Glass painting for northbrooks Northbrooks Secondary, our partner for the Interact programme was about to celebrate their 15th anniversary on April 10, 2015. As part of the school preparation for this, they engaged with partners to participate in their Glass painting project. 5 of our members, President Elsie, President Elect Judy Loh, PP Benedict Soh, PP Michael Loh and Rtn Anil Changaroth headed to Northbrooks for a short lesson in glass painting before embarking on doing pieces of art that will be hung at an open space outside the corridor.

CLUB ASSEMBLY AT THE NUSS SUNTEC GUILD HOUSE The third club assembly was held on 13 March at the Suntec Guild House. The spouse program planned was meant to give shopping time but as it turned out spouses were so engaged that they decided to stay in the club and listened to matters arising over the last 3 months. As the bulk of major projects had been completed by March 2015, the reports were mainly post mortems of media coverage that we had obtained from the projects last year. Our Youth service track was represented by our dynamic team of Rotaractors at SUTD. President Aditya gave a comprehensive run through of projects that they had initiated from enrichment lessons given during their international service in Laos to their assistance in constructing a primary school there. The Rotaract Club of SUTD had also been engaged in local community service, promoting volunteering services with Project Love and working with MealswithmyParents promoting youths to spend more time with their parents.

The club treasurer updated all members that the net surplus to-date amounted to $1812.40 after provisions of funds set aside for future Rotary Rocks CD of $4150 and Clean Drinking Water projects of $850.

Speakers corner Barbara Riedjik, the founder of Kaka Club comprising of a team of young professionals doing events shared their plans for the Singapore Fashion Challenge during club lunch on March 8. Their main vision is to create a 2 day fashion event to create a platform where fresh young designers can get exposure, network, tips and tricks from industry experts ( our judges). The designers will get picked to showcase their work. She planned to pair the event with a way to give back to the community and as such would be supporting 3 charities of our choice as part of a Rotary project. The charity donations will come from the ticket fees at the door of the event. The guests will have to pay $15/$20 per ticket of which a large percentage will go the the charity that they will feel most connected with.

On March 27, Vice President presided at the club lunch as President Elsie and a few other members headed to attended District assembly and PETS training in Johor Bahru. That week, we had Hariharan, CEO of Third Wave Power sharing with club members his portable solar power chargers and the social impact that it has geneated in our life. Hariharan brings more than 20 years of experience from the information technology industry. In Hewlett-Packard Company and Wipro Infotech, he was in general management roles as well as senior positions in sales and marketing.

District activities and Joint president meetings Rotary Crosstalk was held on 14 March and attended by Club Presidents and District officers.

Topic was about Women in Rotary and DG Andre Suharto led in the discussions.

The 24th PETS (President Elects Training and Seminar) and District Assembly was held from 26 to 29 March 2015 at the KSL Hotel and Resort Johor Bahru.

Event was well attended by representatives of all 62 clubs in the District. For RCPV, besides PE Judy Loh, IPP Mohan, PP Cynthia Tan, PP Pang Boon Seng and President Elsie Chua who attended the workshops and conference, PP Benedict Soh & spouse Rose, PP Eric Lee, PP Jeffrey Seow and Rtn Anil Changaroth joined in for the governor’s banquet on the 28th of March.

In honor of the honorary Rotarian mr lee kuan yew (member of The rotary club of Singapore since RY1962-1963 Mr Lee Kuan then Prime Minister of Singapore made his address at The Rotary District Conference in 1966 organised by the Rotary Club of Singapore. See the grandeur of the head table in those days!

He was greeted here by PP Walter Rintoul (1964-1965) and PP Ee Peng Liang (1963-1964)

Over at The Rotary Club of Pandan Valley, we had the privilege of organizing the Inter-City Meeting for Rotary International President visit to Singapore during PP Choe Peng Sum’s year of leadership RY 2008-2009. It was at this event that Mr Lee Kuan Yew then Singapore’s Minister Mentor was conferred The Rotary International Award of Honor. Event was covered in The Straits Times (see inset) . Photos showed Mr Lee Kuan Yew being greeted by PP Choe Peng Sum and PP Pang Boon Seng.

ROTARIANS PAYING RESPECTS TO THE LATE MR LEE KUAN YEW AT THE PARLIAMENT HOUSE ON 25 MARCH 2015 123 Rotarians, friends and family members rushed down on 25 March to gather at Funan Shopping Centre to pay respects to Our founding father Lee Kuan Yew at the Parliament House. Joint Presidents were planning to do it after a scheduled Joint Presidents Meeting at Chinatown point at 7.30pm but in a flurry of emails and messages around noon we were informed of a 3pm time slot allotted to The Rotary Club of Singapore in response to their written request.

Despite the very late notification, Rotarians decked up in their regalia and pins and lined up for an hour to pay respects to this great man who exemplies all of Rotary values and motto of “Service Above Self”.
