Dawn Cattapan

Executive Director | the Sudbury Symphony Orchestra

WHAT IS YOUR ROLE AT THE SYMPHONY? I’ve been the Executive Director of the Sudbury Symphony since October 2012. I was born and raised in Sudbury, but moved to Toronto for university about 10 years ago. I’ve always taken music and dance lessons, but have horrible stage fright- so when I went to university, I studied arts management (a fancy way of saying the business side of charities and not-for-profits) and musicology (music history). The Sudbury Symphony has been a great way to combine the two, although I’m still fairly new to the “symphony” world- I didn’t attend my first symphony concert until I was 18. HOW HAS THE SYMPHONY GROWN IN RECENT YEARS? We’ve really tried to get out into the community and be a more active part of the community. As the city’s only orchestra, I think we have a responsibility to try to bring music to as many people as we can. We’ve done this through “non-traditional” concert events - like a theme night involving both a film and concert at College Boreal, or a concert that combines conversation, music, wine and cheese at the Fromagerie. But we’ve also reached out into our community and given free performances at schools and provided free tickets to organizations that work with some of the neediest people in our community. It’s made people curious and wanting to check us out. Our single ticket sales have risen every year I’ve been here and our subscriptions are up this year, too. TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR UPCOMING VALENTINES CONCERT FRENCH ROMANCE? When we started programming this concert, we thought that using the City of l’amour for inspiration would be a lot of fun and what’s more romantic than Valentine’s Day? So we picked some composers that had interesting stories to tell, all with a different opinion and different experiences of love. There will be some dances from a beautiful ballet called Coppélia, who is infatuated with a life-sized doll he created. He tries to bring her to life, but he’s thwarted by someone else who is in love with the doll and has simultaneously managed to forsake his soulmate at the same time. We’re also performing one of my favourite pieces, Debussy’s Prelude a l’apres-midi d’un faune, which is this very sensuous piece about a half-man, half-goat creature daydreaming about his “escapades” with nymphs. We’ll capture passion in Stravinsky’s “The Firebird” which is all about a Prince and how far he’ll go to win the heart of a beautiful princess.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVOURITE PERFORMANCE PUT ON BY THE SYMPHONY WHILE YOU’VE WORKED THERE? Every performance is my favourite, because I get to throw my heart and soul into making each one happen, so as cheesy as it sounds, every concert has a special memory for me. One of my favourite memories, though, was at a rehearsal in the 13-14 season, and the Orchestra was practicing this stunning, challenging piece called “Die Moldau,” there was no one else in the audience, so it was like I was getting my own private concert. That was pretty cool.

Music W W W.20SOM E T H I N GSU D B U RY.C A

HOW DO YOU RECRUIT YOUR MUSICIANS? ANY ADVICE FOR PEOPLE LOOKING TO GET INVOLVED? A lot of people don’t realize that a huge number of our musicians are actually volunteers who love performing. Some of them are music teachers or music students, but a lot of them work in other professions, from the mines to offices to owning their own businesses. Everyone is at a different skill level, but we work together to produce great music and people perform the concerts that they’re comfortable and able to play. For anyone wanting to get involved, the only advice I can give is to give us a call, talk to one of our musicians, or just come out to a rehearsal and see what you can do. WE ARE REALLY EXCITED TO HEAR ABOUT YOUR AMPED UP PROGRAM! HAVE YOU SEEN A LOT OF 20 SOMETHINGS TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THIS AWESOME DEAL? We totally get that young people are starting out their life and it’s expensive, whether that’s making their way through school, paying off debt, or saving up for a house so we wanted to find a way to still make our concerts affordable. We introduced the Amped Up program and we love that so many people have taken advantage of it, hundreds in the past year. I once worked in this huge performance hall that made their discount tickets all the seats with horrible sight lines; but our Amped Up Program is “best available”, so even if you’re paying $13, you can still get the best seats in the house.

WHAT CAN WE EXPECT TO SEE FROM THE SYMPHONY IN 2015? Next season is the start of a new era for the Sudbury Symphony. We’re currently looking for a new Music Director, and we’ve invited 4 young, bold and vibrant up-and-coming Canadian composers to audition for the role. They’ll each come to Sudbury for a week and in that week, will participate in education events, outreach and concert activities. Everyone involved will get to vote and at the end, we’ll have one winner, chosen by the entire community. THOUGHTS ON SUDBURY’S ARTS & CULTURE SCENE? IS THERE ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT? WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE IN 2015? Sudbury’s Arts and Culture scene has grown tenfold since I left in 2003. I think there’s always room for improvement, but I hope we’re able to continue the momentum that seems to have built up in the past several years, as well as keep working together. When the arts community collaborate, really cool things happen, from spontaneous dance parties to big productions, like last month when the SSO and YES Theatre coproduced Les Miserables In Concert. I hope more organizations come together and work together.

FAVOURITE PART OF WHAT YOU DO

CRAZIEST THING THAT’S EVER HAPPENED TO YOU WHILE AT WORK

I love the social aspect of my job. Interacting with people has always been a passion of mine. I took sociology in university and although I never ended up needing it, it has definitely propelled me through the service industry in a positive light.

During the Christmas parade last year, I was dressed up as our Wacky Wings mascot, ‘Wally’. As I was walking down the street I tripped over my excessively large chicken foot and Wally’s head fell off. Needless to say, the look on the child’s face standing directly in front of me was priceless.

UPCOMING EVENTS AT YOUR WORK

WHEN YOU AREN’T WORKING WHAT CAN YOU BE FOUND DOING

At Wacky Wings, we’re currently in the midst of a few promotional giveaways with Labatt including NFL Jerseys and an upcoming NHL promotion as well.

I love taking my sisters dog on hikes around Laurentian. I also love cooking and music. BEST TIP YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED

SOMETHING INTERESTING PEOPLE DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOU I love food! Cooking and eating great food has to be one of my favourite pastimes. I love learning new cooking techniques and experimenting with different flavours. I think the crew at Wacky Wings can attest to the fact that I’m constantly on the grind to figure out a new and innovative wing flavour whenever I get the chance. You’re parents were wrong, it’s ok to play with your food.

10

I’ve received some pretty great tips in my career and I’m thankful for that. Not my biggest tip, but definitely my most memorable was from a man who used to come with his hockey team to Wacky Wings every Tuesday after their game; I absolutely loved serving them. Anyways, on his last visit before the season was over, he tipped me $100 dollars and all he had purchased was a pop. I couldn’t believe it. I never expect those things to happen so it was a really cool experience and it’s extremely rewarding to know that someone feels you’re that deserving of their time and money.

Danny Gibson owner | Inkster

WHAT IS INKSTER?

WHO WOULD BENEFIT THE MOST FROM USING INKSTER?

Inkster is the world’s first social media platform that encompasses the entire world of art. Artists from all walks of life can use it - painters, fashion designers, musicians, graphic designers and more. Not only can artists build beautiful online portfolios and galleries, but they can also sell their work directly from their profiles. Best of all Inkster’s free to sign up and only 10% is taken from every successful transaction.

Any artist looking to improve the manageability of their career and consolidate their work into one trusted platform. Many artists today are multimedia artists. It’s very common to meet people that do photography, graphic design and play music all at the same time. These artists would have to direct you to more than four sites just to view all their work and learn about themselves as an artist. This doesn’t even guarantee you’ll be able to buy their music or artwork either. Inkster takes care of all that.

HOW DID THE IDEA FOR INKSTER COME ABOUT? The idea for Inkster came to me sitting at my desk working on a social media concept. It was designed to be an app for phones at first and supposed to be for tattoos. I brought the idea to my friend Rob Anderson and we started to expand on the concept more. We decided we could do this for all genres of art and turn Inkster into a full social media platform that supports e-Commerce. Being artists ourselves, we were able to address many of the issues artists face managing a successful independent career and turn Inkster’s concept into something that is really needed in today’s world.

DO YOU HAVE ANY UPCOMING CONTEST OR SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS?

HOW DOES INKSTER DIFFER FROM OTHER SOCIAL MEDIA COMPETITORS?

In the meantime we will be working hard on preparing for our launch party in March of 2015 at the Virgin Mobile MOD Club in Toronto. It’s lining up to be an incredible event!

Inkster is much more than a social media site. It’s the first platform to host all forms of art and sell it, all in one beautiful marketplace. There are many websites that host art but most people don’t even know about them. What Inkster aims to do is to be a brand that not only artists but art lovers also, know and recognize. Most platforms that exist today either charge exorbitant amounts of money in subscriptions or fees or only cater to certain styles of art. Inkster looks to bridge all these gaps and create one place that everyone can use.

16

We just finished our Kickstarter campaign in December and we’re now in the coding phase of Inkster.com. We estimate this will take a few months until we are ready for the beta testing phase and start welcoming users. We’ve commenced another round of funding, where we are raising operating capital from private investors and this will continue for the duration of the coding phase. This round of investing is open to anyone and we’re happy to meet with anyone that’s interested in knowing more.

Matthew Guthrie

owner | guthrie artist management photo by: Peller Media

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN THE INDUSTRY? I have been working in the entertainment industry for the past five years. WHAT INFLUENCED YOU TO OPEN A TALENT AGENCY? I have always been interested in the behind-the-scene operations of film and was fortunate enough to secure a position at The Characters Talent Agency in Toronto during my last year of high school. Working at one of Canada’s most prominent talent agencies taught me how to adapt to this fast paced industry and how to spot marketable talent. I later worked at Newton Landry Management as a junior agent. I helped oversee both the voice and on-camera department. I’ve had the opportunity to build relationships with casting directors in Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, New York and Los Angeles. Guthrie Artist Management was a natural extension of my interest in building a solid talent base. WHAT DOES YOUR AGENCY OFFER TO TALENT? My role as a talent agent is to be the middle-man between the talent and casting/producers. My primary focus is to maintain a strong clientele both here in Northern Ontario and in Toronto. Northern Ontario is the place to be for actors looking to build a solid foundation for their career. Fantastic opportunities are presenting themselves a lot more here in the North. My job is to ensure that my clients are taken care of so that they can focus on their craft. I deal with the auditions, contracts, scheduling, payments and residuals. WHO HAVE YOU HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO WORK WITH? During my time with The Characters Talent Agency, I had the opportunity to work with the agents of Jason Priestly, Donald Sutherland, A.J. Cook, Stephen McHattie, Mia Kirshner and others.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR READERS TRYING TO PURSUE A CAREER IN THE INDUSTRY? For actors looking to break into the business, it is imperative that you do your research and have an understanding of what is expected of a professional actor. It is a job that requires dedication, talent and professionalism. I have met with a number of new actors who think they are ready to move to Los Angeles and book a series lead without any training and experience. Talent and appearance will only get you so far. Actors need to understand that there is no point of arrival when it come to training. You also have to do your research and avoid the many scams that are awaiting new actors. You should never have to pay upfront for a talent agent. WHAT IS THE IMPORTANCE OF A GOOD HEAD SHOT TO AN AGENT? After working in the industry and working with a number of casting directors, I can tell you that your headshot and demo reel are the most important marketing tools you can have when you are breaking into the business. The headshot and demo reel are one of the first things casting directors, agents, producers and directors see and if they don’t look professional, we won’t take you seriously. Actors in Northern Ontario wonder why they aren’t booking the larger roles. Your headshot and demo reel assists in getting you through the casting door and if not done well, speaks volumes to your professionalism. E-CIGARETTES

THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY E-CIGARETTES HAVE GAINED MUCH ATTENTION LATELY FROM PUBLIC

THE GOOD

HEALTH OFFICIALS, HEATH CARE PROVIDERS AND CONSUMERS ALIKE.

Many are excited at the possibility of e-cigarettes to be used as aids in smoking cessation. This is based on the assumption that e-cigarette vapor is much less harmful than cigarette smoke, as it does not contain many of the known carcinogens in cigarette smoke. A new idea of “tobacco harm reduction” has been proposed, wherein smokers may choose to forgo conventional cigarettes for the use of e-cigarettes. Many argue that e-cigarettes present a very small fraction of the risk compared to what conventional cigarettes would. Unfortunately, to date there is not sufficient long-term research to support this argument. However, evidence currently available was enough to encourage an international team of scientists to write an open letter to the World Health Organization’s Director General Margaret Chan. In their letter they state “[e-cigarettes] could be among the most significant health innovations of the 21st century – perhaps saving hundreds of millions of lives.”

THE APPEAL FOR E-CIGARETTES IS CENTERED ON THE PROPOSED MINIMAL HEALTH RISKS THEY PRESENT WHEN COMPARED WITH CONVENTIONAL

CIGARETTES.

E-CIGARETTES

ARE

ESSENTIALLY

BATTERY POWERED VAPORIZERS WHICH VAPORIZE A LIQUID MIXTURE OF

NICOTINE,

FLAVOURINGS

AND

OTHER

CHEMICALS.

RECENT

CONTROVERSY HAS BEEN SPARKED SURROUNDING THEIR REGULATION, POPULARITY AND USE AMONG YOUTH.

THE BAD Tobacco harm reduction may be a promising avenue for e-cigarette use; however the e-cigarette industry also has a dark and unregulated side. In Ontario there are currently no nicotine-containing e-cigarettes that are legally approved for sale – meaning that this industry is as of yet, completely unregulated. There are no quality control measures guiding the production of e-cigarette products. There is no guarantee of product safety and no production standards – so consumers of these products may not be getting the product they think they are. Perhaps even more worrying is the fact that sales of e-cigarettes are also unregulated – which is increasing the popularity of e-cigarettes with youth. THE UGLY In Canada the sale of all tobacco products to youth is strictly banned. However, e-cigarette products are readily available to youth. Research by the Canadian Cancer Society in Quebec found that one third of secondary school students reported having used e-cigarettes. The same study also found that nine percent of grade six students had tried e-cigarettes. Evidently, e-cigarette companies have been successful in marketing their colourful and candy sweet flavours to youth. Also of concern is the possibility that e-cigarettes may act as a gateway to introduce youth to cigarette smoking. E-cigarettes have become a trendy new spin on cigarettes. Public health officials worry that this emerging trend is beginning to reverse years of public health campaigns that were aimed at denormalizing cigarette use. There is certainly potential for the use of e-cigarettes as means of tobacco harm reduction. However, inhaling any chemical poses a health risk. While e-cigarettes may present a lower physical risk than conventional cigarettes there is still a risk involved in their use – a risk that as of yet has not been researched sufficiently. Perhaps the most dangerous aspect of e-cigarettes is the social risk they present. Currently their increasing use, especially among youth is concerning as it has potential to create an entirely new generation of “cigarette users” – something that fifty years of public health campaigns have worked to prevent.

Stuart Munro, 25

World Cl ass Snowboarder Head Instructor | Adanac Ski Hill

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN SNOWBOARDING AND WHAT GOT YOU INTO IT? I have been snowboarding for 15 years and teaching for 9. I was lucky enough to start skiing at a young age so I was always on the mountains where I would see people on snowboards. I knew I always wanted to try snowboarding; it was the cool thing to do. One year for Christmas after a long time begging, my parents got me a snowboard. I was pretty stoked. I learned to Snowboard at Panorama in British Columbia and never went back to skiing. WHERE AROUND THE WORLD HAVE YOU SNOWBOARDED? WHAT’S YOUR TOP 3? I have had the opportunity to snowboard all over the world. I have been to many of the top resorts in Canada and Europe so it’s really hard for me to pick a top 3. I love riding in Switzerland for the incredible views, Norway for the crazy parks, France for the deep powder and Italy for the amazing food and long runs. Canada also has some world class resorts. Revelstoke in Bristish Columbia has incredible powder and endless tree runs. Whistler has the best park in Canada and some of the wildest nightlife. Even Quebec has some great resorts such as Mount Tremblant and Mount St. Anne that give you the feeling that you’re in the mountains. My top 3 would have to be Zermatt in Switzerland, Revelstoke in British Columbia and Laax in Switzerland. PARK OR POWDER? WHY? Growing up in Ontario I spent almost all my time in the park. Riding competitions and filming with friends in the park was always a blast. Although I still ride a lot of park these days I would have to say Powder is my favorite. Earning your turns by hiking or snowmobiling into untouched spots in British Columbia or the Alps is always a breathtaking experience. Nothing beats the feeling of riding my own untouched spot in bottomless powder up in the mountains where you are at the mercy of Mother Nature. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE BOARD TO RIDE? I ride a Burton custom flying V and a process flying V. These boards have amazing performance and are good for park and powder. I am also a fan of Step Child, Rome and Prior Snowboards. I just have a good arrangement with Burton Snowboards at this time.

WHAT IS THE BEST PART ABOUT TEACHING SNOWBOARDING? The best part of teaching snowboarding is watching people progress from a beginner all the way up to an advanced rider. It’s cool to see people you have taught when they were kids who are now grown up and still shredding or even instructing. I have also taught people who have grown up and now compete in world-class competitions. It’s cool to see people you know competing on TV. I have taught people of all ages and abilities. I encourage anyone and everyone to get out and take a lesson if they have the opportunity. WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST ACCOMPLISHMENT IN SNOWBOARDING? My proudest accomplishment in Snowboarding is when I passed my level 3 snowboard instructor certification with the Canadian Association of Snowboard Instructors. This allowed me to become an evaluator in charge of certifying snowboard instructors at resorts all over the place. I love getting paid to snowboard on a daily basis. WHO IS YOUR FAVOURITE PROFESSIONAL SNOWBOARDER? JP Walker was my idol growing up. I watched all of his video parts and based a lot of my style off of his. JP walker is still one of my favorites however these days Mark McMorris and the local North Bay boys; Max Eberhardt and Tyler Nicholson are the guys I watch. It’s nice to see Canadians at the top of the snowboard world. WHAT’S THE MOST CHALLENGING PART OF SNOWBOARDING? The hardest part of snowboarding is getting out of your comfort zone to be able to progress. Snowboarding is a sport driven by goals and getting over your fears. When you learn a new trick or ride a line you have been eyeing out for a while it’s an incredible feeling. You will never progress to the next level in riding without getting out of your comfort zone. WHERE CAN WE FIND YOU ONLINE? @stubird121 /Adanac-Ski-Hill-SudburyON

Lookout – The app that sends you a picture of the person who stole your phone! Now, selfies aren’t just for teenagers and Instagram models. San Francisco based company, Lookout, has created an app that unknowingly snaps pictures or ‘thefties’ of the thief who took your smart phone. Your front facing phone cam can help you fight crime!

• Lookout sends the phone owner an email with a photo of the thief and a map of the device’s location within minutes, to give the victim the best chance of finding their phone. • Actions that trigger an alert and take a ‘theftie’ include: entering an incorrect password, removing a SIM card, enabling airplane mode, turning the phone off and removing the Lookout App. • Available for Android and iPhone. • The premium version of Lookout costs $3 a month or $30 for the year and includes features such as backing up data, virus protection and finding lost phones. Some features may not be available on all devices.
