In our district 3310, we have over 2000 members a total of 72 Rotary Clubs with 2 clubs in Brunei, 24 clubs in Singapore, 3 clubs in Malacca, 1 club in Labuan FT, 11 clubs in Sarawak, 14 clubs in Sabah and 17 clubs in Johor.

Solving real problems takes real commitment and vision.

For more than 110 years, Rotary’s people of action have used their passion, energy, and intelligence to take action on sustainable projects.

From literacy and peace to water and health, we are always working to better our world, and we stay committed to the end.

We provide service to others, promote integrity, and advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through our fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders.

In June 2017, the Rotary International Board of Directors and Rotary Foundation Board of Trustees approved Rotary’s new vision statement: Together, we see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change — across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves.

This statement reflects both our identity and our purpose — the organization we are now, and the organization we are working to become.

Individually, our aspirations are limited by our own abilities and resources. But when many people work together toward a common goal, the scope of their ambition is limited only by their collective strength. Together, we have resettled refugees, helped entire communities after national disasters, and brought the world to the brink of polio eradication. As a leading member of a global partnership, we are closer to ending polio than ever before. Rotary does not wait for a solution; we work to create it. Message From 2018-19 Rotary International President

Dear fellow Rotarians and friends, Esther and I are excited to welcome you to your 2018-19 District Conference. I hope that you take advantage of this opportunity to come together, connect, and share ideas on how to help Rotary do its job in the world, better. By working together strategically and efficiently, your impact — and Rotary’s impact — becomes much more significant.

We must ensure that Rotary continues to provide the best possible experience to its members, that it continues to grow and be useful through sustainable service. Our Rotarians need to feel the value of being a member of your Rotary Club. We have to make sure that we are transparent and accountable, all while changing the lives of as many people as possible. While setting goals and hitting milestones are important, it’s even more important to always look beyond this year. We have to think about how what we achieve now will help set the tone not only today or tomorrow, but well beyond our own time in Rotary.

Together, we see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change – across the globe, in our communities and in ourselves.

Dear Fellow Rotarians, Ladies and Gentlemen, Please accept my warm greetings. It is a great privilege and honor for me and my spouse Nasreen to represent Rotary International President Barry Rassin and his gracious spouse Esther to the District Conference of Rotary International District 3310.

My sincere thanks to RI President Barry Rassin for giving us this honorable opportunity.

Each year, Districts are asked to hold a conference for club members so they can learn about what’s happening in Rotary and their District and meet other Rotarians in the area. The conference includes:

Rotary service transforms lives and communities.

• A visit from a president’s representative, who gives an update on Rotary International and inspires and motivates participants • A report on the District, including its successes and challenges • An official business meeting to discuss and vote on important District matters • Local and International speakers giving information on topics relevant to district members • Time to network, reconnect with friends, and find inspiration for continuing service and community leadership Rotary still is, and always will be, the organization Paul Harris envisioned: a place where people from every corner of the earth can come together to become something greater than themselves. Yet Rotary today offers something of singular and enduring value: the chance to be part of a global network of people who have the talent and the drive to change the world. We are men and women who believe in the power of community action to make a global impact — and together, we have the capacity and the resources to achieve almost anything.

Rotary service transforms lives and communities. To achieve even more of that truly transformational service, we need to think differently about our role in Rotary, and Rotary’s role in the world. We need to put more emphasis on our public image, using social media to build our membership and attract the partners that can help us scale up our service. We need to focus on larger projects that have a more lasting impact, taking the time to research and plan work that spans Rotary years and terms of office.

Most important of all, we need to Be the Inspiration for positive change, inspiring our clubs, our communities, and our organization to face today’s challenges head on, with courage, optimism, and creativity.

A key reason people are drawn to Rotary membership is the promise of work on meaningful service projects in their communities and other parts of the world.

Clubs that conduct multiple projects can offer more opportunities for involvement, making members feel that they are contributing to an important effort.

Rotarians value the relationships that are formed within their clubs. This is one of the primary reasons that people stay in Rotary. Encourage members to learn about their fellow members. A major reason for the success of The Rotary Foundation was that “we set ambitious, but reasonable, goals every year,” and thanks to these goals and the projects that result from them. I wish Rotary International District 3310 Conference a Grand Success.

Message From Rotary District 3310 Governor 2018-19

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to our 28th District 3310 Conference which is held in Penang. You have travelled from Brunei, different parts of Malaysia, Singapore and other parts of the world to attend this Conference. I appreciate your strong support and enthusiasm.

The Conference provides plentiful opportunities for all attendees to renew their friendship, make new friends and get to know each other in greater depth. It is one way of promoting goodwill and understanding. The Conference is also an opportunity to update ourselves on what is happening in the District and the Rotary world. With the hard work of our Organising Committee an interesting programme has been drawn up. This program incorporates meaningful events such as talks, sharing sessions, fellowship events, etc. I urge all attendees to take part in these activities/events as much as possible.

HENRY & ELLEN TAN District Governor 2018-19

The Conference provides plentiful opportunities for all attendees to renew their friendship, make new friends and get to know each other in greater depth.

In my visits to all the Clubs in our District 3310 I noted that our Rotarians have displayed great eagerness to serve Rotary in various ways. Many service projects have been planned and completed to help the communities around us. A number of these projects are ongoing. I am confident that such projects will be sustained for a long time with all your continuous support. Not only are individual Rotary Clubs helping the people in their respective towns/postal districts, a number of them have come together to undertake joint-projects. I encourage such joint projects not only between clubs but with outside entities too as such collaboration will result in larger projects which can be more impactful and this in turn will help raise the public profile of Rotary.

Rotary’s new vision statement calls for unity. At the District level, we have responded to Rotary President Barry Rassin’s call to organise Rotary Day/s involving our communities. In our District the 23rd of Feb 2019 was set aside to mark Rotary Day. On that day, all Clubs came together to celebrate and publicise the event in various ways such as the launch of joint-community projects, organising exhibitions at various public locations to create public awareness of Rotary, arranging media coverage, etc. At the Club level, several clubs have also undertaken joint-fellowship events. These are all good initiatives and I hope such efforts can continue. By being united, we can do greater things and contribute to our communities in a more significant way.

Prior to this District Conference we have started to raise money to help top-up the fund for the Gift of Life Project which is undertaken by RC of Penang and the Adventist Hospital. This ongoing project is to help needy heart patients undergo heart transplant. On 28 April 2019, on behalf of District 3310, I will hand over the cheque representing the money collected. Until then I encourage all Rotarians to give generously. I also like to thank District 3300 for their support too.

Special thanks go to our Guest-of-Honour for gracing the occasion, our sponsors for their strong support, the Organising Committee for all the hard work, the speakers for our events for deepening our knowledge of Rotary, our Rotarians and spouses for your kind attendance. You all have made the Conference a success.

In concluding may I recommend to you to do some sightseeing of this lovely island of Penang, do savour the local delicacies, spend some time at the beaches and indulge in shopping especially of local products.

Message From Organising Chairman

Dear Participating Rotarians, Spouses, Rotaractors, Interactors and Friends of Rotary, On behalf of the Organising Committee, I welcome you all to Penang… the Pearl of the Orient!

You have all contributed to an Inspiring Year of Rotary and I hope that as we approach the end of RY 2018-19, you will find relaxation and FUN at this District Conference.

It is always a challenge to hold a conference outside of the District and we are indebted to President Stephanie and members of RC Penang for the invaluable assistance given in organising this event.

Penang is an awesome venue with attractions galore and fabulous cuisine to distract the most ardent conference goer!! We hope that we have tailored the conference programme such that most of you will want to attend all the sessions.

This year we have introduced a “Mandarin-track” in the plenaries led by the distinguished PDG Ortho from Taiwan. We trust that this initiative from DG Henry will develop and blossom in future conferences.

Not to be outdone, we have a highly recommended speaker on “Values” in the English plenaries in the person of Mr Shafie Shamsuddin, President and CEO at PT.Trans Retail Indonesia.

I welcome you all to Penang… the Pearl of the Orient!

And in our Spouses Programme, we have planned a visit to a “piah” factory; cooking demonstration of Nyonya dishes; a Peranakan thng tok lunch and an introduction to Joget dance!

Also on Sunday, as a climax to our conference, we will be going out to the Rotary House for a “Gift of Life” community service project with our partners, RC Penang and The Adventist Hospital Penang.

After the formalities are over, there is also an optional tour up Penang Hill to enjoy the sights in the cool of the evening followed by a steamboat dinner before descending back to our hotel.

These are but four of the events that will happen in this conference and we encourage you to avail yourselves of every “happening”!

And finally to my hardworking Organising Committee, all the volunteers and sponsors… a BIG thank you for striving so hard to make this a meaningful and enjoyable conference.

Mr Shafie Shamsuddin is the Chief Executive Officer and President of Board of Director at PT. Trans Retail Indonesia. Before joining Trans Retail in Indonesia he was the Executive Director, Global Talent Management & Organizational Development of Carrefour Group based in Paris. Carrefour has more than 400,000 employees worldwide. He also served as Managing Director of Carrefour Singapore and Carrefour Malaysia prior to his appointment in Paris. He has served Carrefour for over 16 years and was appointed Regional Director for Carrefour Singapore in February 2005.

PDG Dr. Ching Huei Horng (Ortho) received his undergraduate dental education from the Taipei Medical University, School of Dentistry in Taiwan. And his orthodontic specialty training as well as craniofacial biology master degree was from University of the Southern California, USA. He was a part-time clinical instructor for the postgraduate program in Orthodontics at his dental school and has been in the private practice of the orthodontics for over 25 years. He held numerous Rotary International roles for Rotary International District 3490 and is currently the Rotary International District Motion Committee Chair for Rotary Year 2018-19 as well as the E/MGA, Zone 9 for the Initiative Committee in The Rotary Foundation.

He did his LL.M and LLB (Hons) from Dhaka University and obtained a Post-Graduate Diploma in Industrial Management from Bangladesh Institute of Management and another Diploma in Leadership from the Institute of leadership, UK. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Sales and Marketing Management, UK with a Post graduate Diploma in Sales & Marketing Management from the Institute of Sales and Marketing Management, UK. He did his Executive MBA from USA. SAM Showket Hossain is best known in Bangladesh Corporate Sector as an Inspirer of leadership, people and organisation development.

PDG Dr Arasu Rajaratnam is Rotary Coordinator 2018-21 for Zone 6B and is the Convener for the 2019-20 Regional Team Training (Zone 6B) in Bangkok. He was a Rotary International Training Leader representing Zones 6A and 6B to train Governors-elect at the 2015 International Assembly in San Diego, Chairman of 2 Rotary Institutes, the Training Leader for District Trainers Training Seminars for 4 consecutive Rotary Institutes of Manila, Bangkok, Bali and Taipei. PDG Dr Arasu is a dental practitioner and is a member of the Rotary Club of Kajang since 1979, served as District 3300 Governor during 2000-01 and District Trainer for 2 terms, and is a winner of the RI Service Above Self award.

PP Dr T Thirumoorthy has been a Rotarian since 1984. He is a past president of the Rotary Club of Tanglin. He is a medical doctor by vocation and worked as d dermatologist in both the public and private sector. He is the Founding Director of the Singapore Medical Association Centre for Medical Ethics and Professionalism (SMA CMEP), serving as the Executive Director form 2000-2003 and 2011 to 2016. He holds a Master of Arts degree in Healthcare Ethics and Law from the University of Manchester (2007) and a Masters in Counselling (Monash) in 2015.

Dr Thiru currently holds the position as Group Chief Medical Officer of the IHH Healthcare where the scope of his work includes clinical governance, professional governance and patient safety and risk management.

CHER BOON SIM

Cher Boon Sim is a Rotaractor representative who is a district officer (zone 3 representative) in Rotary Year 2017-18. Currently pursuing his degree in Bachelor of Science, Information Systems (Cyber Security) at The Singapore Management University (Sophomore) and expected to graduate in August 2021. He had represented the University Security special interest group, SMU Whitehat Society in multiple local and overseas competitions. Having taken industry certifications such as Cisco Certified Network Associate and Offensive Security Certified Professional, and lessons learnt from these certifications, Cher Boon conducted technical workshops as part of SMU Whitehat Society’s technical knowledge workshop.

We Connect People Through Rotary clubs, people from all continents and cultures unite to exchange ideas and form friendships and professional connections while making a difference in their backyards and around the world THE ROTARY CLUB OF SENTOSA set off with 22 Rotarians, family members, potential members and friends to Siem Reap from 10 to 13 January 2019. Over there stationery and snacks were given to 164 students of Mebon Primary School. We observed meals for students of Hua Yee school who is supported by the United Nations World Food Program and contributed funds for them to buy simple water filter system for their classes. 888 bicyles were handed over to school children and volunteer cooks from the rural area. We visited 2 primary schools in Siem Reap and are looking at housing projects in Cambodia for the needy.

THE ROTARY CLUB OF BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN rallied all members to clean the Meragang Beach.

A total of 582 bags of 15 kg rubbish were collected and 81 volunteers came to help.

We thank Organising Chair and all 81 vounteers for helping to keep our beaches clean!

On 14 January 2019 THE ROTARY CLUB OF BATU PAHAT visited the Deaf and Special Needs students at Sek. Keb. Pendidikan Khas B Pahat. We sent them the basic necessities and continued to liase with them to understand that they also needed pampers, school bags and milk powder. All these were sent to them. It is a small school with enrolment of 45 students but with a caring heart our Rotarians will engage and continue to do more.

We Connect People On 15 December THE ROTARY CLUB OF SINGAPORE EAST brought Christmas joy to the residents of Sree Narayana Nursing Home. Children from various Homes took part in the festivities too and it was a day of rewarding engagement in bringing cheer and comfort to the residents of the Nursing Home.

On 31 July 2018 THE ROTARY CLUB OF MARINA CITY members brought 40 elderly out to Gardens By The Bay to view the Gardens Festival. This festival featured over 100 varieties of award-winning and heritage orchids at Gardens by the Bay. The seniors enjoyed the different country themes and the tasty McDonald’s lunch at the end of the tour.

THE ROTARY CLUB OF RAFFLES CITY had an Annual Christmas Event at the Red Cross Home for the Disabled at Leng Kee Family Hub. The Rotaractors of the Rotaract Club of Raffles City helped organise the event, leading the singing of Christmas carols and feeding the residents who all needed assistance with their meals. Joy and comfort were brought to the residents of the Home during this season of good cheer.

THE ROTARY CLUB OF QUEENSTOWN were invited by our community service partner Giken Sakata Pte Ltd’s CSR Committee to help brighten up the new All Saints Home Elderly Day Care centre at Fern Grove, Blk. 674 Yishun Avenue 4.

It was a chance for most Rotarians to experience what it was like to be an artist too. We hope the elderly day care patients and the residents in the neighbourhood will enjoy the vibrant and colourful work of love and art.

THE ROTARY CLUB OF MUAR AND ROTARY CLUB OF TANGKAK LEDANG jointly worked with corporate sponsors, Micron Foundation to contribute full sets of school uniforms and bags to all the pupils of Sekolah Rendah Jenis Tamil Ladang Nordanal in Grisek, Johor, about a 30 minute drive from Muar. The pupils were very happy to receive their new uniform, in time for the new school term in January 2019.

THE ROTARY CLUB OF KOTA KINABALU SOUTH did several socio medical outreach. On 24 August 2018 it was to Kg. Meligan, Sipitang. Other places covered was Kg. Rukom, Pitas, Sabah. Team was led by Past President Dtk. Dr. Ganesh with medical officers from Pitas Hospital.

We Think Differently THE ROTARY CLUB OF KUCHING CENTRAL distributed food to poor families in their region. On December 23, 2018 they gathered to distribute food parcels to the hardcore poor families in Tapah area. On 16 March 2019 basic essential items such as coffee, sugar, cooking oil, biscuits, mee hoon, milk, t-shirts, bedsheets, rice etc were distributed to the urban poor around Petra Jaya area in Kuching.

THE ROTARY CLUB OF PONTIAN takes care of The Pontian Rotary Haemodialysis Centre. We are grateful to receive on 5 January 2019, a RM50,000 pledge from Madam Wong You Fong an Independent Non-Executive Director at Star Media Group Berhad on behalf of The Star Foundation.

THE ROTARY CLUB OF PUTERI LAGOON sets out to provide needy children especially from broken families and single parents hope for a better future through education.

On 20 Jan 2019, 32 primary school in Johor Bahru, Pasir Gudang, Kulai, Ulu Tiram, Gelang Patah, Masai, Kota Tinggi and Kluang received RM5,000 each for their selective needy student, total of 430 needy students benefit out of it. On top of it, each student shall receive a school bag and Bata shoes voucher of RM50.00.

THE ROTARY CLUB OF LUYANG AND ROTARY CLUB OF TANJUNG ARU sent 10 professionals in the following fields to be the competition judges for the Young Innovators Challenge 2018 @ UMS. A total of 130+ teams from 39 secondary schools around Sabah participated at the one day event held on 18 Aug 2018 at UMS Campus. Eight Gold Medals, plus Silver and Bronze Medals were awarded.

We Solve Problems For more than 110 years, we’ve bridged cultures and connected continents to champion peace, fight illiteracy and poverty, promote clean water and sanitation, save mothers and children, grow economies, and prevent disease.

THE ROTARY CLUB OF PANDAN VALLEY collaborated with Radion International to supply clean water to the entire Khek Noi village located in Phetchabun. The village comprised of 17,000 Hmong hilltribe people and a handful of Thai citizens living there.

This is a Global Grant project and other clubs involved are THE ROTARY CLUB OF CHIANGRAI NORTH, ROTARY CLUB OF PENANG and ROTARY CLUB OF JAKARTA METROPOLITAN. Members arrived in Khek Noi village on 25 November 2019 for an opening ceremony of the water treatment plant.

This was followed by a mass food relief distribution and lunch.

THE ROTARY CLUB OF KUCHING UNITY CITY organized a Free Health screening (health check, blood test, eye check, outer ear, middle ear and inner ear check up by qualified practitioners ) on 8 and 9 December 2018 at MedicPlus Health Clinic. Kota Samarahan, Bandar Riyah, 94300 Kuching, Sarawak.

35 participants were screened and overall everyone would have follow-up done for medical, vision and hearing.

We Solve Problems THE ROTARY CLUB OF SINGAPORE Help the Children 2018 Project in Malang and Batu, East Java, Indonesia sets out to help 1277 children with school going necessities.

Help The Children 2018 trip to Malang also witnessed the launch of this Global Grant project which involves purchasing of Speech therapy training equipment and trainers’ training program at Bhakti Luhur orphanage.

THE ROTARY CLUB OF CHANGI’s major service project is to provide financial assistance to Lavalla School Village Farm to build a workshop.

The workshop-cum-training centre is to prepare handicapped children acquire farming skills so that they will be in a better position to stand on their own.

Lavalla School is well-run by the Marist Brothers. The cost of the project amounted close to US$32K. Several of our members including DG Henry Tan flew over to Cambodia to witness the handover.

THE ROTARY CLUB OF LIKAS BAY’s Smile Cambodia project touches lives. Operation Smile provides surgical treatment to children born with cleft lip and cleft palate.

On January 24 2019 this year, members of THE ROTARY CLUB OF KUCHING CENTRAL joined the Smile Cambodia cleft lips project with The Rotary Club of Likas Bay.

THE ROTARY CLUB OF BINTULU Central Community Service for Rural School was jointly organised with ROTARY CLUB OF KUCHING CENTRAL. The “Back to school 2019� project was fully sponsored by Yayasan Sime Darby. SK Sg Genaan is located along side of Sg Genaan, Sebauh, Sarawak, Malaysia. School uniforms were provided for all pupils to help ease the financial burden for parents of these children.

THE ROTARY CLUB OF KOTA KINABALU PEARL members gathered at Dewan Serbaguna Likas to help distribute out disaster relief boxes in addition to other donated items such as Bedding and Towels and much needed clothing to the victims of the Kampung Cenderamata 2 fire that destroyed 150 homes and rendered about 800 homeless.

The Rotary clubs donated dry food items to the recent fire victims while Rotary Club Kinabalu Pearl donated towels and bed linen.

THE ROTARY CLUB OF PENAMPANG was involved with The Royal Malaysia Navy Jiwa Murni program for a blood donation drive.

The club collaborated with hospital Mesra Bukit Padang and IMAGO shopping mall to assist QE1 for this Blood Drive.

We Transform Communities THE ROTARY CLUB OF TAWAU and Lions Club Tawau Central joined hands and successfully completed free Cataract operations for 82 in the Tawau Community from 19 to 21 Oct 2018.

THE ROTARY CLUB OF GARDEN CITY worked with Chen Su Lan Methodist Children’s Home for the Bag to School Project. The majority of children at the home came from families with financial difficulties. Besides providing the children with quality ergonomic schoolbags by Singaporean brand Bromin, we even managed to replace 15 laptops and tablets for these wonderful children.

THE ROTARY CLUB OF PANDAN VALLEY brought the “Health and Wellness Carnival” right to our Citizen’s door step on 1 September 2018, at Teck Ghee Community Club.

This event also served to educate the public on the need for pneumonia vaccinations. Eligible seniors aged 65 and above who are residing in rental blocks or are CHAS card holders were able to sign up for free pneumococcal vaccination. This programme was sponsored by The Rotary Club of Pandan Valley, The Foundation of Rotary Clubs Singapore and a Global Grant from Rotary International.

From weekly meetings and club projects to fund raisers and networking events, our members develop skills that help make them better individuals, community leaders, internationalists, and humanitarians.

THE ROTARY CLUB OF SINGAPORE WEST joined hands with their NUS ROTARACT CLUB in doing good from 10 to 23 December for ProjectCebu2018. Both Rotarians in the club and Rotaractors had fun while doing good – delivering supplies of rice and milk powder to the Mother Teresa Home in slum area.

THE ROTARY CLUB OF MIRI OIL TOWN organized a community event – Movie Day 2018 (We Love Kidz 2.0) on 1 December 2018. 88 students from SK Kuala Baram 2, SLK(C) Tudan and Miri Methodist Children’s Home had an enjoyable time at the cinema.

The club worked with sponsors: Green Summit, MyKafe, TomLing, Dimension Concept, Sukiada Engineering, TGV Cinemas, Jotun Paint, Casamia, Lian Hua, Mesra Jaya, IDeasMakeover and McDonald’s for this project.

THE ROTARY CLUB OF NOVENA has a weekly activity: The WWF – Walk with Friends. Members are encouraged to explore various parts of Singapore every Sunday at 7am and walks are between 5km to 10km. This project serves to promote a healthy lifestyle for Rotarians and friends.

Group bonding and sharing among different nationalities is fostered during this regular club activity as well.

We Transform Ourselves THE ROTARY CLUB OF KLUANG presented the Kluang OCBC-Rotary Run 2018. More than 2000 runners took part in this Charity Run which was dedicated to Yayasan Rotary Kluang Haemodialysis center.

THE ROTARY CLUB OF KULAI organised a free medical camp at SJK (C) Kelapa Sawit. This was done jointly with The National Kidney Foundation with CIMB foundationcommunity link. Members of the Rotary club of Kulai also donated Rm 1,000 ringgit to SJK (C) Kelapa Sawit.

THE ROTARY CLUB OF PASIR GUDANG Eye Foundation manages the Rotary Eye Center of Johor Bahru. The center provides full eye screening free of charge to the public.

The center provides free cataract eye surgeries for the poor.

In addition, the centre also provides eye drops, spectacles for students and senior citizens who are unable to afford.

This was set up with the objective to streamline, expand and efficiently carry out Project Vision on a daily basis over the long term with the goal of reducing blindness in society and providing a ray of hope for the visually handicapped poor.

Fund raisers done this Rotary year include selling mooncakes and a movie premier of the BumbleBee Blockbuster for the Rotary Eye Center.

We Are People of Action For 110 years, our members have poured their passion, integrity and intelligence into completing projects that have a lasting impact.

THE ROTARY CLUB OF JOHOR BAHRU delivered 4 new Water Heaters (donated by Eurostar Tractors (M) Sdn Bhd), a new washing machine (donated by RCJB member Rtn Chew Kong Huat) and 2 bundles of toilet paper (donated by FUDAK) to the Pertubuhan Kebajikan Puspanesam (Puspanesam Home). RCJB member PP Ng Swee Poh (Chairman of Management Committee for Rotary Haemodialysis Centre) paid for the Installation of the 4 Water Heaters and their piping works.

THE ROTARY E-CLUB of 3310 achieved a total of 600 Cataract Eye Surgeries under Gift of Sight Indonesia 2018 program. This was aided through a Global Grant. The eye surgeries were conducted in 6 different locations, namely, Indramayu, Soreang, Ciamis, Subang, Tasikmalaya and Puskemas Tarogong Garut for Gift Of Sight Indonesia 2018. On 21st Feb 2019, an additional cataract surgery for 100 people in Indramayu Sukra was done successfully. We had completed 700 cataract eye surgeries (from original 500) under our Gift of Sight Indonesia 2018’s Global Grant.

Our next target with Gift of Sight Indonesia 2019 is to reach at least 1000 Cataract Eye Surgeries in West Java!

THE ROTARY CLUB OF SINGAPORE has jointly organised with the Association of Small & Medium Enterprises ASME, The Entrepreneur of the Year Awards. 2018 marks the 30th anniversary of this special award.

Entrepreneruship is close to the hearts of many Rotarians. Back in 1988, our Club Rotarians started this award to recognise and celebrate the success achieved by entrepreneurs as well as their efforts in giving back to our community.

THE ROTARY CLUB OF BINTULU had Back To School Project. A total of 17 kindergarten children were presented to receive aid in the form of school bags and other study materials to be financed under the club’s Rotary-Tiong Sie Chai Memorial Fund.

THE ROTARY CLUB OF BELAIT joined THE ROTARY CLUB OF MIRI 10th Medical Mission. This involved driving from Miri to Limbang Kampung Bidang from 12 to 14 October 2018.

By PP Khushroo Dastur Chair, District 3310 Membership Attraction and Engagement Committee My sojourn as District Membership Chair comes to an end on June 30, 2019.

It has been 3 wonderful years – challenging and exciting. Met so many Rotarians across the District, visited cities in Malaysia that I had never heard of and conducted tens of Membership Seminar and Dialogues… enjoyed every minute of it.

The power of any Rotary club is reflected in its membership. As such building membership is a top priority both at the RI level as well as with the District. New membership brings fresh vitality, new ideas and a fresh bout of energy. At the RI level, membership has been rather stagnant at approx.

1.2 million for the past 10 years. To that extent our District has done well. In the past 6 years we have had steady annual growth except for one year when we turned in negative results.

Over the past three years, the District Membership Committee introduced a number of new initiatives to build up membership. When we started visiting clubs, we were very surprised to see the manner in which new members were inducted by club Presidents. Some had their own write ups and Pledges and others had a sloppy process. One of my first jobs was to introduce a Standard Induction Program for all clubs. The District Membership Committee also believed that it was important for the Presidents to understand how the members view their club… to get a feel for the issues and strengths of the club. With that in mind we introduced Membership Satisfaction Survey so Club Presidents could gather input from the members. Also, we have always counted on our members to build our membership and we needed to incentivise them.

So to encourage members to bring in new Rotarians we introduced the Member Bring Member program to recognise members with Blue, Silver and Gold sponsor pins for bringing in new members. We have been distributing these sponsor pins at various District events and these will be also be distributed at this year’s District Conference. I expect a number of members will collect their Gold Sponsor Pins for bringing in 7 or more members.

We also redesigned and conducted many Membership Seminars/Dialogues in group clusters across the District to understand and address membership concerns related to their clubs. Each club is unique and has distinctive issues.

For a small District we have achieved significant milestones that we can be very proud of. The past three years we have placed a lot of emphasis on attracting

younger members. Today I am delighted to state that District 3310 has the distinction of having the largest percentage of young members when compared to the Zone or even at Rotary International (RI) level. It has grown gradually (see Chart 1) and today 13% of our members are under 40 years of age compared to just 6% globally. Also, our efforts to bring in female members is paying off and we have succeeded in building our female membership to 21% (see Chart 2)… however, we are still behind the Global result of 23%.

District 3310’s Retention last Rotary Year was 89.35%, the best in Zone 6B and better than the average retention rate of 82.07% at Zone 6B. Some of our clubs have made conscious efforts to build up membership and have done exceedingly well. Rotary E-Club of 3310 went from having 17 members to 43 members in just 3 years from 1 July 2016 to 31 March 2019. Same for Rotary Club of Garden City which went from 42 to 61, Rotary Club of Tawau from 28 to 43, Rotary Club of Singapore from 147 to 161 and Rotary Club of Pasir Gudang from 22 to 34. Incredible efforts put in by the Presidents as well as the members of these clubs!

Individual Rotarians have also contributed a lot. During this 3-year

period we have 7 members who have earned the Gold Sponsor Pin for bringing in 7 members or more with IPP Sean Tay from Rotary Club of Garden City topping the list with 11 members. We also have PE Sean Yeo (Rotary Club of Garden City) and CP Chew Ban Seng (Rotary E-Club of 3310) sponsoring 10 members each. The other Gold Pin awardees are AG Shirin Ghadiali (Rotary E-Club of 3310), PP Derek Cheah (Rotary Club of Johor Bahru Sentral) and PP Foo Kok Hing (Rotary Club of Batu Pahat) with 8 members each, and rotarian Rachel Wong (Sentosa) with 7 members. Great achievements and major contribution to our membership Growth! Congratulations to all the Gold Sponsor Pin awardees! We still have 2 months to the end of Rotary Year 2018-19 and I am sure we will get a few more Gold Sponsor Pin winners.

This year, until Mar 31st 2019 we have inducted 131 new members, taking our membership count to 2078 and number of Clubs to 71. We are confident of chartering one new club in May this year and possibly another one or maybe even two new clubs before the end of this Rotary Year. With 3 new clubs, that should bring in another 50 to 70 new members.

I am hoping that we can close the year with 2130 members.

Also, my sincere thanks to the various District Membership Committee members and Committee Advisers over the three years, who have helped me with the numerous group cluster Membership Seminars/ Dialogues across the various regions in the district.

The Rotary Public Image can only be strong with every Rotarian doing their part to promote Rotary. Rotary International has worked hard to build the Rotary brand and their effort to roll out an international brand campaign Rotary People of Action had been put to good use in our District as clubs used the tool and templates provided to tell their People of Action story.

In Singapore, we engaged the largest media group Singapore Press Holdings to run the entire campaign in both the English and Chinese newspapers, online and at digital outdoor sites. This campaign achieved a 98% reach of all adults aged 15+ in Singapore.

We Are In The News Other than the international campaign from Rotary International, Clubs adapted from the People of Action campaign to advertise their projects. The Rotary Club of Pandan Valley publicised their Health Talk and Pneumonia Vaccination Project and a Battle of the Bands fund raiser for underprivileged kids entitled Rotary Rocks. The Rotary Club of Garden City did it for their community project entitled Stepping Out for Stroke. What must have been a historical first is for all 23 clubs in Singapore to jointly collaborate in this for World Polio Day and a series of ads for Rotary Day on 23 February 2019.

We Are In The News Over in Brunei, Johor, Malacca, Sarawak, Labuan FT and Sabah we were in the news for numerous projects. For instance The Rotary Club of Miri was in the news for their medical mission at Kampung Bidang Limbang. The Rotary Club of Sandakan North was also in the news for sending a total of 18 Interact Club members from four secondary school to a one week training programme on Sustainability Agriculture Management in Oil Palm Plantations. We also received tremendous media coverage over activities done in Brunei, Johor, Sarawak and Sabah.

Rotary Day In District 3310

By DGSR Joanne Kam, assisted by PE Larry Ong, Rotary Club of Kuching for Borneo Together, we see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change - across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves.

In an effort to increase membership and highlight Rotary’s inspiring work, Rotary International President Barry Rassin urged clubs and districts to organize fun, informal community events called Rotary Days. This event offered clubs a chance to have an impact on the community, build long term partnerships, increase interest in membership, and improve Rotary’s image.

On 23 February 2019, Rotarians from District 3310 with total of 71 rotary clubs comprising of 23 clubs in Singapore, 2 in Brunei, 20 in Johor and Malacca, 12 clubs in Sarawak and Labuan FT, 14 in Sabah celebrated our shared vision for peace and humanitarian activities. This was also World Understanding and Peace Day where Rotarians worldwide celebrated Rotary International 114th anniversary.

District Governor Henry Tan tasked DGSR (District Governor Special Representative) PP Joanne Kam to drive the Rotary Day events in Singapore and Johor & Malacca whilst DGSR PP Dr John Chan took care of the Rotary Day events in Borneo and coordinated the live screening throughout the district on Facebook.

Rotaract Club of North West, Rotaract Club of SMU, Rotaract Club of Singapore East and Interact Club of Yishun Junior College participated actively in the Rotary Family Day as well together with their sponsor clubs.

Our Guest of Honour, Ms Denise Phua, Mayor of Central Singapore Community Development Council and her spouse Roland joined us together with our District Governor Henry Tan and District First Lady Ellen to walk through the booths and delivered her address.

We started setting up from 8am and ended at 2pm, in a day filled with activities, including zumba dance, international and cultural understanding, health screening including blood sugar check, stroke prevention and blood pressure check, distribution of FIT kit, TCM health checks, health talks, literacy and game booths, magic show and balloon sculpting, Harley Davidson photo booth, Rotary Family Service Centre showcase, Rotary projects showcase such as Gift of Sight, Crohn’s & Colitis, Book of Humour, wheel chair servicing, bread distribution, Love Our Mother Earth

Rotary Rocks – Rotary Club of Pandan Valley

What a show! Fantastic turnout and huge support at the Battle of bands: bands comprising of lawyers (The Illegals), doctors, architects, valuers demonstrated their talents and raised funds for a good cause! This event was organized by the Rotary Club of Pandan Valley as part of Rotary Day activities in Singapore. Funds raised wentd towards Tasek Jurong to support the socially disadvantaged, who include, but are not limited to, ex-inmates, youth at risk, single parents, the needy and disabled and their families. The younger generation posted the event on Facebook, it was great exposure for Rotary and served to attract the young and fun people to connect with us.

Conversations by the Interact Coordinating Committee – Rotary Club of Singapore

The Interact Coordinating Committee led by Rotary Club of Singapore’s Youth Director Dr Hoh Sek Tian, organised “Conversations”. This was an excellent opportunity for our interactors to hear advocates from Waterways Watch Society, Food Bank, World Toilet organisation, Club Heal, ACRES, World Vision, Singapore Repertory, Innovation Centre and Mr Josephus Tan. Advocates spoke about their passion and their cause which was very inspiring for our interactors.

“Yumcha” with the Elderly – Rotary Club of Marina City

Rotarians from Rotary Club of Marina City organized a “Yumcha” afternoon with the elderly at St. Hilda’s Community Centre.

They entertained the elderly with songs, dance, games and good food. The beneficiaries are 90 elderly residents from low income HDB rental flats in Kampong Arang.

World Understanding and Peace Day Dinner

Rotary Clubs in Singapore continued its tradition to organize and celebrate

Rotary’s 114th Anniversary with the World Understanding and Peace Day Dinner held at Holiday Inn Singapore Atrium. Almost 200 rotarians and family members plus some rotaractors were present to engage with District Governor Henry Tan who delivered an inspiring opening address.

The Guest of Honour was Her Excellency Barbara Plinkert, Ambassador of the Delegation of European Union to Singapore and her address was on the topic of “Linking Continents, Regions and People: the EU-ASEAN Partnership”.

Everyone enjoyed the evening with live entertainment by Robert Fernando and there was also live screening of Rotary Day celebrations in other regions. The evening ended with a finale of all singing “Heal the World” together.

Joint Rotary branding by all Singapore Clubs

All 23 Rotary Clubs in Singapore contributed towards an advertisement campaign in The Straits Times and LianHe Zaobao before and after Rotary Day to publicise Rotary activities and increase awareness of what Rotary does in our community. Events were also streamed live on Facebook to connect with other clubs in our District.

Organizer and participating clubs: Rotary Club of Puteri Lagoon (Johor Bahru), Rotary Club of Muar, Rotary Club of Pasir Gudang with Rotary Satellite Club of Pasir Gudang Mandarin, Rotary Club of Kluang, Rotary Club of Mersing, Rotary Club of Malacca, Rotary Club of Kota Melaka Rotary Clubs from Johor and Malacca joined hands for Rotary Day celebration on Saturday 23 February 2019 from 9:45 am to 17:00 pm where they brought 85 underprivileged children spending a fun and enjoyable day at LEGOLAND Malaysia.

Many teachers, caretakers and rotarians participated in the outing. It was great joy to have made it a memorable day for the young underprivileged children.

Rotary 114th Anniversay Dinner in Johor Bahru

Rotary Clubs in Johor gathered together in the evening to celebrate Rotary’s 114th Anniversary. There was entertainment with Elvis Presley impersonation by Rotary Club of Johor Bahru, painting auction by Rotary Club of Johor Straits View as well as live screening of evening events around District 3310.

Rotary Day in Johor & Malacca (Club Projects) Family Day at Port Dickson – Rotary Club of Batu Pahat

Rotary Club of Batu Pahat had a Rotary Family Day outing to Port Dickson. It was a very meaningful event with an entourage of 78 people consisting of rotarians, family members together with staff and patients from the Batu Pahat Rotary Haemodialysis Centre.

Rotary Day In District 3310 Bursary Award Presentations – Rotary Club of Mersing

Rotary Club of Mersing celebrated Rotary Day with bursary award presentations to needy students from four primary and secondary schools: Pai Chee Secondary School, Pai Chee Primary School, Endau Kampung Hubong Secondary School and Endau Kampung Hubong Primary School.

Tree Planting – Rotary Club of Muar

Tree planting is one of the key projects that Rotary Club of Muar undertakes every year. This year on 23 February 2019, in conjunction with Rotary Day and Rotary’s 114th anniversary celebration, Rotary Club of Muar jointly with Micron (M) Sdn Bhd Muar planted 200 Mangrove saplings supported by Johor Forestry Department.

A total of 216 Mangrove Sapling were planted on the seaside of Pantai Parit Penyengat, Parit Jawa, Muar, Johor by approximately 200 volunteers from Micron, Rotary Club of Muar, Rotaract Club of Asia Metropolitan University, Johor Forestry Department, SWCorp, SWM and Majlis Perbandaran Muar. At the same time, the surrounding beach area was cleaned of plastic and other debris.

Rotary Club of Pontian organized a lunch outing at KFC in Pontian with the trainees and young & special friends from Pontian Down’s Syndrome Centre for Rotary Day celebration. Rotary Club of Pontian adopted the Pontian Down’s Syndrome Centre 25 years ago.

Rotary Day “Health Awareness and Safety Campaign” – Rotary Club of Tawau & Rotary Club of Tawau Tanjung

On 23rd February 2019, starting from 9am till 1pm, a joint event was organized

by Rotary Club of Tawau and Rotary Club of Tawau Tanjung for the Rotary Day “Health Awareness and Safety Campaign” at Majlis Perbandaran Tawau (MPT) VIP car park.

This event was in collaboration with MPT, Ministry of Health, Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia, Hospital Tawau Blood Bank, Kinabalu Pink Ribbon and Hap Seng Properties Development Sdn Bhd. The guest of honor for the event was Yang Berbahagia Tuan Alijus @ Mohd Ali Haji Sipil who declared the opening of the Rotary Health Awareness and Safety Campaign.

In Kota Kinabalu, World Understanding Day Bazaar was held at Suria Shopping Mall, where 9 Rotary Clubs showcased food and culture of different countries all over the world. The Guest of Honor was Datuk Christina Liew, the Deputy Chief Minister of Sabah. The event attracted a large number of public participants and boosted the image of Rotary on how they can benefit the community.

Health screening and exhibition – Rotary Club of Kuching, Rotary Club of Kuching Central, Rotary Club of Kuching Unity City, Rotary Club of Kuching South, Rotary Club of Kuching Jaya.

The five Rotary clubs in Kuching organised a health screening session for the public at City One Mall in Kuching, Sarawak. The event was officiated by Minister of Ministry Local Government and Housing, Prof Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian witnessed by all the five club presidents. An exhibition booth was also created to display all the different community service by the different Rotary clubs.

“Family sandwich competition” – Rotary Club of Bandar Seri Begawan

The Rotary Day event was held on 23rd February 2019 at SMK Chung Hua Miri with the collaboration of Rotary Club of Bandar Seri Begawan and Rotary Club of Miri Oil Town. The Guest of Honor of the event was DGE.Jeff Yong and invited guest was YB Datuk Sebastian Ting. The theme of the event was “Family sandwich competition”, where Rotarians connected with the public to let them know more about Rotary. This event attracted a total number of 20 students with families and 52 kids under the “We love Kidz” group.

Kids and family members participated in making the best sandwich decoration.

The Rotary Club of Miri in Sarawak together with Rotary Club of Belait in Brunei Darussalam held a joint Rotary Day event at Pustaka Negeri Sarawak, Miri that also served to commemorate Rotary International’s 114th Anniversary. Led by Organizing Chair Rotarian Suzanna Abdullah and the organizing committee, they joined Rotary Clubs in District 3310 through facebook live and around the world. Their aim was to promote and create awareness of Rotary’s existence and our Club’s service to our respective local community.

Rotary Club of Tawau Tanjung Facebook post with interactors Khaspermata Wood Mill Visit on 27/10/2018 (Saturday) Joint Project between Youth Service & Vocational Service has achieved a number of 31 Interact Club Students participated in this event with the guidance of teacher advisory, Stanley and also 10 rotary members.

The purpose of this trip is to improve Interactor’s knowledge regarding the process of turning trees into lumbers and become plywood as an end product.

Furthermore, this mill has the latest technology of turning the waste product of wood chips into a new form of renewable energy.

ACSI Independent Interact Club This year, Interactors celebrated National Day with the elderly from the nearby Dover Community, bringing laughter and joy to them on this day of festivities and celebration. Bonds between the Dover community elderlies and Interactors were forged, and the memories created deepened the relationship between the two. The event started with the elderly watching the parade with the Interactors, followed by a meal. Next, we played a quiz on facts about Singapore, which the elderly enjoyed as they reminisced about the early days of our growing nation. Prizes, which were soaps made by the Interactors, were also given out.

After which, we had a time of fellowship as we sang National Day songs and other Singaporean songs. Finally, Interactors put up a performance to the song “Singapore Town” for the elderly.

Interact Club of Convent Secondary School, Muar Let us review back to the project that the Interactors of SMK Convent Muar have done last weekend.

“Interactors Care” is the name for this project. Why this name you ask? It is to encourage people in the world to care more and love more towards the people around us especially those who truly need our helping hand, just like what the Interactors did during the project.

The Interactors have helped up an Indian poor family whose baby has health issues, to clean up their house and buying some supplies for the baby such as diapers and baby powder. We are very happy and proud to say that through this project, the Interactors have learnt to be a more caring person and everyone is starting to be more elert to help up the people who needs help in the society. So, why not you too start to care more and love more to the people around us. Together we make a change.

Interact Club of St Andrew’s Secondary, Muar

On 16 of November, the members of Interact Club and of La Salle Club of Saint Andrew Secondary Muar had organised a motivation camp at Seu Teck Sean Tong Charitable Organization.

This is the first joint project between Interact Club and La Salle Club. There were around 60 participants from the other schools and the whole project were conducted by 15 facilitators from both clubs. The interactors involved were Int. Lee Zi Xian, Int. Gan Jing Heng, Int. Bay Jing Wei, Int. See Xun and Int. Yeo Kiat Ming.

The aim of this motivation camp is to motivate the participants to show positive moral values to the community. This project is also held to create a wonderful atmosphere for the children who has been emotionally depressed to release their pent-up stress after a year of tiring learning process. On that day, we carried out a lot of activities such as games, dancing performances and dramas. All the participants enjoyed the activities very much, judging from their laughter and big smile on their faces.

Throughout these activities, we believed that the participants have been motivated to show a good example to their friends.

Lastly, congratulation and thanks to the five interactors who paid a lot of efforts in this motivational camp. Hope that Interact Club and La Salle Club of Saint Andrew Secondary Muar can organise more joint projects in future to benefit the community at a larger scale.

A long serving Interactor who became a President Scholar in Singapore At a Chinese New Year event his school hosted for senior citizens when he was 13, Alden Tan Ming Yang said, “See you next year!” when bidding goodbye to one of the participants.

The woman quipped: “Can we see you tomorrow?”

The casual remark made the Secondary One student at Raffles Institution think hard about community service.

He went on to join the Interact Club for the next six years, leading fellow students on visits to befriend seniors living alone in rental flats and mentoring underprivileged children.
