Big projects. Huge outcomes.

The curtains rose on the 8 November for our club’s signature community project – A Nation in Concert at Marina Bay Sands theatre. Over 2500 people were touched by this musical. The matinee show had VIP guests: Dr Lee Boon Yang, Chairman SPH, Mr Alan Chan, CEO of SPH, Mr Hsieh Fu Hua, President, National Council of Social Service and Mr Philip Tan, Vice President of NCSS and Chairman of Community Chest were at the event to receive a $500k cheque from SPH for 50 beneficiaries which included the 4 beneficiaries on stage: Handicaps Welfare Association, Singapore Association for the Deaf, Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped and Association of Persons with Special Needs.

After both shows, cash donations amounting to $8742.06 was received at MBS. Mailed in donations continue to comes in to ANIC after the show. We should be channeling around $120k to the four beneficiaries which would translate to a $240k impact. This is thanks to the government care and share movement for dollar to dollar matching this year for our four beneficiaries.

CLUB NewSLETTER

We completed 3 water projects this year. One at Chiang Rai and another two in Laos. The projects were funded from contributions by members and friends from the Rotary Rocks CD album 'Fill this world with Light' with $15,850 as at end October and an additional contribution of $5k in November by PP Lim Eng Hai for the water project in Chiang Rai. This had boosted our club's 'Fill this world with Light' water project fund to over $20k. There are over 2000 students in Sahasartsuka School in Chiang Rai and the water system the club installed benefited the hill tribes hostel that is located within this school. Crossing into Laos, our Ton Peung water project benefited over 600 students who travels from nearby villages to attend this school. The water project was completed in Phang Thong School in Laos some 3 hours of bumpy car ride from ChiangRai. We had recced this site but did not go back in November due to time constraints. The international service team was led by PP Choe Peng Sum and members had a great time connecting with our sister club from Chiang Rai North as well.

We supported a Musical therapy programme for differently abled children in a special school in Chiang Rai. This music therapy programme equipped some 40 teachers care givers with skills that will further music as a therapy for the needy students in this school. Music therapy provides avenues for communication that can be helpful to those who find it difficult to express themselves in words. Through musical involvement students abilities are transferred to other areas of their lives that enhance their relationship with their loves ones. Besides the training programme for the caregivers, RC Pandan Valley had sponsored additional musical instruments for the school as part of this programme.

lunch talks. A new club tee. Rotary recognition. Rotaract.

We had 2 lunch speakers in November. Kannan Chandran, Publisher of STORM Studio shared with us his journey in the media industry and how he found a niche for his business. Epi Nekay, Founder of CrowdsourcingWeek shared with us the power of crowd that is turning social activities into social productivity. Our new club tees in pandan green was also distributed over 2 lunches. It certainly came in useful for that smart uniform look as we embarked on our international service projects in November.

AG Khush also joined us at lunch to hand out to IPP Mohan the Rotary EREY recognition for our club in RY13/14.

Our Rotaract club from SUTD, installed their new board , presided by new President Aditya Narayan Singh. The new exco were enthused to take the club forward into the new year with fresh project ideas. We encouraged the outgoing board to stay connected with our club and to join us for club lunches.

SUTD Rotaract club will be joining us at the club’s AGM, Club Assembly and Christmas Party. They are planning to entertain us as well on that night.

CLUB NewSLETTER

When the opportunity for RI President to come to Singapore arose in July, this was tagged with a wish for a Rotary Day event that he could officiate. The eye screening idea was mooted for Rotary District 3310 to organize with funding on eye care by Foundation of Rotary Clubs Singapore and for all clubs to jointly participate in. This challenge was undertaken by President Jona Pang of RC Tanjong Pagar who led a team of joint presidents from other clubs to organize this project.

Some 200 aged and needy residents at the South West District of Singapore. The residents were ferried by buses to NUH eye screening centre where Rotarians and Rotaractors gathered to help the residents move through the different eye screening stations from stations for Vision Acuity, Autorefractor, Air Puff and a doctor review at the National University of Singapore Eye centre located at the NUH Medical Centre.
