AUGUST IS MEMBERSHIP MONTH August is membership month for Rotary and the organization worldwide has suffered from decline in membership numbers. It is noteworthy from trends presented at the District membership seminar on 30th August 2014 that membership numbers increased typically at the close of each Rotary year to decline immediate the next year. Besides the challenges of attracting new members, this trend reflects the issue of membership retention in Rotary. It calls upon the need for all of us to look at ways to attract new members as this would enhance our ability to better serve the community. We are happy to see members bringing in guests to our club lunches. We hope through such connections we are able to get some of them to be a part of us as well. In August we had a good line-up of speakers. Media Personality, Wong Li-Lin delivered her Lifestyle fitness talk with charm and got members laughing their hearts out as she demonstrated fitness tips to PP Leonard Loo and PP Peter Yap. George Joseph, a previous member of the Rotary Club of Pandan Valley returned to share his take on social media, its disruption on traditional communications and the loss of high touch face to face interactions. On week 3, we had Jerry Siah, producer of A Nation in Concert – A wetlands adventure unveil this signature project that would be presented by our club for the community on 8 November this year. Last but not least was Neo Ban Huat of EVHub who explained the challenges of electric vehicles in our market and technological innovations through a super capacitator that delivers in 10 to 15 mins per charge of 600km. During the talk, he gave the analogy that a hybrid car is akin to a mermaid‌ so I am suitably amused by the funny image of driving my mermaid car.
