RRSP’S

REGISTERED RETIREMENT S AV I N G S P L A N S As an Investment Advisor, the most common questions that I get from young clients are about the different accounts available to them, and how each one can help them reach their goals. This month, I’ll talk about Registered Retirement Savings Plans (RRSP), what they do, and how they can affect you, both now, and in the future. The RRSP was introduced back in the late 50’s as a way to encourage Canadians to rely less on company or governmentbacked pension plans, and to take some control of their own retirement plans. Contrary to what most people believe, you don’t “buy RRSP’s”, you simply direct some of your savings to an RRSP account. Within this account, you’re eligible to hold a number of different investments including stocks, bonds, mutual funds, or GIC’s. As a way of encouraging Canadians to use these accounts, the government has effectively said that any dollars that you contribute to an RRSP should NOT be taxed as income. Essentially, if you’re putting the money away to be used in retirement, they are allowing you to wait until you actually use that money to pay any income tax owing on it. Because most of us have income tax deducted by our employer before we get paid, contributing to an RRSP can often result in us having paid more income tax than we should have, meaning CRA gives us a return (woohoo!!). In addition to getting a tax break in the year that we contribute (as if that isn’t enough!), an RRSP also shelters the growth of our investments from any tax that may accrue on them. Income paid on bonds or GIC’s, dividends paid from stocks, or profits that you’ve made from selling a stock at a higher price than what you paid for it are all taxable at different rates when in a regular investment account. By holding them inside of an RRSP we avoid any of these taxes and significantly increase the amount of savings that we can build inside of the plan. RRSP’s are, for the most part and excellent tool to plan for retirement, but be wary – once you turn 71, the government will begin to force you to make withdrawals and subsequently, pay the tax at whatever your marginal rate is at the time. For those with large pensions waiting for them in retirement this could create some un-wanted tax issues. As always, be sure to speak to your adviser or tax professional before deciding whether or not an RRSP is the right tool for you *National Bank Financial is an indirect wholly-owned subsidiary of National Bank of Canada. TREVOR FERA FIGHTING FIRES & GETTING FIT

A FIRE FIGHTER, COMPETITOR, WORLD CHAMPION AND NOW BUSINESS OWNER AND FITNESS COACH, IT’S ALL IN A DAYS WORK FOR SUDBURIAN, TREVOR FERA. 20SS CAUGHT UP WITH TREVOR TO TALK ABOUT WHAT KEEPS HIM HOT IN AND OUT OF THE WORKPLACE! 20SS: TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF. TF: I was raised in Coniston, played a lot of sports and dreamed of being a firefighter when I grew up. I never grew up but I did become a firefighter. My dream came true 11 years ago when the Brampton Fire Department hired me. Three years later I made the move back to my hometown, Sudbury. 20SS: WHAT IS FIT FIREFIGHTER? TF: Fitfirefighter.ca is an online personal fitness coaching service for Firefighters, Combat Challenge Competitors, Firefighter Fitness Testing Applicants and “Weekend Warriors.” It is for anyone wishing to take his or her fitness to a new level. We focus on functional fitness, building more powerful athletes. 20SS: WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO START THE PROGRAM? TF: My passion for teaching others was sparked in 2011 in Dubai, while conducting a month-long training camp for fire fighters from the Middle East and Europe. I loved sharing tips, tricks and hard won knowledge from my own personal experience and was looking for a vehicle to do this in my daily life. I hope to foster in other athletes the same appreciation and admiration for fitness and firefighting that I have. I love the sport, I love the profession and I love the people I meet. 20SS: WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS TO YOUR PROGRAM OVER AN AVERAGE GYM EXPERIENCE? TF: I have been involved in competitive sport all my life, most notably the Firefighter Combat Challenge, which I have been obsessed with for the last decade. Learning this sport has been a huge exciting experiment. I have gathered training techniques from many sources always testing them on myself, figuring out the exact training mix to surpass the competition. Our team of experienced professionals have your fitness as their common goal. We want to help you, the average athlete become elite. We will train you to utilize your body optimally, so you can push it to the limit. 20SS: HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN COMPETING? TF: As soon as I got hired with the Brampton Fire Department, 11 years ago. Since then I have had the honor of being five time World Champion in the Firefighter Combat Challenge.

20SS: WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE FOR SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO GET COMPETITION READY? TF: Take your time and have fun with the sport. Success doesn’t come over night. Your body and brain have to be trained to preform at its peak. Success isn’t measured by what place you finish, it’s measured by how hard you push yourself to accomplish your goal. 20SS: WHAT ARE SOME OF THE WAYS YOU LIKE TO STAY FIT? TF: I play hockey with my fellow firefighters, go on a couple of snowboarding trips a year and mountain bike whenever I get a chance. I spend a lot of time training with Steve O’Brian, owner of “Full Tilt Fitness” and fellow Combat Challenge competitor, I find it really helpful to train with someone who is working toward a common goal. My second home is T2 Training Systems with Troy Thompson at “The Gym”. I also really enjoy Olympic Weight Lifting with Alex Fera, who is a head coach at the “Sudbury Weight Lifting Club”. 20SS: WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO WHEN YOU AREN’T FIGHTING FIRES OR TRAINING? TF: On my off time I love to travel. I really enjoy seeing new places, meet different people and experience cultures around the world. I also have a passion for motorcycles. FOR SUMMER WARM UP

5 x20sec hills sprints: Sprint as hard as you can up the hill, rest on the walk back down on the hill. Repeat circuit for as many rounds as you can in 30 minutes. 1. STEP UP 10 Reps (each leg) – Alternate legs. Step up onto a bench, using only one leg to balance at the top. Slowly lower yourself to the ground, alternate feet and step up again. 2. CHIN UP

Get beach ready with Sudbury Firefighter, Trevor Fera!

10 Reps – Grab the bar with a shoulder-width, underhand grip. Hang at arm’s length and pull your shoulder blades down and back so that your shoulders are as far from your ears as possible. Pull your chest to the bar as you squeeze your shoulder blades together. Pause at the top of your chin up, then lower your body back down to the starting position. If you are unable to do a full chin up try jumping and catching the bar, use the momentum to bring your chest to the bar, then lower yourself down slowly. 3. WALKING LUNGE

1

2

10 Reps (each leg) – Step forward with one leg, lowering your hips until both knees are bent at about a 90-degree angle. Make sure your front knee is directly above your ankle, not pushed forward too far, and make sure your other knee doesn’t touch the floor. Keep the weight in your heels as you push back up to the starting position. Step your back foot forward to meet your front foot then alternate. 4. PUSH UP 10 Reps – Arms fully extended, bring your chest to the ground bending your elbows then back to your starting position. If you are unable to do a full push up, try doing them from your knees instead of your toes.

4 5. PLANK 20 Second Hold. Keep your torso straight and rigid and your body in a straight line from ears to toes with no sagging or bending. Squeeze your core!

3

5

*For all the exercise focus on keeping your core tight through out the movements.

20SS: TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF.

20SS: WHAT ARE THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES?

RM: I have been in business since 2010 starting out as a professional auctioneer then in 2012 opened Canadian Liquidators North. We originally started out purchasing contents from estates and estate sales. As we progressed we had an opportunity to purchase brand new bankruptcy merchandise, overstock from existing businesses and retail closeouts. We even took it a step further and began to liquidate liquidators with their overstock. From the merchandise we

RM: First and foremost sourcing out quality merchandise on a consistent basis. So far we have always seemed to find the right product mix...or maybe it just has a way of finding us. We tend to spend a little bit more on quality opposed to run of the mill lack lustre products. Most of our merchandise is name brand.

acquire we sell to the public at a fraction of the retail price and we also wholesale to other businesses and wholesalers. We are located at 22 brady st. in Sudbury (behind Kelly lake building Supplies.)

Being in the liquidation business also has other challenges in that it’s a 7 day a week business model even after the store is closed you are constantly sourcing out the next deal, on the phone after hours, sending emails and travelling a lot. It comes with the territory but I love It!! For people who enjoy their time off this is definitely not a business I recommend!

20SS: WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT HAVING YOUR OWN STORE? RM: The interaction I have with my customers. You really get to know your loyal customers and I have made many great friends as a result. Secondly, receiving all different kinds of merchandise all the time. It’s like Christmas every week. You never know what’s going to hit the liquidation market. 20SS: WHAT CAN WE FIND AT CANADIAN LIQUIDATORS NORTH? RM: As a rule the only thing we carry on a regular basis are televisions and mattresses. Everything else is random such as discount grocery and personal care items, tools, hardware, bedding, outdoor items, electronics and small appliances. In addition to selling new merchandise we also sell an eclectic mix of vintage items that we come across in our travels. It’s the weird and unusual pieces that a lot of people appreciate to look at while they come visit us!

20SS: WHAT TYPES OF PEOPLE COME INTO YOU STORE? RM: All walks of life. Bargain hunters. Antique collectors. Everyone. 20SS: WHAT IS THE MOST INTERESTING PIECE YOU HAVE EVER SOLD? RM: An 18th century Sterling Silver Tea Service from England. I stumbled over this at an estate sale when I was first started out. Not knowing a whole lot about it at the time I took a gamble and paid the asking price only because it caught my eye. After studying the hallmarks it turned out to be produced by a very prominent Silversmith from the 1700’s . It was later sold for several thousand dollars. 20SS: WHAT TELEVISION SHOW WOULD YOU SAY YOUR STORE IDENTIFIES WITH MOST: CANADIAN PICKERS, AUCTION KINGS, STORAGE WARS OR CANADIAN LIQUIDATORS? RM: I would have to say The Liquidator meets The Canadian Pickers . /CANLIQNORTH

20SS: WHO IS YOUR FAVOURITE NBA PLAYER? TC: Kobe Bryant. Watching him has taught me the importance of mental toughness and efficient movements. He is probably one of the smartest players to ever play the game. 20SS: WHAT IS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE GAME? TC: This year’s game against Wilfred Laurier University when I scored 40 points. It was the first exhibition game of our season and a confidence booster as it gave me a preview of what I could potentially do during the upcoming season. 20SS: FAVOURITE OPPONENT? TC: McMaster University. Their arrogant swagger always motivates me to play extra hard. 20SS: ANY PRE-GAME RITUALS OR SUPERSTITIONS? TC: I don’t believe in eating anywhere near game time, playing on an empty stomach forces you to play hungry. A post-game meal should be a reward after a hard –fought battle. 20SS: FAVOURITE QUOTE OR BEST ADVICE FROM YOUR COACH? TC: “It’s up to you” – Shawn Swords (Coach) I’m not sure if he realizes how much he says this but he pretty much means that anything you want in life is up to you. He does not force any of his players to do anything, because he believes that desire comes from within. He will do anything in the world to help any of his players achieve their goals, but he believes that “it’s up to you”. There isn’t a day that I don’t think of this quote. 20SS: SOME ACCOMPLISHMENTS YOU ARE MOST PROUD OF? TC: Becoming a CIS (Canadian Interuniversity Sport) Academic AllCanadian and an OUA (Ontario University Athletics) All-star. I wanted to set and example and a standard for my teammates. I want Laurentian basketball players to be known as hard workers on and off the basketball court. 20SS: WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE PLANS? DO YOU HAVE DREAMS TO PLAY PROFESSIONAL BASKETBALL? TC: As it stands I do not have any dreams to play professionally. My passion lays in urban planning. I have a passion for urban areas and designing communities. Next year I will be starting a Master’s degree in urban planning. @cartertychon @tychoncarter

DJ Jack3d – Neil Deschamps Resident DJ The Grand Nightclub and Fuse Nightclub

20SS: WHEN DID YOU FIRST START DJING?

20SS: BIGGEST DJ YOU HAVE EVER PLAYED WITH?

ND: About 10 years ago.

ND: The biggest DJ I have ever had the opportunity to play with was Grandtheft. I was lucky enough that KC Events and Promotions gave me an opening slot at the show this past February and it was truly an honour.

20SS: WHAT OR WHO WERE YOUR EARLY INFLUENCES AND PASSIONS? ND: I think the first passion was always the love of music. I could never play an instrument but I still loved being able to bring music to friends, family and audiences. My first influence in DJing was Toronto based Dj Deko-ze. He was one of the first people I connected with in terms of music and performance. You can see a lot of my style comes from the way he preforms.

20SS: HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE PARTY SCENE IN SUDBURY? ND: Evolving and Exciting! So much has happened in the past year and all of it is positive for Sudbury and the party scene. We are bringing the clubs in to the next era of partying to keep up with the demand we get from people who frequent Toronto or Montreal. Stay tuned for what’s next!!! 20SS: WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE FOR PEOPLE JUST STARTING OUT?

20SS: WHERE DID THE NAME JACK3D COME FROM? ND: Everyone thinks it relates to having muscles but the name was inspired by the song Jack Your Body by Steve “Silk” Hurley. To me “Jacking your body” is letting go of all that is going on in your life and becoming one with the music and dancing. It’s how I feel behind the decks. I become one with the crowd and one with the music. That led to the birth of Jack3d. 20SS: WHERE DO YOU CURRENTLY HOLD RESIDENCIES? ND: The Grand Nightclub on both Thursday and Saturday Nights and Fuse Nightclub on Friday Nights. 20SS: FUNNIEST THING THAT YOU HAVE SEEN WHILE WORKING? ND: A girl trying to “drop it low” in the cage but getting her dress caught on one of the bars as she did right as the lights lit up the dance floor giving the crowd a free show. I feel bad for the girl but the timing was priceless.

1. Learn your craft. Don’t rely on just your equipment or your computer. Learn to play on everything. 2. Be respectful of the DJs that come before you. You may be the best DJ to your friends but there are tonnes of people who have paid their dues ahead of you. 3. Come out and promote the scene. I see new DJs all the time begging for gigs or trash talking on SRC (Sudbury Rave Community) but they are never out at the clubs. Don’t expect to play if you can’t support your peers. 4. Lastly and most importantly APPROACH EXISTING RESIDENTS. We have residencies at clubs for a reason and I know I’m always down to talk music with a new DJ and even get them an opening gig!
