REDEFINING SUCCESS

Stories of Empowered Mothers in Business

In a society where success is often equated with material possessions and professional achievements, it’s essential to pause and redefine the true essence of success. It extends beyond mere wealth or status; true success lies in making a positive impact on the lives of others and finding personal fulfillment along the way. Tana Russon, the inspiring visionary behind the Rock-Solid Foundation, perfectly embodies this philosophy through her incredible journey of empowering individuals and effecting transformative change.

Tana’s personal journey began with its fair share of challenges and hardships, just like many others. She understands firsthand that life can throw unexpected curveballs, but it’s our response to these challenges that truly define our path. Motivated by her own experiences and a deep desire to make a difference, she embarked on a mission to raise awareness about human trafficking and provide support for survivors to recover, heal, and find a brighter future.

The Rock Solid Foundation strives to fulfill its vision by helping individuals recognize their self-worth and embrace their unique qualities. Tana and her dedicated team work closely with other organizations, offering counselling services and support to survivors of rape and sexual abuse. However, the foundation recognizes that prevention is crucial, and thus, they place a strong emphasis on education and awareness. By engaging with pre-teens and teenagers, speaking at schools, and fostering discussions, they empower young individuals with self-image, self-love, and self-affirmation, equipping them with the necessary tools to protect themselves from the manipulative tactics of human traffickers.

Throughout her work, Tana has encountered countless success stories that have deeply impacted her own journey and reinforced her unwavering commitment to making a difference. She finds immense joy in witnessing individuals who were once burdened by shame and hopelessness regain their strength and resilience. These survivors not only overcome their past traumas but go on to volunteer, counsel others, and share their stories, becoming beacons of hope for those still trapped in the darkness. Tana feels privileged to be part of something greater than herself and to witness firsthand the transformative power of resilience and determination.

Balancing the demands of leading an organization like the Rock Solid Foundation with her personal life has been a challenge for Tana. As a mother of two boys, she has had to learn to separate the difficult stories from her home life, creating a nurturing and safe environment for her children. Setting boundaries and relying on the support of others have proven effective in managing both aspects effectively. Tana draws strength from her faith and takes time for herself, engaging in activities that nourish her soul, such as gardening, cooking, and listening to old vinyl records.

Building and running the foundation hasn’t come without its fair share of challenges. Tana openly admits that the nature of their work sometimes tests her faith in humanity. However, witnessing the breakthroughs and transformations in the lives of survivors reaffirms her belief in the power of resilience and determination. It’s these stories of triumph over adversity that inspire her to keep pushing forward, even when faced with seemingly insurmountable obstacles.

Looking ahead, the Rock Solid Foundation harbours ambitious goals and aspirations. They aim to expand their reach by visiting more schools and conducting educational talks. Additionally, they plan to establish a safe house where survivors can find refuge, receive counselling, and undergo rehabilitation. This safe space will also offer skills training, empowering survivors to reintegrate into society with confidence and pride.

If you’re wondering how you can get involved and support the Rock Solid Foundation, there are various avenues to make a difference. As a nonprofit organization, they rely on funding and donations to continue their crucial work. Spreading the word about their mission through advertising and word of mouth plays a vital role. By contributing your time, resources, or expertise, you can help create a ripple effect of positive change.

Tana Russon’s personal journey and the Rock Solid Foundation serve as a poignant reminder of the importance of empowering lives and providing support to those in need. Each one of us possesses the power to positively impact someone else’s life, and by doing our part, no matter how small, we can collectively create a compassionate and nurturing environment where everyone can thrive. Let’s redefine success by measuring it through the lives we touch and the difference we make. Together, we can build a brighter future for all.

Her Working Success Story Sandy Pekeur-Sandy

Once upon a time, there was a remarkable woman named Sandy Pekeur-Sandy. As a full-time mom and caregiver to her special needs son, Joshua, Sandy’s journey would transform her life and inspire others.

For 15 years, Sandy had dedicated herself to the corporate world, learning valuable lessons along the way. However, her heart was always with Joshua, who was born on April 2, World Autism Day, and diagnosed with autism at the tender age of two. Joshua’s educational journey was filled with transitions, as he attended nine different schools and had four caregivers. It was a rollercoaster ride, but Sandy was determined to give her son the support and love he deserved.

The turning point came when Sandy made the courageous decision to leave her corporate job behind and become a full-time mom and caregiver for Joshua. This newfound dedication allowed them to explore their passions together, particularly in the kitchen. Cooking and baking became their shared bond, a place where they could have fun and create beautiful memories. Sandy realized that being there for her son’s development was a priceless opportunity she didn’t want to miss while working full-time.

Together, they found solace and joy in the kitchen, bonding over cooking and baking. Sandy realized that being there for Joshua’s development was priceless, and she wanted to make a difference in the lives of other parents. Thus, she founded the Nosh for Josh Foundation, raising awareness and providing support to fellow parents.

During this journey, Sandy experienced the loss of both her parents, burdening her with grief and sadness. But Joshua, with his innocent smile, asked her to bake cookies together, invoking memories of her talented baker mother. Baking became their therapeutic escape, washing away the pain.

On Joshua’s 15th birthday, they launched “Joshua’s Cookies” with the slogan “Be My Voice, One Cookie at a Time.” The response was overwhelming, and they baked approximately 21,000 cookies, spreading joy, and creating connections. They even organized 33 community bakeoffs involving special needs youth, fostering a sense of belonging and celebration.

On Joshua’s 16th birthday, they established the Joshua Sandy Institute for Diverse and Inclusion, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting individuals with diverse needs. Joshua became the boss, and Sandy took on the role of manager, leading their mission with passion and determination.

Balancing their professional and personal responsibilities required effective time management. Sandy created visual boards to map out their schedules, ensuring they stayed on top of their commitments.

Through community bake-offs, Sandy witnessed the profound influence she had on others’ lives. She became a role model, spreading messages of hope and witnessing the joy caregivers and children experienced while baking together.

Sandy faced challenges and moments of sacrifice as a working mom, but she never regretted leaving her corporate job. Her dedication to her son’s well-being and her entrepreneurial ventures brought her fulfillment. Prioritizing “me time” in the mornings, planning, and maintaining clear boundaries helped her find harmony.

Sandy encourages other working moms to embrace the challenges, knowing that patience and perseverance are key. Building a support system and believing in oneself is crucial. Success takes time, and the challenges faced by women in business should fuel determination, not discourage.

Sandy’s story is an inspiration that showcases the transformative power of love, resilience, and pursuing one’s dreams. It reminds us that success can be redefined on our own terms.

Her Working Success Story Phillipa Geard

Phillipa Geard, CEO and Founder, is a remarkable working mom who has redefined success on her own terms. Her journey as an entrepreneur and mother is a tale of determination, resilience, and finding fulfillment in both career and family.

Phillipa started her career in corporate marketing, working both locally and internationally. However, at the age of 32, she decided it was time to start a family. Her plans took an unexpected turn when her son arrived prematurely. This life-altering event led her to take a career break instead of returning to work as planned.

After her daughter turned two, Phillipa felt the desire to get back to work. Like many moms, she started as a consultant and discovered the need for talented mothers in the business world. Inspired by conversations with other mothers who longed for more flexibility in their work lives, Phillipa envisioned a platform that could connect these mothers with employers who respected their role as mothers and offered meaningful career opportunities.

Challenges were an inherent part of her journey. Time management and self-doubt were among the biggest hurdles she faced as a working mom and entrepreneur. Balancing multiple roles and responsibilities demanded careful prioritization and clarity of personal values and boundaries. Phillipa learned to drown out the naysayers with self-belief, passion, and vision, choosing to embrace the imperfect nature of balancing work and family life.

To effectively manage her time and responsibilities, Phillipa built a strong team around her, recognizing that she couldn’t do everything alone. She prioritized her faith, marriage, and children, understanding that certain aspects of life may require more attention at different times. Work-life integration, rather than balance, became her guiding principle, acknowledging the multifaceted nature of her life and the importance of each aspect.

As Phillipa embarked on her entrepreneurial journey, she realized the significance of being a role model for her children. Her daughter’s admiration and acknowledgment of Phillipa’s ability to prioritize both family and career served as a powerful testament to the positive impact she had made. It reaffirmed her belief that she could achieve success in both realms and inspired her to continue blazing a trail for other working moms.

Phillipa established a robust support system to maintain a healthy work-life balance. Her husband’s unwavering support, a dedicated housekeeper, and a professional team at work all played vital roles in helping her manage the various responsibilities she juggled. Additionally, her faith served as a grounding force, providing joy, hope, and strength during challenging times.

Throughout her journey, Phillipa had to make difficult decisions and sacrifices, but she never viewed it as a choice between her business and family. Instead, she embraced the concept of work-life integration, recognizing the significance of all aspects of her life and prioritizing accordingly.

In the face of guilt and pressure, Phillipa has learned to be kind to herself and let go of the pursuit of perfection. She understands that on some days she will excel as a mother, while on other days, she will excel as a boss. Accepting the tension between these roles and releasing the burden of guilt has allowed her to find a sense of balance and contentment.

For other working moms aspiring to start their own businesses or pursue entrepreneurial ventures, Phillipa offers the following advice:

Starting your own business as a working mom is undoubtedly challenging, but it is also immensely rewarding. Phillipa encourages aspiring entrepreneurs to give it their all, both in their business ventures and in their commitment to their families. She emphasizes the importance of resilience and tenacity, as there will undoubtedly be tough days along the way. Believing in yourself and having a clear vision for your business are crucial elements that will help you overcome obstacles and propel your venture forward.

At the same time, Phillipa advises aspiring entrepreneurs to maintain humility and a willingness to learn from others. She emphasizes that seeking help and information when needed is a strength, not a weakness. Building a network of support through mentors, fellow entrepreneurs, and like-minded individuals can offer invaluable guidance and encouragement along the entrepreneurial journey.

Additionally, Geard underscores the importance of honing skills and expertise in one’s chosen field. Building trust with clients and customers relies on showcasing capabilities and continuously learning and growing. This not only benefits the business but also enhances self-confidence as a working mom.

In the pursuit of success as an entrepreneur and working mom, Geard emphasizes the need to prioritize and strike a harmonious blend between work and family life. Recognizing that there will be times when one aspect requires more attention than the other is crucial. Instead of striving for perfection, embracing the imperfections and complexities of balancing work and family is the key to finding fulfillment and happiness.

In conclusion, Phillipa Geard’s journey as a working mom and entrepreneur exemplifies the power of redefining success and integrating work and family life. Through her story, she highlights the essential qualities and skills for working moms to thrive as entrepreneurs, including grit, self-belief, vision, humility, and a strong support system. It is a challenging journey, but the rewards and opportunities for personal and societal empowerment make it worthwhile. Geard’s story serves as an inspiration to all working moms with dreams in their hearts, encouraging them to embrace the complexities, believe in themselves, and redefine success on their own terms.

Her Working Success Story

In business, success is often measured by financial achievements, career advancements, and professional accolades. However, for many working moms, success takes on a whole new meaning. It is about finding the delicate balance between pursuing their entrepreneurial dreams and fulfilling their responsibilities as mothers. These empowered mothers are rewriting the narrative, proving that they can thrive in both worlds and redefine what it means to be successful.

One such inspiring woman is Kennethea Jackson Williams, the founder of the Business Breakfast Club. Her journey as a working mom and entrepreneur is a testament to the power of determination and resilience. Kennethea’s story is one of triumph over challenges and the pursuit of a life that integrates both her passion for business and her love for her family.

As a mother, Kennethea initially struggled to navigate the demands of motherhood alongside her entrepreneurial aspirations. The juggling act seemed overwhelming, and there were moments when she felt like she was falling short in various areas of her life. However, with time, she learned to be more gracious with herself and embrace the imperfections of balancing both roles. She realized that being an entrepreneur and a mom was a blessing in disguise, allowing her to tap into her entrepreneurial spirit while nurturing her children.

What inspired Kennethea to pursue her business idea amidst the challenges of motherhood was her aversion to conformity and the desire to have a space where she could make her own decisions. She had always gravitated towards entrepreneurship, finding it more suitable for her independent nature. Looking back, she chuckles at the thought of how her life would have unfolded if she had chosen a different path.

The journey of a working mom and entrepreneur is not without its hurdles. For Kennethea, one of the biggest challenges was managing the emotional expectations of motherhood while striving for success as a female entrepreneur.

Learning to say no to certain business com mitments during her planned leisure time and disciplining herself to disconnect from work were essential lessons she had to master.

Effective time management became Kennethea’s secret weapon in fulfilling her professional and personal responsibilities. She learned the art of planning and preparation, allowing her to stay on top of her game. By creating a solid foundation of time management, she was able to allocate quality time to her business and her family without feeling overwhelmed.

One poignant moment in Kennethea’s journey made her realize the importance of being a role model for her children through her entrepreneurial endeavours. Watching her boys develop an entrepreneurial mindset and witnessing their creative ideas in marketing and social media reinforced her belief that the tools she shares with them will shape their future choices.

To maintain a healthy work-life balance, Kennethea strategically developed support systems and selected her associations with care. Building a strong network of like-minded individuals and securing valuable connections through her networking platform, the Business Breakfast Club, made her journey easier. She also learned the importance of protecting her mental and emotional well-being by maintaining a clear boundary between business and personal life.

As with any path to success, difficult decisions and sacrifices are inevitable. Kennethea acknowledges that sacrifices are part of the journey and the lessons learned along the way shape us into whom we become. It’s a process of growth and accepting that it’s okay to make choices that prioritize either the business or family at different times.

The guilt and pressure that come with balancing work and family life can be overwhelming. Kennethea has learned to address these feelings headon by improving communication within her family. Having open conversations and explaining the obligations she needs to fulfill allows her children to understand and support her commitments.

Jul/Aug Issue 13

For other working moms aspiring to start their own businesses or pursue entrepreneurial ventures, Kennethea offers valuable advice. She emphasizes the importance of asking for help and recognizing that no one can do everything on their own.

Harnessing your skills and admitting when you need assistance are key to success. When finances are tight, bartering can be a valuable resource. Kennethea encourages working moms to be fearless in their pursuits and never forget to “Bevoorbarag,” a phrase that symbolizes the power of stepping out of one’s comfort zone.

In Kennethea’s view, several qualities and skills are essential for working moms who want to succeed as entrepreneurs. Complete perseverance is crucial, as it takes unwavering determination to overcome challenges and setbacks. A die-hard attitude of resilience helps navigate the ups and downs of the entrepreneurial journey. Additionally, an impeccable spirit of discernment, coupled with listening to one’s instincts, enables working moms to make informed decisions and seize opportunities.

Kennethea’s story shows that it is possible to integrate the roles of a businesswoman and a loving mother, creating a harmonious blend that brings fulfillment and happiness. Her journey exemplifies the strength, resilience, and tenacity required to thrive in both personal and professional spheres.

So, take the leap, believe in yourself, and redefine success on your own terms. Be empowered, be fearless, and be the role model you aspire to be. The world needs more working moms who are making their mark in entrepreneurship, shaping a future where work and family can coexist harmoniously. Embrace the journey, celebrate your achievements, and continue to inspire others with your unique story of redefining success.

Jihaan Abrahams Her Working Success

Jihaan Abrahams, a personal trainer, and entrepreneur, embarked on a remarkable journey as a working mom, redefining success through her determination and passion. In 2010, Jihaan realized that she was capable of much more than simply sitting behind a desk for someone else. She was an educated woman who had raised two children and craved a greater purpose in life.

With a leap of faith, Jihaan began her entrepreneurial venture by teaching dance classes. She charged a mere R10 per class in the beginning, unsure if people would take to her unique style. But it wasn’t long before Jihaan’s talent and dedication caught the attention of a prominent gym in South Africa. They offered her a slot to teach at their flagship facilities, opening doors she never thought possible.

As Jihaan’s dance classes gained popularity, members started asking if she could provide her services for their corporate wellness days. Encouraged by the demand, Jihaan took a leap of faith once again and started calling various companies, offering her expertise. In 2011, Slay it With Confidence (S.I.W.C) was born, showcasing Jihaan’s fitness programs at schools and partnering with well-known brands.

But Jihaan’s journey wasn’t just about business; it was about providing a secure future for her children. Inspired by her kids, Jihaan knew she had to find a way to support them financially and ensure they received a good education. Living in the southern suburbs could be costly, and Jihaan was determined to create a better life for her family without relying on handouts or grants.

Yet, just when Jihaan’s business was flourishing, the COVID-19 lockdown struck, bringing everything to a halt. Classes, clients, income—everything seemed to vanish overnight. Adapting her primarily face-toface business to the online realm was challenging, but Jihaan remained resilient. As restrictions eased, she slowly rebuilt her venture, offering both online and in-person classes, ensuring that S.I.W.C stayed relevant in a rapidly changing world.

She became a role model for them, teaching them the value of hard work, resilience, and pursuing their dreams. She realized that her entrepreneurial journey would leave behind a legacy, inspiring her children to continue the business she had built.

To maintain a healthy work-life balance, Jihaan embraced flexibility. She took her business online and offline, adapting to the ever-evolving needs of her clients. Through it all, Jihaan’s unwavering belief in herself and her vision guided her forward.

Jihaan Abrahams’ story is a testament to the resilience and unwavering spirit of empowered mothers in business. Her journey is a reminder that success is not confined to traditional notions of career achievements. It is a deeply personal endeavour, driven by passion, determination, and the desire to create a better future for ourselves and our loved ones.

As we celebrate the stories of empowered mothers like Jihaan, let us remember that behind every success story is a human being with dreams, struggles, and the unwavering will to overcome challenges. In a sea of extraordinary women, Johanne Kabiwa shines brightly as a beacon of inspiration for working moms seeking to redefine success. Her journey is a testament to the power of determination and passion, showcasing how one can overcome challenges and build a thriving business. Let’s explore Johanne’s story and uncover the secrets that have led to her incredible accomplishments.

Like many working moms, Johanne faced her fair share of challenges. As a consultant and French teacher, she had built a fulfilling career. However, when the pandemic hit, everything changed. The once-abundant opportunities became scarce, leaving Johanne searching for a way to support herself and her family.

It was during this uncertain time that Johanne decided to take a leap of faith. Fuelled by her unwavering determination, she opened her own business in June 2022. Elite Beauty by Johanne. k was born, specializing in game-changing Magnetic lashes and organic Shea butter that worked wonders for hair and skin. Johanne poured her heart and soul into her business, delighting in the positive impact it had on her clients’ lives.

But being a working mom and entrepreneur was not without its challenges. Johanne had to find a delicate balance between her professional and personal responsibilities.

Time management became her closest ally, as she carefully allocated specific time slots for work, family, and selfcare. Through prioritization and setting clear boundaries, she managed to fulfill both her professional and personal obligations.

The driving force behind Johanne’s pursuit of her business idea was her passion for the beauty industry. Another factor that inspired Johanne was the flexibility that came with being her own boss. As a mother and wife, she understood the importance of being present for her family while pursuing her entrepreneurial dreams. By creating a schedule that allowed her to prioritize her loved ones, Johanne found the freedom she needed to excel in both roles.

Of course, there were hurdles to overcome along the way. Johanne had to navigate the ever-present guilt and pressure that often accompany the balancing act of work and family life. But she was not alone. With the support of her understanding husband, family members, and trusted friends, she found solace and encouragement.

They provided the reassurance she needed to persevere and succeed.

One poignant moment stands out in Johanne’s journey. As a mother to young children, she realized that finding joy and fulfillment in her business positively impacted her ability to be a loving role model for her children. It was a profound lesson in self-care and its ripple effects on those around her.

To maintain a healthy work-life balance, Johanne adopted various strategies and support systems. She became a master of time management, skillfully juggling her

responsibilities and allocating dedicated moments for each aspect of her life.

Through effective communication and setting boundaries, she ensured that her time with her family was cherished and uninterrupted.

There were instances when Johanne had to make difficult decisions and sacrifices.

Sometimes, her business demanded her undivided attention, temporarily taking time away from her family. But with open and honest communication, she and her husband found ways to create quality moments together, even if they had to be delayed.

The Winter Skincare

Shea Butter takes the Skincare industry by storm

Shea butter has become increasingly popular in recent years due to its many benefits for the skin, hair, and overall health.

A natural ingredient extracted from the nuts of the Shea tree, Shea Butter has been used for centuries in West Africa and some parts of East Africa for its moisturizing and healing properties.

Grand View Research indicates that the global Shea butter market size was valued at USD 2.07 billion in 2021 and is expected to grow even bigger in the coming years.

What is Shea Butter?

Shea butter is a natural fat that is extracted from the nuts of the African Shea tree (Vitellaria paradoxa). The Shea tree itself is native to West Africa, and part of East Africa, and the butter has been used for centuries by African communities for both culinary and cosmetic purposes.

It comes in different forms (Raw, unrefined, and refined), which depends on how it was processed and whether it is from a West African or East African Shea tree.

Many people are now becoming conscious and curious about the ingredients used in their skin care products, leaning towards natural products that are gentle on the skin and good for the environment.

Why is Shea Butter a popular winter skincare trend?

As temperatures drop, many people experience dry, rough, and flaky skin, leaving the skin more susceptible to damage and irritation. Shea Butter comes to the rescue, with its ability to provide intense hydration and nourishment to the skin. But that’s not the only reason more and more consumers are turning to this wonder butter.

• Easily absorbed into the skin, Shea butter forms a protective barrier that helps to prevent moisture loss and keeps the skin hydrated.

• An anti-inflammatory containing compound that can help to reduce inflammation and redness in the skin, making it a great choice for those with eczema or psoriasis.

• It also contains antioxidants that can help to protect the skin from environmental damage and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

• Shea butter also packs vitamins A, E, and F, which are important for healthy skin. Vitamin A helps to improve the skin’s texture and tone, while vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant that can help to protect the skin from free radical damage. Vitamin F, which is a combination of essential fatty acids, can help to soothe dry and irritated skin.

Versatile and easy to use you can boost your winter skincare routine by using Shea butter as a face moisturizer, body butter, lip balm, hand cream, or even a foot balm.

Shea Butter is available in its raw and unrefined form on www.elitebeautysa.co.za

Supported by her hands-on husband, supportive in-laws, and mother, she managed to navigate the demands of work and family life. Being featured on the cover of a nationally printed magazine just nine days after giving birth became a milestone that reignited her determination to succeed in both her professional and personal roles.

For this remarkable woman, who hails from the vibrant community of Mitchell’s Plain, uplifting and empowering those from poor communities has been a guiding principle for her. She aims to reshape the narratives of young girls from marginalized backgrounds, providing them with opportunities for growth. Spirituality also plays a significant role in her approach to leadership and mentorship, keeping God first in all her endeavours.

Reflecting on her journey, she acknowledges the challenges faced by many working mothers, including the prevalent mom guilt and the struggle to regain self-confidence after childbirth. However, she finds solace and strength within the mom community, which provides support and empowerment.

Venturing into entrepreneurship, she turned her women empowerment platform into an online clothing store. Curating designs that resonate with her personal style, she combines her passion for fashion with her mission of empowerment. Her enthusiasm for this new endeavour is evident as she models for her own page.

Despite the demands of work and family life, she remains motivated to pursue her goals. Her advice to other working moms is to never doubt their ability to be great. “As women, we often place ourselves last, prioritizing our families above all else. While I believe in the importance of family, I also advocate for the balance of being a present mother who inspires her children to pursue their dreams. As a young girl, I dreamt of bringing about change in the media and fashion industry. Never could I have imagined that I would become the very change I yearned for, breaking barriers, and proving the naysayers wrong.”

Feel-Good Food vs Fad Diets

Diet culture is a collective set of social expectations, driven primarily by social media, that tell us how we should look, and what we should be eating to fit the societal norms of ‘perfection’. It tells us that if we look a certain way, we are more accepted. Aside from creating incredibly unrealistic beauty standards, the most harmful aspect of diet culture is that it focuses on what we weigh over health and well-being and encourages us to cut out entire food groups – such as carbohydrates – while labeling certain foods good or bad, dirty, or clean. When we are consistently told that certain foods are associated with weight gain or loss, it creates guilt, and fear and can trigger long-term unhealthy relationships with food.

We have to change our perspective on what health means to each one of us individually. Health can’t simply be based on our size or the numbers on a scale – essentially how we look has no bearing on whether we are healthy or not. Yes, obesity levels in South Africa are high with half of all adults overweight (23%) or obese (27%), but on the flip side, obsessing about being thin is harmful on many levels because food restriction can lead to mood swings, dehydration, constipation, malnutrition, decreased metabolism, muscle loss, and even an eating disorder.

“If you made a resolution this year to lose weight, make sure that it is not an extreme goal. Unrealistic goals are difficult to follow through on and risk you starting your year, feeling like a failure “ Arthur Ramoroka, Corporate Nutritionist and Eat Well Live Well ambassador, and Claire Julsing Strydom, Registered Dietitian and Co-founder of Nutritional Solutions, share some insight on what diet culture is, why it’s dangerous, and how we can shift our perspective on health and nutrition to let go of restrictive fads and focus on more balanced nutrition for holistic wellbeing.

The vicious circle of fad diets

The overwhelming social pressure of having to look perfect is leading to an increasing amount of ‘fad diets’ becoming trendy. Quick-weight-loss or fad diets are appealing - who doesn’t like the idea that we can be slim and trim with very little time or effort? What makes them almost impossible to ignore too is how we get bombarded from all sides with messaging about trends in nutrition on social media, in commercials, and in books, but often the advice is conflicting. There is also very rarely evidence-based science to back up the safety or efficacy of most fad diets.

While there are many fad diets out there, they all essentially share one common denominator –elimination or deprivation of the body.

What we need to understand is that any diet based on restricting specific food groups, or following rigid menus that do not allow for any deviation or inclusion of the foods you enjoy are typically unsustainable and harmful to our health.

The bottom line on fad diets? They don’t work long-term and simply promise a “quick fix,” which can do more harm than good. In fact, research indicates a 95% failure rate, meaning only 5% of people lose weight and keep the weight off long-term.

Put on the brakes and take control!

So, what should we be doing to break the cycle of fad dieting? Think about what a stable and healthy weight looks like and how weight cycling that goes hand in hand with fad diets can be avoided. Focus on eating a healthy balance of foods from all the food groups that nourish the body.

It starts with identifying small changes that can be made and sustained – it can be as simple as making it a priority to eat one cup of veggies with every meal. We also need to learn to stop labeling food as good or bad, and rather choose to add healthier options to our plates, like loading on colorful fresh vegetables is a great start. And most importantly, we need to take a step back when it comes to nutrition and our health and look at the whole picture. We need to look at our health holistically and focus on eating healthy food more regularly but also getting enough sleep, engaging in physical activity, and managing our stress, all these factors influence our overall health. Small consistent changes over the long term, can result in gradual but sustainable weight loss, without driving ourselves crazy in the process.

We should not fear food and never allow social media influencers (or even family and friends) to tell us how we should and shouldn’t eat. Focus on balance and moderation of ALL FOODS, and perceive food as nourishing, delicious, and satisfying because sharing a delicious meal truly is one of life’s greatest pleasures that none of us should be missing out on.

Ask yourself:

Exercise vs Physical Activity:

What’s The Difference

Physical activity and exercise are often used interchangeably, but they actually refer to different things and health outcomes.

Any movement that burns calories, including walking, gardening, and household chores can be considered ‘physical activity’ while ‘exercise’ refers to planned, structured physical activity that is designed to improve cardiovascular fitness, strength, and endurance.

Understanding the difference is important because it can help you be more intentional about your movement and ensure that you are meeting your health goals.

1. Am I doing this because I’m trying to improve my physical fitness health?”

2. Do I plan to do this consistently from week to week or even day to day”.

If you’re saying no to one or both questions, then the activity you are about to do is not considered an exercise and is purely a physical activity. Should you answer yes to the questions then it’s an exercise.

While cliché, a regular planned workout is essential for both mental and physical health.

Try these easy and effective workouts from home or the office:

• 5-minute running on the spot

• 5-minute abs (basic sit-up)

• 5 minutes of squats (Sit in a chair and stand up)

The benefits of exercise include the prevention of excessive weight gain, managing anxiety and depression, reducing high blood pressure, and aiding with diabetes. Moreover, it boosts your energy levels and improves your sleep pattern.

Listening to music:

Music will help keep you alert and focused while you’re training. The choice of music can be motivational or synchronized music with your routine. This usually has both a physical and psychological effect. When you have a favourite song with a good beat and rhythm, it will encourage you to push harder in your workout or training session.

Exercise Outfit:

What we wear either makes us feel comfy or sexy RIGHT? So, let’s get cute and slay our fitness outfit with confidence. Wear an outfit that makes you feel ready to get active and makes you want to reach that goal by the time Summer comes around.

Mom Shaming! A Stigma

Motherhood is not a Competition to see who has the smartest kids, the cleanest house, the healthiest dinners, and the nicest clothes. Motherhood is YOUR journey with YOUR children.

Mom-shaming is a hurtful form of bullying that involves harsh judgments and subtle aggression towards mothers for their parenting choices. Labels like “helicopter mom” and “tiger mom”, drill-sergeant mom, and hummingbird mom, add to the pressure. It perpetuates unrealistic expectations, leading to self-doubt, feelings of failure, and unworthiness. It’s important to foster support, and understanding, and celebrate diverse parenting styles while offering empathy and reassurance to all mothers. Let’s uplift and empower moms, recognizing their love, sacrifice, and resilience.

Mom Shaming pinpoints to a mom’s decision about

Ways to Deal with Mom Shaming

1. STAY at home.

It shows up like, ‘It is cool not to have to work ‘or ‘I wish I had been able to play with my kids all day’. When a mother joins the back office after the baby, she gets a stare ‘See how careless! She preferred her career to her child’ or ‘I would never leave my son with the Maid’. Often such unintentional comments can be passive-aggressive ways to judge another mom’s choices.

2. Breastfeeding choices.

It’s one of the most personal and often exhausting aspects of motherhood. Yet many express their spontaneous, unsolicited judgments adding to the Mom’s existing agony. There are varieties of reasons that moms can’t breastfeed even if they want to.

3. Take on non -traditional Parenting Roles.

Correcting how to parent her baby, referring to AAP (American Academy of Paediatrics) guidelines is done with good intentions. But She may find it judgemental or overstepping into her territory.

Shaming about Children’s development and questioning her on the baby’s milestone!

‘Don’t you think your baby should crawl by now?’ are all humiliating. It may so happen she is worried about it and your undue concern doubles her worry.

4. How to spend free time.

There is no ‘one-fit-in-size’ for a New Mom. She has her way to keep a balance. If she spends a lot at the gym, she gets a troll ‘She is not giving the required time to her baby’. Some have the temptation to push their selfmade approach on others.

But enhance your coping strategies by prioritizing self-care and confidence in sticking to your decision. Stop comparing yourself to others and choose one or two Trusted sources to rely on for information. Set your boundaries and unfollow social media if that makes you feel bad.

If you want to say something to MOM shamers, you can do so with a superficial ‘thank you ‘. It alludes to the fact that you will consider their ideas and then walk away. The best thing you can do is whatever makes you feel comfortable.

Ultimately the best way to respond to Mom Shamer is ‘NOT to SAY ANYTHING AT ALL— ‘! No need to justify your parenting to anyone.
