Her book, Reparenting the Inner Child, is not just another title on the shelf; it’s a movement. Since its release, it has sold over 1,000 copies, a remarkable feat for any self-published author. The book has also been nominated and chosen by the Department of Sport, Arts, and Culture, solidifying its place as a valuable resource in the field of mental health. To make it even more accessible, it has been added to Cape Town libraries, ensuring that more South Africans can benefit from its insights.

Beyond being an author, Candice has spent years shaping conversations around mental health and connection. As an Independent Social Work Practitioner, she has worked across government, private practice, and higher education. As a South African woman, Candice is also passionate about redefining the discourse around motherhood and self-worth. In a culture that often expects mothers to put themselves last, she reminds women that prioritising their own well-being is not selfish, it’s necessary.

“When mothers take care of themselves, they show up better for their families and those in their circle,” she says.

Candice’s book is more than just a personal success; it’s a reflection of the power of selfpublishing, perseverance, and believing in the work you put out into the world. She refers to it as her gift to the world and embraces the philosophy that every individual has a unique gift.

The Art of Confidence: Taryn K’s Passion for Beauty & Empowerment For Taryn K, beauty is more than just skin deep—it’s about confidence, empowerment, and the joy of transformation. As a makeup artist with 14 years of experience in hair, makeup, and nails, she considers it an honour to be part of her clients’ special moments.

“I love seeing the excitement in their eyes when they realize how beautiful they truly are. That moment of self-recognition is priceless,” she shares. For Taryn, each application of makeup is a chance to bring out the inner confidence that lies within her clients.

Her love for beauty started early. Always drawn to dressing up and enhancing her own features, Taryn developed an early fascination with all things beauty.

She would spend hours experimenting with makeup and creating new looks, not just for herself, but for her friends and family. “I’ve always been a girly girl, and I love making women feel beautiful,” she recalls. “It’s about more than just makeup—it’s about bringing out the confidence that’s already inside them.” This passion for beauty and creativity naturally led her to pursue a career in makeup artistry, where she could help others feel just as beautiful as she knew they were.

Like many in the industry, Taryn has faced the challenge of seasonal fluctuations in business. But through persistence and the power of word-ofmouth, she has built a solid reputation that keeps her booked throughout the year. “At first, it was tough, but I stayed consistent,” she admits.

The Anniversary of How Nadia Gamieldien Life Changed Forever "Allah knows best." For Nadia Gamieldien, this familiar phrase took on a deeply personal meaning when her life changed in ways she could never have predicted.

As a seasoned freelance radio presenter, Nadia had always been dedicated to her work, her family, and her community. She was thriving in her career and exploring her identity on a personal level, participating in a self-discovery course that was supposed to last five months but extended into an intense and transformative 11 months.

The course opened doors she hadn’t anticipated, uncovering aspects of herself that were both challenging and enlightening. But nothing could have prepared her for what lay ahead.

The turning point came suddenly. Just the night before, Nadia had been celebrating her sister’s birthday over dinner, feeling happy and carefree. By the next day, she was in the hospital, where doctors discovered an 11.5 cm tumor on her adrenal gland—a discovery that would change the course of her life.

Initially unaware of the severity of her condition, Nadia soon found herself under the care of Dr. Abdullah at GMC, whose kindness and compassion helped ease her fears. A week later, she was sitting in front of Professor Paneri, an expert in his field, who confirmed that the tumor was critical and required immediate surgery. The news was overwhelming.

Nadia’s life, which she had so carefully planned, came to an abrupt halt.

The timing couldn’t have been more difficult. It was just before Ramadan, a sacred time Nadia cherished.

Known for her meticulous planning, she usually had everything—down to Eid outfits—sorted well in advance. But now, she found herself sitting alone in a hospital room during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, grappling with the weight of her diagnosis.

The anaesthetist’s warning was clear: as a chronic hypertensive patient, Nadia’s surgery was high-risk.

Hearing this, she broke down in tears, feeling a wave of fear and isolation. Yet, in her darkest moment, she experienced an unexplainable warmth and comfort that calmed her spirit.

When the time came for the operation, panic set in.

Nadia suffered an anxiety attack, closing her eyes and

reciting her kalima, surrendering to the will of Allah.

She prepared herself for the possibility that this might be the end. But as she placed her trust in Him, she found a peace she never thought possible—a profound sense of tawakkul that stayed with her throughout the ordeal.

The surgery, initially expected to last 90 minutes, stretched into three hours. When she awoke, she was met by familiar faces—her loved ones, TT, Naz, and Riyaad—who brought both laughter and tears in the aftermath of an emotional rollercoaster.

Her hospital stay was a period of deep reflection and gratitude. Friends and family visits lifted her spirits, and even small, unexpected moments—like spilled McDonald’s Coke on the hospital floor—became memories etched in her heart. She shared food and kindness with nurses and other patients, building connections that reminded her of the beauty of human compassion.

But Nadia’s battle was far from over. A week later, she sat with her professor again, who delivered news that no one wants to hear: adrenal carcinoma. Cancer. The words hit her like a wave, and the tears wouldn’t stop.

In that moment, Nadia wasn’t sure how to move forward. But her family, along with one very special individual, reminded her that she had been given a second chance. Nadia found strength in her faith and began her recovery with a renewed sense of purpose.

That year’s Ramadan was unlike any other. Nadia described it as an indescribable, transformative experience—a time of spiritual awakening and gratitude.

As the months passed, Nadia realized she no longer wanted her life to return to the way it was. Normal was no longer enough. Instead, she craved peace, happiness, kindness, and love. Her priorities shifted, and she made the decision to live her life for herself and her own fulfillment.

Today, Nadia is a survivor, a fighter, and a woman determined to make the most of her second chance.

As an adopted child, a mother of four, and a divorced woman juggling three jobs to support her family, she carries her journey with strength and dignity.

As idealism and creative spirit swirled through my mind, I recalled defining moments in history— the legendary tales of figures like Christopher Columbus and Alexander the Great, who defied time and tide in equal measure. Their stories offer three essential lessons: have the courage to pursue your dreams, never look back, and persist relentlessly toward success.

My mother has known me well since I began writing. She is the wellspring of my ideas; I inherited my creative spirit from her—my thoughts, my heart, and my life. Every stage of my journey has been touched and inspired by her divine influence. She agreed to my wish, and I planned accordingly. The idea of vanishing from my everyday life, from my usual social circles, was both novel and shrouded in mystery.

It all began on July 8, 2024: I simply vanished— not as a sinister act reminiscent of Jack the Ripper or the atrocities of Nazi Germany, but as a personal experiment. The notion of withdrawing and playing the cards of fate is

both intriguing and nerve-wracking. Over the ensuing four months, I embraced this challenge and explored new potentials. The first two months were dedicated to redefining my literary voice and extending its reach across various parts of India. I still struggle to grasp the reality of it all—a chance to soar, while others, like my cousins and family members, had always taken flight, but not me. Thus, my poetry took to the skies, touching nineteen states in India during July and August, as my pen and I forged bold inroads into the literary landscape.

I travelled with my dreams and the raw intensity of my emotions, immersing myself in newspapers, journals, and embracing the freedom to be myself. As my journey gained momentum, the horizon revealed its first glimmer of light on my poetry. I then ventured to Europe and crossed the diverse landscapes of Africa, flowing through the heart of the Bosporus to reach Istanbul, and eventually finding solace in North America. Finding refuge in this new world, even as a solitary wanderer, proved both challenging and transformative.

I embraced the challenge with a kinder spirit, encouraged by my mother’s steadfast support throughout the journey. Despite her own busy schedule, she stood by me as I viewed each hurdle as an opportunity for continuous growth.

Breaking Free: Small Shifts, Big Impact The most powerful thing you can do isn’t a drastic overhaul.

It’s the small, consistent choices that signal to yourself: I am worth the effort.

Recognising the Cycle Change starts with awareness. To break a pattern, you have to recognise it.

1. Nourish, Don’t Punish Food isn’t the enemy. But for many of us, it’s been turned into one— something to control, something to fear, something to comfort us when nothing else can.

Shifting from punishment to nourishment starts with asking: How do I want to feel? Energised? Strong? Focused?

That answer should guide your choices—not guilt, not diet culture, not the need for quick relief.

Start by adding more of what makes you feel good: whole, nourishing foods that fuel your energy instead of draining it. Don’t overcomplicate, just start with one meal, one snack, one mindful moment where you listen to what your body is telling you it needs.

2. Redefine Rest Rest isn’t lazy. Rest is essential. Yet, we have been conditioned to believe that slowing down is a weakness.

The reality? Your body is speaking to you all the time. Fatigue isn’t something to push through, it’s a message. Chronic headaches, bloating, anxiety, mood swings—your body is constantly trying to communicate. Are you listening?

If the only time you let yourself rest is when you’re sick, your body will find a way to slow you down. Ask me, I know all about it! Instead of waiting for that breaking point, build in micro-moments of rest: a five-minute break, deep breathing between meetings, saying no to things that drain you.

3. Audit Your Circle The people around you shape your habits more than you realise. If your environment normalises skipping meals, numbing stress with alcohol, or treating exhaustion as normal—you will keep absorbing those behaviours.

It doesn’t mean cutting people off— it means choosing your influences carefully. Seeking spaces where prioritising health, joy, and balance is the norm.

4. Ditch the “All or Nothing” Mentality Perfectionism keeps you stuck. If you believe you have to do everything right or not at all, you’ll never start.

Healing happens in the messy middle—in the skipped workouts that don’t derail progress, in the imperfect meals that still nourish, in the days when you show up for yourself even when it’s not pretty.

Start small. One better choice at a time. Because all progress counts.

means it never comes. And so, the cycle continues.

Until we choose to break it.

The Genetics–Lifestyle Connection Ingrid Singels, Marketing Manager for Pharma Dynamics’ Scientific Division, explains that obesity is the result of a complex interplay of genetic, environmental and behavioural factors.

She notes that while certain genes have been linked to a higher body mass index (BMI) and waist-to-hip ratio—affecting fat storage, food metabolism and satiety—genetics alone do not seal our fate. “Research clearly shows that what we eat, how active we are and even our sleep patterns can either magnify or help counteract our genetic predispositions,” she emphasises.

Evidence from Across the Globe Recent studies add weight to these observations. A 2025 study from Nepal1 found that regular physical activity plays a critical role in preventing obesity and type 2 diabetes, with sedentary lifestyles emerging as a significant risk factor. This reinforces the global recommendation of at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week.

In another breakthrough, a Swedish study published in January 2025 in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA)2 analysed data from over 6,700 children aged 6 to 17 who underwent at least a year of obesity treatment. The study revealed that early intervention in childhood not only curbs obesity but also reduces the risk of developing cardiometabolic issues—such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension and high cholesterol—in young adulthood.

Adding a new dimension, emerging research from China3 has spotlighted the link between our circadian rhythms—the body’s natural clock regulating sleep and wake cycles—and obesity. By aligning mealtimes and sleep with our biological rhythms, there appears to be potential to improve metabolism and gut health, thus aiding in obesity prevention.

Singels also draws attention to a critical but often overlooked factor: socio-economic disparity. While many communities continue to struggle with hunger, lower-income areas are increasingly burdened by obesity. Financial inequality often leads to ‘food deserts’, where affordable, nutritious options are scarce and cheaper, ultra-processed foods prevail. Coupled with unequal access to healthcare, these challenges highlight the need for systemic change to improve health outcomes for all.

Many are now exploring personalised nutrition and genetic testing to guide their weight management journey. Tailoring nutritional plans to one’s genetic profile is an emerging approach that not only aids in weight control but also optimises overall health outcomes.

Practical Strategies for Weight Management For busy mums striving to maintain a healthy weight, here are some practical tips that can be woven into your everyday routine: Eat clean: Focus on whole foods such as fruits, vegetables, lean proteins and whole grains, while minimising processed items and sugary drinks.

But parenting isn't always easy. In fact, it can be extremely overwhelming at times. That's why we're eager to share some practical tips and strategies for overcoming common parenting challenges through play-based learning.

Challenge #1: Lack of Time As a working mom, you're constantly juggling multiple responsibilities. It can be hard to find the time to support your baby's development, let alone enjoy quality playtime with your little one.

However, the truth is: you don't need a lot of time to make a big impact. Even just a few minutes of play-based learning each day can be highly beneficial for your baby's development.

Alice’s journey began in March 2023, when her first IVF cycle ended in heartbreak. Out of 24 eggs, only one embryo developed—a result that left her feeling devastated. The daily injections, an unavoidable part of the process, were both physically taxing and emotionally draining. “It was a whirlwind of emotions,” Alice recalls. Despite the initial setback, she refused to give up. After taking a brief pause to regain her strength, May 2023 brought renewed hope. This time, 11 embryos were fertilised, and six healthy ones were stored for future use. Yet, as the day of the pregnancy test approached, every moment was marked by agonising uncertainty. Early negative results struck hard, leaving her spirit bruised but determined.

Balancing the physical and emotional demands of IVF was an enormous challenge—especially while managing the pressures of a full-time job in Child Protection. The hormonal treatments and daily injections left her feeling constantly exhausted, while the emotional highs and lows tested her mental fortitude. To cope, Alice prioritised selfcare by incorporating regular gym sessions, focusing on nutritious meals, staying wellhydrated, and taking moments for mindfulness exercises throughout her day. Equally important was the steadfast support of her husband and close friends, whose encouragement allowed her to face each hurdle with renewed hope.

A common misconception she encountered was that IVF is a guaranteed route to pregnancy. In reality, many factors—egg and sperm quality, age, hormonal balance, and overall health—play a critical role in determining success. Experiencing a failed cycle was a stark reminder that, despite following every protocol, success is never assured.

This experience reinforced the need for realistic expectations and emotional preparedness, prompting Alice to advocate for transparency in fertility treatments.

This is the story of Alice Dube-Tuyishime’s emotional journey through IVF—a rollercoaster of challenges and triumphs that reshaped her understanding of resilience, determination, and the power of support.

Alice’s journey with IVF was punctuated by moments of overwhelming fear, particularly during the daily injections. The very first time was especially daunting—it took her nearly 30 minutes to muster the courage to proceed. Yet, undeterred, she faced her fear of needles again in June 2023. Each injection, while a battle against anxiety, marked a step closer to her dream of motherhood. “Every moment of fear overcome was a small victory that reminded me of my strength,” she reflects.

Deciding to pursue IVF was not an easy decision.

After a year of trying to conceive naturally following her wedding in September 2021, and facing a series of negative pregnancy tests, Alice and her husband realised that something was amiss. Despite undergoing numerous tests that showed everything appeared normal, it was only after a referral to a gynaecologist—and a subsequent hysterosalpingogram (HSG)—that the truth emerged: her fallopian tubes were blocked on both sides. “I remember crying for hours when I learned that natural conception might never be possible for us,” she recalls. However, with the clarity provided by this diagnosis, the couple immediately sought a referral to a fertility specialist, recognising that IVF was their best chance to start a family.

Throughout this arduous journey, Alice found solace in connecting with support groups and other women undergoing IVF. Sharing experiences and reading about others’ struggles and successes helped her realise she was not

Extensive research—comparing costs, success rates, and patient testimonials—guided Alice’s decision. Despite the occasional inconvenience of long journeys, the expertise of her chosen specialist and the clinic’s excellent reputation outweighed the challenges of travel. The supportive relationship she developed with her fertility doctor, whose reassuring presence and humour during stressful appointments eased her anxiety, proved fundamental in shaping her positive experience.

Alice’s heartfelt advice to other couples facing IVF is simple yet profound: prioritise mutual support, maintain open communication, and never hesitate to seek professional guidance when needed.

Balancing work, IVF treatments, and family responsibilities is challenging, but with flexibility, self-care, and a supportive network, every small step forward is a victory.

am a mom by day and a zombie by night, juggling it all. My inner voice insists: "Work hard, mom, harder!" I may be burnt out, but I still manage to shine. My daily struggle centres on meeting work deadlines and handling meltdowns at home. Raising kids is incredible— like running a marathon with an invisible finish line. The neverending to-do list, soccer practices, doctor appointments, parentteacher meetings, and family dinners lead to chronic physical and emotional exhaustion. In the chaos of it all, there’s hardly any time left for me.

Oh! we always end up coming last on the priority list. If you are constantly drained and feeling guilty, you may be experiencing burnout. It is crucial to pause and recalibrate before burnout completely overtakes you. Trust me, work-life balance is not about perfection but about making deliberate choices that support your well-being while you fulfil your responsibilities.

Ways to Prevent Burnout My three-step mantra is: Trust – Delegate – Unburden.

Divide tasks, share the load, and allow yourself to breathe easy. Be specific when asking for help—ask your neighbour to spend some time with your child or request that grandparents assist with homework. Maintain a backup support system and rotate tasks with clear expectations; always express gratitude when someone steps in.

Special ‘Me’ Time Remember to put on your own oxygen mask before helping others.

Avoid burning the candle at both ends; there’s a ticking time bomb of burnout waiting to explode. Start early and regularly schedule "me time" in your calendar. This will positively impact both your health and your personal relationships. Remember, your well-being matters most.

Setting Boundries If your life revolves solely around your child's desires, demands, and hobbies, you end up doing everything yourself—this approach neither proves your love nor truly benefits your children. Allow them to learn the difference between responsibility and dependence, and between accountability and entitlement. Establish firm boundaries for both your children and you at work and set clear expectations with colleagues. Teach your children to respect your work schedule while ensuring quality family time. Learn to say no to extra commitments that drain you and take control of your life.

Practice 4D Rule Prioritise your tasks to prevent overwhelm. Use the 4D Rule: Do important and urgent tasks first (often those that take around five minutes), delegate less critical tasks, defer what isn’t urgent, and delete unnecessary commitments.

Embrace imperfection—dishes can wait, but your mental peace cannot. Your home does not need to be spotless 24/7.

Assign age-appropriate responsibilities to your children and redistribute the workload.

Focus on what you can realistically achieve and resist the urge to tidy up every toy or clean your teenager's room immediately. Instead, involve them in the process and let them take pride in their contributions. Choose progress over perfection.

Mindfulness Techniques Significant changes do not require grand actions; start small. A short meditation or breathing exercise can create a pleasant shift in mood. Try a body scan meditation before bed, fully embracing the sensations in your body. This versatile practice helps to deeply cleanse the mind. Lie down in a quiet space and invite your child to join you. Speak with a support group or trusted family members about your struggles.

Remember, seeking help isn’t a weakness—it’s wisdom. The worst that can happen is they say no; it’s far more uplifting when they say yes.

You Deserve Balance Remember, you’re not a one-woman army! You don't have to choose between work and family—you deserve a positive ecosystem and robust family support to successfully balance both. Burnout is not a badge of honour; it is a wake-up call to recalibrate your priorities. A happy mom is the greatest gift you can give yourself and your family, and you are truly amazing. Work-life balance is not a luxury; it is an absolute necessity!

What stands out is that many women consider hybrid work to be almost twice as important as traditional benefits like parental leave. With 64% of women placing a higher value on the flexibility that hybrid work offers, it’s clear that having control over when and where we work is not just a convenience—it’s a catalyst for career advancement. This flexibility provides us with the space to manage our schedules more effectively, which is essential when balancing the demands of family life and professional ambitions.

For many working moms, the challenges of long commutes and rigid office hours have long been a barrier to success.

ersonally, I love how a new year provides a chance to reassess our focus and establish habits that contribute to our overall well-being. As James Clear emphasises in his book Atomic Habits, setting good habits is a powerful way to achieve personal growth and lasting success. Furthermore, he argues that ‘small, consistent changes in habits can compound over time to produce remarkable results.’ The key takeaway here is: small, consistent changes.

4. Create a Financial Plan Improving your financial planning habits starts with setting shortterm goals (e.g., saving for a vacation), medium-term goals (e.g., building a sustainable emergency fund), and long-term goals (e.g., retirement planning). However, it doesn’t end there—reviewing and monitoring your progress periodically is vital. Consider reaching out to your planner for assistance if you are struggling or simply don’t know where to begin.

As we all know that changing habits is not always easy; however, it is necessary to transform from your current self to your best self.

Good habits certainly help us reach the goals we set, but they do so much more: they help us become the people who consistently succeed.

5. Find Passive or Secondary Income This habit allows you to be creative. Passive income is defined as earnings achieved with minimal active involvement—examples include investments, real estate, or business ventures. Although it often requires upfront effort, money, and time, it provides longterm financial stability. Income from these sources can also help reduce debt or contribute to your emergency fund.

My focus as a financial planner is to help clients transform their financial habits. Financial habits are behaviours and routines related to managing money, and they have a significant impact on our overall financial well-being.

At this point, ask yourself a few questions to evaluate your current position: • How financially healthy are you?

• What are your current financial habits?

• Do you need to change your behaviour when it comes to managing money?

Personally, I don’t advise clients to set New Year’s resolutions as most people approach them in a way that isn’t sustainable for long-term change. Instead, I encourage focusing on building habits. Too often, New Year’s resolutions are vague—such as ‘save more money’—and focus solely on the outcome (e.g., more money saved) rather than on creating the habits needed to achieve that outcome (e.g., saving 10% of one’s salary every month). Hence, the focus should be on progress over perfection.

In conclusion, cultivating strong financial habits can secure longterm financial success. By consistently tracking your money, adhering to your budget, reducing your debt, creating and reviewing your financial plan, and supplementing your income, you can take control of your finances and live with confidence.

Remember, small, consistent actions over time lead to significant results. As the saying goes, “How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.” This metaphor applies perfectly here—start today, track your progress, and make the necessary adjustments to stay on course.

The 21/90 rule suggests that it takes 21 days to form a new habit and 90 days to establish a permanent lifestyle change. With discipline and a clear plan, I am confident you can build the financial habits that will empower you to achieve the life you envision.

Here are my top 5 financial habits: 1. Track Your Finances I cannot emphasise the importance of this one enough. When it comes to finances, ignorance is not bliss. We can only manage what we measure. A good place to start is by reviewing your bank statements. This simple exercise will help you identify your financial trends (for example, that daily cup of coffee) and pinpoint areas where you can cut back on expenses to save toward your financial goals.

2. Create a Budget Creating a budget is important; however, sticking to that budget is even more crucial. A budget helps you gain control over your finances and avoid overspending, while ensuring that you allocate funds to your most important financial goals—whether that’s saving, investing, or paying off debt.

3. Reduce Your Debt This is a critical financial habit that contributes to stability. To cultivate this habit, I recommend starting by prioritising highinterest debts—such as credit cards—using the avalanche method.

This strategy involves paying off the debt with the highest interest rate first while continuing to make minimum payments on all other debts and increasing repayments whenever possible.

Through this partnership, her work gained recognition, her earnings improved, and she was able to provide for her family and invest

in her child’s education. Initially sold only in Mozambique, these handcrafted products have now reached international markets, creating a ripple effect of economic empowerment. Supporting women like Assucena is at the heart of WhatWeCherish, nurturing sustainable change through entrepreneurship.

Green Beginnings: How Recycling is Inspiring Change on Campus

nvironmental education is receiving a refreshing boost in rural Mpumalanga and the Free State, thanks to a new partnership between the Good Work Foundation (GWF) and Fibre Circle. This collaboration is turning the idea of recycling into a daily habit for staff, learners, teachers and principals across GWF’s school network, and it’s already sparking a change in how communities view waste.

In February, representatives from Fibre Circle visited GWF’s Hazyview Digital Learning Campus to launch a project designed to encourage sustainable waste disposal. Fibre Circle has donated 36 waste bins along with other essential materials to kick-start the separation of waste—plastic, paper, tin and glass—across six GWF campuses. The recyclable materials will be collected and processed, with the resulting rebates used to reward GWF’s hardworking cleaning and gardening staff, the project’s dedicated “champions.”

Musa Mokoena, GWF’s head of campus operations, explains that many of the foundation’s campuses lie close to the Kruger National Park. “It’s critical to instil an appreciation for nature conservation and to encourage sustainable habits in the communities around us,” she says. “We discovered that consistent environmental education is scarce in these areas, so we were looking for a project that would not only leave a positive footprint on the environment but also teach everyone— staff and students alike—how to dispose of waste correctly.”

The initiative has quickly captured the imagination of the local schools within GWF’s network, which spans 29 government primary schools as well as associated high schools. Mokoena notes that the local schools are thrilled with the project and are already planning to use the recycling rebates to fund school beautification and learner nutrition projects. “They aren’t just doing the right thing by filling the bins with recyclable waste; they are also discovering opportunities for entrepreneurship and revenue generation within the green economy,” she adds.

Fibre Circle, a producer responsibility organisation for the paper and packaging industry, is committed to keeping renewable and recyclable paper products out of South Africa’s landfills. Charmaine Maphosa, Fibre Circle’s community relations and education officer, describes the partnership with GWF as a “strategic and passiondriven alliance.” She explains that GWF’s extensive reach within primary schools and its commitment to recycling perfectly complement Fibre Circle’s focus on environmental sustainability.

“By providing recycling bins and promoting awareness among learners, employees and students, we are creating a chain reaction that will hopefully lead to even greater outcomes,” she says. “Our collaboration is nurturing future environmental ambassadors, diverting recyclable waste from landfills, and demonstrating our commitment to a sustainable future.”

The project is about more than just waste management—it is a lesson in sustainability that empowers communities with the knowledge of recycling’s crucial role in environmental conservation.

As Maphosa emphasises, “Sustainability is a lifestyle choice that benefits future generations. We have a responsibility to improve the environment for those who come after us.”

This initiative is a reminder that small changes, when embraced collectively, can have a significant impact. For working moms, educators and community leaders alike, it offers a tangible way to contribute to a healthier, greener future for our children and the world they will inherit.

For Ally Hlatshwayo, who has tended the garden at GWF’s Huntington Digital Learning Campus since 2017, the recycling project is a welcome opportunity for growth. “I’m excited about this project because it creates jobs and helps us keep our campus, schools and community clean and healthy,” she remarks. “I’m learning new things, as I hadn’t realised that we could recycle our paper, glass and plastic. We’re no longer going to dump or burn waste—we’re going to recycle it.”

Growing Hope: How Earthchild Project’s School Gardens are Transforming Education in Khayelitsha

n the heart of Khayelitsha, something remarkable is taking root. The Earthchild Project (ECP), a Cape Town-based non-profit organisation, is turning school spaces into thriving gardens that nourish both bodies and minds. As the 2025 school year gets underway, two flourishing school gardens—launched in 2024—are already making a significant impact. These green havens are not only supplementing daily school meals but also providing hands-on learning opportunities for young children.

Now, thanks to the generous support of Nevermined Diamonds, a long-time supporter and donor of ECP, the initiative is expanding. Yomelela Primary School will soon join the movement, becoming the third school in Khayelitsha to benefit from this transformative programme.

Tackling Food Insecurity, One Garden at a Time Food security remains one of South Africa’s most pressing challenges, with many children depending on school feeding schemes for their primary meals.

ECP’s school gardens address this issue head-on by supplying fresh, nutrient-rich produce to support daily meal programmes. Over the past few months, the gardens at Sakumlandela and Ntwasahlobo Primary Schools have yielded impressive results: Over 160 kilograms of fresh vegetables harvested in a single month.

Teachers and learners alike have embraced them, finding moments of peace and connection with nature during their busy school days.
