About Rotary Who Are We? Rotary is a global network of 1.4 million neighbors, friends, leaders, and problem-solvers who see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change – across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves.

Solving real problems takes real commitment and vision. For more than 110 years, Rotary's people of action have used their passion, energy, and intelligence to take action on sustainable projects. From literacy and peace to water and health, we are always working to better our world, and we stay committed to the end.

What we do Rotary is dedicated to causes that build international relationships, improve lives, and create a better world to support our peace efforts and end polio forever. Rotary has been working to eradicate polio for over 35 years, and our goal of ridding the earth of this disease is in sight. We started in 1979 with vaccinations for 6 million children in the Philippines.

Today, Afghanistan and Pakistan are the only countries where polio remains endemic: Rotary members believe that we have a shared responsibility to take action on our world’s most persistent issues. Our areas of focus are as follow: Promote peace Fight disease Provide clean water, sanitation, and hygiene Save mothers and children Support education Grow local economies Protect the environment Our Mission We provide service to others, promote integrity, and advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through our fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders.

Our Guiding Principles These principles have been developed over the years to provide Rotarians with a strong, common purpose and direction. They serve as a foundation for our relationships with each other and the action we take in the world.

Object of Rotary The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster: FIRST: The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service; SECOND: High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society; THIRD: The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business, and community life; FOURTH: The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

The Four-Way Test The Four-Way Test is a nonpartisan and nonsectarian ethical guide for Rotarians to use for their personal and professional relationships. The test has been translated into more than 100 languages, and Rotarians recite it at club meetings: Of the things we think, say or do 1. Is it the TRUTH? 2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?

3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? 4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

Our Guide to Daily Living Before doing the things, we want to do, consider first, the precept of the guide. Ask ourselves 4 questions and act upon them: First : Have I spent some time in self-examination?

Second : Have I spent quality time with my family?

Third : Have I given my best to my work?

Fourth : Have I given some time to someone near and far?

The first question prompts us to evaluate ourselves and our ability to serve.

Our Vision

The second question reinforces our commitment to the family – our “Intimate Community of Life and Love”.

Together, we see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change — across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves

The third person requests us to commit ourselves to work excellence and the practice of high ethical standards.

Through the Years: The Rotary Club of Pandan Valley.

Rotary Club Of Pandan Valley: The First Year Charter President, Michael W. Haines and 26 other gentlemen, formed the Rotary Club of Pandan Valley (Rotary district 330) almost forty years ago under the sponsorship of The Rotary Club of Jurong Town. The club was incubated under District Governor Dr. Philbert S.S.Chin and was admitted into Rotary International on 23rd August 1983 by then R.I. President, William L Skelton.

Dr. Philbert S.S.Chin became the first Honorary Member and two Charter members are still members of the Club. They are PP Dr Tony Tng and PP Lim Soon Hock.

The 1st Decade (RY: 1983/84 – 1992/93).

To cement relationships with the other Rotary clubs in Singapore during the early formative years and to provide opportunities for wider service and involvement, Pandan Valley took part in joint-projects.

Pandan Valley also initiated a tree planting campaign (with participation from other Singapore clubs) to observe Earth Day in 1991. This has since been replicated by other clubs as part of the Environmental Awareness Campaign over the years.

The first few presidents did a lot to establish the reputation of Pandan A Congratulation Dinner was initiatValley. Mike Haines and Bek Kheng ed for Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong Huat (dec.) deserved special mention in 1991 when he succeeded Mr Lee in this respect. Kenneth Chew went on to become District Governor Kuan Yew as Prime Minister. The dinner was well supported by all the (Rotary District 3310) in RY 2000-2001! clubs in Singapore. A Paul Harris Fellow recognition was conferred on Expatriates made up about 45% of Mr Goh Chok Tong at this Dinner. A members in Pandan Valley during rapport was established between this time. There was a rich and Rotary and the Singapore Governstimulating variety of social, cultural, ment and since then, Rotary clubs in welfare & recreational projects.

Lilley (Club Comedian). In the early 1990’s, with changing business environment, the expatriate component of our membership declined to about 20%.

The 2nd Decade (RY: 1993/94 – 2002/03) The management style during this period is one of quiet consolidation.

The club continued to have able leaders, some truly outstanding.

Deserving of special mention was the inspirational leadership of Tony Tng, Peter Yap and Eric Lee. Membership numbers during the period ranged from 32 to 40, with a mean of 35 members. The admission of female members into the Club during this period contributed much to the vitality & imaginative aspects of Pandan Valley’s projects & programs.

During the period the Club was instrumental in the formation of a Rotaract Club (Rotaract Club of Pandan Valley), an Interact Club {Tanglin Secondary School) and matched club agreements with The Rotary Club of Hsin -Tien Green Lake in Taiwan & The Rotary Club of Bangkok Port of Thailand.

The main thrust of the Club’s activities has been Community Service and it continued to serve out its aim to help the less privileged in the society. Throughout the twenty years of existence, the Club has raised funds through various activities to benefit more than forty deserving charitable organizations both in Singapore and abroad.

The 3rd Decade (RY: 2003/2004 – 2012/2013) This period is marked by gracious growth and maturity of the club.

Service remains the hallmark in most activities, whether to the local communities, the Interactors and Rotaractors, or overseas in its international projects. A culture of goodwill, good fellowship and a sense to warm friendship is probably a good description of the club’s nature and character.

Able leaders showed the way of the club, and throughout the decade

amassed numerous district accolades.

In 2009, the club was Host Club and Organising Club for RI District 3310 Inter-City Meeting where RI conferred the Rotary International Award of Hope on Singapore’s Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew. The function saw more than 600 Rotarians led by RI President at the Grand Hyatt to celebrate Rotary.

Community service was core, and through many activities, members reached within and found the deep desire to continue to make a difference in the life of others, particularly the disadvantaged, young and vulnerable, poor, elderly and the sick.

With service above self, there was the capacity to love our fellow human beings. And where there was avenue for participation, the Interactors and Rotaractors joined in to lend a hand.

In 2005, the Rotary Club of Shenton was chartered under the club’s

sponsorship. The decade also had the Interact Club of Northbrooks Secondary School chartered in 2009, the Interact Club of St Joseph’s Institution International chartered in 2011 and the Rotaract Club of Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) chartered in 2012.

Further afield, the club “adopted” the Children of the Golden Triangle (Akha hill tribe) in Thailand and for several years raised funds and made memorable visits. The club also supported other projects in Thailand, Laos and Malaysia.

The album “Rotary Rocks” with original songs and music, produced by the club, raised funds for community project enabling academically weaker students to build self-esteem and another chance for an alternative vocational path towards success.

The signature song Spreading Love has made its way to district conference and beyond.

The closing of the decade for the club was truly peace through service, serving humanity.

The 4th Decade (RY: 2013/2014 - Present) This decade began with Club President Rajamohan Munisamy (Mohan) in RY2013-14. In that year our club achieved EREY club recognition and full PHF Club as all members are Paul Harris Fellows. In the same year, RCPV organized the District Vocational Service Seminar for Singapore clubs, SUTD Entrepreneurship Forum where our members participated as speakers. The charity movie raised funds for ITE East college needy students via a meal voucher scheme. Myanmar became a new international location for the club’s humanitarian reach with donations of school uniforms and stationery to a village school in Hwambi, Yangon. There were also joint water projects in Long Semadoh, Sarawak and Doi Lan School in

Thailand. Mohan took the club to a new level, as Assistant Governor District 3310 in RY2014-15 and District Governor in RY2020-21.

In RY2014-2015, our club under President Elsie Chua attained significant mileage in a major community project: ‘A nation in Concert’. Aside from extensive press coverage in all newspapers, this musical performed by differently-abled beneficiaries (Association for Persons with Special Needs, Handicaps Welfare Association, The Singapore Association for the Deaf and Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped) with volunteer professionals reached an audience of over 2300 at the Marina Bay Sands theatre and delivered an impact of $330k to the 4 beneficiaries. A second Rotary Rocks album was also launched to promote Clean Drinking Water for the needy in Asia.

Over $20k were raised through this CD and went towards water filtration systems for schools in Chiang Rai and Laos. Elsie Chua also contributed at the District Level as District Public Image Chair and was Assistant Governor in RY2018-19 and Assistant Public Image Co-ordinator for Rotary Zone 10B and 10C in RY2022-23.

RY2015-2016 was a very meaningful and exciting year under Club President Judy Loh. We were the first club in the District with all our members fully registered on My.Rotary platform by the end of the first month of the Rotary year (July). Our major project was with SCORE in support of Yellow Ribbon, to raise S$100,000 for the families of the incarcerated. This money was utilized as an interim support to the ex-offenders and families, prior to long term community support from Social Service Offices (SSOs) or Community Development Councils (CDCs).

Part of the Yellow Ribbon experience was “Dining behind Bars” For many of our members, this was an impactful

eye opener and helped us appreciate the Prison administration and re-integration into society program better.

Apart from having a Christmas party for the children of the incarcerated, we closed our Yellow Ribbon project with two Mother’s Day event Stamford American Interact Club was chartered and installed this year as well.

In RY2016-17, President Dave Wee set off with club members to continue building a larger Clean Drinking water system to 2600 needy students in SahasartSuka School in ChianRai North. This was the first time that our club engaged in such a mega project with other participating clubs and funding through Rotary International Global Grant. The total budget expended for this mega water project was USD35k. For the local community, a 3 year project was undertaken with The New Charis Mission to refurbish 1 room homes for the needy in Ang Mo Kio and Chai Chee.

In RY2017-18, President TC Tan spearheaded another Global Grant project with a 3 year commitment to provide free Pneumonia vaccination for 300 needy eldery in the Teck Ghee community. This project which was supposed to be completed over 3 years was subsequently delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic which led to logistical issues in engaging with the elderly. The 3 year project was finally completed in RY2020-21. A

new Rotary song "Rotary Our Love Story" was also created by club members and presented to Rotarians during many District events.

In RY 2018-19, President Dennis Wee brought much fun and laughter to the club with fellowship and fund raisers done at his home as he personally cooked and served his famous Hokkien mee. Aside from continuing on the Pneumonia vaccination project and annual Redhill Food Distribution, a major music event "Rotary Rocks" involving the Battle of the Bands by professionals raised $29kk of funds for youngsters needing help at Tasek Jurong.

RY 2019-20, marks our first challenge as we started to operate under the Covid-19 pandemic. The club led by President Jeanne Lim raised funds of $11.5k to give out $250 to 46 families in the Teck Ghee community. This also marked the start of club lunch meetings moving from the physical space at the Grand Hyatt to a virtual one via zoom.

RY 2020-21, we had our first installation of Club President Philip Marcelo and his board via a Zoom Party that was well attended not only by club members but across other clubs in the District as well... virtually. Fund raising took on an innovative turn as in person meetings were restricted mostly to 5 only. Despite that the club raised through specially sponsored dining experience by a host

member, $8200 for provisions at Chen Su Lan Methodist Children's Home.

RY 2021-22 was a year where Club President Patrick Cheo would work towards bringing members back to meet physically as social restrictions from the Covid-19 pandemic were gradually lifted. The installation dinner was held at Grand Hyatt with social distancing and restrictions of 5 guests to one table without any intermingling between tables.

Despite navigating through all these social health conditions, the club was able to bring members to contribute funds for Batik Dolls to create opportunities for women and children in Batam where 5 new sewing machines were bought and funds given to the Cindrella Indonesia Foundation. The funds enabled female inmates at Batam prison to sew 7000 3-ply face masks for 6 months. RCPV also had the first family day event involving Rotarians and friends to cycle or walk for a cause. Over $22k was raised to assist 276 low-income families with school going children living in rental flats in the Woodlands/Sembawang area with $80 voucher to buy school books and stationery.

Overall, the key highlights above cannot fully depict the hard work undertaken by our hard working Presidents and their board each year in serving the community and growing the vibrancy of The Rotary Club of Pandan Valley.

1st July 2022 Club Officers of District 3310 2022-23

Dear Club Officers, I congratulate you on your installation as a club officer for 2022-23.

The upcoming year promises to be one of the most joyful and rewarding years of your life.

As club and district leaders, you have such an important role to play. You can do so much to help create club experiences that are welcoming, inclusive and enjoyable for each and every member – and you can extend that same warmth and belonging to every participant who wishes to engage with our clubs.

If we serve our members, we serve our communities. And if we provide comfort and care for our members, they will truly come to understand the power of Rotary.

We all feel the impact that Rotary service and Rotary values have on us ... now it’s our opportunity to share that feeling with others. This is a year to Imagine Rotary by envisioning a world that deserves our best, where we get up each day knowing we can make a difference. We don’t imagine yesterday, we imagine tomorrow.

We imagine a world without polio, with clean water for everyone. We imagine a world free of disease and where every child learns to read. We imagine kindness, hope, love, and peace.

It is an honor to work beside you as we guide our fellow Rotary members to another successful year. I am relying on you as we commit ourselves to Imagine Rotary.

District Governor's Message 2 July 2022 Dear President Steven Tan, Club Officers and Members of The Rotary Club of Pandan Valley, Thank you for your dedication and commitment to do good, and serve the community with ongoing humanitarian service projects. You have continued to innovate and demonstrate the ability to adapt during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Rotary International President-elect Jennifer Jones has called on us to dream big and think of ways that Rotary can touch the imagination of the whole world. Our dream in Rotary is to grow more and do more. When we are open to innovative ideas, we expand our horizons. We challenge previously held beliefs and move Rotary into a bold new and exciting future.

Paul Harris once said, “Rotary is a microcosm of a world at peace, a model which nations will do well to follow.” We want to improve people’s lives and help promote world peace and understanding utilizing our time, talent, and treasure. Alone, we can only do so much. But, with other Rotarians who are People of Action, we will work together to make our world better.

Rotary embraces diversity, equity, and inclusion. We will produce a generation of collaborative, representative, and effective leaders. Open your minds to possibilities and fresh ideas, continuing to enrich your leadership experiences. Sometimes, the best ideas come from the unlikeliest people around you. Actively seek out those great ideas, challenging you and your peers to become better leaders. Work with and listen to people different from us.

Rotary’s vision statement says: “Together, we see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change—across the globe, in our communities, and ourselves.” We must make Rotary a good idea for Rotarians, prospective Rotarians, Rotaractors, Interactors, and the family of Rotary.

Rotarians and Rotaractors equally are People of Action. We have an enormous responsibility and an excellent opportunity to improve our community with innovative and creative ideas. We cannot be mere spectators but must be active participants, benefiting our community. The world is changing, and Rotary must be at the forefront of these changes.

The world needs Rotary like never before, it needs us to be bold, to be inspirational, to be generous of our time and resources. We need to be better known as we achieve bigger goals. We need to think of new ideas that capture the public spirit. We need the world to know that we are the people who bring hope and make dreams possible.

Let us turn limitations into opportunities. We will make Rotary the leading service organization globally and make a positive difference in people’s lives. We will inspire and attract the new generations to join us in our good work. We may not see immediate results, but we are planting the seeds of our future success.

In the new Rotary Year, I look forward to the leadership of your 2022-23 Club President and Board of Directors to continue the good works to build the club, align your club’s strategic plan to Rotary’s Action Plan and the four Strategic Priorities: Increase Our Impact, Expand Our Reach, Enhance Participant Engagement and Increase Our Ability to Adapt, and our District 3310 goals.

I would like to encourage the Club to focus on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, membership attraction, engagement and retention in the year 2022-23; encourage members and friends of Rotary to build their legacy and “Do Good in the World” through The Rotary Foundation, and scale-up the club’s service projects and activities for even greater impact.

Message from Guest of Honour PDG Dr Philbert Chin Thank you for inviting me as a Guest of Honour to your installation dinner, where Rtn Steven Tan will be installed as the 40th President.

I am so happy to see that, at last, he is taking on the leadership role. I am sure in his quiet way, he will live up to your club’s expectations and I wish him and his board of directors, joy in doing “Service Above Self”, with the emphasis, I hope, on the words “Above Self”.

May I also take the opportunity to congratulate Patrick Cheo and his team for a very successful year in promoting fellowship and advancing the cause of Rotary so successfully in spite of Covid. I hope they too, found deep satisfaction in “Serving to Change Lives”.

I further understand that Steven served through his vocation in one of your club’s most recent projects. I am glad to note that Vocational Service is not dead. However I still believe it needs to be promoted from being an Occasional Service to a truly Vocational Service. After all, Vocational Service is the 2nd Object of Rotary and it is what our founder Paul Harris wanted Rotary to do. Remember, he said:

“If friendship and business can mix, so can business and service” Thus, Friendship, Business and Service become intertwined in the culture of Rotary.

Message from Immediate Past President Patrick Cheo Dear fellow Rotarians and Friends,

times for some people in Singapore.

We reached out to serve and to help however we could. Recurring projects such as giving mooncakes and fresh fruits to the elderly homes, organising food distribution in Redhill and cleaning the homes of the elderly brought a smile to many elderly folks in Singapore. Many thanks to Community Service Director PP Richard, Rtn Stefanie, Rtn Catherine, PP Tony, PP Cheng Kooi for their efforts in Community Service.

A year has passed by so quickly. We started the year in the midst of the pandemic and having to navigate the many restrictions of social mingling while organising our meetings and projects was a constant challenge.

Not forgetting the needy outside Singapore, we raised funds for the production of 7000 masks for underprivileged kids in Batam, to be sewn by 20 female prison inmates in an upskilling process.

While most clubs decided to do their installations virtually, we decided to delay ours to until the restrictions were relaxed. On 3rd Sept 2021, we managed to hold our 39th Installation dinner with an attendance of almost 50 people - the maximum number we could do then. I would like to thank PP Cynthia and Rtn Reena for helping out in the event and PP Cheng Kooi for the installation magazine.

We also put together a US$30K global grant project with the Rotary Clubs of Saigon and Saigon International to provide 5 urgently needed Baby Incubators for 5 hospitals in Vietnam.

Many thanks to International Service Director Rtn Louis Loo and Rotary Foundation Director PP Cynthia for your efforts in these projects.

Despite the restrictions, we continued with our regular lunch meetings. When we could dine out only in groups of 5s, we had breakout lunches in groups of 5s.

These were well attended as they were held at members' favourite restaurants.

Along the way, we managed to alternate between breakout lunches and regular lunch meetings at the Grand Hyatt. I would like to thank Club Service Director PP Jeffrey, PP Eng Hai, and Rtn Alice for your efforts in organising the speakers to speak at the lunches and innovate ways to make our lunches meaningful and fun.

In Youth Service, we continued to see strong projects being done by the youths at SUTD and SIAS. Credit goes to Rtn Reena, PP Eng Hai and Rtn Anil for your efforts to mentor these clubs.

We co-hosted an online career talk with SUTD on The Future of Working In Tech and Engineering where we helped arrange an external speaker and two of our own Rotarians to speak at the event. Thanks to Vocational Service Director PP Cheng Kooi for organising the event.

The most memorable event of the year was our RCPV Family Day held on 23 Apr 2022. It incorporated a cycling and walking activity for our

members and their friends. We raised a total of S$23,300 (original target: S$10,000) that will pay for 259 sets of Popular Bookstores gift vouchers of S$90 each. These will be gifted to 259 school-going children from low-income families living in rental flats in the Woodlands/Sembawang area, so that they can get for themselves basic necessities with which to start schooling such as school bags and water bottles.

Many thanks to PP Eng Hai and Rtn Alice for your great effort in organising this event.

Another good news I would like to share is that we will be sponsoring the first cause-based club in District 3310 called the Rotary Club of PeaceBuilders Singapore. It will be led by our very own Rtn Anil. Although we are are sad to see him leave the club, but in so doing, he will be starting something which will see more members joining the Rotary community.

Lastly, I would like to thank the Board of Directors for all your commitment to make sure that the year ran smoothly despite the restrictions imposed on us due to the pandemic.

As we end the year, it seems like we are coming out of the pandemic very soon as almost all restrictions have been lifted except for wearing of masks indoors.

Hopefully we can return back to our normal lives and continue to do more good for society.

Community Service Mid-Autumn Gifts for St John’s Home for Elderly Persons and Ju Eng Home, 29 August 2021

We’d have loved to celebrate in person the Mid-Autumn Festival of mooncakes and lanterns with the old folks at St John’s Home for Elderly Persons and Ju Eng Home, but because the Covid-19 pandemic was still raging on in August 2021, the in-person mingling was out of the question.

We did the next best thing, which is to visit the homes on 29 August 2021 with S$5,500 of mooncakes and exotic fruits for the 63 residents at St John’s Home and 430 residents at Ju Eng Home. The gifts were received by the administrators of the two homes.

Of the total amount spent on the mooncakes and fruits, S$4,000 came from the Club’s community service fund. The other S$1,500 were personal donations from Rotarians Stefanie Wong and Catherine Chan. Rotarian Catherine Chan also arranged and paid for the transport too.

Provisions and Life-Skill Program for children at Chen Su Lan Methodist Children’s Home

In the previous Rotary Year, the Club had embarked on a 2-part project for the Chen Su Lan Methodist Children’s Home. The home provides shelter, care and protection for children age 5 to 21 from disadvantaged backgrounds e.g. broken homes, dysfunctional households and abusive parents. Only 60% of the home’s operating expense is covered by the Government. The home depends on donors and corporate sponsors to cover the rest.

In the first part of our project, the Club had raised a total of S$8,000 from a

series of charity dinners and lunches to fund a whole year of provisions and daily needs for the children of the home.

The funds were disbursed in tranches of S$2,000 per quarter through 2021.

In the second part of the project, a workshop was arranged to boost the children’s self-esteem and equip them with lifelong skills. We were able to deliver this workshop on 21 and 22 December 2021 when Covid-19 restrictions were finally relaxed. We are thankful to President Patrick Cheo who as CEO of Adam Khoo Learning Technol-

ogies kindly arranged to defray the S$10,000 cost of running the workshop by using CSR funds from the Adam Khoo Learning Centre.

To round off our association with the Home these past 2 years, Rotarian Stefanie Wong who had been instrumental in setting up this project personally visited the Home to celebrate Valentine’s Day in February 2022 with cakes for the children and caregivers.

Lunar New Year Food Distribution at Redhill, 15 Jan 2022.

In a tradition going back more than 30 years, the Club returned to Block 89 Redhill Close to usher in the Lunar New Year by distributing food as well as Lunar New Year goodies to 180 old folks in the Bukit Merah neighbourhood.

This year, the Club decided to reduce the number of items in the bag and to provide premium items like dried shrimps, dried anchovies, instant oats, wholemeal bread/noodles, and certain canned food and seasonal fruits.

In the past, about half of the Club’s membership would show up to help out, along with a good number of members from the Rotaract and Interact Clubs. In the past 2 years, however, because of restrictions on social mingling, we had to work with a smaller number of volunteers.

Nonetheless, the project was successfully carried out by 16 RCPV members and spouses and 6 SUTD Rotaractors.

Make Life Better Silver Homes Project, 19 March 2022 Sometimes, all that is needed to make a difference in the lives of others is not a monetary contribution but a helping hand to do the things they cannot do for themselves. According to Central Singapore CDC, there are many rental flats occupied by senior citizens who live alone and are not physically able to maintain their home in good condition.

In the second such initiative within a 12-month period, a group of 8 RCPV members, along with a number of Rotaractors and business associates from Unicity, the Make Life Better Company, set aside a whole day, one Saturday in March 2022, to help clean up, declutter and repaint four rental flat at Blocks 117, 121 and 123 in Bukit Merah View. The volunteers were organised in groups of 4-5 to undertake the task at each apartment.

The latest Make Life Better Silver Homes project is organised in partnership with Central Singapore CDC, and the NTUC Health Senior Activity Centre (SAC) at Bukit Merah View. The previous one was carried out in April 2021.

RCPV Family Day cum Ride or Walk For A Cause Project, at Punggol Promenade, 23 April 2022 In the socially-restricted times of the Covid-19 pandemic, more people including Rotarians took to cycling.

One day, in September 2021, a thought arose in a RCPV chatgroup: If we could cycle for fun, we certainly can cycle for a good cause.

Later, another question was raised: What about those who do not cycle at all? In an effort to create an inclusive event, and get more members involved, the Ride for a Cause project, conceived by PP Lim Eng Hai with the encouragement of the Community Service Committee, evolved into a RCPV Family Day cum

Ride or Walk for a Good Cause Project!

Designed as such, the project could achieve multiple purposes. While raising funds for a good community cause, it would also promote camaraderie and fellowship among members, with families and friends of Rotarians included and involved. It was also an opportunity to create awareness of the name and work of Rotary among family, friends and associates of Rotarians.

For a cause worth supporting, the Community Service Committee identified the Back to School programme, one of a number of community outreach efforts of the Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF)’s Community Link initiative. The Back to School Programme is designed to encourage the school-going children of poor families living in rental families with gift vouchers that let the children get the things the need before the start of the school year.

A target of S$10,000 was set. Volunteers were enrolled from within the Club and from friends of Rotarians to sign up as Cyclists For a Cause or Walkers for a Cause. On registration, these volunteers would put in the first S$100 each to show their commitment for the cause. They will then be equipped with a canvassing letter and pack with which to canvass for donations of S$50 to 200 each from up to 10 family and friends.

In total, the project enjoyed the strong support of 14 Registered Cyclists and 21 Registered Walkers, including a number from outside the Club.

With the combined effort of many, and a big boost in the final days from a dollar-for-dollar matching offer from PP Lim Soon Hock, we exceeded the S$10,000 target by a huge margin, raising a total of S$22,138.

With a 5% top-up from Popular Bookstores, the Club has S$23,310 with which to purchase S$90 of gift vouchers for 259 children. With the vouchers, the students can buy school bags, water bottles, stationery and a few story books, with which to start their school-going experience come January 2023.

At a Board of Directors meeting on

26 April 2022, a few days after the project’s completion, President Patrick Cheo recorded a Big Thank You to Past President Lim Eng Hai and Rotarian Alice Yim for their hard work in organising this outstanding fund-raising project. At the District Conference in May 2022, the The Club received a Merit Award for one the Best Community Service projects of 2021-2022.

Club Service RCPV Lunch-Time Talks: 13 online, 8 in person It was another challenging year for the organising of the Club’s weekly meetings, with rules on social mingling and dining out tightening and loosening and tightening up again with the ebb and flow of the Covid19 pandemic.

Whenever we could, we organised in-person lunches at our usual meeting place, the Grand Hyatt, even when we had to struggle with restrictive rules on mask wearing (mask on unless you’re eating), and no one is to speak at the front when lunch is served and masks are off.

The default choices were online meetings and break-out lunches in small groups, as small as no more than 5 at times.

It was only in April 2022 that the situation improved by enough for an almost total relaxation of rules on dining out and social mingling, bringing much relief to everyone.

Despite all the ups and downs, we managed to line up 21 lunch-time talks, 13 of which were delivered online and 8 in-person.

2 July 2021 (online) IPDG Rajamohan Munisamy on “My Year as District Governor”. He had just a few days earlier completed his term as the District Governor for District 3310 under very unusual circumstances. There was no travelling from club to club and practically all meetings including District Conference and all seminars were carried out online.

9 July 2021 (online) Ms Lusia Kiroyan of the Cinderella Indonesia Center in Batam, spoke on the good work of the centre, helping women in prison to acquire skills and looking out for the street kids in Batam. We learnt about her Batik Dolls project. The presentation led to our International Service project - a partnership in the Batam Masks Project, where women in prison were equipped with new sewing machines, and paid to learn to use the machines to sew 1,000 masks a month over 7 months. These masks were then distributed to street kids for their protection during the Covid19 pandemic.

PP Francis Xavier spoke on the hot topic of the Geopolitics of the Russia-Ukraine Conflict, just as the military conflict was about to escalate. We had some words of encouragement from District Governor Dolly Yeap who came a-visiting 12 March 2022 (online) - Mr Zhou Qixiang, Manager of Social Service Officers Coordination Division, Ministry of Social & Family Development, on “Reaching Out to Society’s Poorest, most badly affected by Covid19 Disruptions” and the Back To School Programme. This talk helped prepare the ground for our Ride (or Walk) for a Good Cause fund-raising project on 23 April 2022.

1 April 2022 (in person) Ms Chan Chi Ling, Deputy Director of GovTech who was a speaker at a recent Rotaract Club of SUTD “Women in Tech for Good” Forum, accepted an invitation to come to the Club to speak on “Leveraging Technology for the Public Good”. She shared the inside stories on the fully rolled out ParkingSG App and an App developed to manage the Covid19 mass vaccination project

3 June 2022 (in person) In the wake of Malaysia’s ban on all chicken exports, including chicken rice loving Singapore, Rotarian Frederico Spengler and his colleague at BRF Asia, Raphael Leibel, spoke on “The Coming Food Crisis, and How We Might Get Out Of It”. There is more to worry about than the disrupted supply of live poultry from Malaysia!

8 April 2022 (in person) - Mr Aditya Batura, Founding CEO of Codomo, spoke on how to manage ourselves, our physical and mental well-being, while going all out in one’s journey as an entrepreneur. He shared frankly how he was forced to go from being health-conscious to becoming health-smart.

Vocational Service On 6 May 2022, the Rotary Club of Pandan Valley and the Rotaract Club of Singapore University of Technology & Design (SUTD) co-hosted an online career talk on The Future of Working In Tech and Engineering.

The talk, organised in response to the feedback on what students at SUTD were most interested in, was organised to provide insights for aspiring young start-ups who will soon graduate from their fields of study. The talk was opened to Rotaractors as well as other undergraduates at the university.

The guest speakers were our very own Rotarians PP Lim Soon Hock,

Managing Director of PLAN B ICAG and Rotarian Tan Ying Lan, CEO and Founding Managing Partner of Insignia Ventures, and Ms Charmain Tan, Founder & CEO of QuickDesk.

The three speakers shared their personal experiences on how to beat the odds in start-ups and entrepreneurship, where statistics say more than 90% will not survive past 5-10 years. Interestingly, their sharing all focused on the importance of knowing one’s “why” rather than “knowhow” in ensuring the success of start-ups and new business ventures.

International Service Batam Mask Project A presentation early in the Rotary Year on 9 July 2021 by Ms Lusia Kiroyan on her work at the Cinderella From Indonesia Center (CFIC) in Batam sowed the seeds for a S$7,900 International Service project involving 20 female prison inmates and hundreds of street kids in Batam.

It started with a fascination with the Batik Dolls that Lusia told us about, which resulted in a number of members placing orders for 21 Batik Dolls.

It was our way to show support for the good work we learnt about.

In follow-up conversations with Lusia, and brain-storming sessions at the Board of Directors and International Service committee, a more ambitious plan was hatched: The Batam Mask Project.

This was conceived as a joint project with Lusia and CFIC where Rotary Club of Pandan Valley will raise funds to procure a few sewing machines, which a number of female prison inmates will be trained to use to produce several thousand masks.

International Service and the material for the production of the masks, which will then be given away free to street kids for their protection with the Covid19 pandemic still raging on.

A decision was taken to start raising funds through the silent auction of Batik Dolls at the 39th Installation Dinner on 3rd September 2021.

Most of the members who had earlier bought the Batik Dolls donated them to the Club in support of the plans for the fund-raising auction. An impressive sum of S$2,616 was raised during the dinner.

Through his tenacity in talking incessantly about the project at various club meetings, International Service Director Louis Loo succeeded in getting his International Service Committee and many in the Club to step up, and pushed the total amount of funds raised to S$7,900.

With that much bigger sum, the Club was able to fund the procurement of 5 sewing machines instead of just 3 as originally planned, and paid for the material and the labour for a total of 7,000 masks. These were churned out at a steady rate of 1,000 pieces a month over 7 months. Through this project, at least 20 female prison inmates received training in a skill which we hope they can use to earn income in the future when released from prison. While learning the skills, they got paid for the masks they produced.

Rotary Foundation Rotary Foundation/International Service Project US$30,000 Global Grant project to provide 5 hospitals in Vietnam with urgently-needed baby incubators In a partnership with two Rotary Clubs in Vietnam, RC Saigon an RC Saigon International, the Rotary Club of Pandan Valley had the opportunity to embark on a US$30,000 Global Grant project to provide five baby incubators to 5 different hospitals in the remote Vietnamese province of Quang Tri. This is the third Global Grant that RCPV has embarked on to-date.

Through our partner clubs, we learnt that several hospitals in remote locations in Vietnam were in dire need of medical equipment, including baby incubators.

Our partner clubs should know: RC Saigon and RC Saigon International have been very active in supporting healthcare in their community. They have supplied 150 oxygen concentrators to hospitals in Saigon, Binh Duong and other provinces.

They identified an urgent need for incubators for babies. In normal times, many hospitals do not have enough incubators. The shortages and the need became more acute during the Covid-19 pandemic. Millions of babies were born to Covid-infected mums.

They need special medical attention, and should not be sharing incubators, but with the shortage of baby incubators, they were.

The risk of cross-infections were high, and the survival rates of newborns became a bigger issue.

In normal times, infant mortality was running at 15.9 per 100 live births. While it was not the highest in the world, it compared poorly with more developed neighbouring countries like Singapore (2 per 100), Malaysia (7) and Thailand (8).

Rotary Club of Pandan Valley. Rotarians from other Rotary clubs (Singapore and Chiang Rai North) also contributed to the project. With the on-the-ground effort of our partner clubs, the project was successfully completed in May 2022. The

Against this background, RCPV along with the Rotary Clubs of Saigon and Saigon International agreed to carry out a joint project, seeking and procuring the support of Rotary District 3310’s Global Grant committee and International committee. This project can save lives and positively impact needy communities. Moreover, health care (maternal and children’s needs) is one of Rotary International’s areas of focus.

Rotary Foundation As at 28 April 2022, The Rotary Club of Pandan Valley has contributed $16,190 and for RY2021-22, we have 38 EREY members, 38 Sustaining Members and 10 members had contributed at least US$1000 or more

to the Annual Fund, Polio Plus or approved Foundation grant. These contributions has played an important role as our club applied for funding in the Global Grant project for 2 baby

incubators to be installed in Can Tho and SooThan Maternity Hospitals on March 24, 2022 with another 3 more to arrive in mid May 2022.

Youth Service The Rotaract Club of SUTD Early in the year, on 6 August 2021, we invited the Community Service Director and Incoming President of the Rotaract Club, Miss Kellie Sim, to do a Lunch-time Talk and speak to Rotarians on the topic, “Service in the time of a pandemic, local and overseas”.

In the course of the Rotary Year, the Rotary Club of Pandan Valley had numerous opportunities to engage, interact and collaborate with leaders and members of the Rotaract Club of Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD).

Rotarians were briefed on a long-running signature project of the Rotaractors, called YEAH, the acronym for Youth Engagement at Heartlands Programme. In this programme, the Rotaractors befriend and mentor under-privileged Primary 4 to Primary 6 students, and run science experiments and fun learning sessions over Zoom.

RCPV made it a point to invite at least two representatives of the Rotaract Club to major functions of the Club e.g. the 39th Installation Dinner on 3 September 2021, our quarterly Club Assemblies and Christmas Dinner.

These provide useful opportunities for in-person discussions about joint projects.

Joint Projects carried out during the year were:

1. The Make Life Better Silver Homes Project: The Rotaractors were instrumental in the success of the first Silver Homes Project in April 2021. They showed up strongly again in the second edition of the project in March 2022. The Rotaractors provided more than enough volunteers to set up one of the four groups of 5 volunteers each, and ended up being involved in 3 of the 4 groups. In the latest effort, Rotarians,

Rotaractors and people from Unicity, the Make Life Better Company, took on the assignment of cleaning up, decluttering and repainting 4 rental flats in Bukit Merah View. It was a gallant full day effort.

2. Career Talk on the Future of Working in Tech and Engineering, 6 May 2022: Professional Development programmes are an important ongoing activity for any Rotaract Club.

RCPV’s Vocational Services Director PP Lim Cheng Kooi collaborated with the Rotaract Club’s Professional Development Director Erick Chandra to organise an online seminar on The Future of Working in Tech & Engineering. RCPV helped sourced for the speakers for the event: RCPV Past President Lim Soon Hock, who speaks with extensive experience in the global computer companies, venture capitalist Rotarian Tan Ying Lan, and Ms Charmain Tan, Founder and CEO of a tech start-up QuickDesk.

On their own, Rotaractors continued with their annual Technopreneurship forum, a professional development programme the Cub has undertaken for a number of years. On 11 March 2022, the Club staged an online forum on “Women In Tech For a Good Cause”.

The speakers were Ms Kay Liew, Co-Founder of Tech For She, a platform to support women in tech, and Ms Chan Chi Ling, Deputy Director at Gov Tech (Open Government Products).

The Club was awarded a Certificate of Achievement and the Bronze Award for organising the professional development event at Rotary International District 3310’s District Conference on 12 June 2022.

In line with deepening global concerns over the climate crisis, and the need to think “sustainability”, the Club organised on 21 December 2021 an online seminar on “Tackling Food Waste & Building a Sustainable Consumption Habit”. SUTD students got to learn from social entrepreneurs about the opportunities in reducing food wastage and promoting consumption of eco-friendly food. The speakers were founders of two start-ups Mike Sun of Savour! and Jennifer Widjaja of Just Dabao.

In partnership with the National Kidney Foundation (NKF), the Rotaractors launched Project Renal, a sustained multi-media campaign throughout the month of October 2021 to promote greater awareness of kidney health issue and the need to adopt healthier lifestyles. With interest in the subject at a high, the Club took the opportunity to raise funds to support patients in need of dialysis. The Rotaractors managed to raise a tidy sum of S$1,161.

The plight of the homeless did not escape the attention of our Rotaractors. On 7 January 2022, the Club collaborated with Homeless Hearts of Singapore to organize an online seminar on Homeless In Singapore. SUTD students got to learn about the plight and day-to-day life of “rough sleepers” in Singapore, and would have gone away thankful for the life and at the same time, motivated to do good wherever they can.

Youth Service Interact Club of Stamford American International School In spite of restrictions in the first half of the Rotary Year, the Interact Club of SAIS persevered and successfully completed two worthwhile projects.

Celebrating Eid al-Fitri with school’s maintenance staff, 6 May 2022 In an event conceived to show appreciation for the school’s maintenance staff for their hard work, members of the Club created more than 80 hand-made Hari Raya greeting cards for the staff. These cards were given out to the staff on 6 May 2022, along with goodie bags.

Fund-raising for homeless children in Vietnam, 23 May 2022 The Interact Club organised a book sale in support of its signature project - to raise funds for homeless children and

victims of human trafficking in Vietnam. The outreach was a collaboration with an NGO called Blue Dragon. Through the book sale, the Club managed to raised S$731.15 for the cause.

Membership of the club and brought home the district award at the 24th Rotary International District 3310 conference in 2015 along with increasing the membership at the SUTD Rotaract club from 20 to 100 strong. He also initiated the OCIP project to Laos which continues annually to this day.

Our club activities from lunch meetings with speakers, community projects, club assembly and fellowship gatherings were all shared in the club's facebook pages reaching out to members, friends and followers of our activities. All key events are also profiled in our club website that provides more organised information of our club to the public at large.

This year Rotary Club of Pandan Valley has also been accorded with 2 awards at the District level. We were conferred by the District as a Special Recognition EREY (Every Rotarian Every Year) Club.

We also attained a merit award for the Best Community Service Project RY2021-2022 - Family Day Ride Walk Project.

Our club's membership is at 37, with a loss of 4 members: Markus Keiper, Leong Sai Fan, Lim Cheng Kooi and Jeanne Lim in RY2021-22. All of them have served our club admirably for many years and we hope to continue to see them coming back as friends of Rotary, joining us in our numerous community projects and club fellowships.

We are pleased to have a new member Aditya Singh on board and installed at our last Club Assembly.

Aditya first got involved with Rotary club of Pandan Valley (RCPV) back in 2013 as part of the pioneer batch of SUTD students who first set up the Rotaract club at their university under the guidance of PP Elsie Chua and the rest of the RCPV family. He went on to become the second president

Since graduation in 2016, Aditya has been in the healthcare industry moving from Data scientist for General practitioner software at Medtech in New Zealand to currently being an Associate Director at ArisGlobal within the Pharmacovigilance industry; specialising in regulatory analytics on vaccination & drug safety while working closely with top Pharmaceuticals such as BMS and Merck.

Aditya has also been active within the community while in New Zealand and being involved in Mathematics Maori education at Papakura, Auckland in 2017-2018.

Aditya is a newly wed and both him and his wife (Jean) love travelling & enjoying nature where possible. And needless to say, both are excited to join the RCPV family!

The Final Word: A letter from Charter President Michael W Haines The Rotary Club of Pandan Valley.

Charter Members, represented by so many different nationalities, when I state, that we are very proud of what you have achieved and believe the club is well established to ensure its success in the future. With many thanks to our charter member Tony Tng who has helped shepherd the club these past years and our favourite supporter P D G, Philibert Chin.

To the Incoming President Steven Tan, Members of the board and all members.

President Steven, tonight you will receive a jewel that not only represents your position as President of the Rotary Club of Pandan Valley but a jewel in the crown of Rotary itself, for if any club can claim this title it has to be The Rotary Club of Pandan Valley. When with the generous support of Past District Governor Dr Philibert Chin, I helped formed Pandan Valley, now forty years ago, we could never have anticipated how successful the club would prove to be, nor the dedication to be shown by its many Presidents, Boards and members of the club, nor I would add, the level of concern you have all consistently provided for the community, over these many years..

Though sadly I have not been able to attend your club meetings, participate in your many good works or the marvellous hospitality functions the club has hosted, I have closely followed your activities from a distance .I am sure I speak for any one of those original

Twenty-nine good looking and vibrant young men (of course that’s only my own opinion) formed Pandan Valley forty years age, though, far too many have regrettably gone to meet their maker. Of those twenty-nine only five had previously been members of the Rotary movement, which perhaps gives credit to my powers of persuasion. But we quickly bonded and the spirit of Pandan Valley was born. Let’s be honest most of us that remain could now be be classified as Dinosaurs as we actually lived in those simpler days without Face Book ,Twitter or those tell-tale cameras built into our mobile phones. But the essence of Rotary was always there. We believed in what we were doing and got a hell of a lot of fun out of doing it .

I have always been aware of the power of women, though regrettably ladies were not officially welcomed into our great organisation until 1987, by which time I had already left Singapore. This meant I was unable to personally welcome to our esteemed club the many ladies whose company you now so enjoy. The inclusion of lady Rotarians has created a different dimension to our endeavours and the value of their presence has been proven time and time again.. Thankfully the battle is over and your presence has re-energised the movement , in fact we really don’t know how we managed without you.

Many people have asked me to describe the essence of Rotary and its appeal to members, so apart from the wonderful long-standing personal friendships made and the great works undertaken for the community, perhaps some of the following examples might help to explain its unique appeal.

On one of my trips to Europe I attended a club meeting held in Portugal, where it appeared, , English was seldom used. As a result, this inhibited my social interaction and I had to sit through a torturous series of speeches, not a word of which I understood. At the end of the very long well fed though lonely evening, just as I was leaving, the President a rather well-endowed, but smartly dressed lady rushed over to me and to my utter surprise crushed me to her bosom and said in excellent English ”You are most welcome” What a marvellous way to make up a 100% attendance..

I also remember attending a Rotary club in France where we were welcomed with open arms by the President and members . A very elegant club where the food and wine were excellent but the room a little, crowded. Notwithstanding we had to sit through another torturous evening of extremely long speeches in French, which even irritated the members of the French club, the main

speaker being a rather verbose District Governor (I’m sure they are the same in every country). It was undoubtedly a pleasant evening, though when we got back to our hotel it was to find that our Rotarian guide had in fact by error taken us to the wrong club, who had had the courtesy not to tell us our visit was unexpected. The original meal was costly enough but as we were required to pay for all the meals we hadn’t consumed at our intended destination, this made for a horribly expensive evening.

Attendance at meetings can sometimes be risky as when I was an officer of the Rotary Club of London I watched a rather ancient servitor with a very shaky hand, miss a heaped plate of chocolate profiteroles and pour a whole jug of sticky brown sauce into the lap of a visiting Rotarian. an unbelievable sight.

The sauce poured like Niagara Falls, from the silver jug , first covering our visitors tie, then slowly dripping down his shirt front and eventually settling in a rather messy puddle in his lap. Thankfully our visitors tie, shirt and trousers were all brown in colour which helped, but to watch the absorption of the sauce by his clothing made for a fascinating experience .After we had cleaned him up as best we could, being a true Rotarian stoic and generous, he graciously turned down our offer to pay for the dry cleaning, but I don’t think he ever visited the London club again.

My son Michael was for many years a highly competent professional blue-water sailor at which time due to circumstances beyond his control he was laid off at Port Lauderdale in Florida and found it difficult to find a new berth at short notice Since I knew no one in Florida I telephoned a senior Rotarian at

headquarters in Chicago who very kindly offered his assistance. The result first I had a personal call from the President of the Miami club to see what he could do to help, then surprisingly another from the President of the Fort Lauderdale club, culminating in an introduction to the Chief executive of a very famous and successful class of boats then currently raced in America.

An amazing response to my call for help,.

After all none of these people had ever heard of me before, yet they gave their time, energy and absorbed all costs to resolve Michaels problem. Such is the power of Rotary.

This certainly applied when I discovered that one of my ex Muslim employees very urgently required a double heart valve replacement. Though the famous heart surgeon Victor Chang in Sydney had offered to undertake the operation for free, insufficient funds had been raised to pay for the required valves or the young man’s flight to Australia. As time was of the essence I spoke to Victor in Australia and then contacted Singapore Airlines, who kindly granted the young man free passage to Sydney. The Rotary Club of Sydney paid for one valve and your mother club Jurong Town the other, in addition, the Sydney hospital offered most of the backup clinical services free. The operation proved a huge success, the young man returned to Singapore, went back to work and eventually got married. A fairy tale story except that regrettably Victor Chang was shot and killed in a failed extorsion event. A great loss to the medical world .

My own introduction to Rotary was in the mid 50’s when I pulled a rickshaw dressed in a dotty and chuplies for the Rotary Club of Madras. Though not a fully formed club at the time I attended

a business lunch in South India where everyone sat on the floor at low tables and I was seated on a chair behind a wooden tea chest covered with a white dotty. The meal served was a magnificent curry but I appeared to have been excluded, Then, to my surprise the bearer came with a loaf of white bread, a tin of butter and a jar of strawberry jam.I frankly I was nonplussed until my host explained the members felt I might not be able to eat their very hot curry and as they all knew Englishmen liked bread and butter and jam this is what they served. This then is the essence of Rotary kind and considerate, a wonderful group of men and women.

Pandan Valley has been resident at the Hyatt hotel since its formation. This venue was chosen over all others for its then current connection to Rotary, the numerous courtesies shown to our club and the breadth of food available. In my day we held great Christmas parties where and due to the fact that I, could not see my shoes without seriously bending over I was elected as Father Christmas. I agreed to undertake the same function in my current club in Hampshire but regrettably the father Christmas suit offered was built to house a six-foot three frame and I ended up looking rather like Dopey from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

Probably one of the more spectacular Rotary events I ever had the privilege to attend was our own tenth anniversary dinner when my wife Jane and I flew from England for a holiday in Singapore.

As some of you may know I have always enjoyed the company of the ladies giving rise to my being introduced by my proposer to Rotary, at a dinner at the old Cathay restaurant in 1967 as ” The lady killer”, a classification that stuck

with me for many years. Subsequently when referring to my time as President of Pandan Valley” instead of Mike Haines Past President I was always referred to as PKP or Past Kissing President a name I am not sure I really deserve. As a result, in my honour, the tenth Anniversary featured a fantastic fashion show, which I would add, left little to the imagination.

I have been a member or officer of five individual Rotary Clubs and continue to be a member of the Rotary Club of Lymington. Now fifty-five years on, I have come to love and respect the work carried out by Rotary and have enjoyed every moment of my association with this great fellowship of nations. It is with deep regret that age and mobility prohibit me from attending this momentous occasion , the clubs fortieth anniversary celebration, but I am still around and will at least be there in spirit as I shall raise a glass of extra dry vintage Moet or some other excellent brand of champagne, to wish you all happiness and success in your future endeavours.

My regards to you all and I would like to conclude with a message from the President and members of the Lymington club “Congratulations on your fortieth Anniversary and have a wonderful evening.”
