EZZY LYNN Instagram: @ezzylynn |

20SS: Who are Ezzy and Lynn? Ezzy lives a compassionate, free spirited lifestyle: she buys her groceries at a farmer’s market, wears vintage clothing, isn’t afraid to go barefoot and loves hot yoga. Ezzy adores wild cats, shopping online and attending music festivals. Lynn values her sophisticated regimen: she works in a corporate environment, wears expensive perfume, exclusively eats vegetarian and never misses pilates. Lynn shops high-end, is well networked and loves her pet cat. Both ladies appreciate the ‘details’ and unite over one product: the scrunchie. 20SS: How did this idea come to be and how long have you been in business? We launched the business in May 2014 as a way for Co-Founders Bianca, Samantha and Sonja to unite their many passions: social entrepreneurship, fashion and wildlife conservation. We knew we loved animals and we all wore scrunchies, the rest has been a whirlwind from there! 20SS: Who can buy your products? You can purchase Ezzy Lynn scrunchies online at ezzylynn.com. Currently, we ship within Canada and USA. 20SS: Are you hoping to expand into other accessories in the future? Absolutely! We see this as a lifestyle, accessories brand. Over summer 2014 our team experimented with flower crowns, embellished hair clips and headbands. We have a few exciting products under wraps for fall/winter 2014 and can’t wait to share on our website at ezzylynn.com 20SS: How many animal adoptions have you made to date? As of September 2014, Ezzy Lynn has adopted 16 endangered animals including 3 Tigers, 2 Giant Pandas and a Great White Shark. 20SS: What organization do you adopt your animals from? Currently, Ezzy Lynn supports animals through the World Wildlife Fund’s species adoption program. 20SS: How can we get involved in adopting animals and purchasing Ezzy Lynn accessories to help? PAGE

THIS IS HALLOWEEN - EVERYBODY MAKE A SCENE!

WHAT YOU WILL NEED TO COMPLETE THIS LOOK: • • • • •

You’re everyday makeup preparation kit (foundation, concealer, contour, highlight, etc.) August’s issue of 20 SS - ‘Your Brow Cheat Sheet” and tools Eyeshadow primer Violet, green, matte black and shimmery white eyeshadows Black liquid liner

• • • • • •

Strip of false lashes Lash adhesive Eyelash curler Black kohl liner Black mascara Crazy coloured contacts (I bought the Lunar Eyes.)

This look is a great way to dress up for Halloween yet look professional for work and everyday tasks. I suggest pairing this with either a deep violet, green or black lips. If you’re a diehard Halloween fan (like me) than you will most likely enjoy this. 1. Prep your face as you would for your everyday look. 2. Using August’s beauty article “Your Brow Cheat Sheet”, fill in your brows. 3. Apply eyeshadow primer to your eyelids.

4

6

4. Grab your purple eyeshadow and a medium sized blending brush and apply it to the crease of your eye and under the lower lash line (always make sure to blend!)

5. Now take your green eyeshadow and apply it to the middle of your eyelid with a flat shadow brush. 6. Using a small blending brush apply matte black shadow to the outer corners of the eyes and under the bottom lash line. Blend slightly into crease/green pigment.

7

8

7. Find your white shimmery shadow and apply it to the inner corners of your eyes and brow bone with a flat brush. Make sure to blend the white into the violet. 8. Now grab your black liquid liner and line the top row of your lash line. 9. Looking straight in the mirror - line the angle that you would like to start your spider web at.

9

10

10. Keep looking straight in the mirror – following the same angle and make a second third and fourth line, bring it all the way down to your lashes. Then line the lower set of lashes and connect the two. 11. Now attach all four lines together with droopy/web looking lines.

11

13

12. Once the liner is completely dry, use an eyelash curler to curl your lashes and apply mascara to both top and bottom lashes. 13. Apply black kohl liner to the top and bottom waterlines of your eye and seal by adding matte black shadow over top. 14. Using your strip lashes, use the adhesive to glue them to the upper lash line. Wait until they are dry and set with mascara to blend your lashes together.

14

15

15. This step is completely optional. Grab your crazy coloured contacts and apply to your eyes. Make sure to read the instructions before use.

20SS: WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO OPEN MAS ACTING STUDIOS IN SUDBURY? MELISSA SMITH: Sudbury is my hometown and as a teenager I was involved in community theatre. After realizing that acting was something I wanted to pursue professionally, I quickly found that Sudbury did not offer the opportunities that I was searching for. If I wanted to work in film and television, I had to commute to Toronto weekly to attend auditions, meet with my agent and of course, to train. Training is an aspect that is very much overlooked by new performers but it is so vital. Like an athlete, you constantly have to be training, bettering yourself and improving your craft! Thanks to the funding opportunities in Northern Ontario (i.e. NOHFC) and our talented local producers, filming in Sudbury has never been more appealing. Opportunities are growing rapidly for those interested in performing and we need to have competitive talent to fill the roles. We have a slate of projects shooting in Northern Ontario over the next year and opening a training facility was the next step for us. Sudbury has talent and we want to see it grow! 20SS: WHAT DOES MAS ACTING STUDIOS OFFER TO SUDBURY TALENT? MS: We offer a professional training facility for brand new performers and experienced performers alike. You are never too young or too old to break into the business. Our services range from weekly classes, monthly workshops & seminars with industry professionals, training for voice-over, modelling and improv. We also offer professional self-taping services and personal coaching. The studio brings together a community of local performers who are ready to get working. 20SS: WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PART OF YOUR JOB? MS: The most enjoyable and rewarding part about being a Casting Director is watching ascript come to life on screen and being there at the beginning of the process to help find the right individuals to bring the characters to life. As a teacher, I love working with actors and helping them achieve their goals. I have witnessed a number of my Sudbury students go on to book speaking roles, gain their union status and pursue larger scale projects. Being part of someone else’s success is very rewarding. 20SS: HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN THE INDUSTRY? MS: I have been lucky enough to work on both sides of the camera - as an actor and Casting Director. I began my acting career eleven years ago and transitioned into casting over four years ago, working under very high profile Casting Director’s in Toronto and now with my own company, Melissa A. Smith Casting.

The Spotlight www.20somethingsudbury.ca

20SS: WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SUDBURY’S ASPIRING ACTORS? HOW CAN THEY GET INVOLVED IN THE INDUSTRY? MS: Get started in any capacity that you can, be it as a background performer, crew member or intern. Projects are hiring Northerners to fill various positions and it is a great way to make contacts and learn about the production side of filmmaking. I want to tell Northern actors that it is possible to become a working actor at home! Many aspiring actors let their interest take a back seat because they do not think it is possible for them to work in the North as an actor. I have cast individuals who have very little experience in principal speaking roles in the North and down south. It is possible, and with an understanding of the industry you can be very successful. Sudbury is growing rapidly and now is the time to build your c.v.! 20SS: WHAT CLASSES DO YOU OFFER? MS: Our studio offers on-camera and voice training for individuals of all ages and experience levels. We recently expanded our program roster with our Modelling Program being lead by Kelly Lamb (CDM) and our Improv Program being lead by comedian Shawn McLaren. For actor’s who are just starting out and want to discover if acting is for them, we offer the “Introduction To On-Camera Performance” program. If you have some experience and want to be ready for upcoming opportunities, we offer “The Actor’s Workout”, a weekly class that keeps performers sharp. A list of class and workshop offerings can be found on our website: www.masactingstudios.com 20SS: UPCOMING SPECIAL EVENTS? MS: Recently we unveiled THE VAULT RECORDING STUDIO in house at MAS ACTING STUDIOS. Opportunities don’t stop at the camera and we want to reflect that in our studio program offerings. We see many actors utilizing their voices for radio, commercials and animation. The opportunities are out there and we want to help get our actors working. We also hold monthly industry seminars to introduce new talent to the industry both up North and down South. We cover everything from reputable agents to the union. Our next seminar is taking place October 19th from 5:00 - 8:00 P.M. at the studio. 20SS: ARE THERE ANY OPEN CASTING CALLS ACTORS CAN ATTEND? MS: We actively post our open calls on our website and social media. For unrepresented actors, the best way to get involved is to keep up to date by joining our mailing list or on Casting Workbook. 20SS: WHAT DO YOU LOOK FOR IN SUDBURY’S TALENT AS A CASTING DIRECTOR? MS: I am looking for individuals who understand the process and business aspect of being a working performer. You need to be ready for opportunity and understand the basics. For example always arriving prepared with a headshot/resume for each audition. I am looking for fresh faces and people who are easy to work with. Experience isn’t everything, professionalism is. 20SS: WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 5 YEARS? WHAT ACCOMPLISHMENT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF SO FAR? MS: Opening the studio here in Sudbury has certainly been a proud accomplishment and watching our students who work so hard in class, book work is very gratifying. Our mandate is to keep current and continuously offer new content to help our students grow. My intention is to stick to my roots and bring opportunities back to the North be it through casting or training. Over the next five years, I intend on producing meaningful and bold content under our production company OPAL ENTERTAINMENT INC. We are currently working on a few really interesting co-productions and I would like to see that grow. Angelina Marcantognini canada’s worst driver

20SS: WHAT WAS YOUR EXPERIENCE ON THE SHOW LIKE? AM: My experience on the show was pretty awesome. I really enjoyed meeting everyone, the cast, the crew, the participants. I feel as if I learnt a lot and I definitely know I’ve gained some huge life experiences that I will always remember and always cherish. 20SS: WHO NOMINATED YOU TO BE ON THE SHOW AND HOW DID YOU FEEL ABOUT IT? AM: My best friend nominated me for the show. When she first nominated me I wasn’t too sure about appearing on national television to display my rather colourful driving skills but then again I wasn’t too surprised - one thing she is, is clear about how she feels about my driving ability. 20SS: IF YOU COULD GO BACK AGAIN WOULD YOU AND WOULD YOU CHANGE ANYTHING? AM: If I could go back again, I don’t know if I would or wouldn’t. I’m not terribly upset with how it ended. I did feel like I came out learning a lot and gaining a lot of experience and for that I am forever grateful. Although on the other hand winning the title of Canada’s worst driver wasn’t exactly a goal of mine… 20SS: WAS ANYTHING OVER EXAGGERATED OR FAKED ON THE SHOW? AM: No nothing is faked on the show but there is editing involved. 20SS: WHAT IS THE MOST VALUABLE THING YOU LEARNED FROM THE SHOW? AM: The most valuable thing that I’ve learnt from the show is patience... especially when driving! 20SS: WHAT IS YOUR MOST EMBARRASSING DRIVING EXPERIENCE? AM: My most embarrassing driving experience occurred sometime after Canada’s Worst Driver aired. I was trying to back into a parking spot in a busy parking lot during the holiday season and somehow I got wedged in between cars and a pillar. It was taking me forever with the ice and snow and my crappy tires kept screeching and spinning. People began to gather and stare, some even took pictures. I was making so much noise though so I guess who could blame them… 20SS: DO YOU THINK YOU THE SHOW IMPROVED YOUR SKILLS? AM: Yes I definitely think the show improved my skills. It was a lot of fun and an awesome learning experience. I met a lot of people and some great friends I still talk to today.

VITAMIN D Fall has arrived in Sudbury. This means it’s time to dig out those bulky sweaters and maybe even indulge in some of the pumpkin spice treats you’ve been craving for so long. With so much going on during this change of seasons, one important and often essential dietary change is over looked: vitamin D. Here is some of what you should know about vitamin D. 1. Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin which we either obtain from our diet or synthesize using energy from sun exposure. 2. In addition to being a nutrient, vitamin D is also considered a hormone as it plays the important role of blood calcium regulation. 3. If one has a vitamin D inadequacy, blood calcium levels will decrease causing the body to draw calcium from bones to maintain adequate blood calcium levels. 4. Prolonged vitamin D inadequacy can cause osteomalacia. The bones of individuals with osteomalacia become soft and more susceptible to fracture. Symptoms of osteomalacia include diffuse body pains and muscle weakness. 5. Very few foods naturally contain high levels of vitamin D. The average Canadian’s primary source of vitamin D is fortified milk. 6. Research suggests that populations located above 40 degrees north and below 40 degrees south cannot synthesize enough vitamin D from sun exposure during the winter months. During these months the sun does not rise high enough in the sky to provide the direct sunlight needed to synthesize vitamin D. 7. Vitamin D deficiency can lead to calcium deficiency as the small intestine can only absorb 10-15 percent of the calcium consumed when vitamin D levels are insufficient. 8. Recent research suggests that vitamin D may play a role in immune stimulation, regulation of blood pressure and regulation of insulin production. As such, adequate vitamin D intake may act as a protective agent against some cancers, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, cardiovascular disease and diabetes. 9. Statistics Canada estimates that 32% of the Canadian population has vitamin D insufficiency; including 10 percent of the population who are vitamin D deficient. With ever shortening daylight hours it is important that we include sources of vitamin D in our diets. This will not only ensure adequate nourishment throughout the winter months, but will also protect our health in the future.

ATHLETE OF THE MONTH 20SS: WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PART OF SOCCER? DM: Soccer is not an individual sport. I love the idea that I am able to work with my teammates in order to play the game. Through this game I got to meet many amazing people and a lot of these individuals are my very good friends today! Having to rely on and trust each other is very important, and knowing my teammates can do that with me being the last man back is a great feeling. My favourite part of soccer is the feeling you get after your team has achieved your goals and of course, coming out with the W. 20SS: HOW DO YOU BALANCE BEING A STUDENT AND A VARSITY ATHLETE? DM: At times, being a student athlete can be very hard to manage. Progressing in my core year, I have a better idea of time management. After long days of class and homework, it is a great feeling to go to practice where I get to see my teammates, and enjoy playing the game we love. 20SS: WHAT IS THE MOST CHALLENGING PART OF SOCCER? DM: Being a keeper, it can get extremely challenging when being on a varsity team, or any team in that matter. Because there is only one keeper in a game, it makes you strive to do your best in every practice in order to get a chance for the starting position, and to also challenge your teammates. Also being one of the oldest on

the team, I have to make sure that the young players are continuing to strive to get better each session and to have a role model to look up to. 20SS: WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE FUTURE? DM: Coming out of university, I want to travel and teach abroad for a few years before I return home. My plan is to teach in a primary/ intermediate classroom in Sault Ste. Marie

BLOG! * QUICK OR NEAT? If you’re currently making cute Thanksgiving decorations for your window, have Instagrammed a picture of the freshly fallen leaves in the last couple of days, or are at this very moment sipping on a pumpkin spice somethingor-other, the following information is probably for you. There comes a time in every girl’s October when she has to start thinking about some very serious autumn business. Midterms? Yes. Thanksgiving with her family? Sure. A new winter coat? Probably. But nothing compares to the ultimate decision: The Halloween Costume. Uh huh, I know, who cares, right? But the 56 picture’s you’re going to be tagged in come November 1st (or whenever your lazy friend/the club you were at gets around to posting them) aren’t going to disappear quite as quickly as your hangover or the kitty cat make-up on your face. The key is to pick a costume that you can look back at one day when you’re super old/get confused by technology and relish in the memories of that night sans regret. Girls generally have three routes to go when the big day comes around... 1) Slutty-We’ve all been there. These costumes are quick and dirty (all puns intended), don’t require a lot of effort, and have maximum effectiveness when thrust (more puns) into the right environment. Anyone can be a fire fighter, a nurse, or a bumblebee, but to be those things while wearing a double push up bra and thigh-high stockings is an achievement of a whole other capacity! Expect the bros to be a-prowlin’.

2) Funny/Clever-These are the costumes you might buy at a Halloween/ party store that come in a package and never fit quite right. They often include a play on words, a recognizable character, or a terrible sex joke. They’re easy to buy but can be much more satisfying when homemade! Great conversation starters, great last minute options, great to lend to a desperate friend come 2015. 3) Legit-A little more effort is required for these costumes, as we ladies might have to allow ourselves the rare honour of getting ready without the intention of looking as babely as we possibly can. A million kudos to the girls out there who dress up as a man/male character (non-ironically), anything dead, or manage to look demure in any way possible. These are the girls I admire at Halloween parties, because they probably had this planned out for weeks and I can’t see their boobies. Honourable mentions go out to the girls who gather a bunch of friends and pull off a group costume, to the girls who rock full cosplay, and to everyone in the world who has ever thrown a sheet over their head and called it a night. Whatever you decide to wear, make sure you’re comfortable in it, you’re stoked about it, and hopefully the candies that fell out of some poor kid’s pillowcase will be the only goodies the neighbourhood sees that night.
