Welcome
From the Editor
to the latest edition of Cornwall Living!
It’s hard to believe quite how fast this year has gone and that I’m sitting down to write the introduction to our Christmas edition! While I will always miss the hustle and bustle of the busy summer months – especially the warmth of the sun and those cool sea dips in clear waters – there’s something quite comforting about hunkering down for winter. The smell of suncream and pasties on my lunchtime stroll has been replaced by the heady waft of woodsmoke spiralling from chimneys, with undertones of salt and seaweed from winter storms. Wind whips up the waves and other walkers braving the elements pull hats down over ears to keep out the elements. Calling Cornwall home in winter is very special and, as Christmas lights turn on across towns and villages, there’s a growing sense of anticipation for the festivities ahead.
Our cover feature this issue (from page 15) takes us on a festive foray through Cornwall’s winter wonders, with eight extraordinary experiences that illuminate the season and capture its spirit perfectly; from the shimmering biomes of the Eden Project and the storytelling magic of Rogue Theatre’s Winter Wood, to candlelit choirs in Truro Cathedral and the nostalgic charm of Bodmin’s steam railway. We also explore timeless traditions at the National Trust’s Cotehele, where the famous flower garland continues to awe and inspire, and wander through the enchanting Night Garden at The Lost Gardens of Heligan, where light and sound bring nature to life after dark. Down by the harbour, Padstow’s Christmas Fayre brings the best of Cornish food, creativity and coastal cheer. Each event reminds us that joy can be found everywhere; in a shared song, a moment of pause or the sparkle of lights reflected on the water.
Christmas is a time for feasting, and our foodie pages are full of seasonal delights. From the welcoming warmth of St Austell Brewery’s pubs (page 33), to the Hidden Hut’s fiery feasts (from page 34) and the relaxed elegance of Kota and Kota Kai (from page 36), we celebrate the flavours that bring us together on winter evenings. However, Christmas is also a time for reflection and giving back. We take a closer look at Clothes Horse in Newquay (page 46), a charity whose mission turns fashion finds into meaningful community support. And finally, as we hear from the winners of this year’s Cornwall Living Awards (from page 29), we’re reminded once again of the people and businesses who make this county extraordinary. So, as you turn these pages, I invite you to join me in celebrating a Cornwall filled with light, laughter and love this Christmas.
...happy reading!

As the darker months roll in, it’s an obvious time to reimagine your living space and bring in touches of warmth and comfort for the colder months ahead. This autumn and winter, sustainable lighting specialists Tom Raffield are subtly illuminating the dark with two striking new designs, Kompass and Morna, alongside fresh takes on some of their most iconic creations.
Embracing nature’s design, the new Morna Pendant takes inspiration from looping, arched shapes of blooming wild flowers found along the south west coast path at Lamorna Cove. While the Kompas pendant joins the Urchin Lighting Range, taking inspiration from wildlife found in Cornish waters. It has a distinctive radial pattern veiling the bulb within. Within

Designer insight ‘rooms within rooms’
According to the design team at Now Kitchens, one of the biggest trends in modern interiors is the idea of ‘rooms within rooms’. As our homes become more multifunctional, open-plan spaces are evolving to include cleverly defined zones – from hidden bars and breakfast nooks to walk-in pantries, utility rooms and even small home offices.
“It’s all about how people really live,” explains Darren, founder of Now Kitchens. “A well-planned kitchen should feel calm and cohesive, even when it’s designed to be multi-functional.”
Through thoughtful layout, tailored cabinetry and subtle material changes, Now Kitchens creates spaces that flow seamlessly while maintaining their individuality. The result is a home that feels both practical and beautifully designed – where every inch works harder without losing its sense of style.

New Global Pasty Championships set to launch
The Lost Gardens of Heligan will celebrate the finest Cornish pasty bakers in the world when it hosts the first-ever Global Pasty Championships on February 28th, 2026.
Taking place on the Saturday before St Piran’s Day, the event, presented in partnership with the Cornish Pasty Association, will feature a competition to find the best pasties in the world.
While the Cornish pasty remains hugely popular in its homeland, with the industry worth £300m annually, variations are in
evidence globally thanks to Cornish miners travelling around the world. David Harland, chief executive of The Lost Gardens of Heligan, said: “We are delighted to be launching the Global Pasty Championships at Heligan, the spiritual home of the Cornish pasty. This will be an event stuffed full of pasty-themed fun and entertainment, all encased in a crimped golden crust of elite culinary competition.”

Award-winning wine expert Tom Gilbey is one of the UK’s most charismatic wine experts and invites readers to discover the joy, hilarity and humanity of wine in his new book Thirsty. It’s a vibrant memoir-meets-guide bursting with 100 unforgettable wines and the even juicier stories behind them. “I like to talk about wine the way normal humans talk about things they love – it’s not about showing off how many fancy wine terms I know. The point is to share something I love with someone else in a way that makes them want to love it too,” says Tom.
The book is a joyous celebration of living the good life while cherishing each sip along the way and for Tom the two are inseparable. Thirsty is the story of Tom’s life in wine; a celebration of all the fascinating characters who make it along with a history of the Gilbey’s family love affair with winemaking and – let’s be honest –drinking it since the 1800s.
Expect to learn how to read a label (even if you can’t speak the language), how to talk wine without sounding naff, choosing wine in a restaurant, why some wine might

Warmth WITH PURPOSE
AModern wood-burning stoves combine efficiency with enduring environmental responsibility.
s energy costs rise and sustainability becomes ever more central to how we live, the wood-burning stove is reasserting its place in the British home. Once considered a nostalgic feature, it has evolved into a practical, efficient and environmentally responsible means of heating, particularly well-suited to dwellings in Cornwall. For those seeking reliable warmth and a tangible connection to the natural world, today’s modern stove offers something reassuring.
Modern wood stoves bear little resemblance to the smoky open fires of the past. Designed to meet stringent Ecodesign standards, they release up to 90 per cent fewer emissions than an open fire and around 80 per cent less than many older stoves. This leap in performance is attributed to better engineering, including controlled airflow, cleaner combustion and highly efficient heat transfer. The result is simple: more warmth from each log and far less waste. For those living in Smoke Control Areas, Defra-exempt or ClearSkies-certified models
meet the highest standards of air quality and efficiency, proving that environmental care and comfort can coexist.
Wood, when burned correctly using properly seasoned or Ready-to-Burn certified logs, remains one of the most sustainable heat sources available. Trees absorb carbon dioxide as they grow, and when that wood is later used as fuel, the carbon released forms part of a short, renewable cycle. In contrast to fossil fuels, which release carbon stored over geological time, wood fuel completes a natural loop. In Cornwall, where local woodland and sawmill by-products are plentiful, this approach makes even greater sense. Choosing locally sourced logs not only supports rural jobs and businesses but also encourages biodiversity through active woodland management – a small but meaningful contribution to the health of the landscape.
The resilience of a wood-burning stove is another of its strengths. Anyone familiar with the unpredictability of a Cornish winter will know that power cuts are not uncommon. A modern stove, independent of both gas and electricity, provides dependable warmth whatever the weather brings. It is a simple form of energy security that many households now see as essential.
Far from competing with renewable systems like heat pumps, modern stoves complement them well. While heat pumps maintain an even background temperature, a stove offers immediate, radiant warmth to a main living area – particularly valuable on cold evenings or during sudden drops in temperature. Used together, they create an efficient and balanced approach to home heating.
Style, too, has kept pace with technology. The variety available today is broad: from contemporary steel designs suited to coastal new builds to classic cast-iron models ideal for traditional cottages. Many stoves can
also be fitted with external air supply kits, ensuring efficient operation in airtight or energy-efficient homes. The common thread across all designs is a focus on reliability, safety and long-term performance, qualities that endure well beyond seasonal trends.
Supporting local expertise is another benefit often overlooked. By choosing to buy and install through a specialist such as Wendron Stoves, customers are also supporting a network of British manufacturers, retailers, installers and chimney sweeps – many of them family-run and based in the South West.
An Ecodesign-compliant, ClearSkiescertified stove will always provide the best environmental performance. Proper installation is vital, ideally by a qualified HETAS or OFTEC registered professional and annual chimney sweeping remains essential to both safety and efficiency. Using dry, quality wood fuel is equally important – look for the Ready to Burn logo to ensure logs are at or below 20 per cent moisture content. These are not onerous steps, but rather the simple habits that ensure a stove runs cleanly and effectively for years to come.
Modern wood stoves have a confirmed place in the future of energy-efficient homes. Their role has shifted from luxury to logic: they provide warmth that is immediate, renewable, and resilient. For Cornish homeowners they offer a dependable source of comfort drawn from local materials and local knowledge.
Wendron Stoves combines traditional wood-burning efficiency with low-emission technology, heating your home while minimising your carbon footprint.

Roast and RAMBLE
Sundays in Cornwall are made for windswept walks and roast dinners done right.
With St Austell Brewery’s pubs dotted across some of the most beautiful corners of the county, you’re never far from a cracking spot to round off your weekend.
With 26 managed pubs across Cornwall, from the Isles of Scilly to Fowey, and many places in between, it’s easy to pair a good stomp with a great Sunday roast. Think dramatic cliffside paths, peaceful woodland trails and sea views that stop you in your tracks – complete with a warm, welcoming pub waiting at the end. What better reward?
Why not start with a walk along the South West Coast Path and finish with a roast that hits the spot? Some favourites include the Port William, perched above the cliffs at Tintagel, the Rising Sun in St Mawes, with its dreamy harbourfront views, and the Punchbowl and Ladle, a cosy countryside spot tucked away near Truro.
At the Rising Sun, it’s all about location. Opposite the harbourfront and just a stone’s throw from the coast path, it’s the perfect spot. Inside the pub, you’ll find a newly refurbished space and a Sunday menu full of South West flavour – from farm-fresh vegetables to meats from local butchers like Brian Etherington. Afterwards, why not hop on the St Mawes ferry to explore the bustling town of Falmouth, famous for its fascinating
maritime heritage and modern creativity? Pop into another of St Austell Brewery’s pubs, the Chain Locker, to enjoy a pint overlooking the water.
Over in Tintagel, the Port William is your go-to for a roast dinner after a day exploring the legend of King Arthur and ancient castle ruins. Take a seat outdoors – adorned with cosy sheepskins and throws – whilst taking in the sweeping views of Trebarwith Strand.
If you’re craving a countryside escape, the Punchbowl and Ladle is a real hidden gem. Surrounded by woodland walks and full of rustic charm, this traditional thatched pub is a firm favourite for families – dogs included. On Sundays, a live pianist adds a little extra magic to your meal, making it feel like a proper occasion.
Sundays are made for slowing down, and there’s no better place to do that than at one of St Austell Brewery’s welcoming pubs. Whether you’re catching up with friends over a hearty roast or heading out for a peaceful coastal walk, followed by a fireside pint, these pubs offer the perfect mix of comfort, character and local flavour.

THE HIDDEN HUT
Words by Martyn Odell
Actually, it’s not so hidden anymore.
The Hidden Hut may be hidden from view, but its reputation? That ship has well and truly sailed. I’ve visited a handful of times and every single time I post a photo, my inbox explodes like I’ve just announced free pasties for life. “OMG, isn’t it AMAZING?!” Yes, Sharon, yes, it is.
AKA Lagom Chef
Getting there involves a short downhill stumble from the car park to Porthcurnick Beach – about five minutes of British politeness as you navigate the narrow walkway, giving way to other visitors. That is, until the hypnotic scent of wood-fired food kicks in and all social niceties evaporate. Suddenly, it’s every man for himself.
Founded by Simon Stallard and Jemma Glass, the day-to-day magic is orchestrated by Dan Wilson (head chef), Lee Trevena (sous chef), and Tors Trevena (manager). During peak summer season, this mighty team serves over 1,000 people a day – smashing out incredible dahls, fish stews, pork buns, and those legendary mackerel BLTs. You’ve probably seen their Instagram-famous Feast nights: a massive table on the beach, fire-cooked food, golden hour lighting. It’s basically a Viking banquet without the pillaging.
But what happens when the summer tourists head for home?
A lot of out of county visitors see Cornwall as strictly a summer destination, but there is so much more to Cornwall than boogie boarding in ill-fitting wetsuits, arcade machines and ice creams inevitably stolen by overzealous seagulls. The Hut stays open for the truly brave souls through to November (weekends only after half term for lunches, coffees and cakes), offering a cosy menu of roast meat rolls, beef rib with horseradish and watercress, proper dripping gravy on the side, rotating through pork, chicken and lamb. Plus autumnal soups and fish stews with freshly baked potato bread rolls and salty butter. Honestly, what more do you need after a stormy beach walk? This!
Enter: flame
every Friday from October 24th through March, locals pre-order their food, get a collection time, then swing by to grab it. Rock up early? Grab a pint and get cosy in the pub’s courtyard-turned-winter-snug while you wait.
The menu is gloriously simple: one main dish, a few sides. Think chicken shawarmas, double smash burgers, racks of ribs with chipotle BBQ and slaw. As Dan puts it: “It’s dirty food for the locals. They love it, and so do we.”
But wait, there’s more... This is what I really love about Cornwall: the commitment to being pillars of the community. The Hidden Hut crew aren’t content with just summer feasts and winter takeaways. This year, they’re trialling “The Hidden Hut Supper Series.” The pub shuts on Tuesdays for these ticketed events, where you’ll sit down to big sharing plates of winter warmers: shepherd’s pie, cassoulets, lasagnes, all cooked in wood-fired ovens. Loads of wine, cheese and the occasional quiz thrown in for good measure. It’s their first year testing it out, so get in quick before the secret’s out (again). I might well see you at the table, I’ll be the one polishing off the cheeseboard!
Winter in Cornwall is a different beast entirely. When the tourists vanish, the local communities hunker down for the harsh months ahead. Which led me to ask Dan the obvious question: “What do you do in winter? You can’t just hibernate in the hut?” “No, Martyn,” he said. “We turn to flame.”
Come proper winter, the team pivots to “Flame”, their wood-fired takeaway operation run from the outside kitchen at their pub, The Standard Inn. Starting
No plans for Christmas?
f you need a change of scenery over the festive period, chuck on some boots and get down to the Hidden Hut as they open the hatches from Boxing Day all the way through to January 5th. Plan not be the designated driver and bring a bottle of wine down to enjoy with some delicious food!
The Hut is a special place in the Cornish food scene, run by a cracking team who will feed you some of the best wood-fired food, whether it’s from the hut, The Standard Inn or from one of their big feasting tables. You will not be disappointed, so get down there no matter the weather.
LAGOM CHEF

Porthleven is a harbour village bursting with festive spirit, community warmth and food that celebrates the season in every bite.
There’s something about Christmas in Cornwall that gets right under your skin. Maybe it’s the salty tang in the air, or the way the harbour lights reflect off the water, turning Porthleven into a little jewel on the south coast. Whatever it is, this place knows how to do winter properly with festive spirit and a whole lot of good food.
As December settles in, the storms roll in off the Atlantic, the gulls ride the gusts and the light turns golden and low. The visitors have gone, but the locals remain, walking their dogs along Loe Bar, chatting over coffee and preparing for the season’s celebrations.
When the Christmas lights are switched on, the whole harbour seems to hold its breath. The roads are strung with fairy lights, the brass band strikes up a carol and the scent of mulled wine drifts through the air. Children’s laughter and excitement mingle with the sound of the waves and the arrival of Santa and for a moment, everything feels perfectly Cornish.
For me, Christmas is all about bringing people together around food; real food, cooked with love and a sense of place. At Kota and Kota Kai, we spend weeks planning how to weave that festive spirit into our dishes. The kitchens hum with energy, the air filled with the scent of roasting meats and spices. I like to take the flavours of Christmas and give them a Cornish and Asian twist – a little surprise, a little comfort. You might find slow-braised beef cheek cooked with soy, ginger, and star anise, served alongside silky Cornish mash. Or a fillet of line-caught fish, pan-roasted and glazed with lobster butter, shellfish, pickled sea vegetables, along with seasonal brassicas. It’s about balance, where richness combines with freshness and depth with brightness.
Our ingredients tell the story of where we are. Scallops from pots in Falmouth Bay; crab from Newlyn; game from local shoots and moors; vegetables from nearby farms and even sea herbs foraged along the coast when the weather allows. Cornwall keeps giving, even in the cold months. The sea is still teeming with life, the fields still producing beautiful, hardy produce.
stronger at this time of year. You see it in the lantern parades, the charity raffles, the school concerts and the impromptu sing-alongs in the pub. Everyone plays their part in keeping the harbour alive with warmth and light.
On Christmas Day, a few brave souls take the plunge into the harbour for the traditional swim – a mad but joyful way to welcome the morning. Then it’s home for a proper roast, a glass of wine, and the comforting crackle of a fire.
By evening, when the tide is high and the air smells faintly of woodsmoke, Porthleven falls quiet again. The lights shimmer across the water, the gulls roost on the pier and the sound of the sea becomes the night’s carol. It’s peace, Cornish-style – wild and calm, all at once.
And dessert? That’s where the fun really begins. A Christmas pudding ice cream sundae infused with apple and brandy miso caramel – the perfect bridge between my Asian heritage and the Cornish love of indulgence. Sweet, salty, tangy and utterly festive.
Christmas in Cornwall reminds me of what’s truly important. Gratitude for the land and sea that sustain us. Gratitude for the people who make this village such a joy to live and work in. And gratitude for the chance to slow down, share a meal and reflect on the year gone by.

This Christmas, we are open at Kota Kai and we have the full festive menu. We are really looking forward to welcoming everyone for a fabulous day, and even my own family will be coming for Christmas dinner. I can’t wait to enjoy the day with family, staff, and friends – it will be a big celebration for us all.
What makes Christmas in Porthleven so special isn’t just the food or the views – it’s the people. The fishermen who still head out at dawn, the artists painting through the rain, the café owners who keep their doors open and their coffee hot. There’s a sense of togetherness that feels even
Porthleven may be small, but its heart beats big and at Christmas, that heart shines brighter than ever. Whether you’re a local or just passing through, the warmth here is real. So if you find yourself in Cornwall this winter, take a detour down to our harbour. Wrap up warm, grab a glass of mulled cider and let the sea air remind you what Christmas in Porthleven is really about; it’s lived, shared and savoured, one plate, one wave and one smile at a time.
Exhibiting across Cornwall and beyond, from intimate coastal galleries to international art fairs, has brought Gemma Lessinger into conversation with people who connect to the sea in countless different ways. “Today, my work continues to evolve. From large-scale commissions and repurposed surfboards, to collaborations with brands and makers who share my values, I’m constantly exploring new ways to connect people with the ocean. The sea has always been my sanctuary; through art, it’s also become my language.”
As a master monochrome photographer Chris Tuff has always eschewed conventional colour photography, preferring to work with the abstracted reality of black and white; so, when he did feel inspired to try and capture the colour palette of the Cornish landscape it was perhaps inevitable that he would take an alternative approach.
In his Shorelines series, the images are at once both familiar and abstract, inhabiting a liminal space between photographic representation and pure abstraction, inviting the viewer to see landscape not simply as topography, but as geometry, rhythm, and the interplay of colour and texture.

Melody Ryder creates beautiful freehand machine embroidered lampshades using designs inspired by living in Cornwall. She then uses these designs to stitch onto felt creating elegant lampshades, lanterns and pictures.
“My signature backgrounds tend to include a natural colour felt made from 40% wool and 60% acrylic. This produces a softer shade of light and also allows the design on the shade to be lit to its full potential,” Melody explains. “I also love the tactile feeling of the felt and the touch of indulgence that it gives to something that can be enjoyed every day.” Some of her designs incorporate the use of Liberty Print fabrics and alongside these, she takes elements of her designs and,
The images are undoubtedly influenced by the meditative rigour of the Japanese Photographer, Hiroshi Sugimoto’s ‘Seascapes’ where horizon lines bisect the frame in austere symmetry. Like Sugimoto, they reduce the ocean to its essential forms, stripping away all anecdotal elements of place, evoking a sense of timelessness.

Cornwall’s independent specialists offering advanced, personalised hearing and tinnitus care.
Celebrating two years in practice, K&M Hearing Solutions has become a trusted name in Cornwall’s audiology community. In that time, the clinic has established close working relationships with local GP surgeries and provides diagnostic services for the Ear, Nose and Throat Clinic at the Duchy Hospital. Patients are often referred directly by their doctors, reflecting the confidence the medical community places in their expertise.
Founded on the belief that every ear tells a different story, K&M Hearing Solutions takes a personalised approach to care. Whether someone is exploring hearing aids for the first time, looking to upgrade, or considering alternative options, each consultation is shaped around individual needs rather than a one-size-fits-all solution. The clinic’s guiding principle is simple: to support patients through every stage of their hearing journey.
In addition to an extensive range of hearing aids from leading manufacturers, K&M Hearing Solutions is the only clinic in Cornwall to offer Lace AI Pro, a clinically proven auditory training programme designed to help the brain process sound more effectively. Many people with hearing loss find it difficult to follow conversations in busy environments such as cafés or restaurants. Lace AI Pro retrains the brain
to filter and interpret sound, restoring clarity and confidence in everyday listening situations.
The team also provides Nuance amplified glasses – a discreet alternative for those with mild to moderate hearing loss. Each fitting begins with a thorough ear health check, including hearing tests and otoscopy, to ensure the solution is right for the individual.
Beyond hearing aids and assistive technology, K&M Hearing Solutions offers comprehensive tinnitus support. Founder Kara, a qualified audiologist and Hearing Therapist, is a Corporate Member of Tinnitus UK and specialises in tailored management plans, including access to Oto, a cognitive behavioural therapy programme designed to help manage symptoms effectively.
For anyone seeking practical, professional advice or ongoing support with their hearing health, K&M Hearing Solutions has quickly earned its reputation as the place to turn for “all things ears.”

Keeping clothes in CIRCULATION
A Newquay hub turning preloved children’s clothes into societal impact.
In a world where fast fashion and cheap imports often overshadow sustainability, The Clothes Horse in Newquay is building something that encourages us to stop and think about our purchases and to offer something back to those less fortunate. It is social tipping in action. Founded nine years ago as a community interest company, it focuses on helping families across Cornwall access affordable, good-quality children’s clothing while keeping tonnes of textiles out of landfill. Its work rests on a simple exchange: families donate outgrown garments or make a voluntary contribution for items they take home, ensuring every transaction directly supports the running of the hub and the continuation of its services – a sustainable, circular micro-economy in action.
In this sense The Clothes Horse is more than a clothing exchange; it is a social effort, a pole of resistance that can inspire and help mobilise our better values: altruism, empathy, community, family and the pursuit of a more just and equitable world. Since opening its doors in 2016, it has saved 14 tonnes of clothing from landfill, a tangible achievement in an era of disposable fashion. Beyond its Newquay base, the organisation also works with schools, community groups and partner charities, providing clothing parcels for families facing hardship, including refugees, those experiencing homelessness or people fleeing domestic abuse.
One of its bedrocks is the belief that every child deserves to feel comfortable and confident in what they wear, and that fashion should not come at the cost of the planet. This winter, its Christmas Jumper Appeal highlights that mission in action, encouraging families to donate festive knitwear rather than buy new. By keeping jumpers in circulation, The Clothes Horse demonstrates how small, local acts can chip away at global waste.
The organisation’s achievements have been made possible through a mix of local generosity and formal support from funders such as the Cornwall Community Foundation, The National Lottery and Seedbed. Yet volunteers remain the backbone of the enterprise, giving time and energy to sorting, displaying and distributing clothing with care.
Plans are now in motion to launch a Crowdfunder to improve the hub and strengthen its future. In every sense, The Clothes Horse shows that with imagination and the willpower to pursue an idea, change is possible; how something small can become the catalyst to create a new common sense.

Restoring Cornwall’s
LOST RAINFOREST
When most people think of Cornwall, they think of sweeping coastlines, big waves and glorious beaches.

Lichen Pelynt
Yet, tucked away in a damp, green valley near Looe, Cornwall Wildlife Trust is starting work to restore one of the world’s rarest and most enchanting habitats – a temperate rainforest.
Unlike tropical rainforests, these magical woodlands thrive in cool, misty climates, where mosses, lichens, and ferns drape every tree trunk and branch. Once widespread across the British Isles, less than 1% now remains.
has recently been found – a true hallmark of temperate rainforest conditions that demonstrates the importance of the site.

Temperate rainforest at West Muchlarnick
This precious ecosystem will be restored at West Muchlarnick, near Looe, thanks to the generosity of Cornwall Wildlife Trust supporters and a long-term partnership with Aviva. A public appeal in 2024 raised more than £67,000 from members and supporters of the Trust. Earlier this year, Aviva committed long-term funding as part of its 50-year, £38 million UK Temperate Rainforest Restoration Programme, enabling the planting of 30,000 native trees.
The 150-acre site, lying in the humid West Looe Valley, is perfectly placed for rainforest revival, with ancient hedgerows, veteran trees, and streamside fragments of woodland that have remained unchanged for hundreds of years.
Survey work has already revealed the remarkable biodiversity hidden within this landscape. Over 130 species of lichen have been recorded so far, including 19 species for which the UK has an international responsibility to conserve. The globally rare hazel gloves fungus (Hypocreopsis rhododendri)
Other discoveries, such as dormouse evidence in the woodland fringe, are shaping the woodland’s design, with new planting and wildlife corridors planned to connect and protect these sensitive species. In addition, surveys have identified key areas with rich meadow habitat, which will be retained as grassland and enhanced through cattle grazing. An area of drained land will also be restored as a wetland, benefiting wildlife and improving the resilience of the catchment by slowing the flow of water into the West Looe River.
A programme of events, including guided walks, volunteering and tree planting days, is planned as the project progresses, involving local schools and the community as much as possible in this fantastic adventure. Project Manager Alison Smith says: “Restoring this incredible habitat will provide vital refuge for wildlife, store carbon, and benefit local communities for generations to come.”
You can find out more about the project and get involved by visiting the website and searching for the temperate rainforest restoration project.
