Words by HANNAH TAPPING
From windswept clifftops to shady woodland trails, Cornwall is a paradise for four-legged adventurers. Whether your pup is a beach sprinter, a moorland wanderer or a café-loving stroller, the Duchy offers endless opportunities to explore. Here are ten of our favourite dog walks, each highlighting a different facet of our beautiful county.
King Arthur and the Slate Coast — Treknow to Trebarwith Strand
Step back in time along ancient donkey tracks where slate was once hauled from the cliffs. This rugged wander offers jaw-dropping views, wildflowers in spring and a dog-friendly cove at journey’s end. Thirsts can be quenched and appetites sated at the Port William Inn at Trebarwith Strand. This hugely dog-friendly pub is right on the beach, with stunning views and warm welcomes for furry companions. They even serve a pooch-perfect pint, Proper Dog!
Padstow to Harlyn Bay
Sandy expanses, salty air and the occasional ice cream stop – this stretch is coastal Cornwall at its finest. At low tide, the beaches seem endless, giving dogs plenty of space to run, sniff and splash. The Shipwrights in Padstow Harbour serves award-winning beers and local fayre, welcoming dogs with open arms to this relaxed setting with its wonderful views. Or head to the Beach Box Café on the edge of Haryln Bay for coffee, breakfasts, toasties, pizzas and more.
n Fields near Trebarwith
n Port William
n Padstow
Gribbin Head, near Fowey
This is an easy-to-moderate loop taking in spectacular headland views and the iconic Gribbin Daymark. Discover beaches, coves, woodland and grassland rich in wildflowers. There’s a secluded dog-friendly beach at Polridmouth, perfect for a picnic break mid-walk. Head as far as Polkerris where Sam’s on the Beach welcomes pups on the terrace or experience a true Cornish pub treat at the Rashleigh Inn.
St Agnes Head to Wheal Coates
Here you’ll find heather-covered cliffs peppered by the remains of ancient tin mines. In summer, the scent of gorse and the glint of the sun on the Atlantic make a sensory treat for dogs and owners alike, while winter walks are bracing with wild storms and raging seas crashing onto the rocks below. The village of St Agnes is home to The Tap House which offers a warm welcome to all, whether on two legs or four, or head down the hill to The Driftwood Spars for a proper Cornish pub experience.
Lizard Point and Kynance Cove
Britain’s southernmost point is a heady mix of drama and beauty. The turquoise waters and serpentine rock formations are a feast for the eyes, while your dog will relish the cliff-top paths and hidden coves. Kynance Cove Café is a lovely place to while away an hour looking out to sea with a tasty treat. Pick up a pasty from Ann’s Pasties & Bar in Lizard village or head down to Lizard Point itself, where there are two delightful cafés, Polpeor and Wavecrest, both with amazing views out to sea.

The Camel Trail
Flat, accessible and gloriously scenic, this 18-mile former railway line can be enjoyed by dogs on leads in bite-sized chunks. Choose Padstow to Wadebridge for waterside views, or Wadebridge to Bodmin for leafy tranquillity. This walk is also ideal if you have a doggy stroller as the path is fairly flat and wide most of the way. Stop off at the Atlantic Coast Express between Wadebridge and Padstow; a super-cool, beautifullyconverted vintage train carriage serving al fresco food and drinks to anyone stopping at the halfway point.
Porthkidney Sands, near Hayle
Quiet, spacious and golden, Porthkidney is a dog’s dream. With few restrictions and plenty of space to bound about, it’s perfect for a game of fetch with the waves lapping at your feet. Head towards St Ives on the coast path and you’ll arrive at Carbis Bay with plenty of options for refuelling. Or once you’ve had a good walk, head back to Gilbert’s on North Quay in Hayle to discover a pocket of Cornish paradise, serving fabulous food and drinks with a laid-back vibe.
Tehidy Woods, near Camborne
This is Cornwall’s largest woodland spanning some 250 acres and offers over nine miles of trails under a leafy canopy. There’s a café for a well-earned cream tea, and plenty of benches to sit and listen to the birdsong while your dog snuffles in the undergrowth. The paths around the lake and the North Cliffs circular walk, also known as the Pink Trail are mainly on a level surface, so are easily accessible by wheelchairs and pushchairs. There are also other walks for the more adventurous with steeper hills and rougher surfaces.

Cardinham Woods, near Bodmin
Choose from several waymarked trails, each offering the soothing sounds of running streams and dappled sunlight. Discover iconic viewpoints, local wildlife, and a slice of unique Cornish history with the remnants of a former lead mine and an ancient clapper bridge. Whether you want a gentle dog walk by the cooling stream, or an energetic hike with the kids, Cardinham Woods has a walking trail for you. Refuel at the beautiful Woods Café, serving a range of freshly prepared light bites and drinks every day.
Roughtor, Bodmin Moor
For energetic hounds, this is the big adventure. Climb to the summit for sweeping moorland views, Bronze Age relics and the exhilarating sense of being on top of the world. Pack a picnic so you can pause and take it all in from a granite perch. As livestock and ponies roam free on the moors, your dog should be kept on a lead or under close control.
From coast to countryside, Cornwall is a playground for dogs and their owners. So, lace up your boots, clip on the lead and let your next adventure begin. Wherever you wander with your pup, you’ll leave with happy memories!

Four-legged
WELCOME IN FALMOUTH
A coastal escape where dogs are part of the experience.
St Michaels Resort in Falmouth has long been known for its laid-back comfort and prime location by Gyllyngvase beach. But for those travelling with a four-legged companion, it also offers something else – a genuine, all-encompassing welcome. One that isn’t an afterthought designed as a bolt-on to attract more guests.
Dogs are treated with consideration and thought throughout the resort. Dedicated dog-friendly rooms are available year-round, each equipped with a soft bed, water bowl and treats. Interiors reflect the calm, clean lines of coastal Cornwall – light, spacious and restful. From these rooms, it’s a short stroll to the beach and South West Coast Path, where dogs can roam on-lead or off, depending on the season and local guidelines.
There’s no need to leave your dog behind while you dine either. In Nourish, the resort’s relaxed bar and kitchen, dogs are welcome to sit beside their owners, under tables topped with colourful plates of locally sourced dishes.
After a long walk or a morning swim, it’s an easy place to refuel. Guests are also free to take their dogs to the bar area, where a cocktail or cold beer is often the end to a day well spent outdoors.
Those seeking a moment of stillness can head to the resort’s Spa Deck, where a sea-facing hot tub, barrel sauna and cold plunge await, while their dog rests in the room after a day of coastal adventures.
Dogs are welcomed without fuss. Rooms are ready, staff are accommodating and there’s space for them at the table. Everything is straightforward, making it easy to relax. One guest summed it up simply: “St Michaels was very welcoming and made our dog feel so included as part of our stay.”

Dog days
Hannah Gold captures the love between people and dogs through words and art.
Hannah Gold has spent a lifetime in the company of dogs. Her much-loved cocker spaniel, Monty, is both muse and companion, inspiring not only her acclaimed book Conversations with my Dog but also the portraits she creates for dog owners across Cornwall and beyond.
Hannah began taking commissions for dog portraits at just fifteen, honing her skill across a range of media including acrylic, pastel, pencil and gouache. Each piece goes beyond a likeness, capturing the quirks and essence that photographs alone often miss. Rather than replicating a single image, she blends elements from several snapshots to create a unique, soulful portrait. For those with no photos, a visit to her Mullion shop, Sacred Spiral Lifestyle, offers the chance for Hannah to take her own reference pictures and meet your dog in person.
Memorial portraits hold a special place in her work, offering comfort to those grieving a beloved companion. Each portrait takes several days to complete, making early booking essential for gifts or special occasions such as birthdays and Christmas. These paintings, created with patience and care, become lasting tributes that families treasure for years.
Alongside her art, Hannah writes with the same empathy that guides her brush. Conversations with my Dog is a light-hearted yet profound exploration of life, love, and companionship, expressed through imagined dialogues with Monty during their walks. Her recent autobiography, Into the Whispering Wild continues this reflective journey, while a sequel to her first book is currently in progress, promising more insight into the extraordinary relationship between people and their pets.
Visitors to Mullion are welcome to step into Sacred Spiral Lifestyle, where Hannah’s work is displayed and stories shared. Her portraits and her books, stand as testimony to the joy of living alongside dogs – and to the impressions they leave on our hearts.

All of St Austell Brewery’s pubs are dog friendly, but we’ve selected six of our favourite seaside boltholes. Expect fresh air, friendly teams, bowls and biscuits by the bar and pints that taste even better after a stomp along the South West Coast Path.
Harbour Inn, Porthleven
In Porthleven, where the harbour wall takes the full drama of Atlantic swells, the Harbour Inn sits right on the action. Inside it’s all scrubbed wood and picturewindow views; outside, gulls wheel over bobbing boats while dogs conk out under tables. It’s a brilliant base for an out-and-back to Loe Bar: a gentle, scenic walk that rewards you with dunes, freshwater lagoon glint and plenty of stick-throwing space. Back at base, something tasty from the menu with a pint of Tribute for you, cool water and a sneaky biscuit for your pooch – perfect.

DOG-FRIENDLY PRACTICALITIES TO KEPP THOSE TAILS KEEP WAGGING!
Where dogs can sit... Bars and terraces are generally dog-friendly; some dining rooms may be humans-only during peak service. Staff will guide you with a smile.
Bowls are standard... Many team members keep treats handy, ask if you’d prefer to opt out. Coastal Cornwall equals occasional squelch... Bring a small towel; most pubs are unfazed by clean, damp dogs.
The Pier House, Charlestown Tall ships, cobbles and creaking rigging bring perioddrama charm to Charlestown, and The Pier House is the postcard at its heart. Dogs receive a warm welcome in the bar and on the terrace, where masts etch the skyline. Stroll the harbour, amble along the clay-trail fragments beyond, then settle in for seafood and sea views. On blustery days, nab a fireside corner; on still evenings, the terrace is golden-hour heaven, with the clink of halyards for company and your dog happily people-watching.

Port Gaverne Inn, Port Gaverne
Tucked in a snug cove just around the headland from Port Isaac, the Port Gaverne Inn feels like a secret you’re delighted to share with your dog. This 17th-century inn wears its stone and slate well: low beams, flicker of candlelight and that soft murmur of post-walk contentment. The cove is a natural dogpaddle spot at low tide; climb the coastal path for views that go on and on, then reward yourself with something hearty and local back at the bar. Expect staff who remember your pup’s name by the second round.
The Old Success Inn, Sennen Cove
Land’s End’s neighbour is a sweep of white sand and turquoise water and The Old Success sits with frontrow seats. This is beach-life central: surfers hosing down boards, families shaking sand from shoes and dogs rediscovering the joy of sprinting just because. Take the high path to Gwynver for cliff-top drama, or dip to the shoreline when restrictions allow. Inside, the inn is bright and breezy, with big windows catching the light and bowls quietly appearing the moment a wet nose arrives.
The Wellington Hotel, Boscastle Boscastle’s wooded valley funnels to a narrow, dramatic harbour, and The Wellington stands watch like a storybook inn; because it is one. Low ceilings, creaking floors and just the right amount of ghost-lore. Dogs fit the vibe: welcome wanderers with muddy paws, rewarded with fuss at the bar and a cosy nap while you tuck into something comforting. Walk the blow-hole cliffs towards Pentargon for a proper legstretch; on wild-weather days, the sheltered riverside path is a gentler option with just as many sniffs.

The Godolphin, Marazion
Across the shallows, St Michael’s Mount rises like a dream, and The Godolphin gives you front-row magic. Sit on the terrace and watch the tide trace the causeway as dogs survey their beach kingdom below. When the sand opens, pad across to the Mount (respecting dog restrictions) or follow the bay curve towards Penzance for a flat, fetch-friendly wander. Inside, it’s light and contemporary, with that relaxed beach-house energy. Staff are quick with water and a welcome; you bring the sandy paws and contented sighs.
St Austell’s classic ales shine seaside. Tribute is a crisp, citrus-bright pale ale that pairs with fish and chips. Proper Job brings assertive hops for those cliff-path appetites. If you’re keeping it easy, lagers and lowalcohol options appear alongside seasonals; ask the team what’s pouring fresh. Then, at the end of each day, sink into sweet slumber in one of the pub’s cosy guestrooms. Whether you’re chasing sunsets or sheltering from a squall, a visit to a Cornish pub proves the best memories often come with sandy paws curled at your feet and the sea just beyond the glass.

Here’s how to ensure you’re fully equipped for your next adventure.
1. Take a stroll
If your dog loves to join you on coffee runs, market trips, or relaxed walks in the park, a pet stroller can be a game-changer. Ideal for small breeds, senior dogs, or pups recovering from an injury, a stroller lets them enjoy the fresh air without overexerting themselves.
2. Coast and country
For adventurous dogs who love the beach or the countryside, having the right gear can make all the
