THE SCOOP ON SUDBURY INDIE CINEMA If you’re a film buff you’ve likely been following the demise of Rainbow Cinema’s and the progress of the Sudbury Indie Cinema. We got in touch with Beth Mairs the pioneer behind the co-op project to get the details. 20SS: Tell us about what Sudbury Indie Cinema is all about? BM: The Sudbury Indie Cinema will be a year-round community cinema screening more independent, less commercial films and we will be located in Downtown Sudbury. I say “community cinema” because our business structure is a social enterprise and as a co-op we will be member-owned and driven. We expect to offer an alternative to the movies shown at Silver City-- ones they aren’t interested in but we are. But also we aim to be a resource to local filmmakers to get their stuff shown as well as be a resource to community organizations. 20SS: What is the benefit of having an indie cinema vs a typical movie theatre? BM: In Sudbury it will no longer be one or the other-- it will be both. We want to present films that make you think or feel deeply. It’s important to us that the film experiences we are providing ripple back in a positive fashion to other downtown establishments. We truly want to be a part of the positive change afoot downtown. It’s kinda cool that Sudbury has become the kind of city that could support an alternative movie house. I see that the energy of 20 Somethings is pushing this demand for alternatives.

20SS: Is Sudbury Indie Cinema close to becoming a reality? BM: We are aiming to be open this spring! We have a landlord, a space, Angel Investors, community support, the support of all level of government funders. We have local filmmakers and community organizations eager to screen at our location. We have high quality independent films being produced in Canada and abroad who would be delighted if Sudbury became a place to show their films to the public. 20SS: How can I help/show my support? BM: Well- this month Nov. 6-9th we are presenting BEST OF HOT DOCSSudbury-- a festival of top documentaries all Northern Ontario premieres and we are screening from 3 downtown venues. Please check out the line-up and come to a film or two. We also have young doc filmmakers coming to Sudbury for screenings of their films.

If you are feeling flush--- we currently have a Charter Membership campaign in high gear. You pay $40 for a LIFETIME CHARTER MEMBERSHIP and never pay again! Members not only have voting privileges- but you get a lifetime of movie price discounts and free events just for members.

What is Studio123? Studio123 is a wonder factory. We are a full scale creative agency that tackles everything from strategy and branding, to digital products like websites and apps to TV and radio ads.

STUDIO123

What ignited the spark in you to start a new business venture and open Studio123? We started Studio123 because we wanted to do better work for fewer clients. We have all been involved in other agencies and wanted to seize the opportunity to build on those past experiences. We gave ourselves the chance to plan things a little more carefully this time around and do things differently. So far it seems to be working and we’re having a lot of fun. How long have you guys been in this industry? We have a combined experience of about 20 years in the big leagues, but we’ve been at this for even longer. From making album covers and tour posters for our shitty bands in high school, building fancy Geocities and Angelfire websites in the early 2000s or shooting skateboard videos with Dad’s handycam (we still do that) — creativity has always been part of our DNA. What is the best part of running your own business? Making and playing by our own rules and doing work you feel passionate about. What else? Hmm, well it is nice to always have some Stack beer in the office fridge.

PAGE

What are some local brands that you have had the opportunity to collaborate with? We had a blast developing the brand for DeSimone Shoes and Spa. We’ve also been working with the Carrefour francophone brand for years now. That’s a beautiful simple brand with a family of sub-brands that we particularly love playing with. Sapporo Ichibang was tough to work on because it made us so damn hungry all the time, but we’re really excited about their grand reopening and finally being able to squash our cravings. Stack! Who doesn’t love beer? The original Stack Brewing brand and family of beers was created by our good friend and colleague Andrew Knapp. Andrew has since passed the torch to us and we are proud to work closely with Stack Brewing during their expansion from nano to micro brewery. Thoughts on opening a business in Sudbury/tips for some young entrepreneurs. Give it your all or don’t give it at all! If you know what you’re doing and are ahead of the curve, don’t let anyone tell you it’s impossible because they’re not there yet. If you don’t know what you’re doing, don’t fool yourself. Pick up a book or take a class. Future plans for Studio123? We’re hoping to add a 4-5-6 in the coming years and keep doing what we love.

Greatest accomplishment? Dangling out the window of our 2nd storey Elm Street office and hanging our beautiful flags. Don’t worry Rob was harnessed, and Nico was holding him up. He’s really strong (dude goes to the gym). It was safe. What can you guys be found doing in your spare time? Writing punk rock tunes, meditating, pretending to DJ, skateboarding and/or beautifying the city with public art. Best place to hang out in Sudbury? If we’re not at the studio, we’re here... Rob is most likely at the skatepark, Nico is probably renovating his new house, and, chances are, Christian is socializing at the Speakeasy, Fromagerie, or the Townehouse.

20SS: Where can we find your juice? JG: You can find Juice Me Healthy at Culgin’s Creative Cuisine located at 1375 Regent St. Sudbury, Ontario (705) 222-2433 www.culginscreativecuisine.com Call/E-mail to preorder your juice today! 20SS: Is juicing really as much work as it seems?

JG: Juicing is time consuming, but it isn’t hard at all! Wash, cut, juice, drink! And most juicers are made for easy cleaning! It may become expensive as you’re purchasing more vegetables and fruits aside from your normal grocery list.. but, your health is your greatest wealth — never forget that. 20SS: Tell us about your juice cleanse programs?

sudleb

Jeri-Ann Gelinas Juice Me Healthy

20SS: WHEN DID YOU FIRST START JUICING AND WHAT ARE SOME BENEFITS? JG: I started juicing a year and a half ago. In August 2011, I was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease and Colitis. After being on a few different kinds of medications that made me viscously sick - symptoms similar to chemo patients (weak, faint, nauseous, hair loss, constant vomiting, vertigo), and being told I would be on my death bed within two months if I would stop taking medication. I decided to take my health into my own hands and figure out how to heal my body without the harsh medications and side effects that came along with them. I started researching and watching documentaries on juicing, clean eating and how to heal Crohn’s Disease naturally. Trial and error. What made me feel sick or hurt my stomach, I eliminated from my diet or found an alternative to substitute that ingredient. Like, tapioca starch instead of corn starch; or coconut milk instead of cows milk. It took me a while to really get used to eating clean and juicing so often, but after a couple days, weeks... I really started to feel better. My body started to crave healthier foods and I had the energy to go to the gym again! I believe juicing has changed my life for the better. It is the quickest and easiest way to get all your daily nutrients. It has helped heal my auto immune disease, lose weight naturally, cleared my acne, gives me tremendous amounts of energy and makes me feel good inside and out. Juicing really is amazing! 20SS: WHICH ONE OF YOUR JUICES SOUNDS GOOD RIGHT ABOUT NOW? JG: One of my favourite juices would be “Debloater” it’s a delicious green juice:

- 1 handful of dandelion leaves

- 2 celery stalk

- 1/2 cucumber

- 2 green apples

- 1/2 lemon

- 1/4 ginger

yield: 2 juice

Clean all produce well, organic is best, chop into small pieces and juice!

JG: My Juice Cleanse programs range from 1 day to 30 days. Three days prior to your Juice Cleanse, you must prepare your body by eliminating certain foods and drinks, as you will only be consuming 6 juice per day. Doing this will help the eliminate food cravings you may get while cleansing. Juice cleansing does wonders as it is gives our body a break from digesting solid foods and cleanses our intestines at the same time. It takes about 15 minutes for all the delicious nutrients to go straight into our blood stream and throughout our entire body! 20SS: What impact do you want to leave the world ? JG: I want to help inspire and motivate others who are going through the same, or similar situations as I did. It’s hard being young, sick and not knowing what to do. It’s scary knowing you have an incurable disease. And if my experiences can help anyone fight for their health, fight for their life again.. well, that’s the best gift of all! We are all important and strong. “God put you on this earth because you are strong enough to live it.” You need to have a strong mindset, and believe in yourself! Once you have concurred that.. you become unstoppable. I believe we need doctors in this world, but I don’t believe we should poison our bodies with medications we don’t need, when we can just change our diet and lifestyle and fight disease naturally. We know ourselves better than anyone else in this world, we just have to start listening more carefully to our body. 20SS: Future plans for Juice Me Healthy? JG: I am currently working on a recipe book including healthy food alternatives along with all kinds of delicious juice recipes! I would really like to start bringing Juice Me Healthy into schools, to start teaching the younger generations about health and fitness. Unfortunately, there just isn’t enough knowledge in that area nowadays and our health is extremely important! To live a long, happy life.. you must live a strong, healthy life. 20SS: When you aren’t making juice for your clients, what are some things you enjoy doing? JG: When I’m not juicing for my clients, some things I enjoy doing would be going to the gym, playing volleyball, hanging out with friends and family, and doing research to better my knowledge for my business. 20SS: Where can we find more info? JG: You can find more information about Juice Me Healthy and a full juice menu at www.juicemehealthy.net Email me, I love to chat! juicemebacktohealth@gmail.com Like me on Facebook: facebook.com/juicemehealthy Follow me on Instagram: @juicemehealthyjuicery Follow my personal Instagram for my favourite recipes and fitness inspiration: @jjeriann Tag me in your healthy foods, juice and fitness photos: #juicemehealthy

M Bauckman

KFR Director

20SS: What inspired you to write KUNG FU ELLIOT?

20SS: Were you always interested in the Film Industry?

MB: I worked as an editor on my co-director’s first documentary, and afterwards Jaret and I decided that we wanted to direct a movie together in New Brunswick. Finding the subject of our movie, Elliot Scott, was a little serendipitous. When I was going to film school years ago in Toronto my dad kept sending me newspaper articles about Elliot and his first movie “They Killed My Cat” and it seemed really wild. Years later when Jaret and I came upon the trailer to Elliot’s movie, things didn’t really match up. In the newspaper articles Elliot was portrayed as an award winning filmmaker and martial artist but the quality of “They Killed My Cat” trailer didn’t really scream award winner, but Elliot was so passionate about his movies that we thought he would be an interesting guy to follow.

MB: Oh, I definitely had grand designs to become a filmmaker early on in life. I have been making movies since I was 13 years old. I remember that I would convince my teachers to let me shoot remakes instead of doing book reports. My remake of the Godfather sucked but I think my take on the Outsiders showed potential.

20SS: How long did it take you to complete the film? MB: We filmed for two and a half years, edited the film for about a year, and than after we won our first film festival, Slamdance, we trimmed the movie down even more. In total I suppose we’ve been working on the film for three and a half years. 20SS: Who are your biggest inspirations in the film industry? MB: I have always loved Werner Herzog as a documentary filmmaker, his movies are always so bizarre and his main interest seems to be with extreme people who are usually close to the edge of sanity. As far as narrative filmmakers, Paul Thomas Anderson can’t be beat. I believe he directed Boogie Nights when he was 27, which makes me very jealous. When I was in film school, I made a list of all of my favourite directors and calculated the average age of when they made their first feature film and think the average age was 32. So, I told myself, “I am going to make my first feature film before 30.” Paul Thomas Anderson brought the average down, so I guess I should thank him for for lighting a fire under my ass. 20SS: How did it feel to win best documentary at Fantastic Fest? MB: It was an incredible experience getting the Fantastic fest win. It is a very cool festival that really programs my type of movies. Fantastic Fest was our second Grand Jury Best Doc win and I was probably just as excited as our Slamdance win. If you work on something for three and a half years it is nice to have validation and it is such a great way to get the word out about our movie.

20SS: What are some of your hobbies? MB: I draw, I read a lot, and I’m obsessed with music. Unfortunately I haven’t had much time for hobbies outside of working on Kung Fu Elliot. My team consists of myself, my co director Jaret Belliveau and our producer Dave Eberts, that’s it; so we usually have a lot on our plate trying to get the movie out there. I am planning on getting a serious hobby in 2015 though. 20SS: What advice do you have for other aspiring Film Makers? MB: Early on, if you are aware that what you are producing isn’t great that is actually a good sign, it means that you have good taste and can recognize that you are failing at producing quality work. Don’t beat yourself up too much and keep working on getting to the point where you can’t wait to show other people your work. The only real thing that you need to be a filmmaker is grit ; the ability to keep moving forward when you have no money, no plan B, and no one is cheering you on. I think basically you have to be a little bit of a maniac 20SS: Do you have plans to make more movies? MB: Yes. After the life changing experience of making my first feature film and all of the hard work it took to get here I think I am hopeless now. It’s the film-making life for me; whatever that entails. 20SS: Can you describe your movie making experience in 5 words? MB: Next time, hire an editor. Ideally a nap should be either 10-20 minutes or 90 minutes. These time frames * coincide with lighter stages of sleep – making it easier to wake up.

YOUR NAPPING NEED-TO-KNOWS The busy lifestyle of a 20-something comes with certain prerogatives: staying up too late, trying new things, making mistakes and going out more than you probably should. One more thing you should add to your list? Napping! Here are some quick facts to help you reap the benefits of napping.

Napping for 30 minutes or more, but less than 90 minutes will likely result * in the phenomenon sleep inertia. Sleep inertia describes the tired, unrested and

groggy feeling you may have experienced upon waking from a nap. This is the result of being woken in a deeper stage of sleep.

An ideal time to nap is between 1:00pm and 4:00pm. Your body’s natural * circadian rhythm hits a “lull” in these hours; making it easier to nap. Napping

much past 4:00pm should be avoided as it may interfere with your ability to fall asleep at night.

Napping holds many potential cognitive benefits. One study by NASA found that * pilots who took a 26 minute in-flight nap saw a performance increase of 34% as

well as a 54% increase in overall alertness.

Research at Harvard Medical School found that napping, especially when * accompanied by dreaming, was an effective tool for improving memory and

learning ability.

Don’t feel guilty about taking a nap – countless research projects have shown that napping is beneficial to both cognitive functioning as well as general health. Next time you’re feeling tired take a nap and enjoy the many benefits it will offer!

SUDBURY STONES RUGBY CLUB This month we met with Greg Sullivan, 26 and Adam Slater, 29 of the Sudbury Stones Rugby club to learn a bit about the sport and Sudbury’s only Rugby club. 20SS: Tell me a little about the Sudbury Stones Rugby club. GS: It’s a local rugby organization. We’ve been around for a number of years now. Generally we get 15 to 30 guys depending on the year, and we play rugby as much as we can. The problem with being in Sudbury however, is that you don’t get many teams wanting to come all the way up here to play. 20SS: What is your favourite part of rugby? GS: I generally play in the pack so it’s not so much of a speed position, I’m in a lot more of the contact areas. I like the strategy of the game, and also getting to hit people. AS: I’m good on defense and tackling. Don’t give me the ball, just let me hit people. 20SS: What would you say is the most challenging part of rugby? GS: Definitely the fitness. A rugby game is 80 minutes and if you’re playing without subs it can get quite challenging. AS: Cardio, for sure. 20SS: If you could change any rule about rugby what would it be and why? GS: I don’t like the new cadence for scrums; it’s safer, but it really takes away from the game. It’s slower now and it makes it a little harder to have a nice scrum. AS: I would allow drinking on the sidelines – that way I wouldn’t have to wait until after the game! 20SS: What advice would you give to someone who is thinking about getting into rugby? GS: Go for it! It’s simple and it’s a cheap game to get into, unlike most contact sports – all you need is a pair of cleats. AS: Run a lot and come to our practices!

aunt zelda /Zelda Von Schnape

@AuntZeldasDirtyBingo

Salutations my sultry, sassy, insatiable sangrias!!! I have a wonderful letter from the grab bag of sexy notes and parables. I love that you are sending me your questions, stories, frustrations and fantasies to old Aunty Zelda at askauntzelda@gmail.com. Your letters warm my heart, harden my nipples and excite my mind. Please keep them coming and I will answer them as quickly as possible. I am gearing up for my new Dirty Bingo show in collaboration with Sudbury Burlesque, the Sudbury Comedy Scene and KC Events and Promotions so if I don’t answer you, I am either doing that or my pool boy Juan. This letter comes from Pinkybush68 (one away from a 69…she’ll get there) She writes… Dear Aunt Zelda! Thank you for the wonderful prizes that I received from you at the last dirty bingo. I have been putting them to good use as there are no men out there who deserve a night’s stay in my “Velvet Underground”. It is getting pretty frustrating out there Zelda. We are moving into winter soon and I need someone to help me get through those cold nights. I am a strong, independent woman with a great career and wonderful family and friends. I don’t like having hook ups or one night stands but I am not willing to compromise what I want out of a relationship. I love sex but there has to be a connection. What do I do? I started talking to my vibrator…his name is Bob. Help me Zelda!!! Awww…my pretty and primed Pinkybush. Darlin, the first thing I noticed about your note was your use of the word “need”. We NEED sleep, food and water. We WANT sex, golden toilets and cellulite free thighs. The only time I really NEED someone is when my heart gets a little too excited and my pills are out of reach or if I have fallen out of the sex swing and I need Juan to come pick me because I am too slippery…but I digress.

My sweet silly sea urchin...you sound wonderful. Do you think you are pretty awesome when you look in the mirror? When you awake, does the Devil go “Ah shit…better go back to bed…Pinkybush68 is up? When you are alone, do you constantly check your cell to see if anyone texted you or do you something awesome that makes YOU feel good? If you said no to all 3 of these questions, then hunny, send me your home address because you are going to need a bigger “care package” to get you through till then. If you go into Halloween needing a man, you are libel to fall into the 5 month dating dead zone. The trap starts if you hook up with someone on Halloween. You will probably be white girl wasted, see a cute firefighter or Ewok, take him home, play Trick or Treat with handcuffs and because winter is coming, you and the slutty pumpkin start dating. All of November is spent in anticipation of Christmas which means you can’t break up with your Halloween “candy” until after the holidays. Then New Year’s Eve rolls around and even though GI. Joe might be cheating on you, who wants to be alone on New Year’s? You tell yourself you can make through till Valentine’s Day because he might do something really sweet and well, its winter and it is cold outside. On Valentine’s Day, you receive a lug nut set and an extralarge Tapout shirt following a romantic dinner at Montana’s and you decide then and there to end it...on March 1st…cause…well it was sweet, not cheap, that he gave you HIS Tapout shirt for Valentine’s Day. Come March 2nd, after you broke up with whathisface, you vow that this summer will be the SUMMER OF PINKYBUSH68!!! You will love them and leave them. Kick it with your girls and really commit to Yoga this time. You are better than this hypothetical future. Don’t settle cause winter is going to be long and lonely. The dating trap exists because there are lot of people out there like you who all have to start learning how to be happy and satisfied on their own. I always say “Don’t make any decisions if you are horny and definitely don’t start dating someone if you are horny and lonely.” You got this Pinkybush68 and if you need to, I can loan you Juan sometime even if you don’ t have a pool.
