El Jardín Santuario experienced a second incident of vandalism less than a month after the welcome sign was spray painted with hate speech in late July. On Aug. 13 corn stalks were cut down prematurely and left for the volunteers to discover early that morning. Brenda Peréz, director of Centro del Pueblo, explained how she felt when she came across the vandalized state of El Jardín.“Ifelt very sad. I felt very disappointed. I felt like the work that Centro del Pueblo is doing is being threatened. Our work is not just cultural, it’s political,” Peréz said. “So for me the corn is a sacred ancestral symbol. It represents creation, so when they cut the corn it hurt me from my country to here.” The most recent attack on the garden has solidified workers’ and volunteers' insecuri ty regarding their safety while at El Jardín Santuario. Magaly Cervantes, community organizer for Centro del Pueblo, voiced her concerns for the master gardener Adan Cer vantes, who works to cultivate and harvest crops at the garden. “[Adan] Cervantes, the one who is in charge here at the garden, sometimes he is alone,” Cervantes said. “So we want more activity in the garden so that they see that Adan is not alone and to avoid another type of attack.”

On April 18, USA Today released an article detailing a Title IX case against Cal Poly Humboldt Professor John Lee. An investigation found that Lee had groped and attempted to focibly kiss two female colleagues in 2016. The case led to Lee be ing fired from his position as the Dean of the College of Professions, only for him to be rehired with maximum pay and tenure six months later using his retreat rights. In spring 2022, John Lee was teach ing two LSEE 308 classes, two LSEE 319 classes, a LSEE 453 Senior Seminar 1 and an activity course. After the story broke, students who felt uncomfortable and unsafe did not show up to class in protest about John Lee still teaching that semester. In El Leñador Vol. 18 Edition 4, the article “Cal Poly Humboldt Title IX case makes students uncomfortable,” by Victoria Olsen, students expressed a lack of trust with administration because of the lack of transparency regarding Lee's conduct. Where is John Lee in Fall 2022? John Lee was scheduled to teach LSEE 317, LSEE 318 and LSEE 723 but according to the Office of the Registrar he is currently not teaching those courses or any courses this semester. These courses are being taught by Professor Heather Ballinger and Julie Van Sickle. According to Libby R. Miller, Chair of the School of Education, John Lee will be teaching next semester. This decision was made by the PROVOST and dean at the College of Professions as a result of the USA Today article. In a speech to returning faculty at the fall 2022 welcome event, President Jack son addressed the topic of Title XI. He said, “We’re a campus filled with secrets and I want you to know that.” In addition he said, “[Tile XI] was designed to be private, confidential to solve a problem be tween individuals not meant to be public andElscrutinized.”Leñadorreached out to Shawnda Young, current chair of College of Pro fessions, and PROVOST. On July 21, the first hate crime vandal ism occurred, which left the welcome sign of El Jardín Santuario spray painted black with large red letters reading “America USA” on top. Both vandalism incidents are still under active investigation. El Jardín Santuario is under extra patrol by the Arcata Police De partment, according to Detective Sergeant Chris“WeOrtega.want our community members to feel safe and we want them to know that the Arcata Police Department takes hate crimes and hate incidents seriously,” Sgt. Ortega said. “We investigate hate crimes with the goal of arrest and prosecution when we are able to identify the perpetrator.” Moving forward, Centro del Pueblo encourages more community involvement to keep the garden as the sanctuary safe space it has always been. Tobin McKee from Cooperation Humboldt helped facilitate a brain storming discussion of how to make the garden more safe on Aug. 27 at El Jardín Santuario. Safety at the Comfort Inn
The inn recently installed a perimeter fencing around the property that is key card accessed by residents and em ployees only. The camera surveillance system, University Police and hotel staff patrol the property regularly, providing a 24-hour help desk service. Addition ally, two Cal Poly Humboldt Resident Assistants stay at the Comfort Inn.
Transportation The Comfort Inn is located about a seven minute drive from campus, a little more than two miles away. Comfort Inn residents have to rely on public transpor tation or ride sharing applications to get around. A shuttle service is in the works of being implemented by the university. “I believe the shuttle service is being worked on and should be posted soon, this is in addition to the public bus ser vice...Cal Poly Humboldt will offer shut tle service for an extra convenience for the residents,” said Stephen St. Onge, associate vice president of student suc cess, in an email to El Leñador. There is no word on when that ser vice will be fully offered or how much it would cost for residents to use. More information on the shuttle service will be released in the future, according to St. Onge.

According to the housing website, staying at the Comfort Inn saves you $1,326 per year on traditional housing rates for a double. Overall, Mendez Garcia and other residents believe it has not been a sorry experience since their time staying at the Comfort Inn. Many are just grateful they have a place to their name and are not “hounding” for a place to stay weeks already into the school year.

“I feel like it's calmer over here,” said Mendez Garcia. “I'm from Oakland, I haven’t felt unsafe or anything. But I do carry around my pepper spray for sure.”
by Frank Rocha Cal Poly Humboldt housing department has contracted with the Comfort Inn off-campus to provide more housing options for students. This plan is being implemented as a temporary solution to the impacted housing crisis Humboldt County has been experiencing. After receiving the newsletter email sent by housing, Comfort Inn resident Gabriela “Gaby” Mendez Garcia jumped at the chance for any available housing right before the fall semester began.“What made me decide [the Com fort Inn], it was really last minute. As long as I find housing at this point. I'm grateful for it,” Mendez Garcia said. Two weeks into the fall semester, stu dents are still trying to find housing on or off-campus. Residencies are filling up quickly, according to the Comfort Inn on Sept. 4, there are only three rooms available out of 49. The rooms offered at the inn are exclusively for upperclass men students. Room amenities Residents can expect regular hotel room amenities as well as free maid service, an indoor pool, a modest ly-sized gym, limited free parking and complimentary continental breakfast every morning from 6:30 a.m. - 9:30 a.m. Mendez Garcia believes there is plenty of food to go around and is glad to get a complimentary breakfast every morning.“It’skind of like the J here on cam pus, but a little less (items available),” Mendez Garcia said. “You can get as much as you want during breakfast. I’am okay with it.”

Terrence Mcnally, Emergency Pre paredness Program Coordinator at Hum boldt County Department of Human and Health Services, communicated with us through email on September 6, saying, “The boosters received state approv al this morning and Humboldt County distribution is being coordinated. Public Health will receive boosters in coming days. We’ll announce when Public Health clinics will begin administering the new bivalent boosters as well as walk-in clinic times and locations. The boosters will be available for the general public.” If you have COVID-19 On August 11, the CDC sent out a new set of COVID-19 guidelines on what to do if tested positive. As of Sept. 2, COVID.gov will stop sending COVID-19 rapid tests to homes. Humboldt County Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) has re portedly ordered nearly 550 doses of the Jynneos Monkeypox vaccine. The Jynneos vaccine is the primary vaccine being used within the U.S. to prevent the spread of the disease. Earlier this month the DHHS received 100 doses of the vaccine and are currently authorizing health care providers to start vaccinating anyone who falls un der the high risk category for Monkeypox.

On campus update On Aug. 30, Cal Poly Humboldt sent out an email to students regarding the Monkeypox outbreak. The email urged students who may have been exposed or are feeling symptomatic to reach out to the Student Health and Wellbeing Ser vices. The administration also encourages students who fall into the high risk cate gory to contact the Student Health Center for an assessment and guidance on how to obtain a vaccine. The only reported case of Monkeypox in Humboldt County was Aug. 5. At the time of writing this article, Humboldt County has no new reported cases.On Aug. 9, the Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced an emergency approval for health care providers to intradermally administer onefifth of the Jynneos vaccine. According to the FDA this can increase the amount of available vaccines by five-fold. If you are at high risk for Monkeypox contact your healthcare provider in order to receive a vaccine.Todate, there has been one reported death in the U.S from Monkeypox on Aug. 30 in Texas. “I remember being pulled over twice in one day, two separate times four or five hours apart when I was growing up and then I internalized this— thinking that this is just the way it is,” Mónico said. “You don't ques tion it. You just think that this is how it is growing up in LA. When I finally went back to school, I went back to LA community college and then I transferred to UC Berke ley as an undergrad. I was a nontraditional student. I was in my thirties and then, it was very serendipitous, I met a lot of people from communities that were hyper policed and that had spent long times in prison.” Mónico has a doctorate in compara tive enthnic studies from the University of Colorado Boulder with an emphasis in critical race theory and carceral studies.
Roberto Mónico is a new assistant professor this fall in the Department of Critical Race, Gender and Sexuality Studies at Cal Poly Humboldt. He is one of many recently hired faculty and has been teaching for the past four years. This semester he’s teaching ES 105: Intro to U.S. Ethnic Studies and CRGS 390: Theories and Methods. Next spring he will be teaching ES 105 again and ES 308: Multi-Ethnic Resistance (U.S.). Mónico was born and raised in Los Angeles and is the youngest of four in a Salvadoran family. He grew up as a teenager in West Hollywood during a time period of subcultures and heightened policing.
Mónico’s research specifically focuses on the criminalization of African Americans and people of Mexican descent from the LAPD during the 1950s-60s. He also looks at how the prison industrial complex affects Black and Brown communities as a whole, not just the inmates but also their families. “Liberty in the sense of trying to discover where one’s place was at the height of graffiti was taking off, hip hop had just exploded—- coupled with the heightened police,” Mónico said. That is how Móni co described growing up in LA during a time period of high policing. Growing up experiencing hyper policing and then going to college and meeting other people who had been hyperpolicied or had been formerly incarcerated led Mónico to researching this topic. ADPIC seeks staffing for cultural center by Peyton Leone Laughter and paper lanterns hung in the hallway outside of Cal Poly Humboldt's newest cultural center, Asian, Desi, and Pacific Islander Collective Students sat in chairs around the room and played a drawing game on their phones and tablets. ADPIC lead Alyssa Huynh sat at the welcome desk and greeted people as they entered, encouraging them to join in the communal game. Huynh explained that the group start ed as a club with weekly meetings. They want to preserve the original community feeling into the cultural center and provide that space to more students. "We still meet weekly and we do meet ings like this,"Huynh said. "So that you can socialize with people." Currently ADPIC is all student-run and because of this it is only open on Fridays from 2 - 3 p.m. in Nelson Hall East 215 and 216. They are working to hire permanent staff so that the center can expand its hours.

“The government knows what Pell Grant you took out. The government knows how much loan you took out, and the government through the IRS knows what your income is,” Metzger said. “So theoretically, they should be able to take all of that together and go ‘look you fit this [eligible] category’.” Metzger explained that notices should automatically be sent in December to students and graduates if they qualify for loan forgiveness. Individuals who do not receive an eligibility letter can apply on the Federal Student Aid website, however it is still unsure how the application process will look and when it will open.

The Student Loan Forgiveness Plan includes forgiveness for undergraduate federal loans, lower monthly loan pay ments, and a final extension to the current student loan payment pause. Director of Financial Aid at Cal Poly Humboldt, Peggy Metzger, explained that this plan is tentative, but more information will be coming by December of this year.
The Biden-Harris administration and the Department of Education has approved a student loan forgiveness plan to help ease the financial burden on graduates and current students. A whitehouse.gov press release published on Aug. 24 claims that this plan could provide relief for up to 43 million borrowers.
Graduates are able to benefit from the final loan payment pause that will last un til Dec. 31. This system was implemented during the height of the COVID-19 pan demic to help ease the financial burden of paying off student loans while also facing job insecurity, according to the Federal Student Aid website. Monthly loan payments will also become more manageable after this plan’s implementation. According to the White House press release, the Department of Education intends to, “Cut in half the amount that borrowers have to pay each month from 10 percent to 5 percent of discretionary income.” Borrowers with original loan balances below $12,000 may have their loans forgiven after 10 years of payment.TheFederal Student Aid website states that anyone making less than 225 per cent of the federal poverty level (annual equivalent of minimum wage income) will not have to make monthly payments and won’t be charged interest while their pay ments are paused. Borrowers who do have monthly payments because they make more than minimum wage also will not accrue interest so long as they continue to make their monthly payments.
“A lot of times when new bills are passed or when new orders come from the president it's like ‘okay we’re gonna do this’ and then the folks at the Department of Education and the federal student aid office have to figure out how to make it happen,” Metzger said. “That part all still has to happen.” Who is eligible for what? Individuals who have qualified for a Federal Pell Grant can receive up to $20,000 of debt cancellation, while nonPell Grant recipients can only receive up to $10,000, according to the Federal Student Aid website. To be eligible to have your student loan debt forgiven, you must meet both of the following requirements:
• Have had a federal student loan dis bursed prior to June 30 of this year • Make less than $125,000 annually ($250,000 for married couples)

After braving the summer heat for 335 miles along the San Joaquin Valley, thousands of farmworkers and support ers concluded the United Farm Workers march to Sacramento. This journey was made in hopes that Gov. Gavin Newsom would sign Assembly Bill 2183, which would allow farmworkers to vote when and where they please, free of intimida tion from management. The march began in Delano on Aug. 3, taking a similar path Ceasar Chavez and many others took in 1966.

Yolanda Chacon-Serna, a labor orga nizer, began the pilgrimage on its first day. She even celebrated her birthday while passing through Stockton. Chacon-Serna drove the van that would assist the march ers. If someone was tired, had to use the bathroom, or needed refreshments, she was there to assist. “After walking so much everyday, someone is bound to get injured,” Chacon-Serna said. “If someone twists their ankle or is overheated, I go and pick them up. They’re doing so much, I want to help in any way I can.” For the past 30 years she has worked as a labor organizer. Her mother was a farmworker and activist for UFW. “I am the seed that was grown from the struggle of my people,” Chacon-Serna said. “ We must continue so our children haveJesusopportunities.”Garciaisa fellow marcher who was there for most of the duration of the march. He comes from a family of farm workers.“We're not asking, we're demanding justice for farm workers,” Garcia said. “Government and politicians are no longer dealing with farmers in the field. They’re also dealing with their children andThegrandchildren.”proposedbill would extend all farmworkers the right to vote at home, similar to how Californian’s vote in elections. Currently the governor has not agreed to sign Bill 2183 with how it stands. Newsom opposes the current bill due to lack of provisions in an untested mail-inChacon-Sernaelection. explained how this disappointed many of the farmworkers, as they supported Newsom during the time of potentially being recalled from office. “He utilized the vote by mail, farm workers supported him and stood behind him,” Chacon-Serna said. “They feed the world. Farmworkers rights are human rights.”Inresponse to the governor not passing the bill, protestors have set up a vigil outside of the Capitol until the bill is signed. Vigil’s have also been set up in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Fresno. Farm workers have had to continue working in extraneous conditions such as extreme heat waves, COVID-19 and wildfires the past few years. Additionally, they are more susceptible to various health problems due to the chemicals used in the farmingOscarprocess.Mogollon, a Cal Poly Humboldt alumni, is the marketing manager and community peacekeeper at the North Coast Growers Association. The organi zation helps put on the farmers markets in the county and runs food programs that connect farmers with excess food to those who need it. He speaks of the harsh field conditions and lack of respect that workers face. Mo gollon believes this march is a stride in the right direction for farmworker rights. “The march indicates there’s lots of moving pieces in the work, and it still needs solidarity,” Mogollon said. “Prob lems are still on the rise, farmer suicide higher than many other professions. These skilled farm workers are struggling in many domains. They unfortunately don’t get the support when they need it.”

“We just pretty much do our home recipes here,” Carrillo said. “You know, so people can enjoy them too… Everything we cook, we cook up with lots of love.”
The owner Marisela Carrillo runs the restaurant with her mother Graciela Salas. Originally from the Bay Area, Carrillo moved to Humboldt County with her family when she was nine years old. Ever since she was young, Carrillo had always wanted to open up a restaurant. “I just love it, since I’ve been three. I love cooking,” Carrillo said. “I would always, when people would ask me, ‘What did you want to be?’ I would say a cook like a chef.” As she got older, she gained experience in the restaurant industry as a server and chef. In June 2017, Carrillo worked at the Mckinleyville golf course every Friday, preparing and serving tacos for customers. Carrillo mentioned that, “within the peri od of two hours, I was making 250 tacos.” In August 2019, Cocina Mariposa opened and Carrillo’s dream of owning a restaurant finally came true. Since then, Carrillo has been running the restaurant alongside her mom, which has meant a lot to her, serving delicious foods derived from their Michoacan heritage; which is a state in west-central Mexico. Many of the items on the menu are inspired by her mothers cooking.

"I was like, 'oh I'm just going to work here temporarily," Silvia said. A whole year later in 2017, Silvia decided she had the proper skill level to call herself a piercer and had been piercing folks already. She historically made her mark in the industry five years ago.
“I’ve always been intrigued by body piercings especially growing up in a very like old school kinda household, a very catholic household,” Silvia said. “It was very intriguing, so naturally when I had the opportunity to modify myself I really got into Originallyit.” from Santa Ana, Silvia (34) began the process of expanding her body jewelry really young when she had her ear lobes pierced. Around the early-mid 2000s, Silvia allowed a friend to pierce her side lip one day in Cal Poly Humboldt’s dorms and has been rocking them till this day. Through her fascination with the tattoo and piercing industry, Silvia approached a new path outside of dance and she was hired as a shop girl when it was then called Old Growth Tattoo under different own ership, now it’s known as Sangha Tattoo Studio. She handled the front desk, ran shop errands and unintentionally started working towards an apprenticeship in body piercing in August 2016.
Back in 2006, Jackie Silvia came to Hum boldt County to pursue a college education in dance, not expecting that after only a few years of classes, she would be prac ticing the art of body piercing in a tattoo studio that she would one day co-own.

“The opportunity for us to become owners came up and so now we’re running the shop together,” Silvia said. “It’s cool because we both started at the bottom and worked our way up in the industry.”

Being a super fan of horror films, the assumption of this movie being amazing was at an all-time high. Another plus to watch the film was Palmer, she is literal ly a comedian on and off screen. Third reason, that man Kaluuya is a god! He has only evolved from once starting in the British television series "Skins" in 2007 to now, starring roles. The evolution in acting and looks is giving. Although there were tons of mixed reviews I wanted to make sure I went into this movie with an open mind and clear heart. The film was greatly created, the cinematography gave a 90’s western movie vibe. Plus the fashion that Palmer wore gave 90’s nostalgia from the costumes to utilizing horses for different scenes. The film and the plot were very slow and about midway to the end of the film, it was losing momentum for me. This is what you will experience watching this film, you’ll experience a significant amount of suspense, laughter, annoyance and “why would you do that” moments, even jumping for certain parts of the film.
‘Nope,’ A must-see or a flop?
The best intense part of the film is during a night scene in the barn area where Kaluuya is trying to figure out where one of his horses is and unexpect ed terrestrial beings are taunting him. This scene was well done, primarily because in most films people stay and try to investigate what’s going on, but Kaluuya insisted on saying, “nope” and running directly out of the barn.

I had to see it for myself. One review posted on the The Shade Room Twitter page said, “We need the old Peele back, his last two movies were a flop.” In July 2022, Jordan Peele’s film ‘Nope’ released yet another seemingly interesting sci-fi horror film, starring the incredibly entertaining Keke Palmer and the stunningly handsome chocolate Daniel Kaluuya (who is the main leading character in the film ‘Get Out’).

La película y la trama iban muy lentas, y a mediantes de la película, se me estaba acabando la emoción. La parte más intensa de la película es durante una escena de noche, cuando Kaluuya está buscando a uno de sus ca ballos en los establos pero los extraterres tres se burlan de él. Obon is a Japanese Buddhist tradition to honor and remember past ancestors. It’s believed to be a time when the ancestor’s spirits come to visit. Offerings and gifts are left for the spirits of visiting ances tors to enjoy. The event was hosted by HAPI (Humboldt Asians and Pacific Islanders in Solidarity) on Aug. 14. Marylyn Paik-Nicely, one of HAPI's founders and organizer of the Obon Festival, explained the significance of observing this custom on Aug. 14.
“The nature of these dances is very communal, it’s not pairs or couples,” Ku rumada said. “One of the most beautiful things I love about it is seeing this big circle of people and we’re all moving in unison.”Kurumada explained the significance of performing Bon Odori. To him the act of dancing is a physical way of commem orating individuals who have passed. “Dancing is expressive of how to release the spirit from the Starving Ghost, and the idea of just celebrating the life of the people who have gone before you,” Kurumada said. Talks of an Obon festival in Humboldt started at the beginning of 2020, howev er the COVID-19 pandemic postponed this event from happening for two years, according to Paike-Nicely. All of the plan ning leading up to Humboldt’s first Obon festival took place a couple months before the “Peopleevent. from so many different back grounds [came together]. They’re not all Japanese, but they had some experience in their childhood or they grew up with it,” Paik-Nicely said. “It was really wonderful that all these different ideas came togeth er.”HAPI has plans to expand next year’s Obon festival, and keep this celebration as an annually occurring event. Japanese music filled the air outside the Arcata Playhouse on 9 St. at Humboldt’s first Obon Festival. A big white tent sat just past the center stage, greeting attend ees with a silent auction and a six foot twinkling LED cherry blossom tree inside. Slips of white paper with handwritten notes and pictures of passed loved ones adorned the cherry blossom tree, which served as an altar.
“It’s so great getting the community to gether, and in a way saying ‘Hey remem ber that first Obon festival in Humboldt? I kinda helped start it’,” Ronne said. Humboldt’s Obon festival was an op portunity to bring the community together and share parts of Japanese culture. It served as a cultural educational experience for some, and a proud moment of cultural representation for others.
“It’s great to bring a different culture to Humboldt, to our own small universe,” said Ronne. “Seeing the crowd today, I think this is probably the largest crowd in Humboldt I’ve ever seen wearing kimo nos.”Craig Kurumada led two interactive Bon Odori performances..Bon Odori is a dance performed at Obon Festivals. Audience members were encouraged to participate in the dances, creating large circles of synchronized movement around the central stage where Kurumada led. Kurumada grew up with Bon Odori since his childhood and has been teaching it for about 15 years now.

Across from the main tent was an ensemble of taiko, traditional Japanese drums, in different sizes. Gary Ronne, founder of Humboldt Taiko, led two taiko performances that could be felt in the audiences’ chest with each beat of the drum. Ronne explained how playing at Humboldt’s very first Obon festival was a memorable experience for him.

El Jardín Santuario is a community garden in Arcata run by Centro Del Pueblo, who aim to empower the Indige nous immigrant community in Humboldt County. These attacks hinder community building but it is only through spreading more culture that we can combat this intolerance and racism. While these racist strangers among us may tear up the roots in our garden they cannot uproot us from the homes and safe spaces we are building here. It is important to recognize our differences and embrace that diversity, especially in the face of hate like this.

I’ve lived here for a year now, having moved on campus from Los Angeles. As a Chicano man of color, my experi ence as a student at Cal Poly Humboldt is different from my white peers both on and off campus. I'm not treated the same at restau rants if I’m not with a group of my white friends, I have to go out of my way to get the same attention as my white peers in predominantly white learning spaces, I have to deal with stares from older white folk at the grocery store while shopping.These microaggressions aren't new, but they are annoying; I'm only trying to exist. This summer I was filmed by cam pus employees who were putting up trail cameras to try and catch whoever it was that had been stealing the bronze letters off of the newly rebranded “Cal Poly Humboldt” name signs. I took photos of them in an effort to docu ment what was happening in response to the thefts. I was doing my job as a journalist.Iconfronted the man who was taking photos of me with his phone, told him I was a journalist, an innocent student too. He apologized and said that I just “looked suspicious.”
I felt embarrassed that some one would racially profile me. It was especially stressful being one of the few remaining students of color at the university living in the area during the summerAccordingsemester.tothe 2020 US Census, Arcata is roughly 25 percent BIPOC and Cal Poly Humboldt is roughly 40% BIPOC according to Cal Poly Hum boldt’s official website. The diversity on campus and in the community was drastically lower in the summer, it was easy to feel singled out as a Brown man.But this is not the first time this has happened and I am not the only person who has felt singled out for the color of my skin, my race or ethnicity. Racism is instilled in our society and is a kind of intolerance that is rooted in fear and ignorance. It is an ideology that mis guides many people and most impor tantly it disrupts the community. Choosing parenthood is an intimately personal decision that should never be decided by anyone other than the one who will carry that life into the world. Since the overturning of Roe v. Wade, abortion laws are being voted on in different states all across the country. As documented by the New York Times, many states have already begun a total ban on abortion with no exceptions for rape or incest. In some states, the ban has temporarily been blocked for further delib eration. In fewer states abortions remain fullyTolegal.know that your life will be deter mined for you at the sake of someone who is not even born yet is a haunting feeling. I am alive now and I should have the right to make decisions based upon my life first and foremost. Why should the life of an unborn baby be valued over the life of one who is already living?

Why am I voting for my reproductive rights?
I think there is a strong misconception around legalizing abortions. I know this because I grew up going to schools that were avidly pro-life. The decision to carry or not carry out one’s pregnancy is a com plex, thought out process. Pregnancy can be a life-threatening health risk for some. Others may not be able to financially or emotionally support a new child. But most of all, abortion is necessary reproductive right. It is not and never should be a political or religious issue. Voting Though the U.S. right to abortion was overturned, states still have the power to provide reproductive rights for residents. However, that is if residents show up and vote. Nearly half of the U.S.’s 50 states are expected to ban abortion. If California hopes to become a resource for out-of-state individuals seeking abortions, as Governor Gavin Newsom plans, it is imperative that locals cast their votes. Humboldt residents can plan to mark their calendars for Nov. 8, when registered California voters will be sent a vote-bymail ballot. Ballot measure proposition 1 will be included in this ballot for the Gen eral Election, which would prohibit the state from getting involved in reproductive decisions. The last day to register to vote for the General Election is Oct. 24. As frustrating as it is that we are voting again for our rights, we must not give up. We must not let politicians get the last say on our bodies. We need to make our voic es heard and this time louder. So vote. In wake of the recent changes in reproductive rights, many are worried for the future access to birth control as well. However there are still local resources for individuals seeking birth control, emergen cy contraceptives, and abortions.
