The Art of Confidence: Taryn K’s Passion for Beauty & Empowerment
For Taryn K, beauty is more than just skin deep—it’s about confidence, empowerment, and the joy of transformation. As a makeup artist with 14 years of experience in hair, makeup, and nails, she considers it an honour to be part of her clients’ special moments. “I love seeing the excitement in their eyes when they realize how beautiful they truly are. That moment of self-recognition is priceless,” she shares. For Taryn, each application of makeup is a chance to bring out the inner confidence that lies within her clients.
Her love for beauty started early. Always drawn to dressing up and enhancing her own features, Taryn developed an early fascination with all things beauty. She would spend hours experimenting with makeup and creating new looks, not just for herself, but for herfriendsandfamily. “I’ve always been a girly girl, and I love making women feel beautiful,” she recalls. “It’s about more than just makeup—it’s about bringing out the confidence that’s already inside them.” Thispassion for beauty and creativity naturally led her to pursue a career in makeup artistry, where she could help others feel just as beautiful as she knew they were.
Like many in the industry, Taryn has faced the challenge of seasonal fluctuations in business. But through persistence and the power of word-ofmouth, she has built a solid reputation that keeps her booked throughout the year. “At first, it was tough, but I stayed consistent,” she admits.
“Now, my clients come back because they trust me, and that’s the best feeling.” She’s learned that success doesn’thappenovernight;it’stheresultofhardwork, determination, and staying true to her craft. Taryn’s ability to build lasting relationships with her clients has played a huge role in keeping her business thriving.
Her career has been filled with unforgettable moments, from seeing her work featured on magazine covers to meeting incredible people along the way. These milestones are meaningful to her, but the relationships she’s built with clients and colleagues have been the true rewards of her career. “Rapport is everything in my business. When you connect with people, they keep coming back—not just for the service but for the experience,” she says. Building that trust and connection with her clients has been key to her continued success.
Balancing work and personal life require discipline, and Taryn swears by one tool: her diary. “My diary is my life! I write everything down, from work commitments to family time. That way, I never forget the things that matter,” she explains. Scheduling everything from her work appointments to quality family time helps her stay organised and ensures that she remains present in every aspect of her life.
For those just starting out in business, Taryn has one golden piece of advice: “Consistency is key! You’ll most likely only start reaping the benefits after five years. Give yourself those five years to learn, make mistakes, and grow. It’s all part of the process.” She firmly believes that setbacks are just setups for success.
“Failure isn’t an end—it’s a lesson. Without failure, there’s no success. It’s what builds you and your business,” she states. This mindset has helped her embrace every challenge and use it as an opportunity to learn and grow.
Looking ahead, Taryn knows that in the beauty industry, there’s no limit to growth. “There are far too many avenues to explore before you can ever say you’ve failed. As long as you stay consistent, the rewards will come,” she says with confidence. Whether it’s mastering new techniques or expanding her services, Taryn remains focused on continual growth and improvement.

Jenny Panayiotou: Building Wrapped In Love, One Memory Blanket at a Time
Four years ago, Jenny Panayiotou, a solo mompreneur with a background in corporate marketing, set out on a transformative path that would redefine her life. It all started with her daughter’s 16th birthday. Like many parents, Jenny wanted to give her daughter something truly special—a gift that would carry meaning far beyond its material value. She came across "letter to my daughter" blankets online and immediately fell in love with the idea. But when she saw the price tag, she knew paying retail wasn’t an option.
Instead of settling for less, Jenny decided to create theblanketherself.Shedesignedandprintedherown version, not realizing at the time that this simple act wouldsparkanideaforabusiness.Friendsandfamily encouraged her to take her creation further, and before she knew it, Wrapped In Love was born.
Wrapped In Love specializes in personalized memory blankets, designed to celebrate life’s milestones and convey heartfelt messages. Jenny quickly learned that these blankets were rarely purchased for the buyer themselves. Instead, they were often gifted to loved ones for milestone birthdays, anniversaries, or special occasions. What makes these blankets truly remarkable is the emotional response they evoke. Customers frequently share stories of tears and heartfelt gratitude when their loved ones receive such a deeply personal gift.
Jenny’s corporate marketing experience equipped her with the skills to establish and grow her online business, but running Wrapped In Love was an entirelydifferentchallenge. "I never thought I could be self-employed," sheadmits. “It still catches me off guard each month that I’m able to earn a salary doing something I love.”
Faith, Family, and Fulfillment: How Tabisa Madonela Turns Passion into Purpose
Balancing a thriving career, multiple businesses, and familylifeisnosmallfeat, butforTabisaMadonela,it’s a calling she embraces wholeheartedly. As a Senior Quality Assurance Engineer, an entrepreneur, a mentor, and a dedicated pastor’s wife, she seamlessly blends her passions with purpose, proving that with faith and intentionality, success can be both fulfilling and impactful.
Tabisa’s path is a testament to the power of perseverance, creativity, and divine purpose. “I’ve always believed that God equips us with everything we need—we just have to recognise it and take action,” she shares. From coding software to mentoring women and designing apparel that spreads the gospel, every step of her career and business ventures has been guided by her deep faith and a commitment to uplifting others.
Her career in IT began with software development, but it didn’t take long for her analytical mind to lead her into quality assurance. “I’m naturally an observer, always looking for ways to improve things,” she explains. This ability to evolve and adapt has been a driving force behind her success. But her creativity couldn’t be confined to the tech world alone. Promoted Designs, her graphic design business, was born out of a passion for visual storytelling. Without formal training, she turned her artistic instincts into a successful business, designing branding materials that capture the essence of her clients' visions.
Her second business, Totally Sould, carries a mission close to her heart—spreading the gospel through custom-printed apparel. What started as a pastime during pregnancy grew into a thriving brand, proving that sometimes, the most unexpected moments birth the greatest ideas.
One of the driving forces behind Wrapped In Love’s success is Jenny’s commitment to exceptional customer service and building trust in the digital marketplace. She knows how difficult it can be for people to trust online sellers, especially with so many stories of scams and disappointments. Jenny has made it her mission to ensure her customers feel valued and confident in their purchases. From meticulous quality control to reliable delivery, she’s built a reputation for excellence and integrity.
Like many mompreneurs, Jenny wears multiple hats. She’s not only the creative force behind the designs but also the bookkeeper, strategist, driver, and sales manager for the business. Despite the challenges, she’s grateful for the flexibility her business provides and the chance to spend quality time with her family. "I don’t need to build an empire," she says. “I’m blessed with the freedom and fulfillment this business offers.”
Jenny is also quick to credit her team of women suppliers, whose expertise and dedication have been instrumentalinWrappedInLove’sgrowth.Shehopes to expand her reach by collaborating with other moms who run complementary businesses in niches like pet care, weddings, and bereavement services.
At its heart, Wrapped In Love is about more than just blankets. It’s about creating meaningful connections and giving people a way to share love, even when separated by distance. For Jenny Panayiotou, that’s the true reward of her entrepreneurial journey.
Juggling multiple roles—career professional, entrepreneur, wife, and mother of three energetic boys—comes with its challenges. She also cherishes the steadfast support of her husband, reflecting on how supportive and encouraging he is because truly without his support she doesn’t think she’d be able to achieve so much. Time management remains the biggest hurdle, but she’s learned to approach it with strategyandgrace. “I plan my days and weeks carefully, ensuring I allocate time to what truly matters,” shesays.
Saturdays are sacred for family, and open communication with clients ensures she never overcommits. For Tabisa, resilience isn’t just about pushing through—it’s about knowing when to pause and realign. From transitioning into a new field in IT to growing two businesses from sheer passion and faith, Tabisa’s proudest achievements aren’t just measured in accolades but in impact. “My businesses started with what I had in my hand—creativity and a desire to serve. Watching them grow beyond my expectations has been a true testimony of God’s provision.” Her advice to working mothers and aspiring entrepreneurs is simple yet profound: “You are the right person for the task—don’t let self-doubt steal your purpose.” Sheemphasizestheimportanceof patience, goal setting, and celebrating small wins along the way.
The road ahead is filled with promise. In her career, she’s on track for a leadership role—one that will allow her to mentor and uplift others in the tech space. For her businesses, the next step is expansion, including hiring interns and creating opportunities for young creatives. Through it all, Tabisa remains anchored in faith, purpose, and a steadfast belief in the power of community. “Success is not just about what we achieve but about who we empower along the way.”
Her story is a powerful reminder that when passion meets purpose, the possibilities are limitless.

The Anniversary of How Nadia Gamieldien Life Changed Forever
"Allah knows best." ForNadiaGamieldien, thisfamiliar phrase took on a deeply personal meaning when her life changed in ways she could never have predicted.
As a seasoned freelance radio presenter, Nadia had always been dedicated to her work, her family, and her community. She was thriving in her career and exploring her identity on a personal level, participating in a self-discovery course that was supposed to last five months but extended into an intense and transformative 11 months.
The course opened doors she hadn’t anticipated, uncovering aspects of herself that were both challenging and enlightening. But nothing could have prepared her for what lay ahead.
The turning point came suddenly. Just the night before, Nadia had been celebrating her sister’s birthday over dinner, feeling happy and carefree. By the next day, she was in the hospital, where doctors discovered an 11.5 cm tumor on her adrenal gland—a discovery that would change the course of her life.
Initially unaware of the severity of her condition, Nadia soon found herself under the care of Dr. Abdullah at GMC, whose kindness and compassion helped ease her fears. A week later, she was sitting in front of Professor Paneri, an expert in his field, who confirmed that the tumor was critical and required immediate surgery. The news was overwhelming. Nadia’s life, which she had so carefully planned, came to an abrupt halt.
The timing couldn’t have been more difficult. It was just before Ramadan, a sacred time Nadia cherished. Known for her meticulous planning, she usually had everything—down to Eid outfits—sorted well in advance. But now, she found herself sitting alone in a hospital room during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, grappling with the weight of her diagnosis.
The anaesthetist’s warning was clear: as a chronic hypertensive patient, Nadia’s surgery was high-risk. Hearing this, she broke down in tears, feeling a wave of fear and isolation. Yet, in her darkest moment, she experienced an unexplainable warmth and comfort that calmed her spirit.
When the time came for the operation, panic set in. Nadiasufferedananxietyattack, closinghereyesand

Her hospital stay was a period of deep reflection and gratitude. Friends and family visits lifted her spirits, and even small, unexpected moments—like spilled McDonald’s Coke on the hospital floor—became memories etched in her heart. She shared food and kindness with nurses and other patients, building connections that reminded her of the beauty of human compassion.

In that moment, Nadia wasn’t sure how to move forward. But her family, along with one very special individual, reminded her that she had been given a second chance. Nadia found strength in her faith and beganherrecoverywitharenewedsenseofpurpose.
That year’s Ramadan was unlike any other. Nadia described it as an indescribable, transformative experience—a time of spiritual awakening and gratitude.
As the months passed, Nadia realized she no longer wanted her life to return to the way it was. Normal was no longer enough. Instead, she craved peace, happiness, kindness, and love. Her priorities shifted, and she made the decision to live her life for herself and her own fulfillment.
Today, Nadia is a survivor, a fighter, and a woman determined to make the most of her second chance. As an adopted child, a mother of four, and a divorced woman juggling three jobs to support her family, she carries her journey with strength and dignity.
"Thank you, Ya Allah, for the gift of life," she says.Alhamdulillah.

The Dreamer's Point, A Refuge into Disappearance
By Sidharth P K (Kochi)
"I dare you to disappear, for certainty's sake," declared tech giant Elon Musk, challenging others to step into the unknown.
Sidharth P K
Time rotates like a sundial, casting reflections upon my very being. It embodies an optimistic view even of the most obscure moments. As idealism and creative spirit swirled through my mind, I recalled defining moments in history— the legendary tales of figures like Christopher Columbus and Alexander the Great, who defied time and tide in equal measure. Their stories offer three essential lessons: have the courage to pursue your dreams, never look back, and persist relentlessly toward success. My mother has known me well since I began writing. She is the wellspring of my ideas; I inherited my creative spirit from her—my thoughts, my heart, and my life. Every stage of my journey has been touched and inspired by her divine influence. She agreed to my wish, and I planned accordingly. The idea of vanishing from my everyday life, from my usual social circles, was both novel and shrouded in mystery.
It all began on July 8, 2024: I simply vanished— not as a sinister act reminiscent of Jack the Ripper or the atrocities of Nazi Germany, but as a personal experiment. The notion of withdrawing and playing the cards of fate is
both intriguing and nerve-wracking. Over the ensuingfourmonths,Iembracedthischallenge and explored new potentials. The first two months were dedicated to redefining my literary voice and extending its reach across various parts of India. I still struggle to grasp the reality of it all—a chance to soar, while others, like my cousins and family members, had always taken flight, but not me. Thus, my poetry took to the skies, touching nineteen states in India during July and August, as my pen and I forged bold inroads into the literary landscape.
I travelled with my dreams and the raw intensity of my emotions, immersing myself in newspapers, journals, and embracing the freedom to be myself. As my journey gained momentum, the horizon revealed its first glimmer of light on my poetry. I then ventured to Europe and crossed the diverse landscapes of Africa, flowing through the heart of the Bosporus to reach Istanbul, and eventually findingsolaceinNorthAmerica.Findingrefuge in this new world, even as a solitary wanderer, proved both challenging and transformative. I embraced the challenge with a kinder spirit, encouraged by my mother’s steadfast support throughout the journey. Despite her own busy schedule, she stood by me as I viewed each hurdle as an opportunity for continuous growth.

Cariema Isaacs Reinvents Cape Malay Cooking
By Elize Fisher
Cariema Isaacs isn’t your typical food writer. Based between Cape Town and Dubai, she brings the warmth of South African heritage to every dish she creates. A culinary diploma from the International Centre for CulinaryArtsinDubaiandabackgroundinmarketinglaidthe foundation for a vibrant career that spans writing, cooking, and entrepreneurship. Now semi-retired and firmly rooted in Cape Town, Cariema has made it her mission to share her passion for food through her popular blog and a series of celebrated cookbooks.
Her journey into cookbook writing began in 2016 with a heartfelt tribute to her late father—a collection of recipes inspired by memories of growing up in Bo-Kaap, the colourful Cape Malay Quarter of Cape Town. Over the years, her love for spices, bold flavours, and the traditions of Cape Malay cooking led her to publish three more cookbooks, each capturing a unique chapter of her culinary life. Now, with her latest release, Modern Cape Malay Cooking, Cariema invites readers into her kitchen and her heart as she celebrates the rich heritage and evolving flavours of Cape Malay cuisine.
In Modern Cape Malay Cooking, food becomes the language of gratitude and connection. Cariema lovingly explains that the Cape Malay love for food is almostlikeadailyprayer—awayofsaying thank you for the abundance of life. This cookbook is a tribute to her mum, a woman who embodied the essence of a Cape Malay domestic goddess. Cariema recalls how her mother would transform a simple table into a vibrant celebration during Eid, her hands skilfully rolling out layers of pastry in what seemed like a beautifully choreographed dance. That memory is the heartbeat of Modern Cape Malay Cooking—a modern twist on time-honoured recipes that remain spicy, saucy, and bursting with flavour.
For Cariema, cooking is not just about following a recipe; it’s a mindful practice that connects her to her roots and to the people who have shaped her. Each dish in her new book is an invitation to experience a piece of Cape Malay heritage—whether it’s preparing a comforting pasta with a twist or experimenting with a quick stir-fry infused with local spices. The recipes blend modern ingredients and global influences with traditional techniques, creating a fusion that resonates with the millennial palate. Inspired by the idea of truly living, she left the corporate world behind and embarked on an unforgettable sabbatical—a journey that took her to Indonesia and Malaysia. There, she traced her culinary heritage back to the Spice Islands and visited Tidore and Makassar, islands that hold a piece of the history of Cape Malay forefathers. This voyage not only reconnected her with her roots but also reenergised her passion for food and storytelling.
Cariema offers a message of empowerment to fellow working moms and aspiring authors alike. She believes that no one can tell your story as authentically as you can. Drawing inspiration from a favourite quote by Paulo Coelho— “a ship is safest at the shore, but that is not what ships are built for”—she encourages everyone to leave their comfort zones and embrace the vast possibilities that life has to offer. For Cariema, every recipe is a story, and every meal is an opportunity to celebrate heritage, family, and the simple joy of cooking with intention.

Recognising the Cycle
Change starts with awareness. To break a pattern, youhavetorecogniseit.
Emotional eating: Reaching for food when you’re overwhelmed, anxious, or exhausted—not because you’re hungry, but because it offers a momentary senseofrelief.
Burnout as a badge of honor: Feeling like if you’re notexhausted, youhaven’tworkedhardenough.
Self-care as an afterthought: Pushingyourselftothe pointwhererestisn’tachoice,it’sforcedonyouby illness,injury,orsheerburnout.
An unsupportive environment: Staying in social circles, workplaces, or family dynamics that reinforceunhealthyhabits.

It Ends With Us:
Breaking the Cycle of Unhealthy Habits & Choosing to Heal.
By Candace Feinberg
There comes a moment in every woman’s life when she looks around and asks: How did I get here? The exhaustion, the stress, the late nights running on caffeineandsheerwillpower. The habits that started as survival mechanisms but somehow became a lifestyle. The constant pressure to juggle everything, to be everything—to work hard, love hard, and still make sure everyone else is okay. But what about you?
As working mothers, we are masters of endurance. We push through fatigue, ignore warning signs, and convince ourselves that the next holiday, the next break, the next milestone will be when we finally take care of ourselves. But here’s the thing— waiting for the perfect time
Food isn’t the enemy. But for many of us, it’s been turned into one— something to control, something to fear, something to comfort us when nothing else can.
Shiftingfrompunishmenttonourishmentstartswithasking:Howdo I want to feel? Energised? Strong? Focused?
That answer should guide your choices—not guilt, not diet culture, not the need for quick relief.
Startbyaddingmoreofwhatmakesyoufeelgood:whole, nourishing foods that fuel your energy instead of draining it. Don’t overcomplicate, just start with one meal, one snack, one mindful moment where you listen to what your body is telling you it needs.
2. Redefine Rest
Rest isn’t lazy. Rest is essential. Yet, we have been conditioned to believe that slowing down is a weakness.
The reality? Your body is speaking to you all the time. Fatigue isn’t something to push through, it’s a message. Chronic headaches, bloating, anxiety, mood swings—your body is constantly trying to communicate. Are you listening?
If the only time you let yourself rest is when you’re sick, your body will find a way to slow you down. Ask me, I know all about it! Instead of waiting for that breaking point, build in micro-moments of rest: a five-minute break, deep breathing between meetings, saying no to things that drain you.
3. Audit Your Circle
The people around you shape your habits more than you realise. If your environment normalises skipping meals, numbing stress with alcohol, or treating exhaustion as normal—you will keep absorbing those behaviours. It doesn’t mean cutting people off— it means choosing your influences carefully. Seeking spaces where prioritising health, joy, and balance is the norm.
4. Ditch the “All or Nothing” Mentality
Perfectionism keeps you stuck. If you believe you have to do everything right or not at all, you’ll never start.
Healing happens in the messy middle—in the skipped workouts that don’t derail progress, in the imperfect meals that still nourish, in the days when you show up for yourself even when it’s not pretty. Start small. One better choice at a time. Because all progress counts.
means it never comes. And so, thecyclecontinues.
Untilwechoosetobreakit.
Lessons from 'It Ends With Us' –Breaking Cycles
The recent release of the movie “It Ends With Us”, based on the book by Colleen Hoover, has reignited conversations around breaking cycles—whether they be in relationships, mindsets, or deeply ingrained habits. Yes, the drama surrounding the film’s stars has made headlines, but it doesn’t take away from the raw, honest truth the story highlights: change is hard, even frightening, butnecessary. Many of us are trapped in our own cycles—not necessarily of toxic relationships, but of selfneglect, unhealthy coping mechanisms, and burnout. We learn these patterns, often subconsciously, from our environments, our families, and the pressures of modern motherhood.
But just like in the book, there comes a moment when we decide: This ends with me.
Your Health is Not a Luxury—It’s an Act of Resistance
For too long, we’ve been told that taking care of ourselves is selfish. But what if self-careisactuallythemostradicalthing you can do? Because when a woman decides to break the cycle—when she chooses rest, nourishment, boundaries— she changes everything. She sets a new standard for her children. She redefines what it means to be strong. She proves that being well isn’t a privilege—it’s a right. So, this is the moment. The moment you decide that the patterns you inherited stop with you.
The moment you choose to stop waiting for the perfect time and start where you are. The moment you choose healing. Because it can end with you.

Overcoming a Genetic Predisposition to Obesity: Expert
Insights for a Healthier Future
By Staff Writer
WorkingMama readers know that balancing work, family, and self-care is a daunting challenge. With World Obesity Day on 4 March reminding us of the growing global challenge of obesity, experts are highlighting that although our genes can influence our body weight, lifestyle choices remainvital.
The Genetics–Lifestyle Connection
Ingrid Singels, Marketing Manager for Pharma Dynamics’ Scientific Division, explains that obesity is the result of a complex interplay of genetic, environmental and behavioural factors. She notes that while certain genes have been linked to a higher body mass index (BMI) and waist-to-hip ratio—affecting fat storage, food metabolism and satiety—genetics alone do not sealourfate.“Researchclearlyshowsthatwhat we eat, how active we are and even our sleep patterns can either magnify or help counteract ourgeneticpredispositions,”sheemphasises.
Evidence from Across the Globe
Recent studies add weight to these observations. A 2025 study from Nepal1 found that regular physical activity plays a critical role in preventing obesity and type 2 diabetes, with sedentary lifestyles emerging as a significant risk factor. This reinforces the global recommendation of at least 150 minutes of moderateexerciseperweek.
In another breakthrough, a Swedish study published in January 2025 in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA)2 analysed data from over 6,700 children aged 6 to 17 who underwent at least a year of obesity treatment. The study revealed that early interventioninchildhoodnotonlycurbsobesity but also reduces the risk of developing cardiometabolic issues—such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension and high cholesterol—in youngadulthood.
Adding a new dimension, emerging research from China3 has spotlighted the link between our circadian rhythms—the body’s natural clock regulating sleep and wake cycles—and obesity. By aligning mealtimes and sleep with our biological rhythms, there appears to be potential to improve metabolism and gut health, thus aiding in obesity prevention.
Tackling Socio-Economic Barriers
Singels also draws attention to a critical but often overlooked factor: socio-economic disparity. While many communities continue to struggle with hunger, lower-income areas are increasingly burdened by obesity. Financial inequality often leads to ‘food deserts’, where affordable, nutritious options are scarce and cheaper,ultra-processedfoodsprevail.Coupled with unequal access to healthcare, these challenges highlight the need for systemic changetoimprovehealthoutcomesforall.
Practical Strategies for Weight Management
For busy mums striving to maintain a healthy weight, here are some practical tips that can be wovenintoyoureverydayroutine:
Eat clean: Focus on whole foods such as fruits, vegetables, lean proteins and whole grains, while minimising processed items and sugary drinks. Consider swapping white bread and pasta for whole-grainalternativeslikeoatsandquinoa.
Avoid sugary drinks: Many soft drinks and fruit juices pack a hefty sugar load. Try replacing them withwater, unsweetenedsparklingwaterorherbal teas.
Chew slowly: Taking time to thoroughly chew your foodcanhelpreduceoverallcalorieintake.
Include cardio: Aim for 20–40 minutes of cardiovascular exercise on most days to help burn caloriesandboosthearthealth.
Incorporate strength training: Whether it’s lifting weights or bodyweight exercises, building muscle canhelpyouburnmorecaloriesandmaintainbone strength.
Stay hydrated: Drinking water not only supports metabolism but also helps manage hunger—try havingaglassbeforemeals.
Boost protein intake: Foods rich in protein, such as eggs, lean meats and legumes, help keep you fuller forlonger.
Track your meals: Keeping a food diary can help you stay accountable and make more mindful eating choices.
Practice mindful eating: Focusonyourmealwithout distractionstopreventovereating.

Embracing Personalised Nutrition
Many are now exploring personalised nutrition and genetic testing to guide their weight management journey. Tailoring nutritional plans to one’s genetic profile is an emerging approach that not only aids in weight control but also optimisesoverallhealthoutcomes.
A Call to Action
On World Obesity Day, the message was clear: while our genetic makeup may influence our susceptibility to obesity, it is our daily choices that shape our health destiny. By embracing balancednutrition, regularexerciseandmindful living—and by addressing broader socioeconomic challenges—we can all work towards ahealthierfuture.
For WorkingMama readers balancing multiple roles, these insights serve as a reminder that small, consistent changes can pave the way for lasting well-being. Let’s commit to making informed choices, not just for ourselves but for ourfamiliestoo.

From Heartbreak to Hope: The IVF Journey of Alice Dube-Tuyishim
By Johanne Kabiwa
For many working mums, the path to starting a family is lined with unexpected twists, moments of deep despair, and ultimately, the sweet taste of hope. This is the story of Alice Dube-Tuyishime’s emotional journey through IVF—a rollercoaster of challenges and triumphs that reshaped her understanding of resilience, determination, andthepowerofsupport.
Alice’s journey began in March 2023, when her first IVF cycle ended in heartbreak. Out of 24 eggs, only one embryo developed—a result that leftherfeelingdevastated.Thedailyinjections,an unavoidable part of the process, were both physically taxing and emotionally draining. “It was awhirlwindofemotions,”Alicerecalls.Despitethe initial setback, she refused to give up. After taking a brief pause to regain her strength, May 2023 brought renewed hope. This time, 11 embryos were fertilised, and six healthy ones were stored for future use. Yet, as the day of the pregnancy test approached, every moment was marked by agonising uncertainty. Early negative results struck hard, leaving her spirit bruised but determined.
Alice’s journey with IVF was punctuated by moments of overwhelming fear, particularly during the daily injections. The very first time was especiallydaunting—ittookhernearly30minutes to muster the courage to proceed. Yet, undeterred, she faced her fear of needles again in June 2023. Each injection, while a battle against anxiety, marked a step closer to her dream of motherhood. “Every moment of fear overcome was a small victory that reminded me of my strength,”shereflects.
Deciding to pursue IVF was not an easy decision. After a year of trying to conceive naturally following her wedding in September 2021, and facing a series of negative pregnancy tests, Alice and her husband realised that something was amiss. Despite undergoing numerous tests that showed everything appeared normal, it was only after a referral to a gynaecologist—and a subsequenthysterosalpingogram(HSG)—thatthe truth emerged: her fallopian tubes were blocked on both sides. “I remember crying for hours when I learned that natural conception might never be possible for us,” she recalls. However, with the clarity provided by this diagnosis, the couple immediately sought a referral to a fertility specialist, recognising that IVF was their best chancetostartafamily.
Throughout this arduous journey, Alice found solace in connecting with support groups and other women undergoing IVF. Sharing experiences and reading about others’ struggles and successes helped her realise she was not
alone. This sense of solidarity provided reassurance and built a vital network that eased theweightofthemostchallengingdays.
Balancing the physical and emotional demands of IVF was an enormous challenge—especially while managing the pressures of a full-time job in Child Protection. The hormonal treatments and daily injections left her feeling constantly exhausted, while the emotional highs and lows tested her mental fortitude. To cope, Alice prioritised selfcare by incorporating regular gym sessions, focusing on nutritious meals, staying wellhydrated, and taking moments for mindfulness exercises throughout her day. Equally important was the steadfast support of her husband and close friends, whose encouragement allowed her tofaceeachhurdlewithrenewedhope.
A common misconception she encountered was that IVF is a guaranteed route to pregnancy. In reality, many factors—egg and sperm quality, age, hormonal balance, and overall health—play a criticalroleindeterminingsuccess.Experiencinga failed cycle was a stark reminder that, despite followingeveryprotocol, successisneverassured. This experience reinforced the need for realistic expectations and emotional preparedness, prompting Alice to advocate for transparency in fertilitytreatments.
Choosing the right fertility clinic was also crucial. Extensive research—comparing costs, success rates, and patient testimonials—guided Alice’s decision. Despite the occasional inconvenience of long journeys, the expertise of her chosen specialist and the clinic’s excellent reputation outweighed the challenges of travel. The supportive relationship she developed with her fertility doctor, whose reassuring presence and humour during stressful appointments eased her anxiety, proved fundamental in shaping her positiveexperience.
Alice’sheartfeltadvicetoothercouplesfacingIVF is simple yet profound: prioritise mutual support, maintainopencommunication, andneverhesitate to seek professional guidance when needed. Balancing work, IVF treatments, and family responsibilities is challenging, but with flexibility, self-care, and a supportive network, every small stepforwardisavictory.
In sharing her journey on platforms like TikTok, Alice has touched many within the Black and African communities, inspiring others to confront fertility challenges with honesty and hope. Her story reminds us that even when the road seems darkest, each challenge can open the door to new beginnings, encouraging couples to embrace their journey and look forward to the promise of tomorrow.
Work-life Balance! Parental Burnout
By Nayan Rath
Iam a mom by day and a zombie by night, juggling it all. My inner voice insists: "Work hard, mom, harder!" I may be burnt out, but I still manage to shine. My daily struggle centres on meeting work deadlines and handling meltdowns athome. Raisingkidsisincredible— like running a marathon with an invisible finish line. The neverending to-do list, soccer practices, doctor appointments, parentteacher meetings, and family dinners lead to chronic physical and emotional exhaustion. In the chaos of it all, there’s hardly any time left forme.
Oh! we always end up coming last on the priority list. If you are constantly drained and feeling guilty, you may be experiencing burnout. It is crucial to pause and recalibrate before burnout completelyovertakesyou. Trustme, work-life balance is not about perfection but about making deliberate choices that support your well-being while you fulfil your responsibilities.
Ways to Prevent Burnout
My three-step mantra is: Trust – Delegate – Unburden. Divide tasks, share the load, and allow yourself to breatheeasy.Bespecificwhenaskingforhelp—askyour neighbourtospendsometimewithyourchildorrequest that grandparents assist with homework. Maintain a backup support system and rotate tasks with clear expectations; always express gratitude when someone stepsin.
Special ‘Me’ Time
Remembertoputonyourownoxygenmaskbeforehelpingothers. Avoid burning the candle at both ends; there’s a ticking time bomb of burnout waiting to explode. Start early and regularly schedule "me time" in your calendar. This will positively impact both your healthandyourpersonalrelationships.Remember,yourwell-being mattersmost.
Setting Boundries
Ifyourliferevolvessolelyaroundyourchild'sdesires, demands, and hobbies, you end up doing everything yourself—this approach neither proves your love nor truly benefits your children. Allow them to learn the difference between responsibility and dependence, andbetweenaccountabilityandentitlement.Establish firmboundariesforbothyourchildrenandyouatworkandsetclear expectations with colleagues. Teach your children to respect your workschedulewhileensuringqualityfamilytime.Learntosaynoto extracommitmentsthatdrainyouandtakecontrolofyourlife.
Prioritise your tasks to prevent overwhelm. Use the 4D Rule: Do important and urgent tasks first (often those that take around five minutes), delegate less critical tasks, defer what isn’t urgent, and delete unnecessary commitments. Embrace imperfection—dishes can wait, but your mental peace cannot. Your home does not need to be spotless 24/7. Assign age-appropriate responsibilities to your children and redistribute the workload. Focus on what you can realistically achieve and resist the urge to tidy up every toy or clean your teenager's room immediately. Instead, involve them in the process and let them take pride in their contributions. Choose progress overperfection.
Significant changes do not require grand actions; start small. A short meditation or breathing exercise can create a pleasant shift in mood. Try a body scan meditation before bed, fully embracing the sensations in your body. This versatile practice helps to deeply cleanse the mind. Lie downinaquietspaceandinviteyour child to join you. Speak with a support group or trusted family members about your struggles. Remember, seeking help isn’t a weakness—it’s wisdom. The worst thatcanhappenistheysayno;it’sfar moreupliftingwhentheysayyes.
Remember, you’re not a one-woman army! You don't have to choose between work and family—you deserve a positive ecosystem and robustfamilysupporttosuccessfully balanceboth. In a separate bowl, combine the white vinegar, full-fat milk, and melted butter. Gently fold the wet ingredients into the egg mixture until you have a smooth batter. Coworking Spaces: Empowering Business Growth & Balancing Motherhood
By Joanne Bushell, MD, IWG Plc. South Africa
In today’s dynamic work environment, flexibilityisn’tjustabonus—it’sagame changer. Recent research by International Workplace Group reveals that 58% of knowledge workers now operate in a hybrid arrangement. For working moms juggling family life and careerambitions, coworkingspacesoffera smart solution that can both drive business expansion and create a healthier work-life balance.
For many companies, business expansion means growing their presence, reaching new customers, and boosting revenue. However, the traditional route—leasing permanentofficespace—oftencomeswith high costs and logistical headaches. This is where coworking offices step in as a flexible, cost-effective alternative. Rather thancommittingtoanoversizedofficejust in case you grow, coworking spaces allow you to pay only for the space you need at anygiventime.Thisadaptabilityisabreath of fresh air for busy working moms who understand that business needs can change as quickly as our daily schedules.
Consider the advantage of flexibility. Traditional office leases can be rigid, requiring long-term commitments and offering little room to adjust as your business evolves. With coworking spaces, adding or reducing space is simple. This means you can easily accommodate fluctuating team sizes without the stress of renegotiating lengthy contracts or dealing with unwanted expenses. For a working mama managing multiple roles, that kind of adaptability is invaluable.
Cost efficiency is another major draw. A permanent office can be a financial burden, especially when you’re paying for more space than you actually need. Coworking solutions let you align your expenses with your current headcount, saving you from costly upfront investments. When every penny counts— whether you’re reinvesting in your business or planning your family budget— the ability to control costs without compromising on quality is a huge advantage.
Beyond the savings, coworking spaces come packed with useful facilities. Instead of worrying about setting up meeting rooms, private booths, or breakout areas in your own office, coworking providers offer these amenities on demand. This means you get the full suite of office services without the hassle of managing them yourself. It’s a practical solution that helps you focus on what truly matters: growing your business and excelling in your role as a working mom.
Networking is also a natural part of the coworking experience. In a traditional office, you might only interact with your own colleagues. In a coworking environment, however, you have the chance to engage with professionals from various industries. This diversity not only sparks new ideas but can lead to valuable collaborations and partnerships. Whether you’re looking for mentorship, business advice, orsimplyafreshperspective, these spaces are a melting pot of inspiration.
For those considering expansion beyond your hometown, coworking spaces offer anothersignificantperk:geographicreach. Many leading providers have centres in multiple cities and even countries. This meansyoucanestablishapresenceinnew markets—likesettingupasatelliteofficein a different city—without the heavy upfront costs associated with a traditional lease. It’s a smart way to tap into new talent pools and expand your network across borders.
Employee wellbeing is a critical factor, too. Studies indicate that working from home can lead to feelings of isolation and increased stress, particularly among younger professionals. Coworking spaces provide a change of scenery, offering a communal atmosphere where remote workers can connect with like-minded individuals. For working moms, this can translate into improved mood, reduced stress, and better overall productivity.
Innovation often blossoms in an environment that encourages collaboration. Coworking spaces naturally bringtogethercreativethinkers,start-ups, and established professionals. The crosspollination of ideas that occurs in these settings can spark innovations that drive your business forward. It’s the kind of creative energy that can give your venture the extra push it needs to stand out in a competitive market.
Moreover, many coworking spaces offer additional support systems such as mentoring programs, workshops, and networking events. These resources can be particularly beneficial for small businesses and startups, helping you develop new skills and learn efficient ways to manage both time and stress. When support is just a conversation away, challenges become opportunities for growth.
Lastly, by eliminating the overhead costs associated with a traditional office—such as furniture, utilities, and maintenance— coworking spaces offer a more budgetfriendly option. This reduction in secondary costs means more funds can be channelled into areas that directly contribute to your business’s success and your family’s well-being.
For working moms striving to build their businesses while maintaining a fulfilling family life, coworking spaces aren’t just aboutfindingadesk—they’reaboutfinding a solution that supports growth, enhances productivity, and respects the realities of modern life. As hybrid work continues to reshape the way we approach our careers, exploring flexible coworking options could be the key to unlocking a brighter, more balanced future.

Accelerating Careers and Redefining Work: How Hybrid Work is Transforming Women's Professional Lives
By Joanne Bushell, MD, IWG Plc. South Africa
Arecent study by International Workplace Group has shed light on a game-changing shift in the way women are advancing their careers. As working moms, we know that juggling professional responsibilities with home life is a daily balancingact—andnow, research confirms that a more flexible work model isn’t just a perk, it’s a powerful tool for career growth and gender equality.
The study, which surveyed over 1,000 female professionals, found that nearly 64% of women feel that flexible working arrangements have directly boosted their career progression. Even more striking, over half of respondents (56%) credited these arrangements with helping them secure promotions intomoreseniorroles.Intoday’sfast-changingwork environment, hybrid work—where employees have the option to work from home, in local workspaces, oracentraloffice—hasemergedasacriticalfactorin levelling the professional playing field.
What stands out is that many women consider hybrid work to be almost twice as important as traditional benefits like parental leave. With 64% of women placing a higher value on the flexibility that hybrid work offers, it’s clear that having control over when and where we work is not just a convenience—it’s a catalyst for career advancement. This flexibility provides us with the space to manage our schedules more effectively, which is essential when balancing the demands of family life and professional ambitions.
For many working moms, the challenges of long commutes and rigid office hours have long been a barrier to success.
Thestudyhighlightedthat 75%ofrespondentsbelieve that working closer to home or in local workspaces is crucial for their professional growth. Reducing time
spent on lengthy commutes not only means more time with our families but also less stress and a higher quality of work life. In fact, 82% of women reported feeling more productive when given the freedom to choose their work environment.
These findings resonate deeply with many of us who have experienced firsthand the pressures of a conventional work setup. As one executive pointed out, companies that embrace flexible working models not only see improved productivity—by as much as 3% to 4% on average—but also benefit from a more engaged and loyal workforce. It seems that when businesses invest in creating flexible environments, they’re not just boosting their bottom line; they’re also empowering women to take charge of their careers.
Another critical insight from the research is that flexible work is playing a significant role in retaining female talent. About 68% of women stated that the ability to work flexibly has been a key factor in keeping them in the workforce, even when faced with the challenges of caretaking responsibilities. This is especially important in an era where many women are forced to choose between their careers and family obligations. By providing options that accommodate the complexities of our lives, hybrid work is helping more women stay in their roles and continue their professional journeys.
It’s worth noting that flexible work isn’t just about accommodatingpersonalneeds—it’salsoaboutcreating a more inclusive and supportive work culture. When companies prioritise flexibility, they send a clear message: our employees are valued not only for what they contribute at work but also for who they are outside of it. This mindset shift is crucial in promoting gender equality in the workplace. In fact, a previous study highlighted that companies with
higher representations of women—those in the top quartile with over 30% female representation—are significantly more likely to outperform their competitors financially.
Leaders in the industry are taking notice. Fatima Koning, Chief Commercial Officer at International WorkplaceGroup, remarkedthatthestudy “shines a light on the key role that flexible working opportunities can play in achieving parity. It’s a win-win situation— improving productivity, attracting top talent, and advancing women’s careers all at once.” Similarly, Mark Dixon, CEO of IWG, emphasised that “companies that embrace hybrid work not only gain a competitive edge in attracting and retaining female talent, but also benefit from enhanced productivity and lower operational costs.”
For us working moms, these findings are both encouraging and empowering. Flexible work isn’t merely an added benefit; it’s becoming a nonnegotiable aspect of our careers. With 84% of women saying that workplace flexibility is a crucial factor in choosing a new role, it’s evident that modern professionals are seeking environments that recognise the full spectrum of their lives. In our community, where the demands of motherhood and career often intersect, the promise of hybrid work is a hopeful step toward a more balanced, fulfilling future.
As we continue to address the challenges of modern work, it’s clear that embracing flexibility isn’t just good for our careers—it’s good for our lives. With options that support our professional growth and personal well-being, we can build careers that not only advance our ambitions but also honour our roles as mothers, partners, and individuals.

Hello 2025 –A New Year, A Fresh Opportunity to Transform Our Financial Habits
By Gitika Manilal
Personally,Ilovehowanewyearprovidesachancetoreassess our focus and establish habits that contribute to our overall well-being. As James Clear emphasises in his book Atomic Habits, setting good habits is a powerful way to achieve personal growth and lasting success. Furthermore, he argues that ‘small, consistent changes in habits can compound over time to produce remarkable results.’ The key takeaway here is: small, consistent changes.
As we all know that changing habits is not always easy; however, it is necessary to transform from your current self to your best self. Goodhabitscertainlyhelpusreachthegoalsweset, buttheydoso much more: they help us become the people who consistently succeed.
My focus as a financial planner is to help clients transform their financial habits. Financial habits are behaviours and routines related to managing money, and they have a significant impact on ouroverallfinancialwell-being.
At this point, ask yourself a few questions to evaluate your current position:
• How financially healthy are you?
• What are your current financial habits?
• Do you need to change your behaviour when it comes to managing money?
Personally, I don’t advise clients to set New Year’s resolutionsasmostpeopleapproachtheminawaythatisn’t sustainable for long-term change. Instead, I encourage focusing on building habits. Too often, New Year’s resolutions are vague—such as ‘save more money’—and focus solely on the outcome (e.g., more money saved) rather than on creating the habits needed to achieve that outcome (e.g., saving 10% of one’s salary every month). Hence, the focus should be on progress over perfection.
Here are my top 5 financial habits:
1. Track Your Finances
I cannot emphasise the importance of this one enough. When it comestofinances, ignoranceisnotbliss.Wecanonlymanagewhat we measure. A good place to start is by reviewing your bank statements.Thissimpleexercisewillhelpyouidentifyyourfinancial trends (for example, that daily cup of coffee) andpinpointareaswhere youcancutbackonexpensestosavetowardyourfinancialgoals.
2. Create a Budget
Creating a budget is important; however, sticking to that budget is even more crucial. A budget helps you gain control over your finances and avoid overspending, while ensuring that you allocate funds to your most important financial goals—whether that’s saving, investing, orpayingoffdebt.
3. Reduce Your Debt
This is a critical financial habit that contributes to stability. To cultivate this habit, I recommend starting by prioritising highinterest debts—such as credit cards—using the avalanche method. This strategy involves paying off the debt with the highest interest rate first while continuing to make minimum payments on all other debtsandincreasingrepaymentswheneverpossible.
4. Create a Financial Plan
Improving your financial planning habits starts with setting shortterm goals (e.g., saving for a vacation), medium-term goals (e.g., building a sustainable emergency fund), and long-term goals (e.g., retirementplanning). However, itdoesn’tendthere—reviewingand monitoring your progress periodically is vital. Consider reaching out to your planner for assistance if you are struggling or simply don’tknowwheretobegin.
5. Find Passive or Secondary Income
This habit allows you to be creative. Passive income is defined as earnings achieved with minimal active involvement—examples include investments, real estate, or business ventures. Although it often requires upfront effort, money, and time, it provides longterm financial stability. Income from these sources can also help reducedebtorcontributetoyouremergencyfund.

TheinspirationbehindWhatWeCherish stems from personal experience as both a mother and an entrepreneur. It is a platform built to celebrate Africa’s rich culturalheritagethroughhandcrafted, luxury products while supporting the women behind them. Across the continent, mothers take on dual roles—managing households while contributing significantly to the economy, particularly in agriculture, market trading,andsmall-scalemanufacturing.Many of these women juggle responsibilities that demand immense time and effort, yet they continue to create and sustain livelihoods throughtheircraftsmanship.
Understanding the realities of being a working mother, WhatWeCherish was founded as a space that values high-quality, sustainable products while uplifting the very women who make them. "I know what it feels like to chase a dream while holding a little hand in mine. That’s why I wanted to create a space where women don’t have to choose between being great mothers and successful entrepreneurs," says Melaney Oldenhof, founderofWhatWeCherish.
Balancing the roles of mother and entrepreneur requires careful planning, prioritisation, and adaptability. Setting clear schedules for both work and family helps maintain a healthy equilibrium, and having a strong support system is invaluable. The journey is not without its challenges—one of thebiggestbeingtimemanagement.Running a business while ensuring quality time with family is a constant adjustment, often accompanied by guilt. However, by setting clear boundaries, focusing on meaningful moments rather than long hours, and embracing flexibility, the balance becomes moremanageable.
As WhatWeCherish grows, its vision is to become a globally recognised platform for African luxury and lifestyle products, expanding its reach while maintaining its commitment to sustainability and cultural preservation.Futureplansincludeincreasing collaborations with African brands and artisans, enhancing retail presence both online and in physical locations, and establishing strong partnerships with industries such as hospitality and interior design. For working mothers pursuing their entrepreneurial dreams, several strategies can help steer through this journey. Having a clear vision and setting realistic goals is crucial, as is prioritising tasks and maintaining a structured plan. Surrounding oneself with a supportive network—whether through family, mentors, or a business community—can provide encouragement and assistance when needed. Accepting imperfection, delegating responsibilities, and taking time for self-care are also essential to maintaining productivity and well-being. Financialplanningplaysakeyroleinstability, ensuring that both personal and business expenses are well-managed. Seeking mentorship and learning from those who have navigated similar paths can provide valuableinsightsandguidance.
Finding quality time for family within a demanding schedule requires intentionality. Even with limited hours, making the moments spent together meaningful can strengthen relationships. Small rituals, such as shared meals or weekly activities, create lasting memories. Involving family in the business where possible can also cultivate a sense of connection and understanding. "I used to feel guilty about not spending every waking moment with my child, but I realised thatit’snotabouthowmanyhoursyouspend— it’s about how present you are in the moments that matter," saysMelaneyOldenhof.
At its core, WhatWeCherish stands as a platform that shows working mothers that entrepreneurship and family life can coexist harmoniously. With determination, resilience, andtherightsupport, motherscan build businesses that not only sustain their families but also create meaningful impact. Thejourneyisfilledwithbothchallengesand victories, but each step forward is a success worthcelebrating.
A powerful example of the impact of WhatWeCherish is seen in the story of Assucena, an artisan from Mozambique’s Linga Linga region. For years, she struggled to make ends meet, crafting baskets with little financial return. The opportunity to partner with Dathonga Designs, a Mozambican brand committed to fair trade and artisan empowerment, transformed her life.
Through this partnership, her work gained recognition, her earnings improved, and she was able to provide for her family and invest
in her child’s education. Initially sold only in Mozambique, these handcrafted products have now reached international markets, creating a ripple effect of economic empowerment. Supporting women like Assucena is at the heart of WhatWeCherish, nurturing sustainable change through entrepreneurship.
There are many ways individuals and organisationscansupportAfricancreatorsin their sustainability efforts. Providing education and business training empowers them with the tools to expand their reach. Partnerships with platforms like WhatWeCherish can amplify these efforts, offeringaspacewhereAfricanartistrycanbe celebrated on a global stage. Marketing support and investment in sustainable initiatives also play a crucial role in ensuring thelongevityoftheseindustries.
By taking these steps, both individuals and businesses can contribute to a more sustainable and equitable future for African creators. Green Beginnings: How Recycling is Inspiring Change on Campus
ByGoodWorkFoundation
Environmental education is receiving a refreshing boost in rural Mpumalanga and the Free State, thanks to a new partnership between the Good Work Foundation (GWF) and Fibre Circle. This collaboration is turning the idea of recycling into a daily habit for staff, learners, teachers and principals across GWF’s school network, and it’s already sparking a change in how communities view waste.
In February, representatives from Fibre Circle visited GWF’s Hazyview Digital Learning Campus to launch a project designed to encourage sustainable waste disposal. Fibre Circle has donated 36 waste bins along with other essential materials to kick-start the separation of waste—plastic, paper, tin and glass—across six GWF campuses. The recyclable materials will be collected and processed, with the resulting rebates used to reward GWF’s hardworking cleaning and gardening staff, the project’s dedicated “champions.”
Musa Mokoena, GWF’s head of campus operations, explains that many of the foundation’s campuses lie close to the Kruger National Park. “It’s critical to instil an appreciation for nature conservation and to encourage sustainable habits in the communities around us,” she says. “We discovered that consistent environmental education is scarce in these areas, so we were looking for a project that would not only leave a positive footprint on the environment but also teach everyone— staff and students alike—how to dispose of waste correctly.”
The initiative has quickly captured the imagination of the local schoolswithinGWF’snetwork,whichspans29governmentprimary schools as well as associated high schools. Mokoena notes that the localschoolsarethrilledwiththeprojectandarealreadyplanningto use the recycling rebates to fund school beautification and learner nutrition projects. “They aren’t just doing the right thing by filling the bins with recyclable waste; they are also discovering opportunities for entrepreneurship and revenue generation within the green economy,” she adds.
For Ally Hlatshwayo, who has tended the garden at GWF’s Huntington Digital Learning Campus since 2017, the recycling project is a welcome opportunity for growth. “I’m excited about this project because it creates jobs and helps us keep our campus, schools and community clean and healthy,” she remarks. “I’m learning new things, as I hadn’t realised that we could recycle our paper, glass and plastic. We’re no longer going to dump or burn waste—we’re going to recycle it.”
Fibre Circle, a producer responsibility organisation for the paper and packaging industry, is committed to keeping renewable and recyclable paper products out of South Africa’s landfills. Charmaine Maphosa, Fibre Circle’s community relations and education officer, describes the partnership with GWF as a “strategic and passiondriven alliance.” She explains that GWF’s extensive reach within primary schools and its commitment to recycling perfectly complement Fibre Circle’s focus on environmental sustainability. “By providing recycling bins and promoting awareness among learners, employees and students, we are creating a chain reaction that will hopefully lead to even greater outcomes,” she says. “Our collaboration is nurturing future environmental ambassadors, diverting recyclable waste from landfills, and demonstrating our commitment to a sustainable future.”
The project is about more than just waste management—it is a lesson in sustainability that empowers communities with the knowledge of recycling’s crucial role in environmental conservation.
As Maphosa emphasises, “Sustainability is a lifestyle choice that benefits future generations. We have a responsibility to improve the environment for those who come after us.”
This initiative is a reminder that small changes, when embraced collectively, can have a significant impact. For working moms, educators and community leaders alike, it offers a tangible way to contribute to a healthier, greener future for our children and the world they will inherit.
Growing Hope: How Earthchild Project’s School Gardens
are Transforming Education in Khayelitsha
ByJannaKretzmar,Director:EarthchildProject
In the heart of Khayelitsha, something remarkable is taking root. The Earthchild Project (ECP), a Cape Town-basednon-profitorganisation,isturningschool spacesintothrivinggardensthatnourishbothbodiesand minds. As the 2025 school year gets underway, two flourishing school gardens—launched in 2024—are already making a significant impact. These green havens are not only supplementing daily school meals but also providing hands-on learning opportunities for young children.
Now, thanks to the generous support of Nevermined Diamonds, a long-time supporter and donor of ECP, the initiative is expanding. Yomelela Primary School will soon join the movement, becoming the third school in Khayelitsha to benefit from this transformative programme.
Tackling Food Insecurity, One Garden at a Time Food security remains one of South Africa’s most pressing challenges, with many children depending on school feeding schemes for their primary meals. ECP’s school gardens address this issue head-on by supplying fresh, nutrient-rich produce to support daily meal programmes. Over the past few months, the gardens at Sakumlandela and Ntwasahlobo Primary Schools have yielded impressive results:
Over 160 kilograms of fresh vegetables harvested in a single month.
1,000 meals enriched daily through school feeding programmes.
A diverse selection of crops, including
spinach, carrots, tomatoes, and herbs.
These figures highlight the tangible impact of ECP’s efforts, ensuring that children receive the nourishment they need to focus, grow, and excel academically.
More Than Just a Garden
Beyond providing essential nutrition, these gardens have become spaces of learning, healing, and empowerment. Teachersandlearnersalikehaveembraced them, finding moments of peace and connection with nature during their busy school days.
"Our learners get to have a space of peace. I am one of the users of the garden—when I feel overwhelmed during the day, I can take five minutes to breathe and reconnect. Besides being a nutritious place, it’s a space of wholesomeness, peace, and the love of nature." – Nasiphi Matoni, Teacher, Ntwasahlobo Primary School
The upcoming Yomelela Primary School Garden represents an important step forward in ECP’s commitment to
where children gain hands-on experience in organic farming, composting, and water conservation. These practical skills will not only benefit them today but will serve them for years to come.
Cultivating a Greener Future
The impact of these gardens extends far beyond the school gates. By promoting biodiversity, reducing the carbon footprint of food supply chains, and instilling environmental responsibility in young learners, the project is sowing the seeds of a more sustainable future.
In March 2025, the Yomelela garden will officially take root, compelling proof of community-driven solutions. ECP invites the public to follow the journey as they document the progress of these growing school gardens, sharing stories of impact and opportunities for support.

Absolutely! Believe it or not, your gut and reproductive health are more connected than you might think. A healthy gut supports hormone balance by regulating estrogen, reducing inflammation, and improving nutrient absorption—key ingredients for fertility success!
On the other hand, if your gut isn’t happy, it can create chronic stress on your body, mess with ovulation, and even contribute to conditions like PCOS. If you're trying to conceive, supporting your gut with fiber-rich foods, probiotics, and managing stress can help boost your gut— and your fertility!
Where does health begin?
Great question! Health really starts with those everyday choices—what you eat, how you move, how you rest, and even what you think about. But if we’re getting technical, it actually begins in your gut!
Your gut plays a huge role in digestion, immunity, mental health, and hormone balance, laying the groundwork for your overall well-being. So, if you’re feeling a bit “off,” it might be time to show your gut some love. It could be the missing piece to feel your best!
Which hormones cause acne?
Acne can feel like the bane of our collective existence! A mix of hormones often drives acne, but androgens (like testosterone) are the biggest culprits. They increase oil production, which clogs pores and creates the perfect breeding ground for breakouts.
Fluctuations in estrogen and progesterone—especially around your period—can also play a role, while high cortisol (your stress hormone) can make things worse. The good news? Managing stress, balancing your blood sugar, and supporting gut health can work wonders for keeping hormonal acne in check.
