15th anniversary at northbrooks Following the glass painting engagement with Northbrooks Secondary, PP Michael Loh, PP Benedict Soh, IPP/AG Mohan and President Elsie attended their Annual Speech and Prize Giving Day on 10 April 2015 and are thrilled to find the completed painted glass pieced together on a glass showcase that looks out to the central courtyard from the main office and school block. Students in Northbrooks performed skits, dance and instrumental pieces besides awarding their top students with prizes. The Rotary Club of Pandan Valley is indeed happy to have sponsored their interact club since February 2009, a relationship that has since been forged for more than 6 years now.

Speakers corner Pastor Don, Executive Director of Charis Mission came to speak at our club on April 10 to share how this non-profit organization was set up and the numerous programmes offered to rehabilitation of ex-drug offenders and preventive work targeted at youths-at-risk in schools and juvenile homes. Indeed one of the slides showcased ex-convicts like robber, murderer, drug trafficker, drug abuser, housebreaker and gang member who has since become counselor, trainer, mentor: Ambassodors of Hope.

The next week on April 17, we had Dr James Teh, founder and CEO of T.Ware sharing with club members the T-Jacket. This is the world’s first smart pressure vest that produce hug-like sensations, empowering people to function better. T is for touch technology and by controlling the pressure from an app it applied air pressure to calm, comfort and soothe the nerves of anyone who is stressed or anxious.

District conference april 30 to 3 May 2015 The 24th Rotary International District Conference was held in Kuching Sarawak, Malaysia from 1 to 3 May this year. 9 members represented RCPV for this trip plus a Rotaractor, President Adi from SUTD Rotaract Club. The host and organizing club was RC of Kuching Central and their hospitality was superb with engaged members taking turns to meet, greet and handle hotel transfers of Rotarians from all over attending the event.

Rotarians did an End Polio walk on 1 May morning to raise awareness and giving for polio immunisation programs for the last 1% of children in countries that's still inflicted with this virus, namely Afghanistan, Nigeria and Pakistan.

Working with UNICEF, WHO, Rotary has contributed US$600m and countless volunteer hours to help immunise more than 2 billion children against the crippling and often fatal disease. Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has awarded Rotary US355m in its support to eradicate polio.

Rotary in turn committed to raise US$200m by 30th June 2012 and this had been achieved. Polio cases have declined rapidly since 1985 but the fight isn't over. To-date $12b had been contributed to End Polio. 350 cases were recorded in 2014 but the bulk of 300 is in Pakistan. Rotary had raised $1b, the USA government $2b, Bill Gates $1b, The UK government $1b and Others $7b. It is expected that more than 10m children under the age of five could be paralyzed by polio in the next 40 years if the eradication is not carried out fully. We are really this close in ending this and Rotary is committed to finish this fight.
