Kathryn Davis is a staunch believer in serving her community and country.
The 2024 LampeterStrasburg (L-S) High School graduate was crowned Miss Lancaster County last fall, earning the right to compete in the Miss Pennsylvania pageant in mid-June at the Appell Center for the Performing Arts in York.
“I’m super excited to represent my hometown,” said Davis.
The victor of the Miss Pennsylvania contest will advance to the Miss America pageant. “It’s something I’ve dreamt about since I was a little girl,” said Davis. “Right now, my focus is on Miss Pennsylvania. Whatever God has in store will happen.”

She was enthroned as Miss Lancaster County Sept. 24 at Ephrata High School. “It was so unexpected,” Davis said.
The competition was composed of a 10-minute interview, which was 30% of the total score; an onstage question about the contestants’ community service initiative (10%); talent demonstration (20%); a fitness competition in athleticwear (20%); and an evening gown walk (20%).
Three titles - Miss Southern Lancaster County, Miss Heart of Lancaster, and Miss Red Rose City - were announced prior to Miss Lancaster County. Davis thought she had a better chance to win one of those crowns, but she tried to remain optimistic before the announcement of the big prize. “I was definitely

Sports can play a key role in a young person’s development.
A nontraditional sport, archery is given an avenue through the Junior Olympic Archery Development (JOAD) program, which provides participation and competition opportunities for students. Perhaps the most important thing that JOAD does is bring out the best in kids.
“I want (students) to learn about archery, their archery,” said Bryan Baker, an assistant manager at the Lancaster Archery Academy. “Their archery is different than other people’s, just the mechanics of it. But beyond that, I want them to learn who they are. I want them to figure out what their identity is, especially if they’re doing this at a very high level. I don’t want their identity to be defined by their success. That’s a very dangerous place for an athlete to be.”

The need is immense; therefore, the goal is ambitious.
You can help fulfill the lofty objective.

The 11th Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) MobilePack will be held Friday, March 20, through Sunday, March 22, at Willow Street Mennonite Church, 399 E. Penn Grant Road, Willow Street.
Packing shifts will be held Friday, March 20 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., and 4 to 6 p.m., Saturday, March 21, from 9 to 11 a.m., noon to 2 p.m., 2:30 to 4:30 p.m., and 5 to 7 p.m. and Sunday, March 22, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., and 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.
“Some shift times are more popular than others and fill quickly,” said Lora Mangus Wenger, who is the FMSC Lancaster County
Located at 2195-A Old Philadelphia Pike, Lancaster, Lancaster Archery Academy both hosts and sponsors the JOAD program, an initiative created by the national governing body USA Archery. The program is designed to teach young people the sport, get them involved with it and develop national and world-level competitors, depending upon each individual’s level of interest.
There are fees associated with participation in the JOAD program.
“It depends on the archer, and it depends on their goals,” said Baker. “For some, it’s a reason to

A new children’s shop, Bicycle Pie, officially opened at 17 W. Main St., Strasburg. The new shop offers toys, books, clothing, and gifts for children from newborns through age 10.
The shop is owned by Kathryn Peck, a mother of four and longtime small-business owner.
Bicycle Pie is Peck’s second

children’s boutique. Her first shop, Mockingbird, was based in Boston, where she built a community of families before selling the store to a customer when she and her husband decided to move back to Lancaster County, where they both grew up.
Bicycle Pie, located in a former antique shop, features exposed brick walls, aged wood floors and original details that aim to give the store a warm, welcoming feeling.
Peck hopes Bicycle Pie will grow into more than just a place to shop. Plans include children’s story times, in-store events and seasonal gatherings designed to bring local families together and make the shop a familiar stop in town.

MobilePack chairperson.
Every individual who signs up for a packing shift is asked to contribute a minimum of $63. “This covers the cost of one box of packed meals (216 meals), which is the average amount a single volunteer packs in a two-hour period,” Mangus Wenger said. “Basically, we encourage everyone to donate as they’re able. Whether a person can contribute 29 cents or $290, we welcome you to participate.”
Registrations will be taken starting Friday, Feb. 6, and will be accepted up until the day people participate. Go to https://tinyurl .com/2vezzzj9 to sign up.
If it is your first time to register for a FMSC event, you will need to set up a username and password to register as an individual or for your group. Go to https://www.fmsc.org/# and click “Log In.” Once you set up an account, click on “Volunteer,” then reserve the number of spots you will need for your group.
“I would encourage everyone to try it at least once because I think they will be pleasantly surprised at the impact that it has on them to be able to volunteer, as well as the idea that the food that they are packing, the next people who will touch it are those in need,” Mangus Wenger said. “You’re really making
a very direct, positive contribution to someone’s life.”
FMSC accepts volunteers as young as 5 years old. “One of (FMSC’s) taglines is ‘all ages and all abilities,’” said Mangus Wenger. “We have opportunities for people who need to sit. We can find a job for pretty much anyone of any ability.”
For more information, email Mangus Wenger at lmw4fmsc@gmail .com or call the church at 717-464-2422.
“The food through this organization is distributed around the world to those most in need,” said Mangus Wenger. “Feed My Starving Children, since 1987, has distributed more than 4 billion meals to more than 100 countries.”
Last year, the locally packaged food was sent to Malawi, the Dominican Republic, and Peru. “It is so important to me because, unfortunately, there’s an ongoing, huge need,” said Mangus Wenger. “It’s not that there’s not enough food in the world, but it’s not distributed in an even manner to everyone around the world, so there’s still a lot of people in the world who are malnourished or underfed.”
A pediatrician, Mangus Wenger is especially aware of the impact on the younger members of the world’s population. “Specifically, as far as children are con -

cerned, it’s so vital that they get good nutrition during the first two to five years of their life, because that’s when their brain is developing a lot,” she said. “It has a very long-term effect if they don’t get adequate nutrition at a young age.”
Everyone who attends is also asked to bring a nonperishable food item that will be donated to the Lancaster Food Hub. “We also are concerned about local food insecurity,” said Mangus Wenger. “As a community,

this is a great opportunity to help meet this need both locally and globally.”
Volunteers packed 400,000 meals last year. “Because the need is so great, this year we’re making a goal of packing 500,000 meals with the help of 2,000 volunteers from the community and raising $147,000 to cover the cost of the meals we are packing,” said Mangus Wenger. “Every person and penny is needed to help us reach our goal.”

get out of bed in the morning. Some want to have fun with their friends. If the goal is to be able to shoot at states, more time is going to be required, more effort. You need to be able to have flexibility in your program to cater to both types of people.”
Lancaster Archery Academy is home to three separate indoor shooting ranges for training, instruction and practice. The facility’s main range features 12 targets set downrange at an international standard distance of 18 meters, 23 target lanes, a waiting area and spectator space.
The academy’s JOAD program is actually two programs rolled into one. Shooters who attend the program that meets at Lancaster Archery Academy on Thursdays are generally less experienced or more casual, while the Saturday sessions tend to be more intense and designed for archers who are more experienced.
“It’s like any skill you want to improve,” said Baker. “(Students) are going to fail a lot, and that’s a good thing. You make mistakes, and you’re going to want to enjoy the process of archery. It doesn’t come right away, and it comes with practice. The more you practice, the more proficient you’ll get at it.”
“The approach I’d like to
Bridgeport Family Restaurant will hold its grand reopening on Friday, Feb. 6, from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. The restaurant is located at 1655 Old Philadelphia Pike (Route 340), Lancaster.
The restaurant will serve breakfast from 6 to 11 a.m., lunch from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and dinner from 4 to 8 p.m. Breakfast will also be served all day.
For more information, call the restaurant at 717-392-5943.

see archers take is, ‘Let’s see how good I can get at it. I don’t know, but I’m going to find out,’” added Baker. “That’s the question everyone should be asking at the beginning and at the end.”
Currently, there are about 70 archers between the ages of 8 and 20 enrolled in the JOAD program at Lancaster Archery Academy. The students reside in Lancaster County, southeastern Pennsylvania, other areas across the state, New York, New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland.
“These archers are people you walk past at supermarkets,” said Baker. “They’re the kids who play with your kids. They’re people. They’re your neighbors. They’re your friends. They’re you. You can enter it at any age and excel in it. Anbody can do this and enjoy this really cool experience.”
There are 10 instructors who work at the Lancaster Archery Academy, and many of those teachers instruct students enrolled in the JOAD program.
“Patience is important,”
said Baker. “Teaching archery is no different than teaching anything else. You have to understand the person you are teaching. You have to have conversations to learn on a deeper level. You teach basic aspects at the beginning. A lot of people understand how to do a large breadth of tasks, and all of those require motor skills and a mental frame.”
Many of the more serious JOAD archers compete in local, regional, national and international tournaments, as many as 24 tournaments in a year.
“The Junior Olympic Archery Development program was created by USA Archery in order to have a talented pool of competitors to pull from for major international events,” said Baker. “It’s been a vastly successful program. One of the reasons it’s been successful is because each JOAD program is given a wide latitude on how it executes its mission.”

The Trust Performing Arts Center will host its first Winter Ballroom Soirée on Saturday, Feb. 7, at 7 p.m. at The Trust, 37 N. Market St., Lancaster. The event will provide a blend of sophistication and fun for both experienced dancers and those stepping onto the ballroom floor for the first time.
Hosted by City Ballroom owner Rebecca Gentry, the Winter Ballroom Soirée will offer guided instruction to help guests feel more confident on the floor, along with opportunities to connect, celebrate, and dance. Both solo dancers and partners are welcome.
Gentry, a Lancaster-based teacher, mentor, and professionally trained ballet and ballroom dancer, dabbles in a variety of dance styles. She began teaching ballroom more than 20 years ago and has been on staff at both the Arthur Murray and Fred Astaire franchised dance studios. She has competed nationally in Professional American Style Smooth and was a finalist in both the Rising Star and Open Professional categories.
In addition to teaching ballroom dance, Gentry guest-teaches ballet, pointe, tap, and jazz in studios across Lancaster County and in Philadelphia. She has performed locally with the Grant Street Dance Company, UpFront Theatre Company, and Prima Theatre and has choreographed for UpFront and Prima, as well as the Lancaster Shakespeare Theatre, Servant Stage, and the Ephrata Performing Arts Center.
Gentry is the resident choreographer in the Columbia Borough and Manheim Central high school theater departments and for an annual Lancaster-based production of “The Rocky Horror Show.”

nervous, but I had a little bit of hope,” she said.
Casey Allyn, a radio personality and friend of Davis’, was bestowed the honor of divulging the winner. “When Casey called my name, it was utter shock and happiness that I get to serve my community,” said Davis.
Davis has been attending other local competitions to show support for her sister queens and will visit blood drives, which goes along with her community service initiative PhlebotomyFam. For more information about local scholarship competitions and PhlebotomyFam, go to https:// MissKathrynDavis.com.
She is grateful for the support from her coaches, Juven Nava and Annika Wooton of Crown the Nation, and her mother, Jozlyn Grodski.
Davis, who previously served as Miss Greater Reading’s Teen 2025 and Miss Lancaster County’s Teen 2024, is a freshman at Shippensburg University, where she is a member of the ROTC program and plans to major in history. Davis’ goal is to graduate from

Shippensburg as a second lieutenant in the Army. Her father, Timothy Davis, served in the Marines and is currently a member of the Air National Guard. The younger Davis had long mulled joining the armed forces but only recently decided to commit. “I never thought I was strong enough to do it,” she said. “I finally got the guts to do it. It’s important to me to serve my country, not only as a titleholder but also serving in the Army. My family always emphasized service. We always give what we don’t need
to people who need it. As a Christian, it’s what I am called to do, and I want to be the best version of myself I can be.”
