day. This year’s Fly on the Run event will be held on Wednesday, May 6, and Thursday, May 7.
Money is also generated from the state’s Educational Improvement Tax Credit
Program. “The majority of the dollars come from those two initiatives,” Baker said.
A group of people decides how to dole out the money. “It’s a several-step process,” Baker said. “(Instructors) apply in September. We have the principals and the CTC administration take a look at those. We then review it with our finance and allocation committee. And that goes to our executive committee, then to our board for final approval.”

The foundation board is the one that makes the final approval in November. “It’s very collaborative with not just our board, but also the schools, admin, staff, and faculty,” said Baker.
Another collection of people weighs in. “We also rely on input from each program, which has an occupational advisory committee (OAC),” said Baker. “Each program has eight to 15 industry representatives that meet twice a year, and they help guide curriculum, help recommend any equipment that the program may need so that we are training students on what they’re going to be using currently in the industry. All the equipment that we approve first is approved by the OAC.”

Three Introduction to Birding workshops will be offered on Saturday, March 28, each designed for a specific age group.
A 10 a.m. session will be geared toward families. An 11 a.m. session will address adults, and a 12:30 p.m. session will introduce teenagers to birding. While each session is tailored for its specific audience, all share the same goal: helping participants connect with their feathered neighbors and the river landscape they call home.
Sarah Gotwols, a Lancaster County native who has spent countless hours on land and water observing birds and other wildlife in the region, will lead the program.
“We’ve worked with Sarah before on birding walks and lectures, but this is the first time we’ve offered this workshop series,” said Sonya Vayansky, program manager
for SNHA. “Sarah has a real talent for welcoming beginners into birding, and we’re always looking for engaging ways to help people explore and enjoy the parks, trails and outdoor spaces within the Susquehanna National Heritage Area. This felt like a natural fit.”
Participants can expect a friendly, low-pressure introduction to birding at the workshops, Vayansky said.
“They’ll learn practical skills, like how to use binoculars, field guides and bird-identification apps, along with tips for spotting and identifying birds in the field,” she remarked. “It’s also a great chance to meet others who share an interest in nature and to learn from an experienced birder who knows our region well.”
The workshop for families will introduce the basics of birdwatching in a hands-on, kid-friendly way, designed to keep young birders curious and engaged outdoors. The adult session will cover core birding skills, as participants are introduced to bird identification basics, while the program for teens will encourage youths to pursue a new outdoor hobby as they

simple. “Everything we do is to supplement what the school’s already doing, and it’s to enhance their curriculum, training experience, and their education,” Baker said. “Just last year alone, we probably gave over $400,000 in equipment, scholarships, and financial assistance to students. We help provide students that are in need of (school) uniforms. We have tuition assistance programs for adult students. Our impact is pretty significant across all of the programs here and all of the campuses.”
She provided an example of the organization’s effectiveness. “We had a student that said, ‘I was working at this welding shop, and we were using this laser welder that was purchased with one of our grants, and they were

so impressed that I knew how to use that,’” Baker said. “We’re hoping that we’re giving our students a leg up when it comes to entering the workforce and finding those careers that will be life-changing for them.”

learn beginning identification skills and how to record their sightings.
Gotwols leads birdwatching walks throughout the year with the Lancaster Conservancy and the Lancaster County Bird Club. She has also been a presenter with SNHA aboard the historic tour boat Chief Uncas and at the Zimmerman Center for Heritage.
Holding a program like the birding workshop is important to SNHA, Vayansky said.
“Connecting people to the natural and cultural resources of York and Lancaster counties is central to our mission,”
she said. “When people spend time outdoors and build a personal connection to these places, they’re more likely to care about protecting them. Workshops like this give people the confidence and tools to experience our parks and trails in a new way - and to see them as places worth preserving.”

There is a per-person charge for the workshops. Children and teens under age 18 must be accompanied by a parent or
guardian. Adults accompanying teens to the teen workshop do not need to register or pay for a ticket. Participants are asked to bring their own binocu -
lars, if possible, although some will be available to borrow during the program. To register for a workshop, visit https:// susqnha.org/events.

A new children’s shop, Bicycle Pie, officially opened at 17 W. Main St., Strasburg. The new shop offers toys, books, clothing, and gifts for children from newborns through age 10.
The shop is owned by Kathryn Peck, a mother of four and longtime small-business owner.
Bicycle Pie is Peck’s second children’s boutique. Her first shop, Mockingbird, was based in Boston, where she built a community of families before selling the store to a customer when she and her husband decided to move back to Lancaster County, where they both grew up.
Bicycle Pie, located in a former antique shop, features exposed brick walls, aged wood floors and original details that aim to give the store a warm, welcoming feeling.
Peck hopes Bicycle Pie will grow into more than

just a place to shop. Plans include children’s story times, in-store events and seasonal gatherings designed to bring local families together and make the shop a familiar stop in town.
